This chapter studies the psychological factors that influence the individual performer. It covers the theories of personality and attitudes, the effect of arousal and anxiety on performance, the explanations of aggression, and the roles of motivation and of the presence of others (social facilitation). Throughout, each named theory is described, applied to sporting behaviour and evaluated for its usefulness in optimising performance.

Key points

Personality is the sum of the characteristics that make a person unique and give some consistency to their behaviour, and three approaches try to explain it. The trait approach argues that personality is made up of stable, enduring, largely innate traits that we are born with, so behaviour is consistent across situations and, in principle, predictable - a person is simply extroverted, or anxious, wherever they are. Eysenck placed traits on two dimensions (extroversion-introversion and stable-neurotic), and personalities are sometimes divided into Type A (competitive, impatient, high-stress) and Type B (relaxed, tolerant, lower-stress).
The social-learning approach takes the opposite view: personality and behaviour are learned from the environment by observing and imitating significant others (role models) and by having behaviour reinforced (Bandura). On this account behaviour is not fixed but is shaped by our experiences and copied from others, so a young player may become aggressive because they have watched and been rewarded for aggression. This explains why behaviour can differ from one setting to another and why it can change.
The interactionist approach combines the two and is the most widely accepted. It argues that behaviour is a product of both the person's traits and the environment or situation, captured by Lewin's formula B=f(P,E)B = f(P, E)B=f(P,E) - behaviour is a function of the personality and the environment. Hollander's model pictures personality as three layers: a stable psychological core (the 'real you' - values and beliefs), the typical responses we usually make, and the role-related behaviour that changes most with the situation. The interactionist view holds that a normally calm player (trait) may still behave aggressively in a heated derby (environment).
Each approach is evaluated by how well it predicts behaviour. The trait approach is simple and intuitive but is criticised because it cannot explain why the same person behaves differently in different situations, and personality has been found to be a poor predictor of sporting performance on its own. The social-learning approach captures the influence of environment and role models but underplays innate tendencies. The interactionist approach is preferred because it accounts for both consistency and change, and it has practical value: a coach who knows a player's typical traits and the situations that trigger unwanted behaviour can intervene - which is exactly the applied reasoning the examination rewards.

Worked example

Applying the three approaches

A young footballer frequently dissents at referees. Explain how the trait, social-learning and interactionist approaches would each account for this behaviour.

Key points

An attitude is a learned, evaluative predisposition towards something (a person, object or situation) - an athlete's attitude to training, to a rival or to fair play. Attitudes are directed at an 'attitude object' and, because they are learned, they can be changed. The most common way of describing an attitude is the triadic model, which breaks it into three components, conveniently remembered as the ABC.
The three components are the cognitive, the affective and the behavioural. The cognitive component is what a person believes or knows about the attitude object ('training improves my fitness'); the affective component is how they feel about it emotionally ('I enjoy training'); and the behavioural component is how they actually behave towards it ('I attend every session'). The three are usually consistent, but not always - a player may believe training is beneficial yet still dislike and avoid it - which is important when trying to change an attitude.
Attitudes are formed through experience and social learning: they develop from our own past experiences (enjoyable or unpleasant), from the influence of significant others (family, coaches, peers) whom we imitate, from being reinforced for certain behaviours, and from the prevailing culture and media. A negative attitude to an activity often comes from repeated failure, boredom or a poor early experience, which tells a coach how such attitudes might be prevented or reversed.
Two methods are used to change a negative attitude. Cognitive dissonance is created by introducing new information that conflicts with one of the components, producing an uncomfortable mismatch the performer is motivated to resolve, usually by changing the attitude (making training enjoyable and varied to challenge the belief that it is boring, or highlighting the fitness gains). Persuasive communication changes an attitude through a convincing message, and works best when the persuader has high status and credibility, the message is clear and relevant, and the timing is right. The applied skill is to identify which component is negative and to choose and justify a strategy - creating dissonance or persuading - to change it, which is a standard exam task.
Worked example

Changing an attitude through dissonance

A gymnast believes conditioning work is pointless and boring and skips it. Explain how a coach could use cognitive dissonance to change this attitude.

