Individual research project

The individual research project is the second part of Paper 3 and carries 35 of the paper's 60 marks - a presentation of up to two minutes worth 5 marks, all AO4, followed by nine to ten minutes of discussion worth 30 marks, split AO1 10, AO3 10 and AO4 10. Students identify a subject or key question of personal interest relating to a country or countries where German is spoken, select relevant information in German from a range of sources including the internet, and analyse and summarise their findings in order to present and discuss them. These notes cover choosing and narrowing the subject, the source and Candidate Record form rules exactly as the specification states them, how to build a two-minute presentation of findings rather than of facts, how to survive ten minutes of questioning with no notes but the form, and what teachers may and may not do to help.

basic level

There is no individual research project in AS German (7661): its speaking test consists of the discussion of two sub-themes, each based on a stimulus card, in 12 to 14 minutes with 15 minutes of preparation. The research project is an A-level-only requirement.

higher level

At A-level the project is worth 35 of the 60 marks in Paper 3 - almost eighteen per cent of the whole qualification. The specification requires a subject or key question relating to a German-speaking country, sources in German including at least one online source, and findings that are analysed and summarised rather than merely reported.

Fig. 1The emphasised stage is where projects are won and lost. Everything before it is preparation; everything after it is delivery - and a project that reaches the presentation with facts instead of findings cannot be rescued in the room.

Key points

The specification is precise about what you must choose: a subject OR a key question that interests you and that relates to a country or countries where German is spoken. It may be linked to one of the themes or sub-themes, or to one of the works - with one prohibition: you must not base your research on the same literary text or film that you write about in Paper 2. Within a school or college, each student should choose a different subject; where more than one chooses the same general area, the title and the approach must differ. The A-level Content Advisory Board has published illustrative examples of research topics, which your teacher can point you to.
The most consequential decision is narrowing. Die Geschichte Berlins is not a project; it is a library. Der Umgang der Stadt Leipzig mit den Gebäuden der Staatssicherheit seit 1990 is a project, because it has a place, a period, an object and an implied question. Apply four filters to any candidate subject. Ort: which country, city or region? Zeitraum: which years? Gegenstand: which specific institution, group, practice or debate? Und Frage: what is genuinely in dispute or unclear about it? If the fourth filter yields nothing, you have a topic to describe rather than a question to research - and describing produces exactly the narration that the discussion marks punish.
Turn the subject into a question that can be answered but not in one sentence. Good shapes in German: Wie hat sich ... seit ... verändert? Warum ist ... in ... umstritten? Welche Rolle spielt ... für ...? Inwiefern hat ... die Erwartungen erfüllt? Poor shapes: anything answerable with yes or no, anything requiring statistics you cannot obtain, and anything where the German-speaking connection is decorative rather than structural. Note that the title you submit may be in German or English and your teacher may correct its language - one of the few forms of help the specification explicitly permits.
Two practical constraints shape the choice more than students expect. First, the discussion lasts nine to ten minutes, so your subject must be capable of sustaining a real conversation - the specification says the sources must be capable of leading to findings that will form the basis of a discussion of that length. A subject with one finding runs out after three minutes. Second, you must work in German: choose something on which German-language material is abundant and accessible at your level, which in practice means contemporary social, cultural and political subjects, regional and local history, and anything covered by German, Austrian or Swiss public broadcasters, quality newspapers and museums.
Worked example

Narrowing a subject into a key question

A student says: „Ich möchte etwas über die Umwelt in Deutschland machen." Narrow it through the four filters into a workable key question.

  1. 01Filter one: place

Deutschland is a country of eighty million people; the project needs a location where something specific happened. Ask: is there a region, a city or a named site where the environmental question is visible? Die Lausitz, where lignite mining is being wound down, gives a place with an archive, a local press and a live debate.

  2. 02Filter two: period

Seit dem Kohleausstiegsbeschluss - since the decision to phase out coal - gives a period with a beginning, which means change can be described rather than merely described. A period without a starting point produces a survey; a period with one produces a story with a shape.

