Recording is Assessment Objective 3 - capturing ideas, observations and insights relevant to your intentions as work progresses, chiefly through drawing but also through photography, notes and other visual forms. This topic teaches observational drawing from first-hand sources, the sketchbook as the engine of the whole project, the crucial distinction between primary and secondary sources, and the difference between recording that merely copies and recording that captures genuine insight.

Why recording matters (AO3)#

Key points

Recording is one of the four assessment objectives in its own right (AO3), defined as recording ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses. It is the activity of capturing what you see, think and discover - through drawing above all, but also through photography, written notes, diagrams and collected materials - so that observation and thinking become visible and can feed the development of the work. The phrase 'as work progresses' is important: recording is not a preliminary stage you complete and leave behind, but a continuous practice threaded through the whole project.
The heart of AO3 is the word 'relevant'. Recording is not decorative copying for its own sake; it must serve your intentions. A page of beautifully rendered but purposeless studies scores less than rougher recording that genuinely investigates something you need for your project - the fall of light you intend to paint, the structure of a form you will build, the texture you want to reproduce. Good recording asks a question and answers it visually, gathering exactly the visual information the developing work requires.
Recording is also the objective through which observation is trained. Drawing from observation forces you to look far more closely and analytically than everyday seeing ever does - to notice proportion, structure, tone, edge and relationship. This disciplined looking is the foundation of all the other objectives: you cannot develop convincing personal work (AO4) from ideas you have not properly observed, and the quality of a whole project often rests on the quality of the first-hand looking that fed it.
The distinction between insight and mere transcription runs through this topic. A photograph or a photorealist copy records appearances; genuine AO3 recording captures insight - the selected, emphasised, understood essence of what you are studying, plus your thinking about it. Two students can draw the same object and record utterly different amounts: one copies its outline, the other investigates its structure, its behaviour in light, and what about it is useful to the project. The second is recording insight, and that is what the objective rewards.
Because recording underpins the whole creative process, it links directly to every other topic in this course. It is where the formal elements are practised, where media are explored (AO2), where sources are gathered for developing ideas (AO1), and where the raw material of the final response (AO4) is generated. A project stands or falls on the richness and relevance of what is recorded into it, which is why the sketchbook - the place where recording chiefly lives - is treated as the engine of the whole enterprise.
Worked example

Relevant versus decorative recording

Two students each fill a page with drawings of shells for a project about natural growth. How can their recording differ in relevance?

    Draws several neat, complete shells centred on the page, prettily shaded, but investigating nothing beyond their outlines.

  2. 02Student B - relevant

    Draws cross-sections and enlarged details of the spiral, annotates the growth pattern, tries the surface in three media, and notes which will feed the developing forms.

Key points

Observational drawing - drawing directly from something in front of you - is the central recording skill and one of the most valued abilities in the whole subject. It is built on accurate looking rather than on knowing how to 'draw a thing': the aim is to draw what you actually see, not the symbol your mind supplies. Beginners draw the idea of an eye or a hand; observers draw the specific shapes, tones and relationships actually present. Training this honest looking is the work of a lifetime, but a reliable method makes it learnable.
The method begins with measurement and proportion. Sighting (or comparative measurement) uses a pencil held at arm's length to compare sizes and angles - how many head-heights tall is the figure, is this edge steeper or shallower than vertical - so that the drawing's proportions match the subject's. Establishing the big relationships first (the overall shape, the main divisions, the angles) before any detail prevents the common disaster of a drawing that is beautifully detailed but wrongly proportioned. Negative space - drawing the shapes of the gaps rather than the objects - is a powerful checking and seeing tool.
With the proportions blocked in lightly, the drawing is built up in stages: from the general to the particular, from structure to surface. Structural or constructional drawing understands the underlying three-dimensional form (seeing a head as an egg-like volume, a limb as a cylinder) so that surface detail sits convincingly on solid form. Then tone is established - squinting to reduce the subject to a few simplified values, laying in the broad light and shadow masses before refining gradations - which turns the flat shapes into the illusion of form. Contour and line quality, edges (hard where forms meet sharply, soft where they turn gently), and finally selective detail complete the study.
Different kinds of observational drawing serve different purposes, and a mature student commands several. A gesture drawing is a rapid (often 30-second to two-minute) study capturing the movement, energy and overall pose rather than detail - excellent for life drawing and for loosening up. A sustained tonal study slowly investigates form and light. A line drawing investigates contour and structure. A detailed study zooms in on a passage. Working at different speeds, scales and levels of finish, and choosing the right kind for the recording task, is itself a skill.
The insistence on primary sources - drawing from the real object, place or person in front of you - matters because first-hand observation yields information no photograph can. From life you perceive true three-dimensional form, real colour and light, scale, atmosphere and the choice of viewpoint; you select and emphasise as you look; and you understand the subject in a way copying a flat photograph never delivers. This is why the specification and examiners consistently prioritise primary-source recording, and why building the confidence and habit of drawing from life - not from the internet - is one of the most important things you can do for your practice.
Worked example

Drawing a hand from observation

Work through drawing your own non-dominant hand from life, in the correct order.

