Mudanças na sociedade contemporânea: a família e o mundo do trabalho

This topic carries the whole of Edexcel's first theme, Tema 1: Mudanças na sociedade contemporânea, across both of its sub-themes — Mudanças na estrutura familiar, with its three aspects of changing attitudes to marriage and to personal relationships, the new kinds of family and the role of the extended family, and O mundo do trabalho, with its three aspects of working life and attitudes to work, unemployment and gender equality. It also carries Tema 1's research subject, A importância da educação após o ensino secundário em Portugal, whose aspects are the options in higher and technical education, internships and volunteering; that subject belongs here as well as in the individual-research-project topic because post-secondary education is the hinge between the two sub-themes, the thing that sits between a family and a labour market. The specification is emphatic that Temas 1, 3 and 4 are set in the context of Portugal only, so everything in this topic is about Portugal, and a student who reaches for a Brazilian or Angolan example here is writing content that the AO4 grid will not reward. The material is contemporary, contested and easy to write badly. The notes therefore hold to a method: describe what is documented, attribute every assessment, invent no statistics, and keep the weight on the Portuguese, because it is the Portuguese that is actually assessed.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is accurate description with a personal response: what kinds of household exist in Portugal today, what the words for them are, what work and unemployment mean for a young person, and what the student thinks — expressed with correct vocabulary, secure present and past tenses and accurate agreement.

higher level

The full A-Level expects analysis, attribution and restraint. What changed, in what direction, and how is that change assessed differently by different observers? Answers must distinguish a documented institution from a contested interpretation, hedge what cannot be evidenced from memory in an examination room, avoid inventing numbers, and hold a line of argument across a paragraph rather than listing observations.

Fig. 1The specification prints three aspects in a list, which hides the fact that they are causally linked and that the link is what an essay is made of. Reading left to right: changing attitudes produce new household types, which change what the extended family is asked to absorb, which in turn feeds back into the world-of-work sub-theme through childcare and elderly care. The dashed edge is the one that crosses into Tema 1's other sub-theme, and it is the join a strong Section C answer makes explicitly.

Key points

The first sub-theme of Tema 1 asks three questions in sequence, and the specification's own ordering is the best essay plan available: how attitudes to matrimónio and to relações pessoais have changed, what novos tipos de família have appeared, and what role the família alargada now plays. Set in Portugal only. The documented direction of change is not in dispute even where its causes are: people marry later than their grandparents did, fewer marriages are celebrated in church than were two generations ago, more couples live in união de facto without marrying, divorce is available and used, and households are smaller. Those are directional statements, and directional statements are what an examination room without notes allows you to make honestly. What it does not allow is a percentage, and inventing one is worse than omitting it, because a wrong number is a wrong claim while a comparative phrase — cada vez mais, tem vindo a diminuir, é hoje muito menos comum do que há trinta anos — is simply true.
The vocabulary is precise and worth learning as a connected set rather than as a list, because these are the words a Paper 1 Section B text or a Paper 3 recording on this sub-theme will actually use. O casamento is marriage as an institution and also the wedding; o matrimónio, the spec's own word, is the more formal and more legal term. A união de facto is a legally recognised cohabitation; o casamento civil and o casamento católico distinguish the ceremony; o divórcio, separar-se, a guarda partilhada for shared custody. For household types: a família nuclear, a família monoparental for a single-parent family, a família recomposta or reconstituída for a step-family, o agregado familiar for the household as a statistical and administrative unit. A taxa de natalidade is the birth rate and o envelhecimento da população the ageing of the population — two phrases that recur constantly in Portuguese social commentary and that a candidate should be able to produce without hesitation.
The third aspect, o papel da família alargada, is where Portugal genuinely differs from the picture an English-speaking student may bring with them, and it is the aspect where the sub-theme's two halves meet. The família alargada — grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins — has historically absorbed functions that in some other European societies are performed by the state or bought on the market: childcare while parents work, financial help with housing, and care of the elderly at home rather than in an institution. Os avós tomam conta dos netos is not a sentimental observation in Portugal but a description of a real economic arrangement, and it is one of the reasons that changes in the labour market and changes in family structure cannot be analysed separately. Where that support is unavailable, the alternatives are creches, amas and lares, and their cost and availability are themselves a live public argument.
The discipline that keeps this material safe is also what makes it good: separate the description from the evaluation, and attribute the evaluation. That the number of registered marriages has fallen over decades is documentable. Whether that represents a crise da família or simply a mudança de modelo familiar is an interpretation, it is genuinely contested in Portugal, and it belongs behind an attribution — há quem veja nisto uma crise dos valores tradicionais, enquanto outros defendem que se trata apenas de uma mudança de modelo. That is not evasion, and it is not fence-sitting. The AO4 grid rewards critical analysis, developed and justified arguments and evaluation of issues; it does not reward asserting a contested social judgement as though it were a fact, and an examiner reading an unattributed verdict on how Portuguese families ought to live sees a weakness rather than a strength.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section B: answering an open-response reading question in Portuguese without lifting the text

