ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ: youth culture and the evolution of the digital world

This topic is theme 3.1.1 of AQA 7682, Aspects of Panjabi-speaking society: past and current trends, and it covers BOTH of that theme's sub-themes. Sub-theme 3.1.1.1, Youth culture, carries the three bullet aspects fashion and trends, the role of celebrity, and traditional versus modern values. Sub-theme 3.1.1.2, The evolution of the digital world, carries the internet in daily life, social media - benefits and dangers, and the digitalisation of Panjabi society. Each of the five sections below says which bullet it serves. The platform's topic id is social-issues-and-trends-1. Two framing decisions run through everything here and are made once, openly. First, the specification says the Punjab throughout and never once says Pakistan or India, so these notes name which Punjab - the Indian state, the Pakistani province or the diaspora - on every institutional claim, because a phone tariff, a payment app, a broadcasting regulator and a school system are different things on the two sides of the 1947 line. Second, this is a listening, reading and writing qualification with no speaking assessment at all, so every piece of vocabulary here is given in a form you can WRITE, in Gurmukhi, with transliteration so you can also say it. The exam technique this topic carries is the Paper 1 reading summary, whose content and language marks are awarded independently.

basic level

In the first year, build the two vocabulary fields this theme lives on - dress and appearance, and the phone and what people do with it - and learn to describe a change rather than a state. The single most useful structure is ਪਹਿਲਾਂ … ਹੁਣ …, before and now, because almost every question in this theme is really a question about change. Read one Panjabi news site regularly and collect the words it uses for technology; most of them are borrowed and spelled in ways you have to learn.

higher level

The full A-Level expects you to explain rather than describe, and to know which Punjab your claim is about. Two disciplines separate a good answer from an average one here. The first is naming the institution: not the internet is popular but which payment system, which regulator, which language of interface. The second is refusing the invented statistic: describe direction and mechanism, name the body that publishes the number, and never produce a percentage from memory.

ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਤੇ ਰੁਝਾਨ: fashion and trends#

●○○FoundationLPAQA 7682 - 3.1.1.1 Sub-theme: Youth culture - Fashion and trends

Key points

Panjabi dress vocabulary is worth learning as a precise set rather than a vague gesture, because a stimulus text will name garments and expect you to know them. The everyday women's outfit across both Punjabs is the ਸਲਵਾਰ ਕਮੀਜ਼ (salvār kamīz), the loose trousers and tunic, worn with a ਦੁਪੱਟਾ (dupaṭṭā), the long scarf; the wide-pleated ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਸਲਵਾਰ (paṭiālā salvār) is named after the town it is associated with. Men's traditional dress is the ਕੁੜਤਾ ਪਜਾਮਾ (kuṛtā pajāmā), with the ਚਾਦਰਾ or ਤਹਿਮਦ (chādrā, tahimad) still worn in rural areas on both sides of the border. The ਪੱਗ or ਦਸਤਾਰ (pagg, dastār), the turban, is worn as an article of faith by Sikh men and as regional dress by others; the ਜੁੱਤੀ (juttī) is the embroidered leather shoe; ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ (phulkārī) is the flower-work embroidery tradition of the region, now as much a design motif as a garment.
The examinable content is not the list but the change, and change here runs in more than one direction at once. Western casual dress has become ordinary for young people in the cities of both Punjabs - ਜੀਨਾਂ (jīnāṅ), ਟੀ-ਸ਼ਰਟ, ਸਨੀਕਰ - while traditional dress has moved from being everyday wear towards being occasion wear, worn at weddings, at festivals and, increasingly, as a deliberate statement. At the same time regional dress has been reclaimed as fashion: the ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ shawl and the ਜੁੱਤੀ are sold as designer items in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Lahore and Southall alike, and diaspora demand is part of what sustains that market. A candidate who writes only that young people now wear Western clothes has described half of a two-way movement.
Three mechanisms explain the trends, and naming a mechanism is what turns description into analysis. First, the visual economy of Panjabi music video: a genre whose songs are distributed almost entirely by video has made dress part of the product, and clothing seen in a video is bought in a market weeks later. Second, the diaspora loop: clothes designed in the Punjab are worn in Britain, Canada and Italy, and styles that develop in diaspora communities travel back. Third, price and manufacture: Ludhiana in Indian Punjab and Faisalabad in Pakistani Punjab are both major textile and garment centres, so what is fashionable and what is locally manufacturable are not independent of each other. Each of these can be argued with examples and none of them requires a number.
The structures that make this bullet writable are the structures of comparison and change. ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਦਾ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਸਨ, ਹੁਣ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਬ੍ਰਾਂਡਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਖਿੱਚੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। - people used to wear plain dress; now the young are drawn to brands. Note ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਸਨ, the past habitual, which is the single most useful tense in this whole theme. For comparison use ਨਾਲੋਂ: ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਤੇਜ਼ ਹੈ। - change is faster in the cities than in the villages. For a gradual process use ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ or ਦਿਨੋ-ਦਿਨ: ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਦਿਨੋ-ਦਿਨ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਮੌਕਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। - traditional dress is day by day becoming confined to special occasions.
Worked example