  1. 01Measure and block in

    By sighting, compare the length of the palm to the fingers and note the overall gesture; lightly block in the big shape and the angle of the wrist and fingers before any detail.

  2. 02Construct the forms

    See the fingers as jointed cylinders and the palm as a slab; draw this underlying structure so the surface will sit on solid form.

  3. 03Check with negative space

    Draw the shapes of the gaps between the fingers to verify the spacing and angles - a reliable way to catch proportion errors.

  4. 04Add tone and detail

    Squint to find the main light and shadow, lay in the broad tone to turn the forms, then refine the knuckles, nails and creases last.

Result: By measuring and constructing before detailing, and by checking with negative space, the hand is drawn from genuine observation with convincing proportion and form - the disciplined method that makes observational drawing learnable.

Key points

The sketchbook (or workbook) is the engine of an A-Level art project - the place where recording, research, experimentation, development and reflection all happen and where the journey through the four assessment objectives is evidenced. It is emphatically a working document, not a gallery of finished pieces: it should show thinking in progress, including rough studies, false starts, annotations, collected materials and half-formed ideas. A sketchbook that contains only polished, precious pages is failing at its real job, which is to be the visible record of an enquiry.
A rich working sketchbook typically holds a mixture of things: observational studies from primary sources; media experiments and sample sheets; research into artists and contexts (with the student's own analysis, not just printouts); developmental drawings that test compositions and ideas; collected visual references and materials; and continuous written annotation. The interplay of these is the point - a study leads to an experiment, which prompts an artist reference, which suggests a development - so the pages should feel connected, one thing leading to the next, rather than isolated.
The sketchbook is where drawing from life, thinking on paper and planning meet, and its great value is that it lowers the stakes. Because it is private working space rather than a finished outcome, you can take risks, try the thing that might fail, think aloud in notes, and record honestly - all of which the assessment wants to see. Many students undermine their own marks by being too careful in the sketchbook, treating every page as a display piece; the students who improve fastest treat it as a laboratory.
Presentation still matters, but in service of communication, not preciousness. A sketchbook should be legible and organised enough that its story can be followed - the enquiry should read clearly from page to page - and thoughtful layout, sequencing and the relationship of image to annotation help that story land. But this is different from making every page 'pretty': the aim is clarity of thinking made visible, so that a viewer (and a moderator) can see how the ideas developed and how each objective was met.
Finally, the sketchbook is where the AO3 recording of this topic is chiefly evidenced, and it should therefore be full of first-hand observation and genuine insight. Fill it from primary sources; annotate what you record and why; date and sequence the work so the progress is clear; and let it be the honest, working home of the whole project. A strong sketchbook is often the single best predictor of a strong outcome, because it shows the depth of investigation from which any good final piece must grow.
Worked example

Diagnosing a weak sketchbook

A student's sketchbook is full of neat, finished-looking drawings but scores poorly. Diagnose and prescribe.

  1. 01Spot the symptom

    Every page is a careful, complete drawing; there are no experiments, no false starts, little annotation and no research - it is a gallery, not a workbook.

  2. 02Name the cause

    The student is treating the sketchbook as a display of outcomes, so it evidences finished skill but not the process (AO1-AO4 journey) the assessment marks.

  3. 03Prescribe experiment and research

    Add media sample sheets, developmental thumbnails, and analysed artist research, connected to the drawings - showing thinking, not just competence.

  4. 04Prescribe annotation

    Annotate what each page investigates and where it leads, so the enquiry reads clearly and the recording shows insight, not just appearance.

Result: The fix is to convert a gallery of finished pages into a working laboratory - adding experiment, research, development and annotation - so the sketchbook evidences the whole creative process, not only finished drawing skill.

Key points

Sources are the material you gather and work from, and they divide into two kinds. Primary sources are first-hand: things you observe and record directly yourself - the actual object, place, person or event, and your own photographs, studies and recordings of them. Secondary sources are second-hand: images and information gathered from other people's work - reproductions in books and online, other artists' images, existing photographs you did not take. The distinction is fundamental because the specification and examiners strongly prioritise primary sources, and a project built mainly on secondary material is capped in what it can achieve.
The reason primary sources are valued so highly is that they yield richer, more authentic and more personal information. Working from the real thing, you perceive genuine three-dimensional form, true colour, scale, light and atmosphere; you choose your own viewpoint, framing and emphasis; and you understand the subject through the act of observing it. A secondary reproduction is already someone else's selection, flattened, cropped and colour-shifted - to copy it is to inherit their decisions and to observe nothing first-hand. Primary recording also guarantees originality, since the work grows from your own encounter rather than from an existing image.
This does not mean secondary sources have no place - they are essential and legitimate for certain purposes. You research artists, movements and contexts (AO1) through secondary material; you gather secondary references to understand something you cannot access directly; and secondary imagery can inform and inspire. The key is how they are used: secondary sources should inform and support your enquiry, not be the thing you copy for your outcomes. Using a photograph you found online as the direct basis of a 'personal' painting is weak practice and, if the source is another's copyrighted image reproduced closely, an integrity problem too.
Photography sits interestingly across the divide. A photograph you take yourself of your own subject is a primary source and a legitimate, valued recording tool - especially for fleeting subjects (movement, weather, expression) or where sustained drawing from life is impossible. But a photograph found online is a secondary source. So the same medium can be primary or secondary depending on who made it and how; the honest question is always 'did I gather this first-hand?'. Recording your own photographs, and drawing and developing from them, keeps the work primary and personal.
Good practice, then, is to build your project on a foundation of first-hand recording, supplemented by well-chosen secondary research, with every source honestly acknowledged. Gather primary material actively - go and draw and photograph your subject yourself - and treat secondary sources as research that informs rather than imagery to copy. When you do use others' images, record them as references, analyse rather than reproduce them, and transform them into a genuinely personal response. This discipline is what keeps the work original, authentic and strong across all four objectives.
Worked example

