મુખ્ય વિષય ૨, પેટા-વિષય ૧: માધ્યમ — the internet, reliability and the press

This topic is the first sub-theme of Theme 2 of Pearson Edexcel 9GU0: માધ્યમ, the media, with its three aspects — the effect of the internet on young people's lives, the reliability of information found on the internet, and the effect of newspapers on politics. It occupies the artistic-culture-1 slot, and the slot name needs a caveat stated at once: the specification says explicitly that Theme 2 covers political culture through the media, artistic culture through festivals and traditions, and political and intellectual culture through its research subject. So this topic is the POLITICAL half of an artistic-culture slot, and treating it as a topic about entertainment will produce answers that miss what is being marked. Theme 2 is also the only theme whose scope reaches beyond the Gujarat state, to other areas of India where Gujarati is spoken.

basic level

In the first year, read one Gujarati newspaper every day, on paper or online, and read it as a language learner rather than as a news consumer: collect the verbs of saying, the attribution phrases and the headline grammar, which is compressed and unlike anything else you will meet. Learn the mastheads by name, and learn to tell a news report from an editorial at a glance.

higher level

The full A-Level wants an argument about influence, and influence is hard to demonstrate. Learn to distinguish three claims that sound alike — that a medium reaches people, that it changes what they believe, and that it changes what they do — and to say which of the three your evidence actually supports. That single distinction lifts a media answer out of assertion and into the top bands of the AO4 grid.

Theme 2's wider scope, and why the media sub-theme is political#

●○○FoundationLPPearson Edexcel 9GU0 — Themes, sub-themes and research subjects — મુખ્ય વિષય ૨: માધ્યમ અને સંસ્કૃતિ

Key points

Theme 2 is titled મુખ્ય વિષય ૨: માધ્યમ અને સંસ્કૃતિ — media and culture. Two facts about it are different from every other theme and both change how you prepare. First, its scope is wider: the specification sets it in the context of the Gujarat state AND other areas of India where Gujarati is spoken, and if you take your research subject from this theme you may draw on both. Second, the specification tells you exactly what kinds of culture it covers, and the list is not what the platform's slot name suggests: political culture through the media, artistic culture through festivals and traditions, and political and intellectual culture through the research subject. The media sub-theme in front of you is therefore the political one.
The wider scope is a genuine opportunity and it is worth knowing what it lets in. Gujarati is the principal language of the Gujarat state, and it is also spoken by very large populations elsewhere in India — most obviously in Mumbai, and in the union territories of Daman and Diu and of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. That matters immediately for media, because the oldest continuously published Gujarati newspaper is published not in Gujarat but in Mumbai: Mumbai Samachar, founded in 1822 by Fardunjee Marzban, is among the oldest surviving newspapers in Asia. A candidate who has internalised the Gujarat-only rule from Themes 1, 3 and 4 may wrongly rule that example out. Under Theme 2 it is squarely admissible. What remains inadmissible everywhere is the diaspora outside India: the guidance to teachers says students must focus their independent research on Gujarati-speaking areas of India only.
The three aspects of this sub-theme are યુવાનોનાં જીવન પર ઇન્ટરનેટની અસર (the effect of the internet on young people's lives), ઇન્ટરનેટ પર મળતી માહિતીની આધારભૂતતા (the reliability of information found on the internet), and વર્તમાનપત્રોની રાજકારણ પર અસર (the effect of newspapers on politics). Two of the three are explicitly about effect, અસર, and one is about આધારભૂતતા, reliability or well-foundedness — a fine abstract noun built from આધાર, a basis or support. Notice that the third aspect names રાજકારણ, politics, directly. Any doubt about whether this sub-theme is political is settled by its own third line.
The vocabulary set is large but very learnable because most of it is transparent. માધ્યમ is a medium and પ્રસારમાધ્યમો are the mass media; વર્તમાનપત્ર and અખબાર both mean newspaper; સમાચાર is news; પત્રકાર a journalist and પત્રકારત્વ journalism; તંત્રી an editor and તંત્રીલેખ an editorial; અહેવાલ a report and લેખ an article; સ્રોત a source; પુરાવો evidence; ચકાસણી verification; અફવા a rumour; ખોટા સમાચાર false news; સામાજિક માધ્યમો social media; લોકમત public opinion; જાહેરાત an advertisement. Learn them as a field, because a Section B media text will use six of them in a paragraph and a Section A translation will expect you to render them precisely.
Worked example

Paper 3 Section A: a question on a source taken from online media

The specification says Paper 3 Section A sources will include material from online media. You hear a short online news bulletin in Gujarati in which a presenter introduces a story and a reporter then speaks from a location. A question asks: અહેવાલ આપનાર પત્રકાર કઈ બાબતમાં ખાતરી આપી શકતા નથી? Answer it.

