The two non-exam assessments put the whole subject into practice. Component 1 (Recording) is a multitrack recording of a song chosen from a Pearson-set list; Component 2 (Technology-based composition) is an original composition built from synthesis, sampling and audio manipulation to a released brief. Because the set songs and briefs rotate, this topic teaches the method - planning, tracking, editing, mixing a multitrack, and composing and producing a technology-based piece - rather than any particular song or brief.

The multitrack recording workflow
You will record a four-piece band (drums, bass, electric guitar, lead vocal) for Component 1. Outline the input-list decisions.
Close mics (dynamic on kick and snare, condensers as overheads), plan the setup with the 3:1 rule and matched overhead distances to avoid phase problems; several inputs at once.
Take a DI for a clean, direct signal (and optionally a mic on the amp); the DI gives a reliable, editable low end.
A dynamic microphone on the amp cabinet, positioned for the wanted tone (cone edge/centre, on/off axis).
A condenser with a pop shield and a cardioid pattern for isolation, recorded after the backing is down; plan a high-pass and gain structure.
Result: An input list pairing each source with a considered microphone/DI, pattern and signal-chain choice - the blueprint the tracking session follows.

A tracking session signal flow
Describe how you would track a four-piece band, including the recording order and the monitoring, and justify the choices.
Record drums (and bass) first to a click, so there is a solid, in-time backbone for everything to lock to.
Overdub the harmony parts (rhythm guitar, keys), then the lead vocal and solos, then detail, each performer hearing the parts already recorded.
Give each performer a comfortable, low-latency headphone mix of themselves and the backing (with the click), using closed-back headphones so it does not spill into the microphones.
Set gain for headroom during the loudest passages, record several takes for comping, and fix any overload, spill or phase problems at source.
Result: Track from the rhythm section up, to a click, with a good low-latency closed-back cue mix and clean gain structure - the method that captures good, comp-able takes.

Mixing the recording
Outline the order in which you would mix the tracked band recording and the main tool at each stage.
Set the level balance with the faders from a reference element (the vocal), establishing the hierarchy before any processing.
High-pass and EQ to carve complementary space and remove problems, compress to steady the levels of vocals and rhythm section.
Pan for width (anchors centred), then add reverb and delay on sends for depth, keeping the mix mono-compatible.
Automate to hold the balance, then bounce the stereo mixdown and check it in mono, on several systems, and against a reference track.

The technology-based composition process
A released brief asks for an electronic piece establishing a tense, cinematic mood. Describe how you would begin and develop it using the technology.
Identify the requirements - electronic, tense, cinematic, and any duration or technique specified - which focus the sound-world and mood.
Design a defining element - a dark, evolving synth pad, a tense arpeggio, or a manipulated sampled texture - that establishes the mood and can be developed.
Use synthesis for the evolving sounds, sampling for cinematic textures and hits, MIDI to sequence and shape the parts, and manipulation to transform material into new elements.
Arrange an introduction, a build and a release, using automation, filtering, dynamics and effects to create the tension and cinematic movement, then mix and refine.
Result: Read the brief for its requirements, design a mood-defining core idea, build and develop it with synthesis, sampling, MIDI and manipulation, and structure and produce the tension - the technology as the compositional medium.

The production toolkit for the NEAs
List the final checks and deliverables before submitting an NEA piece, and explain why each matters.
Check the mixdown in mono and on several systems and against a reference, so balance and phase problems are caught before submission.
Bounce the stereo file at the required sample rate, bit depth and format (dithering if reducing bit depth), so the deliverable meets the specification.
Complete any required logs or annotations honestly and check the material's origin/clearance, meeting the assessment's requirements.
Keep a backup of the project and the bounce, with the session organised, so the work is safe and the submission is complete.
Result: Check the mix, meet the technical specification, complete the documentation and clearance, and back up - the disciplined finish that a good submission needs.
