The shift from analogue (photochemical film) to digital technology is the most far-reaching transformation in cinema since the coming of sound, and the specification treats it as a major area of study and a live critical debate. In POST-PRODUCTION, digital non-linear editing and computer-generated imagery (CGI) and other digital effects have transformed how films are cut and what images they can contain. In DISTRIBUTION, films now travel as digital files and stream over the internet rather than as reels of film. In EXHIBITION, cinemas project from digital files and audiences increasingly watch on digital home and mobile screens. Because the change is so total - from capture to viewing - its effects are visible everywhere in contemporary cinema.
The impact of the digital revolution is not only technical but industrial and cultural. Digital tools have dramatically lowered the cost and difficulty of making films, so that far more people can now produce, edit and distribute film - a democratisation of filmmaking that has expanded who gets to make cinema and what kinds of films get made. At the same time, digital effects have enabled ever more elaborate spectacle in big-budget cinema, and digital distribution (especially streaming) has reshaped the whole business of how films reach audiences and how they are financed. The digital revolution is also a genuine critical debate, which is why the specification treats it as a matter for evaluation, not just description. Whether digital capture has changed the aesthetic of cinema for better, for worse, or simply differently, is part of the wider debate.
For the analyst, digital production means asking how a film's cinematography relates to the possibilities and look of digital capture. Related techniques include digital compositing (seamlessly combining multiple image layers, so an actor filmed against a green screen can appear in a computer-built world), motion capture (recording an actor's movement and performance to animate a digital character), and digital manipulation of every kind. These tools have vastly expanded the visual possibilities of cinema, especially in big-budget spectacle.
Digital effects have reshaped mainstream cinema in particular. The blockbuster's scale of spectacle - its vast battles, impossible creatures and destroyed cities - depends on CGI, and whole genres (superhero, epic fantasy, disaster and much science fiction) have been enabled or expanded by it. Digital effects can also be invisible, used not for spectacle but to fix, enhance or subtly alter ordinary scenes - removing an unwanted object, adjusting a sky, multiplying a small crowd - so that even 'realistic' films are often digitally constructed to a degree audiences never notice. Recognising both the spectacular and the invisible uses of digital effects is part of understanding contemporary film.
Digital effects raise a sharp question about film's relationship to reality, which is central to the debate. Photochemical cinema was rooted in photography: its images, whatever their content, were traces of things that existed in front of a camera. Digital images can be created entirely within a computer, with no photographed origin at all, and photographed images can be altered without limit. This loosens film's traditional bond to the real - the sense that a film image is evidence of something that was really there - and some theorists argue it marks a profound change in the nature of the medium. Whether this is a liberation of cinema's imaginative power or a loss of its documentary integrity is a genuine debate.

Digital distribution and exhibition connect to the theme of democratisation and its limits. On one hand, digital distribution can widen access: independent and low-budget filmmakers can reach audiences online without a major distributor, and viewers worldwide can access a vast range of films. On the other hand, the dominance of a few large platforms, and their control over what is promoted and recommended, can concentrate rather than democratise power over what audiences see. So the distribution revolution, like the rest, is double-edged - expanding access in some ways while raising new concerns about gatekeeping and the health of cinema culture.

This is the evaluative maturity - not just knowing what changed, but weighing what it means - that the study of the digital revolution is designed to develop.