Building an argued paragraph of Panjabi from one bare fact

You know one fact: Ludhiana is a large garment-manufacturing city. Turn it into a paragraph that would earn AO4 credit rather than sitting there as a fact.

  1. 01State the fact plainly first

ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਸਨਅਤ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਹੈ। - Ludhiana is a large centre of the clothing industry. True, and by itself worth nothing: an examiner cannot tell whether you understand it.

  2. 02Add the consequence

    ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਵਾਂ ਰੁਝਾਨ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਤੱਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਛੇਤੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। - the effect is that a new trend reaches the market very quickly. ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ is a four-word frame that converts any fact into a claim.

  3. 03Connect it to the young

    ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਗਾਣਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਕੁਝ ਹਫ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਰੀਦ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। - which is why young people can buy within a few weeks the clothes they have seen in a music video. Now two facts are doing work on each other.

  4. 04Introduce the counter-movement

    ਪਰ ਇਹੀ ਸਨਅਤ ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਜੁੱਤੀ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਨਵੇਂ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੇਚਦੀ ਹੈ। - but the same industry also sells traditional items like phulkari and jutti in new forms. ਪਰ ਇਹੀ … ਵੀ is the concessive that stops the paragraph being one-sided.

  5. 05Close with a limited judgement

    ਮੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਫ਼ੈਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਸਨਅਤ ਦਾ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ। - in my view the change in fashion is not merely Western influence but also a result of local industry. The frame ਸਿਰਫ਼ … ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ … ਵੀ is the most valuable single structure in this theme.

  6. 06Check what you actually did

You added no new knowledge. You took one fact, drew a consequence, connected it to the people the question is about, admitted a counter-movement and judged with a limit. That is the whole of the AO4 ladder, and it works on any fact in any sub-theme.

Five sentences, one fact, four moves.

Exam focus

  • Learn the garment names as spellings, not as sounds: ਸਲਵਾਰ ਕਮੀਜ਼, ਦੁਪੱਟਾ, ਕੁੜਤਾ, ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ, ਜੁੱਤੀ, ਦਸਤਾਰ.
  • The past habitual ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਸਨ is the workhorse tense of the whole trends theme.
  • Trends move in two directions: towards Western casual wear and back towards reclaimed regional dress. Say both.
  • Name a mechanism - music video, the diaspora loop, local textile manufacture - rather than asserting that fashion simply changes.

Typical mistakes

  • Treating dress as decoration rather than as evidence about social change.
  • Writing about the Punjab as though only Indian Punjab existed; Faisalabad and Lahore are Panjabi-speaking garment and fashion centres too.
  • Using the present tense for what used to happen. ਲੋਕ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਸਨ, not ਲੋਕ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ.
  • Claiming a percentage of young people who wear anything. Describe direction, not magnitude.
  • Confusing ਪੱਗ as religious observance with ਪੱਗ as regional or occasional dress; both exist and the difference matters.

ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਹਸਤੀਆਂ: the role of celebrity#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7682 - 3.1.1.1 Sub-theme: Youth culture - The role of celebrity

Key points

Panjabi celebrity is unusual in one structurally important way: the audience is far larger than the place. Panjabi-language music and film are consumed by Panjabi speakers in Indian Punjab, in Pakistani Punjab and across a diaspora that is among the largest of any South Asian regional community, so a Panjabi singer can have an international following without ever crossing into another language. That fact alone answers a great many exam questions about influence. It also explains why so much Panjabi celebrity is musical rather than cinematic: distribution by video-streaming platform costs almost nothing, needs no cinema chain, and reaches Birmingham, Brampton, Lahore and Ludhiana in the same instant.
Write about celebrity with dated anchors rather than with names alone, because a name without a date is not evidence. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who died in 1997, is the standard example of a Pakistani Panjabi performer whose recordings of Sufi kalam in Panjabi reached a worldwide audience and who is still cited in both countries. Surinder Kaur, who died in 2006, is the corresponding anchor for Panjabi folk singing in India, where she was long known by the epithet the nightingale of the Punjab. Alam Lohar, who died in 1979, is associated with the folk form ਜੁਗਨੀ (jugnī), still recycled by contemporary singers. Milkha Singh, who died in 2021, is the athlete whose fame and whose survival of the 1947 Partition are both documented and who therefore connects this sub-theme to research topic 3.5.4. Living celebrities change; use them if your own research is current, and date what you say about them.
The analytical content of this bullet is the MECHANISM of celebrity, and there are four worth naming. Endorsement: a singer's association with a clothing brand, a telecom operator or a beverage converts audience into sales, and the ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰ (ishtihār, advertisement) is where you can see it. Political use: parties in both Punjabs have recruited performers as candidates and campaigners, which is a documented pattern and a good link to sub-theme 3.2.2.2. Social influence: campaigns on road safety, drug use, girls education and organ donation have used performers, and their effect is argued about rather than measured. And the counter-current: public criticism of Panjabi song lyrics for glamorising guns, alcohol and caste pride is a recurring debate in Indian Punjab, has produced regulatory complaints and advisory guidance, and is a live argument you should present as an argument with two sides rather than as a settled verdict.
The register for writing about celebrity is worth getting right. Panjabi uses ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਹਸਤੀ (mashhūr hastī) or ਸ਼ਖ਼ਸੀਅਤ (shakhsīat) for a public figure, ਗਾਇਕ / ਗਾਇਕਾ (gāik, gāikā) for a singer, ਅਦਾਕਾਰ / ਅਦਾਕਾਰਾ (adākār, adākārā) for an actor, ਖਿਡਾਰੀ (khiḍārī) for a sportsperson and ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ੰਸਕ (prashaṅsak) for a fan. Influence is ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ (prabhāv) or ਅਸਰ (asar), an idol is ਆਦਰਸ਼ (ādarsh), and to imitate is ਨਕਲ ਕਰਨਾ (nakal karnā). Two frames do most of the work: ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ। - young people take them as their model; and ਇਸ ਦਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਅਸਰ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾੜਾ ਵੀ। - this has a good effect and a bad one too.
Worked example

Reading comprehension worked through on a celebrity passage

A Paper 1 stimulus text reads:

  1. 01Read the question before the text

The question asks for TWO different opinions according to the writer. That tells you the answer has two halves and that neither half is your own view. Half-answers are the commonest loss of marks in this section.

  2. 02Locate the two opinion-bearers

ਕੁਝ ਮਾਪੇ … ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ and ਗਾਇਕ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ. The connective ਜਦਕਿ, whereas, is the signpost: in Panjabi prose ਜਦਕਿ almost always separates two contrasted positions, and finding it finds the answer.

  3. 03Decide whether you may lift

This is a comprehension question with no AO3 language mark, so the specification permits you to use words from the text without rephrasing. That permission is not unlimited: an answer that lifts an element which does not match the phrasing of the question set earns nothing. So lift the two positions, but not the sentence about Canada and Italy, which is irrelevant to this question.

