উৎসব ও ঐতিহ্য: Bengali festivals and traditions

This topic is sub-theme 3.2.1.1 of AQA 7637, Bengali festivals and traditions, inside theme 3.2.1, Artistic culture in the Bengali-speaking world past and present. Its three bullet aspects are roots and origins, regional diversity, and social and economic importance, and each of the five sections below states which it serves. The platform's topic id is artistic-culture-1. Two things make this the most rewarding thematic topic in the specification and also the easiest to write badly. The first is that the Bengali festive year is genuinely double: it runs on a solar agricultural calendar of its own, the Bengali era, and simultaneously on the Islamic lunar calendar and the Hindu ritual calendar, so that the same twelve months carry several different kinds of occasion for several different communities in two different countries. The second is that festivals invite description, and description alone earns very little. The exam technique this topic carries is the AO4 ladder: the deliberate move from describing a festival to making a cultural claim that the evidence you have actually supports. Every festival named here is named with the community, the country and, where one exists, the dated institutional fact - a UNESCO inscription, a calendar reform, a founding date - that turns an impression into evidence.

basic level

In the first year, learn the calendar: the twelve Bengali months, the six seasons, and where the major occasions sit in them. Learn to describe one festival fully in Bengali - what happens, who does it, what is eaten, what is worn, what is said - because a full description of one is worth more than a thin gesture at ten. Follow a Bengali news site through a festival season and collect the words it uses.

higher level

The full A-Level expects you to explain rather than describe: why a festival takes the form it does, what its economics are, who is included and excluded, and how it has changed. It also expects you to distinguish the standard historical account of an origin from the evidence for it, because the origins of several of these traditions are argued about by historians and a confident sentence about Akbar is not the same as a true one.

●○○FoundationLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Bengali festivals and traditions - Roots and originsLPAQA 7637 - 3.3.12 Common variations in Bengali spelling: Bengali calendar

Key points

The Bengali year has its own era, the বঙ্গাব্দ, whose number runs a little under six hundred behind the Common Era year, and its twelve months are the frame on which most of the festive year hangs: বৈশাখ, জ্যৈষ্ঠ, আষাঢ়, শ্রাবণ, ভাদ্র, আশ্বিন, কার্তিক, অগ্রহায়ণ, পৌষ, মাঘ, ফাল্গুন, চৈত্র. Those twelve are grouped not into four seasons but into six, the ষড়ঋতু, each of two months: গ্রীষ্ম the hot season, বর্ষা the monsoon, শরৎ the clear early autumn, হেমন্ত the late autumn of harvest, শীত the winter, and বসন্ত the spring. This six-season division is not a poetic conceit; it corresponds to a real agricultural and hydrological year in a delta, and it is why so much Bengali poetry and song is organised by season. The Bengali calendar is named explicitly in section 3.3.12 of the specification, which means it is examinable grammar content as well as cultural content.
The standard account of the calendar's origin attributes its establishment to the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century, as a way of aligning the Islamic lunar calendar used for administration with the solar agricultural year on which revenue actually depended, so that revenue could be collected after the harvest rather than at a date that drifted through the seasons. That account is the one usually given and it is worth knowing in exactly that form - as the standard account. Historians have argued about the details, including how much was new and how much was continuous with earlier local eras. The distinction matters for your marks as much as for your accuracy: প্রচলিত মত অনুযায়ী, according to the accepted view, is a phrase that costs three words and converts an assertion into a properly attributed claim.
The calendar is not identical in the two countries, and this is a clean example of the two-polity discipline this subject requires. Bangladesh adopted a reformed reckoning: a revision proposed by a committee under the linguist Muhammad Shahidullah in the 1960s was officially adopted in Bangladesh in 1987, fixing the lengths of the months and placing পহেলা বৈশাখ, the first day of the year, on 14 April; a further adjustment in 2019 aligned certain national commemorations with their Gregorian dates. West Bengal has continued with the traditional astronomical reckoning, in which the new year falls on 14 or 15 April depending on the year. So the same festival can fall on different days on the two sides of the border, and a candidate who says the Bengali new year is on 14 April has told half the story.
The vocabulary of the calendar is worth learning as a block because it appears in reading texts, in song lyrics and in the dating of documents: বঙ্গাব্দ, the Bengali era; পঞ্জিকা, the almanac; ঋতু, season; মাস, month; পয়লা or পহেলা, the first day; সংক্রান্তি, the last day of a month; নববর্ষ and বর্ষবরণ, new year and welcoming the year; শুভ নববর্ষ, the new-year greeting. Dates take the ordinal-day suffixes described in the grammar topic: ১লা বৈশাখ, ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি, ২৬শে মার্চ. And because the two calendars run together, a Bengali sentence may legitimately carry both - ১৯৫২ সালের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি, ৮ই ফাল্গুন ১৩৫৮ - which is the standard way the date of the Language Movement is written.
Worked example

