The changing state of the family

Familie im Wandel is the first sub-theme of Aspects of German-speaking society and carries three strands: Beziehungen innerhalb der Familie, Partnerschaft und Ehe, and Verschiedene Familienformen. These notes cover what a strong answer needs - the vocabulary of family relationships and the generational conflict, the legal history of marriage and partnership in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the named family forms from the Kernfamilie to the Patchwork- and Regenbogenfamilie, and the policy vocabulary of Elterngeld, Elternzeit and the Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf - together with the grammar the sub-theme demands most: subordinate clauses with verb-final word order, the perfect for spoken narrative, and Konjunktiv II for the hypothetical claims that arguments about family life are made of.

basic level

Familie im Wandel belongs to Aspects of German-speaking society, the theme AS German (7661) shares with the A-level, so it is examinable on both. At the basic level, secure description of family relationships, of marriage and partnership and of the main family forms, in accurate present and perfect tense, is the expectation.

higher level

The full A-Level expects the description to become an argument: change explained by named causes, legal and policy instruments cited accurately, at least one German-speaking country other than Germany brought in, and hypothetical claims carried by Konjunktiv II rather than asserted flat.

Key points

Start from what has actually changed inside the household, because that is the analytical spine of the whole sub-theme. The authoritarian family of the mid-twentieth century, in which der Vater das letzte Wort hatte, has given way over three generations to what German sociologists call den Verhandlungshaushalt - a household in which decisions are negotiated rather than issued. The useful German for this shift is precise: früher wurde befohlen, heute wird verhandelt; die Erziehung ist partnerschaftlicher geworden; Kinder werden eher als Gesprächspartner denn als Befehlsempfänger behandelt. Notice that all three of those sentences carry a passive or a comparative, which is exactly the grammar this strand rewards.
The Generationenkonflikt is the classic exam topic within the strand, and the mark is in the causes, not the complaint. Name them: unterschiedliche Wertvorstellungen (different values), der Medienkonsum und die Bildschirmzeit, die Schulleistungen und der Leistungsdruck, die Frage nach Freiheit und Grenzen, and - increasingly - politische Meinungsverschiedenheiten, particularly over climate policy and migration. The verbs of conflict are worth drilling because they are mostly reflexive or separable: sich streiten über (plus accusative), aneinandergeraten, sich durchsetzen, nachgeben, einen Kompromiss schließen, sich versöhnen. Say es kommt häufig zu Konflikten, weil die Eltern die digitale Welt ihrer Kinder nicht mehr überblicken - and note the verb-final überblicken after weil.
Two further relationships deserve their own vocabulary because examiners set passages on them. The first is the Geschwisterbeziehung: die Rivalität unter Geschwistern, das Einzelkind, der Altersunterschied, die Rollenverteilung. The second is the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, which in German-speaking countries carries real social weight: Großeltern übernehmen häufig einen Teil der Kinderbetreuung, and the noun for that is die Betreuung. Because life expectancy has risen, more children now know their grandparents into adulthood than any earlier generation - a genuinely useful observation that costs nothing in invented statistics: immer mehr Kinder wachsen mit lebenden Großeltern auf, was vor hundert Jahren die Ausnahme war.
Finally, the pressure that runs underneath everything in this strand: die Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf, the compatibility of family and work. This is the single most useful phrase in the sub-theme and it should be in every essay. Around it sit die Doppelbelastung (the double burden, still carried disproportionately by women), die Teilzeitarbeit, das Homeoffice, die Betreuungslücke between the end of the school day and the end of the working day, and - the German that impresses - die ungleiche Verteilung der Sorgearbeit, the unequal distribution of care work. A sentence such as solange die Sorgearbeit ungleich verteilt bleibt, wird sich an der Doppelbelastung wenig ändern gives you a subordinate clause, a future tense and an argued claim in one breath.
Worked example

Translation into English: a passage on the negotiating household

Translate into English: „Meine Großmutter hat mir einmal erzählt, dass bei ihr zu Hause niemand widersprochen habe. Heute diskutieren wir am Küchentisch über alles - über die Bildschirmzeit, über das Taschengeld, sogar über die Politik. Manchmal geraten wir aneinander, aber ich glaube, dass wir uns dadurch besser verstehen als frühere Generationen."

