Youth culture: fashion and trends, music and television

Jugendkultur: Mode, Musik und Fernsehen is the third sub-theme of Aspects of German-speaking society and carries three strands: Mode und Image, Die Bedeutung der Musik für Jugendliche and Die Rolle des Fernsehens. These notes cover what a strong answer needs - clothing as a signal of belonging and the fast-fashion debate, the German-language music landscape from the Neue Deutsche Welle and Austropop to today's dominant Deutschrap, the distinctive public-service broadcasting systems of Germany, Austria and Switzerland with their Rundfunkbeitrag, and the shift from linear television to streaming - together with the grammar this sub-theme drills hardest: adjective endings, comparatives and superlatives, and the reflexive verbs of self-presentation.

basic level

Jugendkultur belongs to Aspects of German-speaking society and is therefore examinable at AS as well as at A-level. At the basic level, accurate description of clothing, musical taste and viewing habits, with correct adjective endings and comparatives, is the expectation.

higher level

The full A-Level expects taste to be explained as a social signal rather than reported, named German-language artists, genres and broadcasters to be used as evidence, and at least one contrast drawn between Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Clothing as a signal: Mode und Image#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7662 3.1.1 - Jugendkultur: Mode und ImageLPDfE GCE modern foreign languages subject content

Key points

Treat clothing as communication, because that is the analytical frame the specification's word Image invites. Kleidung ist eine Form der Selbstdarstellung: sie signalisiert Zugehörigkeit zu einer Gruppe und zugleich Abgrenzung von anderen. The two nouns to hold onto are die Zugehörigkeit (belonging) and die Abgrenzung (setting oneself apart), because almost every argument in the strand is built from that pair. Around them: der Kleidungsstil, das Erscheinungsbild, das Auftreten, der erste Eindruck, das Selbstbewusstsein and der Gruppenzwang - peer pressure, and the term that examiners look for in any answer about why teenagers dress alike.
The brand question is the strand's classic essay. On one side, das Markenbewusstsein is real and expensive: Markenkleidung verspricht Anerkennung, und wer sie sich nicht leisten kann, fühlt sich schnell ausgeschlossen. On the other, brands are not the only currency: Secondhandmode, Vintage and der Individualstil have become their own kind of prestige, and in German-speaking countries the Flohmarkt and the Kleiderkreisel or Kleidertauschparty are ordinary parts of youth life rather than eccentricities. A useful sentence for either side: Was als Statussymbol gilt, ändert sich schnell - entscheidend ist weniger die Marke selbst als das, was sie in einer bestimmten Gruppe bedeutet.
Fast fashion is where this sub-theme meets sustainability, and it is worth naming the mechanism rather than the mood. Die schnelle Mode arbeitet mit kurzen Kollektionszyklen, niedrigen Preisen und einer hohen Rücksendequote im Onlinehandel; die Folgen sind ein enormer Ressourcenverbrauch, Textilabfälle und häufig schlechte Arbeitsbedingungen in den Produktionsländern. The counter-vocabulary is equally nameable: nachhaltige Mode, faire Produktion, Bio-Baumwolle, das Recycling, die Kreislaufwirtschaft, das Siegel. And the honest qualifier: Nachhaltige Kleidung ist meist teurer, weshalb die Entscheidung dafür auch eine Frage des Einkommens ist - a class observation that turns a moral point into a social one.
A comparative detail worth having ready, because British candidates own it naturally: school uniform is not usual in German-speaking countries. Schuluniformen sind in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz unüblich, was regelmäßig zu Debatten führt: Befürworter versprechen sich weniger Gruppenzwang und weniger sichtbare soziale Unterschiede, Gegner sehen darin einen Eingriff in die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung. Framed like that, a familiar British experience becomes a piece of comparative cultural knowledge - which is precisely what AO4 credits, and the debate has the merit of being both true and easy to argue on either side.
Worked example

Translation into German: adjective endings decided one at a time

Translate into German: Many young people wear expensive brand-name clothing because they want to belong to a particular group. A new jacket can cost more than a second-hand bicycle, although it will be out of fashion within a year. The most sustainable solution is often the oldest one.

  1. 01Decide determiner before ending, every time

Expensive brand-name clothing has no article and is a plural mass expression, so the adjective carries the STRONG ending: teure Markenkleidung is singular feminine accusative with no determiner, hence teure. The rule to internalise: if no determiner shows the case, the adjective must - that is the whole logic of the German three-way system.

