Arab art, the arabesque and calligraphy (المحور الثاني، الأرابيسك)

This topic carries the second sub-theme of Edexcel's second theme, المحور الثاني: الثقافة الفنية في العالم العربي — the sub-theme the specification prints as الأرابيسك، فن عربي — with its three aspects: المهارات الفنية والحرفية من جيل لآخر, artistic and craft skills passed from one generation to the next; التغيرات في فن العمارة, changes in the art of architecture; and الخط العربي, Arabic calligraphy. It also picks up the third aspect of Theme 2's research subject, السياحة والمهرجانات والمناسبات, where that bears on heritage buildings and restored old cities. This is the most technical sub-theme in the specification and the one where precise vocabulary most obviously converts into marks: a candidate who can name a muqarnas, a mashrabiyya, a courtyard house or the Thuluth script is making claims that a candidate writing about beautiful decoration cannot make. The notes build that vocabulary in Arabic, name real monuments, real architects and real scripts, distinguish what is documented from what is interpreted, and treat the craft-transmission question as an argument rather than as nostalgia.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is accurate description with a reason: what a traditional house looks like and why it is built that way, what a calligrapher does, what materials a craft uses — with correct agreement, accurate technical nouns, and adjectives that describe rather than praise.

higher level

The full A-Level expects the technical vocabulary to be doing analytical work, and the heritage question to be handled as an argument. Why does geometry carry so much of the decorative burden? What changed in architecture, and what pressure produced the change? Is restoring an old city preservation or reconstruction, and who says which? Answers should use participles and the passive fluently, name real buildings and real scripts, and attribute every critical judgement.

Fig. 1The sub-theme's three aspects with the material each one actually contains. The emphasised branch is calligraphy, because it is the aspect the specification names in its own right and the one where the named scripts give an answer immediate specificity. Everything here is romanised or English: the figure engine emits no bidi handling, so a mixed Arabic-and-Latin label could reorder, and the Arabic for each term is given in the prose.

Key points

This topic carries Theme 2's second sub-theme, which the specification prints as الأرابيسك، فن عربي, with three aspects: craft skills passed from one generation to the next, changes in architecture, and Arabic calligraphy. Start with the word itself, because it is a false friend in both directions. الأرابيسك entered Arabic from European art history, where it names the endlessly repeatable vegetal and geometric interlace that European writers found characteristic of Islamic ornament; in Arabic the same material is more often called الزخرفة, ornament, subdivided into الزخرفة الهندسية, geometric ornament, and التوريق, vegetal scrollwork. Knowing both registers lets you read a European-influenced Arabic text and a traditional one without being confused by either.
Three technical terms give you most of what you need to describe the material accurately. المقرنص, the muqarnas, is the tiered honeycomb structure that fills the transition from a square room into a dome or the underside of a corner, and it is both structural and visual, which makes it the perfect example of ornament that is not applied but built. المشربية is the turned-wood lattice screen over a window, and its logic is environmental as much as decorative: it admits air and diffused light while blocking direct sun and preserving privacy. الخزف and القاشاني cover glazed ceramic and tilework, and الزليج is the specific cut-tile mosaic tradition of Morocco. Naming these is what a strong answer does instead of writing about beautiful patterns.
The art-historical observation that this sub-theme rests on is worth stating carefully, because it is easy to state badly. Figural imagery is generally absent from the decoration of mosques, and the decorative burden is carried instead by geometry, vegetal ornament and writing. That is a description of what is there, and it is well documented. The further claim about exactly why — how far it reflects a formal prohibition, how far a developed aesthetic preference, and how it varies between religious and secular contexts, since figural painting is abundantly attested in manuscripts and palaces — is a scholarly discussion, not a settled fact. Describe the pattern; attribute the explanation. In Arabic: يفسر بعض الباحثين هذا الغياب بـ …، بينما يشير آخرون إلى وجود التصوير في المخطوطات والقصور
Transmission is the aspect's actual question, and it is a question about institutions. Historically the skills moved through the workshop, الورشة, by apprenticeship rather than by book: the apprentice learned by doing, over years, from a master, and often within a family. What has changed is the surrounding economy — industrial production of the same objects at lower cost, urban rents that price workshops out of old city centres, and the fact that a young person with a school certificate now has other options. Set against that, heritage programmes, tourism demand for handmade objects, design schools and international recognition have kept some crafts alive and revived others. The examinable question is not whether crafts are dying but which mechanism is operating where, and that is answerable with evidence.
Worked example

Reading strategy on a concrete passage: an art-historical text at speed

Work through this passage the way you would in Paper 1 Section B, where the recommended time is 45 minutes for four questions.

