Polskie życie kulturalne: cinema, art and music

This topic carries sub-theme 3.2.1.2 of AQA 7687, Polish cultural life, across all three of its bullets — cinema, art and music — inside theme 3.2.1, Artistic culture in the Polish-speaking world past and present. The theme is examined wherever the specification says content is drawn from the themes and sub-themes: the four stimulus texts and the translation into English in Paper 1, and the listening passages, the translation into Polish and the multi-skill task in Paper 3. It is not directly assessed in Paper 2, whose essays are on the prescribed works, although both listed films belong to exactly this material and the vocabulary transfers wholesale. There is no speaking assessment anywhere in this qualification, so every one of those tasks is written. The notes take the three bullets in turn — Polish cinema as a subject with named periods rather than a list of titles, art and the language of looking, and music from Chopin through the post-war avant-garde to disco polo and hip-hop — then turn to the register, syntax and evaluative vocabulary of cultural writing in Polish, and close on the assessment objective this theme is best placed to train. That last section reads section 3.3 of the specification as the examiner's own definition of the range an AO3 mark rewards, and shows why writing about culture is the natural home of the impersonal -no and -to forms, the adjectival passive participle and the conditional. A single tree figure maps the sub-theme so that its three branches, and the two named strands each branch needs, are visible at a glance. Every Polish structure is glossed, and every film, painting and piece of music named is described only to the level of documented fact.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is that a student can describe Polish cultural life accurately: name a period, a director, a painter and a composer, say when and where each worked, and write clearly about one film, one painting and one piece of music in correct Polish. The core vocabulary of the three fields — reżyser, zdjęcia, obraz, wystawa, utwór, kompozytor — should be secure enough to use without hesitation. Recognising the two period labels, polska szkoła filmowa and kino moralnego niepokoju, and being able to place a work inside one of them, is the point at which description begins to turn into analysis.

higher level

The full A-level expects the descriptive layer to be assumed rather than displayed. A strong answer states a claim about Polish cultural life, defends it with named evidence, acknowledges the counter-case and reaches a conclusion that follows from what was actually argued. It handles contested figures and contested judgements as contested, naming a debate rather than quietly settling it, and it takes popular culture as seriously as the concert hall, because the specification's bullets say music and art, not classical music and fine art. Linguistically it earns the AO3 range mark by deploying the impersonal forms, the participles and the conditional at the points where the meaning calls for them, which in cultural writing is often.

Fig. 1The sub-theme is three branches, and a usable answer knows two named strands inside each one - the difference between a paragraph that can go somewhere and a list of titles. Cinema is emphasised because it is the branch this section develops and the one in which the specification's own prescribed films sit; its two strands are the Polish Film School of the later 1950s and the cinema made since 1989.

Key points

This section serves the first bullet of sub-theme 3.2.1.2, Polish cultural life: cinema. The specification prints a single word, and the single word is deliberately generous — it licenses anything from the state film school in Łódź to a release from last year, provided the student can say something about it that is more than a plot summary. What makes cinema the most writable of the three bullets is that Polish film history has visible periods with names, and a named period is an instant structure for a paragraph. Two of those names do most of the work: polska szkoła filmowa, the Polish Film School of the later 1950s, and kino moralnego niepokoju, the cinema of moral anxiety of the later 1970s. Learn to use both terms in Polish and half the organising work of an answer is done before you have written a sentence.
The polska szkoła filmowa grew up around the film school founded in Łódź in 1948, the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Filmowa, Telewizyjna i Teatralna, known to everyone as szkoła filmowa w Łodzi. Andrzej Wajda is its central figure, and his Popiół i diament of 1958 was made from the Jerzy Andrzejewski novel that appears on this specification's own list of prescribed texts — a connection worth noticing, because it lets one piece of preparation serve two different papers. Kino moralnego niepokoju arrived two decades later and was a different thing altogether: films about compromise, careerism and quiet complicity in the Poland of the later 1970s, made by Krzysztof Zanussi, Agnieszka Holland, Feliks Falk and the young Krzysztof Kieślowski. The label is Polish and does not survive translation into a phrase; use it in Polish and gloss it once.
Contemporary cinema gives an answer its present tense. Paweł Pawlikowski's Ida won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the first Polish film to do so, and his Zimna wojna brought him the directing prize at Cannes; Jan Komasa's Boże Ciało was nominated in the same Academy category, by then renamed Best International Feature Film, a few years later. At home the fixed point of the calendar is the Festiwal Polskich Filmów Fabularnych, held in Gdynia, whose main prize is the Złote Lwy. Note too that the specification's own film list — Wajda's Katyń of 2007 and Kieślowski's Przypadek, which it dates 1981 — is drawn from precisely this material, so a student studying a set film already owns half the vocabulary the theme needs. Prescribed lists belong to the board and can be revised, so confirm the list current for your own series.
Two habits separate an answer that scores from one that merely reports. The first is refusing plot narration: the AO4 grid rewards a critical and analytical response, so a sentence saying what happens is worth less than one saying what a film belongs to and what it does. Film należy do nurtu kina moralnego niepokoju, the film belongs to the current of the cinema of moral anxiety, is worth more than three sentences of story. The second habit is honesty about contested figures. Roman Polański and Jerzy Skolimowski both trained in Łódź and both went on to work abroad, but Polański's career is the subject of serious and continuing controversy, and an answer that names him without acknowledging that reads as uninformed. Naming a debate as a debate is not a hedge; on this specification it is a large part of what critical response means.
Worked example

A Paper 1 reading question on a text about Polish cinema

The question, worth two marks with no AO3 marks attached, is: Dlaczego, według tekstu, sukces filmu „Ida” nie był przypadkowy?