  2. 02Build the purpose clause

Because they want to belong to a particular group = weil sie zu einer bestimmten Gruppe gehören wollen. Gehören takes zu plus dative, so einer bestimmten Gruppe with the weak ending -en after einer in the dative feminine. Weil sends the modal wollen to the very end, after the infinitive gehören.

  3. 03Handle the comparative with als

A new jacket can cost more than a second-hand bicycle = eine neue Jacke kann mehr kosten als ein gebrauchtes Fahrrad. Eine neue Jacke: nominative feminine after eine takes -e. Ein gebrauchtes Fahrrad: nominative neuter after ein takes the strong -es, because ein itself shows no neuter marker. Comparison is als, never wie - wie is for equality, so groß wie.

  4. 04Get the concessive future right

Although it will be out of fashion within a year = obwohl sie schon in einem Jahr nicht mehr modern ist. German can use the present for a scheduled future, and here it is the more natural choice; if you want the future, obwohl sie ... sein wird, with wird last. Note sie, because Jacke is feminine - pronoun gender follows the German noun, not the English one.

  5. 05Form the superlative attributively

The most sustainable solution is die nachhaltigste Lösung - German builds the superlative with -st plus the adjective ending, not with a word for most. After the definite article the ending is weak -e. And the oldest one is die älteste, with the umlaut that alt takes in comparison: alt, älter, am ältesten.

Result: Viele Jugendliche tragen teure Markenkleidung, weil sie zu einer bestimmten Gruppe gehören wollen. Eine neue Jacke kann mehr kosten als ein gebrauchtes Fahrrad, obwohl sie schon in einem Jahr nicht mehr modern ist. Die nachhaltigste Lösung ist oft die älteste.

Exam focus

  • Frame clothing as Zugehörigkeit and Abgrenzung rather than as personal preference (AO4).
  • Get adjective endings right in every clothing description; this strand generates more attributive adjectives than any other (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Using die Mode for a single garment; die Mode is fashion as a phenomenon, while items are die Kleidung, das Kleidungsstück or die Klamotten in colloquial register.
  • Writing er trägt ein schwarzer Pullover; after ein the masculine accusative adjective takes -en - einen schwarzen Pullover.

What music does: Die Bedeutung der Musik für Jugendliche#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7662 3.1.1 - Jugendkultur: Die Bedeutung der Musik für JugendlicheLPDfE GCE modern foreign languages subject content

Key points

Answer the strand's actual question - what music is FOR - before listing genres. Four functions cover almost everything: Identitätsstiftung, since musical taste is one of the first things adolescents use to say who they are; Gemeinschaft, because a genre comes with a group, a look and a set of places; Abgrenzung von den Eltern, the oldest function of all and the one that explains why each generation's music is unlistenable to the previous one; and Verarbeitung von Gefühlen, the private use, which is why lyrics matter more at seventeen than at forty. In German: Musik stiftet Identität, schafft Gemeinschaft, ermöglicht Abgrenzung und hilft bei der Verarbeitung von Gefühlen.
Know the German-language landscape well enough to name things, because AO4 rewards cultural specificity and this strand makes it easy. Kraftwerk, from Düsseldorf, are among the acknowledged pioneers of electronic music and are cited internationally as such. Die Neue Deutsche Welle of the early 1980s made German-language pop commercially dominant for a few years and produced international hits. Punk and rock have long-running German-language institutions in Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte. Rammstein made a heavy, deliberately German-sounding rock into a global export. In Austria, Austropop - Wolfgang Ambros, Rainhard Fendrich - built a repertoire in dialect, and Falco became the best-known Austrian pop export of the 1980s. In Switzerland, Mundartrock sings in Swiss German dialect rather than standard German, which is itself a cultural statement.
The present-day picture is dominated by Deutschrap, and it is worth explaining rather than merely naming. German-language hip-hop has for years occupied a large share of the domestic charts, it is the genre in which many young people with migration histories have found a public voice, and its lyrics are a major source of contemporary colloquial German - which is exactly why exam passages use it. It is also contested: critics point to sexist and violent lyrics and to conflicts about prizes and public funding, while defenders argue that the genre documents social realities that other music ignores. Present the disagreement, do not resolve it: Deutschrap ist zugleich die kommerziell erfolgreichste und die umstrittenste Musikrichtung des Landes.
One recurring debate is worth having ready because it belongs to no other sub-theme. In the early 2000s German politicians debated a Radioquote - a minimum share of German-language music on radio, modelled on the French quota. It was never introduced as law, and the arguments on both sides are still made: supporters said the domestic music scene needed protection from an English-language market, opponents said quotas patronise listeners and cannot be defined without arbitrary rules. Note the honest formulation - eine gesetzliche Quote wurde diskutiert, aber nicht eingeführt - which is both accurate and shows you can distinguish a proposal from a law, a distinction candidates blur constantly.
Worked example