  1. 01Find the claim before you find the vocabulary

The first sentence is built on لم تكن … بل …, was not … but rather …, and that frame tells you the passage's whole thesis before you have understood a single technical noun: ornament was not added to the building, it was part of its design. Reading for the frame first is the most transferable reading habit in this qualification, because Arabic argumentative prose signals its structure with a small closed set of frames — لم … بل, أما … فـ, غير أن, لا … فحسب بل. Learn the set and you can locate a thesis in five seconds.

  2. 02Decode the unknown noun from its pattern, not from a dictionary you do not have

المقرنص is defined for you in the very next clause — وهو ذلك التركيب المتدرج, and it is that tiered structure — which is the commonest way an Arabic text introduces a technical term. Even without that, its shape is informative: the مـ prefix with a following passive shape marks a passive participle, so it is something that has been done to. المتدرج is the same pattern with a Form V verb behind it, so it is something that proceeds in stages. Pattern-reading is a real skill and Appendix 2 names it under roots and word patterns.

  3. 03Read the cognate accusative as emphasis, not as a second noun

وتكرر النمط الواحد تكرارا يوحي بأنه لا يبدأ ولا ينتهي. A beginner sees تكرر and تكرارا and hunts for two ideas. There is only one: تكرارا is the cognate accusative, المفعول المطلق, and its function is to carry the adjective or the relative clause that qualifies the verb. Here the qualification is the whole relative clause يوحي بأنه لا يبدأ ولا ينتهي, suggesting that it neither begins nor ends. The single pattern repeated in a way that suggests it neither begins nor ends.

  4. 04Track أما … فـ across a long interruption

أما المقرنص، وهو ذلك التركيب المتدرج الذي يملأ الزوايا والقباب، فقد جمع بين … . The topic is announced by أما, then a long parenthetical definition intervenes, and only then does the ف resume the sentence. Students lose this sentence by treating the parenthesis as the main clause. Whenever you see أما, find the ف before you decide what the sentence says; everything between them is subordinate. جمع بين … و … is to combine, and it needs both members.

  5. 05Answer the likely question in your own words

A question here would very probably be لماذا يعد المقرنص مثالا جيدا على الزخرفة التي لا تضاف إلى البناء؟ The lifted answer would copy جمع بين الوظيفة الإنشائية والأثر البصري. The recast answer says the same thing without the passage's words: لأنه يؤدي دورا في بناء السقف نفسه في الوقت الذي يزينه فيه، فلا يمكن نزعه من دون أن يتغير المبنى. That final clause — you could not remove it without the building changing — is inference rather than retrieval, and inference is what the reading section is testing.

Result: Ornament in Islamic architecture was not an element added to the building but a part of its design. Geometric and vegetal forms covered wide surfaces, and the single pattern repeated in a way that suggests it neither begins nor ends. As for the muqarnas, that tiered structure which fills corners and domes, it combined a structural function with a visual effect. These skills passed from generation to generation inside the workshops, where the craftsman learned by practice and not from a book.

Exam focus

  • Use المقرنص, المشربية and الزليج accurately; each names a specific thing and each shows you have read about the subject (AO4).
  • Describe the absence of figural imagery as a pattern and attribute the explanation of it; the explanation is contested and the pattern is not (AO4).
  • Answer transmission as a question about institutions and economics — workshops, rents, alternatives, demand — rather than as nostalgia (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Using الأرابيسك as though it were the normal Arabic word. It is a loan from European art history; الزخرفة and its subdivisions are the ordinary Arabic terms.
  • Claiming that Islamic art forbids all images. Figural painting is abundantly attested in manuscripts and secular buildings; the generalisation is about mosque decoration.
  • Writing المهارات الفنية انتقلوا. مهارات is a non-human plural: انتقلت.
  • Treating every craft as endangered. Some have declined, some are supported by heritage and tourism programmes, and the difference is exactly what an answer should establish.