  1. 01Read what the question is fishing for

ખાતરી આપવી is to give an assurance or to confirm; ખાતરી આપી શકતા નથી is cannot confirm. The question is therefore about a hedge, not about a fact. Broadcast Gujarati hedges in recognisable ways and you can listen for them specifically: હજી સુધી પુષ્ટિ થઈ નથી (it has not yet been confirmed), એવું કહેવાય છે કે (it is said that), સૂત્રોના જણાવ્યા મુજબ (according to sources), પ્રાથમિક માહિતી પ્રમાણે (according to preliminary information).

  2. 02Use the replay provision to hunt the hedge, not the story

You control the recording. Play it once for shape — presenter, then reporter, then perhaps a return to the studio. Then replay only the reporter's section listening for the four hedge phrases above and nothing else. This is a different activity from listening for content and it is far faster once you know you are doing it.

  3. 03Distinguish the hedge from the correction

A common Section A distractor is a fact that the reporter states plainly and then qualifies later. If the reporter says a number and then says આ આંકડો સત્તાવાર નથી (this figure is not official), the unconfirmed thing is the figure, not the event. Attach the hedge to what it actually modifies before you write.

  4. 04Write the answer in your own Gujarati, briefly

પત્રકાર જણાવે છે કે નુકસાનનો ચોક્કસ આંકડો હજી સત્તાવાર રીતે પુષ્ટિ પામ્યો નથી. The reporter says that the exact figure for the damage has not yet been officially confirmed. Section A open responses are marked on content: give the information asked for and no more. Padding a short answer with restatement wastes the time you need for Section B.

Result: The transferable skill is listening for a class of phrase rather than for content. Four hedge formulae, memorised, convert an apparently hard comprehension question into a search task that the replay provision makes easy.

Exam focus

  • Say the scope rule out loud when you start any Theme 2 work: this theme admits Gujarati-speaking areas of India beyond the Gujarat state, and no theme admits the diaspora outside India.
  • The specification's own description assigns political culture to the media sub-theme. Frame your answers accordingly, whatever the platform slot is called.
  • The third aspect names politics explicitly, so an answer to it must contain political content — elections, government, public opinion — not just a description of newspapers.
  • Two of three aspects ask about અસર, effect. An effect claim needs a mechanism, not an adjective.

Typical mistakes

  • Applying the Gujarat-only rule to Theme 2. It is the one theme where a Mumbai example is admissible.
  • Treating this sub-theme as entertainment because the platform slot is called artistic culture. The specification assigns entertainment and the arts to the OTHER Theme 2 sub-theme.
  • Confusing માધ્યમ, a medium, with માધ્યમિક, secondary as in secondary school. They look alike and mean nothing like each other.
  • Writing about the internet without ever naming a Gujarati-language source. The evidence for a Gujarati qualification should be in Gujarati; the specification requires research sources to be.

યુવાનોનાં જીવન પર ઇન્ટરનેટની અસર#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9GU0 — Theme 2, sub-theme માધ્યમ — aspect: the effect of the internet on young people's lives

