Live-action and animation production

The CCEA portfolios can be realised by either of two production routes - LIVE-ACTION (filming real performers and places) or ANIMATION (creating movement frame by frame) - and this topic covers both. It explains the workflow of a live-action shoot (camera, lighting, sound and directing performers), the main animation techniques and the frame-by-frame illusion of movement, and how to choose the route and technique that best suit your concept. Whichever route you take, the same film language and the same Classical Hollywood Style continuity apply; the difference is in how the images are made.

Key points

A moving-image production can be realised by two fundamentally different routes: LIVE-ACTION, which films real performers, objects and places with a camera in continuous motion, and ANIMATION, which creates the illusion of movement by capturing or generating a series of still images (frames) that are then played back in quick succession. Both produce moving images and both tell stories through film language, but they make those images by opposite means - one captures existing movement, the other builds movement that never happened continuously in front of the camera.
The crucial thing to grasp is that FILM LANGUAGE IS THE SAME across both routes. Camera (framing, scale, angle, movement), editing, sound, lighting and mise-en-scene all apply equally to a live-action film and an animation; a close-up, a low angle, a match on action, low-key lighting, a diegetic sound - all exist in both. The Classical Hollywood Style and its continuity conventions apply to both, as do the realist and formalist traditions. So everything you have learned about reading and constructing meaning transfers directly, whichever route you choose - only the method of making the images differs.
The two routes have different STRENGTHS and DEMANDS. Live-action captures the richness and authenticity of the real world and real performance directly, and can be quick to shoot, but it depends on performers, locations, weather and equipment you must control on the day. Animation gives you total control over every element of the frame and can realise anything you can draw or build - the impossible, the fantastical, the highly stylised - but it is painstaking and slow, since movement must be created frame by frame. Neither is easier overall; they are different kinds of work.
The illusion of movement that underlies animation (and, in fact, all film) rests on the way the eye and brain fuse a rapid succession of slightly different still images into continuous motion. A film runs many frames per second, each a still photograph; animation exploits the same principle by creating those frames one at a time, with small changes between them, so that on playback the still images appear to move. Understanding that all moving images are, at bottom, sequences of stills is the key to understanding animation as a route.
For the CCEA portfolios you choose ONE route for a given production, and the choice should suit your concept, your skills and your resources. A story that depends on real, textured places and human performance suits live-action; a story that needs a stylised, controlled or impossible world may suit animation. The following sections cover the workflow of each route and how to choose - but remember throughout that the analytical and creative principles you apply are shared, and only the making differs.
Worked example

Recognising shared film language across routes

A student thinks continuity editing and the 180-degree rule are 'only for live-action films'. Why are they wrong?

  1. 01Recall what continuity governs

    Continuity editing and the 180-degree rule govern the coherence of screen SPACE - consistent positions, matched eyelines - regardless of how the images were made.

  2. 02Apply it to animation

    An animated conversation between two characters faces exactly the same problem: if the 'camera' crosses the line, the characters swap sides and the space becomes incoherent, just as in live-action.

  3. 03Note the shared toolkit

    Shot scale, angle, movement, cutting, lighting and sound all exist in animation too; an animator designs them frame by frame rather than capturing them, but the film-language principles are identical.

  4. 04State the conclusion

    Continuity and all film language apply to BOTH routes; the difference is only in how the images are produced, not in the grammar that governs them.

Result: The misconception is corrected by showing that continuity and film language govern screen space and meaning in any moving image - so they apply equally to live-action and animation.

