Key points

Every medium - every material, tool and process - has its own qualities, potential and limitations, and the central skill of Assessment Objective 2 is to select and explore media purposefully so that the means serve the meaning. Watercolour is fluid, translucent and unforgiving; oil paint is slow-drying, buildable and richly blendable; charcoal is soft, smudgeable and tonal; a hard pencil is precise and linear. None is better than another in the abstract; each is better for particular intentions. Choosing the medium that best expresses an idea, rather than defaulting to the familiar, is what separates purposeful practice from habit.
It helps to think of media in families that share properties: dry drawing media (graphite, charcoal, chalk, pastel, coloured pencil), wet drawing media (pen and ink, brush and ink), water-based paints (watercolour, gouache, acrylic), oil-based paint, printmaking processes, three-dimensional and construction materials, textile processes, and digital and lens-based technologies. Understanding these families lets you reach for the right kind of tool - if you want luminous, layered transparency you look to the water-based translucent media; if you want physical, sculptural surface you look to impasto oil or acrylic, or to relief and construction.
The idea of 'fitness for purpose' is worth stating explicitly, because it is assessed. When you decide to render a delicate botanical study in fine pen and watercolour, or an energetic figure in loose charcoal, or a hard-edged geometric design in vector software, you are matching the handling qualities of the medium to the character of the subject and the mood you intend. Recording that reasoning in annotation - why you chose this medium and what it let you achieve - is how you evidence AO2 thinking, not just AO2 doing.
Media can also be combined. Mixed media - deliberately using several media together (ink over watercolour, collage into paint, stitch into printed paper) - exploits the contrast of their qualities and is central to much contemporary practice. Experimenting with unfamiliar and unexpected media, and with combinations, is exactly the kind of exploration the specification rewards, provided it is purposeful rather than random - the experiment must be testing something relevant to your intentions.
Finally, technique carries meaning. The same subject painted in smooth, invisible brushwork versus thick, agitated impasto says different things; a photograph shot sharp and clinical versus grainy and blurred means differently. Because the how of a work is inseparable from the what, developing genuine control of your chosen media - and understanding how their handling communicates - is not a mechanical skill bolted on to ideas but part of how the ideas are expressed.
Worked example

Matching medium to intention

A student wants to convey the fragile, translucent quality of a jellyfish. Reason through the choice of medium.

  1. 01Analyse the subject's character

    The subject is translucent, luminous, soft-edged and delicate - qualities of light passing through a thin body.

  2. 02Reject an ill-fitting medium

    Opaque, heavy impasto oil would fight this - it is physical and solid where the subject is ethereal.

  3. 03Select for fitness

    Translucent watercolour, layered in thin washes with soft wet-in-wet edges, mirrors the subject's translucency; a little masking fluid preserves luminous highlights.

  4. 04Record the reasoning

    Annotate that watercolour was chosen because its transparency and soft edges echo the jellyfish's own light-filled fragility - evidencing purposeful AO2 selection.

Result: The medium is chosen because its handling qualities mirror the subject's character, and the reasoning is recorded - a model of purposeful media selection rather than default habit.