  1. 01Unpack the reported speech in the first sentence

Hat mir einmal erzählt is a perfect tense used, as German conversation normally does, where English uses a simple past: once told me. The dass-clause carries widersprochen habe - a Konjunktiv I perfect, the standard marker of reported speech. English does not have that form, so it must be rendered by ordinary reported speech: that nobody at her house ever answered back. Do not add allegedly; the Konjunktiv here is grammatical convention, not doubt.

  2. 02Handle bei ihr zu Hause

Bei plus a dative pronoun means at someone's home; bei ihr zu Hause is at her home or in her house. It is not by her. Widersprechen takes the dative and means to contradict or to answer back; niemand widersprach is nobody contradicted anyone.

  3. 03Keep the anaphora of the second sentence

Über alles - über die Bildschirmzeit, über das Taschengeld, sogar über die Politik repeats the preposition deliberately. English tolerates the same repetition: about everything - about screen time, about pocket money, even about politics. Diskutieren über plus accusative is to discuss; am Küchentisch is at the kitchen table.

  4. 04Recognise the separable verb aneinandergeraten

Wir geraten aneinander splits into geraten plus the prefix aneinander and means we clash or we fall out. This is exactly the kind of separable verb that is invisible if you only see geraten; scan the end of the clause for the prefix before you translate the verb.

  5. 05Render dadurch and the comparative

Dadurch means by that means or as a result of it. Uns besser verstehen als frühere Generationen is a reflexive plus comparative: understand each other better than earlier generations did. English usually adds the auxiliary did to complete the comparison; German leaves it out.

Result: My grandmother once told me that at her home nobody ever answered back. Today we discuss everything at the kitchen table - screen time, pocket money, even politics. Sometimes we clash, but I think it means we understand each other better than earlier generations did.

Exam focus

  • Explain the shift from Befehl to Verhandlung inside the family with named causes, rather than describing arguments (AO4).
  • Use verb-final word order after weil, obwohl and dass every single time; this strand generates subordinate clauses constantly (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing weil die Eltern verstehen nicht - after weil the finite verb must stand last: weil die Eltern es nicht verstehen.
  • Using die Verwandten to mean the immediate family; die Verwandten are relatives more broadly, while die Familie or die Angehörigen is what you usually want.

Partnership and marriage: Partnerschaft und Ehe#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7662 3.1.1 - Familie im Wandel: Partnerschaft und EheLPDfE GCE modern foreign languages subject content