Turning a secondary interest into primary work

A student is inspired by online photographs of derelict factories but has no access to one. How should they proceed?

  1. 01Use the secondary source correctly

    Keep the online images as research and inspiration - to understand the subject and gather ideas - and analyse them, but do not copy them as outcomes.

  2. 02Find an accessible primary subject

    Identify a first-hand equivalent they can actually record: a disused local building, rusted machinery, peeling and decaying surfaces nearby.

  3. 03Gather primary material

    Go and draw and photograph these real subjects themselves, recording true texture, light and detail at first hand.

  4. 04Develop from the primary

    Build the outcomes from the first-hand recording, informed but not dictated by the secondary research - keeping the work primary, original and personal.

Result: The secondary images legitimately inform the enquiry, but the actual recording and development rest on accessible primary sources - the discipline that keeps the project original and satisfies the priority on first-hand observation.

Key points

Annotation is the written thinking that accompanies visual work, and at A-Level it is a genuine skill that carries real marks. Its job is to make your thinking visible - to explain your intentions, reflect on what you have recorded and made, analyse the artists and sources you are using, evaluate what is and is not working, and set the next step. Because the assessment objectives reward the journey of an enquiry (developing ideas, recording insights, refining, making connections), annotation is often the clearest evidence of that journey, articulating the reasoning that the images alone cannot.
The single most common annotation weakness is description instead of analysis and reflection. Weak annotation narrates the obvious ('I drew a shell in pencil') or merely labels ('charcoal study'); strong annotation reflects and reasons ('working in charcoal let me capture the shell's tonal range quickly, but I lost the fine spiral detail, so next I will try a fine pen to record the structure'). The test is whether the note adds thinking that is not already visible in the image. If it only says what anyone can see, it is not earning its place.
Good annotation does several distinct jobs, and it helps to be conscious of which you are doing. It states intentions (what you are trying to achieve and why). It analyses sources and artists (what an artist does and what you can take from it - this is where AO1 critical understanding lives). It reflects on your own work (what worked, what did not, what you learned - genuine self-evaluation). And it plans forward (what this leads you to do next), which is what makes the enquiry feel purposeful and connected rather than a series of unrelated pages. The best annotation threads these together so each page's note advances the project.
Annotation should also connect the visual and the critical - linking your own making to the artists, contexts and ideas you are studying. When you note that you have borrowed a compositional device from a particular painter and adapted it for your intention, or that a work relates to a theme or context, you are making the connections (AO4) and demonstrating the critical understanding (AO1) that the higher marks require. This is the difference between annotation as a caption and annotation as the intellectual spine of the project.
In practice, annotate honestly, specifically and continuously, in your own voice. Honesty matters because acknowledging what failed is a genuine finding and shows reflective maturity; specificity matters because vague praise ('this is effective') says nothing, while precise observation ('the complementary contrast makes the focal point sing') shows real analysis; and continuity matters because annotation woven through the project tells its whole story. Combined with rich first-hand recording, purposeful annotation turns a sketchbook from a collection of images into a documented, reflective enquiry - which is exactly what AO3, and the assessment as a whole, is looking for.
Worked example

Rewriting weak annotation

A student has written under a study: 'A drawing of a rusty chain in biro. I like it.' Rewrite it as purposeful annotation.

  1. 01Diagnose

    The note describes the obvious (subject, medium) and offers vague praise - it adds no thinking beyond what the image shows.

  2. 02Add analysis

    Rewrite: 'Biro cross-hatching captured the rust's pitted texture and the metal's tonal range well, building the corroded surface my urban-decay theme needs.'

  3. 03Add evaluation

    Continue: 'But the biro could not give the deepest darks in the crevices, so the chain reads slightly flat where it should feel heavy.'

  4. 04Add forward plan and connection

    End: 'Next I will combine biro with ink wash for those darks, following the layered mark-making I noted in the etchings I researched.'

Result: The rewrite analyses, evaluates and plans forward, and connects to research - adding thinking absent from the image and advancing the enquiry, which is what purposeful annotation must do.