The text says: Nas últimas décadas, o modelo familiar português deixou de ser único. Ao lado do casamento tradicional surgiram a união de facto, as famílias monoparentais e as famílias recompostas, sem que qualquer delas se tenha tornado dominante. Para muitos sociólogos, o que mudou não foi a importância da família, mas a variedade das formas que ela pode assumir. The question reads: Segundo o texto, o que é que mudou na família portuguesa? Justifique a sua resposta. (4 marks)

  1. 01Read what the question asks for, not what the text is about

The question has two halves — o que mudou, and justifique — and a four-mark open-response question in Section B almost always wants two points plus support rather than one long point. So the answer needs a statement of what changed and a statement of what did not, because the text explicitly contrasts them in its last sentence. Answering only with a list of family types would address half the question and cap the mark.

  2. 02Identify the load-bearing sentence

O que mudou não foi a importância da família, mas a variedade das formas que ela pode assumir. This is the text's own thesis and it is doing the work of the whole question. Note the structure não foi X, mas Y — a contrastive frame you can reuse in your own writing. Note also para muitos sociólogos, which attributes the claim rather than asserting it, and which you should carry into your answer if you want to represent the text accurately.

  3. 03Do not lift — this is where marks are lost

An answer that copies deixou de ser único … a variedade das formas que ela pode assumir word for word demonstrates that the candidate can find a sentence, not that they understood it. Section B open-response questions reward comprehension shown through reformulation. So change the grammar as well as the words: turn the noun variedade into an adjective phrase, turn the verb assumir into a different verb, replace deixou de ser único with a construction of your own. Reformulating also protects you, because a lifted sentence sometimes does not answer the question that was actually asked.

  4. 04Build the reformulation with a different structure

Start from the meaning rather than the words. What changed: there are now several coexisting family models rather than one. What did not change: the family still matters. A reformulation could run — Segundo o texto, o que se alterou foi a diversidade dos modelos familiares, e não o peso que a família continua a ter na sociedade. Alterou-se rather than mudou, diversidade rather than variedade, modelos familiares rather than formas que ela pode assumir, o peso que continua a ter rather than a importância. Every content word is different and the proposition is identical.

  5. 05Add the justification with one specific and the attribution

Justifique means point at the text, and the cheapest way to do that is to name the specific instances the text gives without copying the sentence they sit in: o texto refere a união de facto, as famílias monoparentais e as recompostas, e sublinha que nenhuma delas se tornou dominante. Proper nouns and technical terms cannot and need not be reformulated — nobody expects a synonym for união de facto. Finish with the attribution the text itself uses, para muitos sociólogos, which shows you noticed that the thesis is presented as a view held by somebody rather than as an established fact. That last touch is exactly the kind of reading the AO2 grid calls inferring meaning.

Result: Segundo o texto, o que se alterou foi a diversidade dos modelos familiares, e não o peso que a família continua a ter na sociedade portuguesa. O texto refere a união de facto, as famílias monoparentais e as recompostas, e sublinha que nenhuma delas se tornou dominante. Trata-se, aliás, de uma leitura que o próprio texto atribui a muitos sociólogos, e não de uma conclusão apresentada como indiscutível.

Exam focus

  • Portugal only. A Brazilian or Angolan example in a Tema 1 answer earns nothing — the examiner marks Portugal content (AO4).
  • Direction, not magnitude. Cada vez mais and tem vindo a diminuir are honest; an invented percentage is not (AO4).
  • The família alargada is an economic arrangement as much as a sentimental one, and it links this sub-theme to the next.
  • Attribute every social judgement. Crise da família is somebody's interpretation, not a fact about Portugal.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing about the Portuguese-speaking world in a Tema 1 answer. Temas 1, 3 and 4 are Portugal only.
  • Producing a percentage from memory. No dictionary and no notes are allowed, and an invented figure is a false claim.
  • Confusing união de facto with casamento civil. They are legally distinct and the distinction is examinable vocabulary.
  • Treating the família alargada only as affection, and missing that it substitutes for services that would otherwise be bought or provided.

Active revision

Write 180 words in Portuguese describing three ways in which the Portuguese household has changed over the last two generations. Use no numbers at all. Every claim must be phrased comparatively — mais, menos, cada vez mais, tem vindo a — and every evaluative sentence must carry an attribution. Then underline every noun in your paragraph and check that each one is a term this sub-theme actually uses rather than an English word given a Portuguese ending.