Key points

The legal history is short enough to learn exactly and precise enough to lift an answer out of generality. In Germany, the Lebenspartnerschaftsgesetz of 2001 created die eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaft for same-sex couples, a status that carried many but not all of the rights of marriage. On 30 June 2017 the Bundestag voted to open marriage itself, and die Ehe für alle came into force on 1 October 2017; from that date no new Lebenspartnerschaften could be registered, and existing ones could be converted into a marriage. In Austria, eingetragene Partnerschaften became possible in 2010, and marriage was opened to same-sex couples from 1 January 2019 following a ruling of the Verfassungsgerichtshof in December 2017. In Switzerland, die Ehe für alle was approved in a referendum on 26 September 2021 and took effect on 1 July 2022. Three countries, three routes - parliament, court, referendum - and that contrast is itself an argument worth making.
Alongside marriage sit the alternatives, and German names them precisely, which English often does not. Die nichteheliche Lebensgemeinschaft is an unmarried couple living together; zusammenleben ohne Trauschein is the idiomatic way to say living together without the paperwork, and der Trauschein - the marriage certificate - is the word that carries the whole debate. Die Lebensabschnittspartnerschaft, literally a partnership for a phase of life, is used half-ironically for relationships that are not intended to be permanent. Getting engaged is sich verloben (die Verlobung), the wedding is die Hochzeit, and the legally binding act is die standesamtliche Trauung at the Standesamt, distinct from die kirchliche Trauung, which in German-speaking countries has no legal force on its own.
Divorce needs its own block of language and one crucial legal fact. Sich scheiden lassen is the verb - reflexive, with lassen, so wir haben uns scheiden lassen, not wir haben geschieden. German divorce law requires das Trennungsjahr, a year of living apart, before a divorce is normally granted, and the guiding principle is das Zerrüttungsprinzip: the marriage is dissolved because it has broken down, not because one party is at fault. Around that sit das Sorgerecht (custody), das Umgangsrecht (contact), der Unterhalt (maintenance) and der Ehevertrag (prenuptial agreement). A candidate who writes in Deutschland gilt seit der Reform von 1977 das Zerrüttungsprinzip, das heißt, die Schuldfrage spielt keine Rolle mehr has said something both accurate and analytical.
Now the argument, because AO4 rewards judgement rather than inventory. The standard exam question asks whether marriage still matters. The strong answer refuses both easy positions. On one side: die Ehe verliert an Verbindlichkeit, die Zahl der Eheschließungen ist langfristig zurückgegangen, und viele Paare leben unverheiratet zusammen. On the other: die Ehe wird nach wie vor angestrebt, sie bietet rechtliche Sicherheit - etwa beim Erbrecht, beim Ehegattensplitting und bei der Krankenversicherung - und ihre Öffnung für gleichgeschlechtliche Paare zeigt, dass sie als Institution begehrt bleibt. The conclusion writes itself: die Ehe hat ihre Selbstverständlichkeit verloren, aber nicht ihre Anziehungskraft - she has lost her obviousness, not her attraction.
Worked example

Translation into German: every grammatical decision justified

Translate into German: Since 2017 same-sex couples in Germany have been allowed to marry. Many young people say that they would marry if they found the right partner, although marriage no longer seems necessary to them. Experts point out that the number of weddings has fallen, but that marriage still offers legal security.

  1. 01Seit plus present tense, not perfect

Since 2017 ... have been allowed describes something still true, so German uses seit plus the PRESENT: seit 2017 dürfen gleichgeschlechtliche Paare in Deutschland heiraten. Writing haben dürfen here is the single most common error in this sentence. Seit takes the dative, but with a bare year no article appears.

  2. 02Choose the adjective ending in gleichgeschlechtliche Paare

Plural nominative with no determiner takes the STRONG ending -e: gleichgeschlechtliche Paare. If you insert die, the ending becomes weak - die gleichgeschlechtlichen Paare. Deciding determiner first, ending second, is the reliable order of operations.

  3. 03Build the Konjunktiv II conditional

They would marry if they found the right partner is hypothetical, so both halves take Konjunktiv II: sie würden heiraten, wenn sie den richtigen Partner fänden. Den richtigen Partner is accusative masculine after finden, with the weak ending -en after den. Fänden is the Konjunktiv II of finden; würden finden is acceptable but the simple form is better style and shows control.

  4. 04Handle the concessive and the dative of opinion

Although marriage no longer seems necessary to them = obwohl ihnen die Ehe nicht mehr notwendig erscheint. Erscheinen takes a dative person, so ihnen; obwohl sends erscheint to the end. Note nicht mehr for no longer, placed before the predicate adjective.

  5. 05Coordinate two dass-clauses after darauf hinweisen

Experts point out that ... but that ... = Fachleute weisen darauf hin, dass die Zahl der Eheschließungen zurückgegangen ist, dass die Ehe aber nach wie vor rechtliche Sicherheit bietet. Hinweisen auf is separable and needs the prepositional adverb darauf to anticipate the dass-clause - an A-level grammar-list item. In the second clause aber sits inside the clause because dass already occupies first position.