  3. 03Filter three: object

Not the environment but a specific object: der Strukturwandel in der Lausitz - what happens to jobs, towns and identity when an industry closes. Now the project has something you can actually find sources about, including regional newspapers, broadcasters and municipal documents.

  4. 04Filter four: the dispute

What is genuinely contested? Whether the promised new jobs materialise, whether the transition money reaches the region, and whether people who spent their lives in mining feel that their work is being retrospectively condemned. Three disputes - which means at least three findings, which means a ten-minute discussion.

  5. 05Write the question and test it

Test it: not answerable in one sentence, requires German-language sources, plainly relates to a German-speaking country, and cannot be answered with yes or no. It passes.

Ort: Lausitz. Zeitraum: seit dem Ausstiegsbeschluss. Gegenstand: Arbeitsplätze, Abwanderung, regionale Identität. Streitpunkte: Kommen die versprochenen Arbeitsplätze? Erreichen die Mittel die Region? Wird die eigene Lebensleistung entwertet?

Exam focus

  • Narrow by place, period, object and question; a subject that fails the fourth filter cannot sustain ten minutes (AO4).
  • Check that your German-language sources are abundant BEFORE committing to the subject (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Researching the same film or text used in Paper 2, which the specification prohibits.
  • Choosing a subject so broad that the discussion becomes a general knowledge quiz you cannot win.

Sources and the Candidate Record form#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7662 4.6 Paper 3: Speaking, part two - Candidate Record formLPAQA 7662 3.5 Individual research project

Key points

The rules are exact and worth knowing precisely, because they are administrative marks you can lose without ever opening your mouth. You provide in advance, on the Candidate Record form, a list of headings indicating the scope of your research and the sources used. Apart from the names of published sources, any headings must be in English. You must use at least TWO sources, and at least one of them must be an ONLINE source. Apart from the two required sources, any remaining sources and headings must not exceed 80 words. Sources may be visual, audio or written, in any combination, and they must be capable of leading to findings that will form the basis of a nine to ten minute discussion. During part two you may consult ONLY the completed form - no other notes at all.
That last rule is the one that shapes preparation. Since the form is the only thing you may look at, design it as a memory aid rather than as a bureaucratic exercise: headings that name your findings will prompt you, headings that name topics will not. Within the word limit, prefer Findings on job creation since the coal decision to Employment - the first sentence reminds you what you concluded, the second reminds you only what you looked at. Remember that the headings must be in English apart from the names of published sources, so the German titles of newspapers, broadcasters, museums and documents stay in German and do not need translating.
Choose sources that differ in KIND, not only in author, because a discussion is much easier when you can compare. A regional newspaper and a national one will report the same local dispute differently. A broadcaster's documentary gives you voices; a municipal or federal document gives you figures and dates; a museum or archive page gives you historical depth; an interview or a discussion forum gives you the language people actually use. Two sources is the minimum, but a project with four or five of different kinds produces the comparisons that fill ten minutes: Die Lokalzeitung berichtet ... , während der Bericht der Landesregierung ... .
Record as you go, in German, and record findings rather than facts. For each source, note: what kind of source it is, when it was produced, what it claims, and what it does NOT tell you. That last column is what lets you answer the hardest question in the discussion - what were the limits of your research? - and it is also honest scholarship. And take the vocabulary from your sources as you read: a project on structural change hands you der Strukturwandel, die Abwanderung, die Fördermittel, der Tagebau, die Rekultivierung, and using the field's own words is one of the clearest AO3 signals available in the whole exam.
Worked example

Drafting the Candidate Record form

Your key question is „Wie erleben die Menschen in der Lausitz den Strukturwandel nach dem Kohleausstieg?" You have used a regional newspaper online, a broadcaster's documentary, a state-government report and a museum exhibition page. Draft the form.

  1. 01Put the two required sources first and name them properly

The names of published sources stay in German - the newspaper's title, the broadcaster's name, the title of the report. Those names do not count against the English-only rule, and identifying them precisely is what makes the form credible.

