文化活动: film, television, music and reading

This topic carries the second sub-theme of Edexcel Theme 2, 中国文化: 文化活动 (traditional 文化活動), which the specification exemplifies as 电影;电视;音乐和阅读 and then narrows with a qualifier that is easy to skip and expensive to ignore - 与中国文化有关, related to Chinese culture. The sub-theme is not about your cultural life in general; it is about cultural activity connected to Chinese culture, which rules out a well-prepared paragraph on your favourite Hollywood film and rewards a candidate who can talk about what people in the Chinese-speaking world watch, listen to and read. The topic is also the natural home of the AO3 range grid, because arts vocabulary is where a candidate can most easily deploy the Appendix 3 structures deliberately, and the exam-technique section makes that explicit.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is to describe a film, a programme, a singer or a book accurately and to say why you liked it, using the right nouns - 导演, 主角, 情节, 歌词, 小说 - and giving a reason rather than an adjective. A recommendation is a good exercise here: 我想推荐…, 因为…, 特别是….

higher level

The full A-Level expects a candidate to connect a cultural work to the society that produced it and to evaluate rather than review. Why do costume dramas dominate a schedule? What does a talent show reward? Why did science fiction from China start winning international prizes in the 2010s? What is 弹幕 doing to the experience of watching? Language should reach for the evaluative verbs 反映, 体现, 表现, 塑造 and for 不仅…还…, 与其说…不如说… and 正是因为…才….

文化活动 in four branches

文化活动Probability tree, 8 paths, Data: 电影 → 第五代; 电影 → 贺岁片; 电视 → 电视剧; 电视 → 综艺; 音乐 → 京剧; 音乐 → 流行; 阅读 → 科幻; 阅读 → 网文电影电视音乐阅读文化活动第五代贺岁片电视剧综艺京剧流行科幻网文
Fig. 1The sub-theme's four named areas with two concrete forms under each, so that a candidate always has somewhere specific to go. The emphasised branch is reading, because it is the one candidates prepare least and the one where the Chinese-speaking world's recent international presence - two Hugo awards for Chinese science fiction in the mid-2010s, one of them for a work on Edexcel's own prescribed list - gives the strongest evidence.

Key points

Chinese-language cinema is usually discussed as three industries rather than one, and knowing that is the first sign of a candidate who has read something. Mainland cinema, Hong Kong cinema - historically dominant in 武侠片 (wǔxiápiàn), martial-arts films, and 功夫片 (gōngfupiàn) - and Taiwanese cinema each have their own histories, and films from all three are properly inside the sub-theme, because the specification's frame is Chinese culture rather than one jurisdiction. Note too that two of Edexcel's own prescribed films are mainland and one, 天水围的日与夜 directed by 许鞍华, is from Hong Kong; the prescribed list itself models the breadth. The qualifier attached to the sub-theme, 与中国文化有关, is what makes this breadth legitimate rather than a digression. A Hong Kong martial-arts film and a mainland art film are both related to Chinese culture; a Hollywood blockbuster you enjoyed is not, however skilfully you discuss it, and an answer built on one cannot score AO4 whatever else is right about it.
The critical vocabulary that unlocks discussion is the generational one. 第五代导演 (dì-wǔ dài dǎoyǎn), the Fifth Generation directors, is the term for the film-makers who emerged in the 1980s after training at the reopened Beijing Film Academy - 张艺谋 and 陈凯歌 are the names usually cited - and their work is associated with visually striking historical subjects. 第六代 (dì-liù dài), the Sixth Generation, emerged in the 1990s with smaller, more contemporary and more urban subjects; 王小帅, the director of the prescribed 十七岁的单车, is generally placed in it. Using the generational frame lets you make a claim - 第六代更关注普通人的日常生活 - instead of merely liking a film. The generational vocabulary is also portable to other parts of the specification. The observation that the Sixth Generation turned towards ordinary urban lives connects directly to Theme 4's material on migration and the megacity, and to Theme 1's on work; a candidate who can make that link is doing what the four themes were designed to invite.
Now the practical nouns and verbs, because a discussion of film collapses without them. 导演 (dǎoyǎn) director; 主角 (zhǔjué) protagonist and 配角 (pèijué) supporting role; 演员 (yǎnyuán) actor; 情节 (qíngjié) plot; 题材 (tícái) subject matter; 镜头 (jìngtóu) shot; 配乐 (pèiyuè) score; 字幕 (zìmù) subtitles; 票房 (piàofáng) box office; 国产片 (guóchǎnpiàn) domestic film; 贺岁片 (hèsuìpiàn) a New Year release, timed for the Spring Festival holiday, which is a genuinely distinctive feature of the mainland release calendar and links this sub-theme neatly to 传统. A handful of practical nouns about how films reach an audience complete the set and are surprisingly useful: 上映 (to be released, to be showing), 影院 or 电影院 (the cinema), 首映 (the premiere), 观众 (the audience). They let you talk about a film as something distributed and watched rather than only as a text, which is the sort of concrete detail the AO4 grid calls pertinent.
The analytical move worth practising is from what a film shows to what it is doing. 与其说…不如说… - rather than saying X, it would be better to say Y - is the structure built for exactly this: 与其说这部电影是在讲一个孩子的故事, 不如说它是在讲农村教育的问题. So is 正是因为…才… - it is precisely because X that Y: 正是因为导演用了非专业演员, 影片才显得特别真实. Both belong in your active repertoire, both are on the specification's structural map, and both convert a description into a claim. The verbs that pair with them are 反映 (reflect), 表现 (portray), 塑造 (shape, characterise) and 揭示 (reveal). One caution about all four verbs. 反映 and 表现 are close and are frequently confused: 反映 is closer to reflects, implying that something in the world is shown, while 表现 is closer to portrays or performs, implying a deliberate presentation. Choosing between them rather than using one for both is a small mark of precision that the range grid can see.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section C: translation into English of a piece of film writing