Result: Seit 2017 dürfen gleichgeschlechtliche Paare in Deutschland heiraten. Viele junge Leute sagen, sie würden heiraten, wenn sie den richtigen Partner fänden, obwohl ihnen die Ehe nicht mehr notwendig erscheint. Fachleute weisen darauf hin, dass die Zahl der Eheschließungen zurückgegangen ist, dass die Ehe aber nach wie vor rechtliche Sicherheit bietet.

Exam focus

  • Cite the three routes to same-sex marriage - German parliament 2017, Austrian court 2019, Swiss referendum 2022 - to show knowledge beyond Germany (AO4).
  • Use sich scheiden lassen and sich verloben correctly as reflexive verbs; both are commonly mishandled (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing sie haben geschieden for they got divorced; the German is sie haben sich scheiden lassen.
  • Treating die Ehe für alle as one event across the German-speaking world; the three countries legislated separately, by different routes and in different years.

Fig. 1The branches are the vocabulary the strand is named after. Each defining phrase is one clause long on purpose: that is the length an examiner expects when a form is named in an essay.

Key points

Learn the names, because the strand is called Verschiedene Familienformen and an answer that cannot name the forms cannot discuss them. Die Kernfamilie is parents and children in one household. Die Großfamilie or Mehrgenerationenfamilie spans three generations. Die Ein-Eltern-Familie is the single-parent family, and the adjective is alleinerziehend - eine alleinerziehende Mutter, ein alleinerziehender Vater. Die Patchworkfamilie brings together children from previous relationships. Die Regenbogenfamilie has same-sex parents. Die Pflegefamilie fosters; adoption is die Adoption. And a growing group is simply kinderlos, whether gewollt or ungewollt. Add die Wahlverwandtschaft - the chosen family of close friends - if you want a term that few candidates know.
Explain why the picture has diversified, because causes are where AO4 marks live. Four stand up to scrutiny: rechtliche Gleichstellung, since forms that were once informal or forbidden are now recognised; wirtschaftliche Unabhängigkeit der Frauen, which made leaving an unhappy marriage materially possible; die höhere Lebenserwartung, which lengthens the period after the children have left; and die gestiegene Mobilität, since work moves families apart and thins the everyday support of relatives. Notice that these are structural explanations, not moral ones, and that is exactly the register the specification wants: die Vielfalt der Familienformen ist weniger ein Zeichen des Verfalls als eine Folge rechtlicher und wirtschaftlicher Veränderungen.
Policy is the concrete detail that turns generalities into evidence, and German family policy is unusually nameable. Das Elterngeld, introduced in 2007, replaces part of the income of a parent who stops working after a birth; ElterngeldPlus, added in 2015, extends the period for parents working part-time. Die Elternzeit allows parents to take leave from work and return to their job. Since 1 August 2013 a child in Germany has had a legal entitlement - ein Rechtsanspruch - to a place in childcare from the age of one, which is why die Kita and die Betreuungsplätze are permanent items in the German political debate. Das Kindergeld is paid for each child; the amount is adjusted periodically, so cite the instrument and not a figure.
Finally, handle the demographic background honestly, since it is the one place candidates habitually invent numbers. What is well established: the birth rate in German-speaking countries has been below the replacement level for decades, the average age at which people marry and have a first child has risen substantially, single-person households have become far more common, and the population is ageing. What you should not do is attach a precise percentage you cannot source. The honest German for this is standard journalistic register and examiners recognise it: laut offiziellen Angaben, Schätzungen zufolge, die Zahlen des Statistischen Bundesamtes zeigen einen langfristigen Trend, tendenziell. One hedged, accurate sentence outranks three confident invented ones.
Worked example

The Paper 1 summary: 90 to 100 words in German

A reading text reports that childcare places have expanded since the legal entitlement of 2013, that parents in rural areas still struggle to find places, and that fathers now take parental leave far more often than before but usually only for two months. Write the summary in your own words.

