Πρώτο Θέμα: Αλλαγές στην ελληνική κοινωνία — family, gender roles and the world of work

This topic carries the whole of Edexcel's first theme, Πρώτο Θέμα: Αλλαγές στην ελληνική κοινωνία, which the specification sets in the context of Greece only and describes as society past and present. It covers both sub-themes — Σχέσεις και Οικογένεια, with its three aspects of the evolving nuclear-family model, gender roles, and relationships with older people and with peers, and Ο χώρος της εργασίας, with employment trends in Greece, unemployment, and students in the labour market — and it also carries the theme's research subject, Η Παιδεία στην Ελλάδα, whose three aspects are developments in the education system, the language question and changes to the taught curriculum. The frozen topic slot is one of two labelled social issues and trends; this one is Greece. The other, social-issues-and-trends-2, is Cyprus and only Cyprus, because Θέμα 3 is scoped that way in the specification. Content from this theme can surface in every paper: as the source of a Paper 1 Section A translation passage, among the reading texts of Paper 1 Section B, as the sub-theme behind a Paper 3 listening or reading source, as the material of a Paper 2 Section A translation into Greek, and — if the student chooses Η Παιδεία — as the entire substance of the 40-mark research question in Paper 1 Section C. Greek is written monotonically throughout, and every Greek expression here is given in a form a candidate can reuse in writing.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is accurate description with a personal response: name the change, describe it in correct Greek with the right case endings, and give one reason and one consequence without contradicting yourself.

higher level

The full A-Level expects the change to be dated and located, causal claims to be attributed rather than asserted, generalisation about all Greeks to be replaced by a specific about a place, a generation or a sector, and the language to reach the pluperfect, the passive and the subjunctive that the AO3 grid calls complex.

Key points

The specification's first aspect is η εξέλιξη του μοντέλου της πυρηνικής οικογένειας, and the word to notice is εξέλιξη, evolution. The aspect is not the nuclear family as a fixed object but the movement towards it and beyond it, which means a candidate has to be able to describe at least two states of affairs and the passage between them. The vocabulary is stable and worth owning outright: η πυρηνική οικογένεια is the nuclear family, η εκτεταμένη or η διευρυμένη οικογένεια the extended one, το νοικοκυριό the household as an economic unit, ο γάμος marriage, το διαζύγιο divorce, η συμβίωση cohabitation, το σύμφωνο συμβίωσης the civil partnership, and η μονογονεϊκή οικογένεια the single-parent family. Each of these is a noun with a gender that governs everything around it, so learn them with their article attached rather than bare.
The historical movement is easy to state without exaggerating it. In the decades after the Second World War, and especially with the internal migration from the countryside to Athens and Thessaloniki, the household that several generations shared gave way in the cities to a smaller unit of parents and children. Greek has a compact way of saying this — τρεις γενιές κάτω από την ίδια στέγη, three generations under the same roof — and a compact way of saying what replaced it: το πυρηνικό μοντέλο επικράτησε στις πόλεις. What did not happen is the disappearance of the wider family. The grandparents remained, and remained load-bearing: οι παππούδες εξακολουθούν να αναλαμβάνουν τη φροντίδα των εγγονιών. Writing that the extended family vanished is the commonest single factual error in this aspect, and it is easy to avoid.
The second movement is more recent and is where an examiner looks for precision. Marriage happens later and less often than it did, households are smaller, and the shapes a family can legally take have widened. Greece introduced a civil partnership, το σύμφωνο συμβίωσης, by law in 2008, and extended it to same-sex couples by law in 2015; civil marriage for same-sex couples followed in February 2024, making Greece the first majority-Orthodox country to legislate it. Those are dated legal facts and can be written flatly. What must not be written flatly is what they mean about Greek society, because that is contested inside Greece itself — the Church of Greece opposed the 2024 law, and public opinion has been reported as divided. Say who holds a view; do not award it.
The examinable skill is turning a described change into an argued one, and Greek gives you the connectives to do it. Set up a contrast with ενώ παλαιότερα … σήμερα, whereas formerly … today. Concede with αν και and με βάση or παρά το γεγονός ότι, although and despite the fact that. Attribute with σύμφωνα με, according to, and με κατά την άποψη ορισμένων, in the view of some. Draw a consequence with με αποτέλεσμα να followed by the subjunctive, with the result that. A sentence such as Ενώ παλαιότερα η φροντίδα των ηλικιωμένων γινόταν αποκλειστικά μέσα στην οικογένεια, σήμερα ένα μέρος της έχει μετατοπιστεί σε δομές, με αποτέλεσμα να αλλάζουν οι προσδοκίες και των δύο πλευρών carries an imperfect, a present perfect passive, a subordinate result clause and a specific claim — exactly the profile the AO3 grid calls complex language.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section A: translating a passage on the family into English, sentence by sentence

Translate this passage into English as you would in Paper 1 Section A, where 20 marks are awarded by a points-based scheme giving one mark for each correct individual section of language.

  1. 01Sentence 1 — fix the tense before you choose the English verb

Η ελληνική οικογένεια άλλαξε ριζικά τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες. Άλλαξε is the simple past, third person singular, of αλλάζω. Greek uses the simple past freely where English idiom reaches for the present perfect, and here the time phrase τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, in recent decades, pulls English towards has changed. Both has changed radically and changed radically will be accepted, because the points scheme rewards the correct section of language, not one canonical wording. Τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες is accusative because Greek marks duration and extent with the bare accusative — no preposition to translate. Ριζικά is the adverb of ριζικός, from ρίζα, root; radically or fundamentally.

