This topic is sub-theme 3.2.1.1 of AQA 7682, Festivals and traditions, inside theme 3.2.1, Artistic culture in the Panjabi-speaking world past and present. Its three bullet aspects are roots and origins, social and economic impact, and regional and local heritage, and each of the five sections below states which it serves. The platform's topic id is artistic-culture-1. Two things make this the most rewarding thematic topic in the specification and also the easiest to write badly. The first is that the Panjabi festive year is genuinely multiple: it runs on an old lunisolar agricultural reckoning with its own month names, on the Islamic lunar calendar for the Muslim population of the Punjab, and on Sikh and Hindu ritual reckonings that have themselves been reformed and disputed within living memory - so the same twelve months carry several different kinds of occasion for several different communities in two different countries. The second is that festivals invite description, and description alone earns very little. The exam technique this topic carries is the AO4 ladder: the deliberate climb from describing a festival to making a cultural claim that the evidence you actually have will support.

basic level

In the first year, learn the calendar: the twelve desi months, the seasons they belong to, and where the main occasions sit in them. Then learn to describe ONE festival completely in Panjabi - what happens, who does it, what is eaten, what is worn, what is said - because a full description of one is worth more than a thin gesture at ten. Follow a Panjabi news site through a festival season and collect the words it uses.

higher level

The full A-Level expects you to explain rather than describe: why a festival takes the form it does, what its economics are, who is included and excluded, and how it has changed. It also expects you to separate the standard account of an origin from the evidence for it, because the origins of several Panjabi traditions are argued about, and a confident sentence is not the same as a true one. Learn which occasions are marked on which side of the border and by whom, and never generalise across both.

ਦੇਸੀ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਤੇ ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ: the calendars the festivals hang on#

●○○FoundationLPAQA 7682 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Festivals and traditions - Roots and origins

Key points

Almost every Panjabi festival is dated by a calendar that is not the Gregorian one, so learning the months is not decoration but the prerequisite for the whole sub-theme. The traditional Panjabi reckoning uses the Bikrami era and its twelve desi months: The first day of each month is the ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ (saṅgrāṅd), announced in gurdwaras and still marked in villages on both sides of the border, and several major occasions are simply the sangrand of a particular month. The agricultural year runs against these names, not against January and February, which is why a Panjabi harvest song names ਵੈਸਾਖ and a Panjabi monsoon song names ਸਾਉਣ, and why the months survive in ordinary rural speech in Pakistani Punjab even though the state calendar there is Islamic and Gregorian.
Sikh commemorations have their own reckoning and its history is a live dispute rather than a settled fact, which makes it excellent examinable material if you handle it honestly. A solar calendar for Sikh anniversaries, known as the Nanakshahi calendar, was adopted at the end of the 1990s in order to fix gurpurab dates against the Common Era year instead of letting them drift with the lunar cycle; it was subsequently amended, and the amendments were and remain contested between institutions, so that certain anniversaries can be observed on different dates in different years and different places. Report that as what it is: a documented reform, a documented dispute, and no verdict from you. Note the practical consequence for a candidate - the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak is generally observed in ਕੱਤਕ, which falls in the Gregorian November, and is dated by the lunar full moon rather than by a fixed day.
For the Muslim population of the Punjab the governing calendar is the Islamic lunar one, and the consequence is structural rather than trivial. Because a lunar year is shorter than a solar one, ਰਮਜ਼ਾਨ and the two Eids move backwards through the seasons by roughly eleven days a year, so they are sometimes harvest-time occasions and sometimes midwinter ones; a fixed agricultural festival like ਵਿਸਾਖੀ, by contrast, is anchored to the sun and stays where it is. - demonstrates that you understand the machinery and not merely the list.
The vocabulary of the calendar is worth learning as a block because it recurs in reading texts, in song and in the dating of documents: ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ the first of the month; ਮੱਸਿਆ the new moon and ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ the full moon, both of which are themselves observance days; ਰੁੱਤ (rutt) season; ਸਾਉਣੀ (sāuṇī) the monsoon-sown crop and ਹਾੜ੍ਹੀ (hāṛhī) the winter-sown crop harvested in spring - two words that tie the calendar directly to the harvest festivals; ਵਰ੍ਹਾ or ਸਾਲ year; ਤਿਉਹਾਰ (tiuhār) festival; ਮੇਲਾ (melā) fair; ਜੋੜ ਮੇਲਾ (joṛ melā) a large gathering-fair. Dates in a Panjabi sentence take Gurmukhi digits: ੧੩ ਅਪਰੈਲ ੧੯੧੯, and never a Western digit welded to a Panjabi word.