Climbing the AO4 ladder: from description to a claim you can support

You have written the sentence বাংলাদেশে ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গে অনেক উৎসব হয়. Climb from there to a sentence that would earn credit on the AO4 grid, one rung at a time.

  1. 01Rung one: description

বাংলাদেশে ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গে অনেক উৎসব হয়। Many festivals happen. True, unfalsifiable and worth nothing: it could be written by someone who had never opened a book on the subject.

  2. 02Rung two: specific description

বাংলা বছরের শুরুতে পহেলা বৈশাখ, শরতে দুর্গাপূজা এবং চান্দ্র বর্ষপঞ্জি অনুযায়ী দুটি ঈদ পালিত হয়। Now three named occasions with their positions in two calendars. Still description, but description an examiner can see is informed.

  3. 03Rung three: a pattern

    লক্ষণীয় যে উৎসবগুলো একটি নয়, বরং তিনটি ভিন্ন পঞ্জিকা মেনে চলে - সৌর বাংলা সন, চান্দ্র হিজরি সন এবং হিন্দু তিথি। It is notable that the festivals follow not one calendar but three. This is a claim: it can be checked and it could be wrong.

  4. 04Rung four: a consequence

ফলে ঈদের তারিখ প্রতি বছর সরে আসে, আর পহেলা বৈশাখ স্থির থাকে; এই পার্থক্যই বাজার, ছুটি ও পরিবহনের চাপ নির্ধারণ করে। As a result Eid moves each year while Pahela Boishakh does not, and that difference is what determines retail, holidays and transport pressure. Now the claim does work.

  5. 05Rung five: an evaluation with a limit

আমার মতে, এই বহু-পঞ্জিকা কাঠামোই বাঙালি উৎসব-জীবনের প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য; তবে এর অর্থ এই নয় যে সব সম্প্রদায় সব উৎসব সমানভাবে পালন করে। In my view this multi-calendar structure is the defining feature of Bengali festive life, though that does not mean every community observes every festival equally. A judgement, marked as a judgement, with its own limit stated.

  6. 06Notice what changed

Nothing was added that a well-read student would not know. The ladder is not about knowing more; it is about doing something with what you know - naming, patterning, consequence, judgement. The AO4 descriptors ask for relevant information selected to support arguments and evidence used to justify conclusions, and rungs three to five are exactly that.

Result: The finished sentence pair: লক্ষণীয় যে উৎসবগুলো একটি নয়, বরং তিনটি ভিন্ন পঞ্জিকা মেনে চলে; ফলে ঈদের তারিখ প্রতি বছর সরে আসে, আর পহেলা বৈশাখ স্থির থাকে, এবং এই পার্থক্যই বাজার, ছুটি ও পরিবহনের চাপ নির্ধারণ করে। Practise the ladder on every festival you learn: name, pattern, consequence, judgement, limit.

Exam focus

  • The twelve months and six seasons are cheap, precise, examinable knowledge that a stimulus text may assume.
  • Say according to the accepted view when giving the Akbar origin; the details are argued about by historians.
  • The 1987 Bangladeshi reform and the traditional West Bengal reckoning give different new-year dates. Name which you mean.
  • The double dating of 21 February 1952 in both calendars is worth memorising: it appears constantly in Bangladeshi writing.

