Physical Education

A-Level Physical Education is a genuinely hybrid subject that studies the human performer from every angle, set against the Department for Education GCE AS and A level subject content and delivered here through the AQA 7582 specification. It spans the quantitative sciences - applied anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology and biomechanics - alongside skill acquisition, sport psychology and the social, ethical and contemporary study of sport, and it is assessed as much on the application of theory to real sporting performance and on extended analysis and evaluation as on recall, together with a substantial practical (non-exam) assessment.

Paper 1 - Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport (AQA 7582/1)
2 hours, 105 marks, 35% of the A-Level. A written paper in three sections: Section A applied anatomy and physiology, Section B skill acquisition, and Section C sport and society. A mix of multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-writing questions, including a 15-mark extended-response question that rewards analysis and evaluation. Linear assessment taken at the end of the course.
Paper 2 - Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport (AQA 7582/2)
2 hours, 105 marks, 35% of the A-Level. A written paper in three sections: Section A exercise physiology and biomechanics, Section B sport psychology, and Section C sport and society and the role of technology in sport. A mix of multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-writing questions, including a 15-mark extended-response question. Some marks assess quantitative skills (calculating cardiac output, training zones, moments, mechanical advantage and momentum).
Non-exam assessment - Practical performance in physical activity and sport (AQA 7582/C)
90 marks, 30% of the A-Level, internally marked and externally moderated. The student is assessed as either a player/performer or a coach in one activity from the approved list (45 marks), and completes a written or verbal analysis and evaluation of performance (AEP) for improvement (45 marks) in which theory from across the specification is applied to a chosen weakness.
Assessment objectives and grading
Across the two written papers the assessment objectives are balanced between AO1 (demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors affecting performance and participation), AO2 (apply that knowledge to physical activity and sport) and AO3 (analyse and evaluate to optimise performance and inform judgements); the extended-response questions target AO2 and AO3. AO4 (demonstrate and apply skill in physical activity and sport while analysing and evaluating performance) is assessed through the practical NEA. The full A-Level is linear and graded A*-E, with U below E.
