Lens- and light-based image production

The photograph is not finished at the moment of capture - it is produced and processed afterwards, chemically in the darkroom or digitally on the computer, and this stage is a creative part of the medium, not mere technical finishing. This topic covers producing and processing images both ways: the chemical darkroom (developing film and making prints, with dodging, burning and contrast control); digital processing and editing (RAW adjustment, tone, colour and cropping in software); photo-manipulation, montage and compositing; and, above all, processing understood as a creative decision that shapes an image's tone, contrast, colour, crop, mood and meaning.

Key points

A photograph is made in two acts: capture, when light is recorded by the camera, and production or processing, when that recorded image is turned into a finished picture. This second act is often underrated by beginners, who think the photograph is 'taken' and finished at the shutter press - but in fact the captured image (a latent image on film, or a RAW file on a sensor) is only raw material, and how it is processed shapes the final result profoundly. Understanding that the photograph is produced, not merely taken, is the key idea of this topic, and it applies equally to film and to digital.
There are two great production routes, corresponding to the two media. In the chemical route, exposed film carries a latent (invisible) image that is made visible by developing it into a negative, from which prints are then made in the darkroom. In the digital route, the sensor's data is stored as a file (ideally RAW) that is then processed in editing software into a finished image for screen or print. The two routes are technically very different - wet chemistry versus digital software - but they perform the same job: taking the captured image and turning it, through a series of creative and technical decisions, into the finished photograph.
Both routes involve real creative control, and this is the crucial point. Production is not a neutral, automatic conversion; at every stage the photographer makes decisions that change the image - how light or dark it is overall, how contrasty, how the tones and colours read, how it is cropped, and whether and how it is manipulated. These decisions can transform the same captured image into very different final photographs. Because the outcome depends so much on production, learning to process deliberately is as much a part of photographic craft as learning to shoot - and the two work together, a considered image often being made in both the capture and the processing.
The parallel between the two routes is worth holding in mind, because it demystifies both. The darkroom's core operations - controlling exposure and contrast, and lightening or darkening areas locally (dodging and burning) - correspond directly to digital editing's exposure, contrast and local adjustment tools. Digital editing is, in this sense, the modern form of the finishing craft photographers have always practised, not a betrayal of 'real' photography. Whichever route you use, you are doing the same thing: producing a finished photograph from a captured image, through decisions that shape its final look and meaning.
This topic takes each route in turn - the chemical darkroom, then digital processing and editing - then looks at photo-manipulation and montage (which digital especially enables), and finally at processing as a creative decision that carries mood and meaning. One capture, two productions

A single RAW file of a moody seascape could become two very different photographs. Show how production decides the outcome.

Key points

The darkroom is where film photography is developed and printed, and it is a genuinely creative space. The process has two stages. First, the exposed film is developed: in light-tight tanks, the film is treated with developer (which turns the latent image into visible silver), stop bath (which halts development) and fixer (which makes the image permanent and light-safe), then washed and dried, producing negatives. Second, prints are made from the negatives under safelight in the darkroom itself. Understanding this two-stage chemical process is the basis of analogue production.
Printing is where most darkroom creativity happens. The negative is placed in an enlarger, which projects its image, enlarged, down onto a sheet of light-sensitive photographic paper; the paper is exposed for a carefully judged time, then developed, stopped, fixed, washed and dried in trays - reversing the negative's tones back to a positive print. The photographer controls the overall lightness by the exposure time, and the contrast by the paper grade (or filters) - a high grade gives punchy blacks and whites, a low grade gives softer greys. Getting a good print is a skilled, iterative business of test strips and judgement.
The darkroom's most expressive techniques are dodging and burning - local control of the print's tones. Dodging means holding back light from part of the print during exposure (often with a small tool or your hand), so that area receives less exposure and comes out lighter; burning means giving extra light to an area (masking the rest), so it comes out darker. With these, the photographer can lighten a face that would otherwise be too dark, hold detail in a bright sky, darken distracting edges, or draw the eye - fine-tuning the tonal balance of the print far beyond what a single overall exposure allows. Ansel Adams famously raised this local printing control to a high art.
Working in the darkroom shapes how you understand photography. It is slow, physical and hands-on: you handle the film and paper, mix and watch the chemistry, and see the image emerge in the developer tray - a tactile engagement that deepens your grasp of exposure, tone and contrast. Because each print takes time and materials, you work deliberately, judging each step. The chemical print also has a particular tonal quality and physical presence that many photographers value. Even limited darkroom experience teaches the fundamentals of tone and processing vividly, and it illuminates what digital editing is doing.
For a student, the darkroom (where available) offers distinctive AO2 evidence and a distinctive quality of image. Experimenting with development, paper grades, dodging and burning, and darkroom-based experimental processes (photograms, covered in the experimental topic) demonstrates real exploration of process. And understanding the darkroom - even if you work mainly digitally - lets you write about analogue photographers' work with real insight (AO1), and grasps the finishing craft that digital editing inherited. The darkroom is where the photographic print is physically made, and knowing it completes your understanding of the medium.
Worked example

Rescuing a print with dodging and burning

A darkroom print of a portrait has a face that is too dark and a background window that is blown out too bright. How do you fix it in printing?