Translate into English. 第六代导演和第五代很不一样. 他们的作品题材更小, 常常拍普通人的日常生活, 有的甚至用非专业演员. 与其说他们在讲故事, 不如说他们在记录. 这样的电影票房往往不高, 可是在国外的电影节上却经常得奖. 正是因为它们不追求商业效果, 才保留了一种别的片子没有的真实感.

  1. 01第六代导演和第五代很不一样

和…不一样 is the comparison-of-difference frame; 很 modifies 不一样 as a whole. Note that 第五代 stands alone with the head noun 导演 understood - Chinese ellipsis of a repeated head is normal and English must usually restore it: the Sixth Generation directors are very different from the Fifth.

  2. 02他们的作品题材更小, 常常拍普通人的日常生活, 有的甚至用非专业演员

题材 is subject matter and 更小 is a bare comparative whose standard is the previous sentence - smaller in subject matter. 拍 is the verb for shooting a film and takes the subject as its object. 有的 means some of them, an indefinite partitive pronoun. 甚至 (even) is an adverb of emphasis from the Appendix 3 list and precedes the verb. 非专业演员 is non-professional actors.

  3. 03与其说他们在讲故事, 不如说他们在记录

与其说 A 不如说 B is the comparative-preference frame: rather than saying A, it is better to say B. Both 在 markers are progressive - are telling, are recording. English will usually invert to it is less that they tell stories than that they record, or keep the Chinese order with rather than saying they tell stories, one might better say they record.

  4. 04这样的电影票房往往不高, 可是在国外的电影节上却经常得奖

这样的 is such, a demonstrative attributive. 票房 is box office and 不高 rather than 很低 is idiomatic. 往往 (as a rule, more often than not) is a frequency adverb and precedes the verb. 在…上 brackets the location; 却 is the contrastive adverb, pre-verbal, and must not be translated as a sentence-initial however without moving it in the English. 得奖 is to win an award, a verb-object compound.

  5. 05正是因为它们不追求商业效果, 才保留了一种别的片子没有的真实感

正是因为…才… is the emphatic causal frame: it is precisely because X that Y. 追求 is to pursue or seek after; 商业效果 commercial effect. 一种别的片子没有的真实感 is a stacked attributive - a kind of authenticity that other films do not have - built by nominalising a whole relative clause with 的. 真实感 is a sense of authenticity; the suffix 感 makes an abstract noun of feeling.

  6. 06Where the marks are

Three of this passage's five sentences turn on a paired structure - 和…不一样, 与其说…不如说…, 正是因为…才… - and one on the placement of 却. That is where Section C distributes its marks. A candidate who translates 却 as however and puts it at the head of the English clause has still earned the mark; one who omits it entirely has not, because the contrast between low box office and international prizes is the sentence's whole content.

Result: The Sixth Generation directors are very different from the Fifth. Their subject matter is smaller in scale: they often film the everyday lives of ordinary people, and some of them even use non-professional actors. Rather than saying that they tell stories, one might better say that they record. Films of this kind usually do not do well at the box office, yet they frequently win awards at festivals abroad. It is precisely because they do not chase commercial effect that they retain a sense of authenticity other films lack.

Exam focus

  • Treat Chinese-language cinema as three industries; the breadth is what the specification's 中国文化 frame is asking for (AO4).
  • Use the generational frame - 第五代, 第六代 - to make a claim rather than a preference (AO4).
  • Hold the technical nouns 导演, 情节, 题材, 镜头, 票房 ready; without them the discussion cannot rise above liking (AO3).
  • Convert description into claim with 与其说…不如说… and 正是因为…才… (AO3, AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Talking about a Hollywood film. The sub-theme is qualified 与中国文化有关, and an off-theme answer cannot score AO4 however fluent it is.
  • Using 电影 for both film and cinema-the-building. The building is 电影院.
  • Saying 我喜欢这个电影 with the wrong measure word. Films take 部: 这部电影.
  • Attributing every mainland film of the 1980s and 1990s to the Fifth Generation. It is a critical grouping with edges, not a census.