  1. 01Identify the components

    Cognitive: 'conditioning is pointless'; affective: 'it is boring'; behavioural: 'I skip it' - all three are negative and consistent.

  2. 02Introduce conflicting information

    The coach challenges the cognitive component by showing evidence that conditioning improves the gymnast's specific skills, and challenges the affective component by making the sessions varied, social and enjoyable.

    The new positive experiences and information conflict with the existing negative attitude, creating an uncomfortable mismatch (dissonance).

    To remove the discomfort, the gymnast adjusts their attitude towards a more positive one and begins to attend.

Result: By introducing evidence and enjoyable sessions that conflict with the negative beliefs and feelings, the coach creates dissonance the gymnast resolves by adopting a more positive attitude.

Key points

Arousal is the level of physiological and psychological activation or readiness that varies on a continuum from deep sleep to intense excitement. Its effect on performance is one of the central questions of sport psychology, and three theories describe the relationship. Drive theory proposes a simple, linear relationship: as arousal increases, so does performance (P=f(D×H)P = f(D \times H)P=f(D×H), performance is a function of drive and habit). The theory adds that higher arousal makes the dominant (most likely) response more probable, so for an expert - whose dominant response is the correct, well-learned skill - high arousal helps, whereas for a beginner - whose dominant response is often an error - high arousal harms performance.
The inverted-U hypothesis (Yerkes-Dodson) is more widely accepted. It proposes that performance improves as arousal rises up to an optimal point, after which further arousal causes performance to decline, so the graph of performance against arousal is an inverted U. Performance is best at a moderate, optimal level of arousal; too little (under-aroused) and the performer lacks activation, too much (over-aroused) and performance falls away. The optimal point is not fixed: it is higher for gross, simple, well-learned skills (a rugby tackle) and for experts, and lower for fine, complex skills (a golf putt) and for beginners.
Catastrophe theory refines the inverted-U for the case of high anxiety. It agrees that increasing arousal improves performance up to an optimal point, but argues that if the performer also has high cognitive (mental) anxiety, then going beyond the optimal point does not cause a gentle decline but a sudden, dramatic 'catastrophic' drop in performance. Recovery is then difficult - the performer must lower their arousal substantially before performance returns - which captures the real experience of an athlete who 'chokes' under pressure far better than the smooth inverted-U.
The three theories are evaluated by how well they fit reality. Drive theory is criticised as too simple - performance does not keep rising indefinitely with arousal - though its idea of the dominant response is useful. The inverted-U is well supported and practically useful (it tells a coach to bring a performer to a moderate, skill-appropriate arousal), but it assumes a smooth, symmetrical curve and a single optimal point. Catastrophe theory is more realistic because it includes the interaction with cognitive anxiety and explains sudden collapses, but it is more complex to apply. A strong answer selects the theory that best fits the situation and uses it to advise on managing a performer's arousal.

Worked example

Matching arousal to the skill

A coach must prepare a powerlifter for a maximal deadlift and a snooker player for a frame-deciding shot. Use the inverted-U hypothesis to advise on the arousal each needs.

    The deadlift is a gross, simple, well-learned power skill; the snooker shot is a fine, complex skill requiring precise control.

    Gross power skills have a high optimal arousal, so the coach should 'psych up' the lifter to a high level of arousal to maximise force.

    Fine, precise skills have a low optimal arousal, so the coach should keep the snooker player calm and controlled - high arousal would cause tremor and error.

    The optimal arousal is higher for gross/simple skills and experts, and lower for fine/complex skills and beginners.

Result: The powerlifter needs high arousal (a gross power skill), the snooker player low arousal (a fine, precise skill) - the optimal level depends on the skill type.