A vida laboral e atitudes face ao trabalho#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9PG0 Tema 1 — O mundo do trabalho: a vida laboral e atitudes face ao trabalhoLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The second sub-theme opens with a vida laboral e atitudes face ao trabalho, and the phrase atitudes face a is worth pausing on before the content, because it recurs across this specification and is a structure students consistently get wrong. Face a means towards or in the face of and takes no article of its own: atitudes face ao trabalho, where ao is a plus o and belongs to trabalho. The sub-theme is asking about two different things at once — what working life in Portugal is actually like, and what Portuguese people think about work — and a strong answer keeps the two apart, because they can diverge. A society can value work highly and still have a labour market that frustrates it, and noticing that gap is precisely the kind of critical analysis the AO4 grid rewards.
The descriptive vocabulary is dense and highly examinable. O contrato sem termo is a permanent contract and o contrato a termo a fixed-term one; the phrase o trabalho precário covers insecure work generally, and a precariedade is the noun everyone uses in Portuguese public debate. Trabalhar por conta própria is to be self-employed and trabalhar por conta de outrem to be an employee — outrem is an old indefinite pronoun meaning another person, surviving almost exclusively in this phrase and worth knowing for that reason. O ordenado or o salário for pay, o salário mínimo nacional for the statutory minimum, as horas extraordinárias for overtime, o horário flexível for flexible hours, o teletrabalho for remote working, a conciliação entre a vida profissional e a vida familiar for work-life balance. A student who can deploy that set accurately has most of what a Paper 3 recording on this sub-theme will throw at them.
Attitudes are harder to write about honestly than conditions, because attitudes are exactly the thing an examination candidate cannot evidence with a source. The safe and effective move is to write about them as contested rather than as known. Some commentary presents Portuguese attitudes to work as strongly shaped by long hours and by a culture in which presence at the workplace is itself valued; other commentary emphasises a growing preference among younger workers for flexibility, purpose and the possibility of working remotely. Both readings circulate; neither is settled; and a paragraph that presents both, names them as readings, and then says which the writer finds more persuasive and why is doing exactly what the AO4 grid describes as developing and justifying an argument. Uns defendem que…, outros sublinham que…, e a mim parece-me mais convincente a segunda leitura, porque… is a paragraph shape worth learning as a template.
One structural feature of the Portuguese labour market is documented enough to state plainly and is the natural bridge to the sub-theme's other two aspects. Portugal has a substantial small-business sector, a large share of employment in services and tourism, and a long-standing gap between the qualifications young people now hold and the jobs available to them — a mismatch usually named in Portuguese as o desajustamento entre a formação e o mercado de trabalho, or more bluntly as jovens sobrequalificados para os empregos que encontram. That mismatch is the reason the first sub-theme's research subject, post-secondary education, is not a separate topic but part of the same argument: what people study, what work exists, and whether the two meet is one question asked three ways.
Worked example

Building a paragraph of argued Portuguese from a bare thematic fact

The bare fact: a substantial share of employment in Portugal is in small firms and in services, and many young graduates take work below their level of qualification. Build a paragraph that would earn AO4 marks rather than merely reporting the fact.

  1. 01State the structural feature without adjectives

Uma parte significativa do emprego em Portugal concentra-se em pequenas empresas e no setor dos serviços, sobretudo no turismo e na restauração. Concentrar-se em is the natural verb; the reflexive keeps it impersonal. Setor is the post-Acordo spelling; sector is what you will read in older texts. Note that uma parte significativa is a comparative hedge doing the job an invented percentage would do badly — it commits to a magnitude without pretending to a figure you cannot source in an exam room.

  2. 02Name the consequence as a named phenomenon

Daí resulta um fenómeno frequentemente designado por desajustamento entre a formação e o mercado de trabalho: muitos licenciados ocupam postos que não exigem a qualificação que possuem. Naming the phenomenon in Portuguese is worth marks twice — once for AO3, because designado por is a range structure, and once for AO4, because using the term a Portuguese commentator would use is itself evidence of research. Daí resulta is a consequence connective. Licenciado is a graduate holding a licenciatura, the first cycle degree.

  3. 03Introduce the disagreement about what it means

As leituras deste facto divergem. Para uns, o problema está na oferta de emprego, que não acompanhou o aumento da escolaridade; para outros, está na própria orientação dos cursos, demasiado afastada das necessidades das empresas. Para uns … para outros is the cleanest way in Portuguese to set two readings side by side without endorsing either. Acompanhar here is to keep pace with. Afastada de is removed from. The sentence commits to nothing except that the disagreement exists, which is a true claim.

  4. 04Take a position and justify it

Parece-me mais convincente a primeira leitura, uma vez que a mesma tensão se verifica em cursos de áreas muito diferentes, o que sugere uma causa comum do lado da procura e não do lado da formação. Parece-me is impersonal and modest; note the enclisis, since the clause is affirmative and main. Uma vez que is a causal connective. The justification is an argument from pattern rather than from a statistic, which is the only kind of justification available without notes — and it is a perfectly good one, because the AO4 grid asks for developed and justified arguments, not for citations.