Active revision

用中文写一段大约 130 个字的影评, 介绍一部和中国文化有关的电影. 必须用到 导演, 题材, 情节 和 票房 中的三个, 并且使用 与其说…不如说… 或者 正是因为…才… 一次, 最后说明你推荐给谁看.

电视: what a schedule reveals, and what 弹幕 changed#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9CN0 Theme 2 中国文化 - 文化活动: 电视 (与中国文化有关)LPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

Television gives you the most describable evidence in this whole sub-theme, because a schedule is a set of choices somebody made. The categories to name are 电视剧 (diànshìjù), the television drama, which in China typically runs to dozens of episodes; 古装剧 (gǔzhuāngjù), the costume drama set in a historical or quasi-historical past, a persistently dominant genre; 都市剧 (dūshìjù), the contemporary urban drama; 综艺节目 (zōngyì jiémù), the variety or entertainment show; 真人秀 (zhēnrénxiù), reality television; and 纪录片 (jìlùpiàn), the documentary. 春晚, treated in the 传统 topic, is the single most-watched programme of the year and belongs to both sub-themes. One structural difference from British television is worth naming because it is describable rather than impressionistic: many Chinese dramas are commissioned as a single closed story of several dozen episodes rather than as a returning series, so a drama usually ends rather than being renewed. That is a fact about how the industry works and it explains a great deal about what the dramas look like.
The genuinely distinctive thing about watching in China is where and how it happens, and this is the observation that will separate your answer. Much viewing has moved to 视频网站 (shìpín wǎngzhàn), video platforms, and to 网剧 (wǎngjù), dramas made for them, and it happens on a phone. 追剧 (zhuījù) is to follow a series avidly, the equivalent of binge-watching. And 弹幕 (dànmù), literally barrage, is the practice of viewers' comments scrolling across the picture in real time, which turns a solitary viewing into a running collective conversation. 弹幕 has no British equivalent, which is exactly why describing it is high-value AO4 material: you must explain it, and explaining it is knowledge. The migration of viewing has a further consequence worth mentioning: the platforms commission their own content, so 网剧 is not simply television watched online but a distinct production category with different lengths, different budgets and often a younger intended audience. Saying that distinguishes a candidate who has watched from one who has read about it.
For analysis, ask what a genre rewards rather than whether you enjoy it. A costume drama can be discussed as a way of talking about the present at a safe distance, or as a national-heritage pleasure, or as a commercially reliable format; all three are arguments people actually make, and setting two of them against each other is analysis. 古装剧之所以受欢迎, 有人认为是因为观众喜欢历史, 也有人认为是因为这种题材比较安全 - some think costume dramas are popular because audiences like history, others because the subject matter is comparatively safe. Attribute both, then judge. The same question can be asked of variety and reality formats, and it is fresher territory. A talent show rewards visible effort and personal narrative; a travel or family format rewards ordinary domestic life made watchable. Asking what a format rewards is a transferable analytical move and it works on any genre a candidate happens to know well.
The register here is conversational and the structures should be too. 越来越多的人不看电视, 而是用手机看剧 - more and more people do not watch television but watch dramas on a phone; note 不是…而是… and note that 看剧 has largely replaced 看电视剧 in speech. 一…就… is useful for habit: 我一有空就追剧. And the evaluative frame 与其说是娱乐, 不如说是陪伴 - less entertainment than company - is the kind of sentence that makes an examiner sit up, because it is a claim about what a medium is for. Two more everyday verbs belong here. 更新 is used for a series posting its next episode - 每周更新两集, two episodes a week - which is the rhythm most viewers actually experience; and 弃剧 (to abandon a series) is the colloquial verb for giving up on one. Both are ordinary usage and both signal genuine familiarity.
Worked example

Building an argued paragraph about a medium

Write roughly 130 characters answering 弹幕为什么这么受欢迎? - why is danmu so popular? The passage must explain the practice, offer two attributed explanations and reach a judgement.

  1. 01Define before you argue

弹幕是观众发的评论, 会直接从画面上飘过去. Define in one sentence, because half your marks here depend on the examiner being sure you know what you are talking about. 发 is the verb for posting a comment. 飘过去 is verb plus directional complement - float across and away - and it is the vivid, correct verb for the motion.

  2. 02First explanation, attributed

有人认为它受欢迎是因为看视频本来是一个人的事, 而弹幕让人觉得不孤单. 本来 (originally, by nature) sets up the contrast; 而 carries it. 让人觉得 is the causative plus a perception verb: makes people feel. 不孤单 rather than 有朋友 keeps the claim modest and therefore defensible.

  3. 03Second explanation, different in kind

也有人指出, 弹幕本身已经变成了内容的一部分: 有的观众是为了看评论才看视频的. Note that this is not a variant of the first explanation but a different sort of claim - about content rather than about feeling - which is what makes the pair worth setting out. 是…的 is the emphatic frame: it is in order to read the comments that they watch.

  4. 04Judge with a comparative frame

在我看来, 弹幕与其说是评论, 不如说是一种一起看的方式. 与其说…不如说… states what the thing really is, which is a stronger move than saying whether you like it. 一起看的方式 - a way of watching together - is a compact nominalisation and the claim the whole paragraph exists to make.

