The film: Paper 2 Section C, and the language of cinema in Russian

This topic prepares Section C of Paper 2, the written response to a film. It applies to students who study one literary text and one film rather than two literary texts: a candidate who answers two questions in Section B does not complete Section C, and no candidate may answer on two films. The film essay is chosen from two questions offered on the film and is marked out of 50 by the same three grids as the literary essay — critical and analytical response (AO4) out of 20, range of grammatical structures and vocabulary (AO3) out of 20, accuracy of language (AO3) out of 10 — with the same guide length of approximately 215 to 250 words. The specification's own definition of terminology for the range grid explicitly includes cinematic vocabulary, naming camera technique, hand-held camera and the use of black and white as examples, which tells you plainly that the film essay is expected to discuss how a film is made and not only what happens in it. The notes therefore teach the language of cinema in Russian, the method of building an evidence bank from viewings, and the conversion of narration into analysis.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is a relevant response that shows the film has been watched attentively: an argument with a clear position, evidence taken from named scenes rather than from a plot summary, some cinematic vocabulary used correctly, and Russian that is comprehensible throughout.

higher level

The full A-Level expects the essay to argue about how the film means what it means. That involves treating the camera, the editing, the sound and the framing as choices with effects, connecting those choices to the film's themes and social context, conceding at least one difficulty with your own reading, and using cinematic terminology in Russian because the argument needs it rather than because the grid mentions it.

Key points

The rules are simple and the consequences are not. Two works are studied. If both are literary texts, both essays come from Section B and Section C is not attempted. If one is a literary text and one a film, one essay comes from Section B and one from Section C. Answering questions on two films is not permitted in any circumstances. There is a choice of two questions on each film, so a candidate on the text-and-film route chooses one of two on their text and one of two on their film. The combination is declared, and the film is one of the four listed in Appendix 2 of the specification — a list set by the board and revisable between issues, so confirm the one current for your series.
The film essay is marked by exactly the same three grids as the literary essay, which is worth stating because candidates frequently assume it is easier. It is not: the analysis grid asks for the same critical and analytical response, the range grid asks for the same variety of structures and vocabulary, and the accuracy grid is the same ten marks. What differs is the terminology. The specification's guidance on the range grid gives its examples of appropriate terminology in two groups — plot and character, metaphor and simile, and then, explicitly for film, camera technique, hand-held camera and the use of black and white. That is the board telling you, in its own examples, that a film essay which discusses only story and character is leaving range marks unclaimed.
One rule runs in the other direction and catches people every year: an essay on a literary text may not be argued from a film adaptation of that text. If your two works happen to be a novella and a film, and the film is unrelated to the novella, this rule is easy to observe. If your literary text has a well-known screen version, the danger is real, because a scene remembered from a screen is not distinguishable in memory from a scene remembered from a page. The safe discipline is to build your evidence bank for the text from the text alone, in writing, before watching any adaptation, and to treat any detail you cannot place on a page as unusable.
Finally, note the practical difference between studying a film and studying a novella. A novella can be reread; a film has to be rewatched, and rewatching is slower and less selective unless it is organised. A film also has a soundtrack, a colour palette, a length of shot and a rhythm of cutting, none of which has an equivalent in a printed text and all of which are evidence. And because no documentation may be taken into the examination, everything you will use has to be in your memory in a form you can describe accurately — which, as with the literary text, means describing what is on screen rather than quoting what is said.
Worked example

Deconstructing a film essay question

A Section C question on a declared film reads: «Каким образом режиссёр показывает отношения человека и власти в фильме?» Show what the question asks and what a strong answer therefore contains.

  1. 01Read каким образом as the whole question

Каким образом asks about means, not about content. An essay that describes the relations between the individual and authority in the film has answered что, not каким образом, and the analysis grid will read it as description however accurate it is. The question is about the director's choices — framing, editing, sound, structure — and the answer must name at least three of them.

  2. 02Note that режиссёр is the grammatical subject and keep it there

The question makes the director the agent, and your sentences should too: режиссёр строит кадр так, чтобы … ; оператор снимает сцену с нижней точки, и герой … The alternative — в фильме показано, что … — quietly turns the film into a report about the world and loses the analysis. Writing the director as the subject of your sentences is a small grammatical habit with a large effect on the band.