  1. 01Read the interrogative before reading the text again

The question word is dlaczego, so the answer must be a cause and must be expressed as one. Według tekstu tells you the cause has to come from the passage rather than from your own knowledge of Polish cinema, which is a real temptation on a theme you have revised. Nie był przypadkowy, was not accidental, is a negative formulation, so you are looking for the sentence in which the writer explains what made the success possible. Marking the interrogative and the scope of the question before rereading takes ten seconds and prevents the commonest failure on a two-mark item, which is writing everything you know about Ida.

  2. 02Locate the answer and notice that it has two parts

The final sentence carries it, and it is deliberately compound: nie wziął się znikąd is glossed by a colon and then by two clauses joined with a. The first clause is the film school in Łódź, which has trained directors and cinematographers for decades; the second is the national festival in Gdynia, which has shown Polish films for years. Two marks, two parts. A candidate who gives only the school has answered half the question and will score half the marks, and the a joining the clauses is the visible signal that a second element is coming.

  3. 03Decide what may be lifted and what may not

This item carries no AO3 marks, so the specification permits you to use words and phrases from the text without rephrasing them, and tolerates minor spelling errors that do not distort meaning. What it does not permit is lifting an element that does not match the phrasing of the question, or including irrelevant material — copying the whole final sentence, including the clause about foreign audiences never seeing these films, risks exactly that. The safe procedure is to lift the two nouns you need, szkoła filmowa and festiwal, and supply your own verb and your own connective.

  4. 04Write the answer as a Polish clause and control the cases

Begin with the question's own frame so the answer is visibly an answer: Sukces „Idy” nie był przypadkowy, ponieważ... After ponieważ comes the cause. Watch three endings. Kształcić takes the accusative, and reżyser and operator are masculine personal, so the plural accusative is reżyserów i operatorów. W łódzkiej szkole filmowej is locative throughout. If you choose to reformulate with a relative clause, remember that a negated verb governs the genitive: filmy, których publiczność nie ogląda, not filmy, które publiczność nie ogląda.

  5. 05Reformulate anyway, because it costs nothing and can only help

Even where lifting is permitted, an answer in your own Polish is safer: it cannot be accused of copying inappropriately, it proves comprehension rather than transcription, and it builds the habit the summary question will require, where lifted language is explicitly ineligible for the AO3 mark. Three moves are enough here. Replace od dziesięcioleci with od wielu lat. Replace the relative clause about foreign audiences with the adjective nieznane plus the dative, nieznane zagranicznej publiczności. Turn pokazuje into the passive pokazywane są, which shifts the emphasis onto the films themselves.

Result: Sukces „Idy” nie był przypadkowy, ponieważ polskie kino od wielu lat kształci reżyserów i operatorów w łódzkiej szkole filmowej oraz ma własny festiwal w Gdyni, na którym co roku pokazywane są filmy nieznane zagranicznej publiczności. Dwa punkty, dwie przyczyny: szkoła i festiwal. Odpowiedź jest przeformułowana, choć w tym pytaniu przepisanie z tekstu byłoby dozwolone.

Exam focus

  • Learn the two period labels in Polish, polska szkoła filmowa and kino moralnego niepokoju, and use them as the organising spine of any answer about cinema (AO4).
  • Read film reviews in Polish rather than reading about Polish film in English; Paper 1's stimulus texts are adapted from authentic Polish sources, including online ones (AO2).
  • Practise the vocabulary of making rather than of watching — nakręcić, reżyseria, zdjęcia, montaż, obsada — because it is what lets you write analytically instead of narratively (AO3).
  • Treat contested figures and contested judgements as contested; attributing an argument is itself an analytical move (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Retelling the plot. A synopsis demonstrates neither critical nor analytical response, and the AO4 grid says so in as many words.
  • Calling the director dyrektor. A film director is reżyser; dyrektor is a manager or a head teacher.
  • Writing zdobył Oscar. The accusative is Oscara: film zdobył Oscara dla najlepszego filmu nieanglojęzycznego.
  • Using patrzeć for watching a film. Patrzeć na coś is to look at something; a film is oglądać in the imperfective and obejrzeć in the perfective.
  • Losing the diacritics in the place names. It is w Łodzi, with both the ł and the ó, and w Gdyni, with a soft final consonant in the locative.