  5. 05Close by connecting outward

这也解释了为什么很多年轻人一边看剧一边和网友聊天. 解释了为什么… is the connective that shows your judgement doing work: it explains something else. 网友 (online friends, fellow users) is the right noun. Ending on a consequence rather than a restatement is a habit worth building; examiners notice it.

  6. 06Why this counts as argument

The paragraph defines, attributes twice, distinguishes two kinds of explanation, judges with a frame and then makes the judgement explain something further. It is about 130 characters and contains 本来…而…, 让人觉得, 是…的, 与其说…不如说… and 一边…一边…. Neither the definition nor the judgement required a statistic, and neither could be dislodged by a follow-up question.

Result: 弹幕是观众发的评论, 会直接从画面上飘过去. 有人认为它受欢迎是因为看视频本来是一个人的事, 而弹幕让人觉得不孤单. 也有人指出, 弹幕本身已经变成了内容的一部分: 有的观众是为了看评论才看视频的. 在我看来, 弹幕与其说是评论, 不如说是一种一起看的方式. 这也解释了为什么很多年轻人一边看剧一边和网友聊天.

Exam focus

  • Name genres precisely - 电视剧, 古装剧, 综艺节目, 真人秀, 纪录片 - so that your evidence is a category and not a title (AO4).
  • Describe 弹幕 and 追剧; a practice with no British equivalent is the best AO4 material available in this sub-theme (AO4).
  • Ask what a genre rewards and attribute two competing explanations before judging (AO4).
  • Use 不是…而是…, 一…就… and 与其说…不如说… to keep the register conversational but structured (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Naming a single programme and describing its plot. The examinable content is the pattern, and the programme is only evidence for it.
  • Assuming a Chinese drama series has a British-length season. Lengths differ substantially, and mentioning that difference is itself an observation.
  • Translating 弹幕 as comments. Comments sit beneath a video; 弹幕 travels across the picture in time with it, and the difference is the point.
  • Writing 看电视 when you mean streaming on a phone. 看剧 or 刷视频 is what people say, and using the right verb signals real familiarity.

Active revision

用中文写一段大约 140 个字, 回答: 中国人看电视的方式发生了什么变化? 至少说明两个具体的变化 (例如 网剧, 弹幕, 追剧), 说明一种解释属于谁, 最后用 与其说…不如说… 提出你自己的看法.

音乐: opera, instruments and a pop industry in Mandarin#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9CN0 Theme 2 中国文化 - 文化活动: 音乐 (与中国文化有关)LPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

Music divides usefully into three layers, and a candidate who names all three sounds informed. 传统戏曲 (chuántǒng xìqǔ), traditional sung drama, of which 京剧 (jīngjù), Peking opera, is the best known form; it combines singing, speech, mime and acrobatics, uses stylised role types and elaborate painted faces, and is more often admired than watched by young audiences today - a tension worth naming. 民乐 (mínyuè), traditional instrumental music, played on instruments such as the 二胡 (èrhú), the two-stringed fiddle, the 古筝 (gǔzhēng), the plucked zither, and the 琵琶 (pípá), the pear-shaped lute. And 流行音乐 (liúxíng yīnyuè), popular music, of which the Mandarin-language industry is often called 华语流行音乐. A short historical note is worth having, because it explains the shape of the third layer. Mandarin-language popular music has long had major centres outside the mainland - Taiwan and Hong Kong in particular - so the industry is genuinely transregional, which is another instance of the specification's 中国文化 frame being wider than one jurisdiction.
The pop layer is where most candidates will actually have material, and it should be handled with the same discipline as the rest. 歌手 (gēshǒu) singer; 歌词 (gēcí) lyrics; 专辑 (zhuānjí) album; 演唱会 (yǎnchànghuì) concert; 选秀节目 (xuǎnxiù jiémù) the televised talent contest, a format that has shaped the industry substantially. Naming a widely known Mandarin-language artist such as 周杰伦 (Zhōu Jiélún) is legitimate evidence, and the interesting observation about his music is often made about the wider industry too - that it deliberately blends 中国风 (zhōngguófēng), a Chinese-styled idiom drawing on traditional melody and imagery, with contemporary pop production. One caution about naming artists: choose one you can actually say something about. A name dropped without a claim is worth nothing, whereas a single observation about how a song is put together - that it opens with a traditional instrument, or that its lyrics use classical imagery - is evidence. The rule is the same as for films: the claim, not the name, earns the mark.
That last observation is the analytical seam of this section, so mine it. The interesting question about Chinese popular music is not whether it is good but what it does with tradition. 中国风 songs quote 古筝, use classical imagery and sometimes 文言 (wényán) diction inside a pop arrangement. Is that preservation, or is it decoration? 有人认为中国风让年轻人重新接触传统, 也有人觉得它只是把传统当成一种风格 - some think it reconnects young people with tradition, others that it merely treats tradition as a style. Set them out, then decide. That is a fully formed AO4 argument and it costs four sentences. The same question applies to 戏曲 and gives you a second, sharper version of it. Peking opera is widely supported as heritage and comparatively little watched by young audiences, which raises the question of what preservation means when an art form survives as an object of respect rather than as entertainment - a question a candidate can genuinely argue about without needing specialist knowledge.
Two practical points of language. First, the verbs: 听 for listening, 唱 for singing, 弹 for plucked and keyboard instruments, 拉 for bowed ones - 拉二胡, not 弹二胡, and getting that right is a small, visible mark of real knowledge. Second, evaluating: 好听 (pleasant to listen to) is the everyday adjective, but an A-Level answer wants more - 旋律优美 (the melody is beautiful), 歌词有意思 (the lyrics are interesting), 风格独特 (the style is distinctive), 让我想起… (it reminds me of…). Each of those turns a preference into a description, and a description can be argued with. A small set of nouns completes the vocabulary and is worth having ready: 旋律 (melody), 节奏 (rhythm), 乐器 (musical instrument), 现场 (live, as in a live performance), 唱片 (a record). With those plus the four verbs you can describe almost any piece of music you are likely to want to discuss.
Worked example