  3. 03Choose three means, not three scenes

The plan should be organised by technique, not by chronology. For example: framing and shot scale; the treatment of space and architecture; and sound, including its absence. Each of the three then takes one named scene as its evidence. Organising by chronology produces a narrative with comments; organising by technique produces an argument with evidence, and the difference is visible in the first sentence of each paragraph.

  4. 04Form a thesis about the relation, not about the theme

Режиссёр показывает власть не через её представителей, а через пространство: она почти всегда вне кадра, и именно поэтому кажется неизбежной. That is arguable, it answers каким образом, and it gives each paragraph something to prove. Compare a thesis such as фильм критикует власть, which is about the theme and could be supported by any three scenes at all.

  5. 05Reserve the objection paragraph for the obvious counter-case

Every strong reading of a film has one scene that resists it, and naming it is what the top band means by evaluation. Против этого можно возразить, что в одной сцене власть всё-таки появляется в кадре напрямую — но именно её появление снято так, что она выглядит меньше, чем её отсутствие. Fifty words, and the essay has evaluated rather than asserted.

Result: Вопрос спрашивает о средствах, а не о содержании, поэтому план строится по приёмам, а не по хронологии. Тезис: режиссёр показывает власть не через её представителей, а через пространство — она почти всегда вне кадра. Три абзаца: 1) построение кадра и крупность плана; 2) пространство и архитектура; 3) звук и его отсутствие. Четвёртый абзац — возражение: сцена, где власть всё-таки в кадре, и почему она не опровергает тезис.

Exam focus

  • Know which route you are on: two texts means no Section C; one text and one film means one essay in each section; two films is not permitted (AO4).
  • Treat the film essay as equally demanding; the three grids are identical and the terminology requirement is explicit (AO3).
  • Build the literary text's evidence bank from the text alone, before watching any adaptation of it (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Assuming the film essay is the easier of the two. It is marked by the same three grids and additionally expects cinematic terminology.
  • Answering on two films, which is not permitted.
  • Using a scene from an adaptation as evidence about a literary text; no credit is given.
  • Studying a film only for plot and character, which leaves the range grid's own named terminology unclaimed.

Active revision

Fig. 1Each term exists to license a claim. Learn the third column rather than the first: a candidate who can name a close-up earns nothing, while a candidate who can say what a close-up does at the moment a character stops speaking is arguing. The marked row is the long take, because it is the technique most often noticed and least often explained.

Key points

The vocabulary is small and it is directly rewarded, which makes it the best-value revision in this topic. The people: режиссёр is the director, оператор the cinematographer, сценарист the screenwriter, актёр and актриса, композитор. The units: кадр is the frame or shot, сцена a scene, эпизод a sequence, план the shot scale. The scales: крупный план is a close-up, средний план a medium shot, общий план a wide or long shot, деталь an extreme close-up on an object. The camera: ракурс is the angle, съёмка с нижней точки shooting from below, съёмка с верхней точки from above, ручная камера a hand-held camera, панорама a pan, наезд a track or zoom in. The assembly: монтаж is editing, склейка a cut, длинный кадр a long take.
Sound and image have their own terms and both are evidence. Звук covers everything audible; закадровый голос is voice-over; музыкальное сопровождение or саундтрек the score; тишина, silence, which in a film is a choice and not an absence. For the image: чёрно-белая съёмка is black-and-white shooting, цветовая гамма the colour palette, освещение lighting, контражур backlighting, глубина резкости depth of field. For structure: экспозиция, завязка, кульминация, развязка work for a film as for a text, and флешбэк or ретроспекция for a flashback. Learn them with an article: it is снято крупным планом, in the instrumental, and сцена снята с нижней точки.
The reason to learn the terms is not that they impress but that each licenses a specific analytical claim, and an essay that names a technique without saying what it does has spent a word and earned nothing. A close-up licenses a claim about where the director wants attention and about interiority: крупный план заставляет зрителя смотреть на лицо тогда, когда герой молчит. A wide shot licenses a claim about scale and belonging: на общем плане человек оказывается меньше пространства, в котором он живёт. A hand-held camera licenses a claim about immediacy and instability. A long take licenses a claim about real time and about refusing to cut away. Silence licenses a claim about what cannot be said.
Two habits keep the terminology honest. The first is to describe before naming: say what is on screen, then name the technique, then make the claim — в этой сцене мы видим только лицо героя, экран заполнен им целиком; это крупный план, и он работает потому, что герой в этот момент ничего не говорит. The three-part shape is the same described-episode method the literary topic taught, adapted to a medium where the evidence is visual. The second is to resist naming a technique you are not certain of. Calling a medium shot a close-up is a factual error about the work, exactly like misquoting a line, and it is visible to any examiner who has seen the film.
Worked example

