Święta i tradycje: festivals and traditions in Polish life

Festivals and traditions is sub-theme 3.2.1.1 of theme 3.2.1, Artistic culture in the Polish-speaking world past and present, and this topic carries all three of its bullet aspects: roots and origins, social and economic impact, and regional and local heritage. Content from the sub-theme can surface anywhere the specification says the themes are examined - in Paper 1's four stimulus texts, its summary question and its translation into English, and in Paper 3's listening passages, its translation into Polish and its multi-skill task. It reaches an AO4 grid in two specific places: as the cultural and social context of a work in Paper 2, and, for a student whose research topic is Tourism in Poland, in the Paper 1 research-project essay. The notes cover where the Polish festive year comes from and the vocabulary for saying so; the year itself as a working calendar with one usable Polish sentence per entry; what a festival actually does to a town socially and economically, described mechanically rather than numerically; the regional and local layer, including the two Polish entries on the UNESCO Representative List that belong to this sub-theme; and the AO4 ladder that turns a description into a claim the evidence genuinely supports. AQA 7687 is titled A-level Polish (Listening, Reading, Writing) and has no speaking assessment of any kind, so every task in these notes is a written one. Throughout, magnitudes are described comparatively rather than with figures, because no dictionary and no notes are permitted in any paper and a half-remembered statistic is worth less than a described mechanism.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is that a student can name the main occasions of the Polish festive year, say when each one falls and what happens at it, and describe a custom in correct Polish using the impersonal się form. Recognising the vocabulary at speed in an unseen text or recording - obrzęd, zwyczaj, procesja, dożynki, znicz, opłatek - matters more at this stage than evaluating anything.

higher level

The full A-level expects the student to move from description to a claim that evidence supports, and to know exactly what that evidence licenses. That means attributing a contested origin rather than asserting it, describing economic impact through its mechanism rather than through remembered figures, and distinguishing a living rite from a staged one while arguing about where a particular case falls. It also means handling the grammar the topic demands - impersonal forms, numeral government, date genitives and the instrumental after dzielić się - accurately enough that the AO3 grid is never what limits the mark.

Key points

This section serves the first bullet of sub-theme 3.2.1.1, roots and origins. The Polish festive year runs on two clocks at once, and seeing that is essentially the whole of the bullet. The first is the liturgical year, rok liturgiczny, whose great feasts hang off Easter and therefore move: Wielkanoc itself, Wielki Post which precedes it, and Boże Ciało, Corpus Christi, which falls sixty days after Easter Sunday and so lands in late May or in June. The second is the older agricultural year, tied to the sun and the fields - the solstices, the sowing, the harvest. Poles distinguish święta ruchome, moveable feasts, from święta stałe, fixed ones: Wszystkich Świętych is always 1 November and Wigilia always 24 December, while dożynki, the harvest festival, moves because the harvest does.
Beneath the liturgical layer, ethnographers point to practices that plainly predate it, and the vocabulary for saying so is worth having exactly. Noc świętojańska, St John's Eve on 23 and 24 June, carries the name of John the Baptist over a midsummer rite that researchers of folk culture link to the pre-Christian noc Kupały: bonfires, wreaths floated on water, and the hunt for the mythical kwiat paproci. Topienie Marzanny, the drowning of a straw effigy at the start of spring, survives as a children's custom in Polish schools. And dziady, the old rite of feeding the ancestors, is what many scholars connect to the Polish attachment to graves at Wszystkich Świętych and Zaduszki. The Polish for the relation is precise: wywodzić się z, to derive from; sięgać korzeniami, to reach back by its roots; ślady dawnych wierzeń, traces of older beliefs.
The caution matters as much as the claim, and stating it is itself the AO4 move this topic is built around. A strand of scholarship argues that the pagan-survival story is told far too confidently: much of what is now called odwieczny, immemorial, was written down and tidied up only in the nineteenth century, when folklorists were collecting and a partitioned nation was looking for a culture to call its own. Some customs were standardised in the recording, and a few were effectively reconstructed. That does not make them false - an invented tradition observed for a century and a half is a real tradition - but it does mean continuity is a claim needing evidence rather than a given. In Polish: część badaczy uważa, że …; to kwestia sporna; trudno dowieść, że zwyczaj przetrwał bez zmian.
The traffic runs both ways, which is why absorption rather than replacement is the accurate word. The Church did not delete the old calendar; it gave it patrons and new meanings, and several customs are entirely Christian in their present logic - święconka blesses the food that ends the Lenten fast, the palma wielkanocna belongs to Palm Sunday, and the flower carpets of Boże Ciało are laid for a Eucharistic procession to walk on. Meanwhile a secular Poland keeps producing new observances with exactly the shape of the old ones: the Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy holds its finał every January, with volunteers, collecting tins, stickers and a shared moment after dark, and Juwenalia empties the lecture halls each spring. Tradition in Poland is not a closed list handed down intact, and a candidate who writes as though it were has already capped their marks.
Worked example

Reading and responding in Polish, and the lifting decision

This is a specimen stimulus text of the kind Paper 1 sets, written here for practice. Questions: (a) Jak, według tekstu, Kościół potraktował dawne święto przesilenia letniego? (2 marks) (b) Przed czym ostrzega część historyków i dlaczego? (3 marks)

  1. 01Read both questions before reading the text

Paper 1 gives you four stimulus texts, a translation and a 40-mark essay inside two and a half hours, so selective reading is not a luxury. Take the interrogatives first. Jak … potraktował asks for a verb of treatment, which means your answer must contain an action the Church performed, not a description of the festival. Przed czym … i dlaczego asks for two separate things: the object of the warning, and its cause. A three-mark question with two halves is telling you the marks are split, and an answer that supplies only the warning has abandoned a mark before it starts writing.

