Appraising is the written examination at the heart of A-Level Music: a test of the ear, the analytical mind and contextual understanding. It rests on a single shared language - the elements of music - through which any piece can be described, dissected and compared. This topic teaches that vocabulary, then the three exam disciplines built on it: aural perception of unfamiliar and set-work extracts, close analysis with a score, and the extended comparative essay.

Key points

Component 1, Appraising, is the only written examination in A-Level Music, and it carries 40% of the qualification. It is a paper of two hours and thirty minutes, marked out of 120, sat at the end of the course as the terminal exam. During the paper, recorded extracts of music are played to candidates through the exam-room system, so this is a listening exam as much as a writing one: you must hear accurately, then convert what you hear into precise musical language on the page. The other 60% of the A-level is the two non-exam assessments - Performance and Composition - so Appraising is where a candidate proves themselves as an analytical, informed listener rather than as a performer or composer.
The paper is normally organised into three sections that test three different skills. Section A is Listening: you hear extracts - both unfamiliar music and passages from the studied set works - and answer short and medium questions that ask you to identify and describe elements you can hear, such as the metre, the tonality, a cadence, an instrument, a texture or a compositional device. Section B is Analysis: it focuses on the compulsory Area of Study 1 set works and is answered with the help of a printed score or a skeleton score, so the questions probe your ability to read notation and pinpoint features precisely, bar by bar. Section C is Essay: you write two extended essays, one rooted in Area of Study 1 and one that compares or connects music, often across an area of study, drawing together knowledge, analysis and evaluation into continuous prose.
The marks are weighted to reward the harder skills. Listening (Section A) carries the largest share of the marks - of the order of 56 - because accurate aural perception underpins everything. Analysis (Section B) is worth around 34 marks and rewards the close, score-based detail that separates strong candidates. The Essay section (Section C) is worth around 30 marks and rewards the ability to construct an argument about music, using analytical evidence and context, in fluent writing. Knowing roughly how the marks fall helps you budget your time in the exam: the biggest section deserves careful listening, but the essays need enough time to plan and write coherently.
The content examined in all three sections is organised into areas of study. Area of Study 1, the Western classical tradition 1650-1910, is compulsory and is the sole focus of the score-based Analysis section and one of the two essays. Candidates then choose two further areas from the six optional strands, and those choices supply the additional listening material and the comparative essay. This means every candidate's exam is partly shared (the compulsory classical content) and partly personal (their two optional areas), so your revision must be deep on Area of Study 1 and secure across your two chosen options.
Success in Appraising is built on one foundation: a precise command of the elements of music, the shared vocabulary through which every question is answered. Whether you are naming a texture in a Baroque concerto, spotting a modulation in a Chopin nocturne, or comparing the use of rhythm in jazz and pop, you are deploying the same analytical language. The next section sets out that language in full; the sections after it show how to apply it in each of the three exam disciplines. Master the elements, and the whole paper becomes a matter of listening carefully and describing accurately what you hear.
Worked example

Reading an exam question for what it demands

A listening question says: 'Describe the texture and tonality of this extract (4 marks).' How should you approach it?

  1. 01Identify the elements asked for

    The question names two elements - texture and tonality - so the answer must address both, not just describe the music generally.

  2. 02Listen for texture

    Decide whether the extract is monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic or heterophonic, and note any change, e.g. 'begins homophonic, then a countermelody makes it polyphonic'.

  3. 03Listen for tonality

    Decide major or minor, and whether it stays in one key or modulates; listen for a clear cadence or a shift of tonal centre.

  4. 04Match detail to the marks

    Four marks usually rewards two secure points per element, so give a precise term plus a brief justification for each - 'homophonic (melody and chordal accompaniment)', 'minor key, modulating to the relative major'.

Result: The answer is planned by decoding the elements the question names, listening specifically for each, and supplying enough justified detail to match the marks - the core habit of every Appraising response.