  5. 05Close by connecting to the theme's other sub-theme

Seja qual for a explicação, o problema liga diretamente as duas metades deste tema: aquilo que se estuda depois do secundário e aquilo que o mercado de trabalho realmente oferece. Seja qual for is the future subjunctive of ser in a concessive idiom meaning whatever it may be, and it is a range structure that costs nothing to learn. Closing by tying the paragraph back to the theme's structure shows the examiner that you are answering a question about Tema 1 rather than reciting a page about the economy.

Result: Uma parte significativa do emprego em Portugal concentra-se em pequenas empresas e no setor dos serviços, sobretudo no turismo e na restauração. Daí resulta um fenómeno frequentemente designado por desajustamento entre a formação e o mercado de trabalho: muitos licenciados ocupam postos que não exigem a qualificação que possuem. As leituras deste facto divergem. Para uns, o problema está na oferta de emprego, que não acompanhou o aumento da escolaridade; para outros, está na própria orientação dos cursos, demasiado afastada das necessidades das empresas. Parece-me mais convincente a primeira leitura, uma vez que a mesma tensão se verifica em cursos de áreas muito diferentes, o que sugere uma causa comum do lado da procura. Seja qual for a explicação, o problema liga diretamente as duas metades deste tema.

Exam focus

  • Atitudes face ao trabalho: face a takes no article of its own; the ao belongs to the noun that follows (AO3).
  • Keep conditions and attitudes apart. The gap between them is where the analysis lives (AO4).
  • Precariedade, contrato a termo, por conta de outrem, conciliação — the core lexical set for this sub-theme.
  • Attitudes cannot be evidenced from memory. Present them as competing readings and say which persuades you and why.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing atitudes face o trabalho or atitudes em face do trabalho. The phrase is atitudes face ao trabalho.
  • Treating salário and ordenado as different concepts. They are near-synonyms; the distinction that matters is salário mínimo nacional.
  • Asserting what Portuguese people think about work as a known fact. It is contested and must be attributed.
  • Listing conditions without ever making an argument, which caps the AO4 mark at the description bands.

Active revision

Write two paragraphs of 100 words each in Portuguese. The first describes working conditions for a young graduate in Portugal, using only documented structural features and no numbers. The second describes attitudes to work, using only attributed readings — at least two, in disagreement — and closing with your own justified preference. Then check that not a single sentence in paragraph one contains an evaluative adjective, and that every sentence in paragraph two carries either an attribution or a first-person justification.

§ 03

O desemprego: naming it precisely in Portuguese#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9PG0 Tema 1 — O mundo do trabalho: o desempregoLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

Unemployment is the aspect of Tema 1 where imprecise Portuguese does the most damage, because the language distinguishes kinds of unemployment that English often leaves undifferentiated, and a text or a recording on this aspect will use those distinctions without explaining them. O desemprego is unemployment; um desempregado is an unemployed person; a taxa de desemprego is the unemployment rate. But o desemprego jovem, o desemprego de longa duração and o desemprego estrutural are three different things, and a Section B question that asks which kind a speaker is describing is asking a comprehension question that cannot be answered by knowing the word desemprego alone. Add o subemprego, underemployment, which describes working fewer hours or below one's qualification rather than not working at all, and you have a vocabulary set that lets you read the aspect properly.
The institutional vocabulary matters just as much and is easier to learn because it is concrete. O Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional, usually abbreviated to IEFP, is the Portuguese public employment service, and inscrever-se no centro de emprego is what registering as unemployed is called in ordinary speech. O subsídio de desemprego is the unemployment benefit; estar no desemprego is the everyday phrase for being unemployed; ser despedido is to be dismissed, o despedimento the dismissal, and a rescisão do contrato the termination of a contract. Um estágio is a placement or internship and o estágio profissional a specific kind of subsidised first-job placement — a term that reappears in Tema 1's research subject and that a candidate researching post-secondary education will meet constantly.
The honest way to write about magnitude here is by direction and by comparison, and Portuguese has an unusually good set of tools for it. Tem vindo a diminuir and tem vindo a aumentar are the standard phrases for a trend, and they use the pretérito perfeito composto with vir a plus infinitive — a construction Appendix 2 lists explicitly among the periphrastic forms. Atingiu um pico is reached a peak; recuou is fell back; mantém-se acima da média europeia is stays above the European average. Every one of those makes a real claim without a number attached, and every one of them is the kind of phrase a Portuguese economics journalist would write. A candidate who has these does not need an invented statistic and should never reach for one, because in an examination room with no research documentation any specific figure produced from memory is a guess presented as evidence.
The analytical distinction that separates good answers from adequate ones on this aspect is between unemployment as an aggregate and unemployment as an experience, and the specification effectively asks for both — the aspect sits inside a sub-theme about a vida laboral e atitudes. A rate is a fact about a labour market. Losing a job in a small town where one employer dominates, or being twenty-four with a degree and a sequence of six-month contracts, is a fact about a life, and the two require different Portuguese. The second calls for a vocabulary of experience — a insegurança, a instabilidade, adiar planos, sair de casa dos pais mais tarde, a dependência prolongada da família — and it is here that this sub-theme connects, unmistakably, to the family sub-theme and to Tema 3's emigration. Making that connection explicitly is one of the surest ways to show the AO4 grid a developed argument rather than a list.
Worked example