  4. 04Write only what is asked

Two positions, both attributed, nothing added.

  5. 05Check the attribution words

ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, according to, is doing the load-bearing work. Without it the answer reads as your opinion, and the question asked for the writer's report of other people's opinions. In this sub-theme especially, an unattributed opinion is a wrong answer even when the content is right.

  6. 06Check for imported material

You know things about the lyrics debate that this text does not contain. None of them belongs here. The content mark is withheld where the answer includes irrelevant material, and a comprehension answer is the one place in the whole paper where knowing more can cost you.

The method: read the question first, find the contrastive connective, lift only what matches the phrasing set, attribute both sides, add nothing.

Exam focus

  • The audience for Panjabi celebrity is larger than the Punjab. That single structural fact answers many questions about influence.
  • Attach a date to any celebrity you name; a name with no date is not evidence.
  • Four mechanisms: endorsement, political recruitment, social campaigning, and the public argument about lyrics.
  • The lyrics debate has two evidenced sides. Present it as an argument, not as a verdict.

Typical mistakes

  • Listing famous names with no claim attached to any of them.
  • Treating Panjabi celebrity as an Indian Punjab phenomenon only; Pakistani Panjabi performers have their own history and audience.
  • Asserting that music causes crime, or that it does not. Both are contested positions and both need attribution.
  • Confusing ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ੰਸਕ, a fan, with ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ੰਸਾ, praise.
  • Writing about a living celebrity's current status from memory rather than from current research.

ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਨਵੀਆਂ ਕਦਰਾਂ-ਕੀਮਤਾਂ: traditional versus modern values#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7682 - 3.1.1.1 Sub-theme: Youth culture - Traditional versus modern values

Key points

The bullet is phrased as an opposition and the strongest answers refuse it. What the evidence in both Punjabs actually shows is negotiation rather than replacement: the same young person may expect to choose their own career and still expect their marriage to be arranged with family agreement; may live in a nuclear household and still send money to parents monthly; may reject caste as an idea and still know exactly what everyone's is. The Panjabi words for the two poles are worth having exactly: ਰਵਾਇਤੀ (ravāitī) traditional, ਆਧੁਨਿਕ (ādhunik) modern, ਕਦਰਾਂ-ਕੀਮਤਾਂ (kadrāṅ-kīmtāṅ) values, ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਪਾੜਾ (pīṛhī pāṛā) the generation gap, ਸੋਚ (soch) way of thinking. And the word that does the negotiating is ਸੰਤੁਲਨ (santulan), balance.
The family is where the argument is most visible. The ਸਾਂਝਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ (sāñjhā parivār), the joint household of several married brothers and their parents, has been giving way in the towns of both Punjabs to the ਇਕਹਿਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ (ikahirā parivār), the nuclear household, while remaining common in villages; emigration has produced a third pattern in which the household is joint but split across continents. Respect for elders, ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ, is still stated as a core value on both sides of the border and is also the subject of public concern about the care of old people whose children have emigrated - a documented and much-discussed phenomenon in rural Indian Punjab in particular.
Marriage, dowry and honour are the hard part of this bullet and they must be handled as legal and social facts rather than as opinions. Arranged marriage remains the norm across both Punjabs, with the degree of consent and choice varying widely and increasing among the urban educated; the ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ (rishtā) system and the role of ਬਰਾਦਰੀ (barādarī), the endogamous kin-group, are documented realities. Dowry, ਦਾਜ (dāj), is prohibited by legislation in both countries: India by the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 and Pakistan by the Dowry and Bridal Gifts (Restriction) Act 1976, in each case as subsequently amended. The persistence of the practice despite the legislation is documented by researchers and reported in the press in both countries. So-called honour-based violence is a documented phenomenon in the Panjabi-speaking world and in the diaspora; Pakistan legislated specifically on it in 2016 with the Criminal Law (Amendment) (Offences in the Name or Pretext of Honour) Act. State the law and its date, attribute assessments of how well it works, and do not discuss individual cases.
The vocabulary of value-talk needs precision because vagueness reads as evasion. ਇੱਜ਼ਤ (izzat) is honour or standing, and it is not a synonym for ਸਤਿਕਾਰ (satikār), respect shown to someone. ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ (āzādī) is freedom, ਹੱਕ (hakk) is a right, ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ (farz) is a duty, ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ (zimmevārī) is responsibility. The frames that hold two things together are the ones to memorise: ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੇ … ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ … on the one hand and on the other; ਭਾਵੇਂ … ਫਿਰ ਵੀ … although, even so; and ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ … ਸਗੋਂ … not only but also. ਭਾਵੇਂ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਿੱਤਾ ਆਪ ਚੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਵਿਆਹ ਬਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਇ ਅਹਿਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। - although young people choose their own occupation, the family's view about marriage still matters.
Worked example