Key points

The first aspect asks about અસર, effect, and effect claims are the hardest kind to make well. The discipline that earns marks is to separate three propositions that sound identical in casual speech. That a medium reaches young people is a claim about access; that it changes what they believe is a claim about attitudes; that it changes what they do is a claim about behaviour. They need different evidence and they are not equally easy to support. Deciding which of the three your paragraph is arguing, and saying so, is the single most effective way to move a media answer out of assertion.
The domains where the effect is most describable are worth naming in Gujarati so you can write about them fluently. શિક્ષણ (education) — online lectures, examination results published online, coaching material. રોજગારી (employment) — job listings, applications, freelance work, and the fact that many state and central government processes are now online-first. સંબંધો (relationships) — how people meet, and how a family in a village stays in contact with a son in Surat. મનોરંજન (entertainment) — music, film and short video. And માહિતી (information) itself, which is the bridge to the second aspect. A paragraph organised by domain is far stronger than one organised by good things and bad things.
Two Indian institutional facts give you dateable anchors rather than impressions. India's Information Technology Act was passed in 2000 and is the principal statute governing electronic records, digital signatures and offences committed by electronic means; the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules were made under it in 2021 and set out obligations for social media intermediaries and digital news publishers. The Government of India's Digital India programme dates from 2015. You can cite any of these flatly, with the date. What you cannot do is state how many young Gujaratis use a given platform: if you need the scale, name the publishing body — the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India publishes subscriber data, and the Registrar of Newspapers for India registers publications — and describe direction.
The register question here is worth attention, because internet Gujarati is not exam Gujarati. Online you will meet romanised Gujarati typed in Latin letters, heavy English borrowing, and abbreviations. None of that belongs in an examination answer, which must be in Gujarati script and in a neutral written register. But being able to read it is a research skill: much of the authentic Gujarati material on social media is written that way, and a research corpus that excludes it excludes a large part of what young people actually write. Read it; do not imitate it. The words you write should be ઇન્ટરનેટ, વેબસાઇટ, મોબાઇલ and સામાજિક માધ્યમો — loanwords in Gujarati script, which is entirely standard — not English words in Latin letters.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section B: telling fact, attributed claim and editorial opinion apart

A Section B text is a Gujarati newspaper feature on young people and the internet. One question asks: નીચેનામાંથી કયું વાક્ય લેખકનો પોતાનો અભિપ્રાય છે? Four sentences from the text are offered. Work out how to decide without guessing.

  1. 01Learn the three sentence types and their signals

    A Gujarati news text mixes three kinds of sentence and each announces itself. A plain fact has no attribution and no evaluative word: સરકારે ૨૦૨૧માં નવા નિયમો બનાવ્યા. An attributed claim carries a source phrase: સૂત્રોના જણાવ્યા મુજબ, અહેવાલ પ્રમાણે, નિષ્ણાતોના મતે, એક અભ્યાસ અનુસાર. The author's own opinion carries an evaluative word or a first-person frame: મારા મતે, ખરેખર, દુર્ભાગ્યે, એ સ્પષ્ટ છે કે, જોઈએ તેવું નથી.

  2. 02Apply the test to each option in turn

Option with પ્રમાણે or મુજબ: attributed, not the author's. Option with a bare date and a verb: fact, not the author's. Option containing જોઈએ (ought), દુર્ભાગ્યે (unfortunately), or a superlative such as સૌથી મોટો ભય (the greatest danger): that is evaluation, and unless it too is attributed it is the author's. The test takes seconds and is far more reliable than reading for tone.

  3. 03Watch the trap: attributed evaluation

The commonest distractor in this question type is an evaluative sentence that IS attributed — નિષ્ણાતોના મતે આ સૌથી મોટો ભય છે, in the experts' view this is the greatest danger. It is evaluative, so it feels like opinion, but the opinion belongs to the experts, not to the author. Attribution beats evaluation: if a source phrase is present, the sentence is not the author's own view.

  4. 04Carry the same test into your own writing

This is not only a reading skill. Every essay you write in this qualification is marked partly on whether the examiner can tell your claims from your sources', and the same three signals do the work. Use મુજબ or પ્રમાણે for a source, keep bare sentences for facts, and reserve મારા મતે for the judgements you are prepared to defend.

Result: Three sentence types, three signal sets, and one rule for the distractor: attribution beats evaluation. The same taxonomy that answers the question is the one that structures your own Section C essay.

Exam focus

  • Decide whether your claim is about access, belief or behaviour, and say which. The distinction is what makes the AO4 grid call an answer perceptive.
  • Organise by domain — education, work, relationships, entertainment, information — rather than by advantages and disadvantages.
  • Dated statutes and programmes are safe: the Information Technology Act 2000, the 2021 Rules, Digital India from 2015. Usage figures are not, unless attributed.
  • Write loanwords in Gujarati script. ઇન્ટરનેટ is correct; the Latin word inside a Gujarati sentence is a register error and, in a stored answer, a mixed-script weld.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing a balanced list of benefits and harms with no claim in it. The grid calls that straightforward and predictable, which is its phrase for the middle bands.
  • Asserting an effect on behaviour with evidence only of access. Everybody has a phone is not evidence that anybody changed their mind.
  • Importing British or American internet debate wholesale. The aspect is set in Gujarat and in Gujarati-speaking India, and the specifics differ.
  • Mixing Latin script into a Gujarati sentence. Use the Gujarati spelling of the loanword.