  2. 02Make at least one source explicitly online

At least one of the two required sources must be online, so lead with the online regional newspaper and make that clear in the wording. Do not leave the examiner or the moderator guessing which source satisfies the rule.

  3. 03Write the headings as findings, in English

Not Employment but Findings: promised jobs slower than announced. Not Interviews but Voices of former miners: pride and resentment. Each heading is a prompt that will restart your memory if you dry up, which is precisely what you need from the only document you may consult.

  4. 04Count the words beyond the two required sources

Everything after the two required sources - the additional sources and all headings - must stay within 80 words. Draft freely, then cut ruthlessly: articles, adjectives and repeated nouns go first, and telegraphic English is entirely acceptable on a form of this kind.

  5. 05Add one heading that names a limitation

Limits: no access to company figures; all sources post-2019. This does two things - it is honest, and it gives you a prepared answer to the question examiners very often ask about the boundaries of your research, which candidates otherwise answer badly.

Result: Sources (required): (1) online regional newspaper, Lausitzer Rundschau - reporting on job creation and funding. (2) documentary, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk - interviews with former miners. Additional sources and headings: (3) state government report on structural change; (4) museum exhibition page on the Tagebau landscape. Headings: Scope: Lusatia since the coal phase-out decision. Findings: promised jobs slower than announced. Voices of former miners: pride and resentment. Funding: how much reaches the region. Landscape: recultivation of the mines. Limits: no company figures; sources post-2019.

Exam focus

  • Write headings that name findings, since the form is the only thing you may consult during part two (AO4).
  • Use at least two sources of different KINDS, at least one online, so that comparison is possible (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing the headings in German; apart from the names of published sources they must be in English.
  • Exceeding the 80-word limit for the remaining sources and headings beyond the two required sources.

§ 03

The two-minute presentation#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7662 4.6 Paper 3: Speaking, part two - presentationLPAQA 7662 4.7 Assessment criteria - research-based topic presentation

Key points

The presentation lasts UP TO two minutes and is worth 5 marks, all of them AO4. The specification says it should cover some key findings emerging from the research, and that it is the QUALITY of those findings rather than their quantity that determines the mark - the descriptor for the top mark asks simply for thorough knowledge and understanding of the area of study evident in the presentation. Two minutes is roughly 250 to 280 spoken words in German at a natural pace. That is very little, which is why the presentation must consist of findings and not of background.
The shape that works has four parts. Die Befunde, three of them, each in two or three sentences and each with its evidence attached. Und ein Schlusssatz that answers the question and names its limit. No introduction about why the topic interests you, no history of the region, no apology for what you could not find.
A finding is not a fact, and the difference decides the mark. The finding names sources, states a relationship between them, and draws a conclusion. Every one of your three findings should have that shape, and the verbs that carry it are festgestellt, aufgefallen, verglichen, daraus schließe ich, das deutet darauf hin.
Deliver it, do not read it. You have only the Candidate Record form in front of you, so the presentation must be genuinely learned - but learned as structure rather than as a script, because a recited text sounds recited and the discussion that follows will expose it immediately. Rehearse from the form's headings alone, aloud, ten or fifteen times, letting the wording vary. Time yourself: going over two minutes means the examiner will interrupt, and the last thing you say - your conclusion - is the thing you will lose.
Worked example

Building the two-minute presentation

Your key question is the Lusatia one, and your three findings concern the pace of job creation, the gap between local and official accounts, and the emotional dimension of the transition. Draft the presentation.

  1. 01Open with the question, not with yourself

Twelve words, and the examiner now knows exactly what is coming. Compare with a thirty-word opening about why you find the region interesting, which tells them nothing they can credit.

  2. 02Name the sources in one sentence

Auswerten - to evaluate or analyse - is the right verb, and it is stronger than gelesen because it claims analysis.

  3. 03Give finding one with its evidence

A relationship between two sources, not a claim from one.

  4. 04Give findings two and three, keeping the same shape

Note werde, Konjunktiv I, reporting what the miners say.

  5. 05Close by answering the question and naming a limit

The answer, then the limit - which also hands the examiner a natural first question.