Key points

The dry drawing media each have a distinct character. Graphite pencils run from hard (H grades - pale, precise, linear) to soft (B grades - dark, rich, easily smudged for tone), so a single medium spans crisp line and broad tonal modelling. Charcoal (willow or compressed) is soft, velvety and intensely dark, superb for rapid tonal drawing, bold gesture and large scale, and it can be lifted with a putty rubber to pull out highlights - a subtractive way of drawing with light. Chalk and pastel add colour to the dry family: soft pastel is powdery and blendable for luminous colour, while oil pastel is waxy, dense and resistant to blending. Conte, a firmer chalk, gives the classic red-and-black drawing of the old masters.
Pen and ink is the principal wet drawing medium. Because ink gives an unvarying black line, tone must be constructed from marks - hatching (parallel lines), cross-hatching (overlaid sets at angles), stippling (dots) and contour lines - so ink drawing teaches the disciplined building of tone and texture from line, exactly as etching and engraving do. Ink can also be diluted and brushed as wash for fluid tonal areas, or used with a dip pen for an expressively varying line. The medium rewards confidence and cannot easily be erased, which trains decisive mark-making.
Among paints, watercolour is water-based and translucent: it works from light to dark, the white of the paper shining through thin washes to create luminosity, and highlights are reserved (left unpainted) rather than added. It is fluid and atmospheric - ideal for light, air and spontaneity - but unforgiving, since the transparency shows every correction. Gouache is watercolour's opaque cousin: still water-based, but dense and matte, so it can work light over dark and give flat, even areas useful in design and illustration. Both dry quickly.
Acrylic and oil are the heavier painting media. Acrylic is water-based, fast-drying and versatile - it can be thinned to a watercolour-like wash or built up thickly, it is opaque, and it dries permanently and quickly, which suits layering but makes subtle wet blending harder. Oil paint is bound in oil, dries slowly over days, and is prized for exactly that: its long working time allows subtle blending, glazing (thin transparent layers that glow) and rich, buildable impasto. The slow drying that makes oil luxurious to blend also demands patience and understanding of 'fat over lean' layering. Choosing between them is again a matter of intention - the immediacy and hard edges of acrylic versus the depth, blending and slow richness of oil.
Across all these media, the vocabulary of mark and surface matters. Impasto is thickly applied, textural paint that stands proud of the surface (van Gogh, Auerbach); glazing is thin transparent layering that builds luminous depth (as in Renaissance oil painting); scumbling is dragging a thin, broken opaque layer over another so the lower colour shows through; wet-in-wet lets colours bleed and fuse; dry-brush drags a nearly dry brush for broken, textured marks. Learning to produce and to recognise these handling techniques is what allows you both to control your own surfaces and to analyse how a painter achieved theirs.
Worked example

How the medium shapes the image

Explain why J. M. W. Turner's late atmospheric effects suit watercolour and oil, and analyse van Gogh's impasto.

  1. 01Turner and transparency

    Turner's dissolving light and mist exploit watercolour's transparent washes and the luminosity of the paper beneath - light appears to come through the picture, not sit on it.

  2. 02The oil equivalent

    In oil he built the same atmosphere with thin glazes and scumbled, broken layers, using oil's slow blending to fuse sky and sea into soft gradations.

  3. 03Van Gogh and impasto

    Van Gogh instead loads the brush with thick, directional impasto so the paint itself has physical texture and energy - the swirling strokes of 'The Starry Night' are as expressive as the image they form.

  4. 04Draw the lesson

    In each case the handling of the medium is inseparable from the meaning: transparency for dissolving light, impasto for charged energy - technique as expression.

Result: The analysis shows medium and technique carrying meaning - transparency creating atmospheric light, impasto creating physical energy - which is the level of understanding of materials the specification expects.