Typical mistakes

  • Giving four seasons instead of six, on the European pattern.
  • Stating the Akbar origin as an established fact with no attribution.
  • Assuming Pahela Boishakh falls on the same day in Dhaka and Kolkata.
  • Writing the era year as though it were a Gregorian year, or mixing Bengali and Western digits within one date.
  • Treating the calendar as decorative. It is named in the grammar list, which means it can be tested as language.

Key points

পহেলা বৈশাখ is the one occasion in the Bengali year that belongs to the language rather than to a religion, and that fact is the whole of its cultural significance. It is marked by Bengali speakers of every community in both countries, and its observance has for that reason carried a political charge: in Bangladesh in particular, the modern public celebration grew alongside the assertion of Bengali cultural identity in the decades before independence. Two elements of the Dhaka observance are documented with dates and are worth naming. The dawn concert at Ramna, held by the cultural organisation Chhayanaut, has been held annually since 1967 and opens with Tagore's song welcoming the month. And the মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা, the procession of large papier-mache figures organised from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka, was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.
The commercial half of the new year is as old as the calendar's purpose and is called হালখাতা. Traders close the old account book and open a new one; customers are invited in to settle what they owe and are given sweets; the ledger is begun afresh, often with a ritual first entry. This is not a quaint survival - it is the direct descendant of the revenue-year logic that the standard account gives for the calendar's creation, and it is still practised in markets in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. Alongside it, the new year has become the year's second retail peak after the festival seasons, with a distinctive dress code of white and red, a food repertoire of পান্তা ভাত and ইলিশ in the Dhaka observance, and a fair-and-procession tradition, the বৈশাখী মেলা, in towns across both countries.
Two harvest occasions complete the agricultural half of the year and are frequently set in reading texts because they are so concretely describable. নবান্ন, literally new rice, marks the arrival of the aman harvest in the month of অগ্রহায়ণ and is celebrated with the first rice of the season, with পিঠা and with village fairs; it is observed in rural areas of both countries and has in recent decades been revived as an urban cultural festival in Dhaka and Kolkata. পৌষ সংক্রান্তি, the last day of the month of পৌষ in mid-January, is the winter cake festival: households make পিঠা of many named kinds with rice flour, coconut and খেজুরের গুড়, date-palm jaggery, and in Dhaka the day is also marked by the kite festival known as সাকরাইন. Naming a specific পিঠা or a specific practice is exactly the kind of detail an AO4 grid calls relevant information.
The vocabulary of a festive description is worth having ready as a set, because a listening passage will use it fast and a writing task needs it precise: বর্ষবরণ, welcoming the year; শোভাযাত্রা, procession; মেলা, fair; মঞ্চ, stage; আয়োজন, the arrangement or event; আয়োজক, organiser; ভিড়, crowd; সাজসজ্জা, decoration; খাবারের দোকান, food stall; নাচ ও গান, dance and song; ঐতিহ্যবাহী, traditional; উদযাপন করা, to celebrate; পালন করা, to observe. Note the difference between the last two: উদযাপন is festive celebration, পালন is observance including of solemn days, so ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি পালন করা হয় is right and উদযাপন করা হয় would be wrong for a day of mourning.
Worked example

A summary built from a cultural stimulus text

A Paper 1 stimulus text describes how Pahela Boishakh is observed in Dhaka and argues that the day has become both more commercial and more political over three decades. Write the 95-word summary.

  1. 01Separate the descriptive from the argumentative content

A cultural text usually contains both, and the summary question rewards the argument. Note the content points as fragments: ভোরের গান; শোভাযাত্রা; সাদা-লাল পোশাক; বাণিজ্যিক চাপ বেড়েছে; রাজনৈতিক তাৎপর্য বেড়েছে. Five points, of which the last two carry the text's actual claim.

  2. 02Rephrase into your own words

Lifted language cannot earn the AO3 mark, so বাণিজ্যিক চাপ becomes ব্যবসায়িক দিক, and রাজনৈতিক তাৎপর্য becomes সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয়ের প্রশ্ন. The content is preserved; the wording is yours.