Exam focus

  • Present three findings with their evidence, not a survey of the topic; quality of findings determines the mark (AO4).
  • Rehearse from the form's headings alone so the delivery is structured but not recited (AO1/AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Spending the first thirty seconds on background, which leaves seventy-five per cent of the time for one finding.
  • Overrunning two minutes and being cut off before the conclusion.

§ 04

The nine to ten minute discussion#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7662 4.6 Paper 3: Speaking, part two - discussionLPAQA 7662 4.7 Assessment criteria - research-based topic discussion

Key points

The discussion carries 30 marks and three assessment objectives, and knowing what each rewards changes how you speak. AO1, 10 marks, is fluency and development: delivery at a natural pace, ideas and opinions developed INDEPENDENTLY of prompts, and engaging well with the discussion. AO3, 10 marks, is language: a wide range of vocabulary and complex language, knowledge of idiom, highly accurate grammar, good pronunciation and intonation. AO4, 10 marks, is critical response: thorough knowledge from the research carried out, consistently selecting relevant information to support arguments and using appropriate evidence to justify conclusions. Note what AO1 implies - an answer that stops as soon as the question is answered forfeits marks, because development independent of prompts is what the descriptor asks for.
The predictable question types are worth rehearsing individually. Warum haben Sie dieses Thema gewählt? - answer with the question's interest, not with your biography. - this is a research question and rewards a comparison. Was hat Sie überrascht? - the single best question you can be asked, because a surprise is by definition a finding. Was würden Sie anders machen? - name a source you could not obtain and what it would have told you. Und die schwierigste: Was folgt daraus? - which asks you to generalise beyond your case, carefully.
Three moves carry ten minutes. First, always attach a source to a claim: Laut dem Bericht der Landesregierung ...; In der Dokumentation sagt ein ehemaliger Bergmann ...; Die Lokalzeitung berichtet dagegen ... . Second, compare rather than assert: comparison generates speech naturally and demonstrates evaluation. Third, develop without being prompted - answer, then add the consequence or the qualification: ... , was insofern erstaunlich ist, als ...; ... , allerdings gilt das nur für ... . Those two connectives alone will add thirty seconds of creditable speech to any answer.
And prepare for what happens when you do not know. The honest German is short and much better than invention: Das kann ich nicht sicher sagen; dazu habe ich keine belastbaren Zahlen gefunden. Then redirect to what you did find: Was ich sagen kann, ist ... . Never invent a statistic, a date or a source in the discussion - it is the one thing that cannot be recovered from, and an examiner who knows the field will notice. Equally, do not answer a question about your research with a general opinion: the AO4 descriptor speaks of knowledge acquired FROM THE RESEARCH CARRIED OUT, so an answer that could have been given without doing any research cannot earn it.
Worked example

Turning a narration question into a findings answer

The examiner asks: „Erzählen Sie mir etwas über die Lausitz." This invites narration, which scores poorly. Build an answer that converts it into findings without appearing to dodge the question.

  1. 01Give the minimum context in two sentences

Refusing context altogether looks evasive; two sentences is enough and buys you the right to move on.

  2. 02Pivot explicitly to your research

The pivot is polite, honest and completely legitimate - and it converts a narration question into your prepared ground in one sentence.

  3. 03Deliver one finding with sources attached

Two named sources, one relationship, one conclusion.

  4. 04Develop without being asked

Insofern ... als is the developing connective, and the distinction between facts and selection is a genuinely analytical point.

  5. 05Hand back with a limit, inviting the next question

Naming the gap is honest, demonstrates research awareness, and steers the examiner towards a question you can answer well.

Exam focus

  • Develop every answer one step beyond the question; AO1 rewards development independent of prompts (AO1).
  • Attach a named source to every factual claim; AO4 rewards evidence from the research carried out (AO4).

Typical mistakes

  • Answering research questions with general opinion, which cannot earn the research-based AO4 marks.
  • Inventing a figure when asked for one; say what you could not establish and redirect to what you found.