Key points

Printmaking is the family of processes for making multiple impressions of an image from a prepared surface (a matrix). Its defining features are the reversal of the image (a print is a mirror of the plate), the ability to produce an edition (multiple identical impressions, conventionally numbered as, say, 3/20), and the distinctive marks each process yields. The four great families are relief, intaglio, planographic and stencil, distinguished by whether the ink sits on the raised surface, in incised recesses, on a flat chemically treated surface, or is pushed through a screen.
In relief printing the image is the raised surface: the printmaker cuts away everything that is to stay white, inks the remaining raised areas with a roller, and prints - so the cut-away marks read as white and the uncut surface as black. Lino (linocut) and woodcut are the common school processes; they give bold, graphic, high-contrast images with a characteristic chunky, carved mark, and the wood grain can be exploited. Reduction printing (cutting and printing the same block in stages for multiple colours) is a demanding relief technique. The great tradition includes the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints (Hokusai, Hiroshige) and the bold woodcuts of the German Expressionists.
In intaglio the image is incised below the surface: ink is worked into the recesses, the flat surface is wiped clean, and dampened paper is forced under pressure into the recesses to lift the ink - so, opposite to relief, the incised lines print. Drypoint scratches directly into the plate, raising a burr that holds ink for a soft, velvety line; etching bites the lines with acid through a resist (giving a free, drawn-feeling line, as in Rembrandt's etchings); aquatint bites tone; engraving cuts precise lines with a burin. Intaglio gives fine line and rich tone and a characteristic plate-mark impressed into the paper.
Planographic printing (chiefly lithography) works from a flat surface on the chemical principle that grease and water repel each other: the image is drawn in a greasy medium on stone or plate, the surface is dampened so water sits only on the blank areas, and oily ink then adheres only to the greasy drawing. Lithography preserves the character of the original drawing - a crayon lithograph looks drawn - and was central to the poster art of Toulouse-Lautrec. Screenprinting (a stencil process) pushes ink through a fine mesh screen, blocked in the non-image areas, to lay down flat, vivid areas of colour; it suits bold, graphic, repeatable imagery and is famously associated with Andy Warhol's Pop Art.
Two accessible processes are worth knowing well. Monoprinting produces a single unique impression (mono = one) - for example by painting or drawing onto a smooth plate and taking one print, or drawing into a rolled ink film - and it is prized for its spontaneity and painterly, unrepeatable marks, sitting between painting and print. Collagraph builds a printing plate by gluing textured materials (card, string, fabric, leaves) to a base and printing the resulting relief and texture. Both are ideal for experimentation because they need little equipment, and all printmaking rewards understanding of how the process itself generates marks that could be made no other way - which is the point of choosing to print rather than draw.
Worked example

Choosing a print process for an intention

You want bold, flat, repeatable areas of vivid colour for a Pop-inspired portrait. Which process, and why?

  1. 01Define the target marks

    The intention needs flat, saturated, poster-like colour areas, easily repeated and layered in registration.

  2. 02Test the families

    Intaglio gives fine line and tone (wrong); relief gives chunky carved marks (partly right but not flat colour); lithography preserves drawing (not flat blocks).

  3. 03Select screenprint

    Screenprinting pushes ink through a stencilled mesh to lay down flat, even, vivid colour and repeats in an edition - precisely the Warhol method.

  4. 04Plan the process

    Separate the image into colour layers, prepare a stencil/screen per colour, and print in registration light to dark - the process itself creating the bold graphic look.

Result: The process is chosen because its characteristic output - flat, vivid, repeatable colour - matches the intention, showing the purposeful selection of a print process that AO2 rewards.

Key points

Making in three dimensions falls into four broad approaches, and it is worth holding them clearly in mind because they suit different materials and intentions. Modelling is additive and pliable - building up a soft material such as clay or wax by adding and shaping it, which allows constant change and is forgiving. Carving is subtractive - cutting away from a solid block of stone, wood or plaster to reveal the form within, which is decisive and unforgiving because material once removed cannot be replaced. Casting reproduces a form by making a mould from an original and pouring in a setting material (plaster, resin, bronze) - the basis of most bronze sculpture. Constructing (or assembling) joins separate pieces of material - wood, metal, card, found objects - into a structure, the dominant method of much modern sculpture.
Clay and ceramics deserve particular attention because they are so widely used. Handbuilding includes pinch (thumbing out a ball into a pot), coil (building walls from rolled ropes of clay) and slab (constructing from rolled flat sheets) methods; throwing forms symmetrical vessels on the potter's wheel. Clay is worked leather-hard, then dried, then fired to a hard 'bisque' state, and usually glazed and fired again, the glaze chemistry giving colour and a sealed surface. Understanding the stages - and that clay shrinks and can crack if dried or joined carelessly - is basic technical knowledge for any ceramic work.
Carving and construction each carry their own logic. In carving you must 'see' the form inside the block and remove material progressively from rough to fine, always keeping the whole in view because mistakes are permanent - the discipline Michelangelo described as freeing the figure from the marble. In construction you think like an engineer as well as an artist: about joints, balance, weight, armatures (internal supports) and structural integrity, since the piece must physically stand. The readymade and assemblage traditions (Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso's constructed 'Guitar', the junk sculpture of the mid-century) show how construction and the selection of found materials can themselves be the creative act.
Casting introduces the idea of the mould and the multiple. A mould is a negative taken from an original (a 'master'); a material poured or pressed into it takes the positive form. Simple one-part press moulds, two-part moulds for more complex forms, and the lost-wax process for bronze all share this negative-to-positive logic. Casting lets a fragile modelled original be translated into a durable material, allows editions of a sculpture, and can itself be expressive - Rachel Whiteread casts the empty space inside and around objects, making solid the void, so the process becomes the meaning.
Across all three-dimensional work the analysis returns to form, mass, volume, space, scale and material. A three-dimensional work exists in real space and is experienced from all around and over time as the viewer moves, so it engages the body differently from a picture. Materials carry strong associations (the permanence and preciousness of bronze and marble, the warmth of wood, the humbleness or wit of found materials), and scale transforms meaning (a monumental public sculpture versus an intimate handheld object). Choosing a process and material in three dimensions is therefore a choice about how the work will physically meet its viewer.
Worked example

