basic level
AS-Level requires the classification of skills, transfer, the basic theories and stages of learning, and the main types of practice, guidance and feedback.
higher level
The full A-Level demands the detailed application and evaluation of the learning theories, the working-memory model and the justified selection of practice, guidance and feedback for a named skill and stage of learning.

Types of transfer of learning
Classify a basketball free throw on the environmental, pacing and continuity continua, and explain how this classification guides how it should be practised.
The basket does not move and there is no defender, so the environment is stable and predictable - a closed skill.
The player chooses when to shoot, so it is self-paced.
It is a single, clearly defined action with a clear start and end - a discrete skill.
A closed, self-paced, discrete skill is well suited to massed, fixed practice that grooves a consistent, repeatable technique.
Result: The free throw is closed, self-paced and discrete, so massed fixed practice to groove a consistent technique is appropriate.

Bandura's observational (social) learning model
A coach wants a beginner to stop flinching when catching a hard cricket ball, and separately wants an experienced player to read the game better. Suggest and justify a learning theory for each.
The aim is to shape a specific response and remove a fear reaction, so operant conditioning suits: reinforce successful catches with praise so the correct response is repeated, and use softer balls first to shape success.
This is an open, tactical skill requiring understanding of the whole situation, so cognitive (insight) learning suits: present game scenarios so the player perceives relationships and gains insight.
Operant conditioning is efficient for grooving a closed response; cognitive learning develops the understanding that tactical, open play demands.
Result: Operant conditioning to shape the catch; cognitive (insight) learning to develop tactical reading - each theory matched to the type of skill.

Presentation and type of practice
A teacher is introducing front crawl to complete beginners. Recommend and justify a presentation and type of practice.
Front crawl is a continuous but low-organisation skill (the arm and leg actions and breathing can be separated), and the learners are beginners in the cognitive stage.
Use part (or progressive-part) practice: learn the leg kick, then the arm action, then breathing, then chain them together, so beginners are not overwhelmed and the water is safer.
Use distributed practice with rest between attempts, allowing recovery, feedback and reduced fatigue in a demanding environment.
Result: Progressive-part practice to chain the sub-routines, with distributed practice to allow rest and feedback - both justified by the low organisation and the beginners' stage.

The four types of guidance
Explain how the guidance a coach uses for a javelin thrower should change as the athlete progresses from the cognitive to the autonomous stage.
Use mainly visual guidance (clear demonstrations, video) to build a mental picture, supported by simple verbal cues; manual guidance may set the throwing position and give kinaesthetic feel.
Reduce visual support and increase detailed verbal guidance to refine technique, encouraging the athlete to use their own intrinsic feedback.
Guidance is mainly precise verbal cues about fine technical and tactical points; the athlete relies largely on intrinsic (kinaesthetic) feedback and needs little external support.
Result: Guidance shifts from visual/manual in the cognitive stage to detailed verbal guidance and intrinsic feedback by the autonomous stage.

Types of feedback
A netball coach is developing a shooter from beginner to county level. Explain how the feedback should change across the stages of learning.
Use mainly extrinsic, positive feedback focused on knowledge of results ('that one was in') so the beginner knows what worked and stays motivated; keep it simple and immediate.
Add more knowledge of performance about technique, and begin to encourage the shooter to notice their own intrinsic (kinaesthetic) feedback.
Feedback is mainly intrinsic, with occasional precise extrinsic knowledge of performance and constructive negative feedback about fine detail, which the confident performer can act on.
Result: Feedback moves from extrinsic, positive, results-based feedback for the beginner to mainly intrinsic knowledge of performance for the autonomous shooter.

The multi-store model of memory
Explain how the working-memory model accounts for a midfielder simultaneously listening to a shouted instruction and tracking the movement of players.
The central executive directs attention and allocates the two tasks to the appropriate sub-systems.
The shouted instruction is verbal/auditory information, handled by the phonological loop.
The positions and movement of players are visual/spatial information, handled by the visuo-spatial sketchpad.
Because the verbal and visual sub-systems are separate, the two tasks do not compete for one store, so the player can do both at once - something the multi-store model cannot explain.
Result: The separate phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad, coordinated by the central executive, let the midfielder process spoken and visual information at the same time.