§ 05

Rules, limits and rehearsal#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7662 4.6 Paper 3: Speaking - conduct of the assessmentLPAQA 7662 3.5 Individual research project

Key points

Know what your teacher is and is not allowed to do, because misunderstanding it produces either a weak project or a compromised one. Teachers MAY suggest subjects, discuss and advise on the title including its language, correct the language of the title, tell you whether a provisional title will meet the assessment criteria, suggest kinds of source, advise on research technique and on storing and assimilating what you find, set deadlines and monitor your progress, and give general advice about the kind of language you might use. Teachers MUST NOT provide material designed for your project, download or hand you specific sources or extracts, give specific advice on the language of your presentation and discussion beyond the title, give feedback on your notes, drafts or preparatory work, or give feedback on a practice presentation beyond telling you if it exceeds two minutes.
The distinction the specification draws is between general advice, which a teacher would give to the whole class and which applies to all projects, and specific advice, tailored to your project. That means you must find your own sources, write your own presentation and rehearse it without linguistic correction. It also means the responsibility for the German is entirely yours - which is a reason to build the project's vocabulary early, from the sources themselves, rather than hoping to be corrected later.
Two further procedural facts. The test as a whole runs 21 to 23 minutes including five minutes of supervised preparation for part one, and part two - your project - runs from the two-minute presentation into a nine to ten minute discussion. Speaking assessments fall in a five-week window in April and May; they are conducted by the centre or by a visiting examiner, are recorded complete and unedited, and are marked by an AQA examiner. And a rule that quietly protects you: the stimulus cards offered in part one avoid the subject of your research project, so you cannot be asked about the same material twice.
Rehearse properly, because this is the only part of the qualification where preparation is almost entirely under your control. Three routines. First, present to a timer, from the form's headings only, until two minutes is comfortable and the conclusion always survives. Second, have someone - anyone, including someone who speaks no German - ask you the predictable questions in a random order, and answer aloud; the point is retrieval under pressure, not correction. Third, record yourself and listen for the AO1 failure mode: answers that stop when the question is answered. Every time you hear one, replay it and add a sentence beginning was insofern erstaunlich ist, als or allerdings gilt das nur für - and after twenty repetitions you will do it without thinking.
Worked example

A four-week rehearsal protocol

Your speaking test is four weeks away, the research is done and the form is drafted. Design the rehearsal schedule and justify each element.

  1. 01Week one: fix the form and the three findings

Finalise the Candidate Record form, check the 80-word limit, and write out your three findings in full German sentences ONCE. Writing them once fixes the vocabulary; writing them repeatedly produces a script, which is the thing you must not deliver.

  2. 02Week two: the presentation against the clock

Six timed runs from the headings alone. Record the time and note which finding disappears when you run long - that is the one to compress. By the end of the week the conclusion should survive every run, because it is the sentence that carries the AO4 mark.

  3. 03Week three: hostile questioning

Three sessions of ten minutes with someone asking the predictable questions out of order, plus one question you have not anticipated. Answer aloud, without notes beyond the form. The objective is retrieval speed, and it is trained only by doing it.

  4. 04Week four: the AO1 drill

Record two full sessions. Listen back with one instruction: mark every answer that stopped as soon as the question was answered. Then redo those answers, adding a development clause each time. This single drill targets the descriptor that most candidates lose marks on.

  5. 05The last two days: nothing new

No new sources, no new findings, no rewriting. Read the form, say the three findings aloud once a day, and rest your voice. A project changed in the last forty-eight hours is a project you have not rehearsed.

Result: Woche 1: Formular fertigstellen, 80-Wörter-Grenze prüfen, drei Befunde einmal ausformulieren.

Exam focus

  • Build your own project vocabulary from your sources; no one may correct the language of your presentation (AO3).
  • Rehearse retrieval under questioning, not recitation; AO1 measures development independent of prompts (AO1).

Typical mistakes

  • Expecting a teacher to correct the German of the presentation, which the specification does not permit beyond the title.
  • Rehearsing only the presentation; ten of the twelve minutes are discussion, and that is where 30 of the 35 marks are.
