Die digitale Welt is the second sub-theme of Aspects of German-speaking society and carries three strands: Das Internet, Soziale Netzwerke and Die Digitalisierung der Gesellschaft. These notes cover the material a strong answer needs - internet access and the German debate about Breitbandausbau and Funklöcher, the vocabulary and the risks of social networks from Cybermobbing to Filterblase, the named legal framework of Datenschutz-Grundverordnung and Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz, and the wider digitalisation of work, school and administration - together with the two structures this sub-theme demands more than any other: the werden-passive, which is how German describes processes, and the compound noun, which is how German names them.

basic level
Die digitale Welt sits in Aspects of German-speaking society, so it is examinable at AS as well as at A-level. At the basic level, accurate description of how people use the internet and social networks, with correct present-tense and modal-verb usage, is the expectation.
higher level
The full A-Level expects named instruments - DSGVO, NetzDG, Digitalpakt Schule - to be used as evidence, opportunity and risk to be weighed rather than listed, and process claims to be carried by the werden-passive rather than by vague active sentences.

Translate into German: In rural regions the network is being expanded only slowly, although the government has promised fibre for everyone. Personal data is protected by European rules that have applied since 2018. Many users, however, accept the conditions without having read them.
The network is being expanded = das Netz wird ausgebaut. German has no separate progressive, so the present passive covers both is expanded and is being expanded. Ausbauen is separable, so the prefix stands at the end of the main clause: In ländlichen Regionen wird das Netz nur langsam ausgebaut. Because the adverbial phrase is fronted, the finite verb wird is the second element and das Netz follows it.
Obwohl die Regierung Glasfaser für alle versprochen hat. Obwohl sends the whole verb complex to the end, and in a perfect tense the auxiliary hat goes last of all, after the participle. That order - participle then auxiliary - is the single most reliable marker of a candidate who has understood German subordinate clauses.
Personal data is protected by European rules = personenbezogene Daten werden durch europäische Regeln geschützt. Use von for a personal agent and durch for a means or an impersonal instrument; a regulation is an instrument, so durch. Personenbezogene Daten is the exact legal term and worth using.
That have applied since 2018 = die seit 2018 gelten. The relative pronoun is plural nominative die because the rules are the subject of gelten; gelten sends to the end after seit 2018. And note seit plus PRESENT tense for something still true - gelten, not gegolten haben.
Ohne sie gelesen zu haben. The ohne ... zu construction is on the AS grammar list; with a completed action it takes the perfect infinitive gelesen zu haben, and the object sie stands first inside the construction. Viele Nutzer akzeptieren die Bedingungen jedoch, ohne sie gelesen zu haben - with jedoch placed inside the clause rather than at the front, which is the natural German position here.
Result: In ländlichen Regionen wird das Netz nur langsam ausgebaut, obwohl die Regierung Glasfaser für alle versprochen hat. Personenbezogene Daten werden durch europäische Regeln geschützt, die seit 2018 gelten. Viele Nutzer akzeptieren die Bedingungen jedoch, ohne sie gelesen zu haben.

In a Paper 1 listening passage a speaker says: „Ich habe nichts gegen soziale Netzwerke, wirklich nicht. Meine Tochter hält damit Kontakt zu ihren Freundinnen im Ausland, das ist ja auch schön. Nur frage ich mich manchmal, ob sie überhaupt noch merkt, wie viel Zeit dabei draufgeht." The question asks: „Welche Haltung vertritt die Sprecherin?" Work out the answer.
Ich habe nichts gegen ... , wirklich nicht is a disclaimer, and in German as in English a disclaimer usually precedes a criticism. Wirklich nicht is an intensifier that, paradoxically, signals the speaker expects to be doubted. Nothing in this sentence is her position.
Meine Tochter hält damit Kontakt zu ihren Freundinnen im Ausland - halten ... Kontakt is a fixed collocation, Kontakt halten zu plus dative. Das ist ja auch schön contains the modal particle ja, which appeals to shared agreement, and auch, which concedes. She is granting one genuine benefit before turning.
Nur frage ich mich manchmal is the hinge. Nur at the start of a clause means only or the thing is, and it triggers inversion - frage ich, not ich frage. Everything after it is the real content, exactly as aber es ist so, dass functions elsewhere.
Ob sie überhaupt noch merkt, wie viel Zeit dabei draufgeht is a doubled indirect question: ob introduces the first, wie viel the second, and both push their verbs to the end. Draufgehen is colloquial for to be used up or to go on something; Zeit geht drauf is time gets eaten. Überhaupt noch means at all any more, and carries the doubt.
Sie steht sozialen Netzwerken nicht grundsätzlich ablehnend gegenüber und erkennt an, dass ihre Tochter dadurch Kontakte pflegen kann. Sie äußert jedoch Zweifel, ob ihrer Tochter bewusst ist, wie viel Zeit sie dabei verliert. The question asks for the attitude, so the answer names the attitude; your own opinion of social media earns nothing here.