Paper 3 Section A: an open-response listening question on a numerical claim you must not invent

The recording contains this passage, which you may replay: Depois de ter atingido um pico durante a crise, o desemprego jovem em Portugal recuou de forma significativa, embora se mantenha acima da média da União Europeia. O problema deslocou-se: hoje, mais do que a falta de trabalho, o que preocupa muitos jovens é a instabilidade dos contratos. The question asks: Como é que o orador descreve a evolução do desemprego jovem? (3 marks)

  1. 01Use your individual control of the recording deliberately

Paper 3 Section A lets each student stop, revisit and replay as they wish, so the first pass should be for shape and the second for detail. On the first pass you want only the answer to what is this about and does it go up or down. Here the shape is unmistakable: a peak, then a fall, then a qualification. Do not write anything on the first pass except those three words, because writing while listening is the commonest reason candidates miss the qualification at the end of a sentence.

  2. 02Catch the perfect infinitive at the start

Depois de ter atingido um pico. Depois de plus the perfect infinitive ter atingido is one of the structures Appendix 2 lists, and it locates the peak before the fall. A listener who hears only atingido um pico and writes that unemployment reached a peak has reversed the chronology and lost the whole answer. The construction is worth drilling aurally, because depois de ter is fast in connected speech and the ter can almost disappear.

  3. 03Get the direction verbs exactly

Recuou de forma significativa is fell back significantly — recuar, not diminuir, and the choice of verb is slightly stronger. Embora se mantenha acima da média da União Europeia is the qualification: embora with the present subjunctive mantenha, so remains above the EU average. A three-mark question almost certainly wants three elements, and here they are — a peak, a significant fall, still above the European average. Note that no number was given, so no number belongs in the answer.

  4. 04Do not miss the second sentence, which is part of the description

O problema deslocou-se. Deslocar-se is to shift or move; the speaker is saying the problem has changed shape rather than gone away. Mais do que a falta de trabalho, o que preocupa muitos jovens é a instabilidade dos contratos. This is a genuine part of como é que o orador descreve a evolução, because the evolution described is not only quantitative. If the mark scheme wanted only the three quantitative elements, including the shift costs nothing; if it credits the shift, omitting it costs a mark.

  5. 05Write the answer in your own Portuguese, briefly

Section A answers are short. The trap is padding them with a rephrased version of the question, which wastes time you will want in Section B. Three clauses is enough. Keep the speaker's own hedge — acima da média — because it is part of the description rather than your addition, and keep the tense relations straight: atingiu and recuou in the perfeito, mantém-se in the present.

Result: O orador diz que o desemprego jovem atingiu um pico durante a crise e que depois recuou de forma significativa, mas acrescenta que continua acima da média da União Europeia. Refere ainda que o problema mudou de natureza: hoje preocupa mais a instabilidade dos contratos do que a falta de trabalho.

Exam focus

  • Desemprego jovem, de longa duração, estrutural and subemprego are four different claims. Read which one a source is making (AO2).
  • Tem vindo a aumentar / diminuir: the periphrastic trend construction, and the honest alternative to an invented statistic (AO3).
  • IEFP, centro de emprego, subsídio de desemprego, estágio profissional — the institutional set, concrete and examinable.
  • Aggregate and experience are two different registers. A strong answer moves between them deliberately.

Typical mistakes

  • Using desemprego and subemprego as synonyms. Underemployment is work, not the absence of it.
  • Producing an unemployment rate from memory. There are no notes in the room and the figure will be wrong or out of date.
  • Writing ele é desempregado where Portuguese prefers está desempregado or está no desemprego — a state, not an identity.
  • Describing only the aggregate, which reads as a lifted textbook paragraph and never reaches the higher AO4 bands.

Active revision

Write 200 words in Portuguese on youth unemployment in Portugal in which the first half describes it as an aggregate phenomenon and the second half describes it as an experience. Use at least four of the trend constructions — tem vindo a, atingiu, recuou, mantém-se — and no numbers whatever. Finish with one sentence linking the aspect to family structure and one linking it to emigration, since both links are real and both are examinable elsewhere in the specification.