Choosing a register: the honorific decision, walked through

You are writing a Paper 3 multi-skill answer that reports what an elderly speaker said and then what a student said. Panjabi forces you to choose a level of address and reference for each. Work the decision.

  1. 01Know the three levels

ਤੂੰ (tūṅ) is the intimate singular, used to children, close friends and, in religious address, to God. ਤੁਸੀਂ (tusīṅ) is the plural and the polite singular - the default for anyone you do not know well and for anyone older. ਆਪ (āp) is the formal, used in speeches, in letters and to strangers in writing. In a written exam answer, ਤੁਸੀਂ is almost always correct and ਤੂੰ almost always wrong.

  2. 02Notice that reference is honorific too, not just address

Panjabi marks respect in the THIRD person as well: ਉਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ he says, versus ਉਹ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, with plural agreement, of a respected person. Reporting an elderly speaker as ਉਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ is not a grammatical error but it is a register error, and register errors are visible to a marker.

  3. 03Apply it to the elderly speaker

    ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਬੁਲਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। - the elderly speaker says that formerly the whole family lived together. The frame ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ is itself respectful and sidesteps the agreement question elegantly.

  4. 04Apply it to the student

ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥਣ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਰਾਹ ਚੁਣਨ ਦਾ ਹੱਕ ਹੈ। - the student's view is that every generation has the right to choose its own path. Note ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥਣ, the feminine of ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ; getting the gender of the agent noun right is a cheap AO3 mark.

  5. 05Hold the two together

ਦੋਵੇਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਹੈ। - hearing both, it seems that this is not a conflict but a conversation. The conjunctive participle ਸੁਣ ਕੇ, having heard, is one of the structures section 3.3.6 names, and using it deliberately is how you earn the range mark.

  6. 06Check the whole answer for register drift

Reread and ask of every verb: whose voice is this and what level did I choose? The commonest fault is starting formal and sliding into ਤੂੰ-level informality halfway down, usually at the point where the writer starts expressing their own feelings.

Result: Two reported positions, each in the right register, joined by a conjunctive participle:

Exam focus

  • Refuse the either-or. The evidence shows negotiation, and saying so is the analytical move the bullet rewards.
  • Dowry legislation: India 1961, Pakistan 1976. Both as amended. Legal facts and dates, then stop.
  • Pakistan's 2016 legislation on offences in the name or pretext of honour is a dated fact worth knowing; assessments of its effect are attributed, never asserted.
  • ਇੱਜ਼ਤ and ਸਤਿਕਾਰ are not interchangeable, and using the wrong one changes the sentence.

Typical mistakes

  • Presenting tradition and modernity as a straight replacement of one by the other.
  • Writing about a whole society's morals in the first person plural, as though the candidate spoke for it.
  • Naming or discussing an individual case of family violence. Legal facts and dates; no cases.
  • Assuming that the legal position is identical in the two countries. It is not, and the dates differ.
  • Treating the joint family as extinct. It is not, and the split transnational household is a third pattern the bullet rewards you for noticing.