  1. 01Know the rule before you write

The specification says marking of a long summary stops at the first natural break between 90 and 100 words, and that lifted language earns no AO3 credit. So the target is roughly 95 words, in full sentences, in your own words. Content is marked under AO2 for a reading summary and language separately under AO3.

  2. 02Extract the three content points, not the decoration

Point one: expansion of provision since the 2013 entitlement. Point two: a continuing gap in rural areas. Point three: fathers take leave more often but briefly. Anything else in the passage - examples, quotations, an individual's story - is illustration and does not earn a content mark.

  3. 03Reformulate rather than lift

If the text says der Rechtsanspruch auf einen Betreuungsplatz, write seit dem gesetzlichen Anspruch von 2013. If it says Väter nehmen Elternzeit, write immer mehr Väter unterbrechen ihre Berufstätigkeit. Reformulation is where the AO3 marks are, and it is a skill you can drill by rewriting any German sentence twice.

  4. 04Give the summary a shape

Three sentences, one per point, with a linking adverb: Zunächst ... Allerdings ... Zugleich ... . A summary that shows the relationship between the points reads as understanding; a list of three unlinked sentences reads as transcription.

  5. 05Count and stop

Count the words. If you are at 105, delete an adjective, not a content point. If you are at 80, add a subordinate clause to an existing point rather than inventing a fourth - marks come from the points that are there, and short summaries are self-penalising because they cannot contain everything required.

Exam focus

  • Name at least four family forms in German and define each in one clause; naming is the credit-bearing act in this strand (AO4).
  • Attribute demographic claims (laut offiziellen Angaben, Schätzungen zufolge) instead of quoting invented percentages (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Using alleinstehend for a single parent; alleinstehend means unattached, whereas the parent raising a child alone is alleinerziehend.
  • Calling every reconstituted household eine Patchworkfamilie without saying what makes it one - children from previous relationships living together.

Active revision

Beschreibe auf Deutsch in etwa 140 Wörtern vier verschiedene Familienformen und nenne für jede einen Grund, warum sie heute häufiger vorkommt als vor fünfzig Jahren.

§ 04

Wortschatz und Wendungen: writing about the family with precision#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7662 3.1.1 - Familie im WandelLPAQA 7662 3.3 Grammar

Key points

The lexical field, in blocks you can actually memorise. Watch two traps: das Verhältnis is a relationship in the abstract sense and takes zu plus dative (mein Verhältnis zu meinem Vater), while die Beziehung is the concrete relationship or romantic partnership; and die Eltern is plural only - one parent is ein Elternteil.
The grammar this sub-theme rewards is subordination, because almost every claim about family life needs a because or an although. Drill the three that appear most: weil for cause, obwohl for concession, and dass after verbs of saying and thinking - all three send the finite verb to the end. Then add the two that let you sound analytical: sodass for consequence (die Wege sind lang, sodass viele Eltern auf einen Platz verzichten) and während for contrast (während die Mütter Teilzeit arbeiten, bleiben die Väter meist in Vollzeit). And remember the rule that trips everyone: when a subordinate clause comes first, the main clause begins with its verb - Obwohl sie berufstätig ist, übernimmt sie den größten Teil der Hausarbeit.
Build a bank of Wendungen - fixed turns of phrase - because they are what makes German sound German rather than translated. For description: Immer mehr Menschen entscheiden sich dafür, ...; Es lässt sich beobachten, dass ...; Die Zahl der ... ist stetig gestiegen. For argument: Einerseits ..., andererseits ...; Zwar ..., aber ...; Das liegt vor allem daran, dass ...; Hinzu kommt, dass ... . For judgement: Meiner Ansicht nach ...; Ich halte es für problematisch, wenn ...; Letztlich kommt es darauf an, ob ... . Learn each with its word order attached, since Zwar and Hinzu kommt both invert, and dafür, dass and darauf, dass are the prepositional adverbs that carry the following clause.
Finally, register. This sub-theme tempts candidates into the language of the school essay - meine Familie ist sehr nett und wir machen viel zusammen - which cannot access the top bands however accurate it is. Lift it by generalising from your example rather than staying inside it, and by preferring the abstract noun to the adjective: not sie ist sehr gestresst but sie steht unter erheblichem Zeitdruck; not es ist schwierig für Mütter but die Doppelbelastung trifft Mütter überproportional. Two other quick wins: use man or the passive to make claims about society (in vielen Familien wird die Sorgearbeit ungleich verteilt), and avoid the anglicism ich denke that - German is ich denke, dass, with a comma and verb-final clause.
Worked example