ઇન્ટરનેટ પર મળતી માહિતીની આધારભૂતતા#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9GU0 — Theme 2, sub-theme માધ્યમ — aspect: the reliability of information found on the internet

The four-question reliability test, in Gujarati

Testing a Gujarati online sourceTable with 3 columns and 4 rows, Data: Ask, in Gujarati · What it establishes · The failure it catches; કોણે પ્રગટ કર્યું? · Whether a masthead, an institution or nobody stands behind it · An anonymous page treated as a citable authority; ક્યારે? · Whether the date belongs to the claim or to the page · An old claim reread as current news; શેના પર આધારિત? · Whether a named study, official or document underlies it · A claim that rests only on the assertion itself; પુષ્ટિ મળે છે? · Whether an independent source reports it too · Two sites carrying one wire report, counted as two, highlighted cell: પુષ્ટિ મળે છે?ASK, IN GUJARATIWHAT IT ESTABLISHESTHE FAILURE IT CATCHESકોણે પ્રગટ કર્યું?Whether a masthead, aninstitution or nobody standsbehind itAn anonymous page treated asa citable authorityક્યારે?Whether the date belongs tothe claim or to the pageAn old claim reread ascurrent newsશેના પર આધારિત?Whether a named study, official or documentunderlies itA claim that rests only onthe assertion itselfપુષ્ટિ મળે છે?Whether an independentsource reports it tooTwo sites carrying one wirereport, counted as two
Fig. 1The same four questions serve two purposes: they answer the specification's reliability aspect, and they are the filter through which your Paper 1 Section C research corpus should pass. The row in heavier ink is the one candidates skip, and skipping it is how two sites repeating one wire report get mistaken for corroboration.

Key points

આધારભૂતતા (ādhārbhūttā) is reliability in the sense of being well-founded: આધાર is a basis, આધારભૂત is founded on a basis, and the abstract suffix -તા makes the noun. The aspect is therefore not about whether the internet contains untruths — it obviously does — but about how a reader establishes what a claim rests on. That framing matters because the specification requires you to gather research evidence independently from at least two authentic sources in Gujarati, and it explicitly names online written sources as authentic. This aspect is thus the one part of the thematic content that is also a piece of examination method: it teaches you how to build the corpus that Paper 1 Section C rests on.
A workable test has four questions and they can be asked in Gujarati as easily as in English. કોણે પ્રગટ કર્યું? Who published it — a masthead with an editor and an address, an institution, or an anonymous account? ક્યારે? When — is the page dated, and is the date the date of the claim or of a redesign? આ દાવો શેના પર આધારિત છે? What does the claim rest on — a named study, a named official, a document, or nothing? બીજે ક્યાંય પુષ્ટિ મળે છે? Is it corroborated anywhere else, ideally by a source that is not simply repeating the first one. A candidate who can run those four questions in Gujarati has both an answer to this aspect and a research method.
India has identifiable institutions in this area and naming them is better evidence than describing a mood. The Press Council of India is a statutory body established under the Press Council Act; its function is to preserve the freedom of the press and maintain and improve standards of newspapers and news agencies in India. The Registrar of Newspapers for India registers publications. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules of 2021 place obligations on digital news publishers and on social media intermediaries and provide a grievance mechanism. The Press Information Bureau operates a fact-check unit. Whether these arrangements strike the right balance between accountability and press freedom is genuinely and publicly argued in India, and an answer that names the argument, attributes each side and does not settle it in a clause is stronger than one that does.
The Gujarati vocabulary of doubt and verification is precise and worth owning. અફવા a rumour; ખોટા સમાચાર false news; ગેરમાર્ગે દોરવું to mislead; ચકાસણી verification and ચકાસવું to verify; પુષ્ટિ confirmation; ખંડન a refutation; સ્રોત a source; વિશ્વસનીય trustworthy and અવિશ્વસનીય untrustworthy; શંકા doubt; દાવો a claim and દાવો કરવો to claim; પુરાવો evidence. Two constructions carry the register: એવો દાવો કરવામાં આવે છે કે (it is claimed that), which is a passive that lets you report without endorsing, and તેની પુષ્ટિ થઈ નથી (it has not been confirmed). Both are exactly what a careful writer needs and both appear constantly in Gujarati journalism.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section A: translating a paragraph about doubtful information into English

Translate into English: સામાજિક માધ્યમો પર એવો દાવો કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો કે શહેરમાં પાણી પીવાલાયક નથી. પણ કોઈ સત્તાવાર સંસ્થાએ તેની પુષ્ટિ કરી નહોતી. પછીથી નગરપાલિકાએ ખંડન કર્યું, છતાં અફવા ફેલાતી રહી.