  2. 02Locate answer (a) and read the nie …, lecz … pair whole

The sentence is Kościół nie usunął dawnego święta, lecz nadał mu nowego patrona. A candidate who reads to the comma and stops has recorded the exact opposite of the passage. Note the grammar while you are there, because you may want to reuse it: usunąć takes an accusative object, but under negation the object goes into the genitive, hence dawnego święta; and nadać takes a dative person and an accusative thing, hence nadał mu nowego patrona, with patron declining as a masculine animate. The whole content of the answer sits in that one contrast.

  3. 03Decide the lifting question using the specification's own rule

Section 4.4.2 is explicit. In comprehension questions carrying no AO3 marks, where the natural answer consists entirely or partly of words from the text, you may use that material without rephrasing, and minor spelling errors that do not distort meaning are tolerated. But no AO2 mark is awarded where the response contains irrelevant material or lifts an element that does not match the phrasing of the question set. So reusing nie usunął dawnego święta, lecz nadał mu nowego patrona is safe here. Copying the next sentence about nineteenth-century folklorists as well is not - it is irrelevant to question (a), and irrelevance withholds the mark you had already earned.

  4. 04Build answer (b) around the verb's government

Ostrzegać przed czymś takes the instrumental, so if you reuse the text's own verb you are committed to przed zbyt pewnym mówieniem o pogańskich przeżytkach, with mówienie in the instrumental and przeżytki in the locative after o. The dlaczego half then needs a cause clause: ponieważ wiele zwyczajów uznawanych dziś za odwieczne spisano i uporządkowano dopiero w XIX wieku. Note that the passage uses the past impersonal spisano and uporządkowano; reusing those forms is both faithful to the source and a quiet demonstration of the impersonal forms listed in section 3.3.5.

  5. 05Check the diacritics before you move on

Minor spelling errors are tolerated only where they do not distort meaning, and in Polish a missing kreska or ogonek routinely does distort it. Świętego without the ogonek is not a word. Przeżytkach with a plain z is a different consonant. Zwyczajów without the accent on the o is not the genitive plural you meant. Sixty seconds spent running your eye over the diacritics of an answer you have already written is the cheapest mark in the paper, and it costs nothing you needed elsewhere.

Result: (a) Kościół nie usunął dawnego święta, lecz nadał mu nowego patrona - to znaczy schrystianizował je, zamiast je zwalczać. (b) Część historyków ostrzega przed zbyt pewnym mówieniem o pogańskich przeżytkach, ponieważ wiele zwyczajów uznawanych dziś za odwieczne spisano i uporządkowano dopiero w XIX wieku.

Exam focus

  • Say where a custom comes from with the right verb - wywodzić się z, sięgać korzeniami, mieć rodowód - instead of asserting a bare pagan origin (AO4).
  • Read nie …, lecz … as a single unit in a stimulus text: the second half reverses the first, and losing it reverses your answer (AO2).
  • Attribute a contested origin with zdaniem badaczy or część historyków uważa, because an unattributed claim is precisely what the AO4 grid treats as an unsupported conclusion (AO4).
  • Keep the past impersonal forms ready - spisano, uporządkowano, obchodzono - since they are on the specification's own grammar list and are the natural register for saying what used to be done (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Asserting pagan roots as settled fact. Ethnographers disagree about how much really is continuous, and an unattributed origin claim is an AO4 conclusion with no evidence behind it.
  • Confusing wigilia with Wigilia. With a small letter it is the eve of any feast, so wigilia Bożego Ciała is the day before Corpus Christi; with a capital it is Christmas Eve.
  • Translating origins as oryginały. Origin is pochodzenie or rodowód; an oryginał is an original copy of something.
  • Writing that the Church banned or destroyed the older customs. The documented pattern in Poland is absorption - a new patron and a new meaning over an existing date.
  • Using tradycja for a single occasion. A tradycja is a transmitted practice; one event is a wydarzenie or an uroczystość.

Active revision

Fig. 1The Polish festive year in eight entries: when each falls, what happens at it, and one correct Polish sentence a student can reuse. The model sentence in the Wigilia row is emphasised because it carries the two structures this topic uses most - dzielić się with the instrumental, and the free place left at the table.