Climbing the AO4 ladder: from description to a claim you can support

You have written the sentence Climb from there to a sentence that would earn credit on the AO4 grid, one rung at a time.

  1. 01Rung one: description

Many festivals are celebrated in Punjab. True, unfalsifiable and worth nothing: it could have been written by someone who had never opened a book on the subject.

  2. 02Rung two: specific description

Now four named occasions with their positions in two calendars. Still description, but description an examiner can see is informed.

  3. 03Rung three: a pattern

It is worth noticing that these festivals run on not one but three different reckonings. This is a claim: it can be checked and it could be wrong.

  4. 04Rung four: a consequence

So Eid moves each year while Vaisakhi arrives with the harvest, and that difference determines markets, holidays and farm work. Now the claim is doing work.

  5. 05Rung five: an evaluation with a limit

In my view this multi-calendar structure is the defining feature of Panjabi festive life, though that does not mean every community observes every festival equally. A judgement, marked as a judgement, with its own limit stated.

  6. 06Notice what changed

Nothing was added that a well-read student would not know. The ladder is not about knowing more; it is about doing something with what you know - naming, patterning, consequence, judgement, limit. The AO4 descriptors ask for relevant information selected to support arguments and for evidence used to justify conclusions, and rungs three to five are exactly that.

Result: The finished pair: Practise the ladder on every festival you learn: name, pattern, consequence, judgement, limit.

Exam focus

  • Learn the twelve desi months in order. A stimulus text will use them without explanation.
  • ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ, ਮੱਸਿਆ and ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ are dates, not decorations, and several festivals are simply one of them.
  • The Nanakshahi calendar reform is documented and its amendments are disputed. Report the dispute; do not resolve it.
  • The lunar Eids move and the solar Vaisakhi does not. One sentence on that shows you understand the machinery.
  • ਹਾੜ੍ਹੀ and ਸਾਉਣੀ link the calendar to the harvest festivals and are cheap, precise marks.

Typical mistakes

  • Giving festival dates only in Gregorian terms, which makes the lunar occasions look fixed when they are not.
  • Presenting the Nanakshahi calendar as uncontroversial, or as a failure. It is neither; it is disputed.
  • Assuming the desi months are used only in Indian Punjab; they survive in rural speech across the border too.
  • Mixing Gurmukhi and Western digits inside one Panjabi date.
  • Treating ਮੇਲਾ and ਤਿਉਹਾਰ as synonyms; a mela is an event in a place, a tiuhar is a day in a calendar.

Fig. 1Occasions are listed with the community and the place that hold them and with one usable Panjabi sentence each, because a festival you cannot describe in a sentence is not yet knowledge you can be examined on. The row set in heavier ink is the one occasion in the year that carries three separate significances at once - a harvest, a founding and a colonial-era killing.