Process as meaning in Rachel Whiteread

Explain how the casting process itself carries the meaning of Rachel Whiteread's 'House' (1993) or her cast interiors.

  1. 01Identify the process

    Whiteread casts negative space - the air inside a room, under a chair, or of a whole house - turning the void into a solid positive.

  2. 02Read what the process reveals

    The cast makes visible the spaces we normally overlook and inhabit, so the empty becomes tangible and strange.

  3. 03Connect to meaning

    The solidified voids evoke absence, memory and loss - the ghost of the lives once lived in the space - so the casting process is not a means to an image but the meaning itself.

  4. 04Draw the general lesson

    This shows how in three-dimensional work the choice of process (here, casting the negative) can be the conceptual core of the piece, not merely its fabrication.

Result: The example demonstrates process-as-meaning: casting negative space produces solidified absence, so the technique is inseparable from the work's meditation on memory - the sophisticated understanding of process the specification prizes.

Key points

Digital and lens-based technologies are now integral to art and design, and the specification explicitly welcomes work in digital, non-digital or mixed media across all titles. Lens-based media - photography and moving image - capture and shape images through a camera and light, and they are treated in depth in the Photography title, but every discipline uses the camera as a recording and creative tool. Digital technologies include image-editing (raster software such as Adobe Photoshop, working pixel by pixel), vector drawing and layout (Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, working with scalable shapes and typography), 3D modelling, animation and, increasingly, generative and procedural tools.
A key technical distinction is between raster and vector images. A raster (bitmap) image is a grid of pixels, so it handles photographic, continuous-tone imagery well but loses quality when enlarged (it pixelates) and is resolution-dependent. A vector image is defined by mathematical paths and points, so it is infinitely scalable without loss and gives crisp, hard-edged shapes and type - ideal for logos, illustration and layout. Understanding which to use is a real design decision: a photographer edits raster files; a logo designer works in vector. Colour models matter too - RGB (red, green, blue: additive, for screens) versus CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black: subtractive, for print) - and confusing them causes colour to shift between screen and printed output.
Digital media offer distinctive creative possibilities: non-destructive layering and masking, unlimited undo and versioning (so experimentation carries no material cost), compositing and montage, precise transformation and repetition, and filters and effects. These make digital tools powerful for developing and refining ideas rapidly and for iterating designs. But the same ease can tempt superficial 'filter' work; strong digital practice uses the tools purposefully and still shows understanding of the formal elements, composition and drawing - the software is a means, not a substitute for visual thinking.
Mixed media - combining several media in one work - is a major contemporary approach and connects the digital to the physical. Collage assembles found images, papers and materials; photomontage combines photographic fragments (as in the political photomontages of John Heartfield or the feminist collages of Hannah Hoch); and much current practice moves fluidly between the analogue and the digital - scanning hand-drawn marks into the computer, printing digital work to draw or stitch back into, layering paint over photographs. The interest of mixed media lies in the contrast and dialogue between the qualities of different media.
Working digitally and in mixed media raises questions of process and integrity that the assessment cares about. Because digital work leaves no automatic physical trail, you must deliberately evidence your development - saving iterations, screen-recording process, printing stages into the sketchbook - so that the journey of the ideas (AO1 to AO4) remains visible. And when using photographic or found source imagery, you must record it honestly, work from your own primary sources wherever possible, and transform borrowed material into a genuinely personal response rather than reproducing it - the same principle that governs developing ideas from the work of others.
Worked example

Choosing raster or vector

A student is designing a festival identity: a logo, a large printed poster with a photographic background, and social-media graphics. Which formats and colour models?