Key points

This section extends the first bullet by turning the festive year into vocabulary you can deploy in any paper, and it keeps the roots visible while doing so. Two lexical points repay learning immediately. Wigilia with a capital letter is Christmas Eve, while wigilia with a small one is the eve of any feast, so wigilia Bożego Ciała is the day before Corpus Christi. And oktawa is the eight-day tail of a great feast, which is why Kraków's Lajkonik pageant is placed w oktawę Bożego Ciała rather than on a date. Karnawał runs from Epiphany to Ash Wednesday; its final week opens with tłusty czwartek and the pączki and closes with ostatki. Wielki Post, Lent, begins on Środa Popielcowa and ends at Wielkanoc.
The register in which Polish describes a custom is impersonal, and mastering it is the highest-value grammatical move available in this topic. Section 3.3.5 of the specification lists impersonal forms explicitly, offering często mówiono o tym and zadano mi pytanie as its own examples. There are two devices. The reflexive impersonal, się with a third-person singular verb, states what is done in general: je się pączki, święci się pokarmy, zapala się znicze, puszcza się wianki, leje się wosk. The past impersonal in -no or -to says what used to be done, with no subject at all: dawniej wróżono, kiedyś obchodzono, wieniec niesiono do kościoła. Switching between the two is how a Polish writer marks the difference between a living custom and a remembered one, and an examiner will notice that you can do it.
Then the government of the verbs and the time expressions, both of which cost marks quietly. Obchodzić takes a direct object: obchodzić Wielkanoc, obchodzić imieniny. Brać udział and uczestniczyć take w with the locative: brać udział w procesji. Przygotowywać się takes do with the genitive: przygotowywać się do świąt. For dates, w with the accusative marks a named day - w Wigilię, w Wielką Sobotę, w tłusty czwartek, w noc świętojańską - while a numbered date goes into the bare genitive: pierwszego listopada, dwudziestego czwartego grudnia. Na with the accusative covers going somewhere for a feast, wracać na święta, which is the phrase any text about the Polish diaspora will use. Learn all of these as whole phrases, because a case error here is visible in every sentence you write.
The table below is the working form of all this, and it is built to be memorised in two directions. Read across a row and you have a festival with its date, its content and one correct Polish sentence you can lift straight into an answer. Read down the last column and you have eight sentence patterns, most of them impersonal, that will carry you through a translation or a summary. The Wigilia row is emphasised because it is the entry a stimulus text is likeliest to assume you already know, and because its model sentence contains two of the most reusable structures in the topic: dzielić się czymś, which takes the instrumental, as in dzielimy się opłatkiem, and zostawić wolne miejsce przy stole, the detail every source on Polish Christmas mentions and very few candidates can actually say.
Worked example

Translation into Polish, with every grammatical decision justified

Paper 3 sets a translation from English into Polish of at least 100 words and provides a supporting text in Polish giving some of the vocabulary and structures you will need. Here is the opening of a specimen passage, written for practice: In many Polish homes Christmas Eve is more important than Christmas Day itself. Twelve dishes are served, the family shares the wafer before the meal, and one place is left free at the table. Younger people say that they keep the custom, although they no longer always know where it came from. The supporting Polish text supplies: Wigilia, Boże Narodzenie, dwanaście potraw, dzielić się opłatkiem, wolne miejsce przy stole, podtrzymywać zwyczaj, pochodzić.

  1. 01Mine the supporting text before you translate a word

This is the feature that makes Paper 3's translation different from Paper 1's, and most candidates waste it. Read the supporting Polish text first and mark it up: every noun with the gender and case it appears in, every verb with its aspect, every fixed collocation whole. Dzielić się opłatkiem arrives with its instrumental already attached. Wolne miejsce przy stole arrives with przy plus the locative already attached. Copying a structure the paper has handed you is not cheating; it is the task design. What the supporting text does not give you - the comparative, the conjunction, the reported speech - is where you will actually have to make decisions.

  2. 02Christmas Eve is more important than Christmas Day itself

Wigilia is feminine, so the comparative adjective must be feminine too: ważniejsza, not ważniejszy. The comparison can be built with niż plus the nominative or od plus the genitive, and niż is the safer choice under pressure because it leaves the second term in the case it already had. Itself is samo, agreeing with the neuter Boże Narodzenie. The locative plural of the opening phrase needs three agreements at once: w wielu polskich domach. The result is W wielu polskich domach Wigilia jest ważniejsza niż samo Boże Narodzenie.

  3. 03Twelve dishes are served - the passive that should not be a passive

English uses an agentless passive; Polish, for a general custom, uses the reflexive impersonal, and reaching for a literal passive here is the commonest way this sentence goes wrong. Podaje się is the form. Then the numeral: dwanaście belongs to the five-and-above group, so it governs the genitive plural potraw, and the verb stays third-person singular. Podaje się dwanaście potraw. Three separate rules - impersonal, numeral government, singular agreement - are all being tested in five words, which is exactly why translation is worth ten marks.

  4. 04The family shares the wafer, and one place is left free

Dzielić się governs the instrumental, so the wafer becomes opłatkiem; przed governs the instrumental too, so before the meal is przed kolacją, and kolacja is the right noun because the Wigilia meal is an evening one. Aspect: this is a repeated annual custom, so both verbs stay imperfective - dzieli się, not podzieli się. For the last clause the impersonal returns, and Polish word order lets you front the place for emphasis, which section 3.3.11 explicitly rewards: a przy stole zostawia się jedno wolne miejsce.

  5. 05The reported clause, the concession, and the final check

Although is chociaż, which is on the specification's conjunction list. Polish reported speech keeps the tense of the original utterance, so they say that they keep becomes mówią, że podtrzymują - present, not past. Where it came from stays present as well: skąd on pochodzi, with the pronoun on referring back to the masculine zwyczaj. Then run the check in a fixed order - case after every preposition, aspect on every verb, gender agreement on every adjective, and finally the diacritics, which no gate and no examiner will restore for you.