Fig. 1The internet arrived in the Punjab on a phone, so the phone is the branch, the counter, the newsstand and the classroom at once. The node drawn in heavier ink is the one the specification's own bullet invites you to remember: the reach is not universal, and who is outside it is a social question rather than a technical one.

Key points

In both Punjabs the internet arrived on a phone rather than on a computer, and almost everything about the resulting society follows from that. The handset is the bank, the newspaper, the television, the post office and the government office; a household may have several phones and no laptop; and the interface language is very often not Panjabi. That last point is the one candidates miss and examiners reward. In Indian Punjab a young person can use Panjabi in Gurmukhi throughout, because Panjabi is the official language of the state and its script is on every phone keyboard; in Pakistani Punjab the phone is far more likely to operate in Urdu or English, because Panjabi has no comparable official status there and Shahmukhi Panjabi publishing is small by comparison. The same technology therefore produces different linguistic outcomes on the two sides of the line.
Name the systems rather than gesturing at technology in general. In India, payment runs largely through the Unified Payments Interface introduced in 2016 and operated by the National Payments Corporation of India, and identity through the Aadhaar system; state services in Punjab are delivered through government service centres and online portals. In Pakistan, identity is registered with the National Database and Registration Authority, instant payment runs through Raast, launched by the State Bank of Pakistan in 2021, alongside the mobile wallet services that preceded it, and the Punjab Information Technology Board is the provincial body most often named in accounts of digital government there. Naming one of these correctly in an essay does more for an AO4 mark than three sentences about how the internet has changed everything.
Digitalisation of the LANGUAGE is its own examinable story and is a gift to a Panjabi candidate. Gurmukhi is fully encoded in Unicode, but for years Panjabi was typed in legacy eight-bit fonts such as AnmolLipi and Asees, in which the text is not really Panjabi at all but a set of Latin code points wearing a Panjabi face; the migration of newspapers, government and social media towards Unicode is what made Panjabi searchable, translatable and machine-readable. There are separate Wikipedia editions for Panjabi in Gurmukhi and for Western Panjabi in Shahmukhi, which is a small institutional fact that captures the whole script question. Panjabi-language dailies such as Ajit and Jagbani of Jalandhar and the Punjabi Tribune of Chandigarh publish online; Panjabi-language news video is abundant. Panjabi-language material in Shahmukhi is much thinner online, which is a research constraint you should state openly if you write about Pakistani Punjab.
The state can also switch it off, and this belongs in an honest answer about digital daily life. India's Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules of 2017 give the legal basis for ordering the suspension of mobile internet, and orders under them have been made in Punjab, most prominently across the state in March 2023. Present that as what it is: a dated legal fact and a dated event. Whether such suspensions are proportionate is argued in courts, in parliament and by civil-society organisations, and the argument should be reported as an argument, with the positions attributed, not resolved by you. The vocabulary: ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ ਬੰਦ ਕਰਨਾ to shut down the internet, ਹੁਕਮ (hukam) an order, ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ (surakhiā) security, ਪਾਬੰਦੀ (pābandī) a restriction, ਅਧਿਕਾਰ (adhikār) a right.

The Paper 1 reading summary, built to 95 words

A Paper 1 stimulus text describes how mobile internet has changed daily life in a Punjab village and argues that the benefits are unevenly shared. Write the summary in Panjabi, in your own words, in full sentences.

  1. 01Understand what the two marks are for

The content mark, AO2 in Paper 1, and the language mark, AO3, are awarded INDEPENDENTLY. A summary can score full content and almost no language, or the reverse. So plan for both: content points first, then a deliberate rewrite for language.

  2. 02Extract the content points as fragments

    Note them in Panjabi, not English, and not in sentences: Five points, of which the fifth carries the writer's actual argument.

  3. 03Rephrase, because lifted language cannot earn the language mark

The content mark is given regardless of whether the words are yours; the language mark is not. Same content, your wording.

  4. 04Order so the argument survives to the end

Description first, the writer's claim last. A summary whose final sentence is about video calls has buried the thesis, and the thesis is usually what the content grid is counting.

