This topic carries Paper 2 Section C, the 45-mark essay on a prescribed film. It is entered only by a candidate who answered on exactly one literary text in Section B: a student may answer on two literary texts, in which case Section C is not attempted, or on one literary text and one film, in which case they answer once in each; answering on two films is not permitted. The essay is marked by the same three grids as the literary essay — critical and analytical response, AO4, out of 20; range of grammatical structures and vocabulary, AO3, out of 15; and accuracy of language, AO3, out of 10 — with the same guide length of 320 to 370 words, the same 65 minutes, and the same requirement to justify every point of view with evidence from the work. Appendix 1 lists three feature films. These notes teach the method, the specifically cinematic vocabulary in Urdu that the range grid rewards, and the located-scene technique, and name the films accurately without inventing anything about them.

basic level
At first-year standard the expectation is an accurate account of a film in Urdu: what kind of film it is, who its principal figures are, what its main concerns are, and a supported personal response, with enough technical vocabulary to name a shot or a use of music rather than describe it.
higher level
The full A-Level expects analysis of how the film means, not only what it shows. Every claim anchored to a located scene; camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scène used as evidence; the social and cultural setting treated as part of the film's argument; and Urdu of deliberate range, because 25 of the 45 marks are for language.

Suppose the question reads: ’اِس فلم میں ہدایت کار نے سماجی فاصلے کو کن سینمائی ذرائع سے پیش کیا ہے؟ تجزیہ کیجیے۔‘ Decode it.
کن سینمائی ذرائع سے, by what cinematic means. The question is not asking whether social distance appears in the film; it is asking through what techniques it is conveyed. An essay that answers with events and relationships has answered a different question. This kind of stem is common in Section C precisely because film is the medium where technique is visible, and it is the reason the technical vocabulary is worth learning.
The means are finite and can be listed in thirty seconds: کیمرے کا زاویہ اور فاصلہ, framing and distance; منظر آرائی, mise-en-scène including set, costume and props; روشنی, lighting; ادارت, editing, including what is cut against what; آواز, sound, including پس منظر موسیقی and خاموشی; and نغمہ, the song sequence. Six categories. Choose the three your film actually uses for this purpose rather than the three you find easiest to describe.
For distance: اگر دو کردار ایک ہی فریم میں ہوں مگر اُن کے درمیان کوئی چیز حائل ہو تو فاصلہ دکھایا جا رہا ہے، کہا نہیں جا رہا. For editing: اگر ایک منظر کو دوسرے کے مقابل کاٹا جائے تو موازنہ خود بخود قائم ہو جاتا ہے. For sound: موسیقی کا نہ ہونا بھی ایک فیصلہ ہے. Each is a general principle about the medium that your located scenes will then instantiate.
ہدایت کار سماجی فاصلے کو مکالمے سے کم اور فریم، ادارت اور خاموشی سے زیادہ پیش کرتے ہیں۔ The thesis names three means, commits to a ranking — less through dialogue, more through the visual and aural — and therefore tells the examiner in one sentence what the three body paragraphs will do. A thesis that merely says the director uses many techniques has committed to nothing.
Result: Decoded: the stem demands technique as evidence; the six available means are framing, mise-en-scène, lighting, editing, sound and song; the thesis ranks three of them against dialogue and commits the essay to defending that ranking.

A student has watched all three prescribed films once and enjoyed one considerably more than the others. Work through the choice.
For each film, try to write three sentences of the form ہدایت کار نے … کے ذریعے … دکھایا ہے, naming a technique in the first blank and a claim in the second. If a film yields three such sentences after one viewing, it will yield eight after four. If it yields none, enjoyment will not rescue it in the examination, because the AO4 grid asks for analysis of how the work presents its material.
Ask what world the film depicts and whether that world is doing work in it. A film whose setting is merely a backdrop gives you nothing for the specification's fifth feature; a film in which the setting constrains what the characters can do gives you a whole paragraph in any essay. This test frequently reverses a first preference, and it should be applied before the choice is made rather than after.
You will need to watch the chosen film at least four times: once for the story, once for structure with a pause button, once for technique, and once shortly before the examination for the evidence bank. A film you cannot face four times is the wrong choice however good it is. This is a practical criterion and it is not a trivial one.
If two films pass all three tests, choose the one you would rather spend two years with, because you will write better about a film you find interesting. But preference is the tiebreaker, not the criterion. Record the decision alongside your literary text and check the Paper 1 research cross-rule at the same moment: neither declared work may be referred to in the independent research.
Result: Choice procedure: three sentences naming technique and claim; the setting test; the four-viewings test; and only then preference as a tiebreaker — with the Paper 1 cross-rule checked at the moment of declaration.