Sztuka: art, and the language of looking#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7687 3.2.1.2 Sub-theme: Polish cultural life - artLPAQA 7687 4.4.3 Paper 1 translation from Polish into English - a passage of at least 100 words, content based on the themes and sub-themes

Key points

This section serves the second bullet of sub-theme 3.2.1.2: art. The word covers more ground than a British student expects, partly because sztuka in Polish means art in general and also a play in the theatre, and partly because the Polish canon is not organised around one national gallery but around several institutions with distinct characters. Writing about art demands a vocabulary most learners never acquire — not the names of artists, which are easy, but the language of looking: na pierwszym planie, in the foreground; w tle, in the background; kompozycja, barwa, światłocień, perspektywa. Without those words an answer can only say who painted what and when, which is exactly the descriptive floor the AO4 grid places at the bottom of its ladder. With them, a student can describe before judging, which is the order the grid rewards.
The obvious starting point is Jan Matejko, whose enormous history paintings were made in a country that did not then exist on the map. Bitwa pod Grunwaldem, finished in 1878, hangs in the Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw; Hołd pruski, finished in 1882, is in the Kraków branch of the same institution, in the gallery housed in the Sukiennice. Their scale is the point and should be stated as such: these are paintings that argue, made to give a partitioned nation a picture of itself. Stanisław Wyspiański, a generation later, worked as painter, playwright and designer at once — his stained glass in Kraków and his play Wesele belong to a single career — and he is the natural bridge from the nineteenth century into Młoda Polska, the movement whose name a Polish text will use without explaining it.
The twentieth century supplies the more interesting material and the less predictable answers. Władysław Strzemiński and Katarzyna Kobro built a constructivist avant-garde in Łódź between the wars, and the international collection they helped assemble became the Muzeum Sztuki there, among the oldest museums of modern art anywhere. Tamara Łempicka carried a Polish name into the art deco portraiture of interwar Paris. After the war Magdalena Abakanowicz made the monumental woven forms known as Abakany and later the crowds of headless figures that stand in public spaces; Zdzisław Beksiński painted the unsettling landscapes now largely gathered in Sanok; Wilhelm Sasnal is among the Polish painters most visible internationally today. The Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej in Warsaw, which moved into a purpose-built home on plac Defilad in 2024, is where the present tense of this bullet lives.
A practical note about institutions, because they generate the vocabulary that stimulus texts and translations actually use. Muzeum Narodowe exists in several cities and each holds different things; Muzeum Sztuki means the Łódź institution specifically; a galeria may be a commercial gallery or a wing of a museum; zbiory is the collection and wystawa czasowa the temporary exhibition. Kraków also holds Leonardo's Dama z gronostajem, part of the Czartoryski collection and now shown within the Muzeum Narodowe there — a useful fact precisely because it complicates the theme, since Polish cultural life includes what Poland has collected as well as what Poles have made. Note the grammar while you are here: muzeum does not decline in the singular, so it is w Muzeum Narodowym, with the adjective carrying the case entirely on its own.
Worked example

Paper 1 translation into English, worked phrase by phrase

Translate the following passage into English. „W Łodzi, mieście, które przez sto lat żyło z przemysłu włókienniczego, powstało jedno z najstarszych na świecie muzeów sztuki nowoczesnej. Kolekcję zgromadziła w latach trzydziestych grupa artystów awangardowych skupiona wokół Władysława Strzemińskiego i Katarzyny Kobro. Zbiory przekazano miastu, a wystawę udostępniono publiczności jeszcze przed wojną. Dziś Muzeum Sztuki działa w trzech budynkach i pokazuje zarówno prace przedwojennej awangardy, jak i sztukę współczesną. Dla wielu odwiedzających zaskoczeniem jest to, że tak radykalna kolekcja powstała nie w stolicy, lecz w mieście fabrycznym, którego mieszkańcy mieli wtedy do sztuki nowoczesnej stosunek co najmniej sceptyczny.”

  1. 01Read the whole passage before translating a word of it

Two features will decide the English and both are visible on a first reading. The first is that two verbs are impersonal, przekazano and udostępniono, and English has no equivalent form, so both will need the passive. The second is that the passage repeatedly puts the object before the verb — Kolekcję zgromadziła, Zbiory przekazano, wystawę udostępniono — for emphasis, and English word order cannot carry that emphasis the same way. Deciding in advance that these two things will need handling stops you from producing the literal, ungrammatical English that a phrase-by-phrase first pass always generates.

  2. 02Sentence one: the apposition and żyć z

W Łodzi, mieście, które przez sto lat żyło z przemysłu włókienniczego. Mieście is a locative in apposition to Łodzi, so the English is a city that, with a comma, not the city which. Żyć z plus the genitive means to live off or live by, not to live with, and przemysł włókienniczy is the textile industry — a collocation worth learning whole, because włókienniczy will not be guessable. Powstało jedno z najstarszych... muzeów is came into being, and the numeral phrase governs the genitive plural muzeów, which tells you the English is one of the world's oldest museums.

  3. 03Sentence two: the fronted object, and why English must not copy it

Kolekcję zgromadziła grupa artystów. Kolekcję is accusative and grupa is nominative, so the group assembled the collection, not the other way round. Polish can front the object because the endings prevent confusion; English cannot, and a translation reading The collection assembled a group reverses the sentence. The neatest English keeps the Polish emphasis without breaking the grammar by using the passive: The collection was assembled in the 1930s by a group of avant-garde artists. Skupiona wokół, gathered around, agrees with grupa and takes the genitive of both names.

  4. 04Sentence three: the two impersonals

Zbiory przekazano miastu, a wystawę udostępniono publiczności. Neither verb has a subject at all; both objects are accusative and both indirect objects are dative, miastu and publiczności. English has one natural rendering, the passive: the holdings were handed over to the city, and the exhibition was opened to the public. Do not invent an agent — writing the artists handed the holdings over adds information the Polish deliberately withholds, and the whole point of the impersonal is that the agent is not being named. Jeszcze przed wojną is as early as before the war, or simply before the war.