التغيرات في فن العمارة: the courtyard, the tower and what came between#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Theme 2 - الأرابيسك، فن عربي: التغيرات في فن العمارةLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Paper 1 Section A - translation into English

Key points

The second aspect is changes in the art of architecture, and the most useful way to organise it is around a single question: what problem was the building solving? The traditional urban house in much of the region was organised around a courtyard, الفناء, and every feature of it answers a climatic or social problem — thick walls and small external openings against heat, a shaded courtyard that drives air movement, a مشربية that admits air and light while preserving privacy, and in parts of the Gulf a wind catcher, الملقف or البارجيل, that pulls cooler air down into the rooms. Describing those as solutions rather than as picturesque features is the difference between an AO4 answer and a travel brochure.
What changed is documentable and mostly economic. Cheap steel, concrete and plate glass made a building type available that does not depend on local climate; rising urban land prices made building upward more profitable than building around a void; mechanical air conditioning removed the penalty for ignoring climate; and rapid population growth in cities required housing at a speed that craft construction could not supply. The result across many Arab cities is the same as in many other world cities: a historic core of courtyard building surrounded by a much larger modern city of apartment blocks and, in the wealthier states, towers. State it that way and the answer explains rather than laments.
The counter-movement is real and gives you named, checkable evidence. حسن فتحي, the Egyptian architect who died in 1989, argued for mud-brick construction and vernacular technique and built the village of New Gourna near Luxor as a demonstration; his work is discussed and disputed to this day, which makes it ideal material for an attributed argument. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture, given every three years, exists specifically to recognise building in societies with significant Muslim populations and its citations are a documented record of what has been considered successful. And in the other direction, زها حديد, the Iraqi-British architect who received the Pritzker Prize in 2004 and died in 2016, is the clearest case of an architect from the region working in an international idiom.
The Arabic here is concrete and quickly learned. العمارة architecture, المعماري architect and architectural, البناء building, الطراز style, الفناء the courtyard, الطوب اللبن mud brick, الخرسانة concrete, ناطحات السحاب skyscrapers, التخطيط العمراني urban planning, المدينة القديمة the old city, الترميم restoration, التكييف air conditioning, الحفاظ على conservation of. Grammatically this aspect is a good place to practise the internal passive, because buildings are built and restored by nobody in particular: لم يعد يبنى إلا نادرا, it is no longer built except rarely; رممت المدينة القديمة, the old city was restored. Appendix 2 names the passive in all tenses and forms, and this aspect is where it feels natural rather than forced.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section A: translation into English, worked sentence by sentence

Translate into English.

شكل here is Form II and means constituted or formed, not shaped; the object is قلب البيت التقليدي, the heart of the traditional house, in the accusative and heading a construct chain. لقرون طويلة, for long centuries, is لـ plus an indefinite genitive plural with an agreeing feminine singular adjective, because قرون is non-human. The adverbial phrase sits between verb and object, which is normal Arabic word order and awkward English. For long centuries the inner courtyard formed the heart of the traditional house in many Arab cities.

  2. 02فقد كان يوفر الظل والهواء، ويحفظ خصوصية الأسرة في الوقت نفسه

قد with كان plus an imperfect gives a past habitual: it used to provide. Both verbs, يوفر and يحفظ, hang off the single كان, which is why the second is not repeated with its own auxiliary. خصوصية الأسرة is a chain. في الوقت نفسه, at the same time, uses نفس in apposition. It used to provide shade and air, and at the same time preserve the family's privacy.

  3. 03ومع اتساع المدن وارتفاع أسعار الأرض، تراجع هذا الطراز أمام العمارة الرأسية

مع plus two verbal nouns is the standard Arabic for with the widening of and the rise of, and English will often prefer the same nominal construction — as cities expanded is also acceptable and may read better. أسعار الأرض is a chain inside a chain, the prices of the land, itself governed by ارتفاع. تراجع أمام is retreated before, and العمارة الرأسية, vertical architecture, is the ordinary Arabic phrase. As cities expanded and land prices rose, this style retreated before vertical building.

  4. 04ولم يعد يبنى إلا نادرا

لم يعد plus an imperfect gives no longer, with the jussive after لم. يبنى is the internal passive imperfect of بنى, a defective verb whose final radical is a weak letter — hence the alif maqsura ending rather than a visible ي. إلا نادرا is except rarely, and the negative plus إلا construction is Arabic's normal way of saying only: no longer built except rarely, that is, only rarely built now. Appendix 2 lists الاستثناء with إلا among the numerals and particles.