Key points

Anxiety is a negative emotional state of worry, apprehension and tension that often accompanies high arousal, and distinguishing its forms is essential. Trait anxiety (A-trait) is an enduring part of the personality - a general, innate disposition to perceive situations as threatening and to respond with anxiety - so a high-trait-anxious performer tends to feel anxious across many situations. State anxiety (A-state) is the temporary, ever-changing anxiety felt in a particular situation, such as the moment before a penalty. A performer high in trait anxiety is more likely to experience high state anxiety in a given competitive situation.
Anxiety also has two dimensions according to how it is experienced. Somatic anxiety is the physiological response - the raised heart rate, sweating, butterflies, muscular tension and need to urinate that the body produces. Cognitive anxiety is the psychological response - the negative thoughts, worry, apprehension and loss of concentration and confidence in the mind. The two often occur together but are separate, and, importantly, they can respond to different management techniques (somatic techniques calm the body, cognitive techniques calm the mind), which links directly to the stress-management topic.
Because anxiety is partly internal, it must be measured, and three approaches are used, each with strengths and weaknesses. Questionnaires (self-report inventories such as the Sport Competition Anxiety Test, SCAT) ask the performer to rate their feelings; they are cheap and can be given to many people, but rely on honest, accurate self-report and performers may answer as they think they should. Physiological measures record bodily signs of arousal and somatic anxiety (heart rate, sweating, hormone levels); they give objective data but the equipment can itself be intrusive and raise anxiety.
The third method is observation, in which a trained observer watches the performer for behavioural signs of anxiety (fidgeting, changes in technique, body language) in the real setting; it is ecologically valid (it captures behaviour as it really happens) but is subjective, requires skilled observers and time, and the observer must know the performer's normal behaviour. The evaluative point is that no single method is perfect, so using more than one (for example a questionnaire plus observation) gives a fuller, more reliable picture. Recognising the type and dimension of a performer's anxiety, and choosing an appropriate way to measure it, prepares for selecting the right management technique.
Worked example

Diagnosing a performer's anxiety

Before a cup final a normally relaxed footballer reports a racing heart and sweating palms but no negative thoughts about the game. Classify this anxiety and suggest how it should be measured and managed.

  1. 01Type

    The player is 'normally relaxed', so this is state anxiety (temporary, situational) rather than trait anxiety.

  2. 02Dimension

    The symptoms are a racing heart and sweating (bodily) with no negative thoughts, so it is somatic rather than cognitive anxiety.

  3. 03Measurement

    A physiological measure (heart rate) would capture the somatic response objectively; a questionnaire could confirm the low cognitive component.

  4. 04Management

    Because it is somatic, a somatic technique such as breathing control or progressive muscular relaxation is appropriate.

Result: This is somatic state anxiety; it can be measured physiologically and managed with a somatic relaxation technique such as breathing control.

Key points

In sport psychology aggression is the intention to harm another person outside the rules of the game, and it must be separated from assertion, which is forceful, goal-directed behaviour within the rules and without the intent to harm (a hard but fair tackle). Only behaviour intended to injure, and against the rules, is aggression - a distinction that is central to answering questions on this topic. Four theories explain why aggression occurs.
The instinct theory argues that aggression is an innate, biological drive that builds up and must be released, often through sport (a cathartic 'letting off steam'). It is largely rejected because it cannot explain why aggression varies so much between people and cultures and is not always present. The frustration-aggression hypothesis (Dollard) argues that aggression is always caused by frustration: when a performer is blocked from achieving a goal (a poor refereeing decision, being fouled, losing) they become frustrated, and this frustration leads to aggression - though later versions note that frustration produces aggression only if aggressive cues are present.
The aggressive-cue hypothesis (Berkowitz) refines this: frustration creates only a readiness for aggression (increased arousal and anger), and actual aggression follows only if learned aggressive cues are present in the environment - objects, people or situations associated with aggression (an aggressive opponent, a hostile crowd, certain equipment). Without such cues, the frustrated performer may not become aggressive. The social-learning theory (Bandura) argues that aggression is learned by observing and imitating others, especially high-status role models, and by being reinforced for it - so a young player becomes aggressive because they have seen aggression rewarded and copied it.
The theories are evaluated by their evidence and usefulness, and the social-learning and aggressive-cue theories are the most widely accepted because they best explain how aggression is triggered and can be reduced. This matters practically because the theories point to strategies for controlling aggression: because aggression is largely learned and cue-triggered, a coach can reinforce non-aggressive, assertive behaviour, remove the performer from aggressive cues, use stress-management and cognitive techniques to control the frustration and arousal, set process goals rather than win-at-all-costs outcomes, and provide positive role models. Selecting a theory to explain an incident and using it to justify strategies to control aggression is the key applied task.
Worked example