  5. 05Sentence five: zaskoczeniem jest to, że and mieć stosunek do

Zaskoczeniem is an instrumental predicate, so the shape is it is a surprise that. Nie w stolicy, lecz w mieście fabrycznym is not in the capital but in a factory town, and lecz is the stronger but that follows a negative. The last clause is idiomatic and cannot be translated word for word: mieć do czegoś stosunek is to have an attitude towards something, so mieli do sztuki nowoczesnej stosunek co najmniej sceptyczny becomes regarded modern art with at least some scepticism. Którego mieszkańcy is whose inhabitants, referring back to the town rather than to the capital.

  6. 06Read the English back as English

The final check has nothing to do with Polish. Read your version aloud and ask whether an English reader who had never seen the original would notice anything odd. Two things usually survive from a first draft and should not: a which where a that or a comma is wanted, and a chain of passives that reads as heavy because all three came from Polish impersonals. Vary one of them if you can do so without adding an agent. Ten marks are available and they are awarded for English that works, not for evidence that you decoded each word.

Result: In Łódź, a city that lived for a hundred years off the textile industry, one of the world's oldest museums of modern art came into being. The collection was assembled in the 1930s by a group of avant-garde artists gathered around Władysław Strzemiński and Katarzyna Kobro. The holdings were handed over to the city, and the exhibition was opened to the public before the war. Today the Muzeum Sztuki operates in three buildings and shows both the work of the pre-war avant-garde and contemporary art. For many visitors it comes as a surprise that so radical a collection should have arisen not in the capital but in a factory town whose inhabitants at the time regarded modern art with at least some scepticism.

Exam focus

  • Build the vocabulary of looking, not only of naming: na pierwszym planie, w tle, kompozycja, barwa, światłocień, perspektywa (AO3).
  • Be able to say where a work is as well as who made it; stimulus texts about art are very often texts about museums and exhibitions (AO2).
  • Use sztuka precisely - it is art in general and also a stage play, and an authentic text will exploit the ambiguity without warning you (AO2).
  • Treat a painting as an argument rather than an illustration; that is the move that lifts an answer off the bottom of the AO4 ladder (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Declining muzeum in the singular. It does not change: w muzeum, do muzeum, z muzeum - only the adjective moves, as in w Muzeum Narodowym.
  • Confusing obraz, a single painting, with malarstwo, painting as an art form. Malarstwo Matejki is his painting in general; obraz Matejki is one canvas.
  • Using sztuka for a single artwork. A single work is dzieło or dzieło sztuki; sztuka is art as a whole, or a play.
  • Dropping the instrumental after być: Matejko był malarzem, never Matejko był malarz.
  • Losing diacritics in Łódź and światłocień. Both carry marks that change the word completely, and neither is caught by an English spellchecker.

Muzyka: from Chopin to disco polo#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7687 3.2.1.2 Sub-theme: Polish cultural life - musicLPAQA 7687 4.6.1 and 4.6.2 Paper 3 listening and responding - the summary in Polish, with content (AO1) and language (AO3, out of 5) awarded independently

Key points

This section serves the third bullet of sub-theme 3.2.1.2: music. It is the bullet with the most obvious anchor and the greatest risk of collapsing into a list. Fryderyk Chopin, born in 1810 and dead in Paris in 1849, wrote almost entirely for the piano and gave two Polish dance forms — the mazurek and the polonez — a permanent place in European concert music, alongside the nokturn, the etiuda and the ballada. The Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny imienia Fryderyka Chopina has been held in Warsaw since 1927 and takes place every five years, which makes it a live cultural event rather than a heritage fact. That matters for the exam: an event that happens now generates interviews, reviews and disagreement, and those are the registers Papers 1 and 3 actually record.
After Chopin the line runs through composers an examiner will recognise. Karol Szymanowski drew on the music of the Tatra highlanders and wrote both the ballet Harnasie and a Stabat Mater. Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki made post-war Poland one of the centres of European composition, Penderecki's Tren, Ofiarom Hiroszimy of 1960 and his Pasja według świętego Łukasza of 1966 bringing him international attention while he was still a young man, before he turned in later life towards a far more traditional idiom. Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's third symphony, the Symfonia pieśni żałosnych of 1976, reached an audience far beyond the ordinary reach of contemporary classical music after a recording made in the early 1990s — a genuinely unusual thing to happen to a modern symphony, and a fact that carries an argument about how a country's music travels.
Two further strands are worth having, because they connect this bullet to the cinema bullet and because they are less predictable than the concert canon. Polish film music is a subject in itself: Wojciech Kilar wrote both concert works and scores for Polish and international cinema, and Zbigniew Preisner's music is inseparable from Kieślowski's later films — write about a Kieślowski film without mentioning its score and you have described half the work. Polish jazz has its own history, beginning in a period when the music was officially discouraged and played semi-privately: Krzysztof Komeda, who wrote for the young Roman Polański, and later Tomasz Stańko, whose trumpet playing found an international audience through recordings made abroad. Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw is among the oldest jazz festivals in Europe.
The specification says music, not classical music, and the strongest answers take it literally. Czesław Niemen's Dziwny jest ten świat of 1967 is the standard reference point for Polish popular song; Maryla Rodowicz has been a fixture since the same decade; Republika and Kult belong to the 1980s, Myslovitz to the 1990s, and Dawid Podsiadło and sanah fill arenas now. Two genres are habitually dismissed and should not be. Disco polo grew out of village and small-town dance music around the turn of the 1990s and became a genuine mass phenomenon; Polish hip-hop emerged across the same decade, particularly in Silesia and the larger cities, and has produced some of the most widely heard Polish-language records since. A candidate who can explain why either of them matters is doing AO4 work, not filling space.
Worked example