Result: W wielu polskich domach Wigilia jest ważniejsza niż samo Boże Narodzenie. Podaje się dwanaście potraw, rodzina dzieli się opłatkiem przed kolacją, a przy stole zostawia się jedno wolne miejsce. Młodsi mówią, że podtrzymują ten zwyczaj, chociaż już nie zawsze wiedzą, skąd on pochodzi.

Exam focus

  • Learn each occasion as a whole sentence rather than a noun; a stored sentence survives exam pressure where a stored word does not (AO3).
  • Use the reflexive impersonal - je się, święci się, zapala się - whenever you describe a custom in general, because it is the register Polish sources use themselves (AO3).
  • Get the date forms right: w with the accusative for a named day, the bare genitive for a numbered one - w Wigilię but dwudziestego czwartego grudnia (AO3).
  • Recognise the festival vocabulary at speed in a heard passage; a Paper 3 recording will not wait while you work out what dożynki means (AO1).

Typical mistakes

  • Getting numeral government wrong. Five and above takes the genitive plural and a neuter singular verb: podaje się dwanaście potraw, never dwanaście potrawy or dwanaście potraw są podawane.
  • Writing a numbered date in the nominative. It is pierwszego listopada and dwudziestego czwartego grudnia, in the genitive, not pierwszy listopad.
  • Losing a diacritic that changes the word. Pączki are doughnuts and paczki are parcels; święto without the ogonek is not a word; dożynki with a plain z is not the harvest festival.
  • Mixing up obchodzić, to celebrate, with obchodzić się z kimś, to treat somebody in a certain way. Only the first takes a bare accusative.
  • Using the first person plural where Polish uses the impersonal. Obchodzimy describes what your family does; obchodzi się describes what the country does, and the second is what a description of a custom needs.

Wpływ społeczny i gospodarczy: what a festival does to a society and a town#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7687 section 3.2.1.1 Festivals and traditions - social and economic impactLPAQA 7687 sections 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 Paper 1 reading and responding - the summary question, with content (AO2) and language (AO3, out of 5) awarded independently

Key points

This section serves the second bullet of sub-theme 3.2.1.1, social and economic impact, and it begins with a discipline rather than with content. You will be tempted to reach for numbers and you should refuse. No dictionary and no notes are allowed in any of the three papers, so a figure written from memory is a figure nobody can check, and a wrong one damages exactly the quality the AO4 grid rewards, which is evidence that supports a conclusion. Describe the mechanism instead. A sentence about what a festival does to accommodation, transport, seasonal hiring and a municipal budget is checkable in principle and reads as knowledge; a remembered percentage reads as decoration. Note in passing two Polish words that look like one: wpływ, singular, is influence, and wpływy, plural, is revenue.
Socially, festivals are the machinery by which a society keeps repeating itself, and Poland supplies unusually clear examples. Imieniny, the name day, was traditionally kept more warmly than urodziny, the birthday - an older Pole may still expect the call on their saint's day - and the balance has shifted towards birthdays among younger generations, which is a directional statement you can make safely without a statistic. Święta pull the diaspora home, and wracać na święta is an ordinary phrase that any text on emigration will use. Customs travel between generations by doing rather than by telling, since a child learns to hand round the opłatek by watching, so przekaz międzypokoleniowy, intergenerational transmission, earns its place in an essay. The Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy shows that a wholly secular event can produce the same effects: a fixed January date, volunteers, and a shared moment everyone recognises.
Economically, the mechanism is worth learning as a sequence, because a sequence is already an argument. Rooms fill first - hotels, kwatery prywatne, rented flats - and prices rise with them; restaurants and stalls take more; carriers put on extra services. The gmina, the municipality, spends before it receives, since stewarding, security, cleaning, staging and insurance are all paid up front while any return arrives later as tax receipts and reputation. Local suppliers and craftsmen get orders they would not otherwise have, and short-term jobs appear, praca sezonowa, which disappear when the festival does. The counterweight is seasonality itself: a town living on three weeks has eleven quiet months, and residents carry costs - noise, traffic, prices - that visitors do not. Polish examples run the whole scale, from the Jarmark Dominikański in Gdańsk, a fair going back to the thirteenth century, to Open'er in Gdynia and Pol'and'Rock.
The Polish for all this is a short, high-yield list: baza noclegowa, the stock of accommodation; obłożenie hoteli, occupancy; zatrudnienie sezonowe; koszty organizacji; budżet gminy; promocja miasta and wizerunek, image; sezonowość; and the verbs przyciągać turystów, przynosić dochód, generować koszty and opłacać się. The currency is the złoty, abbreviated zł, and nothing else. Just as valuable are the hedges that let you be exact about not knowing: trudno oszacować, it is hard to estimate; według danych samorządu, according to local-government figures; wpływów nie da się łatwo przeliczyć, the revenues cannot easily be added up. Two events make the economic case by themselves. The Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina comes to Warsaw only once every five years, and Camerimage has changed host city more than once - which tells you a festival is an asset cities compete to hold.
Worked example

The Paper 1 summary question, built to between 90 and 100 words

This is a specimen stimulus text of the kind Paper 1 sets, written here for practice.