  2. 02Sentence 2 — an imperfect and a mediopassive imperfect in one breath

Παλαιότερα, τρεις γενιές ζούσαν συχνά κάτω από την ίδια στέγη και οι αποφάσεις παίρνονταν από κοινού. Παλαιότερα is a comparative adverb used absolutely, in earlier times or formerly. Ζούσαν is the imperfect of ζω, they used to live — a repeated or habitual past, and the habitual reading is what συχνά, often, confirms. Παίρνονταν is the imperfect of the mediopassive παίρνομαι, decisions were taken, and it is the form candidates most often mistranslate as a present. Από κοινού is a fixed adverbial phrase, jointly or in common; translating it word by word as from common earns nothing. Τρεις is the masculine and feminine plural form of three; η γενιά is feminine, so τρεις is correct and τρία would be wrong.

  3. 03Sentence 3 — the perfect, and a negative purpose-free subordinate

Σήμερα το πυρηνικό μοντέλο έχει επικρατήσει στις πόλεις, χωρίς όμως να έχει εξαφανιστεί η επιρροή των παππούδων. Έχει επικρατήσει is the present perfect of επικρατώ, has come to predominate or has become dominant. Χωρίς να is without plus a verb, and Greek follows it with the subjunctive; here the subjunctive is itself perfect, να έχει εξαφανιστεί, so the whole clause means without the influence of grandparents having disappeared. Όμως, however, is placed inside the clause in Greek where English would front it. Των παππούδων is genitive plural of ο παππούς; note that the genitive plural, not a preposition, is doing the work of English of. Rendering this clause as although the influence of grandparents has not disappeared is acceptable and keeps the English natural.

  4. 04Sentence 4 — the clitic cluster is the trap and the mark

Πολλοί νέοι μένουν με τους γονείς τους μέχρι τα τριάντα, όχι επειδή το θέλουν, αλλά επειδή δεν τους το επιτρέπουν οι οικονομικές συνθήκες. Τους in με τους γονείς τους is the possessive weak pronoun, their parents, and it is a different τους from the one in δεν τους το επιτρέπουν, which is the genitive plural weak pronoun meaning to them. In a Greek clitic cluster the genitive comes first and the accusative second: τους το, to them it. So δεν τους το επιτρέπουν οι οικονομικές συνθήκες is economic conditions do not allow them to. Όχι επειδή … αλλά επειδή is not because … but because, a two-armed causal frame that a comprehension question will often target. Μέχρι τα τριάντα is until thirty, with the neuter plural article standing in for the age.

  5. 05Check the finished English against the points scheme, not against elegance

Read your English back sentence by sentence and ask of each chunk whether a marker could find the Greek in it. Every tense, every plural, every negative, every connective is a potential point. The two places to slow down are παίρνονταν, which must not become take or are taken, and χωρίς να έχει εξαφανιστεί, where dropping the perfect loses a section of language. Nothing is gained by improving the register; a fluent paraphrase that quietly deletes όμως or από κοινού scores below a plainer version that keeps them.

Result: The Greek family has changed radically in recent decades. In earlier times three generations often lived under the same roof and decisions were taken jointly. Today the nuclear model has become dominant in the cities, without the influence of grandparents having disappeared. Many young people stay with their parents until they are thirty, not because they want to but because economic conditions do not allow them to.

Exam focus

  • The aspect is the EVOLUTION of the model, so two states and the movement between them, not a snapshot (AO4).
  • Dated legal facts — the 2008 σύμφωνο συμβίωσης, its 2015 extension, the 2024 civil-marriage law — are stateable; what they signify about Greek society is attributed, never awarded.
  • The extended family did not disappear. Grandparent care is a live and describable arrangement, not nostalgia.
  • Range is earned with ενώ … σήμερα, αν και, παρά το γεγονός ότι, με αποτέλεσμα να plus the subjunctive (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing that Greeks used to live in extended families and now live in nuclear ones, with no place, no date and no exception — a sentence true of nowhere in particular.
  • Claiming the extended family has vanished, when grandparent childcare is one of the most describable features of the present arrangement.
  • Turning the legal changes into a verdict on Greek society. State the law and its date; attribute the interpretation.
  • Losing the gender of the nouns. Η οικογένεια is feminine, το νοικοκυριό neuter, ο γάμος masculine, and every adjective and article around them has to agree.

Active revision

Write 200 words in Greek describing how the shape of the Greek household changed between the mid-twentieth century and today, in three movements: what the arrangement was, what replaced it in the cities, and what survived the change. Every sentence must have a subject you could point to — a generation, a place, a decade — and at least three sentences must use a subordinating connective from the list ενώ, αν και, παρά το γεγονός ότι, με αποτέλεσμα να.