From school essay to A-level German: repairing a candidate paragraph

A candidate writes: Meine Familie ist sehr wichtig für mich. Meine Mutter arbeitet viel und ist oft müde. Ich denke das Familie ist gut. Heute gibt es viele Scheidungen und das ist traurig. Rewrite it to A-level standard and justify each change.

  1. 01Diagnose the failures

Four problems, only one of them grammatical. The register is personal rather than analytical; the claims are unexplained; ich denke das is a missing comma plus the wrong word (dass, not das); and und das ist traurig replaces analysis with an emotional label. None of it can earn AO4 credit.

  2. 02Fix the hard grammatical error first

Ich denke, dass die Familie nach wie vor eine zentrale Rolle spielt. The conjunction is dass with a double s; das with one s is the article or a relative pronoun. The comma before it is obligatory in German, and spielt goes to the end.

  3. 03Turn the personal observation into a societal claim

Meine Mutter arbeitet viel und ist oft müde becomes Viele Mütter stehen unter erheblichem Zeitdruck, weil die Sorgearbeit weiterhin ungleich verteilt ist. The individual disappears, the abstract noun and the causal clause arrive, and the sentence is now arguable.

  4. 04Replace the emotional label with an explanation

Heute gibt es viele Scheidungen und das ist traurig becomes Die Zahl der Scheidungen ist im langfristigen Vergleich hoch, was sich unter anderem durch die wirtschaftliche Unabhängigkeit der Frauen und durch die veränderten Erwartungen an eine Partnerschaft erklären lässt. Note the relative pronoun was referring back to a whole clause, and sich erklären lassen - an infinitive construction with lassen from the AS grammar list.

  5. 05Close with a qualified judgement

Daraus folgt jedoch nicht, dass die Familie an Bedeutung verliert; sie nimmt lediglich andere Formen an. Conceding the obvious counter-reading and then narrowing your claim is precisely what critical response means, and lediglich is a useful marker of that narrowing.

Exam focus

  • Use Zwar ..., aber ... and Einerseits ..., andererseits ... to structure a balanced paragraph; both are high-value AO3 structures (AO3).
  • Prefer abstract nouns - die Doppelbelastung, die Sorgearbeit, die Vereinbarkeit - over strings of adjectives (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Confusing das Verhältnis (abstract relationship, with zu plus dative) and die Beziehung (concrete relationship or partnership).
  • Forgetting the inversion after a fronted subordinate clause: Obwohl sie arbeitet, sie übernimmt ... is wrong; it must be Obwohl sie arbeitet, übernimmt sie ... .

§ 05

In der Prüfung: the family sub-theme in Papers 1 and 3#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7662 4.4 Paper 1 - Listening, reading and writingLPAQA 7662 4.6 Paper 3 - Speaking, part one