  1. 01Count the content points before writing anything

The AO2 mark is awarded point by point, so the first job is to find out how many points the text actually contains. Here there are six: accommodation and restaurants fill and transport is increased; the municipality pays out before any money comes in; craftsmen and suppliers gain orders they would not otherwise have; residents are divided; the mayor identifies the real difficulty as the eleven quiet months. Listing them in note form takes two minutes and turns the word budget into a resource-allocation problem rather than a guess. With roughly a hundred words available, six points means about sixteen words each - which tells you at once that nothing can be described twice.

  2. 02Decide what lifting will and will not cost you

The specification separates the two marks completely. The content mark is given for the information regardless of whether it is in your own words or lifted, but no content mark is awarded where the answer includes irrelevant material or copies inappropriately, and lifted language is never eligible for the AO3 mark. The consequence is precise: copying will not by itself lose you AO2, but it will empty the AO3 grid, which is worth five marks. So plan to carry the content across faithfully and rebuild the language deliberately, rather than deciding sentence by sentence.

  3. 03Reformulate systematically rather than word by word

Three moves cover most of it. Change the voice: hotele są zajęte becomes zapełniają się hotele. Change the part of speech: wydatki ponosi wcześniej becomes musi najpierw wydać pieniądze. Change the evaluative word: mówią o tym dwojako becomes oceniają to niejednoznacznie. Each of these is a different structure from the original, which is what the AO3 grid means by manipulating complex language, and none of them changes the information, which is what protects the AO2 mark. Doing this from your notes rather than from the text is what stops you drifting back into the source's wording.

  4. 04Place the conclusion before the hundredth word

A long summary is marked for content or language only until the first natural break, usually the end of a sentence or main clause, between 90 and 100 words. That is not a penalty clause, it is a cut-off: anything after it is simply not read. So the final sentence has to start early enough to finish inside the window. The draft below reaches its last full stop at ninety-six words, with the evaluative closing sentence beginning at word eighty-eight. Counting as you write, in blocks of about twenty, is far quicker than counting at the end and discovering that your best sentence is outside the window.

  5. 05Run the AO3 check as a separate pass

The five language marks are a separate grid rewarding accuracy plus the accurate handling of complex language. So check for both. Accuracy: cases after prepositions, aspect, agreement, diacritics. Complexity: the draft carries zarówno …, jak i …, a genitive under negation in takich zamówień nie dostają, and a deliberate case contrast in jednych cieszy rozgłos, innym przeszkadzają hałas, since cieszyć takes the accusative and przeszkadzać the dative. Those three structures are what lift a summary from reasonably accurate into the band that manipulates complex language accurately.

Result: Festiwal odmienia miasto tylko na trzy tygodnie, ale zmienia w nim niemal wszystko. Zapełniają się hotele i kwatery prywatne, restauracje mają więcej klientów, a przewoźnicy dokładają kursy. Samorząd musi jednak najpierw wydać pieniądze na ochronę i sprzątanie, a dopiero potem liczyć na wpływy. Korzystają też rzemieślnicy i miejscowi dostawcy, którzy przez resztę roku takich zamówień nie dostają. Mieszkańcy oceniają to niejednoznacznie: jednych cieszy rozgłos, innym przeszkadzają hałas, korki i wyższe ceny. Zdaniem burmistrza najtrudniejsze nie jest jednak samo wydarzenie, lecz jedenaście miesięcy ciszy, które po nim następują. Sezonowość jest więc zarówno siłą, jak i słabością miasta.

Exam focus

  • Describe economic impact as a mechanism - rooms, transport, seasonal hiring, the municipal budget - and never as a figure you cannot check (AO4).
  • Keep both sides. The bullet is social and economic impact, not benefits, and the top AO4 band asks for evaluation, which a one-sided answer cannot demonstrate (AO4).
  • Reformulate rather than copy in the summary question: content can still be credited when it is lifted, but lifted language is never eligible for the AO3 mark (AO3).
  • Distinguish wpływ from wpływy when you read. Influence and revenues are not the same word in use, and a stimulus text on festivals will contain both (AO2).

Typical mistakes

  • Inventing a number. Without a dictionary or notes there is no way to verify it, and an invented magnitude undermines the one thing AO4 asks for, which is a conclusion supported by evidence.
  • Writing only about benefits. The specification's bullet says impact, and an answer with no costs in it cannot reach the evaluation the top band describes.
  • Treating gospodarczy and ekonomiczny as interchangeable. Wpływ gospodarczy and sytuacja ekonomiczna are the natural collocations; ekonomiczny wpływ reads as a translation from English.
  • Forgetting that the summary is capped. A long summary is marked only until the first natural break between 90 and 100 words, so a conclusion placed at word 130 is a conclusion nobody reads.
  • Naming a currency other than the złoty. Polish prices are given in zł, and a foreign currency sign in a Polish answer is simply an error.

Active revision

Napisz po polsku dwa akapity o wpływie dużego festiwalu na małe miasto: pierwszy o korzyściach, drugi o kosztach. Nie wolno użyć ani jednej liczby. Zamiast tego opisz mechanizm - co dzieje się z bazą noclegową, transportem, zatrudnieniem sezonowym i budżetem gminy. Na koniec podkreśl każde zdanie, które dałoby się sprawdzić, i policz, ile ich jest. Jeśli mniej niż połowa, przepisz akapit.