Key points

Live-action production is the shoot: capturing real performers and places with a camera, according to the plan. It brings together four strands of work happening at once on set - operating the CAMERA (achieving the planned framing, scale, angle, focus and movement), arranging the LIGHTING (realising the intended look, whether naturalistic realist light or stylised low-key formalist light), recording the SOUND (capturing clean dialogue and the sounds you need), and directing the PERFORMERS (guiding the acting to realise the intended performance). Coordinating these four under time pressure is the craft of the live-action shoot.
Camera work on set means realising each storyboarded shot: setting up the framing and composition, choosing the lens, setting focus (deep or shallow), and executing any movement (a pan, a track, a handheld follow) cleanly and repeatably. Crucially, it means capturing proper COVERAGE - the establishing shot, the singles and reverses from one side of the line, the inserts and cutaways - and shooting several takes to secure a clean one. Camera work is where the visual plan meets the reality of the location, and disciplined execution here is what gives the edit good material.
Lighting and sound are often the elements students neglect, at their cost. Lighting must realise the intended look - and even 'natural' realist lighting usually needs shaping (a reflector to fill a shadow, positioning for consistent daylight), while formalist low-key lighting needs careful control of key, fill and back lights. Sound must be captured CLEANLY at the source, close to the performers and away from noise, with room tone recorded separately - because dialogue that is unclear or noisy on set is very hard to rescue later, and poor sound undermines a film more than poor picture.
Directing performers is the fourth strand: guiding the acting so that the performance realises the intended effect - naturalistic and unforced for a realist piece, or more heightened for a formalist one - and is consistent across the takes and coverage the edit will need. This means communicating what each moment requires (the objective, the feeling, the physical action), giving actors clear, playable direction, and watching for consistency of action and eyeline across shots so the footage will cut together. Even non-professional performers need this guidance to give usable, matched performances.
The overriding disciplines of the live-action shoot are to WORK THE PLAN and to MAINTAIN CONTINUITY. Work through the shot list methodically, capturing each planned shot with proper coverage and clean sound; and watch continuity constantly - matching action, eyelines, screen positions, props and the light across shots, so that the separate shots will assemble seamlessly. Errors caught on set are cheap to fix; errors discovered in the edit may be fatal. A well-run live-action shoot returns with everything the plan needs, captured cleanly and continuously.
Worked example

Prioritising on a time-limited shoot

You have ninety minutes at a location to shoot a key dialogue scene. How do you prioritise the four strands to come back with usable material?

  1. 01Secure sound and light first

    Set up clean sound (mic close, away from noise, room tone recorded) and workable lighting before shooting, since poor sound or light cannot be fixed later and would waste the whole session.

  2. 02Work the coverage in an efficient order

    Capture the establishing shot, then the singles and reverses from one side of the line, grouping by set-up to avoid re-lighting - the coverage the edit needs, in time-saving order.

  3. 03Direct for consistency

    Guide the performers to keep their action and eyelines consistent across takes and angles, so the coverage will match and cut together.

  4. 04Protect continuity and get safe takes

    Watch matched action, props and screen positions across shots, and capture a clean extra take of each key set-up as insurance before moving on.

Result: The limited shoot is prioritised to secure clean sound and light, capture matched coverage efficiently, and protect continuity - the on-set discipline that returns usable, cuttable material.

Key points

Animation creates the illusion of movement by producing a series of still frames, each slightly different, that on playback the eye fuses into continuous motion. The animator builds movement that never happened in front of the camera, one frame at a time, which gives total control over every element of the image but demands great patience - many frames are needed for even a second of screen time. Because animation constructs its images rather than capturing them, it can realise anything the animator can draw or build, from the naturalistic to the wholly impossible.
There are several main animation TECHNIQUES. DRAWN (traditional 2D) animation creates each frame as a drawing. STOP-MOTION captures physical objects photographed frame by frame, moving them slightly between shots - including MODEL or clay animation (posable figures) and CUT-OUT animation (flat jointed pieces moved on a surface). PIXILATION is stop-motion using real people as the 'objects', photographed frame by frame to make them move unnaturally. COMPUTER (CGI or digital 2D) animation generates frames in software. Each technique has its own look, its own labour, and its own expressive character.
The key craft concept in animation is the relationship between FRAMES and MOVEMENT. The smaller the change between frames, and the more frames per second, the smoother the movement; larger changes or fewer frames give a jerkier, more stylised motion. Animators plan movement carefully - often using a 'dope sheet' or exposure sheet to map out what happens on each frame, and 'keyframes' (the main poses) with 'in-between' frames bridging them - so that the timing and flow of the movement are designed rather than left to chance. Timing IS the performance in animation.
Because animation gives total control of the frame, it is a naturally powerful medium for FORMALIST expression - stylised, designed worlds, impossible transformations, expressive movement - but it can equally be used for realist, naturalistic ends. And all of film language applies: an animator chooses shot scale, angle and 'camera' movement, designs the lighting and mise-en-scene, plans the editing, and adds sound, exactly as a live-action filmmaker does. The Classical Hollywood Style and its continuity conventions apply too, since an animated scene must maintain coherent space just as a filmed one must.
Animation's great practical demand is TIME, so planning and scope discipline matter even more than in live-action. Because every second is laborious, an over-ambitious animation will not be finished; a realistic scope, careful pre-production (storyboard, shot list, exposure sheet) and efficient technique are essential. For a portfolio animation, choosing a technique you can execute well within the time available, and planning the movement frame by frame, is what turns the ambition into a finished, controlled piece.
Worked example

Designing movement with frames and timing

You want an animated character to raise their arm in a way that feels heavy and effortful, using stop-motion. How does the frames-to-movement relationship help you achieve this?