Paper 2 Section A: translation into Chinese about music

Translate into Chinese. Many young people say they have never watched a whole Peking opera, but they will happily listen to a pop song that uses a guzheng. Some critics argue that this is not genuine preservation of tradition; others reply that any contact is better than none.

  1. 01Many young people say they have never watched a whole Peking opera

很多年轻人说, 他们从来没有看过一整部京剧. 从来没有…过 is the standard never-have frame: 从来 precedes, 过 marks past experience and is the aspect marker the Appendix 3 list names. 一整部 needs the measure word 部, used for films, plays and substantial works; 整 (whole) sits between the numeral and the measure word. A comma after 说 is normal Chinese punctuation for reported speech and there are no quotation marks.

  2. 02but they will happily listen to a pop song that uses a guzheng

但是很愿意听一首用了古筝的流行歌曲. 愿意 (be willing to) renders happily better than 高兴地 here. 一首 is the measure word for songs and poems. The English relative clause that uses a guzheng must become a pre-nominal attributive: 用了古筝的. Note that 了 stays inside the attributive; it marks the fact that the song has used the instrument, not a past tense.

  3. 03Some critics argue that this is not genuine preservation of tradition

有些评论者认为, 这并不是真正在保护传统. 有些 plus 评论者 attributes. 并不是 is emphatic negation - is not at all. 真正 (genuinely) is an adverb here and precedes 在保护. Rendering the English noun preservation as the Chinese verb phrase 在保护传统 is the right instinct: Chinese prefers a verb where English nominalises, and a candidate who writes 真正的保护 will produce something stiffer but not wrong.

  4. 04others reply that any contact is better than none

也有人反驳说, 有一点接触也比完全没有好. 反驳 is to rebut, a precise verb worth a mark. The comparison is 比 plus the standard plus the adjective: 比完全没有好, better than having none at all. 也 before 比 covers English any…at all. Note the word order: the standard of comparison comes before the adjective, which is the reverse of English.

  5. 05Where the points-based marks sit

The marks cluster on 从来没有…过, the measure words 部 and 首, the pre-nominal attributive 用了古筝的, 并不是 as emphatic negation, and the 比 comparison with the adjective last. Four of the five are structural. Section A's points-based scheme is unusually kind to a candidate who has drilled structures, because each correct structure is a separately awardable section of language.

Result: 很多年轻人说, 他们从来没有看过一整部京剧, 但是很愿意听一首用了古筝的流行歌曲. 有些评论者认为, 这并不是真正在保护传统; 也有人反驳说, 有一点接触也比完全没有好.

Exam focus

  • Name all three layers - 戏曲, 民乐, 流行音乐 - so the answer covers the sub-theme rather than one corner of it (AO4).
  • Use 中国风 as the analytical seam: what pop music does with tradition is a real question with two real answers (AO4).
  • Get the instrument verbs right: 拉二胡, 弹古筝, 弹琵琶 (AO3).
  • Replace 好听 with 旋律优美, 歌词有意思, 风格独特 so the judgement can be argued with (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Describing 京剧 as Chinese opera without qualification. 戏曲 is the category and 京剧 is one form within it; others include 昆曲 and 越剧.
  • Using 弹 with a bowed instrument. The 二胡 is bowed, so it is 拉.
  • Talking only about Western pop you like. The 与中国文化有关 qualifier disqualifies it.
  • Treating 中国风 as a genre with fixed boundaries. It is a stylistic tendency, and describing it as a tendency is more accurate and more defensible.

Active revision

把下面的句子翻译成中文, 注意动词搭配, 量词, 以及 不但…而且… 的位置: Many young people say they have never watched a whole Peking opera, but they will happily listen to a pop song that uses a guzheng. Some critics argue that this is not real preservation; others reply that any contact with tradition is better than none.