Dziedzictwo regionalne i lokalne: regional and local heritage#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7687 section 3.2.1.1 Festivals and traditions - regional and local heritageLPAQA 7687 section 4.6.4 Paper 3 multi-skill task - a listening passage and a written source, approximately 200 words, requiring analysis, personal reaction and the drawing of a conclusion

Key points

This section serves the third bullet, regional and local heritage, and it should start by dismantling an assumption. Poland today is, by European standards, ethnically homogeneous, and a candidate who stops there writes a thin answer, because the country is regionally various in a way the national picture conceals. Podhale in the south has its own dialect, music, building style and dress. Kaszuby in the north has a language recognised as a regional language under the 2005 Act on national and ethnic minorities and on the regional language. Łowicz in central Poland is known for its striped costume, and Śląsk, Kurpie, Wielkopolska and Warmia each carry their own repertoire. The honest complication is that the map itself moved: after 1945 the borders shifted and populations were resettled, so across much of the west and north the local tradition is younger than the buildings it is performed among.
The formal frame for heritage is the UNESCO Convention of 2003 and its Reprezentatywna lista niematerialnego dziedzictwa kulturowego ludzkości, the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, alongside Poland's own national inventory. Two Polish entries belong squarely in this sub-theme. Szopkarstwo krakowskie, the making of the Kraków nativity cribs, was Poland's first inscription on the Representative List, in 2018; the tradition of laying flower carpets for Corpus Christi processions followed in 2021, and Spycimierz is its best-known village. Notice what an inscription actually is, because the distinction is examinable: what is listed is a practice and the community that carries it, not a building and not a town. Notice too what it does - it brings recognition, visitors, workshops and funding, and with them an expectation of continuing.
Local occasions are what make an answer concrete, and each of these can be placed and dated. Lajkonik is a Kraków procession led by a costumed rider, held w oktawę Bożego Ciała, in the week that follows Corpus Christi. Wianki falls at midsummer and has grown, in Kraków, into a large civic event on the Vistula. Lipnica Murowana holds its palm competition on Niedziela Palmowa, Palm Sunday, and its palms are famously the tallest in Poland. The Corpus Christi procession in Łowicz is walked in the striped pasiaki of the local costume. Zakopane has hosted an international festival of mountain folklore for decades. Say these in Polish with the right adjectives: charakterystyczny dla regionu, characteristic of the region; obchodzony wyłącznie w …, observed only in …; kultywowany przez miejscowe rodziny, kept up by local families; zachował się na Podhalu, survived in Podhale.
Finally, the words you choose to classify a custom are already an argument, so choose them consciously. Regionalny points to a cultural region, lokalny to a single place, ludowy to folk culture as a category, and folklorystyczny, as in zespół folklorystyczny, carries an audible suggestion of performance for an audience. Four oppositions do most of the analytical work in this bullet, and each of them is a ready-made essay: żywa tradycja against skansen, a living tradition against an open-air museum; obrzęd against widowisko, rite against spectacle; uczestnik against widz, participant against spectator; and mieszkaniec against turysta. None of the four is a simple good-against-bad pair, and saying why not - a rite with spectators is still a rite, and tourist money sometimes pays for the costumes - is precisely the evaluation the highest AO4 band describes.
Worked example

The Paper 3 multi-skill task, planned and drafted

This is a specimen multi-skill task of the kind Paper 3 sets; both sources are written here for practice and are not taken from a broadcast or a publication. The heard source is a radio interview with a woman from a village known for its Corpus Christi flower carpets: she has been laying them since childhood, learnt the patterns from her grandmother, and says that fewer families now have the hours the work takes. The written source reports that after the tradition was inscribed by UNESCO the village became known, visitors arrived, and money appeared for workshops and promotion. The question is: Czy wpisanie tradycji na listę UNESCO pomaga ją zachować? Odpowiedz, odwołując się do obu źródeł. Approximately 200 words, marked AO1 out of 10, AO2 out of 10 and AO3 out of 10.

  1. 01Read what the task demands, and budget the two hundred words

The specification says the response requires reference to the information in both sources, and that it requires analysis, personal reaction and the drawing of a conclusion. That is four obligations in roughly two hundred words, so budget them before you write: about forty words to each source, about eighty to the analysis and the personal reaction taken together, and about forty to the conclusion. Note that the mark split is AO1, AO2 and AO3 - ten each. There is no AO4 mark here, which means the reward is for accurate use of both sources in accurate Polish, not for cultural evaluation as such.

  2. 02Take notes in two columns and mark where the sources part company

One column per source, in Polish, abbreviated. The heard source gives you: praca wielogodzinna, nauczyła się od babki, coraz mniej rodzin ma czas. The written source gives you: wpis UNESCO, rozgłos, turyści, pieniądze na warsztaty. Then look for the seam. Both sources agree the custom has survived; they disagree, implicitly, about what has kept it alive - transmission within families, or external recognition and funding. That disagreement is the essay. A response that summarises each source in turn and stops has done the listening and the reading but not the task.

  3. 03Build the frame sentences that attach each claim to its source

The examiner must be able to see which information came from where, so use explicit attribution and vary it. Z nagrania wynika, że … . Rozmówczyni podkreśla, że … . Tekst pisany zwraca uwagę na coś innego: … . Autor zauważa, że … . Then the sentence that holds them together, which is where the AO2 and AO1 marks meet: Oba źródła zgadzają się co do tego, że …, różnią się jednak co do przyczyn. That single construction does more work than any other in this task, and it is worth memorising exactly, including the genitive after co do.