A Paper 3 listening summary built to between 90 and 100 words

You have heard a four-minute studio recording in which a music journalist and a festival organiser discuss what the Chopin Competition means for Warsaw. The journalist argues that the competition brings the city an international audience once every five years, and that its effect on young Polish pianists matters more than the prize itself. The organiser adds that live broadcasting has changed the event completely, since far more people now follow it at home than in the concert hall, and says the real problem is the four years in between, when the audience for classical music shrinks again. The question is: Streść po polsku, co rozmówcy mówią o znaczeniu Konkursu Chopinowskiego.

  1. 01Count the content points before writing anything

There are five: the international audience every five years; the effect on young pianists, rated above the prize; live broadcasting changing the event; more people watching at home than in the hall; and the fall in interest between competitions. Write them as five numbered fragments in Polish, not sentences. The content mark here is AO1, awarded independently of the language mark, and it is awarded per point — so a summary that reads beautifully but carries three of the five loses two marks that no amount of good Polish can recover. Counting first is what stops that happening.

  2. 02Use your own words, because the language mark depends on it

The specification is explicit on both halves. The AO1 content mark is given whether the point is in your own words or lifted, but lifted language is never eligible for the AO3 mark. So lifting costs you nothing on content and everything on language. Three reformulation moves cover most cases: change the part of speech, so transmituje się na żywo becomes transmisje na żywo; negate the opposite, so mało osób przychodzi becomes więcej osób śledzi je w domu; and generalise the noun, so wielu młodych pianistów becomes młodzi pianiści.

  3. 03Draft in Polish and count the words as you go

The rule is precise and it is a rule about marking, not about penalties: a long summary is marked for content or for language only until the first natural break, usually the end of a sentence or main clause, between 90 and 100 words. Everything after that is simply not read. So the last content point must arrive before word 90, and the sentence carrying it must be finished. Short summaries carry no automatic penalty but are self-penalising, because five content points will not fit into sixty words. Aim to land the final full stop between 90 and 100.

  4. 04Attribute the two speakers separately

The passage involves more than one speaker, which Paper 3 guarantees for at least one recording, and a summary that merges them has lost information the question asked for. Polish gives you the reporting verbs cheaply: dziennikarz podkreśla, że; organizator dodaje, że; obaj zwracają uwagę na. Note the government. Podkreślać and dodawać take a że-clause; zwracać uwagę takes na plus the accusative; and obaj is the masculine personal form for two men, where dwoje would be needed for a mixed pair. Getting the attribution right is comprehension, not decoration.

  5. 05Run the AO3 pass, which is where the five language marks live

The band descriptor asks for language that is mainly accurate with only occasional minor errors, and for the ability to manipulate complex language accurately where the task requires it. So the final pass looks for two things. First, errors: check every case ending, and in particular the genitives forced by negation and by brakować. Second, range: the draft below carries an adjectival present participle in wykraczające, a comparative in ważniejszy, an impersonal-style genitive after brakuje, and a contrastive natomiast. None was inserted for display; each is what the sentence needed.

Exam focus

  • Do not let the music bullet become a list of names; every name must carry a claim that someone could argue with (AO4).
  • Learn the Polish genre words - mazurek, polonez, nokturn, muzyka poważna, muzyka rozrywkowa - and use them untranslated inside Polish sentences (AO3).
  • Prepare for listening specifically: interviews with musicians and reviews of concerts are exactly the register and the multi-speaker format Paper 3 records (AO1).
  • Take popular music seriously; disco polo and Polish hip-hop are mass phenomena, and an answer that sneers at them has described rather than analysed them (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Giving słuchać an accusative object. It takes the genitive: słuchać muzyki, słuchać koncertu, never słuchać muzykę.
  • Writing gra fortepian. To play an instrument is grać na plus the locative: gra na fortepianie, gra na skrzypcach.
  • Missing that koncert carries two senses. Koncert fortepianowy is a piano concerto; iść na koncert is going to a gig.
  • Getting Chopin's name wrong in Polish. He is Fryderyk Chopin, and the competition is imienia Fryderyka Chopina, with both names in the genitive.
  • Confusing utwór, a piece of music, with tekst, the lyrics, and piosenka, a song. All three appear in any review and they are not interchangeable.