Key points

The elements of music are the fundamental dimensions from which all music is built, and they are the analytical vocabulary that every listening, analysis and essay answer uses. They are usually listed as pitch and melody, rhythm (with metre and tempo), dynamics, timbre and sonority, texture, structure (form), and harmony and tonality. Some schemes add articulation, tempo and silence as separate headings, but the essential idea is the same: any piece of music, in any style, can be described completely by explaining what is happening in each of these dimensions. Learning to name and analyse the elements is therefore the single most important foundation of appraising, exactly as the formal elements are for visual analysis.
Pitch, melody and harmony together form the tonal dimension. Pitch is how high or low a note sounds; melody is a succession of pitches forming a recognisable line or tune, described through its contour (the shape - rising, falling, arch, wave), its intervals (steps or leaps, conjunct or disjunct motion), its range, and devices such as sequence (a phrase repeated at a higher or lower pitch), imitation and ornamentation. Harmony is the simultaneous sounding of pitches - chords - and how they progress; it is described through its consonance or dissonance, its chords (triads, sevenths, extended chords), its cadences (the standard phrase-endings: perfect, imperfect, plagal, interrupted), and its language (diatonic, chromatic, modal). Tonality is the sense of a home key - major, minor, modal or atonal - and the way music moves between keys through modulation.
Rhythm, metre and tempo form the temporal dimension - music's organisation in time. Rhythm is the pattern of durations (long and short notes); metre is the underlying pulse grouped into regular beats, felt as duple, triple or quadruple, simple or compound, and notated by a time signature; tempo is the speed, described by Italian terms (adagio, andante, allegro, presto) or by a metronome mark, and it can change through accelerando (speeding up) or ritardando (slowing down). Rhythmic devices worth naming include syncopation (accents off the beat), dotted rhythms, triplets, hemiola, cross-rhythm, augmentation and diminution (lengthening or shortening durations), and the use of rubato (flexible, expressive timing). Rhythm is often the quickest element to identify by ear and a reliable early foothold in a listening question.
Dynamics, timbre, sonority and texture describe the sound itself and how its lines combine. Dynamics are the levels and changes of loudness (pianissimo to fortissimo, crescendo and diminuendo, sforzando, terraced dynamics). Timbre (tone colour) is the characteristic sound-quality that lets you tell a flute from a trumpet or a distorted guitar from a clean one, and sonority is the overall sound-world created by the combination of instruments and their playing techniques (pizzicato, con sordino, palm-muting). Texture is how many musical lines there are and how they relate: monophonic (a single unaccompanied line), homophonic (a melody with chordal accompaniment), polyphonic or contrapuntal (several independent melodic lines woven together, as in a fugue), and heterophonic (simultaneous varied versions of one melody, common in traditional musics). Texture is one of the most frequently examined elements and one of the most revealing.
Structure (or form) is the large-scale organisation of a piece - how its sections are ordered and related over time. The standard forms are worth knowing by name and shape: binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA), theme and variations, sonata form (exposition-development-recapitulation), ritornello form (recurring tutti alternating with solo episodes) in the Baroque concerto, strophic form (repeated verses) in song, and verse-chorus form in pop. Structure is created and articulated by the other elements - a change of key, texture, dynamic or theme signals a new section - so analysing structure means tracking how the whole ensemble of elements shifts across a piece. Because these elements interlock, a strong analysis never treats them in isolation: it explains how, say, a change of texture and a modulation together mark the start of a development section.
Worked example

Describing a passage element by element

Show how to build a full description of a short orchestral passage using the elements.

  1. 01Start with the temporal elements

    Fix the metre and tempo first - 'a moderate quadruple metre (4/4), allegro' - because they are usually the easiest to hear and anchor everything else.

  2. 02Add the tonal elements

    State the tonality and any harmonic feature - 'major key, largely diatonic, ending with a perfect cadence' - and describe the melody's contour and any sequence.

  3. 03Describe the sound and texture

    Name the instrumentation and sonority and the texture - 'strings and woodwind, homophonic, with the melody in the violins over a chordal accompaniment' - noting dynamics such as a crescendo.

  4. 04Locate it in the structure

    Say where the passage sits - 'this is the opening theme, later restated, suggesting a ternary or rondo design' - so the description reaches from detail to whole.

Result: A complete description moves systematically through the elements - temporal, then tonal, then sonic and textural, then structural - so nothing is missed and each observation uses the correct technical term.