§ 04

A igualdade de género: an aspect that requires care and rewards precision#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9PG0 Tema 1 — O mundo do trabalho: a igualdade de géneroLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The third aspect of the work sub-theme is a igualdade de género, and it is the aspect where the difference between a documented fact and a contested interpretation is sharpest. Some things are legal facts and can be stated flatly: the Portuguese Constitution of 1976 established equality before the law regardless of sex, and equal pay for equal work is a legal requirement rather than an aspiration. Other things are the subject of continuous public argument in Portugal — whether the law is effective, why a pay gap persists, whether quotas are the right instrument, how domestic and care work is shared — and those belong behind attributions. Writing the first group flatly and the second group with attribution is not timidity. It is the distinction the AO4 grid is built around, and it happens also to be the distinction that makes the paragraph true.
The Portuguese vocabulary is exact and worth learning precisely, because vague phrasing here reads as vague thinking. A igualdade de género is gender equality; a desigualdade salarial or a disparidade salarial entre homens e mulheres is the pay gap; a discriminação no trabalho, direct or indirect; o assédio for harassment. A conciliação entre a vida profissional e a vida familiar returns from the first aspect and is central here, because it is the arena in which the argument mostly happens. A licença parental is parental leave, and Portugal's arrangements distinguish a licença de maternidade, a licença de paternidade and a shared licença parental inicial — a distinction worth knowing because the design of parental leave is one of the concrete policy questions the aspect turns on. O trabalho não remunerado covers unpaid domestic and care work; o teto de vidro is the calque used in Portuguese for the glass ceiling.
One structural feature of Portugal is documented enough to state, and it complicates the picture in a way that makes for good analysis. Portugal has had, for decades, a comparatively high rate of women in full-time paid employment by Western European standards — a legacy in part of the mid-twentieth century, when large numbers of men were absent through emigration and the colonial war and women took paid work in their place. That means the Portuguese conversation about gender and work has often been less about whether women work than about which work, at what pay, with what career progression, and with what share of the unpaid work at home. A candidate who knows that can write something more interesting than a generic paragraph about equality, and can do so without a single invented number.
The care this aspect requires is mostly a matter of grammar, oddly enough, and it is worth naming explicitly. Portuguese marks gender on nouns and adjectives, so writing about gender in Portuguese constantly forces choices English does not: os trabalhadores conventionally covers a mixed group, and as trabalhadoras specifies women; homens e mulheres is the neutral pairing. Some contemporary Portuguese writing uses os trabalhadores e as trabalhadoras or todos e todas to make both visible, and that usage is itself part of the public debate rather than a settled norm. A candidate is not obliged to adopt any position on it, but should be aware that the choice is visible to a Portuguese reader, and that the safest course in an examination is consistent, unremarkable standard usage with the argument carried by the content rather than by the morphology.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section C: turning research notes plus an unseen text into an argued answer on a sensitive aspect

Imagine the Section C statement reads: A igualdade de género no mercado de trabalho português está garantida pela lei, mas não pela prática. Você concorda? Your research subject is Tema 1's, A importância da educação após o ensino secundário em Portugal, so this material reaches you through the education route. Show how the first 120 words of an answer should be built.

  1. 01Answer the statement in the first sentence, not the fourth

Concordo apenas em parte com esta afirmação. A distinção que ela faz entre a lei e a prática é útil, mas simplifica demasiado o que está em causa. Section C answers that spend a paragraph warming up lose AO4 marks to answers that take a position immediately. Apenas em parte is the most useful opening in the whole task, because it commits you to an argument with two sides, which is the shape the top band describes. Note em causa — what is at issue — a phrase worth having.

  2. 02Put the legal fact down flat, because it is a fact

É verdade que a Constituição de 1976 consagra a igualdade perante a lei independentemente do sexo, e que a lei portuguesa impõe salário igual para trabalho igual. Consagrar is the verb Portuguese uses for a constitution establishing a principle, and it is exactly the right register. This sentence needs no hedge because nothing in it is contested; hedging a legal fact wastes words and weakens the paragraph.

  3. 03Bring in the research subject, since that is what AO4 is marking

A minha investigação sobre o ensino pós-secundário mostra, porém, que a questão começa antes do mercado de trabalho. Este is the bridge that makes the answer yours rather than generic, and Section C's AO4 grid marks knowledge and understanding of society and culture based on research. Porém is a mid-sentence contrastive worth using instead of a third mas. The claim itself must be one your own research supports — the pattern of which fields men and women enter, for instance — and the notes deliberately do not supply a substitute, because it has to come from you.