  3. 03Order the points so the argument survives

Description first, claim last, so that the final sentence of the summary carries the text's thesis. A summary whose last sentence is about clothing has buried the argument.

  4. 04Draft to about 95 words in full sentences

  5. 05Check the two grids

AO2: all five content points present, nothing irrelevant added, no opinion of your own imported - a summary is not an essay. AO3: full sentences, varied connectives, honorific পরেন used of the participants, and no phrase lifted whole from the stimulus.

  6. 06Check the length

Count the words. If the draft runs past 100, the marking stops at the first natural break after 90, so the final sentence carrying the thesis must land inside that window - otherwise the best sentence in the answer is never read.

Result: About 95 words, five content points, the text's argument in the final position, and every phrase rephrased. The single most common error in this task on cultural texts is summarising the description and omitting the claim; the writer's argument is usually what the content grid is counting.

Exam focus

  • The two dated anchors for Pahela Boishakh are Chhayanaut's Ramna observance from 1967 and the UNESCO inscription of the Mangal Shobhajatra in 2016.
  • হালখাতা links the festival to the calendar's own revenue-year origin - a connection that earns analytical credit.
  • পালন করা for solemn observance, উদযাপন করা for festive celebration. Getting this wrong is visible.
  • Naming a specific food, a specific procession or a specific fair beats any number of adjectives.

Typical mistakes

  • Describing Pahela Boishakh as a Hindu or a Muslim festival; it is neither, and that is the point.
  • Attributing the Mangal Shobhajatra to Bengal generally rather than to the Dhaka observance where it originated and is inscribed.
  • Using উদযাপন for Ekushey February or any day of mourning.
  • Writing about the new year without mentioning its economics, which the third bullet explicitly asks about.
  • Assuming the Dhaka food traditions of the day are shared in Kolkata; the observances differ.

ধর্মীয় উৎসব: the two great festival cycles#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Bengali festivals and traditions - Roots and originsLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Bengali festivals and traditions - Social and economic importance

Key points

দুর্গাপূজা is the largest festival of the Bengali Hindu year and the dominant public event of the autumn in West Bengal, where it fills five days from ষষ্ঠী to দশমী and effectively closes the working city. It is also observed by Hindu communities in Bangladesh, where it is a public holiday. Its documented distinction is that Durga Puja in Kolkata was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021 - a dated fact you can use. What makes it examinable under the third bullet is its economy: the প্রতিমা, the clay images, are made by hereditary artisan communities, most famously in the Kumartuli quarter of north Kolkata; neighbourhood committees compete over মণ্ডপ, temporary pavilions, which since the late twentieth century have been designed to elaborate themes; and the whole is financed by a mixture of household subscription and corporate sponsorship that has grown into a substantial advertising season.
The Islamic festivals run on the lunar calendar and therefore move through the solar year, which changes what they mean practically. ঈদুল ফিতর, at the end of রমজান, and ঈদুল আজহা, the festival of sacrifice, are the two principal occasions for Bengali Muslims in both countries and among the diaspora. In Bangladesh, ঈদুল ফিতর produces the largest annual movement of people in the country as city workers travel home, with the pressure on roads, railways and ferries a fixture of the news every year; remittance inflows peak in the weeks before it; and ঈদের কেনাকাটা is the retail year's high point. ঈদুল আজহা brings the কোরবানি, the sacrifice, and with it a livestock market that operates at a scale visible in the economy. Both are marked in West Bengal too, where they are public holidays and where the observance in Kolkata's older Muslim quarters is a documented urban tradition.
The two cycles interlock in ways worth writing about, and this is where the analysis lies rather than in either alone. Both countries schedule public holidays around festivals of more than one religion, so that a Bangladeshi calendar carries দুর্গাপূজা, বড়দিন and বুদ্ধ পূর্ণিমা alongside the Eids, and a West Bengal calendar carries the Eids alongside the Hindu festivals. Public argument about that arrangement exists in both places and is conducted differently in each. There are also shared practices that cross the line - the visiting, the new clothes, the exchange of food, the fairs that attach to shrines and temples alike - and there are documented instances of communal tension around festivals in both countries. A strong essay names the sharing and the tension, attributes claims about either, and does not present either as the whole picture.
Two smaller occasions are worth knowing because reading texts like them. সরস্বতী পূজা, in মাঘ, is the students' festival: schools and colleges in West Bengal and among Bangladeshi Hindus hold it, and it functions socially as a day of first saris and of licensed adolescent freedom, which is why it appears so often in fiction and film. রথযাত্রা, the chariot festival, is the occasion at which, by long convention in West Bengal, the first bamboo frame of the Durga image is begun - a small fact that shows how the ritual year links its occasions. The vocabulary set: পূজা, worship; প্রতিমা, image; মণ্ডপ, pavilion; বিসর্জন, immersion; অঞ্জলি, floral offering; নামাজ, prayer; রোজা, the fast; কোরবানি, sacrifice; সেমাই, the vermicelli sweet of Eid; ঈদের ছুটি, the Eid holiday; শুভেচ্ছা, greetings.

