This topic carries the first sub-theme of Edexcel's second theme, المحور الثاني: الثقافة الفنية في العالم العربي, which is الموسيقى, with its three aspects: أنواع الموسيقى والأغاني التقليدية, الثقافة الشعبية والموسيقية and دور الموسيقى والأغنية. It also carries Theme 2's research subject, الاحتفالات والمناسبات في إحدى الدول العربية, because celebration and music are the same material seen from two angles and because a student who chooses that research subject will need both. Theme 2 is the artistic-culture theme, and the reason it repays study is that it is the one place in the specification where technical vocabulary does most of the analytical work: a candidate who can name a maqam, an iqaa or a muwashshah is making claims that a candidate writing about beautiful melodies cannot make. The notes therefore build a working critical vocabulary in Arabic, name real traditions, real festivals and real musicians rather than gesturing at Arab music in general, and keep the honesty rules of the whole subject — twenty-odd countries with different repertoires, no invented statistic, every evaluation attributed.

basic level
At first-year standard the expectation is accurate description with a personal response: what instruments are used, what a well-known singer is known for, what happens at an Eid or at a wedding, what the student likes and why — with secure agreement, correct nisba adjectives, and enough vocabulary to be specific rather than general.
higher level
The full A-Level expects technical vocabulary used as analysis and cultural claims that are attributed. What does naming a maqam allow you to say that praising a melody does not? Whose tradition is it, and where? Which changes are documented and which are asserted? Answers must use the critical vocabulary accurately, must name real repertoires and real festivals, and must weigh the standard argument about modernisation rather than repeating one side of it.

A working vocabulary for writing about Arab music
Cultural writing in Arabic runs on nisba adjectives, and this sub-theme is full of them. Build the phrases the Andalusi musical tradition, traditional popular songs and the Egyptian musical heritage, and justify every ending.
A nisba adjective is made from a noun by adding the ending ـي, and it means belonging to or characterised by. الأندلس gives أندلسي, مصر gives مصري, الشعب gives شعبي, التقليد gives تقليدي, الموسيقى gives موسيقي. Two formation rules catch people out. A final ة is dropped before the ending, so مدينة gives مدني. And a feminine or broken plural in the base noun does not survive: from آلات you do not build آلاتي but return to the singular.
التقليد الموسيقي الأندلسي — the Andalusi musical tradition. Both adjectives are masculine singular and definite because التقليد is masculine singular and definite, and the definite article must be repeated on each adjective in a noun-adjective phrase; Arabic does not allow التقليد الموسيقي أندلسي. The feminine nisba adds ة: الموسيقى الأندلسية. And a non-human plural takes a feminine singular adjective, so الأغاني التقليدية and not الأغاني التقليديون.
الأغاني الشعبية التقليدية — traditional popular songs. Arabic puts the adjective after the noun and, when there is more than one, the order is looser than in English but the closest-bound adjective normally comes first. Where English says traditional popular songs, Arabic will usually put الشعبية first because it classifies the genre and التقليدية qualifies it. Both carry the article, both are feminine singular for the non-human plural الأغاني, and if you needed to join them explicitly you would insert و.
التراث الموسيقي المصري — the Egyptian musical heritage — is a noun with two adjectives, not a chain, so all three words carry the article. But تراث الموسيقى المصرية is a chain, the heritage of Egyptian music, and it means something different: there تراث has no article, الموسيقى is genitive, and المصرية agrees with الموسيقى, not with تراث. One and the same set of words gives two different phrases depending on whether you build a chain or a noun-adjective phrase, and the article pattern is what tells the reader which you built.
The reason to master this is that a nisba is often the whole argument. Writing الموشح شكل غنائي أندلسي الأصل — the muwashshah is a song form Andalusi in origin — packs a historical claim into two words, and أندلسي الأصل is a construction worth stealing: an adjective plus a specifying noun in the accusative, which Appendix 2 calls التمييز, the accusative of specification. Compare عربي الأصل, مصري النشأة, شعبي الطابع. Each is compact, precise and unmistakably the register of cultural writing.
Result: التقليد الموسيقي الأندلسي; الأغاني الشعبية التقليدية; التراث الموسيقي المصري, against تراث الموسيقى المصرية. A nisba is formed with ـي, drops a final ة, agrees fully in gender, number, case and definiteness, takes a feminine singular form after a non-human plural, and repeats the article on every adjective in a noun-adjective phrase but never on the first term of a construct chain.