  1. 01Sentence one: an agentless passive and a complementiser

એવો દાવો કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો કે — a claim had been made that. કરવામાં આવવું is Gujarati's ordinary agentless passive, formed on the verbal noun plus આવવું, and it is exactly the construction English renders with the passive; do not supply an agent that the Gujarati withholds. હતો makes it pluperfect: had been made, not was made. પાણી પીવાલાયક નથી — the water is not fit to drink; પીવાલાયક is fit for drinking, built from the infinitive plus લાયક, worthy of.

  2. 02Sentence two: a negative pluperfect, and the word સત્તાવાર

કોઈ સત્તાવાર સંસ્થાએ તેની પુષ્ટિ કરી નહોતી — no official body had confirmed it. કોઈ with a negative gives no or none; સત્તાવાર is official, from સત્તા, authority; સંસ્થા is a body or institution and takes the ergative -એ because પુષ્ટિ કરી is a perfective transitive; નહોતી is the negative past copula agreeing with the feminine પુષ્ટિ. That agreement is a small thing that a marker will notice.

  3. 03Sentence three: a concessive that must survive the translation

પછીથી નગરપાલિકાએ ખંડન કર્યું — later the municipal corporation issued a denial; નગરપાલિકા is the municipality and again takes the ergative. છતાં અફવા ફેલાતી રહી — yet the rumour went on spreading. છતાં is the concessive yet or nevertheless; ફેલાવું is to spread and ફેલાતી રહી, with રહેવું as the auxiliary, gives went on spreading rather than simply spread. The whole point of the paragraph lives in that continuative aspect, so it must appear in the English.

  4. 04Assemble and check tense sequence

The paragraph moves pluperfect, pluperfect, then simple past with a continuative. English needs the same sequence for the argument to work: a claim had been made, no official body had confirmed it, later the corporation denied it, yet the rumour went on spreading. Flattening all four verbs into a simple past would leave the reader unable to see that the denial came after the claim and failed to stop it.

Result: A claim had been made on social media that the water in the city was not fit to drink. No official body had confirmed it. Later the municipal corporation issued a denial, yet the rumour went on spreading. The three teaching points are the agentless passive કરવામાં આવવું, the ergative on both perfective transitives, and the continuative ફેલાતી રહી.

Exam focus

  • This aspect doubles as method: the four-question test is how you assemble the two authentic Gujarati sources that Section C research requires.
  • Name the institutions — the Press Council of India, the Registrar of Newspapers for India, the 2021 Rules — rather than describing regulation in the abstract.
  • The regulation debate is live. Name it as a debate, attribute both sides, do not resolve it.
  • એવો દાવો કરવામાં આવે છે કે is the construction that lets you report a claim without asserting it. It is worth a great deal in every essay in this qualification.

Typical mistakes

  • Answering as though the aspect were about fake news alone. It is about how a reader establishes what a claim rests on, which is a wider and more interesting question.
  • Citing an anonymous website as a research source. The specification wants authentic sources; a page with no publisher and no date fails your own test.
  • Treating corroboration as satisfied when two sites have copied the same wire copy. Corroboration means an independent source, and noticing the difference is exactly the analysis this aspect wants.
  • Asserting that regulation is censorship, or that it is protection, without attribution. Both positions are held by identifiable people; name them rather than adopting one silently.

Five mechanisms by which a newspaper touches politics

Fig. 2Influence is not one thing, and a top-band answer says which mechanism it means. Each row pairs the mechanism with the Gujarati word you would use and with the evidence that would actually support the claim. The row in heavier ink is the structural fact most often mistaken for an allegation: advertising revenue is a feature of the industry, not an accusation about anybody.