  4. 04Use the unseen text for the AO2 marks, explicitly

O texto refere precisamente esse ponto quando afirma que a diferença se instala cedo, muito antes da entrada no emprego. Section C's AO2 grid, worth ten marks, assesses how well you use information from the unseen text to contribute to your argument. That means naming the text as a source and letting it do work — not summarising it. O texto refere, o texto sublinha, o autor argumenta que: three formulae, all cheap, all visibly discharging the AO2 requirement.

  5. 05Close the opening movement by naming the disagreement rather than resolving it

Onde as leituras divergem é na explicação: uns atribuem a diferença às escolhas individuais, outros às condições em que essas escolhas são feitas. Ending the opening paragraph on the disagreement sets up the rest of the essay and demonstrates, in one sentence, that you know which parts of your material are facts and which are arguments. Atribuir a is to attribute to. The rest of the answer then has an obvious job: weigh those two explanations against your research and the text, and reach a conclusion. That is the structure the top AO4 band describes as convincing conclusions.

Exam focus

  • Constitutional and legal facts stated flatly; effectiveness, causes and remedies attributed as contested (AO4).
  • Disparidade salarial, licença parental, conciliação, trabalho não remunerado, teto de vidro — the precise lexical set (AO3).
  • Portugal's comparatively high female employment rate has historical causes worth naming. It makes the argument specific.
  • Gender morphology is unavoidable when writing about gender in Portuguese. Be consistent and let the content carry the argument.

Typical mistakes

  • Asserting a cause for the pay gap as though it were established. The existence is documentable; the explanation is contested.
  • Inventing a percentage for the gap. There are no notes in the room, and the figure changes year to year.
  • Confusing licença de maternidade with licença parental inicial. The Portuguese system distinguishes them.
  • Treating the aspect as universal rather than Portuguese. Tema 1 is set in Portugal only, and Portugal's history here is specific.

Active revision

Write 200 words in Portuguese on gender equality in the Portuguese workplace, arranged in exactly three paragraphs: what the law establishes, what is empirically observed, and what is disputed. The first paragraph must contain no hedges, the third must contain nothing but attributed positions, and the second must use only comparative and directional language. Then check that the register is consistent and that you have not slipped between o trabalhador and o e a trabalhadora within a single paragraph.

What exists after the twelfth year in Portugal

Fig. 2The research subject's three aspects, mapped onto what a Portuguese school-leaver can actually choose between, because the vocabulary cannot be guessed from an English system. Under aspect 1, universidade and instituto politécnico are the binary higher-education divide, the CTeSP is the shorter professional route offered by polytechnics, and formação profissional covers the IEFP route; the first two are reached through the concurso nacional de acesso. Nothing here is an evaluation — it is a description of the options, which is what the aspect asks for.

Key points

Tema 1's research subject is A importância da educação após o ensino secundário em Portugal, and its three aspects are opções no ensino superior e técnico, estágios and voluntariado. It appears here as well as in the individual-research-project topic because a research subject is not a separate syllabus: it is the theme examined at depth, and a candidate who has understood the family and work sub-themes already holds most of the context this subject needs. One point of accuracy before anything else. The specification prints this heading with a typographical slip, writing importãncia with a tilde where Portuguese requires a circumflex; the word is importância, and it should be written correctly in your own answers whatever the specification does.
The first aspect requires an accurate map of what actually exists in Portugal after the twelfth year, and this is the aspect where an English-speaking candidate is most likely to import a system that is not there. Portuguese higher education is a binary system: universidades and institutos politécnicos, both public and private, both awarding degrees, with the polytechnics historically oriented towards professional and applied programmes. Degrees run in cycles under the Bologna arrangement — a licenciatura for the first cycle, o mestrado for the second, o doutoramento for the third — and there is a distinct shorter route, the cursos técnicos superiores profissionais, generally shortened to CTeSP, offered by polytechnics. Alongside these sit the cursos profissionais taken at secondary level and the wider system of formação profissional. Entry to higher education runs through a national contest, o concurso nacional de acesso, in which a candidate's secondary grade combines with the provas de ingresso, the required subject examinations, to produce a ranking against a numerus clausus. Every one of those terms is examinable vocabulary and none of them can be safely guessed from English.
The second and third aspects are narrower and easier to research well precisely because they are concrete. Um estágio is a placement; um estágio curricular is one embedded in a course of study; um estágio profissional is a first-employment placement, often supported through the IEFP. The vocabulary of the debate around them is worth having: um estágio remunerado or não remunerado, a inserção no mercado de trabalho, adquirir experiência, and the criticism most often voiced in Portuguese public discussion, that unpaid or repeatedly extended placements can substitute for employment rather than lead to it — which is a criticism to attribute, not to assert. O voluntariado is volunteering, um voluntário a volunteer, uma associação or uma organização não governamental the usual hosts, and the debate about it turns on whether it should count towards employability at all, or whether framing it that way empties it of its point.
For the examination itself, three rules govern this subject as they govern all four, and they are absolute. The research must be based on Portugal only, because this is a Tema 1 subject and the specification restricts Temas 1, 3 and 4 to Portugal. All three aspects must be covered: a candidate who researches higher education thoroughly and ignores estágios and voluntariado has not met the requirement, and the Section C question may land on any of them. And the research must not touch either of the works studied for Paper 2. Practically, this means gathering evidence independently from at least two authentic Portuguese sources across all three aspects, and — because no documentation may be taken into the examination room — reducing it all to something memorable: for each aspect, two or three specific, nameable things, and one line of argument that connects them.
Worked example