Pisać o kulturze: the register, syntax and evaluative vocabulary of cultural writing#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7687 3.2.1 Theme: Artistic culture in the Polish-speaking world past and presentLPAQA 7687 4.6.4 Paper 3 multi-skill task - approximately 200 words requiring analysis, personal reaction and the drawing of a conclusion

Key points

This section serves all three bullets of sub-theme 3.2.1.2 at once, because the language of writing about culture is the same whether the object is a film, a painting or a symphony. Cultural writing in Polish sits in a particular register: more formal than conversation, less formal than legal or academic prose, and heavily dependent on a small stock of connectives and evaluative frames that carry the argumentative work. Its most visible marker is a preference for the impersonal and the nominal over the first person. Where an English student writes I think the film is important, Polish cultural prose is likelier to write film uchodzi za jeden z najważniejszych, the film is regarded as one of the most important, or trudno przecenić znaczenie tego filmu, it is hard to overstate this film's significance.
The connectives are worth memorising as a set, because they are what an examiner reads as structure. Przede wszystkim, above all, opens the strongest point. Ponadto and co więcej add to it. Natomiast contrasts two things without opposing them, whereas jednak and mimo to genuinely concede. Z jednej strony and z drugiej strony set up and complete a balance, and opening the first without ever writing the second is one of the most visible faults in a weak essay. Warto zauważyć, że and należy podkreślić, że introduce a point the writer wants weighted. Wynika z tego, że draws a consequence and podsumowując closes. Six or seven of these, used correctly, give a 300-word essay an audible shape, and shape is a substantial part of what the AO4 grid means when it says argument.
Evaluative vocabulary needs the same treatment and a warning attached. Wybitny, outstanding; przełomowy, ground-breaking; nowatorski, innovative; wpływowy, influential; niedoceniany, underrated; kultowy, cult; kontrowersyjny, controversial. Each is usable and each is worthless without a reason behind it. Film jest wybitny is an assertion; film jest wybitny przede wszystkim ze względu na zdjęcia, the film is outstanding above all on account of its cinematography, is a claim someone could disagree with, and disagreement is what makes it an argument rather than a compliment. Note the government of the three phrases that recur most: ze względu na takes the accusative, pod względem takes the genitive, and w porównaniu z takes the instrumental. Getting those three right is worth more than another five adjectives.
Finally the syntax, where the specification's own list meets this theme most directly. Polish word order is flexible and the flexibility carries meaning: the element placed first is the element being foregrounded. Zdjęcia są w tym filmie najciekawsze is a neutral statement about the cinematography; Najciekawsze w tym filmie są zdjęcia says that of everything in the film it is the cinematography that stands out. The specification makes the same point with its own pair, Ładny jest ten kolor against To dziecko jest wesołe. Cultural writing also leans nominal — pod wpływem, w wyniku, z powodu, dzięki — which lets one clause carry more information in fewer words. Dzięki takes the dative and means thanks to, with a positive colouring; z powodu takes the genitive and is neutral or negative. Confusing them is a register error rather than a grammatical one, and it is noticed.
Worked example

Building an argued paragraph of Polish out of one bare fact

You know one thing: Paweł Pawlikowski's Ida won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the first Polish film to do so. On its own that fact scores almost nothing in either the Paper 3 multi-skill task or the Paper 1 research-project essay. Build it into an argued paragraph of about 90 words of Polish.

  1. 01Turn the fact into a claim

A fact answers what happened; a claim answers what it shows, and only the second is arguable. Ask what the Oscar is evidence for. Three candidate claims present themselves: that it marked a turning point for Polish cinema; that it revealed something that already existed; or that it changed how Polish cinema is discussed abroad rather than how it is made. Choose one and let the others become the counter-pressure. The claim chosen here is the second, because it lets the paragraph use everything the cinema section established about Łódź and Gdynia rather than discarding it.

  2. 02Find the counter-pressure before you write

An argued paragraph needs something to push against, and the readiest source is the received view. Nagroda bywa przedstawiana jako moment przełomowy — the award is often presented as a turning point — states the received view without endorsing it, and bywa, the frequentative of być, does the attributing work in one word. That single verb is worth learning for this theme: it lets you report a common opinion as a common opinion, which is precisely the attribution the AO4 grid rewards and precisely what a flat answer omits.

  3. 03Choose the connectives before choosing the sentences

Decide the skeleton first and the Polish gets easier. Here it is four moves: state the received view; qualify it with warto jednak zauważyć, że; draw the consequence with można by więc powiedzieć, że; and land a personal judgement with moim zdaniem. Notice that the personal reaction arrives last and arrives as a conclusion, which is exactly the order the multi-skill task asks for when it requires analysis, personal reaction and the drawing of a conclusion. Building the skeleton in English costs thirty seconds and prevents a paragraph that lists.

  4. 04Write it, letting the meaning choose the structures

Three structures are wanted here and each is wanted for a reason. The impersonal kształcono, they trained or training was done, is right because the agent is a whole institution over decades and naming it would be a digression. The adjectival passive participles nakręcony and zrealizowany compress two clauses about how the film was made into two modifiers, which is what lets 90 words carry an argument. And można by powiedzieć hedges the central claim without abandoning it — the conditional is the difference between a judgement and a pronouncement.

  5. 05Check the government, the agreement and the negation

Four things repay a second look. Kilkadziesiąt lat: the numeral governs the genitive plural. Kształcono operatorów i reżyserów: the impersonal takes an accusative object, and masculine personal nouns take the genitive form in the accusative plural. Nie stworzył polskiego kina: a negated transitive verb governs the genitive, so kino becomes kina. And festiwale pokazywały: festiwale is not masculine personal, so the past tense takes the non-masculine-personal plural ending, pokazywały and not pokazywali.