Key points

ਵਿਸਾਖੀ is the occasion to know best, because three quite different things sit on the same mid-April day and a candidate who separates them is immediately visible. It is first an agricultural festival marking the ripening and cutting of the ਹਾੜ੍ਹੀ wheat crop, observed across the whole historic Punjab regardless of religion. It is second the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur in 1699, which makes it the central date of the Sikh year and the reason for the great gatherings at Anandpur Sahib and at Talwandi Sabo. And it is third the date, 13 April 1919, of the killing of a crowd at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, an event of the colonial period commemorated at a site that is now a national memorial. Naming all three, with the dates, is the single most efficient paragraph in this whole sub-theme.
ਲੋਹੜੀ falls in the depth of winter, on the eve of the sangrand of ਮਾਘ, and its material culture is easy to describe precisely: the ਧੂਣੀ or bonfire, the offerings of ਤਿਲ sesame, ਗੁੜ jaggery, ਰਿਓੜੀਆਂ and ਮੂੰਗਫਲੀ thrown into it, the songs sung by children going door to door, and the association with the folk figure Dulla Bhatti. Historically Lohri was celebrated with particular emphasis for the birth of a son, and the deliberate modern practice of holding Lohri for daughters, promoted by families, schools and campaigners in Indian Punjab, is a documented change and a direct, elegant link to research topic 3.5.1. The following day, ਮਾਘੀ, is the sangrand itself and carries a large fair at Sri Muktsar Sahib, associated in Sikh tradition with the forty who died there in the time of Guru Gobind Singh.
ਬਸੰਤ ਪੰਚਮੀ marks the turn towards spring, is associated with the colour yellow and with mustard flowering, and is historically inseparable from Lahore, where the kite-flying that accompanied it was on a scale that made the festival famous. Kite-flying in Pakistani Punjab was restricted by the provincial authorities on public-safety grounds in the mid-2000s after deaths caused by metal-coated and glass-coated string, and the position has been revisited more than once since; check the current position from current sources before writing about it as though it were settled. ਤੀਆਂ, in the monsoon month of ਸਾਉਣ, is the women's festival of swings, ਗਿੱਧਾ and ਬੋਲੀਆਂ, at which married daughters traditionally return to their parents village - which is why so much Panjabi women's song is about ਪੇਕੇ, the parental home, and ਸਹੁਰੇ, the marital one.
The Panjabi you need here is concrete and describable, which is exactly what the AO4 grid means by relevant information. ਵਾਢੀ (vāḍhī) the harvest; ਕਣਕ (kaṇak) wheat and ਸਰ੍ਹੋਂ (sarhoṅ) mustard; ਧੂਣੀ (dhūṇī) bonfire; ਪਤੰਗ (patang) kite and ਡੋਰ (ḍor) the string; ਪੀਂਘ (pīṅgh) swing; ਢੋਲ (ḍhol) the drum; ਭੰਗੜਾ and ਗਿੱਧਾ the men's and women's dances; ਬੋਲੀ (bolī) the sung couplet; ਮੇਲਾ ਲੱਗਣਾ for a fair to be held; ਜਲੂਸ or ਨਗਰ ਕੀਰਤਨ for a procession. The passive is the natural voice for describing custom - ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਧੂਣੀ ਬਾਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। - and section 3.3.6 names the passive with ਜਾਣਾ explicitly, so using it is both natural and creditable.
Worked example

A summary built from a cultural stimulus text

A Paper 1 stimulus text describes how Lohri is observed in a Punjab town and argues that the festival has become both more commercial and more inclusive over three decades. Write the summary in Panjabi, about 95 words.

  1. 01Separate the descriptive content from the argumentative content

A cultural text usually contains both, and the summary question rewards the argument. Note the content points as fragments: Five points, of which the last three carry the text's actual claim.

  2. 02Rephrase into your own words

    Lifted language cannot earn the AO3 mark, so ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਵਧਿਆ becomes ਵਪਾਰਕ ਪੱਖ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, and ਧੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਲੋਹੜੀ becomes ਹੁਣ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਉੱਤੇ ਵੀ. The content is preserved; the wording is yours.

  3. 03Order the points so the argument survives

Description first, claim last, so that the final sentence of the summary carries the text's thesis. A summary whose last sentence is about sweets has buried the argument, and the argument is usually what the content grid is counting.

  4. 04Draft to about 95 words in full sentences

  5. 05Check the two grids separately

Content: all five points present, nothing irrelevant added, no opinion of your own imported - a summary is not an essay. Language: full sentences, varied connectives, the passive ਬਾਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ used correctly with feminine agreement, and no phrase lifted whole from the stimulus.

  6. 06Check the length

Count the words. If the draft runs past 100 the marking stops at the first natural break after 90, so the final sentence carrying the thesis must land inside that window - otherwise the best sentence in the answer is never read.

Result: About 95 words, five content points, the text's argument in the final position, and every phrase rephrased. The single commonest error on cultural texts is summarising the description and omitting the claim.

Exam focus

  • Vaisakhi carries three separate significances - harvest, the Khalsa of 1699, and 13 April 1919. Separate them and date them.
  • Lohri for daughters is a documented modern change and the cleanest link from this sub-theme to research topic 3.5.1.
  • On kite-flying restrictions in Pakistani Punjab: the mid-2000s safety measures are documented; the current position must be checked.
  • The passive with ਜਾਣਾ is the natural voice for describing custom and is named in section 3.3.6.
  • One festival described completely beats five festivals mentioned.