Οι έμφυλοι ρόλοι: home, work and the distance between law and practice#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Πρώτο Θέμα — Σχέσεις και Οικογένεια: οι έμφυλοι ρόλοιLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

Οι έμφυλοι ρόλοι is the specification's own term and it is more precise than the English gender roles: έμφυλος is an adjective formed on φύλο, sex or gender, and it means gendered. The related nouns are η ισότητα των φύλων, equality of the sexes, η ανισότητα, inequality, ο σεξισμός, and το στερεότυπο. For the domestic half of the aspect you need οι οικιακές εργασίες or τα οικιακά, housework, η φροντίδα των παιδιών, childcare, η άμισθη εργασία, unpaid work, and the useful compound διπλή βάρδια, the double shift — the phrase for doing a paid job and then the unpaid one. For the public half you need η συμμετοχή στην αγορά εργασίας, labour-market participation, ο μισθός, wage, and το μισθολογικό χάσμα, the pay gap.
The structure that makes this aspect writable is the distance between formal equality and observed practice, and Greek has clean formulas for both halves. Formal equality is stateable: the Greek Constitution establishes equality before the law and equal rights and obligations irrespective of sex, and Greece is bound by European Union equal-treatment law. Written in Greek, το Σύνταγμα κατοχυρώνει την ισότητα, the constitution enshrines equality, and η νομοθεσία απαγορεύει τις διακρίσεις, the law forbids discrimination. Observed practice is different in kind: it is measured, reported and argued about. Introduce it as such — έρευνες δείχνουν ότι, research shows that, or σύμφωνα με στοιχεία της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, according to European Union data — and never as a fact you personally certify.
Two substantive things are worth knowing well enough to write about without numbers. First, women's participation in paid employment in Greece has risen over the long run but has consistently been reported as below the European Union average, while the share of unpaid domestic and care work performed by women has been reported as high; the two findings are usually presented together because each explains the other. Second, the causal explanations offered for this are genuinely different from one another and can be set against each other in an essay: some point to the availability and cost of childcare, some to the structure of the labour market and the prevalence of part-time and informal work, some to persisting expectations inside the household. Naming three explanations and weighing them is what the AO4 grid means by critical analysis.
The examiner's word for the top band is perceptive, defined in the specification as making connections between ideas and going beyond the standard, predictable response. In this aspect the predictable response is a list of ways in which women are disadvantaged. The connection that lifts it is with the rest of the theme: gender roles bear directly on the family aspect, because who cares for children and for older relatives determines who can take paid work; on Ο χώρος της εργασίας, because part-time and short-term contracts are distributed unevenly; and on the research subject Η Παιδεία, because educational attainment among Greek women has been reported as high relative to their labour-market position, which is a contrast worth stating and explaining rather than merely noting.
Worked example

Paper 2 Section A: translating into Greek, with every decision justified

Translate the following into Greek as you would in Paper 2 Section A, where 20 marks are awarded on the same points-based logic as Paper 1 Section A. Attitudes to the roles of men and women have changed more quickly in the cities than in the villages. Many women now work outside the home, but society still expects them to look after the children and the housework. Younger couples say that they share the responsibilities, although research shows that the burden has not been divided equally.

  1. 01Sentence 1 — choose the noun, then let the case follow

Οι αντιλήψεις για τους ρόλους των ανδρών και των γυναικών άλλαξαν πιο γρήγορα στις πόλεις παρά στα χωριά. Attitudes is οι αντιλήψεις, feminine plural, from η αντίληψη; the alternative οι στάσεις is also defensible. Attitudes to takes για plus the accusative, so τους ρόλους. Of men and of women is two genitive plurals, and each has an irregular shape a candidate must simply know: ο άνδρας gives των ανδρών, η γυναίκα gives των γυναικών. Άλλαξαν is the simple past third plural. The comparative is πιο γρήγορα, and the second term of a comparison after πιο is introduced by παρά or by από; παρά is safer before a prepositional phrase, so στις πόλεις παρά στα χωριά.

  2. 02Sentence 2 — decide what to do with the agentless English passive

English says they are still expected to, with no agent. Greek can do the same with αναμένεται να or εξακολουθεί να αναμένεται να, but the more natural and more markable choice is to supply the agent that English suppressed: αλλά η κοινωνία εξακολουθεί να περιμένει από αυτές να φροντίζουν τα παιδιά και το νοικοκυριό. Notice three separate things. Εξακολουθώ να plus the subjunctive is continues to. Περιμένω από κάποιον να is expects someone to, with από plus the accusative for the person and να for the thing expected. Και the two objects τα παιδιά and το νοικοκυριό are both accusative after φροντίζουν, although φροντίζω can also take για plus the accusative. Work outside the home is εργάζονται εκτός σπιτιού, with εκτός taking the genitive.

  3. 03Sentence 3 — the concessive, and a perfect passive

Τα νεότερα ζευγάρια λένε ότι μοιράζονται τις ευθύνες, αν και οι έρευνες δείχνουν ότι το βάρος δεν έχει μοιραστεί ισότιμα. Younger couples is τα νεότερα ζευγάρια, neuter plural, so the adjective is neuter plural too. Say that is λένε ότι — πως is equally correct and varying between them is free range. Μοιράζονται is the mediopassive of μοιράζω used reciprocally, they share. Although is αν και. The final clause needs the perfect passive of μοιράζω: δεν έχει μοιραστεί, has not been divided. That form is worth rehearsing because the AO3 grid names the passive and the perfect as complex language, and this one sentence supplies both.