Key points

The Gujarati press is old, large and well documented, which makes this the aspect where you can be most concrete. The first newspaper in Gujarati, published in Bombay in 1822 by Fardunjee Marzban, survives as Mumbai Samachar and is among the oldest continuously published newspapers in Asia — a fact that also illustrates Theme 2's wider scope, since it is published outside the Gujarat state. Gujarat Mitra was founded in Surat in 1863. Two of the largest present-day Gujarati dailies, Sandesh and Gujarat Samachar, were founded in 1923 and 1932 respectively, and Divya Bhaskar launched in 2003. Learn three or four of these mastheads with dates and you have a factual spine that no invented figure could improve on.
The aspect asks about effect on રાજકારણ, politics, and the honest answer distinguishes several different mechanisms rather than gesturing at influence. Agenda-setting: which issues appear at all, which is a choice made daily. Framing: whether a protest is reported as a protest or as a disruption. Access: which politicians are interviewed and which are not. Scrutiny: the investigative function, which is the one the Press Council of India's stated purpose about maintaining and improving standards points at. And the economics: a newspaper depends on advertising revenue, and a large advertiser may be a government department, which is a structural fact about the relationship rather than an allegation about anybody.
This is contested ground and the qualification's method applies with full force. State institutional facts flatly and with dates. Attribute every characterisation of a newspaper's stance to whoever makes it — the Editors Guild of India, a named media-research organisation, a named academic, a named columnist. Name live disagreements as disagreements: the health of press freedom in India is a subject on which international indices, Indian government statements and Indian editors' bodies publicly disagree, and reporting that disagreement accurately is a stronger answer than adopting any one of the positions. Name no individual living journalist or politician in connection with a live legal case. And mark your own view as your view when you give it.
Two pieces of language make political writing possible. The first is reported speech, which in Gujarati is normally direct in form even where English would make it indirect, introduced with કે: તંત્રીએ કહ્યું કે… The complementiser કે is obligatory. The second is the vocabulary of position: પક્ષ a party, વિપક્ષ the opposition, સરકાર government, ચૂંટણી an election, મતદાર a voter, લોકમત public opinion, ટીકા criticism, સમર્થન support, તટસ્થ neutral, પક્ષપાત bias. With those, and with the attribution phrases from the previous section, you can write about politics without ever asserting something you cannot source.
Worked example

Paper 3 Section B: evaluating a spoken and a written source that disagree

Paper 3 Section B gives you a recorded discussion in which an editor defends the political coverage of the Gujarati press, and a written column arguing that coverage has narrowed. Part (c) asks you to evaluate the viewpoints in both sources, say which you agree with and why, and draw conclusions, in about 200 to 250 words. Build the answer.

  1. 01Read the grids before you write a word

Part (c) is marked by three grids: understand and respond to spoken language, AO1, out of 6; understand and respond to written language, AO2, out of 6; and accuracy and range of language, AO3, out of 10. Two things follow. Both sources must be used, because two of the three grids are source-specific and an answer that neglects one forfeits six marks. And AO3 is the largest single grid on this question, so range and accuracy are not a garnish here — they are 10 of the 22 marks the extended response carries.

  2. 02State each viewpoint as a claim with a ground

    તંત્રીના મતે ગુજરાતી અખબારો આજે પણ સ્થાનિક રાજકારણનું ઝીણવટભર્યું આવરણ આપે છે, કારણ કે જિલ્લા-સ્તરની આવૃત્તિઓ ટકી રહી છે. In the editor's view Gujarati newspapers still give detailed coverage of local politics, because district editions have survived. Then the written source: લેખકના મતે આવરણ ઘટ્યું નથી પણ સંકોચાયું છે — વિષયોની સંખ્યા એટલી જ છે, પરંતુ મતભેદની જગ્યા ઓછી થઈ છે. In the writer's view coverage has not shrunk but narrowed: the number of subjects is the same, but the room for disagreement has reduced.

  3. 03Evaluate by testing whether they actually contradict

This is the move that lifts the answer. The two claims are about different things — volume and range — and noticing that is evaluation rather than description. બંને દલીલો એકબીજાનું ખંડન કરતી નથી: એક જથ્થા વિશે છે, બીજી વિવિધતા વિશે. The two arguments do not refute each other: one is about quantity, the other about variety. An examiner reading the band descriptor about relevant and substantiated judgements showing clear evaluation is looking for exactly this.