  5. 05ويحاول بعض المعماريين اليوم استعادة مبادئه من دون تقليد شكله

حاول takes either أن plus a subjunctive or a bare verbal noun as here: استعادة, recovering. من دون plus a verbal noun is without, and تقليد شكله is imitating its form. Note that Arabic has stacked three verbal nouns in nine words — استعادة, تقليد, and the مبادئ that follows — which English cannot copy and must unpack. Some architects today are trying to recover its principles without imitating its form.

  6. 06فيستعملون المشربية والفتحات المدروسة لتقليل الحاجة إلى التكييف. غير أن هذه المحاولات ما زالت محدودة أمام ضغط السوق

The ف chains the result. يستعملون is a human plural verb agreeing with بعض المعماريين. المدروسة is a passive participle used adjectivally, studied or considered, agreeing as feminine singular with the non-human plural الفتحات. لتقليل is لـ plus a verbal noun of purpose. غير أن takes an accusative subject; ما زالت plus an accusative predicate محدودة gives are still limited; ضغط السوق is market pressure. So they use the mashrabiyya and carefully considered openings to reduce the need for air conditioning. But these attempts remain limited in the face of market pressure.

Result: For long centuries the inner courtyard formed the heart of the traditional house in many Arab cities. It used to provide shade and air, and at the same time preserve the family's privacy. As cities expanded and land prices rose, this style retreated before vertical building, and it is now only rarely built. Some architects today are trying to recover its principles without imitating its form, using the mashrabiyya and carefully considered openings to reduce the need for air conditioning. But these attempts remain limited in the face of market pressure.

Exam focus

  • Ask what problem the building solved. Climate, privacy and cost explain more of the tradition than aesthetics do (AO4).
  • Name real evidence: حسن فتحي and New Gourna, the Aga Khan Award, زها حديد. Named cases beat general claims (AO4).
  • Use the internal passive for building and restoring; it is the natural voice for this aspect and it is on the prescribed grammar list (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Describing traditional architecture as beautiful without saying what it was for. The function is the analysis.
  • Treating the modern city as an imposition from outside. Land prices, population growth and construction economics are internal drivers and are documented.
  • Writing المباني القديمة رمموا. مباني is a non-human plural: رممت.
  • Attributing to حسن فتحي a general success or failure. His work is genuinely disputed; report the debate.

الخط العربي: the scripts, and the letter as an object#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Theme 2 - الأرابيسك، فن عربي: الخط العربيLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Appendix 2 - verbs: active and passive participle

Key points

The third aspect is Arabic calligraphy, and it is the aspect where a small amount of accurate knowledge goes furthest, because the named scripts are finite, distinguishable and documented. الكوفي, Kufic, is the angular early script, and its monumental forms are what you see cut into stone on the oldest surviving buildings. النسخ, Naskh, is the rounded book hand that became the basis of ordinary printed Arabic, which is why it looks the most familiar. الثلث, Thuluth, is the large, sweeping ceremonial script used for architectural inscriptions and titles. الديواني, Diwani, is the dense, curving chancery script of the Ottoman administration. الرقعة, Ruqʿah, is the compact everyday hand most people actually write with. And المغربي, the Maghribi family, is the distinct North African tradition with its own letterforms.
The reason calligraphy belongs in an artistic-culture theme rather than a linguistic one is that the letter functions as a plastic object and not only as a sign. Written text carries the decorative burden in contexts where figural imagery is absent, so an inscription is simultaneously something to read and something to look at, and a great deal of it is placed where it cannot comfortably be read at all — high on a wall, around a dome, at the top of a minaret. That is a documented fact about placement and it licenses a genuinely analytical claim: يخاطب النقش العين قبل أن يخاطب القارئ, the inscription addresses the eye before it addresses the reader. Say that, and you have made an argument rather than described a decoration.
The tradition has a documented history worth naming with the right degree of caution. Later tradition associates the codification of proportioned script, الخط المنسوب, with ابن مقلة in the tenth century, and its refinement with ابن البواب and later ياقوت المستعصمي; scholars debate how much of that attribution is retrospective, so say associates and not invented. In the twentieth century the الحروفية movement — artists across several Arab countries who used the letter as the material of a painting rather than as writing — is a well-documented development and a perfect subject for an argued paragraph, because critics disagree about whether it freed the letter or emptied it.
Grammatically this aspect is the best place in the subject to master the two participles, which Appendix 2 lists explicitly. The active participle, اسم الفاعل, names the doer: كاتب a writer, ناسخ a copyist, and for derived forms it takes the مـ prefix, مزخرِف one who decorates. The passive participle, اسم المفعول, names the thing done to: مكتوب written, منقوش inscribed, and for derived forms مزخرَف decorated. Both behave as adjectives and agree fully, and both are constantly used where English would need a relative clause. النص المنقوش على الجدار — the text inscribed on the wall — is five words for eight, and that compression is exactly what the AO3 range grid is looking for.
Worked example