  4. 04Run the accuracy check the mark scheme actually describes

The examiner guidance says in so many words that errors of gender and adjectival agreement are tolerated as long as they do not include a mismatch of cases, and it gives its own Greek example of the fatal kind. So the check has a priority order. First, cases: every preposition, every object, every genitive of possession. Second, verb persons and tenses. Third, agreement. Read the Greek once looking only at case endings, then once looking only at verbs. That is faster and catches more than reading for overall sense, which is what most candidates do.

Exam focus

  • Έμφυλος is the spec's adjective. Use it, with η ισότητα των φύλων, το μισθολογικό χάσμα and η άμισθη εργασία.
  • Split the aspect into formal equality — constitution, legislation, EU obligations, all stateable — and observed practice, which is always attributed (AO4).
  • Offer more than one causal explanation and weigh them. A single explanation, however true, is not critical analysis.
  • Connect deliberately to the family aspect, to the work sub-theme and to education. Connection is the specification's own definition of a perceptive answer.

Typical mistakes

  • Producing invented percentages. If you cannot source a figure, write the direction of the finding and who reported it, and spend the words on explanation instead.
  • Confusing legal equality with lived equality, in either direction — asserting that the law solved it, or that the law says nothing.
  • Writing only about women. The aspect is gendered roles, and expectations placed on men, including around care and paternity, belong in it.
  • Using η γυναίκα as a generic singular for all women throughout, which produces a stilted essay; vary with οι γυναίκες, ένα μεγάλο μέρος των γυναικών, οι εργαζόμενες μητέρες.

Active revision

Write 220 words in Greek on the proposition Η ισότητα των φύλων στην Ελλάδα κατοχυρώνεται νομικά αλλά δεν έχει ολοκληρωθεί στην πράξη. Devote the first third to what the law establishes, written without hedging; the second third to what is observed, every claim carrying an attribution; and the last third to at least two competing explanations, ending with which you find more persuasive and why. Use at least one passive and one pluperfect.

§ 03

Οι σχέσεις με τους μεγαλύτερους και τους συνομήλικους#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Πρώτο Θέμα — Σχέσεις και Οικογένεια: οι σχέσεις με τους μεγαλύτερους και τους συνομήλικουςLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The third aspect pairs two relationships that a candidate should keep distinct, because they are governed by different vocabulary and different arguments. Οι μεγαλύτεροι are older people — the comparative of μεγάλος used as a noun — and the surrounding words are οι ηλικιωμένοι, the elderly, οι παππούδες, grandparents, ο σεβασμός, respect, η φροντίδα, care, and το χάσμα των γενεών, the generation gap. Οι συνομήλικοι are peers, people of the same age, and their world is η παρέα, the group of friends, η φιλία, friendship, η πίεση των συνομηλίκων, peer pressure, and τα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, social media. A good answer moves between the two and shows how each shapes the other rather than treating them as two separate essays stapled together.
Η παρέα deserves a paragraph of its own because it is the one word in this aspect that has no clean English equivalent, and examiners reward a candidate who can handle it. It is not simply a group of friends; it is a stable social unit with its own habits, its own places and a claim on your time, and Greek uses it constantly: βγαίνω με την παρέα, I go out with my crowd; η παρέα μου από το σχολείο, my school crowd. Related is το στέκι, the regular haunt, and η βόλτα, the walk out with no destination that is itself the activity. Using these words accurately, and glossing the idea rather than mistranslating it, demonstrates exactly the cultural knowledge the AO4 grid is looking for.
On the relationship with older people the describable substance is the care arrangement and the way it has been changing. Care of older relatives in Greece has traditionally been provided inside the family, largely by women; that arrangement has come under pressure from smaller households, from women's paid employment and from internal and external migration, and part of it has shifted towards paid carers and towards institutional provision, which remains a subject of argument. In Greek: η φροντίδα των ηλικιωμένων παραδοσιακά γινόταν μέσα στην οικογένεια· σήμερα ένα μέρος της ανατίθεται σε τρίτους. The verb ανατίθεται, is assigned or entrusted, is a good mediopassive to have ready. Do not assert that the family has abandoned older people; that is a judgement, and it is one that Greek commentators themselves disagree about.
The peer half of the aspect is where the theme touches Δεύτερο Θέμα, because social media reshapes both friendship and the way cultural life is consumed, and a research candidate on any subject can use that connection. Keep the treatment concrete: what changed is not that young people have friends but where the friendship is transacted, how visible it is, and how quickly a group can form or dissolve. Useful Greek for this: η επικοινωνία είναι πλέον συνεχής αλλά πιο επιφανειακή is a claim, not a fact, so introduce it with πολλοί υποστηρίζουν ότι, many argue that. The best answers acknowledge that the same evidence supports opposite readings and say which they find more convincing, which is precisely what the top AO4 band asks for.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section B: reading a reflective passage and answering open-response questions in Greek

Read the passage as you would in Paper 1 Section B, where four questions mix multiple choice with open response and all questions are set in Greek and must be answered in Greek.

  1. 01Locate the writer's thesis before you look at any question

The thesis is in the second sentence, and it is signalled by a structure rather than by a keyword: Δεν πρόκειται απλώς για Χ· πρόκειται για Υ. Πρόκειται για is an impersonal expression meaning it is a matter of or it is about. The frame not merely X but Y tells you the writer is correcting an expected, smaller description. Any question of the form Ποια είναι η άποψη του συγγραφέα; is answered here and nowhere else. The ano teleia, the raised dot ·, is doing the job of a colon and marks the pivot.