  • Deploy the correct term for every element accurately - name a cadence, a texture, a metre, a device - rather than describing music vaguely.
  • Analyse how the elements interact (e.g. how texture, dynamics and tonality together articulate structure), not just list them separately.

  • Confusing elements - describing pitch when the question asks about tonality, or calling a homophonic texture 'polyphonic' because more than one instrument plays.

Key points

Section A tests aural perception: the ability to hear a feature and name it accurately. Extracts are played several times, and the questions mix unfamiliar music (which you have never studied) with passages from the set works. Because you cannot rely on prior knowledge for the unfamiliar extracts, this section rewards a trained ear and a systematic listening routine rather than memory. The skill is transferable - the same listening discipline works on a Baroque concerto, a pop song or a jazz standard - so aural training is the most valuable revision you can do for this section.
A reliable listening routine works from the most audible elements to the most subtle, and uses the repeated playings deliberately. On the first hearing, fix the big, immediate features: the metre (tap the pulse and group it into twos, threes or fours; decide simple or compound), the tempo, the overall tonality (major or minor), the instrumentation and the general texture and mood. On the second hearing, listen for structure and change: where sections begin and end, any modulation, any shift of texture or dynamics. On the third and later hearings, target the fine detail the specific questions ask about - a particular cadence, an ornament, a rhythmic device, a compositional technique such as imitation or a pedal. Answering in this order stops you from missing an easy mark while straining after a hard one.
Certain features come up again and again and are worth drilling until they are instant. Cadences - perfect (a sense of full close), imperfect (an unfinished, questioning end), plagal (the 'Amen' fall), and interrupted (a surprise) - are frequently tested and are best learned by ear as sounds, not just as chord labels. Metre and time signature (distinguishing simple from compound, and duple from triple from quadruple) is a common early question. Texture (the four types) and instrumentation (recognising the timbre of individual instruments and voices) recur constantly. So do rhythmic devices (syncopation, dotted rhythms, triplets) and melodic devices (sequence, imitation, ornamentation). Building instant recognition of this core set turns much of Section A into quick, secure marks.
Aural dictation and melodic or rhythmic recall may also feature: you might be asked to complete a few missing notes or a rhythm in a printed extract, or to identify how a given phrase has been altered when it returns. These questions test the link between ear and notation. The method is to hum or internally sing the phrase, feel the pulse to place the rhythm, and use the surrounding printed notes as anchors for pitch - working out intervals up or down from a known note rather than trying to name pitches in the abstract. Even candidates who find dictation hard can secure marks by getting the rhythm and the contour right and reasoning carefully about the intervals.
The commonest way to lose marks in Section A is to answer imprecisely or to describe the wrong element. If a question asks for the tonality, 'it sounds happy' earns nothing where 'major key' earns the mark; if it asks for the texture, naming an instrument does not answer it. Read each question to see exactly which element and how much detail it wants, use the correct technical term, and, where the marks invite it, add a short justification ('perfect cadence, because it sounds finished, moving from the dominant to the tonic chord'). Precision, not length, is what this section rewards.
Worked example

Identifying a cadence by ear

An extract ends on a chord that sounds unfinished, as if asking a question. Work out and justify the cadence.

  1. 01Describe the effect

    The phrase does not sound resolved or complete - it hangs, inviting a continuation - which rules out the finished-sounding perfect and plagal cadences.

  2. 02Match the effect to a type

    An open, questioning ending is characteristic of an imperfect cadence, which ends on the dominant chord (V) rather than resolving to the tonic.

  3. 03Check against the alternative

    It is not an interrupted cadence, which gives a sudden surprise (V to vi) rather than a simple sense of pause - the effect here is unfinished, not startling.

  4. 04State and justify

    Answer 'imperfect cadence', justified by the unresolved, questioning quality of the ending on the dominant, which is exactly what the marks want.

Result: The cadence is identified by first describing the aural effect, then matching that effect to the correct named type and ruling out the near neighbour - the reliable route to secure cadence marks.