Translating a festival passage from Bengali into English

Translate: পুজোর আগে কুমারটুলির শিল্পীরা রাতদিন কাজ করেন। মাটির প্রতিমা তৈরি হতে কয়েক সপ্তাহ লাগে, আর বৃষ্টি হলে শুকোতে দেরি হয়। অনেক পরিবার তিন প্রজন্ম ধরে এই কাজ করে আসছে, তবু তরুণদের অনেকেই এখন অন্য পেশায় যেতে চায়।

  1. 01Find the finite verbs

করেন, লাগে, হয়, আসছে, চায়. Present tense throughout, and করেন is honorific - the writer is marking respect for the artisans, which tells you something about the passage's stance before you translate a word.

  2. 02Sentence one

পুজোর আগে কুমারটুলির শিল্পীরা রাতদিন কাজ করেন। Before the puja, the artisans of Kumartuli work night and day. Note that the honorific করেন cannot be carried into English; do not compensate with the respected artisans, which would add words the Bengali does not contain.

  3. 03Sentence two, first clause

মাটির প্রতিমা তৈরি হতে কয়েক সপ্তাহ লাগে - a clay image takes several weeks to make. লাগা here is the impersonal verb of requirement; the English equivalent is takes, and the infinitive হতে is the thing that takes the time.

  4. 04Sentence two, second clause

আর বৃষ্টি হলে শুকোতে দেরি হয় - and if it rains, drying is delayed. -লে on বৃষ্টি হওয়া is the conditional participle, the compact non-hypothetical conditional; English can render it with if or with when.

  5. 05Sentence three

অনেক পরিবার তিন প্রজন্ম ধরে এই কাজ করে আসছে - many families have been doing this work for three generations. করে আসছে is a compound verb: the perfective participle plus আসা gives a continuing action reaching up to the present, which English handles with the present perfect continuous. ধরে is a postposition of duration taking no genitive.

  6. 06Final clause

তবু তরুণদের অনেকেই এখন অন্য পেশায় যেতে চায় - yet many of the young now want to go into other professions. তবু is the concessive, অনেকেই carries the emphatic -ই, and পেশায় is locative.

  7. 07Write the English

Before the puja the artisans of Kumartuli work night and day. A clay image takes several weeks to make, and if it rains the drying is delayed. Many families have been doing this work for three generations, and yet a good many of the young now want to move into other trades.

Result: The passage carried four constructions that do not exist in English - the honorific verb, the impersonal লাগা, the conditional participle and the compound করে আসছে - and the translation is graded on whether you saw them. The clue that this is a passage about change, not about craft, is in its last word.

Exam focus

  • Durga Puja in Kolkata, UNESCO inscription 2021, is the dated anchor for the Hindu cycle.
  • The Eid travel surge and the pre-Eid remittance peak are concrete, describable economic effects - exactly what bullet three asks for.
  • Both countries hold public holidays for festivals of more than one religion. That is a fact worth stating, and the argument about it is worth attributing.
  • Do not confuse the two Eids; ঈদুল ফিতর ends Ramadan and ঈদুল আজহা is the festival of sacrifice.