Translation English into Portuguese on the research subject's own vocabulary (Paper 2 Section A)

Render this into Portuguese. Not every school-leaver goes to university. Some choose a shorter professional course at a polytechnic, which lasts two years and includes a placement in a company. Others do voluntary work for a year before deciding. Whatever they choose, the entry system means that their final grade at school still matters a great deal.

  1. 01School-leaver, and a verb that is not ir

Nem todos os alunos que terminam o secundário entram na universidade. Portuguese has no single word for school-leaver, so a relative clause does the work — os alunos que terminam o secundário — and inventing a compound noun would be worse. Nem todos is the standard negative quantifier and takes the verb in the plural. Entrar na universidade is the idiom for going on to university in the sense of gaining admission; ir para a universidade is possible but weaker, and vão à universidade would mean they visit it.

  2. 02The shorter professional course has a real Portuguese name

Alguns optam por um curso técnico superior profissional num instituto politécnico. This is the CTeSP, and using the actual Portuguese term rather than a translation of the English phrase is worth marks in a translation task and would be worth more in Section C, where it evidences research. Optar por is to choose, with the preposition; escolher would also serve. Num is em + um. Do not translate polytechnic as politécnica alone — the institution is an instituto politécnico.

  3. 03Which lasts two years and includes a placement — relative and verb choice

Que tem a duração de dois anos e inclui um estágio numa empresa. Portuguese prefers ter a duração de or durar for how long something lasts; dura dois anos is equally good and shorter. Estágio is the exact word the research subject uses, and estágio numa empresa specifies a company placement. The relative que refers to curso, and no comma precedes it because the clause is defining.

  4. 04Others do voluntary work — watch the verb and the article

Outros fazem voluntariado durante um ano antes de decidirem. Fazer voluntariado is the collocation; trabalhar voluntariamente is intelligible but not idiomatic. Voluntariado takes no article here. The decisive item is antes de decidirem: the subject of decidir is outros, different from nothing in the main clause but plural and specific, so the personal infinitive is inflected — decidirem, not decidir. That single ending is exactly the kind of segment a points-based scheme awards or refuses.

  5. 05Whatever they choose — a future subjunctive idiom, and a comparative intensifier

Seja o que for que escolham, o sistema de acesso faz com que a nota final do secundário continue a ter muito peso. Seja o que for is the future subjunctive of ser in the fixed concessive meaning whatever it may be; escolham is present subjunctive under it. Fazer com que takes the subjunctive too — continue, not continua. O sistema de acesso names the concurso nacional de acesso without spelling it out. Ter peso is the natural Portuguese for to matter or to carry weight, and muito peso renders a great deal far better than muito importante would.

Result: Nem todos os alunos que terminam o secundário entram na universidade. Alguns optam por um curso técnico superior profissional num instituto politécnico, que tem a duração de dois anos e inclui um estágio numa empresa. Outros fazem voluntariado durante um ano antes de decidirem. Seja o que for que escolham, o sistema de acesso faz com que a nota final do secundário continue a ter muito peso.

Exam focus

  • The heading is A importância — the specification's importãncia is a drafting slip and must not be reproduced (AO3).
  • Universidade and instituto politécnico; licenciatura, mestrado, doutoramento, CTeSP; concurso nacional de acesso, provas de ingresso, numerus clausus (AO3 and AO4).
  • Portugal only, all three aspects, and nothing drawn from the Paper 2 works. Those three rules are absolute.
  • Estágio curricular and estágio profissional are different things; the criticism of unpaid placements is attributed, not asserted.

Typical mistakes

  • Describing British higher education in Portuguese words. Portugal has a binary system with its own entry mechanism.
  • Researching only the first aspect. All three are examinable and Section C may ask about any of them.
  • Reproducing the specification's importãncia. Write importância.
  • Treating voluntariado only as employability. Whether it should be framed that way is itself the debate.

Active revision

Build the memorisable core of this research subject in one page. For each of the three aspects write three specifics you could name in an examination room from memory — an institution, a term, a named programme type, a documented arrangement — and one sentence of argument connecting the aspect to the theme's question about importância. Then close the page, and write the whole thing again from memory in Portuguese. Whatever survives that second writing is what you will actually have in the exam.

Recall the key points — then reveal.