Key points

Section B is the score-based analysis section, and it concentrates on the compulsory Area of Study 1 set works from the Western classical tradition. Here a printed score or skeleton score is provided, and the questions expect you to locate and analyse features precisely - often by bar number - reading the notation to identify what is happening. This is the most technically demanding section because it tests both your ear and your ability to read and interpret a score, so it rewards candidates who have studied the set works closely and can move confidently around a page of notation.
Reading a score analytically means knowing what to look for and where. Scan the top of the page for the key signature and time signature (they fix the tonality and metre), the tempo and expression marks, and the list of instruments (the score order runs woodwind, brass, percussion, then strings, with any soloist and keyboard placed conventionally). Then read down through the staves at a given point to see the full texture - which instruments are playing, which carry the melody, which the accompaniment or bass. Being fluent with clefs (treble, bass, and the alto/tenor C-clefs for viola and some parts), with transposing instruments (a clarinet or trumpet sounding a different pitch from the written note), and with the conventions of a full score is what lets you answer a 'what happens in bars 12-16?' question quickly and correctly.
The analytical questions typically ask you to identify harmony, melody, texture, structure and compositional devices at named points. You might be asked to name a chord or a cadence at a given bar (working out the notes stacked in the texture and relating them to the key), to describe how a melodic idea is treated (transposed, sequenced, inverted, ornamented, imitated), to explain the texture at a moment (pointing to the specific lines on the score), or to identify a structural landmark (the return of the ritornello, the start of a development). Because the score is in front of you, vague answers score poorly - the examiner expects you to cite the evidence you can see, quoting bar numbers and describing exactly what the notation shows.
Harmonic analysis is often the hardest part and is worth a deliberate method. To name a chord at a point, read the pitches sounding at that beat from the bottom up, reduce them to their letter names, identify the root and quality (major, minor, diminished, dominant seventh), and then express the chord in relation to the key using Roman numerals (I, IV, V, V7, vi and so on) or figured-bass thinking in the Baroque works. To identify a cadence, look at the two chords at a phrase-ending and how the bass moves (V-I for a perfect cadence, IV-I for plagal, anything-to-V for imperfect, V-vi for interrupted). Practising this on the set works until it is quick is the single most effective preparation for Section B.
The section rewards close familiarity with the specific set works, not just general knowledge. Because the same works recur across the paper, you should know their structure, keys, main themes and characteristic devices thoroughly - where the concerto's ritornello returns and in which keys, how a Mozart aria is laid out, how a Romantic piano piece is organised and where it modulates. Annotating your own copies of the scores during the course - marking sections, keys, cadences and devices - builds exactly the map you need to navigate quickly under exam pressure. Since AQA rotates the chosen set works across specification cycles, always study the works named in your own current specification, and apply this same analytical method to them.
Worked example

Naming a chord from the score

At a given beat the score shows, from the bottom up, the pitches G, B and D in a passage in C major. Identify the chord and its function.

  1. 01Read the pitches bottom-up

    The sounding notes are G (bass), B and D - three different letter names stacked in thirds, so this is a triad.

  2. 02Find the root and quality

    Built in thirds the notes spell G-B-D, a G major triad with G as the root; the intervals G-B (major third) and B-D (minor third) confirm major quality.

  3. 03Relate to the key

    In C major, G is the fifth degree (the dominant), so a G major triad is chord V - the dominant chord.

  4. 04State the function

    This is chord V (the dominant) in C major; if the next chord is C major (I) at a phrase-end, the two together form a perfect cadence.

Result: The chord is identified by reading the stacked pitches, spelling the triad to find its root and quality, and relating it to the key as chord V - the exact, evidenced answer Section B rewards.

Exam focus

  • Cite the evidence you can see - quote bar numbers and describe exactly what the notation shows - rather than answering in general terms.
  • Have a fast, reliable method for naming chords and cadences from a score (read pitches bottom-up, find the root and quality, relate to the key).

  • Giving vague answers ('the harmony gets more complex') when the score allows a precise, evidenced one (a named chord or cadence at a stated bar).
  • Misreading the score through unfamiliarity with clefs or transposing instruments, so the identified pitches - and any chord built on them - are wrong.