Turning one shot into an analytical paragraph

In a scene of your declared film a character stands alone at the edge of a large empty space and the camera holds the shot without cutting for a long time. Build a paragraph of about sixty words in Russian.

  1. 01Describe what is on screen, without terminology

В этой сцене герой стоит один на краю большого пустого пространства, и камера не двигается. Ten words, no terms, no adjectives of judgement. This sentence is your evidence and it must be as neutral as a witness statement, for the same reason the literary topic gave: the argument comes next and should be visibly separate from the observation.

  2. 02Name the two techniques accurately

Это общий план, снятый одним длинным кадром. Снятый is a past passive participle agreeing with план, and одним длинным кадром is the instrumental of means. Two techniques, correctly named, in seven words. Note the participle: the range grid names past passive participles among its complex language, and here it appears because the sentence genuinely needs it, not as decoration.

  3. 03Make the first claim, about scale

На общем плане человек оказывается меньше пространства, в котором он находится, и это соотношение важнее любых слов. Оказываться takes a predicate instrumental or, as here, a comparative. В котором is a relative pronoun in the prepositional. The claim is about what the framing does, not about how it feels, which is what keeps it analytical.

  4. 04Make the second claim, about time

А поскольку режиссёр не делает склейки, зритель вынужден смотреть столько же, сколько смотрит герой, — и это единственный способ передать ожидание. Поскольку is a causal conjunction. Вынужден is a short-form participle used predicatively. Столько же, сколько is the correlative of equality. Two techniques, two distinct claims, and the second explains why the director might have chosen the first.

  5. 05Return to the thesis, and count the words

Именно так фильм говорит о власти: не показывая её, а показывая размер того, что ей принадлежит. Не показывая … , а показывая … is a pair of negated and affirmed present gerunds, which is genuinely complex language required by the parallel. The paragraph is now about sixty words, contains two named techniques, two claims and a return to the argument, and could not be mistaken for a plot summary.

Result: В этой сцене герой стоит один на краю большого пустого пространства, и камера не двигается. Это общий план, снятый одним длинным кадром. На общем плане человек оказывается меньше пространства, в котором он находится, и это соотношение важнее любых слов. А поскольку режиссёр не делает склейки, зритель вынужден смотреть столько же, сколько смотрит герой, — и это единственный способ передать ожидание. Именно так фильм говорит о власти: не показывая её, а показывая размер того, что ей принадлежит.

Exam focus

  • Learn the twenty-five Russian cinematic terms; the range grid names cinematic terminology explicitly as one of its traits (AO3).
  • Never name a technique without saying what it does; a term without a claim earns nothing (AO4).
  • Describe what is on screen before naming the technique, exactly as the literary topic described an episode before making a claim (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing близкий план for a close-up. The Russian is крупный план.
  • Confusing план as shot scale with план as a plan; in cinematic writing план means the framing, and общий, средний and крупный are its degrees.
  • Naming a technique inaccurately — a medium shot called a close-up — which is a factual error about the work.
  • Listing techniques without claims, which spends the vocabulary and earns nothing from the analysis grid.

Active revision

Выберите из своего фильма пять сцен и опишите каждую по схеме: что видно на экране (одно предложение без терминов), как это снято (один термин), что это даёт зрителю (одно утверждение). Затем проверьте каждый термин: уверены ли вы, что это действительно крупный план, а не средний?