  1. 01The logo

    Design the logo in vector (Illustrator) so it scales without loss from a business card to a banner and stays crisp at any size.

  2. 02The photographic poster

    The photographic background is raster (Photoshop); place the vector logo and vector type over it, keeping resolution high (300 ppi) for print.

  3. 03Colour models

Key points

Sustained, purposeful experimentation with media is one of the clearest markers of high attainment in Assessment Objective 2. Experimentation means systematically testing materials, tools, grounds and combinations to discover their possibilities and to find those that best serve your intentions - not decorating pages with unrelated 'samples'. The strongest experimentation is directed by a question ('how can I get a broken, corroded texture?', 'what happens if I print over my drawing and then stitch into it?'), records the results honestly (including the failures, which are genuine findings), and then selects and carries the successful discoveries forward into developed work.
A productive way to structure experimentation is the sample or test sheet: a focused page that trials one variable across several attempts - the same mark in different media, one image through different print processes, a colour scheme in several palettes, a surface built in several ways. Annotating each trial with what you did and what you learned turns the sheet from a set of pretty accidents into evidence of thinking. This is how you demonstrate that your final media choices are informed by real testing rather than assumption, which is exactly what AO2 asks you to show.
Experimentation also means being willing to take creative risks and to work beyond your comfortable, familiar materials. Trying an unfamiliar process, working at an unaccustomed scale, deliberately courting accident (pouring, dripping, letting materials behave unpredictably), or combining media that seem incompatible can open directions that careful control never would. The point is not novelty for its own sake but genuine discovery - and a portfolio that shows a student stretching their material range and learning from it reads very differently from one that repeats a safe formula.
Because art materials and processes carry real hazards, safe practice is a genuine part of the subject and is expected. Solvents and some paints, fixatives and varnishes give off harmful fumes and need ventilation; cutting tools (craft knives, lino tools, chisels), the printing press, kiln and heat tools can cause injury; acids used in etching, and some pigments, glazes and casting materials, are toxic or corrosive; and dust from sanding, carving, pastel and dry clay should not be inhaled. Working safely means knowing the hazards of your materials, using guards, ventilation, gloves and masks appropriately, following instructions for equipment, and clearing up responsibly.
Alongside safety sits responsibility to materials, sources and sustainability. Increasingly, artists consider the environmental impact and ethics of their materials, reuse and recycle, and choose less toxic alternatives where they can. And whenever you experiment with imagery - photographs, found materials, other artists' work - you must keep honest records of your sources and transform them into your own response. Purposeful, safe, well-documented experimentation, in which media are tested against real intentions and the findings feed developed outcomes, is the mature practice the A-Level rewards, and it ties the whole of this topic back to the creative process.
Worked example

Turning experiments into development

A student wants a weathered, decayed surface for a project on urban decline. Plan purposeful experimentation.

  1. 01Frame the question

    State the intention as a testable question: how can I create convincing corroded, peeling, weathered surfaces in mixed media?

  2. 02Test systematically

    On sample sheets, trial rust effects, layered and sanded-back paint, wax resist, bleach on ink, collaged decayed papers and print textures - one variable per trial.

  3. 03Annotate honestly

    Record what each produced, noting that (say) sanding back layered acrylic and bleaching ink gave the most convincing decay, while others failed - a genuine finding.

  4. 04Select and develop

    Carry the two successful techniques into the developed pieces, so the final surfaces are the result of tested discovery, evidencing AO2.

Result: A guiding question, systematic sample sheets, honest annotation and a clear selection into developed work convert experimentation into evidenced development - the model of purposeful AO2 practice, safely conducted.