  1. 01Recall the principle

    Smaller changes between frames (and more frames) give slower, smoother movement; larger changes give faster, sharper movement - so timing is controlled by how much you move the model between frames.

  2. 02Plan the keyframes

    Set the main poses: arm down (start), arm halfway (straining), arm raised (end) - the keyframes that define the action.

  3. 03Design the in-betweens for weight

    Use many small increments between the poses, and slow the movement further near the top (small changes) to suggest the effort of lifting against weight - the timing conveys the heaviness.

  4. 04Map it on an exposure sheet

    Record on the exposure sheet exactly how far to move the arm on each frame, so the planned timing is executed precisely rather than guessed.

Result: The effortful arm-raise is achieved by controlling the change-per-frame and timing - many small increments, slowing at the top - showing how animation makes movement (and performance) through the frames-to-timing relationship.

Key points

Choosing the route and technique for a production is a decision that should follow from the CONCEPT, your SKILLS and your RESOURCES - not from habit or fashion. The first question is what the story needs: does it depend on real, textured places and human performance (favouring live-action), or on a stylised, controlled, or impossible world (favouring animation)? A concept and its ideal treatment should drive the choice, so that the making method serves the meaning rather than working against it.
The second question is what you can ACTUALLY ACHIEVE with your skills and resources in the time available - the scope discipline that runs through the whole course. Live-action can be quicker to shoot but depends on performers, locations and controllable conditions; animation gives total control but is slow and labour-intensive. An honest match between the ambition of the concept and the practical demands of the technique is essential: a beautiful idea realised in a technique you cannot finish is worthless, while a modest idea executed well in a manageable technique succeeds.
Whatever the route, the WORKFLOW is planned in pre-production and shaped by the technique. A live-action workflow runs development, pre-production (script, storyboard, shot list, casting, scheduling), the shoot, and post-production (edit, sound, grade). An animation workflow runs development, pre-production (script, storyboard, and an exposure sheet planning the movement), the painstaking frame-by-frame creation, and post-production (assembly, sound). The stages are the same in principle, but the balance of effort differs - live-action loads the shoot day, animation loads the long creation stage.
Film language and the Classical Hollywood Style are applied CONSISTENTLY whatever the technique, which is the thread that unifies the two routes. You still design shot scale, angle and movement, plan continuity and coverage, choose realist or formalist treatment, and build sound - whether you are capturing a live-action shot or constructing an animated one frame by frame. So the critical understanding you bring is identical; the technique only changes how you realise it. Keeping this in view stops you treating the two routes as different subjects rather than two means to the same expressive end.
For the portfolios, then, choose the route and technique that best serve your concept and that you can genuinely execute, plan the appropriate workflow in pre-production, and apply film language and continuity consistently throughout - documenting the choice and its reasons in your director's notebook. A production whose technique is well matched to its concept and competently executed will always outdo an ambitious idea attempted in an unsuitable or unmanageable technique. The skill is the honest, informed match of idea, technique and workflow.
Worked example

Matching technique to a concept

A concept is 'a lonely lighthouse keeper's small object comes to life at night'. Which route and technique might suit it, and why?

  1. 01Read what the concept needs

    The concept mixes a real, atmospheric setting (the lighthouse, the keeper) with an impossible event (an object coming to life) - the impossible element points towards animation, at least for the object.

  2. 02Weigh the routes

    Full live-action cannot easily make an object move on its own; full 2D animation could realise everything but loses the real texture of the setting; stop-motion (model animation) of the object suits its physical, tactile coming-to-life.

  3. 03Choose and justify

    Choose stop-motion for the object (its frame-by-frame, tactile movement suits a small thing waking up), planning the workflow around the slow frame-by-frame creation and a controlled tabletop set.

  4. 04Keep film language consistent

    Apply the same film language throughout - low-key night lighting for mood, close-ups on the object's first movements, continuity in the space - so the technique serves a consistent, coherent piece.

Result: The route and technique are matched to the concept (stop-motion for a tactile impossible event) with a workflow to suit and consistent film language - the informed, honest choice the qualification rewards.