Eight cinematic terms and the claim each one licenses
The method is shown on an unnamed film, because inventing a scene from a real prescribed title would be dishonest. Take any moment in your own film where two characters are in one frame and one of them is not speaking, and write the analytical sentence.
اِس منظر میں دونوں کردار خاموش ہیں اور ماحول اداس ہے۔ It describes and it evaluates, and it names no technique, so there is nothing for the reader to agree or disagree with. It would score on neither grid: no critical analysis for AO4, and no cinematic vocabulary for AO3.
ہدایت کار نے دونوں کرداروں کو ایک ہی فریم میں رکھا ہے مگر اُن کے درمیان ایک دروازہ حائل ہے، جس سے قربت اور فاصلہ ایک ساتھ دکھائے گئے ہیں۔ Now there is a technique, an observation and a consequence. دکھائے گئے ہیں is a passive perfect, masculine plural — one AO3 item — and حائل ہے, stands between, is precise.
اِس پورے منظر میں پس منظر موسیقی غائب ہے، اور یہی خاموشی ناظر کو وہ نتیجہ نکالنے دیتی ہے جو مکالمہ نہیں دیتا۔ The absence of the score is stated as a fact and then interpreted. یہی, the emphatic, does the analytical work: it is this silence, and not something else, that produces the effect.
اِس کے فوراً بعد ہدایت کار ایک بھری ہوئی گلی کا منظر کاٹتے ہیں، اور یہ تقابلی ادارت اُس خاموشی کو تنہائی میں بدل دیتی ہے۔ The cut is named, the comparison it creates is named, and the paragraph ends on a change in the meaning of the earlier shot — which is a conclusion, not a description. Four sentences, five terms, one scene, and an argument that a reader could dispute.

As before, the film is left unnamed so that nothing is invented about a real prescribed title. Take the last scene of your own film and build the card.
فلم کا آخری منظر، مرکزی تصادم کے حل ہونے کے بعد. Precise without a timecode. A final scene is the easiest of all to locate and among the most useful to have, which is why it is the card to build first.
Describe only what you are certain of, and prefer the simplest description: کون سے کردار موجود ہیں، وہ کہاں ہیں، اور کیا کرتے ہیں۔ If you are unsure whether a particular character is present, leave them out. A card is only worth having if you can defend every word of it in the room.
کیمرا آہستہ آہستہ پیچھے ہٹتا ہے، مکالمہ ختم ہو جاتا ہے، اور پس منظر موسیقی صرف آخری چند سیکنڈ میں آتی ہے۔ Three observations, each of which could be checked against the film. This is the line a plot-based bank does not have, and it is the line the range grid and the AO4 grid both pay for.
Claim: کیمرے کا پیچھے ہٹنا کہانی کو ایک فرد کے مسئلے سے نکال کر ایک عام صورتِ حال بنا دیتا ہے۔ Use one, for a question about how the film presents a social issue: the pull-back generalises. Use two, for a question about characterisation: the same shot ends the film on the situation rather than on the person, which is a judgement about how much the film thinks its central figure is the point. One card, two arguments.
Result: Card: location — the final scene, after the central conflict resolves; content — described only as far as memory is secure; technique — the camera pulls back, dialogue ceases, the score enters only in the last seconds; claim — the pull-back converts an individual story into a general situation, usable both for a question on social issues and for one on characterisation.

Plan the essay for the question decoded in the first section — by what cinematic means the director presents social distance — using the eight-card bank and the five-paragraph shape.
Choose between the two questions on evidence, not interest. Decode: the stem names cinematic means as its evidence type. Thesis: ہدایت کار سماجی فاصلے کو مکالمے سے کم اور فریم، ادارت اور خاموشی سے زیادہ پیش کرتے ہیں۔ Then pick the three cards that instantiate exactly those three means, and check that each card's fourth line already contains a claim.
Opening, about fifty words: the thesis plus a sentence naming the three means. First body paragraph: the framing card. Claim, location in one clause, then فریم میں دونوں کردار موجود ہیں مگر … , then the consequence tied back to فاصلہ. Do not reread; the check comes later.
Second paragraph: the cross-cutting card, ending on the comparison the film makes without stating it. Third paragraph: the silence card, which is the strongest of the three because it argues from an absence. Order them so that the strongest is last, since a levels-based grid reads for the overall quality of the argument and a paragraph that lands well is worth putting where it is remembered.
مجموعی طور پر فلم سماجی فاصلے کو بیان نہیں کرتی بلکہ دکھاتی ہے: مکالمہ اُسے قبول کرتا ہے، جبکہ فریم، ادارت اور خاموشی اُس پر سوال اٹھاتے ہیں۔ Fifty words, answers کن ذرائع سے, and makes one judgement about the relation between what the dialogue does and what the technique does.
Gender, obliques, the ergative and its agreement, verb government, and فلم's feminine agreement. Do not use these minutes to add an idea; the AO4 mark is settled and the twenty-five language marks are what this pass exists for. If you finish early, reread the conclusion once — it is the sentence an examiner reads last.
Result: Plan: thesis ranking frame, cutting and silence above dialogue; three body cards in ascending order of strength; a conclusion contrasting what the dialogue accepts with what the technique questions; and a final seven minutes on five mechanical checks only.