  4. 04Make the personal reaction an argument rather than an opinion

Moim zdaniem must be followed by a reason, or it contributes nothing. Compare two openings. Moim zdaniem tradycje są bardzo ważne - unarguable, unevidenced, and worth no marks in any grid. Moim zdaniem wpis chroni przede wszystkim formę obrzędu, natomiast nie rozwiązuje problemu, o którym mówi rozmówczyni - a position, tied to something a source actually said, and one an examiner can follow. Note the grammar: rozwiązywać takes an accusative object, but under negation it takes the genitive, hence nie rozwiązuje problemu.

  5. 05Draw a conclusion that goes beyond what you have already written

A conclusion which restates the two sources is not a conclusion. The move is to say what follows from the tension you identified: Na tej podstawie można powiedzieć, że lista UNESCO jest narzędziem skutecznym, ale niewystarczającym. Then say why in one clause. Finally, run the AO3 check in a fixed order - case after every preposition, aspect on every verb, agreement on every adjective, and the diacritics last. Ten of the thirty marks here are language, so a check that recovers two errors is worth as much as an extra idea.

Exam focus

  • Name a specific occasion with its place and its date - Lajkonik in the octave of Corpus Christi, the Lipnica Murowana palms on Palm Sunday - because specificity is what the grid means by relevant information (AO4).
  • Say precisely what UNESCO inscribed: a practice and the community that carries it, never a town or a building (AO4).
  • Choose between regionalny, lokalny, ludowy and folklorystyczny deliberately, since the adjective already commits you to an argument (AO3).
  • In the multi-skill task, refer to both sources explicitly and mark the point where they disagree, because that disagreement is the analysis the task is asking for (AO1 and AO2).

Typical mistakes

  • Treating folklor as a neutral word. In Polish it can imply performance for an audience, which may be exactly the distinction you want - but make it on purpose.
  • Assuming every old local custom is old in the place where it is performed. Post-1945 border changes and resettlement mean much local tradition in the west and north is younger than its setting.
  • Writing that UNESCO recognised a town. The listed element is a practice, such as szopkarstwo krakowskie or the flower-carpet tradition, together with the community that maintains it.
  • Using region for everything. Poland has województwa, which are administrative, regiony such as Podhale and Kaszuby, which are cultural, and gminy, which are municipal - and choosing correctly signals real knowledge.
  • Confusing góralski, highlander, with górski, mountain. Kultura góralska is the people; krajobraz górski is the scenery.

Active revision

Exam technique: drabina AO4, from description to a justified claim#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7687 section 4.7.1 Paper 1 Research project AO4 - students consistently select relevant information to support their arguments and use appropriate evidence to justify their conclusionsLPAQA 7687 section 4.7.2 Paper 2 AO4 - opinions, views and conclusions are consistently supported by relevant and appropriate evidence from the text or film

Key points

Start with where AO4 actually lives, because being honest about it saves wasted effort. AO4 is twenty per cent of the qualification and it is assessed in exactly two places: the Paper 1 research-project essay, marked AO2 out of ten, AO3 out of ten and AO4 out of twenty, and each of the two Paper 2 essays on the works, marked AO3 out of twenty and AO4 out of twenty. Paper 3's multi-skill task carries AO1, AO2 and AO3 only; it demands analysis, personal reaction and a conclusion, but no AO4 mark is available for them. So festivals knowledge earns AO4 marks directly in two situations - as the cultural and social context of a work in Paper 2, which the grid names explicitly, and in the research-project essay if the chosen topic is Tourism in Poland, whose bullets include popular tourist sites and regional gastronomy. Everywhere else it is comprehension and translation material.
Next, read the two AO4 grids as instructions rather than as descriptions. The Paper 1 grid asks that students consistently select relevant information to support their arguments and consistently use appropriate evidence to justify their conclusions. The Paper 2 grid asks that opinions, views and conclusions are consistently supported by relevant and appropriate evidence from the text or film. Both say the same thing twice: a claim without located evidence is not an AO4 claim at all. And notice how the bands descend - consistently, usually, sometimes, occasionally, rarely. The distinction between the top two bands is frequency, not brilliance, which means the way up is not one dazzling paragraph but the same three-step move repeated in every paragraph you write.
The ladder has five rungs and the AO4 marks begin at the fourth. Rung one is nazwanie: naming the custom precisely, Lajkonik rather than a procession in Kraków. Rung two is opis: describing what happens. Rung three is wyjaśnienie: explaining why it takes that form, which is where knowledge starts to show. Rung four is teza: a claim that could be false. Rung five is uzasadnienie: evidence located precisely enough that somebody else could check it, plus a statement of what it does and does not license. The test for rung four is a single question - could a well-informed person disagree? Wigilia jest ważnym świętem fails it, because nobody would dispute that. Wigilia przetrwała sekularyzację lepiej niż niedzielna msza, bo jest świętem rodziny, a nie tylko Kościoła passes it, because it can be argued against.
Then the three-step shape and its Polish: teza, then dowód umiejscowiony, then wniosek. Learn the frames until they cost no thought. Twierdzę, że … . Świadczy o tym … . Przykładem jest … . Wynika z tego, że … . Nie znaczy to jednak, że … . Ostrożniej byłoby powiedzieć, że … . The hardest discipline is the third step, saying what the evidence licenses. A UNESCO inscription is evidence of recognition, funding and visibility; it is not evidence that anybody believes anything. A full hotel is evidence of visitors; it is not evidence that a tradition is healthy. Overclaiming is the commonest way a well-informed paragraph loses AO4 marks, and it is also where refusing to invent statistics pays off, because a described mechanism can be examined and a half-remembered percentage cannot.
Worked example