Четыре фильма: the list, and how a film is actually studied#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9RU0 Appendix 2 - Prescribed literary texts and films; all of the films are feature lengthLPPearson Edexcel 9RU0 Paper 2 - responses should relate to features such as form, technique of presentation, key concepts and issues, and social context

Key points

Appendix 2 of the specification, in Issue 3 of January 2022, lists four films, all feature length: Крылья, directed by Лариса Шепитько, 1966; Утомлённые солнцем, directed by Никита Михалков, 1994; Кавказский пленник, directed by Сергей Бодров, 1996; and Левиафан, directed by Андрей Звягинцев, 2014. Centres choose from within the list and the board can revise it between issues of the specification, so confirm the list current for your own examination series rather than relying on a secondary source. The four span half a century and four very different kinds of film, so the social and historical context of whichever one your centre has chosen must be studied deliberately: a film of 1966 and a film of 2014 do not sit in the same relation to the society around them.
The specification tells you what an essay must be able to discuss, and it is worth quoting the shape of it: responses should relate to features such as the form and the technique of presentation, key concepts and issues, and the social context, as appropriate to the work studied. Four things, then, for whichever film you have: how it is put together, how it is shot and cut, what it is about at the level of ideas, and where it sits in the society that produced it. Preparation that covers only the third of those — which is what a class discussion naturally gravitates towards — leaves three quarters of the specification's own list unaddressed.
A film is studied by rewatching with a purpose, and four viewings with four different jobs are worth a dozen without. The first viewing is simply to watch it, without notes, because a film experienced as a film is the thing you are going to write about and taking notes during a first viewing destroys it. The second viewing is for structure: where the exposition ends, where the turning point falls, how the last scene relates to the first, how long the film spends on each phase. The third is for technique: choose three sequences and watch each twice, noting shot scale, camera movement, cutting rhythm, sound. The fourth, close to the examination, is for evidence: build the bank of eight to ten described scenes you will actually use.
The evidence bank for a film is built exactly as for a literary text, with one addition. Each entry needs where the scene falls, what happens in it in one clause, what claim it can support — and, for a film, how it is shot. Ближе к развязке; герой возвращается в пустой дом; снято одним длинным кадром на общем плане; доказывает, что для режиссёра важнее пространство, чем реплики. Four lines per scene, eight to ten scenes, and you have everything you can use in the examination, in a form you can reproduce accurately from memory. Do not try to memorise dialogue: a line remembered approximately is as damaging in a film essay as a misquoted sentence in a literary one.
Worked example

Four viewings, four jobs: building the bank

You have your declared film and about six weeks before the examination. Design the study programme.

  1. 01Viewing one — watch it, and write nothing

Watch the film through, in one sitting, with subtitles if you need them, and take no notes at all. Afterwards, and only afterwards, write down in Russian what you think it is about, in three sentences. That paragraph is your first hypothesis and it is worth keeping, because the most interesting essays often argue against the writer's own first impression, and you cannot argue against an impression you did not record.

  2. 02Viewing two — structure, with a stopwatch

Watch again and note the timecode of four moments: where the exposition ends, where the situation changes decisively, where the highest point of tension falls, and where the resolution begins. Then note how many minutes each phase occupies. A film that spends forty minutes on exposition and eight on resolution is telling you something about its own priorities, and that observation is analysis, not description.

  3. 03Viewing three — technique, three sequences only

Choose three sequences that your hypothesis says matter, and watch each of them twice: once for the image — shot scale, camera movement, framing, colour — and once for the sound, including music and silence. Note in Russian, using the terminology. Three sequences is deliberate: watching the whole film for technique produces a list, whereas watching three sequences closely produces evidence.

  4. 04Viewing four — the evidence bank, close to the exam

Two or three weeks before the examination, watch once more and build the bank: eight to ten scenes, four lines each — position in the composition, what happens, how it is shot, what it proves. Write it in Russian. This is the document you will effectively be reproducing from memory in the examination, so it should be written in the language and the register the essay will use.

  5. 05Between viewings — the context, read separately

Read about the period the film depicts and the period it was made in — they are frequently not the same, and the gap between them is often the most interesting thing about the film. Note three facts with dates. Then write one sentence linking the film to its own moment of production: фильм снят в … году, и его отношение к тому, что он показывает, объясняется не только сюжетом, но и временем съёмки. That sentence, prepared in advance, will earn analysis marks in any question you are asked.

