The line of alignment (plumb line)
A dancer cannot hold a balance on one leg: they wobble and drop the hip. Using alignment, diagnose the likely cause and the correction.
In a stable one-leg balance the supporting hip, knee and ankle should stack under the centre of gravity; dropping the hip means the pelvis has tilted and the weight has fallen off the supporting line.
The likely cause is a lack of pelvic stability - the core and gluteal muscles are not holding the pelvis level over the supporting leg, so the weight slides sideways.
Level the pelvis, engage the deep core and the gluteal muscles of the supporting side, and lengthen up through the spine so the weight sits directly over the supporting foot.
Test the correction in movement - rising to and from the balance - to confirm the alignment holds, not just in the held pose.
Result: The failing balance is diagnosed as a pelvic-alignment fault and corrected by levelling the pelvis and stacking the weight over the supporting leg - showing how alignment gives a systematic way to solve technical problems.

Joint types and their actions
A dancer rises onto the balls of both feet with straight legs and turned-out thighs, arms lifting out to the sides. Describe this in precise joint-action terms.
Rising onto the balls of the feet is plantarflexion at both ankles (a rise to demi-pointe).
The straight legs are in extension at the knees; the turned-out thighs are outward rotation at the hip joints (turnout).
Lifting the arms out to the sides is abduction at the shoulder joints, moving the limbs away from the body's midline.
The whole action: a rise to demi-pointe (ankle plantarflexion) on extended, outwardly rotated legs, with the arms abducted at the shoulders - precise, analysable terminology.
Result: The everyday description becomes precise anatomical language - plantarflexion, extension, outward rotation, abduction - the accurate terminology that AO3 rewards and that AO4 analysis relies on.

Major muscle groups and their actions
A dancer performs a jump from two feet, pushing off the floor and pointing the feet in the air, then landing softly. Explain the main muscle work in the take-off and the landing.
To push off, the quadriceps extend the knees and the gluteals extend the hips, driving the body up; the gastrocnemius and soleus plantarflex the ankles for the final push through the feet.
The pointed feet are held by the calf muscles (plantarflexion), and the core stabilises the torso so the body stays aligned in flight.
On landing the same muscles work eccentrically (lengthening while contracting) to absorb the force - the quadriceps and calves control the descent through the feet, ankles and knees so the landing is soft, not jarring.
This controlled, rolling landing through the whole foot with bent knees protects the joints - a clear example of anatomy underpinning safe technique.
Result: The jump is explained through its muscle work - quadriceps, gluteals and calves powering the take-off and controlling the landing - showing how muscle knowledge explains both performance quality and safe practice.

The physical skills for dance
A choreography asks a dancer to hold a slow, high side extension of the leg, then balance on one leg before travelling into a series of jumps. Which physical skills does this demand, and why?
Holding a high leg to the side needs flexibility (to reach the range), extension (to lengthen and hold the line) and strength with control (to sustain it steadily, not let it drop or shake).
Balancing on one leg needs alignment (stacking the weight over the supporting leg), balance and core strength to stay stable and still.
The travelling jumps need strength and power to take off, coordination to time the arms and legs, and control to land safely.
Sustaining all of this with full quality to the end of the phrase - and the whole dance - depends on stamina; without it the later jumps will lose height and precision.
Result: The phrase is shown to draw on almost the whole set of physical skills, with stamina underpinning them all - demonstrating why balanced development of every physical skill matters for performance.

The stages of a safe warm-up
A dancer arrives, immediately holds deep static stretches to 'loosen up', then launches into fast jumps, and leaves as soon as the rehearsal ends. Identify the safety faults and correct the routine.
Deep static stretching from cold, before any pulse-raising, risks straining unwarmed muscles; stretching should follow pulse-raising and mobilisation.
Going straight into fast jumps skips the progressive build-up (mobilisation and dance-specific preparation), loading cold joints and muscles suddenly.
Leaving immediately skips the cool-down, so the pulse is not lowered gradually and no maintenance stretching is done, increasing stiffness and soreness.
Warm up progressively (pulse-raise, mobilise, stretch, dance-specific), then perform, then cool down (gradual lowering plus static stretches) - and support it with hydration and rest.
Result: The unsafe routine is corrected into a progressive warm-up and proper cool-down, showing how safe-practice principles turn a risky preparation into one that protects the dancer.