One grammar decision, walked through: choosing between the two participles

Put into Arabic: the decorated wall, the decorating craftsman, the inscribed text, the calligrapher writing the inscription, and a written text that has not been read. Then explain how a reader without vowel marks knows which participle is which.

  1. 01Build both participles from a Form I root

From كتب: the active participle is كاتب, one who writes, on the pattern فاعل; the passive participle is مكتوب, written, on the pattern مفعول. Both are ordinary nouns and adjectives and both decline and agree normally. النص المكتوب, the written text — masculine singular definite adjective agreeing with النص. الكاتب, the writer, used as a noun. This much is regular and the two patterns never overlap in Form I.

  2. 02Build both from a derived form, where they look alike

From the Form II verb زخرف, to decorate, both participles begin with مـ. The active is مزخرِف and the passive مزخرَف, and the only written difference is a vowel mark that unvocalised Arabic does not show. الجدار المزخرف is therefore the decorated wall and الحرفي المزخرف would be a decorated craftsman, which is nonsense — so context resolves it, and Arabic readers resolve it instantly. For the craftsman who decorates you would normally write الحرفي الذي يزخرف or simply الزخرفي or النقاش, choosing a different word rather than relying on an invisible vowel.

  3. 03Use the participle where English uses a relative clause

النص المنقوش على الجدار — the text inscribed on the wall. English needs which is inscribed; Arabic needs nothing, because منقوش is an adjective agreeing with النص in gender, number, case and definiteness. This is the single most useful compression available in written Arabic and it is worth building a habit around: whenever you are about to write الذي plus a passive verb, ask whether a passive participle would do the job.

  4. 04Watch the definiteness rule that governs it

An adjective, including a participle, must match its noun in definiteness. نص منقوش is an inscribed text, indefinite; النص المنقوش is the inscribed text, definite. What you cannot write is النص منقوش, because that is no longer a noun phrase at all — it is a sentence, the text is inscribed, with the participle as predicate. That distinction between attribute and predicate is carried entirely by the article, and misplacing it changes a phrase into a sentence.

  5. 05Handle the negative, which is where the construction breaks

For a written text that has not been read, the participle cannot be negated directly. Arabic reaches either for غير plus a genitive — نص مكتوب غير مقروء, a written text, unread — which Appendix 2 lists under adjective negation; or for a relative clause, نص مكتوب لم يقرأ, with لم plus the jussive of the passive. Both are correct; غير is more compact and reads as more formal. Knowing that you have two routes, and that the participle route stops at the negative, is what keeps a sentence from going wrong mid-clause.

Result: الجدار المزخرف; الحرفي الذي يزخرف; النص المنقوش; الخطاط الذي يكتب النقش; نص مكتوب غير مقروء. The active participle names the doer and the passive participle the thing done to; in Form I they look different, in the derived forms they differ only by an invisible vowel and context decides; both agree fully and both must match their noun in definiteness or the phrase becomes a sentence; and neither can be negated directly, so use غير plus a genitive or a relative clause with لم.

Exam focus

  • Name and distinguish at least three scripts. Kufic, Naskh and Thuluth alone will carry a paragraph (AO4).
  • Make the placement argument: much monumental inscription is sited where it cannot easily be read, which tells you what it is for (AO4).
  • Use participles instead of relative clauses wherever you can: النص المنقوش, المباني المزخرفة, الحرف المكتوب (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Saying that Kufic is old and the others are new. All the named scripts have long histories; Kufic is the earliest in form, not the only historical one.
  • Asserting that ابن مقلة invented proportioned script. Tradition associates it with him; the attribution is discussed by scholars, so report it as an association.
  • Confusing the two participles. مزخرِف decorates; مزخرَف is decorated, and in unvocalised writing only the sense tells you which is meant.
  • Treating calligraphy as purely religious. It appears on secular buildings, on coins, on ceramics and in contemporary painting.

