This topic is the second sub-theme of Theme 2 of Pearson Edexcel 9GU0: લોકપ્રિય સંસ્કૃતિમાં બદલાવ, change in popular culture, whose aspect line reads તહેવારો, ઉજવણીઓ તેમજ ગુજરાતી ફિલ્મ સંગીત — festivals, celebrations, as well as Gujarati film music. It fills the artistic-culture-2 slot and it is the sub-theme the specification means when it says Theme 2 covers artistic culture through festivals and traditions. Theme 2's research subject, ભારતીય સમાજ પર મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીનો પ્રભાવ — the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Indian society — is treated here in full as well, because it belongs to this theme and because the specification classifies it as political and intellectual culture. Theme 2 is the one theme whose scope admits other areas of India where Gujarati is spoken as well as the Gujarat state.

In the first year, learn the Gujarati calendar — the twelve months of the Vikram Samvat year in the order Gujarat uses, and where the main occasions sit in them — and then learn to describe ONE festival completely in Gujarati: what is done, by whom, what is eaten, what is worn, what is sung. A complete description of one occasion is worth far more than a thin gesture at ten.
higher level
The sub-theme's own title is બદલાવ, change, so the full A-Level expects an argument about what has changed and why, not an inventory of customs. Take one occasion and trace what has happened to it — where it is performed, who pays for it, who is admitted, what is broadcast — and support each step from a named Gujarati source. Then do the same for Gandhi: an argument about influence is only as good as its account of the mechanism.

The Gujarati year and its occasions
Translate into English: આસો સુદ એકમથી નોમ સુધી નવરાત્રિ ઊજવાય છે. પહેલાં ગરબા મુખ્યત્વે શેરીના ચોકમાં થતા, પણ હવે મોટાં આયોજનો મેદાનમાં થાય છે અને તેની ટિકિટ પણ હોય છે. જૂનાં ગીતો હજી ગવાય છે, છતાં તેમની સાથે નવું સંગીત પણ ભળ્યું છે.
આસો સુદ એકમથી નોમ સુધી — from the first of the bright fortnight of Aso to the ninth; note the paired postpositions -થી, from, and સુધી, up to, and that એકમ and નોમ are lunar day names rather than ordinary numerals. નવરાત્રિ ઊજવાય છે — Navratri is celebrated; ઊજવાવું is the passive of ઊજવવું, to celebrate, and English should keep the passive because the Gujarati gives no agent. So: Navratri is celebrated from the first to the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Aso.
પહેલાં ગરબા મુખ્યત્વે શેરીના ચોકમાં થતા — formerly garbas took place chiefly in the neighbourhood square; થતા is the imperfective participle with an understood હતા, giving a habitual past. પણ હવે મોટાં આયોજનો મેદાનમાં થાય છે — but now large events take place on grounds; આયોજન is an organised event, neuter, so મોટાં agrees in the neuter plural. અને તેની ટિકિટ પણ હોય છે — and there is a ticket for it too. The contrast between પહેલાં plus habitual past and હવે plus present is the whole architecture of the sentence, and English must keep it.
જૂનાં ગીતો હજી ગવાય છે — the old songs are still sung; ગવાવું is the passive of ગાવું. છતાં તેમની સાથે નવું સંગીત પણ ભળ્યું છે — yet new music has mingled with them too; ભળવું is to mix or blend, intransitive, so no ergative appears and the participle ભળ્યું agrees with the neuter સંગીત. છતાં is the concessive, and હજી, still, is again the load-bearing word: the paragraph is about continuity within change.
Two readings. First check the argument survives: formerly street, now grounds, still the old songs but new music too. If your English does not say all three, the translation has failed even if every word is right. Then check the chunks for the points-based scheme: from the first to the ninth; bright fortnight; of Aso; is celebrated; formerly; chiefly; in the neighbourhood square; but now; large events; on grounds; a ticket too; the old songs; still; are sung; yet; new music; has mingled.
Result: Navratri is celebrated from the first to the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Aso. Formerly garbas took place chiefly in the neighbourhood square, but now large events are held on grounds and there is a ticket for them too. The old songs are still sung, yet new music has mingled with them. Three passives, one habitual past, one concessive: exactly the sub-theme's own subject, change, expressed as grammar.