  5. 05Draft to about 95 words in full sentences

  6. 06Check the two grids separately

Content: five points present, nothing irrelevant, no opinion of your own imported - a summary is not an essay. Language: full sentences, a connective in every sentence, the compound verbs ਭੇਜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ and ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ used deliberately, and no phrase lifted whole.

  7. 07Check the length against the natural-break rule

Count. A long summary is marked only until the first natural break between 90 and 100 words, so the final sentence - the one carrying the writer's argument - must land inside that window. A candidate whose thesis sits at word 130 has written it for nobody.

Result: About 95 words, five content points, the writer's argument in the final position, every phrase rephrased. The commonest failure on a technology text is summarising the conveniences and omitting the claim about who is left out; that claim is almost always the point of the text.

Exam focus

  • The internet arrived on a phone. Every consequence in this sub-theme follows from that one fact.
  • The interface language differs across the border, and that is a language answer as well as a technology answer.
  • Name a system: UPI 2016 and Aadhaar in India; NADRA and Raast 2021 in Pakistan. One named system beats a paragraph of generalities.
  • The legacy-font to Unicode migration is the single best digitalisation example a Panjabi candidate has, and almost nobody uses it.
  • Internet suspension: the 2017 Indian rules and the March 2023 Punjab orders are dated facts; the proportionality argument is attributed, not settled.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing about the internet as a single thing that is either good or bad.
  • Assuming a Panjabi-speaking user necessarily uses a Panjabi-language interface.
  • Giving a percentage for internet penetration, smartphone ownership or data cost.
  • Treating the two Punjabs as one digital market. The payment systems, identity systems and regulators are entirely different.
  • Saying Punjabi is not written online in Pakistan. It is; there is less of it, and the reason is institutional, not technical.

ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ: ਲਾਭ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਤਰੇ#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7682 - 3.1.1.2 Sub-theme: The evolution of the digital world - Social media, benefits and dangers

Key points

The specification's own bullet is two-sided, so an answer that is one-sided has not answered it. Take the benefits seriously first, because they are specific to this language and not generic. Social media reunites a community that political geography separates: Panjabi speakers in Indian Punjab and Pakistani Punjab live under visa regimes that make ordinary visiting difficult, and for very many families the online space is the only place where the two halves of the language meet. It also carries the language itself: a speaker who cannot read Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi can still participate in Panjabi through audio and video, which has made the internet a genuine support for a spoken language with unequal institutional backing. And it lowers the cost of publication to nothing, which is why Panjabi music, poetry and comedy travel further than the institutions that ought to be carrying them.
The dangers should be named as specifically as the benefits, and the specific ones are more interesting than the generic. Misinformation, ਝੂਠੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ (jhūṭhī khabar), circulates in Panjabi in closed messaging groups where it is hard to see and harder to correct, and rumours have been implicated in real-world harm across South Asia; report that as documented and attribute assessments of scale. Online abuse and ਸਾਈਬਰ ਧੱਕੇਸ਼ਾਹੀ (sāibar dhakkeshāhī), cyberbullying, fall unequally on women, which links this bullet to research topic 3.5.1. Privacy, ਨਿੱਜਤਾ (nijjatā), is poorly understood by users who came online through a phone and never through a browser. And the display economy - the pressure to perform prosperity at weddings, on migration, on university admission - is a recurrent theme in Panjabi commentary about the young.
Three further dangers are Punjab-specific and will lift an answer. First, migration advertising: the online marketing of study-abroad and work-abroad routes is a large industry in Indian Punjab, and unregulated agents are a documented problem, which links straight to sub-theme 3.1.2.2. Second, the ordinary vulnerability of a rural user to fraud conducted in a language and a format they did not grow up with; police cyber-crime units in both Punjabs publish advice about it. Third, the interaction of social media with the events described in the political topic: mobilisation for demonstrations runs on the same platforms as rumour, which is one of the reasons governments have suspended mobile internet - a connection worth making explicitly, because it turns two separate facts into an argument.
The Panjabi you need is largely borrowed and must be spelled correctly, which is the part candidates get wrong. ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ (soshal mīḍīā), ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ (iṇṭarnaiṭṭ, with adhak), ਵੀਡੀਓ (vīḍīo), ਐਪ (aip), ਪੋਸਟ, ਲਾਈਕ, ਕਮੈਂਟ, ਖਾਤਾ (khātā) for an account, ਪਾਸਵਰਡ. The native vocabulary carries the argument: ਲਾਭ (lābh) benefit, ਨੁਕਸਾਨ (nuksān) harm, ਖ਼ਤਰਾ (khatrā) danger, ਲਤ (lat) addiction, ਭਰੋਸਾ (bharosā) trust, ਪਰਦਾ (pardā) privacy in the older sense, ਅਫ਼ਵਾਹ (afvāh) rumour, ਪਛਾਣ (pachāṇ) identity. And the balancing frames: ਜਿੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੇ … ਉੱਥੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ … where on the one hand, there on the other; and ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ, in spite of this.
Worked example