  2. 02Read the relative clause that carries the writer's real claim

μια ολόκληρη οικονομία φροντίδας που δεν καταγράφεται πουθενά. An entire care economy that is recorded nowhere. Καταγράφεται is the mediopassive present of καταγράφω, is recorded or is registered, and πουθενά is nowhere, requiring the double negative with δεν that Greek insists on. The claim is that this work is economically real but statistically invisible. A candidate who summarises the sentence as grandparents help with the children has read the topic and missed the argument, and open-response marks in Section B are awarded for the argument.

  3. 03Answer an open-response question in Greek without lifting

Suppose the question is Γιατί ο συγγραφέας χαρακτηρίζει τη φροντίδα των παππούδων «οικονομία»; A lifted answer repeats the writer's clause and earns little, because Section B rewards understanding demonstrated in your own words. A strong answer re-encodes it: Επειδή, κατά τον συγγραφέα, πρόκειται για πραγματική εργασία με οικονομική αξία, η οποία όμως δεν καταγράφεται σε καμία στατιστική. Notice the deliberate substitutions — πραγματική εργασία for οικονομία, δεν καταγράφεται σε καμία στατιστική for δεν καταγράφεται πουθενά — and the attribution κατά τον συγγραφέα, which costs three words and signals that you know whose claim it is.

  4. 04Handle the untranslatable word in the last sentence

μια λέξη που δύσκολα μεταφράζεται και που σημαίνει πολύ περισσότερα από «φίλοι». The writer has flagged η παρέα as resistant to translation, which is itself a likely question: Τι εννοεί ο συγγραφέας λέγοντας ότι η λέξη «παρέα» δύσκολα μεταφράζεται; The answer is not a definition of παρέα but an account of why a definition fails: Εννοεί ότι η λέξη δεν δηλώνει απλώς ένα σύνολο ατόμων, αλλά μια σταθερή ομάδα με δικές της συνήθειες και δικό της ρόλο στη ζωή του νέου. Δύσκολα is an adverb here, with difficulty, and μεταφράζεται is again mediopassive.

Result: Thesis: grandparent care is not incidental help but an unrecorded care economy. Model open-response answer, in Greek and not lifted: Επειδή, κατά τον συγγραφέα, πρόκειται για πραγματική εργασία με οικονομική αξία, η οποία όμως δεν καταγράφεται σε καμία στατιστική. Second model answer: Εννοεί ότι η λέξη δεν δηλώνει απλώς ένα σύνολο ατόμων, αλλά μια σταθερή ομάδα με δικές της συνήθειες και δικό της ρόλο στη ζωή του νέου.

Exam focus

  • Keep οι μεγαλύτεροι and οι συνομήλικοι as two relationships with two vocabularies, then connect them deliberately.
  • Η παρέα, το στέκι, η βόλτα — culture-specific words used correctly are AO4 evidence, not decoration.
  • The shift in elder care is describable; a verdict on whether families have abandoned older people is not yours to give.
  • Frame claims about social media as claims: πολλοί υποστηρίζουν ότι, ορισμένοι ερευνητές θεωρούν ότι.

Typical mistakes

  • Translating η παρέα as friends and losing the whole point of the word.
  • Writing about respect for the elderly as a timeless Greek trait. The aspect asks what has changed, not what is eternal.
  • Treating social media as self-evidently harmful, or self-evidently liberating. Both are positions and both need holders.
  • Muddling οι μεγαλύτεροι, older people, with οι μεγάλοι, adults or grown-ups — a small slip that changes the sentence.

Active revision

Write 200 words in Greek answering the question Πώς έχουν αλλάξει οι σχέσεις των νέων με τους μεγαλύτερους και με τους συνομηλίκους τους στην Ελλάδα; Structure it so that the two relationships each get a paragraph and the third paragraph connects them — for instance through the time a young person has, or through where they live. Use η παρέα at least once, correctly, and attribute at least two claims.