Translate into Gujarati: Twenty years ago a wedding lasted several days and the whole street was invited. Today many families hold a shorter ceremony in a hall, because the relatives come from different cities and cannot stay long. Even so, the songs that are sung have not changed much.
Twenty years ago becomes વીસ વર્ષ પહેલાં — the numeral, the noun in the singular as Gujarati prefers after a numeral, and પહેલાં, before or ago, which follows. a wedding lasted several days becomes લગ્ન કેટલાય દિવસ ચાલતાં — ચાલવું, to run or last, in the imperfective for habitual past, agreeing with the neuter plural લગ્ન. and the whole street was invited becomes અને આખી શેરીને નિમંત્રણ અપાતું — literally an invitation used to be given to the whole street, with the dative -ને and the passive imperfect અપાતું.
Gujarati normally puts the reason after the result with કારણ કે, exactly as English does with because, so the order can be kept. Today many families hold a shorter ceremony in a hall becomes આજે ઘણાં કુટુંબો હોલમાં ટૂંકો સમારંભ યોજે છે — યોજવું, to hold or organise, is the right verb for an event; સમારંભ is a ceremony or function, masculine, hence ટૂંકો. because the relatives come from different cities and cannot stay long becomes કારણ કે સગાંવહાલાં જુદાં જુદાં શહેરોમાંથી આવે છે અને લાંબું રોકાઈ શકતાં નથી — with the stacked ablative -માંથી and the capability auxiliary શકવું negated.
Even so becomes તેમ છતાં, placed first. the songs that are sung becomes જે ગીતો ગવાય છે તે — Gujarati builds a relative clause with the correlative pair જે… તે…, and the relative comes first: literally which songs are sung, those. have not changed much becomes ખાસ બદલાયાં નથી, with ખાસ, particularly or much, and the neuter plural agreement on બદલાયાં. Full: તેમ છતાં જે ગીતો ગવાય છે તે ખાસ બદલાયાં નથી.
This paragraph has no perfective transitive at all, so there is no ergative to check — which is itself worth noticing, because candidates trained to hunt for -એ sometimes insert one where the verb is intransitive or passive. What there is instead is agreement in four places: ચાલતાં and બદલાયાં with neuter plurals, ટૂંકો with a masculine singular, and અપાતું with the neuter. Check those four, and check that the જે… તે… pair is complete.
The teaching points are the habitual past in -તું, the correlative relative જે… તે…, and the discipline of not inserting an ergative where none belongs.

A Section B text discusses how a garba once sung by a small circle in a courtyard is now performed by a band with amplification at a ticketed event. The question is: લેખકના મતે આ ફેરફારથી શું ખોવાયું છે અને શું મળ્યું છે? તમારા શબ્દોમાં જવાબ આપો. Write the answer.
શું ખોવાયું છે અને શું મળ્યું છે — what has been lost and what has been gained. An answer that only lists losses answers half the question, and this is the commonest way to lose marks on a two-part open response. Before writing, put a mark in the margin against one loss and one gain in the text.
તમારા શબ્દોમાં allows you to reword; લેખકના મતે does not allow you to substitute your own judgement. So the loss and the gain must both be the author's. Look for the evaluative signals: ગુમાવ્યું છે, ઓછું થયું છે, હવે રહ્યું નથી on the loss side; મળ્યું છે, વધ્યું છે, નવી તક on the gain side.
If the text says શેરીના ચોકની આત્મીયતા ઓછી થઈ છે, do not copy it. Write નિકટતા ઘટી છે or નાના વર્તુળનું અંગત વાતાવરણ ઓછું થયું છે. The examiner is checking that you can restate, which is a comprehension test disguised as a writing test. Keeping a short list of synonym pairs — આત્મીયતા and નિકટતા, વધવું and વૃદ્ધિ પામવી, ઓછું થવું and ઘટવું — makes this fast.
લેખકના મતે નાના વર્તુળનું અંગત વાતાવરણ ઘટ્યું છે, પણ સામે પક્ષે ગરબાને ઘણો મોટો શ્રોતાવર્ગ અને કલાકારોને આવક મળી છે. In the author's view the intimate atmosphere of the small circle has diminished, but on the other side garba has gained a much larger audience and the performers an income. સામે પક્ષે, on the other side, does the balancing work that the two-part question requires.
Result: Two-part questions need two-part answers, with both halves attributed to the author and both reworded. The transferable habit is the marginal mark: identify the loss and the gain in the text before you begin to write, so the balance is built in rather than remembered.