阅读: classics, science fiction and literature written online#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9CN0 Theme 2 中国文化 - 文化活动: 阅读 (与中国文化有关)LPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

Reading is the branch of this sub-theme candidates prepare least and where the strongest evidence is available, so it repays attention. Start with the shared reference points. 四大名著 (sì dà míngzhù), the Four Great Classical Novels - 《红楼梦》, 《西游记》, 《水浒传》 and 《三国演义》 - are known to essentially every educated speaker and are constantly adapted for television and film, which is a useful link to the earlier sections. 唐诗 (Táng shī), the poetry of the Tang dynasty, is learnt by heart at school, and 成语 (chéngyǔ), the four-character set phrases, are a living part of ordinary written Chinese rather than a museum piece. One caution about the classics: knowing the four titles is common and worth little on its own. What is worth something is one concrete observation - that 西游记 has been adapted for television more often than almost any other Chinese narrative, for instance - because an adaptation history is checkable, connects to the earlier sections, and shows the work still circulating rather than merely canonical.
Modern literature next. 鲁迅 (Lǔ Xùn), whose short story 故乡 is on Edexcel's own prescribed list, is the central figure of the early twentieth-century turn to writing in the vernacular, 白话文 (báihuàwén), rather than in classical 文言. That shift - from a written language nobody spoke to one close to speech - is one of the most consequential facts in modern Chinese culture and is worth a sentence in almost any answer about reading. 莫言 (Mò Yán) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, which is a dateable, checkable fact of exactly the kind AO4 rewards. The vernacular shift also has a consequence a candidate can use in almost any answer about language. It means that written Chinese as it is read today is, in historical terms, quite young as a written standard, and that classical constructions surviving in modern prose - 之, 所, 其, 该 - are fossils of the older system rather than ordinary grammar. That is why Appendix 3 lists them as formal register.
Then the two contemporary phenomena, both distinctive and both safe to state. Chinese science fiction, 科幻 (kēhuàn), achieved international visibility in the mid-2010s: 刘慈欣 (Liú Cíxīn) won a Hugo Award for 《三体》 in 2015 and 郝景芳 (Hǎo Jǐngfāng) won one for 《北京折叠》 in 2016 - and 北京折叠 is on Edexcel's prescribed list, so the connection is not decorative. And 网络文学 (wǎngluò wénxué), web literature, is a genuinely different publishing world in which authors serialise very long novels chapter by chapter on platforms, readers pay per instalment and comment as they go, and successful works are adapted into dramas and games. There is no close British equivalent, which makes it excellent material. Two further facts about the reading landscape are safe and useful. Audio has become a major channel, with serialised novels and non-fiction widely consumed as 有声书 and podcasts; and the classical four-character idiom, 成语, remains a live part of ordinary written style rather than an ornament, which is why the earlier advice to deploy exactly one in an essay is about proportion rather than about avoidance.
The argument to build here is about how the medium changes the writing. A serialised, paid-by-chapter, comment-driven novel is shaped by different pressures from a printed one: it rewards cliffhangers, length and responsiveness to readers. 网络文学之所以特别长, 是因为作者按章节收费, 读者的反馈也会影响后面的情节 - web literature is so long because authors are paid by the chapter and readers' feedback affects what comes next. Then evaluate, with attribution: 有人批评这种写法不够精练, 也有人认为它让文学更接近普通读者. That is a complete AO4 movement - phenomenon, mechanism, two views - in about sixty characters. The medium argument generalises usefully, which is why it is worth rehearsing. Ask of any cultural form: who pays, when do they pay, and what does that reward? Serialised paid chapters reward length and cliffhangers; a cinema ticket bought in advance rewards a strong opening weekend; a subscription platform rewards keeping you watching. Each answer is a mechanism, and mechanisms are what the AO4 grid means by analysis.
Worked example

Paper 1 Section B: a reading strategy applied to a passage about web literature

Passage: 网络文学是中国出版业里很特别的一部分. 作者一般每天更新一到两章, 读者按章节付费, 还可以在下面留言. 因为收入和长度有关, 所以很多作品非常长, 有的超过几百万字. 一位编辑指出, 这种模式的好处是作者能很快知道读者喜欢什么; 问题是, 为了留住读者, 情节常常拖得太长. 近年来, 不少网络小说被改编成电视剧和游戏, 这也让作者的收入来源变得更多. Questions: (a) How are web-literature authors paid? [1] (b) According to the editor, what is one advantage and one problem of this model? [2] (c) Explain why many web novels are extremely long. [3]

  1. 01Read the questions before the passage

Three questions, six marks, and each one names its interrogative: how, what advantage and problem, why. Underline 按章节, 编辑 and 因为 as you read, because those three are where the answers live. Reading the questions first turns a passage into a search rather than a translation, and it is the single biggest time saving available in Section B.

  2. 02(a) One mark, one fact, no elaboration

读者按章节付费 - readers pay by the chapter. 按 is the coverb meaning according to or on the basis of, from the Appendix 3 preposition list. Answer: They are paid by the chapter, by readers. Do not add the daily update or the adaptation income; the question asked how they are paid, and the extra material costs time and can introduce an error.

