Recording and technology-based composition

The two non-exam assessments put the whole subject into practice. Component 1 (Recording) is a multitrack recording of a song chosen from a Pearson-set list; Component 2 (Technology-based composition) is an original composition built from synthesis, sampling and audio manipulation to a released brief. Because the set songs and briefs rotate, this topic teaches the method - planning, tracking, editing, mixing a multitrack, and composing and producing a technology-based piece - rather than any particular song or brief.

Key points

Component 1 is a multitrack recording of one song chosen from a list of songs set and released by Pearson. The candidate captures, edits, processes and mixes the chosen song into a stereo mixdown, and the work is assessed on the quality of the recording and production - the capture, the balance, the use of processing and effects, and the overall technical control - rather than on the performance alone. Because the set song list is rotated across specification cycles, you should learn the method of making a multitrack recording, which applies to whatever songs are set, rather than memorising a particular song.
Planning is the first and most decisive stage. Listen closely to the reference of the chosen song to understand its arrangement, instrumentation, structure and production, and decide how you will realise each part - which instruments and performers you have, what you will record live and what you might program, and the order in which you will build the recording (often the rhythm section first, then harmony, then lead and detail). Good planning prevents most problems later.
A key planning document is the input list (track sheet): every source to be recorded, the microphone or DI to be used on each, the input it goes to, and any notes on level or treatment. Planning the input list forces you to think through microphone choices (type and pattern), the signal chain, and how many inputs you need at once, and it is the blueprint the tracking session follows. It draws directly on the microphones, techniques and signal-chain topics.
Planning also covers the practicalities that make a session run: booking the space and performers, preparing a click/guide where needed, setting up a headphone (cue) mix so performers can hear themselves and the backing, and organising the session file with named, colour-coded tracks. A well-prepared session lets you concentrate on capturing good takes rather than solving avoidable problems, which is exactly what the assessment rewards.
For the exam and the NEA, be able to describe the Component 1 task (a multitrack recording of a set song, assessed on recording and production quality) and the planning method - studying the reference, deciding the arrangement and recording order, preparing an input list of sources, microphones and signal chains, and organising the session - while understanding that the specific songs rotate, so the transferable skill is the planning method itself.

Planning an input list

You will record a four-piece band (drums, bass, electric guitar, lead vocal) for Component 1. Outline the input-list decisions.

    A condenser with a pop shield and a cardioid pattern for isolation, recorded after the backing is down; plan a high-pass and gain structure.

Key points

Tracking is the recording session itself: capturing each planned part cleanly to its own track. It applies the capture skills of the earlier topics - microphone choice and placement, polar patterns, the signal chain, gain structure and headroom - to get the best possible source recordings, because everything downstream depends on the quality of what is captured. A clean, well-recorded track needs little repair; a poorly captured one limits the whole mix.
The order of tracking usually builds from the rhythmic foundation upward. The drums (and often bass) are recorded first, frequently to a click, so there is a solid, in-time backbone; then the harmony parts (rhythm guitar, keys), then the lead vocal and any solos, and finally overdubs and detail. Recording to a click or guide keeps everything in time and makes later editing and any programming straightforward, though some styles are tracked without one to preserve feel.
Monitoring during tracking is crucial. Performers need a headphone (cue) mix so they can hear themselves and the parts already recorded, and it must be comfortable and in time (low latency, via direct/hardware monitoring where needed). A good cue mix helps a performer give a good take; a bad one causes timing and tuning problems. Closed-back headphones are used so the cue does not spill into the microphones.
Gain structure and takes are set at the point of capture. For each source, set the pre-amp gain during the loudest passage for headroom (peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS), engage pads and high-pass filters as needed, and record several takes so the best can be comped later. Watch for problems that cannot be fixed afterwards - distortion from overload, spill, phase issues on multi-miked sources - and solve them at source rather than hoping to repair them in the mix.
For the exam and the NEA, be able to describe tracking: capturing planned parts cleanly with good microphone technique and gain structure, building up from the rhythm section (often to a click), providing a good low-latency cue mix, and recording multiple takes while catching at-source problems. Tracking is where the recording quality is won or lost, so it draws together the whole first half of the subject.
Worked example

A tracking order and cue mix

Describe how you would track a four-piece band, including the recording order and the monitoring, and justify the choices.

    Record drums (and bass) first to a click, so there is a solid, in-time backbone for everything to lock to.

    Overdub the harmony parts (rhythm guitar, keys), then the lead vocal and solos, then detail, each performer hearing the parts already recorded.

    Give each performer a comfortable, low-latency headphone mix of themselves and the backing (with the click), using closed-back headphones so it does not spill into the microphones.

  4. 04Gain and takes

    Set gain for headroom during the loudest passages, record several takes for comping, and fix any overload, spill or phase problems at source.

Result: Track from the rhythm section up, to a click, with a good low-latency closed-back cue mix and clean gain structure - the method that captures good, comp-able takes.