Result: Программа: 1-й просмотр — без записей, затем три предложения о том, о чём фильм; 2-й — структура с секундомером, четыре точки и длительность каждой фазы; 3-й — техника, только три эпизода, каждый дважды (изображение и звук); 4-й, за две-три недели до экзамена, — банк из десяти сцен по четыре строки, по-русски. Между просмотрами — контекст: три датированных факта и одно предложение о времени съёмки.

Exam focus

  • Confirm the prescribed film list current for your own series; the board can revise it between issues (AO4).
  • Cover all four of the specification's named features: form, technique of presentation, key concepts and issues, social context (AO4).
  • Build an evidence bank of eight to ten scenes with four lines each, including how the scene is shot (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Taking notes during the first viewing, which destroys the experience of the film you are going to write about.
  • Preparing only the ideas and issues, leaving form, technique and social context unstudied.
  • Trying to memorise dialogue; a line remembered approximately damages an essay exactly as a misquotation does.
  • Treating the film's period as background colour rather than as part of the analysis; a 1966 film and a 2014 film stand in different relations to their societies.

Active revision

Составьте по своему фильму банк из десяти сцен. Для каждой запишите четыре строки: где сцена находится в композиции, что в ней происходит (одно предложение), как она снята (один-два термина), какое утверждение она доказывает. Затем проверьте, что не менее трёх сцен относятся к социальному контексту, а не только к сюжету.

От пересказа к анализу: the film essay's characteristic failure#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9RU0 Paper 2 - Critical and analytical response (AO4): any evidence from the work that is merely descriptive sits in the lowest bandLPPearson Edexcel 9RU0 Paper 2 - guide length approximately 215 to 250 words per essay

Key points

Every essay type has a characteristic failure and the film essay's is retelling. It happens for an understandable reason: a film is experienced as a story in time, the memory of it is organised chronologically, and under pressure the chronological memory is what comes out. The result is a narrative with occasional comment, and the analysis grid describes it exactly — evidence from the work that is descriptive, points of view with simplistic justification, limited ability to form arguments. At 230 words a single sentence of retelling costs about half a per cent of the essay, so three of them cost more than the whole conclusion.
The test for a sentence is mechanical and takes two seconds: could this sentence appear in a plot summary written by somebody who had not seen the question? If yes, it is retelling and must either acquire a claim or be deleted. Герой возвращается в пустой дом is a plot summary. Возвращение героя в пустой дом снято общим планом, и именно поэтому сцена читается не как утрата, а как исчезновение is an argument. The information content is almost identical; what has changed is that the second sentence says what the observation is for. Applying this test to every sentence during the check is the most reliable improvement available to a film essay.
There is a structural remedy as well as a sentence-level one, and it is to organise the essay by technique or by idea rather than by chronology. If your three body paragraphs are the beginning, the middle and the end, retelling is almost inevitable, because the chronological frame has nothing to hold but events. If they are framing, sound and structure, or the individual, the institution and the landscape, each paragraph has a claim to prove and reaches into the film for whichever scene proves it, regardless of where that scene falls. Organising by anything other than chronology is a decision made at the planning stage and it is worth more than any amount of care while writing.
One further habit distinguishes strong film essays: connecting a technique to the film's social context rather than treating them as two separate topics. A wide shot that makes a person small in a landscape is a formal fact; a wide shot that makes a person small in a landscape in a film about an individual's dealings with an institution is an argument about power. In Russian: приём здесь не украшение, а способ сказать то, что герой сказать не может. That sentence, or something like it, belongs in almost every film essay, because it is the bridge between the range grid's terminology and the analysis grid's demand for evaluation of themes and social contexts.
Worked example

Rewriting a retelling paragraph into an analytical one

Here is a paragraph that the analysis grid would place in its lowest band. Сначала герой живёт в своём доме у моря. Потом приезжает чиновник и говорит, что дом снесут. Герой обращается в суд, но проигрывает. В конце он теряет всё. Это очень грустный фильм. Rewrite it.