  1. 01Diagnose the tones

    At the exposure that suits the mid-tones, the face prints too dark (needs less exposure there) and the bright window prints with no detail (needs more exposure there).

  2. 02Dodge the face

    During the print exposure, hold back light from the face for part of the time (dodging), so it receives less exposure and prints lighter, recovering its detail.

  3. 03Burn the window

    After the base exposure, give the bright window extra exposure while masking the rest (burning), so it prints darker and its detail returns.

  4. 04Judge with a test strip

    Use test strips to find the right base exposure, dodge and burn times, iterating until the print balances the face and window - the darkroom's local tonal control.

Result: Dodging the dark face lighter and burning the bright window darker balances the print's tones - demonstrating the darkroom's creative local control beyond a single overall exposure.

Digital processing and editing#

Key points

Digital processing takes the file from the sensor and turns it into a finished image in editing software, and it offers vast, precise creative control - the modern equivalent of the darkroom, and then some. The workhorse programs are Adobe Lightroom (designed for organising and adjusting whole shoots) and Adobe Photoshop (designed for detailed, pixel-level editing and manipulation), though many alternatives exist. Working on a RAW file (which preserves all the sensor's data) gives the greatest latitude, and non-destructive editing means adjustments can be revised freely without degrading the original - so digital processing is forgiving and endlessly refinable.
The core adjustments correspond to the darkroom's controls and extend them. You can set the overall exposure (lightness) and recover detail in highlights and shadows independently; adjust contrast (the spread between dark and light); set the white balance and adjust colour (hue, saturation, individual colour channels); convert to black-and-white with control over how each colour maps to grey; sharpen and reduce noise; and crop and straighten. These global and selective adjustments let you realise the tone, contrast, colour and mood you intend - the same finishing decisions the darkroom offered, made faster, more precisely and more reversibly.
Digital editing also offers local, targeted control far beyond the darkroom's dodging and burning. With masks, adjustment brushes, gradients and selections, you can adjust one part of an image independently - brighten a face, darken a sky, warm a foreground, sharpen the eyes, blur a background - with precision. You can remove blemishes and distractions (a stray object, a spot), clone and heal, and make dozens of fine local decisions. Used well, this is refined finishing that realises the photographer's vision; the darkroom's local control taken to a new level of precision and reversibility.
Because the control is so powerful, digital editing demands discipline and judgement. The temptation is to over-process - crushing the tones, over-saturating the colours, over-sharpening, or applying heavy 'effects' - producing images that look garish or artificial and serve no purpose. Restraint usually reads as quality: the strongest editing often looks invisible, simply making the image the best version of itself. Editing should serve the intention and the subject, not show off the software. As with all technique, the question is always whether an adjustment helps the photograph say what you mean.
For AO2, digital processing is fertile ground for evidenced exploration and refinement: showing different processing treatments of an image, refining toward a chosen look, and demonstrating control of tone, contrast, colour and local adjustment. Keep the evidence of your editing decisions and iterations. And keep the honesty question in view: adjustment of exposure, tone and colour is normal and expected, but altering the content of an image (adding or removing elements) crosses into manipulation, which is a legitimate creative tool in expressive work but an ethical issue in documentary - a distinction the next section and the documentary topic develop.
Worked example

A disciplined digital edit

A student's RAW portrait is a little dark, flat and cool, with a distracting bright patch behind the subject. Plan a disciplined edit.

  1. 01Global tone and colour

    Lift the overall exposure slightly, add a touch of contrast to give the flat image life, and warm the white balance a little so the skin reads naturally.

  2. 02Recover and shape

    Pull back any lost highlight detail and open the shadows just enough, keeping the tones natural rather than crushed or over-lifted.

  3. 03Local adjustment

    Mask the distracting bright patch behind the subject and darken it locally so it stops pulling the eye; subtly brighten and sharpen the eyes.

  4. 04Judge restraint

    Stop before it looks processed - the aim is a natural, well-finished portrait, the best version of the capture, not an obviously edited image.

Result: Modest global tone and colour, targeted recovery, and local darkening of the distraction produce a natural, well-finished portrait - disciplined editing that serves the image invisibly.