Typical mistakes

  • Describing Vaisakhi as only a Sikh festival or only a harvest festival.
  • Writing that kite-flying is banned, or is not, without checking the current position.
  • Calling Lohri a Sikh festival or a Hindu festival; it is a seasonal one observed across communities.
  • Using ਗਿੱਧਾ and ਭੰਗੜਾ interchangeably. They are different dances performed by different people.
  • Describing a festival with adjectives instead of with what is done, eaten, worn and sung.

Key points

The religious calendar of the Panjabi-speaking world is not one calendar but several running at once, and an answer that treats it as one has failed the bullet. ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ, the anniversaries of the Sikh Gurus, are marked with ਅਖੰਡ ਪਾਠ, the continuous reading of the scripture, with ਨਗਰ ਕੀਰਤਨ, the processions that move through a town behind the scripture, and with ਲੰਗਰ; the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in ਕੱਤਕ and the martyrdom anniversaries of Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadur are the ones most often named in reading texts. ਹੋਲਾ ਮਹੱਲਾ, held at Anandpur Sahib the day after Holi, is by tradition instituted by Guru Gobind Singh as a martial gathering and is still marked by displays of horsemanship and arms by Nihang orders. And ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਦਿਵਸ, observed at the same time as Diwali and centred on the illumination of the Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar, is a Sikh commemoration sharing a date with a festival of another tradition - which is itself a good example of how the calendars interlock.
For the Muslim majority of the historic Punjab the principal occasions are ਰਮਜ਼ਾਨ and the two Eids, ਈਦ-ਉਲ-ਫ਼ਿਤਰ at the end of the fasting month and ਈਦ-ਉਲ-ਅਜ਼ਹਾ, the festival of sacrifice; both are public occasions in Pakistan and are marked by Panjabi Muslim communities in India and in the diaspora. Alongside them stands a distinctively Panjabi institution: the ਉਰਸ, the annual commemoration at the shrine of a Sufi, which functions as a religious observance and as a fair at once. The urs at the shrine of Baba Farid at Pakpattan, the annual gathering at Data Darbar in Lahore, the observance at the shrine of Bulleh Shah at Kasur and the Mela Chiraghan or festival of lamps associated with Shah Hussain at Lahore are documented, dated and locatable, and they matter to a Panjabi candidate for a further reason: the verses of Baba Farid are contained in the Guru Granth Sahib, so the same poet belongs to two traditions at once.
Two smaller communities belong in a complete answer. Panjabi Hindus observe the wider festival calendar of northern India, and several occasions - Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Navratri - are marked across community lines in ways that are documented and that vary sharply by town and by family. Panjabi Christians, a community concentrated in Pakistani Punjab and present in Indian Punjab too, observe ਵੱਡਾ ਦਿਨ, Christmas, and Easter; Panjabi-language Christian hymnody exists and is sung. Naming these accurately, without inflating or minimising, is exactly what the tolerance and respect bullet in the previous topic and the regional heritage bullet here both reward.
The vocabulary is specialised and worth learning as sets rather than as isolated words. Muslim observance: ਮਸਜਿਦ, ਨਮਾਜ਼ prayer, ਰੋਜ਼ਾ the fast, ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ sacrifice, ਈਦੀ the gift given at Eid, ਦਰਗਾਹ shrine, ਕੱਵਾਲੀ. Shared: ਸ਼ਰਧਾ devotion, ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ devotee, ਜ਼ਿਆਰਤ pilgrimage-visit, ਯਾਤਰਾ pilgrimage, ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸਥਾਨ place of worship, ਸ਼ਰਧਾਂਜਲੀ homage. The safest sentence frame for describing an observance you have not attended is the impersonal passive: - on this occasion langar is served.
Worked example

Answering a listening question about an unfamiliar observance

A Paper 3 listening passage has a speaker from Pakpattan describing the urs at the shrine of Baba Farid, and a second speaker asking questions. Work out how to hear the answer.

  1. 01Predict the shape before you listen

The question is ਕਿਉਂ, why. So the answer is a reason, not a description, and it will be introduced by a connective: ਕਿਉਂਕਿ, ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ or ਦਰਅਸਲ. Deciding this before the recording starts halves the work.