Translation into English: a passage on German-language rap

Translate into English: „Dass deutschsprachiger Rap heute die Charts beherrscht, hätte in den Neunzigern kaum jemand für möglich gehalten. Damals galt Deutsch als eine Sprache, in der man nicht rappen könne, weil sie zu hart klinge. Inzwischen ist genau diese Härte zum Markenzeichen geworden."

  1. 01Unpack the fronted dass-clause

Dass deutschsprachiger Rap heute die Charts beherrscht is a whole subordinate clause standing in first position, so the main clause's finite verb hätte comes immediately after it. English needs a different order: hardly anyone in the nineties would have thought it possible that ... . Recognising a fronted dass-clause is worth practising, because German uses it far more readily than English.

  2. 02Handle the conditional perfect

Hätte ... für möglich gehalten is Konjunktiv II perfect: would have thought possible. Etwas für möglich halten is the fixed phrase to consider something possible - halten für plus accusative, not denken. Kaum jemand is hardly anyone.

  3. 03Recognise Konjunktiv I in reported opinion

In der man nicht rappen könne, weil sie zu hart klinge uses Konjunktiv I - könne, klinge - to mark that this is reported received opinion, not the writer's own view. English signals it lexically instead: a language you supposedly could not rap in, because it sounded too harsh. Do not translate it as a possibility; it is a distancing device.

  4. 04Read galt as the past of gelten

Damals galt Deutsch als ... : gelten als means to be regarded as, and galt is its simple past. Damals is back then, in contrast with inzwischen in the last sentence - the passage is built on that time axis and a translation should preserve it.

  5. 05Render the final transformation

Inzwischen ist genau diese Härte zum Markenzeichen geworden = meanwhile that very harshness has become a trademark. Genau diese is that very; zum Markenzeichen werden is werden plus zu plus dative, the standard German for to become something. Note the neat rhetorical closure: the objection has turned into the selling point, and the English should land that.

Result: Hardly anyone in the nineties would have thought it possible that German-language rap would dominate the charts today. Back then German was regarded as a language you supposedly could not rap in, because it sounded too harsh. Meanwhile that very harshness has become its trademark.

Exam focus

  • Explain the four functions of music - Identität, Gemeinschaft, Abgrenzung, Verarbeitung - before naming any genre (AO4).
  • Name at least one German, one Austrian and one Swiss musical reference; the specification requires knowledge beyond Germany (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Presenting the Radioquote as a law; it was debated and not introduced.
  • Saying junge Leute hören Musik and stopping; the mark is in what the listening does socially, not in the fact of it.

The screen: Die Rolle des Fernsehens#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7662 3.1.1 - Jugendkultur: Die Rolle des FernsehensLPDfE GCE modern foreign languages subject content