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Πρώτο Θέμα — Ο χώρος της εργασίας: οι εξελίξεις στον τομέα της απασχόλησης στην Ελλάδα, ανεργία, οι φοιτητές στην αγορά εργασίαςLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The second sub-theme has three aspects and they form a sequence: what has happened to employment in Greece, what unemployment looks like, and where students sit in the labour market. The core vocabulary has to be exact, because these are the words a listening or reading source will use without explanation. Η απασχόληση is employment as a phenomenon; η εργασία is work; η δουλειά is a job in ordinary speech; ο εργαζόμενος and η εργαζόμενη are the employed person; η ανεργία is unemployment and ο άνεργος the unemployed person; το ποσοστό ανεργίας is the unemployment rate; η μερική απασχόληση is part-time work and η πλήρης απασχόληση full-time; η σύμβαση is the contract, ορισμένου χρόνου fixed-term and αορίστου χρόνου open-ended; η αδήλωτη εργασία is undeclared work.
The developments in employment are best organised by sector, because that is how Greek sources organise them, and because it lets a candidate be specific without needing statistics. Ο πρωτογενής τομέας is the primary sector, agriculture and fishing; ο δευτερογενής τομέας industry and construction; ο τριτογενής τομέας services. The long-run movement in Greece, as in comparable European economies, has been out of the primary sector and into services, with tourism, shipping and public administration especially prominent, and with a business landscape in which μικρομεσαίες επιχειρήσεις, small and medium-sized enterprises, and η οικογενειακή επιχείρηση, the family business, account for a large share of employment. That last fact links the sub-theme straight back to Σχέσεις και Οικογένεια, and connections of that kind are what the AO4 grid calls perceptive.
Unemployment in Greece has to be handled with dates and without invented numbers. The documented shape is this: unemployment rose steeply after 2009 in the course of the debt crisis, reached levels that were among the highest in the European Union in the mid-2010s, and has fallen substantially since, though remaining comparatively high. Two features are consistently reported and are more useful in an essay than any single figure. First, η ανεργία των νέων, youth unemployment, ran far above the general rate. Second, η μακροχρόνια ανεργία, long-term unemployment, formed a large share of the total, which matters because a long spell out of work erodes skills and contacts. Write these as reported patterns, with σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία or όπως καταγράφεται, and let the analysis do the work.
The third aspect, οι φοιτητές στην αγορά εργασίας, is the one candidates most often write thinly, and it has real content. Greek students commonly combine study with work; graduate employment often lags the qualification, producing what Greek calls η υποαπασχόληση, underemployment, and ετεροαπασχόληση, working outside one's field; unpaid or low-paid η πρακτική άσκηση, work placement, is a standard entry route; and a substantial number of graduates left the country during and after the crisis, a movement Greek names το brain drain or, in Greek, η διαρροή εγκεφάλων or η φυγή των νέων επιστημόνων. That last phenomenon connects the sub-theme to Τέταρτο Θέμα and to the research subject Η Παιδεία, and a candidate who can move between the three is writing an A-Level essay rather than a topic summary.
Worked example

Paper 3 Section B question 5(a): summarising the points of view in a heard source

This is a transcript of the listening source. Summarise the different points of view it expresses, as question 5(a) requires, in Greek.

  1. 01Understand what 5(a) is marked on before you write a word

Question 5(a) is points-based, not levels-based: the marks sit on identified points of view, not on style. Section B as a whole is 30 marks, of which the three grids for 5(c) account for 22 — AO1 out of 6, AO2 out of 6 and AO3 out of 10 — so 5(a) and 5(b) together carry the remaining 8. That arithmetic tells you exactly how to budget: a compact, complete list of viewpoints, not a paragraph of prose. Write in Greek, because all questions in both sections are set in Greek and must be answered in Greek.

  2. 02Extract the corrective thesis, which is the first point of view

Το πρόβλημα δεν είναι ότι οι νέοι δεν δουλεύουν· είναι ότι δουλεύουν με όρους που δεν τους επιτρέπουν να σχεδιάσουν τίποτα. The speaker is refusing one diagnosis and substituting another, and both halves are points of view. Point one: η άποψη ότι οι νέοι δεν εργάζονται απορρίπτεται. Point two: το πρόβλημα εντοπίζεται στους όρους εργασίας. Τους σχεδιάσουν — note the clitic τους is the genitive plural, to them, and the negative δεν attaches to επιτρέπουν, not to σχεδιάσουν.

  3. 03Turn the list of conditions into the evidence for point two, not a third point

Μερική απασχόληση, συμβάσεις τριών μηνών, μισθοί που δεν καλύπτουν ένα ενοίκιο. This is a verbless list, common in speech, and it supports the second viewpoint rather than adding a new one. In a summary, subordinate it: ως παραδείγματα αναφέρονται η μερική απασχόληση, οι βραχυχρόνιες συμβάσεις και οι χαμηλοί μισθοί. Συμβάσεις τριών μηνών is a genitive of description, three-month contracts, and reusing that construction in your own answer is free AO3 range.

  4. 04Catch the third viewpoint, which is about graduates specifically

Όσοι σπούδασαν περιμένουν χρόνια για μια θέση σχετική με το πτυχίο τους, και πολλοί τελικά μεταναστεύουν στο εξωτερικό. Όσοι σπούδασαν is those who studied, a headless relative in the simple past. This is a distinct claim about graduates, and it has a consequence attached — emigration. Summarised: για τους πτυχιούχους ειδικότερα, η αναμονή για θέση σχετική με τις σπουδές τους οδηγεί πολλούς στη μετανάστευση. The verb οδηγεί σε, leads to, is the summariser's friend and should be in your active stock.

Exam focus

  • Learn the three sectors by their Greek names. Organising employment by sector lets you be specific without numbers.
  • Youth unemployment and long-term unemployment are the two reported features worth more than any single figure (AO4).
  • Η υποαπασχόληση, η ετεροαπασχόληση, η πρακτική άσκηση, η διαρροή εγκεφάλων — precise terms for the student aspect.
  • Contracts: ορισμένου χρόνου versus αορίστου χρόνου. The genitive-of-description construction itself is an AO3 range point.

Typical mistakes

  • Quoting an unemployment percentage from memory. Give the direction, the period and the source type instead.
  • Treating the crisis as the beginning of Greek labour-market history. The sectoral shift long predates 2009.
  • Writing brain drain in English inside a Greek answer when η διαρροή εγκεφάλων or η φυγή νέων επιστημόνων is available.
  • Confusing η εργασία, work in general, with η δουλειά, a particular job, in a formal written register.