Typical mistakes

  • Treating Durga Puja as a West Bengal festival only, or the Eids as a Bangladeshi festival only.
  • Describing ritual without ever mentioning the economy the third bullet asks about.
  • Presenting inter-communal relations as uniformly harmonious or uniformly tense; both are documented and both need attribution.
  • Giving figures for pandal numbers, sponsorship value or holiday travel.
  • Using পূজা as a general word for festival; it means worship and belongs to a specific tradition.

Key points

Regional diversity in this bullet means three different things at once, and separating them is the analytical move. First, diversity between the two countries: the same festival is observed differently in Dhaka and in Kolkata, sometimes on different days. Second, diversity within each country: the Sylhet region, the Chittagong region, north Bengal, the Sundarbans and the Kolkata metropolitan area each have observances the others do not. Third, and most important, diversity of the communities who live in Bengali-speaking countries but are not Bengali: the peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts hold their own new-year festivals in mid-April, known collectively by the blended name বৈসাবি, made from বিজু among the Chakma, সাংগ্রাই among the Marma and বৈসু among the Tripura. An answer on this bullet that never leaves Dhaka and Kolkata has not answered it.
The regional festivals that recur most in reading and listening material are worth naming with their places. পৌষমেলা, the winter fair at Santiniketan in Birbhum, has run since the nineteenth century around the Tagore family's institutions and draws craftspeople and Baul singers from across the region. বসন্ত উৎসব, the spring festival marked at Dol Purnima, is observed in the same place in a form associated with Rabindranath Tagore's reworking of the older দোল. বড়দিন, Christmas, is a visible urban occasion in Kolkata, particularly around Park Street and the older churches, and among Christian communities in both countries. বুদ্ধ পূর্ণিমা is a public occasion in Bangladesh and among Buddhist communities in the hill districts. And রথযাত্রা, the chariot festival, has strong local observances in both countries, with the Mahesh rath at Serampore among the best known in West Bengal.
Two secular occasions have become festivals in everything but name, and both are directly examinable because they touch other parts of the specification. অমর একুশে বইমেলা, the book fair held through the month of February in Dhaka, grew out of the observance of ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি and is now the publishing year's centre of gravity in Bangladesh; the আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলা plays a comparable role in West Bengal. Both are commercial events, cultural events and, in the Dhaka case, commemorative events at once - and the fact that a country's largest book fair grew out of a day of mourning for people killed over the status of a language is one of the most useful single observations a candidate can make in this whole specification. It connects the festivals sub-theme, the political sub-theme and the research topic on the emergence of Bangladesh in one sentence.
The vocabulary of regional description needs to be precise, because vagueness here reads as ignorance: অঞ্চল, region; আঞ্চলিক, regional; স্থানীয়, local; গ্রামীণ and শহুরে, rural and urban; জনগোষ্ঠী, community or people; ঐতিহ্যবাহী, traditional; লোকসংস্কৃতি, folk culture; মেলা, fair; কারুশিল্প, craft; পরিবেশন করা, to perform. Two structures do most of the comparative work: এক অঞ্চলে … অন্য অঞ্চলে …, in one region and in another; and যেখানে … সেখানে …, the relative-correlative pair used spatially, যেখানে ঢাকায় শোভাযাত্রা হয়, সেখানে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামে জলখেলা হয় - where in Dhaka there is a procession, in the Chittagong Hill Tracts there is a water festival.
Worked example

Answering a listening question on a regional festival

A Paper 3 listening passage has a speaker from Rangamati describing Boisabi and a second speaker asking about it. One question asks: বক্তা কেন মনে করেন উৎসবটির নাম নিয়ে সতর্ক থাকা দরকার? Work out how to hear the answer.

  1. 01Predict the shape before listening

The question asks about caution over a name. In this subject, questions about names are almost always about who gets to name something. Expect the answer to involve more than one community and more than one word - which is exactly what বৈসাবি is, a blend of three festival names.