التراث والترميم: heritage, restoration and the visitor#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Theme 2 - الأرابيسك، فن عربي, with الاحتفالات والمناسبات research subject aspect 3: السياحة والمهرجانات والمناسباتLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Paper 1 Section C - writing (research question)

Key points

The craft, architecture and calligraphy aspects all converge on one live question, and it is the best argued material in Theme 2: what does it mean to preserve a building or a quarter, and who is it preserved for? Several historic Arab city centres are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List — among them the medina of Fez and the medina of Marrakech in Morocco, the medina of Tunis, the old city of Sanaa in Yemen, historic Cairo and the old city of Damascus. Inscription is a documented fact with a date attached, and it brings both obligations and money. What it does not settle is what should happen next, and that is where the argument lives.
The argument has recognisable sides that you can name and attribute. One position holds that a historic quarter is a physical fabric to be conserved, so that intervention should be minimal and reversible and new building inside it should be restrained. Another holds that a quarter is a place where people live, so that preserving the fabric while its residents leave for housing with modern services preserves the wrong thing; on this reading a medina emptied of residents and filled with guesthouses has been conserved into a museum. A third emphasises that restoration is expensive, that tourism is the realistic source of the money, and that a building nobody visits will not be funded. All three are held by serious people, and an answer that names all three and then chooses is doing exactly what the AO4 grid describes.
Craft transmission attaches directly to this question, which is why the aspect belongs here rather than in a separate box. A restoration programme that specifies traditional materials and traditional technique creates demand for the very skills that the first aspect asks about, and several documented programmes have deliberately trained craftsmen as part of the work. A restoration that uses cement and industrial tile does not. That gives you a concrete, non-nostalgic way to argue about craft survival: الترميم بالمواد التقليدية يخلق طلبا على المهارة نفسها، أما الترميم بالمواد الصناعية فيحفظ الشكل ويفقد الصنعة — restoration with traditional materials creates demand for the skill itself, while restoration with industrial materials preserves the form and loses the craft.
The vocabulary for this section is small and worth having exactly. التراث heritage, التراث العالمي world heritage, قائمة التراث العالمي the World Heritage List, الترميم restoration, الحفاظ على conservation of, المدينة القديمة the old city or medina, المباني التاريخية historic buildings, الأصالة authenticity, إعادة البناء reconstruction, الزائر the visitor, السكان الأصليون the original residents. One distinction is worth drilling because it is the argument in miniature: الترميم is restoration of what exists, and إعادة البناء is rebuilding what does not. Asking of any project أهو ترميم أم إعادة بناء — is this restoration or reconstruction — is a question that opens an argument in five words.
Worked example

From a bare fact to a paragraph of argued Arabic

You have one fact: several historic Arab city centres are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and have been the subject of large restoration programmes. Build it into a paragraph that argues rather than reports.

  1. 01State the fact in the passive, because the agent is not the point

أدرجت مدن قديمة عدة في المنطقة على قائمة التراث العالمي، ونفذت فيها برامج ترميم واسعة. أدرجت is the internal passive of أدرج, Form IV, were inscribed, and نفذت is the internal passive of نفذ, Form II, were carried out. Both are feminine singular: أدرجت agrees with the non-human plural مدن, and نفذت with the non-human plural برامج. Using the passive twice keeps the sentence about the cities rather than about the organisations, which is where you want the reader's attention.

  2. 02Deny the conclusion the fact seems to imply

غير أن الإدراج في حد ذاته لا يجيب عن السؤال الأهم: لمن يرمم الحي القديم؟ غير أن with an accusative subject. في حد ذاته, in itself, is a fixed phrase and a very useful hedge. لا يجيب عن is does not answer, with the preposition عن which أجاب requires. And the question is put in Arabic in five words — لمن يرمم الحي القديم — where لـ plus من fuses to لمن and يرمم is the passive. Denying the easy inference is what turns a fact into a problem.

  3. 03Set out two of the positions and attribute both

يرى بعض المختصين أن الأولوية للنسيج العمراني نفسه، فيدعون إلى تدخل محدود يمكن التراجع عنه. ويرى آخرون أن الحي مكان يسكنه الناس، وأن ترميم المباني مع رحيل سكانها يحفظ الشكل ويفقد المضمون. دعا إلى takes إلى. يمكن التراجع عنه is a relative clause without a pronoun after the indefinite تدخل. يسكنه الناس is another such clause after the indefinite مكان, with the resumptive pronoun ه attached to the verb, which Arabic requires and English does not.