Ist zur Selbstverständlichkeit geworden is a perfect of werden with a zu plus dative complement: has become a matter of course, or has come to be taken for granted. Zur is zu plus der (dative feminine). Für viele is for many people. Note again that German uses the perfect where English uses a present perfect - here they happen to agree.
Wer heute eine Stelle sucht, erwartet ... is a headless relative: anyone who is looking for a job today expects ... . Wer at the start of a sentence is not the question word here; it introduces the clause whose verb sucht stands last, and the main clause then begins with its finite verb erwartet.
Dass zumindest ein Teil der Arbeit von zu Hause aus erledigt werden kann = that at least part of the work can be done from home. Erledigt werden kann is a modal plus passive infinitive, with the modal last because dass sends it there. Von zu Hause aus is the fixed phrase for from home; the aus is not optional in careful German.
Die Betriebe haben sich darauf einstellen müssen is a perfect of a modal verb, which in German produces a double infinitive: einstellen müssen rather than einstellen gemusst. It means firms have had to adapt to it. Sich einstellen auf plus accusative is to adjust to, and darauf is the prepositional adverb pointing back to the previous sentence.
Manche schneller, als ihnen lieb war is elliptical: some faster than they would have liked. Jemandem lieb sein means to be welcome to someone; the dative ihnen is the experiencer. Keep the ellipsis in English - the clipped phrase carries the dry tone of the original, and flattening it into a full clause loses the register.
Result: Since the pandemic, working from home has become a matter of course for many people. Anyone looking for a job today expects that at least part of the work can be done from home. Firms have had to adapt to this - some of them faster than they would have liked.

A candidate writes: Die Firmen sammeln unsere Daten. Dann verkaufen sie die Daten. Der Staat hat ein Gesetz gemacht. Aber viele Leute lesen die Bedingungen nicht. Rewrite it so that it reads as German written about a process rather than as a list of actors.
Four short main clauses, all active, all with a named subject, none subordinated. It is comprehensible but reads like a child's account: German prose about systems uses the passive, the impersonal man, and subordination to show relationships between statements.
Personenbezogene Daten werden in großem Umfang gesammelt und anschließend weiterverkauft. One sentence now carries both actions; the agent has disappeared because it is not the point; and weiterverkaufen with its prefix at the end shows separable-verb control.
Seit 2018 ist dieser Bereich durch die Datenschutz-Grundverordnung geregelt, die eine ausdrückliche Einwilligung verlangt. Der Staat hat ein Gesetz gemacht becomes a named regulation, a date, a sein-passive of state and a relative clause - four upgrades in one sentence.
In der Praxis wird die Einwilligung jedoch häufig erteilt, ohne dass die Bedingungen gelesen werden. Ohne dass plus a passive clause is the precise German for without the conditions being read, and in der Praxis flags that you are contrasting law with reality - an analytical move, not just a linguistic one.
Das führt dazu, dass der rechtliche Schutz zwar besteht, faktisch aber oft ins Leere läuft. Zwar ... aber inside a dass-clause, plus the idiom ins Leere laufen (to come to nothing), turns the paragraph into an argument with a conclusion.

Passage: A: „Ohne Handy geht bei uns im Betrieb gar nichts mehr, das muss man einfach akzeptieren." B: „Akzeptieren schon, aber ich möchte nach Feierabend nicht ständig erreichbar sein. Das ist ein Unterschied." Question: „Worin unterscheiden sich die beiden Sprecher?" Work out the answer.
Both accept that the phone is now unavoidable at work: A says das muss man einfach akzeptieren, and B opens with Akzeptieren schon, which grants exactly that. Comparison questions are built on shared ground plus one divergence, and finding the shared ground first prevents you from overstating the disagreement.
Akzeptieren schon is a concessive use of the modal particle schon: accept it, yes, but ... . German particles carry the argumentative structure of speech, and schon, doch, ja and eben are the four that matter most. Missing schon here would make B look like an opponent of the technology, which she is not.
B's objection is not to the device but to ständige Erreichbarkeit nach Feierabend - constant availability after the end of the working day. Feierabend is the end of the working day, not a party. The distinction she draws is between use at work and reachability outside it.
Das ist ein Unterschied is B telling you explicitly that she is drawing a distinction. Speakers in exam passages frequently signal their own structure - das ist etwas anderes, da muss man unterscheiden, das eine ist ..., das andere ... - and those signals are placed there to be heard.
Beide halten das Handy im Berufsleben für unverzichtbar. Sprecherin B verlangt jedoch eine Grenze nach Feierabend und lehnt die ständige Erreichbarkeit ab, während Sprecher A darauf nicht eingeht. The question asks how they differ, so the answer states the shared premise in one clause and spends the rest on the divergence.
Result: Beide akzeptieren, dass das Handy im Betrieb unverzichtbar geworden ist. Sprecherin B zieht jedoch eine Grenze beim Feierabend: Sie will nach Arbeitsschluss nicht ständig erreichbar sein und unterscheidet ausdrücklich zwischen der beruflichen Nutzung und der dauernden Erreichbarkeit, während Sprecher A diese Unterscheidung nicht trifft.