  2. 02Pass one: identify the speakers

Two speakers, one local and one asking. The opinion in the question belongs to বক্তা, the speaker who is describing - so attribute correctly. With two-speaker passages the commonest error is answering with the interviewer's view.

  3. 03Pass two: find the passage where the name is discussed

Use individual control to locate it. Listen for the three component names - বিজু, সাংগ্রাই, বৈসু - because the explanation will be built around them.

  4. 04Pass three: hear the reason, not the description

The question is কেন, why. A description of the three festivals is not an answer. The answer will be a clause introduced by কারণ, যেহেতু or a phrase like এর ফলে - listen for the connective, which is where a reason is signposted in spoken Bengali.

  5. 05Write the answer at the right length

    Only the information asked for: কারণ বৈসাবি নামটি তিনটি আলাদা জনগোষ্ঠীর তিনটি উৎসবের নাম মিলিয়ে তৈরি, আর একটিমাত্র নাম ব্যবহার করলে আলাদা ঐতিহ্যগুলো ঢাকা পড়ে যায়। Because the name is a blend of three different communities' festivals, and using one name alone obscures the separate traditions.

  6. 06Check the attribution

The answer says what the speaker thinks, not what you think. If the question names বক্তা, your answer must not slide into a general claim.

Result: কারণ বৈসাবি নামটি তিনটি আলাদা জনগোষ্ঠীর তিনটি উৎসবের নাম মিলিয়ে তৈরি, আর একটিমাত্র নাম ব্যবহার করলে আলাদা ঐতিহ্যগুলো ঢাকা পড়ে যায়। The method - predict, identify speakers, locate, listen for the connective, answer at length - is what individual control of the recording is for.

Exam focus

  • বৈসাবি and the hill communities' new year are the fastest way to show you know that Bengali-speaking countries are not ethnically uniform.
  • The Ekushey Book Fair links three parts of the specification at once. Learn that connection.
  • The relative-correlative যেখানে … সেখানে is the natural Bengali structure for a regional comparison.
  • Regional diversity means diversity within, between and beyond the two Bengali-speaking polities. Cover all three.

Typical mistakes

  • Answering the regional diversity bullet entirely from Dhaka and Kolkata.
  • Treating বৈসাবি as a Bengali festival; it belongs to the hill communities and the name is a blend of three of their festivals.
  • Confusing পৌষমেলা with পৌষ সংক্রান্তি; one is a fair at a place, the other a calendar day.
  • Describing regional variation as quaint or backward, which reads badly and is not analysis.
  • Naming a festival without naming where it is held.

সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক গুরুত্ব: what festivals do, and what they cost#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Bengali festivals and traditions - Social and economic importance

Key points

The economic case for festivals in the Bengali-speaking world is real, and it can be made entirely without invented figures if you argue in mechanisms rather than in magnitudes. Four mechanisms carry it. First, the artisan economy: image-makers, weavers, potters, drummers, tailors and decorators earn a large part of an annual income in a few weeks, which means a bad season is a household crisis and not an inconvenience. Second, the retail cycle: clothing, food and gift purchasing concentrates around the festivals so heavily that the trading year in both countries is shaped by it. Third, transport and hospitality: the pre-Eid movement of people in Bangladesh and the Durga Puja crowds in Kolkata are among the largest movements either country handles. Fourth, sponsorship and advertising, which since the late twentieth century has become a substantial revenue stream around the largest festivals.
The social functions are as arguable and should be argued rather than asserted. Festivals redistribute, through obligatory giving - the ফিতরা and জাকাত associated with Ramadan and Eid, the feeding and the gifts that attach to puja and to weddings - and researchers of both societies have written about that redistribution as a real if partial safety net. They also organise neighbourhood life: a পূজা কমিটি or a mosque committee is a durable local institution that does other work between festivals. And they mark identity, which is where the argument gets sharp: the same occasion can be experienced as a shared civic celebration and as an assertion of one community's presence, and both readings are made publicly in both countries. Name both; attribute both.
The costs are equally documented and belong in a balanced answer. Festival spending falls hardest on households with least, and the social obligation to spend is real; commentators in both countries write about it every year. Environmental costs are documented and dated: immersion of images made with non-biodegradable paints has been the subject of regulation and of court direction in India, and firework and sound-level restrictions around festivals have been imposed and argued about in both countries. Waste, water and noise are the three headings. And there is the argument about commercialisation - that sponsorship and competition have displaced the religious or communal content of the occasion - which is made by some participants and rejected by others, and which is a genuinely good essay question because both sides can be evidenced.
The structures that make this bullet writable are the ones that hold two things together. একদিকে … অন্যদিকে … for the balance. শুধু … নয়, বরং … for the not-merely construction: উৎসব শুধু ধর্মীয় আয়োজন নয়, বরং একটি বড় অর্থনৈতিক ঘটনা - a festival is not merely a religious event but a large economic one. যত … তত … for a proportional claim: যত পৃষ্ঠপোষকতা বাড়ে, তত প্রতিযোগিতাও বাড়ে - the more sponsorship grows, the more competition grows with it. And the honest conclusion frame সব মিলিয়ে বলা যায় যে …, taking everything together it can be said that, which lets you close with a judgement without claiming to have settled anything.
Worked example