  2. 02Identify who is who

Two speakers, one local and one asking. The opinion belongs to ਬੁਲਾਰਾ, the speaker describing. With two-speaker passages the commonest error is answering with the interviewer's view, and the specification guarantees that at least one passage will have more than one speaker.

  3. 03Use pass one for the shape of the passage

You have individual control of the recording, so the first pass is not for details. Map it: who speaks when, and roughly where the answer to each question lives. Write nothing but timings and topic words.

  4. 04Use pass two to find the connective

Return only to the part that concerns religion and attendance, and listen for the causal word. Around it will be a phrase about the poet, about verses being shared, or about the shrine being open. Do not write yet.

  5. 05Use pass three to fix the wording

Now catch the exact terms - ਸਾਂਝਾ, ਸ਼ਰਧਾ, ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ, ਸਭ ਲਈ - so that your written answer uses the passage's own content accurately. The content mark is given for the information, not for elegance.

  6. 06Write only the reason, attributed

According to the speaker, people come because the shrine is open to everyone and because several communities regard Baba Farid's verse as their own.

  7. 07Check that you added nothing

You know that Baba Farid's verses appear in the Sikh scripture. If the speaker did not say so, it does not go in this answer. In the summary question that knowledge would be irrelevant material; in the multi-skill task or an essay it would be gold. Knowing where a fact belongs is a skill in itself.

The method - predict the answer type, identify the speakers, map, locate the connective, fix the wording, attribute - is what individual control of the recording is for.

Exam focus

  • Name the tradition an occasion belongs to, and note where two traditions share a date.
  • The urs is a distinctively Panjabi institution and is religious observance and fair at once.
  • Baba Farid belongs to two traditions at once - a Sufi whose verses are in the Sikh scripture. One sentence, enormous analytical value.
  • Panjabi Christians and Panjabi Hindus belong in a complete answer to the regional heritage bullet.
  • The impersonal passive is the register for describing an observance.

Typical mistakes

  • Treating the Panjabi religious calendar as belonging to a single community.
  • Confusing the two Eids, or treating Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali as the same commemoration.
  • Writing about shrine culture in Pakistani Punjab as though it were a curiosity rather than a mass practice.
  • Using ਤਿਉਹਾਰ for a solemn commemoration; ਮਨਾਉਣਾ is for celebration, and a martyrdom anniversary is ਮਨਾਇਆ only in the loosest speech.
  • Naming a festival without naming where it is chiefly held.

●●○StandardLPAQA 7682 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Festivals and traditions - Regional and local heritage

Key points

Regional heritage in the Panjabi-speaking world means at least four different things, and separating them is the analytical move this bullet rewards. First, between the two Punjabs: the same seasonal occasion is observed differently in Ludhiana and in Lahore, and some occasions exist on only one side. Second, within each: the Majha country around Amritsar, the Doaba between the rivers, the Malwa to the south of the Sutlej, the Puadh, and across the border the central plain, the Pothohar plateau and the Saraiki-speaking south all have their own fairs, foods and speech. Third, the peoples who live in the Punjab but are not Panjabi speakers - labour migrants from eastern India in the Indian state, Saraiki and Pahari speakers, and long-settled minority communities. Fourth, the diaspora, where Panjabi festivals are held in Southall, Birmingham, Vancouver and Milan in forms that have adapted to a different climate, calendar and legal environment. An answer that never leaves one district has not answered this bullet.
Name specific fairs with their places, because a mela is defined by where it is. The rural sports meeting at Kila Raipur in Ludhiana district has been held since the 1930s and is known for bullock-cart and other rural contests; the Chhapar mela and the Roshni mela at Jagraon are established local gatherings in Indian Punjab; the Jor Mela at Fatehgarh Sahib and the great gathering at Anandpur Sahib mark Sikh commemorations. Across the border, the Mela Chiraghan at Lahore and the urs gatherings named earlier are the equivalent institutions, and Lahore has also hosted a municipal spring festival. Every one of these is checkable, and naming one with its district is worth more than a paragraph about how Panjabis love to celebrate.
Local heritage also means craft and material culture, and this is where a good candidate finds evidence nobody else uses. ਫੁਲਕਾਰੀ embroidery, ਦਰੀ weaving, ਜੁੱਤੀ making, ਪਿੱਤਲ ਦੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ brassware, ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ and ਮੰਜਾ weaving, and the ਢੋਲ, ਤੂੰਬੀ, ਅਲਗੋਜ਼ੇ, ਚਿਮਟਾ and ਸਾਰੰਗੀ of folk music are all locatable, describable and dateable in their history. Several of these are the subject of geographical-indication registration in India and of craft-revival programmes on both sides of the border - which is a documented institutional fact rather than a nostalgic one, and the kind of thing an AO4 grid means by relevant information selected to support arguments.
The Panjabi of place and locality needs to be precise: The structure that does comparative work is the relative-correlative pair used spatially: - where in Malwa the sports fairs are large, in Majha the religious gatherings are. Section 3.3.8 names the subordinators this depends on.
Worked example