  1. 01Diagnose: five sentences, five plot summaries

Every one of the first four sentences could stand in a synopsis written by somebody who had never seen the question, and the fifth is a reaction rather than a judgement. There is no claim anywhere in the paragraph, so there is nothing for the analysis grid to reward. Note also that the paragraph is organised chronologically — сначала, потом, в конце — which is the structural cause rather than the symptom.

  2. 02Choose one claim to make, and discard the rest

The paragraph is trying to cover the whole plot; a 230-word essay cannot afford that. Choose one claim: режиссёр показывает поражение героя не как событие, а как процесс, у которого нет одного виновника. Everything that does not serve that claim now goes, which immediately frees the words needed to argue.

  3. 03Replace the chronology with one scene, described

В сцене в суде камера почти не показывает лиц: мы видим бумаги, руки, спины. That is one scene, described neutrally, with a technique implied and about to be named. It has replaced three sentences of plot and it carries more information about the film, because it says something only a viewer could know.

  4. 04Name the technique and make the claim

Отсутствие крупных планов здесь не случайно: у процесса, который решает судьбу героя, нет лица, и режиссёр показывает это буквально. Отсутствие plus the genitive is the absence of. Не случайно is the compact way of saying that a formal choice is deliberate, and it is the phrase that most reliably turns an observation into an argument in a film essay.

  5. 05Connect to the context and close

Именно поэтому фильм говорит не о конкретном чиновнике, а о механизме — и грусть здесь не настроение, а вывод. The final clause answers the original paragraph's это очень грустный фильм by converting a reaction into a claim. The paragraph is now about sixty words, contains one described scene, one named technique, one claim and one connection to the film's subject, and it could not appear in a plot summary.

Result: В сцене в суде камера почти не показывает лиц: мы видим бумаги, руки, спины. Отсутствие крупных планов здесь не случайно: у процесса, который решает судьбу героя, нет лица, и режиссёр показывает это буквально. Именно поэтому фильм говорит не о конкретном чиновнике, а о механизме — и грусть здесь не настроение, а вывод.

Exam focus

  • Apply the plot-summary test to every sentence: if it could appear in a summary, it must acquire a claim or be deleted (AO4).
  • Organise the essay by technique or by idea, never by chronology; a chronological frame makes retelling nearly unavoidable (AO4).
  • Connect at least one technique explicitly to the social context; that connection is the bridge between the two twenty-mark grids (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Organising the essay as beginning, middle and end, which makes retelling structural rather than accidental.
  • Describing a scene and then adding a general remark about the film; the claim must be about that scene.
  • Treating technique and context as separate paragraphs rather than connecting them.
  • Assuming a vivid description counts as analysis. Vividness is not a criterion in any of the three grids.

Active revision

Возьмите свой абзац о фильме и проверьте каждое предложение вопросом: могло бы оно стоять в пересказе сюжета? Каждое, на которое ответ «да», перепишите так, чтобы в нём появилось утверждение о том, зачем режиссёр это сделал. Посчитайте, сколько предложений пришлось переписать.

Key points

The film essay gets the same sixty-five minutes as the literary one and needs the same discipline, with three differences worth planning for. First, the terminology is explicitly named by the range grid, so a deliberate check that at least four cinematic terms appear, each attached to a claim, is worth building into the plan rather than hoping. Second, the temptation to retell is stronger, so the plot-summary test should be run during the check as a separate sweep. Third, the film's social context is more often forgotten, because a film feels self-contained in a way a nineteenth-century text does not; the prepared sentence linking the film to its moment of production is what protects against this.
The architecture is identical to the literary essay's and there is no reason to invent another: thesis of two sentences, two body paragraphs each with a claim and a described scene, one objection paragraph, one conclusion that says what follows. At 230 words that is roughly 30, 60, 60, 50 and 30. What changes is the content of the evidence — a described scene rather than a described episode, with how it is shot as an extra line — and the fact that a technique named without a claim is dead weight in a way that a described episode is not.
The three grids are earned in identifiable places, exactly as in the literary essay. Analysis lives in the thesis, in the first sentence of each body paragraph and in the objection. Range lives in the structures the argument requires — a past passive participle when a scene is described as shot in a certain way, снятый общим планом; a gerund when two actions share a subject, не показывая лица; a relative clause when a technique has to be attached to a scene; a correlative when a proportion is asserted — plus the cinematic terminology. Accuracy lives in the final sweep, and the film essay has one extra risk there: the instrumental after снят, снято and снята, which candidates routinely leave in the nominative.
One last preparation is worth the twenty minutes it takes. Write out, before the examination, three sentences you know you will be able to use whatever the question: one linking the film to its period of production, one naming a formal choice that recurs across the film, and one that concedes a genuine difficulty with the reading you are most likely to argue. None of them is a prepared essay and none can be accused of being one, because each is a sentence about the film rather than about a question. Having them means that in the room your five planning minutes are spent on the question rather than on remembering what you think about the film.
Worked example