  3. 03(b) Two marks, and the attribution is load-bearing

一位编辑指出 signals that both halves belong to the editor. 好处是…问题是… gives them to you in parallel. Advantage: authors quickly learn what readers like. Problem: to keep readers, plots are often dragged out too long. 拖 is to drag and 拖得太长 is verb plus degree complement with 得, so the length is a result rather than an intention - keep that nuance in the English.

  4. 04(c) Three marks: the causal chain has three links

因为收入和长度有关, 所以很多作品非常长 gives you two links: income is tied to length, therefore works are long. The editor's remark supplies the third: plots are extended to retain readers. Three links, three marks. Answer: because the authors' income is linked to length, so a longer work earns more; because readers pay per chapter as they go; and because plots are deliberately drawn out to keep readers reading.

  5. 05Check against the interrogative, not the text

Re-read (c) and ask: have I explained WHY, or have I described what? A common near-miss here is an answer that says web novels are long and are serialised - which is a description of the phenomenon, not its cause. The word 因为 in the passage is the marker; if your answer does not contain a because, you have not answered a why question.

  6. 06What was actually assessed

Comprehension of 按…付费, of the parallel 好处是…问题是…, of the 因为…所以… chain and of the resultative 拖得太长 - plus English precise enough to keep drawn out rather than flattening it to long. No Chinese was written. That is Section B: read a lot of Chinese, answer in short exact English, and always match the interrogative.

Result: (a) They are paid by their readers on a per-chapter basis. (b) The editor says the advantage is that authors find out very quickly what readers like; the problem is that, in order to retain readers, plots are frequently drawn out for too long. (c) Because an author's income is tied to the length of the work, so a longer novel earns more; because readers pay chapter by chapter as the story is serialised; and because plots are deliberately extended in order to keep readers coming back.

Exam focus

  • Name the 四大名著 and one modern author; shared reference points are what cultural knowledge means here (AO4).
  • Use the 文言 to 白话文 shift as your one big structural fact about modern Chinese writing (AO4).
  • Cite the mid-2010s science-fiction awards, including the prescribed 北京折叠, as dateable evidence (AO4).
  • Explain 网络文学 by its mechanism - serialised, paid per chapter, reader-responsive - not by its length (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Listing the Four Great Classical Novels without knowing anything about any of them. One sentence about one of them is worth more than four titles.
  • Calling 网络文学 fan fiction. It is a commercial publishing sector with paid serialisation, not amateur writing.
  • Saying Chinese literature is not read abroad. Two Hugo awards in two years and a Nobel in 2012 are the counter-evidence, and they are checkable.
  • Writing 文学 when you mean 小说. 文学 is literature as a field; a novel is 小说 and takes the measure word 本 or 部.

Active revision

读一篇中文的书评或者一段中文小说 (大约 300 字), 然后用英文写三个问题: 一个细节题, 一个原因题 (三分), 一个总结题. 十二分钟内用英文回答, 最后检查每个答案是否真的回答了问题里的疑问词.

Exam technique: earning the AO3 range mark on purpose#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9CN0 Paper 2 - range of grammatical structures and vocabulary (AO3), 20 marks per essayLPPearson Edexcel 9CN0 Appendix 3 - grammar listLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

Range is worth 20 of every Paper 2 essay's 50 marks - more than the critical response grid's share of the paper in some readings, and far more than most candidates realise. It is also the most improvable of the three grids, because it responds to a checklist. Appendix 3 of the specification is that checklist: it is not background reading, it is a published list of the structures the examiners expect to see used actively and accurately. A candidate who has turned Appendix 3 into a rehearsed repertoire and deploys eight or ten of its items in a 300-character essay is doing precisely what the grid describes. It is worth adding that Appendix 3 is a floor rather than a ceiling. It states what is expected, so a candidate who uses only what is listed is meeting the expectation rather than exceeding it; but nothing on the list is optional, and a candidate missing whole categories of it - the complement family, the comparative family, the emphatic frames - has a visible gap that no amount of vocabulary will disguise.
But the grid's wording matters: it rewards a range used to produce articulate communication, not a range displayed. A 把 sentence dropped into an essay where a plain object would be natural reads as a party trick and can actually hurt the accuracy grid. So the discipline is to attach structures to jobs. Comparison needs 比…得多 and 没有…这么…. Concession needs 虽然…但是… and 尽管…仍然… and 就算…也…. Causation needs 由于, 因此, 之所以…是因为… and 正是因为…才…. Condition needs 只有…才…, 只要…就… and 如果…那么…. Emphasis needs 连…都…, 是…的 and 并不. Learn them by job, and the right one arrives when the job does. There is a diagnostic for whether a structure is doing work. Try to remove it: if the sentence still says the same thing, the structure was decoration and probably cost you accuracy for nothing. If removing it forces you into two sentences or loses a relation - a condition, a concession, an escalation - it was carrying meaning, and that is exactly what the grid means by producing articulate communication.
The second half of the range grid is vocabulary, and here the highest-yield move is precision rather than rarity. An essay that uses 影响 four times is narrower than one that distinguishes 影响 (influence), 作用 (function, role), 后果 (consequence, usually negative), 效果 (effect achieved) and 意义 (significance). Similarly 好 splits into 优点 (advantage), 好处 (benefit), 优势 (edge) and 长处 (strong point). Build these small synonym sets per theme and the essay stops repeating itself without your having to reach for anything exotic. Two more sets repay building for the four themes specifically. For change: 变化, 转变, 发展, 改革, 趋势. For scale and proportion: 比重, 规模, 程度, 范围, 比例. Together with the two sets above they cover most of what an essay on any theme needs to say, and each set takes ten minutes to learn and a term to make automatic.
Finally, a practical routine. After writing any practice essay, do a range audit: underline every structure from Appendix 3 you actually used, and count distinct items rather than instances. Fewer than six in 300 characters and the essay is probably narrow; more than twelve and it may be showing off at the cost of coherence. Then check the other direction - list the four or five jobs the essay does (compare, concede, explain, conclude) and confirm each was done with a structure rather than with a comma. The audit takes three minutes and it is the fastest route into the upper band of this grid. Do the audit on somebody else's essay too, ideally a partner's, because it is far easier to see missing range in prose you did not write. Swap essays, underline the Appendix 3 items, count the distinct ones, and then name the four jobs each essay performs. Twenty minutes of that is worth more than an hour of solitary rewriting.
Worked example