  4. 04Say which you find better supported, and why, then conclude

મારા મતે લેખકની દલીલ વધુ મજબૂત છે, કારણ કે તેમણે બે અખબારોના શબ્દોની સરખામણી કરીને પુરાવો આપ્યો છે, જ્યારે તંત્રીએ માત્ર આવૃત્તિઓની સંખ્યા ગણાવી છે. In my view the writer's argument is stronger, because he has given evidence by comparing the wording of two newspapers, whereas the editor has only counted editions. The reason is about the quality of the evidence, not about which conclusion you prefer, and that is what makes it a judgement rather than a preference.

  5. 05Spend the last minutes on AO3, deliberately

With 10 of 22 marks on range and accuracy, reread for three things specifically: at least one subordinate clause with જો…તો or કારણ કે…તેથી; at least one passive or one participial construction to show range; and every perfective transitive carrying its ergative. The specification's own guidance defines complex language as including the pluperfect and future perfect, the passive, the subjunctive and subordination, so putting one of each in on purpose is not artificial — it is the grid.

Result: Two attributed claims, a test of whether they truly conflict, a judgement grounded in the quality of the evidence, and a deliberate final pass for AO3. In a 22-mark question where accuracy and range carry 10, that last pass is worth more than another sentence of content.

Exam focus

  • Name mastheads with dates. Mumbai Samachar from 1822, Gujarat Mitra 1863, Sandesh 1923, Gujarat Samachar 1932, Divya Bhaskar 2003 are dated, checkable facts.
  • Distinguish the mechanisms of influence — agenda-setting, framing, access, scrutiny, advertising economics — instead of using the word influence undefined.
  • Attribute every characterisation of a paper's political stance. Never assert one in your own voice.
  • કે after a verb of saying is obligatory in Gujarati. Dropping it, as English allows, is an error a marker sees immediately.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing that newspapers control public opinion. It is an effect claim about behaviour supported by evidence only of reach, and the grid treats it as unjustified.
  • Describing a named living journalist's or politician's conduct. Write about institutions, mechanisms and publicly reported positions.
  • Assuming the British press model. Ownership structures, language markets and regulation all differ, and the aspect is set in India.
  • Treating the decline of print as settled everywhere. Indian-language newspapers have a different trajectory from English-language ones, and saying so with attribution is a genuinely perceptive point.

Writing about the media: claim, source and effect#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9GU0 — Theme 2, sub-theme માધ્યમ — all three aspectsLPPearson Edexcel 9GU0 — Paper 2 Section A (translation into Gujarati)

Key points

Everything in this sub-theme comes down to writing sentences that keep three things visibly apart: what is claimed, who claims it, and what is supposed to follow. Gujarati has a compact machinery for each, and once you own it you can write about any medium in any of the three aspects. For the claim itself, the ordinary declarative with કે after a verb of saying. For the source, the postpositional attributions મુજબ, પ્રમાણે and અનુસાર (according to), the phrase ના મતે (in the view of), and the passive કરવામાં આવે છે (it is done, agentlessly). For the consequence, પરિણામે (as a result), તેથી (therefore), ને કારણે (because of), and the conditional pair જો… તો… (if… then…).
The passive deserves its own paragraph because it is more useful in this sub-theme than anywhere else and because the specification's own guidance lists the passive voice among the features that make language complex, which is one of the AO3 grid's stated criteria. Gujarati forms an agentless passive with the verbal noun in the locative plus આવવું: કહેવામાં આવે છે (it is said), માનવામાં આવે છે (it is believed), જણાવવામાં આવ્યું છે (it has been stated). There is also a capability-passive with -આવું and an instrumental agent in -થી, which is the construction the specification's grammar list illustrates with મારાથી આ કામ થાય છે, this work gets done by me. Use the first kind to report without endorsing, which is exactly what writing about contested media claims requires.
Effect sentences are where most candidates over-claim, and Gujarati offers a graded set of verbs that lets you say precisely how strong your claim is. અસર કરવી, to affect, is the weakest and safest. પ્રભાવ પાડવો, to exert influence, is stronger. બદલી નાખવું, to change completely, is very strong and should be reserved for something you can demonstrate. ફાળો આપવો, to contribute, is the honest middle term when several causes are at work, and it is often the right one: ઇન્ટરનેટે યુવાનોના વર્તનમાં ફેરફાર લાવવામાં ફાળો આપ્યો છે, the internet has contributed to bringing about change in young people's behaviour. Choosing the right verb on this ladder is a language decision that carries an analytical judgement, which is why it earns on both AO3 and AO4.
Finally, a habit for the exam room. Whenever you write a sentence about media in any paper, ask which of the three aspects it serves — effect on young people, reliability, or effect on politics — and whether an examiner could tell. If a sentence serves none of them, it is padding; if it serves one, make the connection explicit with a phrase such as આ બાબતમાં (in this respect) or આ જ કારણે (for this very reason). Explicit connective work is not clumsy in Gujarati academic prose; it is expected, and it is what the AO4 grid means when it asks for a sustained line of argument.
Worked example