Key points

The German-speaking broadcasting system is genuinely distinctive and is the knowledge that separates a good answer from a generic one. Germany has a dual system: der öffentlich-rechtliche Rundfunk - principally ARD, with its regional broadcasters, and ZDF - alongside private channels such as RTL, ProSieben and Sat.1. Public-service broadcasting is financed not by advertising or by taxation but by der Rundfunkbeitrag, a contribution payable per household since the reform of 2013, which replaced the older device-based fee. Austria has the ORF and Switzerland the SRG SSR, which broadcasts in the country's different language regions - a structural fact that says something about Swiss multilingualism as well as about television.
The mandate matters because it is the basis of every argument about the system. Der öffentlich-rechtliche Rundfunk hat einen Bildungs-, Informations- und Kulturauftrag: er soll unabhängig von Einschaltquoten und Werbeeinnahmen berichten und die Meinungsvielfalt sichern. That mandate is also why the system is permanently contested. Kritiker halten den Beitrag für zu hoch, werfen den Sendern Aufgeblähtheit oder politische Schlagseite vor und fragen, warum sie ein Angebot mitfinanzieren sollen, das sie nicht nutzen. Defenders answer that independent journalism cannot be financed by a market that rewards attention, and that a beitragsfinanziertes System is precisely a defence against both commercial and governmental pressure.
Now the shift that the strand is really about. Lineares Fernsehen - watching at the time of broadcast - has lost young audiences to Streamingdienste and to video platforms, and the vocabulary of that change is exam-ready: das Streaming, der Abrufdienst, die Mediathek (the catch-up service of a broadcaster, a very German word), bingewatchen or am Stück schauen, der Algorithmus, die Empfehlung, die zweite Bildschirmnutzung. The measured claim is better than the dramatic one: Das Fernsehen verschwindet nicht, es verlagert sich - Inhalte werden weiterhin produziert, aber zeitversetzt, mobil und individuell abgerufen.
Keep two or three named formats ready, because concrete references are what raise a description into evidence. Tatort, the Sunday-evening crime series broadcast since 1970 and produced in rotation by the regional broadcasters, is a genuine national ritual and a standing point of reference in German conversation. Die Sendung mit der Maus has explained the world to German children for decades. Talent shows, Castingshows and Reality-Formate dominate private-channel schedules and generate the standard criticisms - Inszenierung, Klischees, die Bloßstellung der Teilnehmenden. One sentence with a named format is worth a paragraph of general observation about television.
Worked example

Reading technique: an inference question on a media text

A reading text ends: „Natürlich schaut auch meine Generation noch fern - nur eben nicht dann, wenn es gesendet wird, und nicht auf dem Gerät, das im Wohnzimmer steht." The question is: „Was will die Autorin damit sagen? Antworte auf Deutsch." Work out the answer.

  1. 01Read natürlich as a concession, not an affirmation

Natürlich at the start of a sentence usually concedes a point in order to qualify it: of course we still watch television - it is the setup for the correction that follows. The dash is doing the same job as aber.

  2. 02Isolate the two corrections

Nicht dann, wenn es gesendet wird corrects the TIME: not at the moment of broadcast. Nicht auf dem Gerät, das im Wohnzimmer steht corrects the DEVICE: not on the set in the living room. Two parallel negations, each with a relative or temporal clause attached - this parallel structure is the sentence's argument.

  3. 03Notice nur eben

Nur eben is a two-particle combination meaning it's just that. Eben marks the correction as obvious and unremarkable, which is the tone of the whole sentence: the author is not announcing a revolution, she is correcting a misunderstanding. Reading that tone correctly is what the inference question is testing.

  4. 04Do not add what is not there

The sentence does not say that television is dying, that young people watch less, or that streaming is better. It says only that the practice continues while its time and place have changed. Answers that import a general verdict about the death of television lose the mark, however plausible the verdict.

  5. 05Write the answer in German, briefly

Sie will sagen, dass ihre Generation durchaus fernsieht, dies aber zeitversetzt und auf mobilen Geräten tut. Nicht das Fernsehen selbst habe sich erledigt, sondern die feste Sendezeit und der klassische Fernseher. Note habe - Konjunktiv I is the natural German for reporting what the author says, and it is a cheap way to show mood control.

Result: Sie will sagen, dass ihre Generation weiterhin fernsieht, allerdings zeitversetzt und auf anderen Geräten. Überholt seien also nicht die Inhalte, sondern die feste Sendezeit und der Fernseher im Wohnzimmer.

Exam focus

  • Explain the Rundfunkbeitrag and the public-service mandate; this is the highest-value factual detail in the strand (AO4).
  • Argue that television is displaced rather than dying - verlagert sich, not verschwindet - and give the mechanism (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Calling the Rundfunkbeitrag a tax; it is a household contribution set by the Länder, not a tax, and the distinction is part of the debate.
  • Treating die Mediathek as a library; it is a broadcaster's on-demand catch-up service.