Key points

Section C asks for two extended essays, and it is where analysis becomes argument. One essay is rooted in the compulsory Area of Study 1, and one typically requires comparison or connection - often drawing music together across an area of study, or relating the classical tradition to another style. Unlike the short listening answers, an essay must be a coherent, continuous piece of writing that makes and sustains a point, supports it with specific musical evidence, and reaches an evaluative judgement. It is the section that most rewards wide, thoughtful study and the ability to write fluently about music.
A strong music essay is built on specific musical detail, not general impressions. The examiner is looking for accurate use of the elements as evidence: naming keys, cadences, textures, structures, instrumentation and devices, and quoting or precisely describing moments in the music to support each point. An essay that says a concerto 'is very dramatic and exciting' earns little; one that says its drama comes from 'the terraced dynamics, the driving continuo, and the modulation to the relative minor at the central ritornello' earns credit, because it evidences the claim with the elements. The habit to build is: for every general statement, immediately supply the specific musical feature that demonstrates it.
Comparison essays need a genuine comparative structure, not two separate descriptions bolted together. Choose clear points of comparison - for example, how two styles use harmony, or rhythm, or texture, or structure - and under each point discuss both examples together, drawing out similarities and differences. This thematic organisation (comparing element by element) is far stronger than describing one piece fully and then the other, because it forces real analytical connection. Signposting the comparison with linking language ('whereas', 'similarly', 'by contrast') keeps the argument moving and shows the examiner you are genuinely comparing rather than merely listing.
Context and evaluation lift an essay from competent to strong. Contextual understanding means relating the music to its style, period, purpose or tradition - why a Baroque concerto sounds as it does, what a pop production is designed to achieve, how a film cue serves the drama - so that analysis is grounded in meaning, not floating free. Evaluation means making and justifying a critical judgement: assessing how effectively the music achieves its aims, or weighing the significance of a feature, rather than only describing. The best essays thread analysis, context and evaluation together, so that a described feature is always explained (why it is used) and, where the question invites it, judged (how well it works).
Practical essay technique matters under timed conditions. Plan briefly before writing - jot the points of comparison or the main arguments and the specific musical examples for each - so the essay has a shape and does not drift. Write a short opening that answers the question directly and signals the line of argument, develop each point in its own paragraph with evidence, and close with a judgement that draws the threads together. Manage the clock so both essays get written; a planned, evidenced, unfinished essay scores better than a rambling complete one. Above all, keep returning to the specific music: the essay is assessed on musical understanding, and every paragraph should show it.

Turning a vague sentence into evidenced argument

A student writes: 'The Baroque concerto is exciting and full of contrast.' Develop it into essay-standard argument.

  1. 01Keep the claim, demand the evidence

    The claim (excitement through contrast) is fine as a topic sentence - but it must now be evidenced with specific elements the music uses to create that contrast.

  2. 02Supply the musical detail

    Name the features: the alternation of full tutti ritornellos with lighter solo episodes, terraced dynamics, and the drive of the basso continuo and steady quaver motion.

  3. 03Explain how they create the effect

    Explain the mechanism - the sudden textural and dynamic shifts between tutti and solo create the sense of contrast and dialogue that makes the music feel dramatic.

  4. 04Add context and a judgement

    Relate it to the Baroque concerto principle of opposition (concertare) and judge its effectiveness: the recurring ritornello also unifies the movement, so the contrast is exciting yet coherent.

Result: The vague sentence becomes argument by keeping the claim as a topic sentence, evidencing it with named elements, explaining the mechanism, and adding context and a judgement - the pattern every essay paragraph should follow.

  • Support every general claim with specific musical evidence - named elements, devices and moments in the music.
  • Organise a comparison thematically (element by element, discussing both examples together) and end with a justified evaluative judgement.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing in generalities and adjectives ('dramatic', 'beautiful') without the musical detail that evidences them.
  • In a comparison, describing one piece fully and then the other separately, instead of genuinely comparing them point by point.

Plan (do not fully write) a comparison essay on how two contrasting styles you have studied use rhythm and texture: list three points of comparison and, for each, one specific musical feature from each style as evidence.