Turning a craft into an argument about heritage

You know that phulkari is an embroidery tradition of the Punjab, and that it is now sold as a fashion item. Build a paragraph that treats that as evidence rather than as a fact.

  1. 01Describe the object precisely

- phulkari is an embroidery art in which flowers are worked on a shawl with silk thread. Precision first: an examiner cannot credit a claim about something you have not shown you can describe.

  2. 02Give it a social location

- formerly it was prepared at home by women for their daughters weddings. The past habitual passive, ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ, is doing the historical work.

  3. 03State the change

- now it is sold in the market and exported. Two clauses, one contrast, no adjectives.

  4. 04Ask the question the change raises

- the question is what meaning remains when a thing moves from the home to the market. Posing the question explicitly is a legitimate and very effective essay move.

  5. 05Answer it on both sides

- on one side artisans earn and the art survives; on the other, work that was once part of a relationship becomes a transaction.

  6. 06Close with the limited judgement

- in my view both are true, and that is heritage's central dilemma. Notice that the paragraph contains no number, no invented history and no sentimentality, and that it would work equally well on jutti, on dari weaving or on bhangra.

Result: A six-sentence paragraph that moves from description to social location to change to question to two-sided answer to limited judgement. The same shape transfers to any craft, any food and any dance in this sub-theme.

Exam focus

  • Four kinds of regional difference: between the Punjabs, within each, beyond the Panjabi-speaking population, and in the diaspora.
  • Name a mela with its district. Kila Raipur since the 1930s is the easiest precise example.
  • Craft traditions and their geographical-indication registration are documented evidence almost nobody uses.
ਉੱਥੇ … is the natural Panjabi structure for a regional comparison.

Typical mistakes

  • Answering the regional bullet entirely from one district, or entirely from one country.
  • Treating Saraiki-speaking or Pahari-speaking communities as simply Panjabi.
  • Describing regional variation as quaint or backward, which reads badly and is not analysis.
  • Naming a fair without naming where it is held.
  • Forgetting the diaspora, whose festivals are part of Panjabi regional heritage now.

ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਤੇ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਅਸਰ: what festivals do, and what they cost#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7682 - 3.2.1.1 Sub-theme: Festivals and traditions - Social and economic impact

Key points

The economic case for festivals in the Punjab is real and can be made entirely without invented figures if you argue in mechanisms rather than magnitudes. Four mechanisms carry it. First, the artisan and performer economy: ਢੋਲੀ drummers, marriage bands, ਹਲਵਾਈ confectioners, tent and lighting contractors, tailors, embroiderers and priests earn a large share of an annual income in a few concentrated weeks, which means a bad season is a household crisis rather than an inconvenience. Second, the retail cycle: cloth, gold, footwear and food purchasing concentrates so heavily around the festival and wedding seasons that the trading year in both Punjabs is shaped by it. Third, transport and hospitality, including the documented pattern of diaspora families timing visits to the Punjab for weddings and festivals. Fourth, the media economy: festival broadcasting, advertising and music releases are scheduled around the same dates.
The social functions are as arguable as the economic ones and should be argued rather than asserted. Festivals redistribute, through the obligatory giving that attaches to them - ਲੰਗਰ, the ਦਾਨ and ਖ਼ੈਰਾਤ of the various traditions, the ਜ਼ਕਾਤ and ਫ਼ਿਤਰਾ associated with Ramzan and Eid - and researchers of both societies have written about that redistribution as a real if partial safety net. They organise local life: a gurdwara committee, a mosque committee or a mela committee is a durable institution that does other work between festivals. Historically the mela was also the occasion on which villages met, matches were made and disputes were settled, which is why so much folk narrative is set at one. And they mark identity, which is where the argument sharpens: the same occasion can be experienced as a shared regional celebration and as an assertion of one community's presence, and both readings are made publicly on both sides of the border. Name both; attribute both.
The costs belong in a balanced answer and are equally documented. Festival and wedding expenditure falls hardest on households with least, and the social obligation to spend is real; commentators in both Punjabs write about it every year, and the connection to dowry practice is made explicitly in that commentary. Environmental costs are documented and regulated: restrictions on firecrackers have been imposed and litigated in India, and the safety measures around kite string in Pakistani Punjab described earlier are of the same kind. Road-safety concerns around festival travel and alcohol are raised annually by police in Indian Punjab. And there is the argument about commercialisation - that sponsorship, competition and broadcast have displaced the communal content of the occasion - which is made by some participants and rejected by others, and which makes a genuinely good essay question because both sides can be evidenced.
The structures that make this bullet writable are the ones that hold two things together. ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ … for the balance. - a festival is not merely a religious occasion but a large economic event as well. - the more display increases, the more the burden on poor families increases. And the honest closing frame ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ …, taking everything into account it can be said that, which lets you close with a judgement without claiming to have settled anything.
Worked example