Active revision

Wortschatz und Wendungen: taste, trends and how to discuss them#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7662 3.1.1 - JugendkulturLPAQA 7662 3.3 Grammar

Key points

The lexical field, in blocks. Two warnings: die Sendung is a programme while der Sender is a channel, and eine Serie has Staffeln and Folgen, not Seasons und Episoden.
Youth language itself is part of the sub-theme and can be discussed without imitating it. Die Jugendsprache is characterised by rapid change, by English borrowings, by shortening (Alter, krass, lit) and by a function that is more social than semantic: sie dient der Abgrenzung von der Erwachsenenwelt und der Zugehörigkeit zur eigenen Gruppe. A German publisher has for years selected a Jugendwort des Jahres, which is itself a topic of half-amused debate about whether adults choosing a youth word is a contradiction. In your own writing, however, keep the register standard: describe Jugendsprache, do not write in it, since the AO3 descriptors reward range and accuracy rather than authenticity of slang.
The grammar this sub-theme drills hardest is the adjective, and it is worth naming the system rather than guessing. German has three sets of endings. After der, die, das, dieser, jeder the ending is WEAK - mostly -e or -en. After ein, kein, mein it is MIXED - the adjective must supply the marker exactly where ein has none, hence ein neuer Pullover, ein neues Hemd. With no determiner at all it is STRONG - the adjective takes the article's own ending, hence guter Wein, teure Kleidung, schöne Lieder. Learn it as one question: does something before the adjective already show the case and gender? If yes, the adjective can relax; if no, it must do the work.
Finally, comparison, which this sub-theme requires constantly. Regular: schön, schöner, am schönsten. With umlaut in many one-syllable adjectives: alt, älter, am ältesten; groß, größer, am größten; jung, jünger, am jüngsten. Irregular: gut, besser, am besten; viel, mehr, am meisten; gern, lieber, am liebsten; hoch, höher, am höchsten; nah, näher, am nächsten. Attributively the superlative takes an ending: der beste Song, die neueste Folge, mein liebster Sender. And the comparison words are als for inequality and (so) wie for equality - älter als, aber nicht so alt wie.
Worked example

Repairing a paragraph full of ending errors

A candidate writes: Ich habe ein neu Handy und höre gern deutscher Rap. Meine Lieblingsserie ist besser wie die alte Serien im Fernsehen. Junge Leute tragen teuere Marken weil sie wollen dazugehören. Correct it and explain each repair.

  1. 01Fix the mixed declension after ein

Ein neu Handy must be ein neues Handy. Handy is neuter, and in the accusative neuter ein shows no ending, so the adjective supplies the strong marker -es. This is the whole logic of the mixed set: the adjective covers for the article exactly where the article is silent.

  2. 02Fix the strong declension with no determiner

Höre gern deutscher Rap: Rap is masculine and here it is the direct object, so accusative - and with no determiner the adjective takes the strong accusative masculine ending -en: deutschen Rap. Deutscher would be nominative, which is the case the sentence does not need.

  3. 03Repair the comparison and the plural

Besser wie becomes besser als - wie is for equality only. Die alte Serien becomes die alten Serien: after the definite article in the plural the ending is always weak -en, regardless of case. Plural adjectives after der/die/das are the one corner of the system with no exceptions, which makes them free marks.

  4. 04Fix the spelling of teuer plus ending

Teuere is not standard: teuer drops its second e before an ending, giving teure Marken. The same happens to dunkel, giving dunkle, and to sauer, giving saure. It is a small point, but it is one an examiner marking AO3 notices immediately.

  5. 05Rebuild the causal clause with verb-final order

Weil sie wollen dazugehören must be weil sie dazugehören wollen: weil sends the finite verb wollen to the end, after the infinitive dazugehören. Dazugehören is separable, but in a subordinate clause it stays whole and simply moves - which is one of the reasons subordinate order is easier than students fear.

Result: Ich habe ein neues Handy und höre gern deutschen Rap. Meine Lieblingsserie ist besser als die alten Serien im Fernsehen. Junge Leute tragen teure Marken, weil sie dazugehören wollen.

Exam focus

  • Apply the weak, mixed and strong adjective systems deliberately rather than by ear (AO3).
  • Use gern, lieber, am liebsten to express preference; it is the natural German and candidates reach instead for bevorzugen (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing mein Lieblingssender ist besser wie deiner; comparison of inequality takes als.
  • Mixing up der Sender (channel) and die Sendung (programme), which reverses the meaning of most sentences about television.