Active revision

Write 220 words in Greek on Ποιες είναι οι μεγαλύτερες προκλήσεις για έναν νέο πτυχιούχο στην ελληνική αγορά εργασίας; Name three challenges, each with a concrete mechanism rather than an adjective, and end by saying which you consider the hardest to change and why. Use at least one fixed-term-contract phrase, one sector name and one attributed claim.

Ερευνητικό θέμα: Η Παιδεία στην Ελλάδα — the system, the language question, the curriculum#

Fig. 1The first aspect of the research subject, εξελίξεις στο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα, is easier to write about once the ladder itself is fixed. Compulsory schooling runs from the νηπιαγωγείο through the six years of the δημοτικό to the end of the three-year γυμνάσιο; the three-year λύκειο is not compulsory and takes a general (γενικό) or a vocational (επαγγελματικό) form; and access to the τριτοβάθμια tier is decided by the national examinations, οι πανελλαδικές εξετάσεις, which is why the last year of the λύκειο is organised around them. Naming the tiers in Greek is worth marks in itself, because these are the words every Greek source uses.

Key points

Η Παιδεία στην Ελλάδα is one of the four research subjects, which means that a student who selects it must cover all three of its aspects and will answer the 40-mark Paper 1 Section C question on it, using their own research findings together with an unseen Greek text. The word παιδεία is itself worth a sentence: it is broader than εκπαίδευση, which is schooling or instruction, and reaches towards education in the sense of formation. The system's own vocabulary is fixed and should be used exactly — η προσχολική, η πρωτοβάθμια, η δευτεροβάθμια and η τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση for the four levels, το Υπουργείο Παιδείας for the ministry, and η διδακτέα ύλη for the taught curriculum, literally the material to be taught, a phrase the specification uses in its own aspect heading.
The first aspect, εξελίξεις στο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα, is best written as a ladder plus the pressure points on it. Compulsory schooling runs from the νηπιαγωγείο through the six years of δημοτικό to the three years of γυμνάσιο; the non-compulsory λύκειο lasts three more, in a γενικό or an επαγγελματικό form, and entry to universities and other tertiary institutions is decided by the national examinations, οι πανελλαδικές εξετάσεις. Two features that Greek sources always mention are worth knowing. Το φροντιστήριο, the private cramming school, and ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα, private tuition, are so widespread that they function as a parallel system with a real cost to families. And ο βαθμός εισαγωγής, the entry mark, produces a competition that shapes the last years of school around the examination.
The second aspect, το γλωσσικό ζήτημα, is genuine history and largely settled, and it should be taught as such. For roughly a century and a half after independence, Greek was written in two competing forms: η καθαρεύουσα, a purified variety modelled on older Greek and used by the state, the courts, the press and the schools, and η δημοτική, the spoken language of ordinary use. The dispute was never only linguistic. Psycharis's Το ταξίδι μου of 1888 made demoticism a programme; the Ευαγγελικά of 1901 and the Ορεστειακά of 1903 produced street violence in Athens over a demotic gospel translation and a modern-Greek staging of Aeschylus; demotic entered the primary school in the 1917 reform, was made equal to katharevousa by the reform of 1964 and then reversed after 1967; and it was established as the language of education and of the state by the reform of 1976. The monotonic accent system followed in 1982.
The third aspect, αλλαγές στη διδακτέα ύλη, is where a research candidate can be genuinely specific. The curriculum is set centrally by the ministry, taught largely from a single set of state textbooks, and revised periodically, which makes each revision a public argument about what a Greek school should teach: how much ancient Greek, how history is presented, how much English and other foreign languages, how information technology is handled, and how the λύκειο is shaped around the πανελλαδικές. Two guard-rails apply. First, name the reform or the year rather than gesturing at change. Second, remember that curriculum revisions in Greece have repeatedly become political controversies, so describe the argument, name the positions, and do not deliver a verdict on which reform was right.

Το γλωσσικό ζήτημα: the landmarks

Το γλωσσικό ζήτημαTimeline from 1880 to 2000, 1888: Ψυχάρης, 1901: Ευαγγελικά, 1917: Στο δημοτικό, 1964: Μεταρρύθμιση, 1976: Στην παιδεία, 1982: Μονοτονικό188020001888Ψυχάρης1901Ευαγγελικά1917Στο δημοτικό1964Μεταρρύθμιση1976Στην παιδεία1982Μονοτονικό
Fig. 2The second aspect of the research subject is a datable history, and the dates are what turn an impression into an argument. Psycharis made demoticism a programme with Το ταξίδι μου in 1888; the Ευαγγελικά of 1901, and the Ορεστειακά two years later, took the quarrel into the streets of Athens; demotic entered the primary school in the reform of 1917 and was made equal with katharevousa in 1964, a change reversed after 1967; the reform of 1976 established demotic as the language of education and of the state; and the monotonic accent system, marked here, followed in 1982. That last date is why these notes are written with one accent and no breathings.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section C: building a 270–320-word answer from research notes and an unseen text

The unseen Greek text argues that Greek schooling has been reformed repeatedly without changing what happens in the classroom. The statement you must respond to is: «Οι μεταρρυθμίσεις στην ελληνική εκπαίδευση άλλαξαν τους νόμους αλλά όχι την τάξη.» You have researched Η Παιδεία στην Ελλάδα and covered all three aspects. Plan and open the answer.