  4. 04Give the third position its full strength before answering it

ويذكر فريق ثالث بحقيقة عملية: الترميم مكلف، والسياحة هي المصدر الواقعي لتمويله، والمبنى الذي لا يزوره أحد لا يجد من يدفع من أجله. Notice that this is the position an essay is most tempted to caricature, and giving it its strongest form is what the AO4 grid means by evaluation. الذي لا يزوره أحد is a relative clause with a definite antecedent, so the pronoun الذي is required and the resumptive ه appears on the verb — the exact mirror of the previous step's indefinite clauses, and worth noticing as a pair.

  5. 05Decide, and say what would change your mind

وأرى أن الحكم يتوقف على شرط واحد: هل ينص المشروع على استعمال المواد والتقنيات التقليدية؟ فإن فعل، خلق طلبا على المهارة نفسها وحفظ الصنعة مع الشكل؛ وإن لم يفعل، بقي الحي واجهة. نص على is to stipulate. إن فعل … وإن لم يفعل … is a paired conditional with the perfect and then لم plus the jussive, and it is the cleanest way in Arabic to make a judgement conditional on a testable criterion. Ending on a criterion rather than an opinion is what separates the top band from the one below it.

Exam focus

  • Name the three positions on restoration — fabric, residents, funding — and then choose between them with a reason (AO4).
  • Distinguish الترميم from إعادة البناء and ask which any given project is (AO4).
  • Tie craft survival to restoration specifications; it is the non-nostalgic version of the transmission argument (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Assuming a famous old city is on the World Heritage List. Check the ones you name; the list is specific and datable.
  • Treating tourism as the villain. It is very often the funding mechanism, and the honest answer says so before criticising it.
  • Writing المدن القديمة رمم. مدن is a non-human plural: رممت
  • Confusing الأصالة with القدم. Authenticity is a claim about faithfulness to the original; age is a fact about date.

Active revision

اختر مدينة قديمة واحدة في بلد عربي واكتب بالعربية نحو مئتين وسبعين كلمة عن ترميمها. اعرض ثلاثة مواقف مختلفة من الترميم وانسب كلا منها إلى أصحابه، ثم اختر موقفا وعلله، واختم بجملة تحدد الشروط التي يتغير عندها حكمك

Exam technique: earning the AO3 range mark on purpose#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Paper 2 - range of grammatical structures and vocabulary (AO3), 15 marks per essayLPPearson Edexcel 9AA0 Appendix 2 - grammar list

Key points

Range is marked separately from accuracy, and in Paper 2 it is worth 15 marks per essay against accuracy's 10, which makes it the single largest AO3 component in the qualification. The grid's language is explicit about what it is looking for: variation in the use of grammatical structures, different types of complex language, variation of vocabulary, expression that is not repetitive. What it is not looking for is difficulty for its own sake. A sentence is complex in the grid's sense when it does more work — subordinates, qualifies, contrasts, conditions — not when it is longer. That distinction is what makes range trainable rather than mysterious.
The trainable version is a checklist drawn from Appendix 2 itself. Before an examination, reduce the grammar list to a personal shortlist of structures you can produce reliably under pressure, and aim to place several of them deliberately in any extended piece of writing. A workable shortlist for this qualification: كان and its sisters with an accusative predicate; إن and its sisters; the internal passive; a verbal noun doing the work of an English clause; a relative clause, with the pronoun after a definite antecedent and without one after an indefinite; the cognate accusative; the tamyiz; a conditional, whether with إذا, إن, لو or لولا; a comparative or superlative; and غير plus a genitive to negate an adjective.
Vocabulary range is the half candidates neglect, and it is easier to fix than syntax. The grid mentions repetitive expression explicitly, and the commonest cause is a small verb inventory: an entire essay built on قال, كان, عمل and جيد. Build a substitution set for the five verbs you overuse. Instead of قال: ذكر, أشار إلى, أوضح, أكد, لاحظ, رأى. Instead of مهم: بالغ الأهمية, جوهري, حاسم, لافت. Instead of كثير: عدد كبير من, نسبة معتبرة من, واسع الانتشار. Five substitution sets learned properly will change a range mark more reliably than any amount of extra reading.
The one thing that will not work is bolting complexity onto a finished draft. A conditional inserted where no condition is meant, or a cognate accusative attached to a verb that does not want one, reads as decoration and costs accuracy marks without gaining range ones, because the grid marks range and accuracy separately but the examiner reads one text. Plan for range at the point of planning: decide before writing that paragraph two will contain the contrast and therefore the concessive, that paragraph three will contain the mechanism and therefore the passive and the verbal noun, and that the conclusion will contain the condition. Range placed by design is invisible; range bolted on is conspicuous.
Worked example

The same paragraph twice: flat, then rebuilt from the grammar list

Two versions of a paragraph on Arabic calligraphy. The content is identical. Compare them structure by structure and see exactly where the 15-mark range grid finds something to reward.