Explaining and controlling an aggressive act

A basketball player, repeatedly blocked and fouled by an opponent, elbows them off the ball. Explain the incident using two theories and suggest strategies to prevent a recurrence.

Result: Frustration from being blocked, combined with aggressive cues and learned behaviour, produced the aggression; reinforcing assertion, stress-management, process goals and removal from cues would help prevent it.

Key points

Motivation is the drive to initiate and persist at a task - the internal and external forces that make a performer start, work hard and keep going. Intrinsic motivation comes from within: the enjoyment, satisfaction, pride and sense of achievement of taking part and improving for its own sake. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside: rewards such as trophies, medals, money, praise and recognition (tangible rewards) or the avoidance of punishment. Both can drive performance, and a good coach uses a blend of the two.
The relationship between the two types of motivation matters. Intrinsic motivation is generally regarded as the more powerful and durable because it does not depend on an external supply of rewards, so it sustains effort over the long term. Extrinsic rewards are useful, especially for beginners, to encourage and reinforce effort, but they carry a risk: if used too heavily they can undermine intrinsic motivation, so that a performer who once played for love comes to play only for the reward and loses interest when it is withdrawn. Extrinsic rewards should therefore be used carefully to support, not replace, intrinsic motivation.
The presence of other people also affects performance, an effect known as social facilitation and inhibition. Zajonc explained it through arousal: the presence of others (an audience or co-actors) raises the performer's arousal, and this increased arousal makes the dominant response more likely. For an expert, whose dominant response is the correct, well-learned skill, the audience improves performance (social facilitation); for a beginner, whose dominant response is often an error, the audience makes performance worse (social inhibition).
This is refined by the idea of evaluation apprehension: it is not merely the presence of others but the perception that they are judging or evaluating the performer that raises arousal, so a knowledgeable or critical audience has a stronger effect. The practical implications are clear and examinable: beginners should learn and be assessed away from evaluative audiences until their skills are well grooved (their dominant response is correct), while experts can be exposed to crowds to raise arousal towards their optimum. Managing motivation and the effect of an audience - and evaluating the risks, such as reward undermining intrinsic drive or an audience causing inhibition - is the applied focus here.
Worked example

Managing an audience effect

A coach is developing a nervous young gymnast and also managing an experienced champion. Using social facilitation theory, advise how each should train and compete with respect to audiences.

  1. 01Explain the mechanism

    An audience raises arousal and makes the dominant response more likely, and evaluation apprehension strengthens this effect.

  2. 02The young gymnast

    As a beginner the dominant response is often an error, so an evaluative audience causes inhibition; the coach should let them learn and be assessed in private until skills are well learned, then gradually introduce small audiences.

  3. 03The champion

    As an expert the dominant response is the correct skill, so an audience facilitates performance; the champion can train and compete before crowds, using the raised arousal to reach their optimum.

  4. 04General rule

    Grove skills before exposing beginners to evaluation; expose experts to audiences to raise arousal.

Result: Protect the beginner from evaluative audiences until their skills are grooved (to avoid inhibition), but expose the expert to crowds to facilitate performance.