Key points

Family is the sub-theme most likely to open the listening paper, because it needs no specialist knowledge - which means the questions compensate by testing inference. Expect a speaker whose position has to be worked out rather than heard. Train three recognitions. The concessive opener: Natürlich ist die Familie wichtig, aber ... - everything after aber is the actual position. The impersonal generalisation: man kann heute nicht mehr erwarten, dass ..., which converts a personal grievance into a supposed rule. And the understatement, which German uses heavily: es ist nicht ganz einfach means it is very difficult, and nicht gerade begeistert means distinctly unimpressed.
In the reading paper the family texts are usually either journalistic or literary, and the literary ones are where candidates lose marks. A literary extract may use the Präteritum throughout, may leave the subject implicit across a sequence of clauses, and will certainly use word order for emphasis. Two habits protect you. First, find the finite verb before you decide what the sentence means - in a subordinate clause it is the last word, and in a main clause it is the second element even when the first element is a long adverbial. Second, when a sentence begins with something other than the subject, ask what is being emphasised; German fronts the element it wants to stress, and inference questions are often built on exactly that choice.
For the speaking test, prepare a factual spine so that you are never reduced to opinion. Have ready: the 2017, 2019 and 2022 dates for marriage equality in Germany, Austria and Switzerland; das Trennungsjahr and das Zerrüttungsprinzip; Elterngeld from 2007 and the childcare entitlement from 2013; and four named family forms with a one-clause definition each. That is perhaps ninety seconds of material, and it converts every card on this sub-theme from an opinion exchange into an informed discussion.
Finally, rehearse the part of the card that candidates most often forget: you must ask the examiner two questions. They must arise from the material on the card, must seek information or an opinion, and must contain a conjugated verb; asking for repetition or clarification does not count, and neither does rephrasing one of the printed questions. If you ask only one, the AO2 mark is capped at 4 out of 5; if you ask none, at 3. Prepare two portable frames that work on any family card and adapt them to the card's own wording: Sie sehen auf dem Bild eine Patchworkfamilie - halten Sie diese Familienform für die Familie der Zukunft? and Was halten Sie persönlich davon, dass immer mehr Väter Elternzeit nehmen? Both are conjugated, both seek an opinion, both are anchored in the card.
Worked example

Answering a stimulus card on family forms in Part one

The card shows a photograph of a single father with two children and carries the printed statistic that the number of single-parent households has risen over recent decades. The examiner asks: „Warum gibt es heute mehr Ein-Eltern-Familien als früher?" Build an answer of about fifty seconds.

  1. 01Open by anchoring in the card

Auf der Karte sieht man einen alleinerziehenden Vater, und die Zahl im Text bestätigt einen langfristigen Trend. Referring explicitly to the material earns AO2, which is awarded for understanding the card - a candidate who ignores the card and answers from memory loses those marks even if the German is excellent.

  2. 02Give two structural causes, not a list of five

Zum einen ist die wirtschaftliche Unabhängigkeit der Frauen gewachsen, sodass eine Trennung finanziell überhaupt möglich geworden ist. Zum anderen hat sich das Scheidungsrecht verändert: Seit der Reform gilt das Zerrüttungsprinzip, die Schuldfrage spielt also keine Rolle mehr. Two developed causes always beat five named ones.

  3. 03Add the detail only a prepared candidate has

Hinzu kommt, dass alleinerziehende Eltern - meist Mütter - besonders auf Betreuungsplätze angewiesen sind, weshalb der Rechtsanspruch von 2013 für sie so wichtig war. A date and a named instrument in the middle of a spoken answer is the clearest evidence of AO4 knowledge there is.

  4. 04Qualify, because unqualified answers cap out

Allerdings darf man daraus nicht schließen, dass die Ein-Eltern-Familie automatisch ein Problem darstellt; entscheidend ist eher, ob genügend Unterstützung vorhanden ist. Naming the objection to your own answer is what the AO4 descriptor calls evaluation.

  5. 05Hand back with a question

End your turn by using one of your two required questions while the topic is live: Und wie beurteilen Sie das - erhalten Alleinerziehende in Deutschland genug Unterstützung? It is conjugated, it seeks an opinion, and it arises from the card.

Exam focus

  • Locate the finite verb before translating or answering; verb-second and verb-final are the two anchors of every German sentence (AO2).
  • Ask two card-based questions containing a conjugated verb, or lose up to two AO2 marks automatically (AO2).

Typical mistakes

  • Treating aber, allerdings and jedoch as decoration; in German they mark the sentence where the speaker's real position begins.
  • Asking Können Sie das wiederholen? as one of your two questions - the specification explicitly excludes requests for repetition or clarification.