A research-project style answer built on a festival question

Suppose your research topic were 3.5.3, Tourism in the Punjab, and the unseen Paper 1 source were about visitors travelling to Anandpur Sahib for Hola Mohalla. The unseen question asks whether festivals are a sound basis for a tourist economy. Plan the 300-word answer.

  1. 01Read the mark structure before you plan

The research-project question carries 40 marks and is answered in about 300 words. It asks you to use information from the source together with the knowledge gained from your own individual research, to produce an evaluative response. So the source is a starting point, not the material; the marks for your own research are what separate this from a comprehension exercise.

  2. 02Take two points from the source and mark them as such

ਸਰੋਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ …, according to the source, signals plainly that you are using it. Two points is enough; the source is not the essay, and paraphrasing it at length is the commonest way to waste this question.

  3. 03Bring three things the source did not have

This is where the research marks live. For example: that the same site holds an enormous gathering on a fixed religious date and therefore cannot be scheduled to suit an industry; that the infrastructure serving it - langar, volunteer accommodation, local transport - is a religious institution rather than a commercial one; and that a heritage site in a border region depends on visa and travel regimes outside anyone's control. Each is checkable, each is structural, and none needs a statistic.

  4. 04Structure the argument, not the topic

Four moves: festivals concentrate visitors into a short window, which is revenue for some and pressure on infrastructure for all; a religious calendar cannot be rescheduled for a tourism board; recognition raises visibility but also raises expectations of preservation; and the people who make the festival are usually not the people who capture the visitor spending. Each move contains its own counter-argument.

  5. 05Write the evaluation as a judgement with a reason

- on the basis of my research it seems to me that. This is exactly what the AO4 descriptors ask for: evidence used to justify a conclusion, rather than a conclusion announced.

  6. 06Budget the 300 words and the clock

About 40 words framing the question, 60 on the source, 140 on your own evidence, 60 on evaluation and conclusion. Everything you write is marked and there is no word limit, but Paper 1 is 2 h 30 for reading, translation and this essay together; a candidate who writes 500 words here has taken the time from the other 45 marks.

Result: A plan in which the source occupies a fifth of the answer and the candidate's own research occupies half. The commonest failure in this task is an essay that paraphrases the provided source at length; it can score respectably for understanding the source and can barely score at all for the research the question exists to test.

Exam focus

  • Argue in mechanisms - artisans, retail, transport, media - not in magnitudes you do not have.
ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ … is the single most useful frame in this bullet.
  • Environmental and safety regulation of festivals is documented, dated and almost never mentioned by candidates.
  • The commercialisation argument has two evidenced sides; that makes it a good question and a bad place to take a side without attribution.
  • The historic function of the mela as meeting place and marriage market explains why it appears so often in folk narrative.

Typical mistakes

  • Claiming a value for the festival economy or a number of visitors.
  • Writing about social benefit with no mention of who pays.
  • Presenting commercialisation as self-evidently bad.
  • Ignoring the environmental and safety dimension, which is both documented and regulated.
  • Concluding with a restatement instead of a judgement.