Exam focus

  • Memorise six or seven connectives and deploy them as the skeleton of every 200-word and 300-word answer; they are what an examiner reads as structure (AO3).
  • Never leave an evaluative adjective without a reason attached - the reason is what the AO4 grid calls evidence (AO4).
  • Learn the government of ze względu na, pod względem and w porównaniu z; all three recur in almost every cultural answer (AO3).
  • Use word order deliberately: the fronted element is the emphasised one, and the specification lists exactly this under syntax (AO3).
  • Read Polish reviews for their frames as well as their facts - the register is learned by imitation faster than by rule (AO2).

Typical mistakes

  • Opening z jednej strony and never writing z drugiej strony. The pair is one structure, and half of it is a fault an examiner sees at once.
  • Writing w porównaniu do. Standard Polish is w porównaniu z plus the instrumental.
  • Translating I think as myślę, że in every sentence. Polish cultural writing prefers wydaje się, że, moim zdaniem, or an impersonal construction, and repeated myślę reads as a school exercise.
  • Confusing dzięki, dative and positive, with z powodu, genitive and neutral or negative. Dzięki wojnie is not a sentence anyone meant to write.
  • Piling up adjectives with no ponieważ or ze względu na behind them. A string of superlatives scores on neither grid.

Active revision

§ 05

Exam technique: earning the AO3 range mark with the specification's own grammar list#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7687 3.3 Grammar - participles, impersonal forms, conditional, active and passive voice, reflexive verbs, aspects, comparison, and flexibility of word order depending on semantic emphasisLPAQA 7687 4.7.1 and 4.7.2 AO3 assessment criteria - a consistently secure grasp of grammar, the ability to manipulate complex language accurately, and a wide range of vocabulary appropriate to the context and the task

Key points

AO3 is worth 30 per cent of the qualification and it is not one thing. It appears as five marks for language on each of the two summary questions, as ten marks on the Paper 1 research-project essay, as ten on the Paper 3 multi-skill task, and as twenty on each of the two Paper 2 essays on the works. The wording of the grids repays literal reading, because it is the examiner's own definition of the job: the top band says the language is mainly accurate with only occasional minor errors, that the student shows a consistently secure grasp of grammar and is able to manipulate complex language accurately, and — in the essay grids — that the student uses a wide range of vocabulary appropriate to the context and the task. Range and accuracy are both named. Neither substitutes for the other.
Section 3.3 of the specification is where range is defined, and most students never read it as a checklist. It names participles of all four kinds: adjectival present czekający, adjectival passive napisany, adverbial present czekając, adverbial past wziąwszy. It names impersonal forms, with często mówiono o tym and zadano mi pytanie as its own examples. It names the conditional, czytałbym and abym; the passive voice, Syn jest myty, set against the active Mama myje syna; reflexive verbs, Syn się myje; the aspect pair czytałem against przeczytałem; comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs; and, under syntax, flexibility of word order depending on semantic emphasis. That list is the examiner's own answer to the question of what range means, and it is short enough to audit a finished essay against in five minutes.
The distinction that decides the mark is between deploying a structure where the meaning calls for it and sprinkling it for display. An examiner notices both. A passive that appears because the agent genuinely does not matter — Obraz namalowano w 1878 roku, where naming Matejko would be a digression from a sentence about the painting — reads as control. The same construction dropped into a sentence whose agent is the whole point reads as a party trick, and it usually goes wrong as well: the impersonal in -no and -to takes an accusative object and has no subject at all, so a student reaching for it while still thinking in English produces a nominative and loses the accuracy mark alongside the range mark. Range earns credit only when it is accurate, which is why the safest way to widen your range is to widen it inside structures you already control.
Writing about culture happens to be the natural home of three of those structures, which is why this topic is the best place in the specification to practise them. The impersonal is what Polish uses for what was made when by whom does not matter: film nakręcono, obraz namalowano, symfonię skomponowano, wystawę otwarto. The adjectival passive participle turns the same information into a modifier and compresses a whole clause into two words: film nakręcony w 2013 roku, obraz namalowany przez Matejkę, utwór skomponowany przez Chopina. And the conditional is how Polish hedges an evaluation without abandoning it: można by powiedzieć, że; trudno byłoby zrozumieć; nie twierdziłbym, że. Three structures, three jobs, and all three are things this sub-theme makes you want to say anyway — which is the whole difference between grammar you have learned and grammar you use.
Worked example

Auditing a flat paragraph against the section 3.3 list

Here is a student's Paper 3 multi-skill paragraph about Polish music. Every sentence is grammatically correct, and it would sit in the middle of the AO3 band. „Chopin jest bardzo znanym polskim kompozytorem. On napisał wiele mazurków i polonezów. Konkurs Chopinowski jest w Warszawie. Ludzie organizują go od 1927 roku. Myślę, że ten konkurs jest ważny dla młodych pianistów. Górecki napisał trzecią symfonię w 1976 roku. Ludzie nagrali ją w 1992 roku i wtedy stała się popularna.” Audit it against the specification's grammar list and rewrite the sentences that genuinely want a different structure.