The Paper 1 research-project answer: an unseen question on an unseen source

Paper 1's third section gives you an unseen Polish source on your published research topic and an unseen question on it, for forty marks and approximately three hundred words. The research topic here is 3.5.3, Tourism in Poland, whose bullets are the development of a tourist infrastructure, popular tourist sites and places of interest, and regional gastronomy. The specimen source, written for practice, describes a small town that has built a calendar of festivals across the year and now promotes itself through them. The question is: Czy tradycje regionalne są dziś przede wszystkim atrakcją turystyczną? Odpowiedz, korzystając z tekstu i wyników własnych badań.

  1. 01Decode the question, and notice that it asks about degree

Przede wszystkim means above all, and it turns a yes-or-no question into a question of proportion. An answer arguing that regional traditions are entirely a tourist attraction, or entirely not, has answered a simpler question than the one set and will read as crude. The strongest answers argue about where the line falls and under what conditions it moves. Write the question's key phrase at the top of your plan and check every paragraph against it, because the grid's first line in every band is critical and analytical response to the question set - relevance to the question is assessed before anything else.

  2. 02Separate the source's information from your own research, then join them

The specification says the response must use information from the source linked to the knowledge gained from your individual research. Linked is the operative word: two paragraphs sitting side by side, one summarising the source and one reciting your findings, do not meet it. Plan instead for a paragraph in which they meet - the source supplies the case, your research supplies the comparison or the counter-example. Mark them in the writing so the examiner can see both: w tekście czytamy, że … for the source, and z moich badań wynika, że … or podobnie jest w przypadku … for your own.

  3. 03Draft the claim, then try to break it

Write your rung-four claim as a single sentence and then attack it. If you cannot think of an informed objection, it is not a claim. Take Tradycje regionalne przyciągają turystów: nobody disagrees, so it earns nothing. Now take Tradycje regionalne są dziś jednocześnie atrakcją turystyczną i żywym obrzędem, a granica biegnie inaczej w każdej miejscowości. That is contestable - somebody could argue the commercial function has displaced the ritual one everywhere - and being contestable is exactly what makes it worth defending with evidence.

  4. 04Attach the evidence and refuse the overclaim

Choose evidence that is located rather than general. Szopkarstwo krakowskie is good evidence here because it can be placed and dated: the competition is held annually in Kraków on the first Thursday of December, the cribs are afterwards exhibited and reproduced, and the makers are local families, often across generations. That evidence licenses a claim about the coexistence of display and practice. It does not license a claim about how many people take part, or about what they believe, and writing either would be the overclaim that costs marks. Say so explicitly: nie dowodzi jednak, że zmienił się powód, dla którego ludzie ją uprawiają.

  5. 05Write the concession paragraph, because the band descriptor says consistently

One evidenced claim reaches the middle bands; an essay that does it in every paragraph reaches the top. The most economical way to demonstrate evaluation rather than assertion is a paragraph beginning nie znaczy to jednak, że … in which you set out the strongest case against your own position - for instance that in some towns the calendar of events was assembled for visitors and has no local continuity at all - and then say why your claim survives it. That paragraph is not a weakening of your argument; it is the evaluation of the topic the grid asks for.

  6. 06Close on the degree question, and check the language separately

The conclusion must answer przede wszystkim, which means it must contain a comparison rather than a verdict. Then run AO3 as its own pass: ten of the forty marks are language, and the essay's argument frames are exactly where errors concentrate - świadczyć o takes the locative, dowodzić takes the genitive, wynikać takes z with the genitive, and decydować takes o with the locative. Check those four, then the aspect of every verb, then the diacritics, in that order, and stop when the time you allotted runs out.

Exam focus

  • Test every claim by asking whether a well-informed person could disagree with it; if they could not, it is a statement of the obvious and earns nothing (AO4).
  • Attach evidence you could locate for somebody else, then state what it licenses - the third step is the one candidates omit, and it is where justify their conclusions is satisfied (AO4).
  • Know where AO4 is actually assessed: the Paper 1 research-project essay and each Paper 2 essay, and nowhere else in the qualification (AO4).
  • Keep the argument frames accurate as Polish, since AO3 is marked by a separate grid in both essays and an ungrammatical claim loses twice (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Describing where the grid asks for evaluation. The bands move on how consistently evidence supports conclusions, not on how much has been described.
  • Assuming AO4 marks are available in Paper 3. The multi-skill task is AO1 plus AO2 plus AO3; it demands analysis and a conclusion but carries no AO4 mark.
  • Overclaiming from the evidence. An inscription evidences recognition and funding, not belief; a full hotel evidences visitors, not the health of a custom.
  • Making the claim unfalsifiable. Tradycje są ważne dla tożsamości narodowej cannot be argued against, so it cannot be supported either, and it earns nothing.
  • Producing one strong analytical paragraph and three descriptive ones. The top band says consistently, and an essay is marked as a whole.