You have one fact: cassette tape made recording and distribution far cheaper than broadcasting had been. Build it into a paragraph that explains a consequence rather than asserting one, and that is reusable in Paper 1 Section C or Paper 3 Section B.
خفض الشريط الصوتي تكلفة التسجيل والتوزيع خفضا كبيرا. خفض is a Form II causative from خفض, to lower, and takes a direct object. تكلفة التسجيل والتوزيع is a construct chain whose first term carries no article and whose two coordinated second terms are both genitive. خفضا كبيرا is the cognate accusative, المفعول المطلق, which Appendix 2 names explicitly: repeating the verbal noun of the verb in the accusative with an adjective is how Arabic says greatly, and it is worth one deliberate use per piece of writing.
ولم يعد الوصول إلى الجمهور يمر عبر الإذاعة وحدها. لم يعد plus an imperfect verb gives no longer does; the jussive after لم shortens يعود to يعد. الوصول إلى is a verbal noun with its preposition. The sentence does not yet say what happened — it says what stopped being necessary, which is the mechanism. Getting the mechanism into its own sentence is what allows the next sentence to be a consequence rather than a repetition.
فانتشرت أنواع نشأت خارج المؤسسات الرسمية، مثل الراي في غرب الجزائر. The ف is a ف of consequence: and so. انتشرت is feminine singular because أنواع is a non-human plural. نشأت خارج المؤسسات الرسمية is a relative clause with no relative pronoun, because its antecedent أنواع is indefinite — a rule Appendix 2 states directly and one that English speakers systematically overapply in the wrong direction. مثل introduces the example, and naming a real genre and its region is what converts a general claim into evidence.
وقد اختلف النقاد في تقييم هذه الأنواع: فمنهم من رأى فيها تعبيرا عن واقع لم يكن مسموعا، ومنهم من رأى أنها تفتقر إلى الجودة الفنية. منهم من is the idiomatic frame for some of them are those who and is much better Arabic than بعضهم يقول. رأى في … تعبيرا عن … is to see in something an expression of something, with the accusative object of رأى. لم يكن مسموعا is لم plus the jussive of كان with an accusative passive participle as predicate — four grammar points in six words, all of them on the prescribed list.
وأيا كان الحكم، فإن الخلاف نفسه دليل على أن الشريط نقل سلطة النشر من المؤسسات إلى الأفراد. أيا كان is whatever it may be, a concessive built on أي in the accusative plus كان. فإن opens the main clause with the emphatic إن, which takes an accusative subject. دليل على أن is evidence that, and نقل سلطة النشر من … إلى … states the mechanism plainly rather than through غير, whose unvocalised form is also the ordinary word for other than. The move here is the strongest one available on contested cultural material: instead of picking a side, observe what the existence of the argument proves — and that observation is itself an analytical claim, which is what the AO4 grid asks for.

Translate into English.
لم plus the jussive of كان is a past negative, and يوما — literally a day — after a negative means ever: has never been. مجرد is a noun in a construct chain with ترفيه, mere entertainment, and the whole chain is the accusative predicate of كان. Notice that the predicate's case is invisible here because مجرد ends in a consonant and the phrase is unvocalised; you know it is accusative from the grammar, not from the writing. Arab song has never been mere entertainment.
قد with a perfect verb marks completion. ارتبط ب is to be linked to and is a Form VIII verb; the ت of Form VIII assimilates in some roots, which is worth watching for when you look a verb up. ارتبطت is feminine singular agreeing with الأغنية. الكبرى is the feminine superlative agreeing with the non-human plural المناسبات. من … إلى … is used here to enumerate a range rather than a movement, exactly as English uses from … to …. It has been bound up with the great occasions of people's lives, from weddings to festivals.
حملت, it carried, again feminine singular for الأغنية. في كثير من الأحيان is the fixed phrase for often. نصا شعريا is the accusative object with its agreeing nisba adjective, and the alif of the accusative is visible on both words. له قيمته المستقلة is a nominal relative clause with no relative pronoun, because نصا is indefinite: a poetic text which has its own independent value. English needs the relative pronoun that Arabic omits. And it has often carried a poetic text with a value of its own.
منذ plus a verbal noun in the genitive is since. صار is a sister of كان and here takes an imperfect verb as its predicate rather than a noun, giving came to: صار … يصل, came to reach. ملايين المستمعين is a construct chain; ملايين is a broken plural of مليون. بلدان مختلفة is indefinite noun plus indefinite adjective, and مختلفة is feminine singular because بلدان is a non-human plural. Since the spread of radio a single voice came to reach millions of listeners in different countries.
The ف is again consequence. تكونت is Form V, to be formed, feminine singular. ذاكرة موسيقية مشتركة is an indefinite noun with two agreeing indefinite adjectives. لم تكن موجودة is a relative clause without a pronoun after the indefinite ذاكرة, with لم plus the jussive of كان and an accusative predicate موجودة. من قبل means previously and is distinct from قبل plus a noun. And so a shared musical memory was formed that had not existed before.
غير أن is however, with an accusative subject. اختلف حول is to disagree about, here with a human plural subject and so a plural verb, النقاد يختلفون. ما إذا كان is the standard frame for whether, and the alternative is introduced by أم, not أو — أم is the interrogative or used inside a genuine choice, and getting it right is a real accuracy marker. أضعف is Form IV, weakened; حفظها is preserved it. But critics disagree about whether this spread weakened local traditions or preserved them.