Key points

Beyond adjusting an image, processing can radically alter or combine images - photo-manipulation, montage and compositing - and these are powerful creative techniques, especially in digital editing. Manipulation means changing the content of an image: adding or removing elements, distorting, transforming, or altering it beyond tonal and colour adjustment. Photomontage means combining parts of several images into one new image. Compositing means seamlessly blending elements from different sources into a single convincing (or deliberately unconvincing) image. Together they let the photographer construct images that no single exposure could capture.
These techniques have a long history that predates digital. Photographers combined negatives and montaged prints in the darkroom from the nineteenth century, and photomontage was a major technique of avant-garde art in the early twentieth century, used to make surprising, critical or dreamlike images. Digital tools have made manipulation and compositing far easier and more seamless, but the creative idea is old: building an image from parts, or altering reality, to make something expressive that straight photography cannot. Knowing this history (developed in the contextual and experimental topics) grounds your own manipulated work.
In practice, digital montage and compositing rely on selections, masks and layers. You select or mask an element from one image, place it on another as a layer, and blend it - matching the lighting, colour, scale and edges so the composite reads as intended. A surreal image might place a whale in a city sky; a constructed portrait might merge several exposures; a clean product shot might composite the best of several frames. The craft lies in the seamlessness (or deliberate roughness) of the blending and in the coherence of the constructed image - a good composite is convincing or purposeful, a poor one looks like a clumsy cut-and-paste.
Manipulation raises the honesty question sharply, and the answer depends entirely on the kind of work. In expressive, experimental, fashion and fine-art photography, manipulation is a fully legitimate creative tool - the constructed, altered image is part of the medium's expressive range, and no one expects it to be a literal record. In documentary and photojournalism, by contrast, altering the content of an image is an ethical violation, because such images claim to record reality and are trusted as evidence; adding or removing elements there is a serious breach. Knowing which register you are working in tells you whether manipulation is a creative freedom or a forbidden deception.
For your own practice, manipulation, montage and compositing are rich territory for experimental and constructed work, offering strong AO2 exploration and the ability to realise images that exist only in your imagination. Approach them purposefully - manipulation should serve an idea, not be effect for its own sake - and keep the evidence of how you built a composite (the source images, the stages) as part of your working documents. And always be clear about the register: construct freely in expressive work, but never alter the content of an image that presents itself as documentary truth.
Worked example

When is manipulation legitimate?

Two students remove an object from a photo: one from a surreal fine-art composite, one from a news photograph of a protest. Judge each.

Key points

The deepest point of this topic is that processing is a creative decision that shapes an image's mood and meaning, not just its technical quality. Every processing choice - the overall lightness, the contrast, the colour treatment, the crop, any manipulation - changes how the photograph feels and what it says. A high-contrast, gritty black-and-white treatment makes an image feel harsh, dramatic or documentary; a soft, low-contrast, warm treatment makes the same subject feel gentle, nostalgic or dreamlike; a cool, desaturated treatment can feel bleak or melancholy. Processing is where much of a photograph's emotional register is set, so it must serve the intention.
Contrast and tone are among the most powerful expressive levers. High contrast (deep blacks, bright whites, few mid-tones) reads as bold, energetic, stark or dramatic; low contrast (soft, close greys, no true black or white) reads as gentle, muted, atmospheric or faded. The distribution of tone - a dark, low-key image versus a bright, high-key one - similarly sets mood: low-key feels sombre, mysterious or dramatic, high-key feels light, clean or ethereal. Deciding the contrast and tonal key of your processing is deciding a large part of the image's feeling.
Colour treatment is equally expressive. The choice to work in colour or black-and-white, the warmth or coolness of the white balance, the saturation (vivid or muted), and any colour grading (pushing the shadows cool and highlights warm, say) all shape mood. A consistent colour treatment across a series also unifies it and gives it a signature look. Because colour carries such strong associations - warmth, coldness, nostalgia, unease - shaping it in processing is one of the most direct ways to set the emotional tone of a body of work.
Cropping, too, is a creative decision that changes meaning, not just composition. A tight crop can intensify and abstract; a wide crop can contextualise; a change of format (to square, panoramic or portrait) alters how the image is read. And the coherence of processing across a body of work matters: a consistent treatment (tone, colour, crop) makes a series read as one considered whole, while inconsistent processing makes it feel scattered. Deciding a processing 'look' for a project, and applying it coherently, is part of resolving a personal response (AO4).
So process with intention. For each image and each project, ask what mood and meaning you want, and let that guide the tone, contrast, colour, crop and any manipulation - rather than applying a default or a fashionable filter. Keep the evidence of your processing decisions and experiments (strong AO2), and process your final response coherently toward the feeling you intend (strong AO4). Because production is where the captured image finally becomes the photograph, processing deliberately - as a creative decision that carries mood and meaning - is one of the most important and often most neglected skills in the whole discipline.

Choosing a processing treatment for a project's mood

A student's project is about faded memory and the passing of time in an old seaside town. What processing treatment suits it, and how should it be applied?