Paper 2 Section A: an English media paragraph rebuilt in Gujarati

Translate into Gujarati: It is often said that newspapers have lost their influence. According to one editor, however, district editions are still read closely, and readers write letters when they disagree. Social media has contributed to the change but has not replaced the daily paper.

  1. 01Sentence one: keep the passive agentless

It is often said that becomes ઘણી વાર એવું કહેવામાં આવે છે કે — the agentless passive plus obligatory કે. newspapers have lost their influence becomes વર્તમાનપત્રોએ પોતાનો પ્રભાવ ગુમાવ્યો છે; વર્તમાનપત્રો takes the ergative -એ because ગુમાવ્યો છે is a perfective transitive, પોતાનો is the reflexive possessive meaning their own, and પ્રભાવ is masculine singular so the participle is ગુમાવ્યો. Resist the temptation to supply an agent such as લોકો કહે છે: the English withholds one and so should the Gujarati.

  2. 02Sentence two: attribution first, then a concessive

According to one editor becomes એક તંત્રીના મતે, with મતે following the oblique genitive. however becomes જોકે, placed early in the clause. district editions are still read closely becomes જિલ્લા-આવૃત્તિઓ આજે પણ ધ્યાનથી વંચાય છે — વંચાવું is the passive of વાંચવું, and ધ્યાનથી, with attention, does the work of closely. and readers write letters when they disagree becomes અને જ્યારે વાચકો સહમત ન હોય ત્યારે તેઓ પત્રો લખે છે, with the જ્યારે…ત્યારે correlative pair.

  3. 03Sentence three: the graded effect verb, used on purpose

Social media has contributed to the change becomes સામાજિક માધ્યમોએ આ પરિવર્તનમાં ફાળો આપ્યો છે — the ergative again, and ફાળો આપવો chosen deliberately over પ્રભાવ પાડવો because the English says contributed. but has not replaced the daily paper becomes પણ તેણે દૈનિક અખબારનું સ્થાન લીધું નથી; સ્થાન લેવું, to take the place of, is the natural Gujarati for replace, and the negative perfect લીધું નથી keeps the tense of the English.

  4. 04The three checks, in order

First, ergatives: વર્તમાનપત્રોએ, સામાજિક માધ્યમોએ, and the elided one in લીધું નથી whose subject તેણે is expressed. Second, agreement: ગુમાવ્યો with પ્રભાવ, આપ્યો with ફાળો, લીધું with સ્થાન. Third, the two obligatory particles: કે after કહેવામાં આવે છે, and the જ્યારે…ત્યારે pair kept intact. Those checks take a minute and they are where the marks are.

Two passives, two ergatives and one deliberately graded effect verb: everything the AO3 grid calls complex language, present because it was planned.

Exam focus

  • The passive કરવામાં આવે છે lets you report a contested claim without asserting it, and the specification lists the passive as complex language for AO3. It earns twice.
  • Grade your effect verbs: અસર કરવી, ફાળો આપવો, પ્રભાવ પાડવો, બદલી નાખવું. The choice is an analytical judgement.
  • કે is obligatory after a verb of saying, and મુજબ, પ્રમાણે and અનુસાર all follow the noun they attribute to.
  • Paper 2 Section A translations from this sub-theme are full of reported claims. Practise turning English it is said that and reports suggest into Gujarati passives rather than into invented agents.

Typical mistakes

  • Reaching for બદલી નાખવું when ફાળો આપવો is what the evidence supports. Over-claiming reads as unjustified in the grid and is easy to avoid.
  • Placing મુજબ before its noun. It follows: અહેવાલ મુજબ, not મુજબ અહેવાલ.
  • Building a passive with a supplied agent that the English did not have. If the source is agentless, keep it agentless.
  • Writing paragraph after paragraph with no connective. Gujarati expository prose signposts heavily, and an examiner reading for a sustained line of argument is reading the signposts.