  1. 01The flat version, and what the grid sees

الخط العربي فن قديم. الناس يحبونه. هو موجود في المساجد وفي الكتب. اليوم بعض الفنانين يستعملون الحروف في اللوحات. هذا شيء جيد. Every sentence is accurate; nothing here would lose an accuracy mark. But there are five nominal or simple verbal sentences in a row, no subordination of any kind, no passive, no verbal noun, no conditional, no contrast, and the evaluative vocabulary is جيد. The range grid reads this as limited variation of straightforward structures with repetitive expression, which is its bottom band, however clean the accuracy is.

  2. 02Move one: open with a superlative and a tamyiz

يعد الخط العربي من أقدم الفنون الإسلامية وأكثرها انتشارا. يعد, is considered, is more formal than هو. من أقدم plus a definite genitive plural is the standard Arabic superlative-of-a-group construction. And أكثرها انتشارا is a comparative followed by the accusative of specification, التمييز — greater in respect of spread — which Appendix 2 names explicitly and which does in three words what a relative clause would need eight for.

  3. 03Move two: passive, plus a result clause with حتى

وقد استعمل في تزيين المساجد والمخطوطات على السواء، حتى صار الحرف نفسه عنصرا زخرفيا لا وسيلة كتابة فحسب. استعمل is the internal passive; تزيين is a verbal noun in the genitive after في; على السواء is alike. حتى with a perfect verb expresses result, to the point that. صار takes the accusative predicate عنصرا زخرفيا. And لا … فحسب, not merely, sets up a contrast without needing a second sentence. That is four structures in one sentence and none of them is ornamental.

  4. 04Move three: a negative, a time clause, and a relative clause after an indefinite

ولم يقتصر الأمر على الماضي: فمنذ منتصف القرن العشرين ظهر فنانون جعلوا من الحرف مادة للوحة، فيما عرف بالحروفية. لم plus the jussive. منذ plus a genitive time expression. فنانون is a sound masculine plural in the nominative as subject, so ون and not ين — one of the most visible case decisions available. جعلوا من الحرف مادة is a relative clause with no pronoun because فنانون is indefinite. فيما عرف بـ, in what became known as, uses the passive again.

  5. 05Move four: a concessive with two attributed positions, and a relative clause inside it

ورغم أن بعض النقاد رأوا في ذلك تفريغا للحرف من معناه، فإن آخرين اعتبروه امتدادا طبيعيا لتقليد كان الحرف فيه دائما أكثر من صوت. رغم أن takes an accusative subject and its main clause is resumed with فإن, the emphatic إن, also with an accusative subject. رأى في … تفريغا and اعتبره امتدادا are both double-object constructions. لتقليد كان الحرف فيه … is a relative clause after an indefinite antecedent with the resumptive فيه. The paragraph now carries a superlative, a tamyiz, two passives, a result clause, a negative jussive, a sound masculine plural in the nominative, three relative clauses of two different kinds, and a concessive with attribution — with no more content than the flat version had.

Exam focus

  • Range is what the sentence does, not how long it is. Subordinating, qualifying, contrasting and conditioning are the moves the grid names (AO3).
  • Carry a personal shortlist from Appendix 2 into the exam and place items deliberately in the planning, not in the editing (AO3).
  • Fix vocabulary repetition with substitution sets for your five most overused words; it is the cheapest range gain available (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing longer sentences and calling it range. A long coordinated string of و is one structure repeated.
  • Inserting a conditional or a cognate accusative that the meaning does not need. It costs accuracy and gains nothing.
  • Using the same reporting verb throughout. قال five times is exactly the repetitive expression the grid penalises.
  • Treating range as a Paper 2 concern only. Paper 1 Section C and Paper 3 question 5(c) are each marked for accuracy and range together, out of 10.

Active revision