  1. 01Read the statement for the claim it actually makes

The statement contains two propositions joined by an implied contrast: reforms changed the law, and reforms did not change classroom practice. You may agree with one and not the other, and the strongest answers usually do. Do not restate the statement as your opening sentence, which wastes twenty words of a 320-word budget; open by taking a position on it. For instance: Η διάκριση ανάμεσα στη νομοθεσία και στην πράξη είναι χρήσιμη, αλλά ισχύει άνισα για τις τρεις όψεις του θέματος.

  2. 02Allocate the three aspects across the answer before writing

Section C rewards coverage of the research subject with focus maintained throughout, so the safest architecture is one paragraph per aspect, each argued against the statement rather than described. Aspect one, the system: reforms of structure and of the examination have genuinely changed how schools operate, so here the statement is weakest. Aspect two, the language question: here the statement is at its weakest of all, because the 1976 reform did change what is spoken and written in every classroom in the country. Aspect three, the curriculum: here the statement has most force, because a revised διδακτέα ύλη taught from the same textbooks under the same πανελλαδικές can leave practice largely intact. That is a real argument, and it uses all three aspects.

  3. 03Use the unseen text where AO2 can see you using it

AO2 is worth 10 marks and rewards relevant information from the text contributing to your ideas. Quote sparingly and integrate: Όπως επισημαίνεται στο κείμενο, οι αλλαγές συχνά σταματούν στην πόρτα της αίθουσας. Then push past it with something the text does not contain, which is where AO4 lives: Ωστόσο, η μεταρρύθμιση του 1976 αποτελεί εξαίρεση, καθώς άλλαξε τη γλώσσα της ίδιας της διδασκαλίας. A sentence that both cites the text and exceeds it is doing double duty across the two grids.

  4. 04Attribute the contested part and finish with a conclusion, not a summary

Curriculum reform in Greece has repeatedly been politically contested, so name positions rather than delivering one: Ορισμένοι υποστηρίζουν ότι, whereas άλλοι θεωρούν ότι. The final sentence must answer the statement. Something like: Συνεπώς, η φράση «άλλαξαν οι νόμοι αλλά όχι η τάξη» περιγράφει με ακρίβεια τη διδακτέα ύλη, όχι όμως το γλωσσικό ζήτημα, όπου η αλλαγή υπήρξε ριζική. Notice the shape: the statement is accepted in part, rejected in part, and each part is tied to an aspect.

  5. 05Check the AO3 range as a final pass

The AO3 grid is worth 10 marks and its own guidance defines complex language for you: the pluperfect and future perfect, the passive, the subjunctive, subordination, extended sentences carrying abstract argument, and varied synonymy. Run one pass looking only for those. Have you used a passive — αποφασίστηκε, καθιερώθηκε? A subjunctive after a subordinator — παρόλο που άλλαξε ο νόμος, χωρίς να αλλάξει η πρακτική? A pluperfect — είχε ήδη επικρατήσει στην ποίηση πριν φτάσει στο σχολείο? Three targeted insertions can lift the band, and they cost fewer words than another example.

Result: Plan: opening position, then one paragraph per aspect — system (statement weak), language question (statement weakest, use 1976 and 1982), curriculum (statement strongest, attribute the political dispute) — closing with a differentiated verdict. Model opening: Η διάκριση ανάμεσα στη νομοθεσία και στην πράξη είναι χρήσιμη, αλλά ισχύει άνισα για τις τρεις όψεις του θέματος. Model closing: Συνεπώς, η φράση «άλλαξαν οι νόμοι αλλά όχι η τάξη» περιγράφει με ακρίβεια τη διδακτέα ύλη, όχι όμως το γλωσσικό ζήτημα, όπου η αλλαγή υπήρξε ριζική.

Exam focus

  • If you choose this research subject you must cover all three aspects — system, language question, curriculum — not the one you find easiest (AO4).
  • Use the system's own words: προσχολική, πρωτοβάθμια, δευτεροβάθμια, τριτοβάθμια, πανελλαδικές εξετάσεις, διδακτέα ύλη.
  • The language question is datable history. 1888, 1901, 1903, 1917, 1964, 1976, 1982 are the load-bearing years.
  • Το φροντιστήριο is not a detail; it is the feature of Greek schooling most often discussed in Greek sources.

Typical mistakes

  • Presenting the language question as a purely linguistic quarrel. It involved the state, the Church, the universities and, in 1901 and 1903, the street.
  • Saying katharevousa was ancient Greek. It was a modern, purified written variety, not the language of Plato.
  • Writing about the education system without the πανελλαδικές, which organise the whole upper secondary experience.
  • Choosing this research subject and then writing only about the language question because it has the best story.

Active revision

Draft a 300-word plan in Greek for a Paper 1 Section C answer on Η Παιδεία στην Ελλάδα, in which each of the three aspects gets a paragraph, each paragraph contains one dated fact and one attributed opinion, and the closing sentence answers a statement rather than summarising the topic. Then mark your own plan against the AO4 descriptors: is every idea supported by something specific from research, and is the focus on the research subject maintained throughout?