Building a research-project style answer on a festival question

Suppose your research topic were tourism in Bengali-speaking countries and the unseen source were about Durga Puja tourism in Kolkata. The unseen question asks whether festivals are a good basis for a tourist economy. Plan the 300-word answer.

  1. 01Read the mark split before you plan

AO2 out of 10 for using the provided source, AO3 out of 10 for language, AO4 out of 20 for the critical response and, crucially, for evidence drawn from your OWN research beyond what the source supplies. Two-thirds of the AO4 marks are therefore for material the source did not give you.

  2. 02Take two points from the source and mark them as such

উৎসের তথ্য অনুযায়ী … signals to the examiner that you are meeting AO2. Two points is enough; the source is not the essay.

  3. 03Bring three things the source did not have

This is where the AO4 marks are. For example: the 2021 UNESCO inscription and what it did to the city's promotion of the festival; the artisan economy of Kumartuli and its seasonal concentration; the environmental regulation of immersion. Each is checkable, dated or institutional, and none of them requires a statistic.

  4. 04Structure the argument, not the topic

Four moves: festivals concentrate visitors in a short window, which is an advantage for revenue and a problem for infrastructure; a festival cannot be scheduled to suit a tourist industry; heritage recognition raises visibility but also raises expectations of preservation; and the people who make the festival are not the people who capture most of the tourist revenue. Each move is an argument with a counter-argument inside it.

  5. 05Write the personal evaluation as a judgement with a reason

আমার গবেষণার ভিত্তিতে আমার মনে হয় …, on the basis of my research it seems to me - which does exactly what the AO4 descriptor asks: uses appropriate evidence to justify a conclusion.

  6. 06Budget 300 words

About 40 words framing the question, 60 on the source, 140 on your own evidence, 60 on evaluation and conclusion. Everything you write is marked and there is no word limit, but a candidate who writes 500 words in Paper 1 has taken the time from the translation and the reading section.

Result: A plan in which the source occupies a fifth of the answer and your own research occupies half. The commonest failure in this task is an essay that paraphrases the provided source at length: it can score well on AO2 and can barely score at all on the 20-mark AO4 grid, which is explicitly for evidence beyond the source.

Exam focus

  • Argue in mechanisms - artisans, retail, transport, sponsorship - not in magnitudes you do not have.
  • শুধু … নয়, বরং … is the single most useful frame in this bullet.
  • The environmental regulation of immersion and of fireworks is a dated, documented cost that most candidates never mention.
  • The commercialisation argument has two evidenced sides. That makes it a good question and a bad place to take a side without attribution.

Typical mistakes

  • Claiming a value for the festival economy, or a number of visitors, from memory.
  • Writing about social benefit with no mention of who pays.
  • Presenting commercialisation as self-evidently bad.
  • Ignoring the environmental dimension, which is both documented and regulated.
  • Concluding with a restatement rather than a judgement.