Key points

Once the parts are tracked, they are edited and then mixed, applying the editing, correction, dynamics, EQ, effects and mixing topics to turn raw takes into a finished production. Editing comes first: comping the best takes into seamless performances, tightening timing and tuning transparently, cleaning up noises and edit points, and organising the session. The aim is a clean, well-performed set of tracks that the mix can be built on.
The mix then combines the edited tracks into a balanced stereo production. Following the mixing topic, it works through the four dimensions: setting the level balance (the most important move), carving frequency space with EQ so parts do not mask one another, panning for width and separation, and using reverb and delay for depth - all while controlling dynamics so each part sits steadily. The mix should serve the song, matching the character and clarity of the reference.
Processing is applied purposefully. Corrective moves fix problems transparently - a high-pass to remove rumble, a compressor to even a vocal, a notch to remove a resonance, de-essing for sibilance; creative moves shape the sound - saturation for warmth, a reverb to place the vocal, a delay for interest. Because the assessment rewards controlled, appropriate production, each move should solve a heard problem or serve the song, not be applied by rote, and the whole should sound balanced and finished.
The recording is completed by a mixdown: bouncing the finished mix to a stereo file at the required specification, checking it on several systems and in mono, and referencing it against professional tracks. A light mastering-style polish may be applied, but the emphasis is on a clean, balanced, well-produced mix. The final submission is this stereo mixdown, which is what is externally marked.
For the exam and the NEA, be able to describe editing (comping, transparent tuning and timing, cleanup) and mixing (balance, EQ, panning, depth, dynamics and effects, serving the song) of a multitrack recording, and the mixdown and checking that finish it. This section is where the second half of the subject - editing, correction, dynamics, EQ, effects and mixing - is brought to bear on the recording.

A mixing priority order

Outline the order in which you would mix the tracked band recording and the main tool at each stage.

Key points

Component 2 is an original technology-based composition responding to one of a set of released briefs. What makes it 'technology-based' is that the composition is built from and defined by the tools of music technology - synthesis, sampling, audio manipulation, MIDI sequencing and effects - so that the sound design and production are themselves the compositional material, not just a way of presenting notes. Because the briefs rotate, the transferable skill is the method of composing and producing to a brief, not a particular brief.
Responding to a brief begins with reading it carefully and identifying its requirements and freedoms - a style, a mood, a required technique or element, a duration - and then generating musical ideas that satisfy them. A composition typically grows from a core idea (a riff, a chord loop, a synth patch, a sampled hook, a groove) that is developed and varied, and the brief's constraints are treated as a helpful focus rather than a limitation.
The technology is the medium of composition. Synthesis creates original sounds and their evolution; sampling turns recorded material into hooks, textures and rhythms; MIDI sequences the parts and shapes their expression; audio manipulation (pitch, time, reversal, resampling) transforms material; and effects place and colour everything. Strong technology-based composition uses these not decoratively but structurally - a filter sweep building a section, a sampled phrase becoming a hook, a synth patch defining the piece's identity.
Structure and arrangement give the piece shape over time. Even a technology-based composition needs a sense of development and form: an introduction that establishes the material, sections that contrast and build, changes in texture and arrangement (adding and removing layers), and a satisfying close. The production techniques - automation, filtering, effects, dynamics - are used to create this movement and drama, so structure and production work together.
For the exam and the NEA, be able to describe the Component 2 task (an original technology-based composition to a released brief, built from synthesis, sampling, manipulation, MIDI and effects), the method of responding to a brief (identify requirements, generate and develop a core idea), and how the technology is used structurally to create sound design, development and form. Starting a composition from a brief

A released brief asks for an electronic piece establishing a tense, cinematic mood. Describe how you would begin and develop it using the technology.

Both non-exam assessments culminate in a produced, submitted piece, and their quality depends on combining the whole toolkit of the subject with control and purpose. The Component 1 recording draws on capture, editing, correction, dynamics, EQ, effects and mixing; the Component 2 composition draws on synthesis, sampling, MIDI, manipulation, effects and mixing. In both, the techniques are means to a musical end, and the mark reflects how skilfully and appropriately they are combined, not how many are used.
Producing the final piece means finishing it to a professional standard: a clean, balanced mix; purposeful, controlled processing; a clear structure and arrangement; and a checked stereo mixdown at the required specification. Referencing professional work in the same style, checking on several playback systems and in mono, and stepping back to judge the whole rather than the details are what raise a piece from competent to accomplished.
Good practice underpins the whole process: organising the session with named, colour-coded tracks and buses; keeping backups; documenting the work where the assessment requires it; and working within the rules on the origin of any recorded or sampled material (own or properly cleared). A tidy, well-managed project is easier to mix and less likely to go wrong, and it reflects the professional discipline the qualification is building.
Submission requires meeting the specification's practical requirements exactly - the correct file format, sample rate and bit depth, duration and any accompanying documentation - and delivering a piece that represents your best controlled work. Because these are the two largest creative components of the qualification, they are where the whole subject is demonstrated, so the final produced pieces should show command of the techniques in service of music that satisfies the task.
For the exam and the NEA, be able to explain that both components combine the subject's full toolkit with control and purpose, describe producing and finishing to a professional standard (clean balanced mix, purposeful processing, structure, checked mixdown), and the good practice and submission requirements (organisation, backups, material clearance, correct deliverables). The overarching message is that technique serves the music, and control and appropriateness are what is rewarded.

Pre-submission checklist

List the final checks and deliverables before submitting an NEA piece, and explain why each matters.