§ 05

In der Prüfung: the summary question in Paper 1#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7662 4.4 Paper 1 - Listening, reading and writingLPAQA 7662 4.4.3 - Assessment of summary questions

Key points

Paper 1 contains exactly two summary questions - one on a listening passage and one on a reading text - and youth-culture material is a favourite source for both, because it is accessible enough that the difficulty can live in the summarising rather than in the content. The mechanics are worth knowing exactly. Content and language are marked independently: the content mark is AO1 for the listening summary and AO2 for the reading summary, while the language mark is AO3, worth 5 marks on the scale printed in the specification. You must write in full sentences and use your own words as far as possible. Marking of a long summary stops at the first natural break between 90 and 100 words - so material beyond that point is simply not read.
The consequence of that rule is a discipline: plan the content before writing a word. Identify the bullet points the question asks you to cover, find the passage material that answers each one, and only then start composing. Candidates who write as they listen or read produce 140 words of which the last 45 are unread, and the unread portion routinely contains the third content point. Aim at 95 words. If you overshoot, cut adjectives and examples, never a point; if you undershoot, extend an existing point with a subordinate clause rather than adding a fourth topic.
The own-words requirement is where AO3 is won and lost. Lifted language is not eligible for credit when the AO3 mark is awarded, so a summary assembled from the text's own phrases can score well on content and near zero on language. Build a set of reformulation moves and practise them on any German sentence: turn a noun into a verb and back (die Verbreitung von Falschmeldungen becomes Falschmeldungen verbreiten sich schnell); swap active for passive; replace a verb with a near-synonym (bevorzugen for lieber mögen, zurückgehen for weniger werden); and change the connective (deshalb for daher, obwohl for trotz). None of these requires vocabulary you do not have - only the habit of not writing the first words you saw.
Two further rules that cost marks quietly. First, no content mark is awarded for a point where you include irrelevant material or copy inappropriately from the stimulus - so a summary padded with unasked-for detail can lose points it appeared to have made. Second, in comprehension questions elsewhere in the paper that carry no AO3 mark, using the text's own words IS permitted where that is the natural answer, and minor spelling slips that do not distort meaning are tolerated. Knowing which regime applies to which question is worth several marks a paper: summary means reformulate, comprehension means answer precisely.
Worked example

Writing the 95-word summary from a listening passage

A listening passage reports that young people in German-speaking countries watch far less linear television than their parents, that public broadcasters have responded by expanding their Mediatheken, and that critics doubt whether this is enough to reach a young audience. Write the summary in German.

  1. 01Fix the three content points

One: the generational gap in linear viewing. Two: the broadcasters' response through catch-up services. Three: the doubt about whether it is sufficient. Write these three as headings on your paper before you compose a sentence; everything else in the passage is illustration.

  2. 02Reformulate each point on paper before writing prose

Weniger fernsehen becomes das lineare Programm kaum noch nutzen. Mediatheken ausgebaut becomes ihr Angebot im Netz erweitert. Kritiker bezweifeln becomes es bleibt umstritten, ob. Doing this at note stage means the finished summary is reformulated by construction rather than by editing.

  3. 03Choose a connective shape

Three points, three sentences, joined by a contrast and a concession: statement - response - doubt maps naturally onto Während ... , hat ... , Ob ... , bleibt jedoch umstritten. Signalling the relationship between the points is what distinguishes a summary from a list.

  4. 04Add one structure that shows range

Include at least one subordinate clause and one passive or comparative, since the AO3 descriptor rewards the ability to manipulate complex language accurately where the task requires it. Here the comparative deutlich seltener als and the indirect question ob ... genügt do that work without risking accuracy.

  5. 05Count, then trim from the decoration

Count the words. If you exceed 100, remove an adverb or a modifier - deutlich, jedoch, inzwischen are the first things to go - not a content point. A summary at 96 words containing all three points beats one at 120 containing all three, because only the first 100 are marked.

Exam focus

  • Plan the content points before writing; marking of a long summary stops at the first natural break between 90 and 100 words (AO1/AO2).
  • Reformulate rather than lift - lifted language earns no AO3 credit even when the content is right (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing 130 words in the belief that more content means more marks; the last third is not read.
  • Copying whole phrases from the passage into a summary, which can score full content marks and almost nothing for language.