The listening source is an older musician saying that garba has lost its devotional character; the written source is a younger organiser arguing that it has found a new audience and a new economy. Write the two summaries so that part (c) becomes easy.
Section B is a single 30-mark question in parts: you summarise the different points of view in each source, and then you evaluate them and draw conclusions. The summaries are not a warm-up. They are the material part (c) will use, so write them on a shared axis — that is, make them answer the same question — or part (c) will have nothing to weigh.
વક્તાના મતે ગરબાનું ધાર્મિક સ્વરૂપ ઘટ્યું છે, કારણ કે હવે તે માતાજીની આરાધનાને બદલે મનોરંજનનું આયોજન બની ગયું છે. In the speaker's view the devotional form of garba has diminished, because it has now become an entertainment event rather than worship. Note ને બદલે, instead of, which is the postposition that makes a replacement claim, and બની જવું, to become, with the compound auxiliary signalling completion.
લેખકના મતે સ્વરૂપ બદલાયું છે એ ખરું, પણ એ ઘટાડો નથી: નવા શ્રોતાવર્ગ અને કલાકારોની આવકને કારણે ગરબા વધુ લોકો સુધી પહોંચ્યા છે. In the writer's view it is true that the form has changed, but this is not a decline: because of a new audience and performers' incomes, garba has reached more people. The two summaries now disagree about the same thing — whether change equals loss — which is exactly what part (c) needs.
Because both summaries answer whether change equals loss, part (c) can open by naming the real disagreement rather than restating both sources: બંને એ વાત પર સહમત છે કે ગરબાનું સ્વરૂપ બદલાયું છે; મતભેદ એ છે કે એ ફેરફારને ખોટ ગણવી કે નહીં. Both agree that the form of garba has changed; the disagreement is whether that change should be counted as a loss. An examiner reading for clear evaluation has it in the first sentence.
Result: Two summaries written on a shared axis, each a claim with a ground and an attribution phrase. The technique to keep: write summary (b) with summary (a) in front of you, and make them answer the same question, because part (c) is marked on evaluation and you cannot evaluate two sources that are not talking about the same thing.

The three aspects of the Gandhi research subject, and what each demands
The unseen text is a Gujarati column published around 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti, arguing that commemoration has replaced practice. The statement is ગાંધીજીનો વારસો આજે માત્ર સ્મરણ પૂરતો રહી ગયો છે — Gandhi's legacy today has been reduced to remembrance alone. Build the answer.
માત્ર, only, is doing the work, reinforced by પૂરતો, merely to the extent of. The statement is not that commemoration exists; it is that nothing else does. That is a strong claim and therefore an arguable one. Decide your position on માત્ર before writing a word.
This is the analytical move the subject rewards. Legacy as commemoration: 2 October is a national holiday in India, Gandhi Jayanti, and the United Nations declared it the International Day of Non-Violence in 2007. Legacy as institution: Sabarmati Ashram, Gujarat Vidyapith founded in 1920, Navjivan Trust founded in 1919 all still exist and do things. Legacy as method: satyagraha as a repertoire of protest that later movements, inside and outside India, have explicitly claimed. Three different things, three different kinds of evidence, and the statement is only really true of the first.
આ વિધાનમાં એક ભાગ સાચો છે: સ્મરણનું પ્રમાણ વધ્યું છે અને ૨ ઓક્ટોબર રાષ્ટ્રીય રજા છે. પણ વારસો શબ્દના ત્રણ અર્થ છે — સ્મરણ, સંસ્થા અને પદ્ધતિ — અને વિધાન માત્ર પહેલા અર્થને લાગુ પડે છે। Part of this statement is true: commemoration has increased and 2 October is a national holiday. But the word legacy has three senses — remembrance, institution and method — and the statement applies only to the first. That opening has already earned on AO4 by making a distinction.
AO2 is 10 marks for using relevant information from the text. So engage with the column rather than quoting it: લેખકની દલીલ મજબૂત છે જ્યાં તેઓ સમારંભની વાત કરે છે, પણ તેઓ સંસ્થાઓનો ઉલ્લેખ કરતા નથી. The writer's argument is strong where he speaks of ceremonies, but he makes no mention of the institutions. Naming what a source does NOT say is one of the most efficient ways to earn on AO2 while advancing your own argument.
એ પણ ખરું કે ગાંધીજીના જાતિ અંગેના વલણ પર ઇતિહાસકારો વચ્ચે ગંભીર મતભેદ છે, અને એ ચર્ચા પોતે જ વારસાનો એક ભાગ છે। It is also true that there is serious disagreement among historians about Gandhi's position on caste, and that debate is itself a part of the legacy. That sentence is accurate, attributed to historians rather than asserted, and analytically useful — an argument that is still being had is evidence against the claim that only remembrance remains.
ટૂંકમાં, સ્મરણ વધ્યું છે એ સાચું, પણ માત્ર શબ્દ ટકતો નથી: સંસ્થાઓ કાર્યરત છે અને પદ્ધતિ હજી વપરાય છે। મારા મતે વારસો સંકોચાયો છે, ખતમ થયો નથી। In short, it is true that remembrance has increased, but the word only does not hold: the institutions are working and the method is still used. In my view the legacy has narrowed, not ended. The judgement is marked as one, and it answers the exact word the essay opened on.
Result: One contested word, one distinction that does most of the analytical work, an unseen text engaged with rather than quoted, one contested area reported with attribution, and a conclusion that returns to the opening word. The distinction between legacy as remembrance, as institution and as method is the transferable idea.