Translation from Panjabi into English, worked clause by clause

  1. 01Find every finite verb first

ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਲਿਖਦੇ ਸਨ, ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ. Five. Panjabi is verb-final, so in a long sentence the verb is the last thing you read and the first thing you should look for.

  2. 02Sentence one

ਪਿਛਲੇ ਦਸ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ … ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ - in the last ten years, social media has reached even the villages of Punjab. ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ is a compound verb: the stem plus ਜਾਣਾ gives completion, and with ਹੈ it is a present perfect. Note ਵੀ, the particle even, which is doing real work: drop it and the sentence loses its point.

  3. 03Sentence two, the relative-correlative

ਜਿਹੜੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ … ਉਹ ਹੁਣ … is the ਜਿਹੜਾ … ਉਹ … pair, the standard Panjabi relative-correlative. English cannot keep the pair, so it collapses to a single relative clause: elderly people who used to write letters now make video calls. ਲਿਖਦੇ ਸਨ is the past habitual - used to write, not wrote.

  4. 04Sentence three, the impersonal experiencer

ਕਈ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ … - literally to many families it also seems that. ਨੂੰ marks the experiencer, ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ is the impersonal verb of seeming, and English has to promote the experiencer to subject: many families also feel that. This construction is everywhere in Panjabi and translating it word for word produces nonsense.

  5. 05The final clause

ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ - young people waste a great deal of time on their phones. ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਨਾ is a conjunct verb, a noun or adjective plus ਕਰਨਾ; there are hundreds of them and they are the ordinary way Panjabi makes transitive verbs from borrowings.

  6. 06Write the English and then read it as English

In the last ten years social media has reached even the villages of Punjab. Elderly people who used to write letters now make video calls. But many families also feel that the young waste a great deal of time on their phones. Three sentences. Nothing added, nothing dropped, and the ਵੀ in the first sentence preserved as even.

  7. 07Check the four traps you were being tested on

The compound verb of completion, the past habitual, the relative-correlative pair, and the impersonal experiencer. A ten-mark translation is built out of exactly this kind of thing; the vocabulary is rarely the difficulty.

Result: In the last ten years social media has reached even the villages of Punjab. Elderly people who used to write letters now make video calls. But many families also feel that the young waste a great deal of time on their phones.

Exam focus

  • Both halves of the bullet, always. A one-sided answer is an incomplete answer by construction.
  • The strongest benefit argument is specific to Panjabi: the online space is where a language divided by a border meets.
  • Link the dangers outward - to migration agents (3.1.2.2), to online abuse of women (3.5.1), to internet suspension (3.2.2.1).
  • Spell the borrowings correctly. ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ takes an adhak; ਖ਼ਤਰਾ takes a nukta on the kha.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing a generic essay about social media that could have been written about any country.
  • Giving user numbers, growth rates or a proportion of young people affected by anything.
  • Asserting that misinformation caused a specific event. State that rumour has been implicated in documented harm and attribute the assessment.
  • Naming a platform and calling that an example; the example is what people do on it.
  • Forgetting that the same platform carries the benefit and the danger, which is exactly what makes the bullet an argument.