The final check on a film essay, sweep by sweep

The film essay is written and five minutes remain. Show what the sweeps look for, using this drafted sentence as the example: «Режиссёр снял эта сцена общий план, показывая пустой дом, и зритель понимает что герой потерял всё.»

  1. 01Sweep one — the instrumental after снять

Снять что-либо каким-либо планом puts the manner in the instrumental: снял эту сцену общим планом. Two corrections in one clause — the accusative эту сцену for the direct object and the instrumental общим планом for the manner. This is the film essay's signature error and it is worth making the first sweep, because it recurs in almost every paragraph of a film essay.

  2. 02Sweep two — the gerund's subject

Показывая пустой дом is a present gerund and must share its subject with the main clause. The main clause's subject is режиссёр, and it is the director who shows the empty house, so the gerund is correct here. Had the intended subject been камера or зритель the gerund would have been wrong and would need a full clause. Check every gerund in a film essay for this, because scenes and cameras and directors are constantly being confused as subjects.

  3. 03Sweep three — the missing что and its comma

Зритель понимает что герой потерял всё needs a comma before что; a subordinate clause in Russian is always separated by a comma, without exception, which is simpler than the English rule and therefore easier to check mechanically. Scan for что, который, потому что, если and хотя, and confirm that each has its comma.

  4. 04Sweep four — the plot-summary test

Зритель понимает, что герой потерял всё is a statement of what happens; it could appear in a synopsis. Convert it into a claim about the direction: и именно потому, что дом показан пустым, а не разрушенным, потеря выглядит окончательной. Показан is a short-form past passive participle. The sentence now argues rather than reports, which is what the analysis grid is measuring.

  5. 05Sweep five — count the terminology and stop

Count the cinematic terms in the finished essay. If there are fewer than four, or if any of them stands without a claim attached, fix that before anything else, because the range grid names this terminology explicitly. Then stop. Do not revisit the thesis at minute sixty-three; a thesis changed at the end leaves four paragraphs supporting something else.

Result: Исправленное предложение: «Режиссёр снял эту сцену общим планом, показывая пустой дом, — и именно потому, что дом показан пустым, а не разрушенным, потеря выглядит окончательной.» Четыре исправления: винительный падеж прямого дополнения, творительный падеж после «снять», запятая перед придаточным и превращение пересказа в утверждение о приёме.

Exam focus

  • Build a terminology check into the plan: at least four cinematic terms, each attached to a claim (AO3).
  • Run the plot-summary test as a separate sweep during the check; retelling is the film essay's characteristic failure (AO4).
  • Watch the instrumental after снят, снято and снята in the accuracy sweep; it is the film essay's signature error (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Naming techniques without claims in order to satisfy the range grid; the grid rewards deployment, not display.
  • Forgetting the film's social and production context, which the specification names among the features an essay should address.
  • Leaving the complement of снят in the nominative: it is снято общим планом, in the instrumental.
  • Improvising a position on the film in the five planning minutes instead of preparing three usable sentences in advance.

Active revision

Напишите заранее три предложения о своём фильме: одно связывает фильм со временем его создания, одно называет формальный приём, который повторяется на протяжении всего фильма, и одно признаёт слабое место вашего собственного прочтения. Проверьте каждое: можно ли его использовать при любом вопросе? Если нет, перепишите так, чтобы можно было.