A flat paragraph rewritten for range, structure by structure

Here is a paragraph that says everything it needs to and would score in the middle of the AO3 range grid. Rewrite it so the same content is carried by Appendix 3 structures, and audit the result.

  1. 01The flat original

网络文学很受欢迎. 它很长, 因为作者按章节收费. 有人说它不是文学, 因为写得不好. 但是很多人喜欢看. 我觉得它也是文学. Everything here is accurate and comprehensible. It uses 因为 twice, 但是 once, and nothing else. That is roughly two distinct items of range in 60 characters, and the accuracy grid will reward it while the range grid will not.

  2. 02Job one - state the phenomenon with emphasis, not with 很

网络文学之所以这么受欢迎, 并不只是因为它便宜. 之所以…是因为… inverts the causal order so the phenomenon leads, which reads far more like written Chinese. 并不只是 combines emphatic negation with restriction and immediately promises the reader a second reason. Two distinct Appendix 3 items in one sentence, both doing a job.

  3. 03Job two - explain the mechanism with a causal chain

由于作者按章节收费, 作品的长度就和收入直接相关, 因此很多小说动辄几百万字. 由于 is the formal 因为 and belongs at the head. 就 links the consequence. 因此 concludes the chain. 动辄 (readily, at the drop of a hat) is an adverb worth having for exactly this sort of quantity claim, and it avoids committing you to a number.

  4. 04Job three - concede, properly

尽管有人批评这些作品写得不够精练, 读者的数量仍然在增长. 尽管…仍然… is the concessive pair; 写得不够精练 is a degree complement with 得 plus the negative 不够. Conceding with a structure rather than with 但是 is the single clearest signal to the range grid that you are in control.

  5. 05Job four - judge, conditionally

在我看来, 只要一部作品能让读者思考, 它就是文学; 至于形式是印在纸上还是发在网上, 并不重要. 只要…就… is the condition. 至于 (as for) introduces a shift of topic, a genuinely written-register connective. 是…还是… is the alternative question used as a nominal. 并不重要 closes with emphatic negation.

  6. 06Why this counts as argument

Audit: 之所以…是因为…, 并不只是, 由于, 就, 因此, 动辄, 尽管…仍然…, 得 complement, 不够, 只要…就…, 至于, 是…还是…, 并不 - thirteen distinct Appendix 3 items in about 130 characters, and every one of them attached to a job the paragraph actually needed. The content did not change. Only the structures did, and with them the range grid.

Result: 网络文学之所以这么受欢迎, 并不只是因为它便宜. 由于作者按章节收费, 作品的长度就和收入直接相关, 因此很多小说动辄几百万字. 尽管有人批评这些作品写得不够精练, 读者的数量仍然在增长. 在我看来, 只要一部作品能让读者思考, 它就是文学; 至于形式是印在纸上还是发在网上, 并不重要.

Exam focus

  • Treat Appendix 3 as a published checklist of what will be rewarded, not as background (AO3).
  • Attach structures to jobs - comparison, concession, causation, condition, emphasis - so the right one arrives naturally (AO3).
  • Widen vocabulary by precision: 影响 / 作用 / 后果 / 效果 / 意义 rather than one word four times (AO3).
  • Run a three-minute range audit on every practice essay: distinct structures used, and jobs done structurally (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Inserting a 把 or 被 sentence where it is not natural. It reads as display, and an unnatural structure damages the accuracy grid.
  • Counting instances rather than distinct structures. Five uses of 因为 is one item of range, not five.
  • Assuming range means long sentences. A short 连…都… sentence is range; a rambling one joined by commas is not.
  • Learning Appendix 3 as a reading list. The specification says the structures must be used actively and accurately in the examination.