Your research is on one country and one of your findings is that the drama series commissioned for Ramadan have become a major annual media event with substantial advertising attached. The Section C statement is: «فقدت المناسبات التقليدية معناها بسبب التجارة.» Build the paragraph that answers it.
Documented: there is an annual production season of drama series tied to Ramadan, they attract large audiences, and they carry advertising. Judged: whether that constitutes a loss of meaning. The statement asserts the judgement as a fact, which is exactly what a Section C statement is designed to do, and the answer's whole quality depends on refusing to accept the framing without examining it. Write your first sentence about the word فقدت, not about Ramadan.
يعتمد الحكم على معنى كلمة «فقدت»: هل تعني أن الممارسة اختفت، أم أن ما يحيط بها تغير؟ Two clean moves. The alternative question with أم forces the distinction. And the distinction is the real one: nothing about the fast itself has changed, while what surrounds it has, and conflating those two is what makes the statement sound truer than it is. Arabic quotation marks around the quoted word are the low double angle marks, which is the standard convention.
فالصيام نفسه لم يتغير، غير أن حول رمضان نشأ موسم درامي وإعلاني ضخم، تنتج فيه المسلسلات خصيصا للشهر. نفسه is the emphatic, the fast itself. لم يتغير is لم plus the jussive. نشأ حول is arose around, with the prepositional phrase fronted for emphasis. تنتج is an internal passive with خصيصا, specially, as an adverbial accusative. Every word here is describable and none is evaluative, which is what makes the next sentence's evaluation credible.
ويرى بعض الكتاب في ذلك تجارة ألحقت نفسها بعبادة، بينما يرى آخرون أن مناسبة دينية أنتجت شكلا ثقافيا شعبيا دائما، كما حدث في تقاليد أخرى خارج المنطقة. رأى في … تجارة is the accusative-object frame again. ألحقت نفسها ب is a Form IV verb with a reflexive object, attached itself to. The second reading is the one candidates never supply, and supplying it is what separates a top-band answer from a competent one; the comparison to traditions outside the region is a legitimate analytical move as long as it is offered as a comparison and not as a claim about causes.
وأرى أن الحكم يتوقف على من يتحدث: فالتاجر والمشاهد والداعية لا يقيسون المعنى بالمقياس نفسه. ولذلك فإن القول بأن المناسبات فقدت معناها حكم عام أكثر مما ينبغي في بلد واحد، فضلا عن المنطقة كلها. يتوقف على من يتحدث, depends on who is speaking, resolves the argument by identifying that the disagreement is about the criterion rather than the facts. فضلا عن, let alone, escalates the point cleanly. And the final clause does the job that this whole subject requires: it refuses to generalise from one country to the region.

Translate into Arabic. The festival began forty years ago as a local celebration of folk music, and for a long time its audience came from the surrounding villages. Since it started to attract visitors from abroad, the programme has been changed so that better-known singers appear on the main evenings. Some of the older musicians complain that the festival no longer belongs to the town, while the organisers reply that without the visitors it would not survive.
بدأ المهرجان قبل أربعين عاما احتفالا محليا بالموسيقى الشعبية. مهرجان is the established word and must not be transliterated. قبل أربعين عاما is the standard way to say ago: قبل plus the number, with the counted noun in the accusative singular after a number from eleven upward. احتفالا محليا is a hal — a circumstantial accusative describing the state in which it began — which is a construction Appendix 2 names and which is more idiomatic here than كـ. Note the accusative alif on both احتفالا and محليا.
وكان جمهوره لفترة طويلة يأتي من القرى المجاورة. كان plus an imperfect gives the English past habitual came, which a bare perfect جاء would not. جمهوره carries the possessive suffix; the noun then needs no article. لفترة طويلة is an indefinite prepositional phrase. القرى المجاورة is a non-human plural with a feminine singular adjective, and القرى is one of the invariable nouns whose final alif maqsura does not change for case — a detail Appendix 2 lists under indeclinable and defective nouns.
ومنذ أن بدأ يجتذب زوارا من الخارج. منذ أن plus a verb is since, where منذ plus a noun would need a verbal noun instead. بدأ takes a following imperfect with no أن, as it did earlier. اجتذب is Form VIII, to attract. زوارا is a broken plural in the accusative with the alif, and it is indefinite because the English is indefinite. من الخارج, from abroad, is a fixed phrase and is far better than translating abroad as a place name.
غير البرنامج ليظهر مطربون أشهر في الليالي الرئيسية. غير is the internal passive of the Form II verb, has been changed, and it lets you avoid naming an agent the English does not name. لـ plus the subjunctive expresses purpose: ليظهر, with the final vowel invisible here but the ن of a plural verb would drop. مطربون is a sound masculine plural in the nominative as the subject of يظهر, so it ends in ون and not ين — the single most visible case decision in the sentence. أشهر is the comparative of شهير, invariable, and follows its noun as an adjective.
ويشكو بعض الموسيقيين الأكبر سنا من أن المهرجان لم يعد ملكا للمدينة، بينما يرد المنظمون بأنه لولا الزوار لما استمر. شكا من is to complain of. الأكبر سنا is a superlative with a tamyiz, the accusative of specification: greater in age. لم يعد ملكا للمدينة uses the accusative predicate again. رد ب is to reply with. And لولا … لما … is the counterfactual conditional: لولا takes a noun in the nominative and its answer takes لما plus a perfect verb — were it not for the visitors it would not have continued. That construction alone is worth several range marks and is worth memorising as a unit.