  1. 01Audit first, and mark what is absent rather than what is wrong

Nothing here is incorrect, which is exactly why the paragraph is instructive. Running the section 3.3 list over it: no participle of any kind, no impersonal form, no conditional, no comparative or superlative beyond bardzo znany, no reflexive verb, and no sentence in which word order does any work. Every one of the seven sentences begins with its subject. Two of them use ludzie as a dummy subject, which is English thinking in Polish clothes. The audit produces five candidate repairs, and the discipline is to make only the repairs the meaning actually invites.

  2. 02Fix the dummy subjects, because that is where the impersonal earns its place

Ludzie organizują go od 1927 roku and Ludzie nagrali ją w 1992 roku both name an agent the writer does not know and does not need. That is the precise condition under which Polish uses the impersonal, so the repair is not decoration but correction. Trzecią symfonię Góreckiego skomponowano w 1976 roku puts the accusative object first and drops the agent entirely. Note that the impersonal is built on the perfective past stem and never agrees with anything: skomponowano, nagrano, wydano, otwarto — one form, whatever the object's gender.

  3. 03Compress a clause into a participle

Konkurs Chopinowski jest w Warszawie plus Ludzie organizują go od 1927 roku is two weak sentences carrying one idea. The adjectival passive participle folds the second into the first: Konkurs Chopinowski, organizowany w Warszawie od 1927 roku, odbywa się co pięć lat. Three things happen at once. The participle is imperfective, organizowany rather than zorganizowany, because the organising is repeated. Jest becomes the reflexive odbywa się, which is the idiomatic verb for an event taking place. And the freed-up space carries a new content point, the five-year cycle.

  4. 04Turn a flat evaluation into a hedged, argued one

Myślę, że ten konkurs jest ważny dla młodych pianistów asserts and stops. The conditional converts it into a judgement the reader could weigh: Można by powiedzieć, że dla młodych pianistów ważniejszy jest sam udział niż nagroda. Three gains. Można by is the conditional the grammar list names. Ważniejszy is a comparative, and comparison forces the sentence to say what the competition matters more than. And ważniejszy jest sam udział fronts the predicate, which is the specification's own Ładny jest ten kolor pattern used for emphasis rather than for ornament.

  5. 05Re-check every ending before you call it finished

The rewrite introduces new grammar and therefore new risk. Kilkadziesiąt mazurków: numerals above four govern the genitive plural. Dzięki którym: dzięki takes the dative, so the relative pronoun is którym, not których. Weszły: tańce is not masculine personal, so the past plural ends in -ły. Góreckiego: the surname declines as an adjective. And publiczność znacznie szerszą is an accusative feminine comparative agreeing with its noun. A range that fails its endings scores as inaccuracy, not as range.

Result: Fryderyk Chopin pozostaje najbardziej znanym polskim kompozytorem. Napisał kilkadziesiąt mazurków i polonezów, dzięki którym dwa polskie tańce weszły na stałe do muzyki europejskiej. Konkurs Chopinowski, organizowany w Warszawie od 1927 roku, odbywa się co pięć lat. Można by powiedzieć, że dla młodych pianistów ważniejszy jest sam udział niż nagroda. Trzecią symfonię Góreckiego skomponowano w 1976 roku, a nagranie wydane w 1992 roku przyniosło jej publiczność znacznie szerszą, niż zwykle ma muzyka współczesna. Ta sama treść, ta sama długość: doszły dwa imiesłowy bierne, forma bezosobowa, tryb przypuszczający, stopień wyższy i najwyższy, czasownik zwrotny oraz dwa zdania o przestawionym szyku.

Exam focus

  • Audit a finished draft against the section 3.3 list rather than trying to insert structures while composing; doing both at once produces errors in both (AO3).
  • Prefer a structure you control to one you met last week - inaccurate range scores in neither half of the grid (AO3).
  • Let the content choose the structure: the impersonal because the agent does not matter, the conditional because you are hedging an evaluation, the participle because you are short of words (AO3).
  • Read Polish reviews and museum texts for their structures as well as their facts; this is where these forms actually live, and imitation is faster than rule-learning (AO2).
  • Remember that AO3 appears in five places across three papers with three different totals; the habit that earns it is identical in all of them (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Giving the impersonal a subject. Symfonię skomponowano has an accusative object and no subject; Symfonia została skomponowana is the passive alternative, and there symfonia is nominative. Masculine inanimate nouns hide the difference, which is why students only discover it on a feminine one.
  • Reaching for wziąwszy-type adverbial past participles in ordinary prose. They are high in register and rare in use, and a misplaced one costs more than it earns.
  • Building an adverbial participle whose subject differs from that of the main clause. Oglądając film, muzyka mnie zaskoczyła is wrong, because the music was not watching the film.
  • Mixing the two passives. Obraz został sprzedany is one completed event; obraz jest sprzedawany is an ongoing or repeated process, and the aspect of the participle decides which.
  • Detaching the conditional particle. It is czytałbym, zrobiłbyś, moglibyśmy - the ending attaches to the verb, and by only moves forward onto a conjunction, as in gdybym or żebyś.

Active revision

Weź ostatni napisany przez siebie akapit o kulturze i sprawdź go według listy z punktu 3.3 specyfikacji. Jeżeli którejś konstrukcji brakuje, nie dopisuj jej na siłę — znajdź w akapicie zdanie, które i tak tej konstrukcji wymaga, i przepisz je.
