তরুণ ও রাজনীতি: politics and young people

This topic is sub-theme 3.2.2.2 of AQA 7637, Politics and young people in the Bengali-speaking world, inside theme 3.2.2. Its three bullet aspects are young people and their engagement with politics, priorities for youth politics, and values and ideals. The platform's topic id is political-life-2. The sub-theme is easier to write about in Bengali than in most languages for one reason: in Bangladesh, students have been at the centre of every political turning point of the last seventy-five years, from the Language Movement of 1952 to the movement of 2024, which means the claim that young people matter politically is not an aspiration here but a documented historical pattern. That advantage comes with a hazard. Because the pattern is so strong, it invites generalisation - young people are political, young people want change - and generalisation about tens of millions of individuals is precisely what an examiner will not credit. The exam technique this topic carries is therefore evidence rather than assertion: how to write about a whole generation using dated events, named institutions and attributed claims, and how to give the personal reaction the multi-skill task requires in a form that is still an argument.

basic level

In the first year, learn the sequence of dated events in which students and young people have been central, and learn the vocabulary of political participation. Learn to write a sentence about a group that does not claim to speak for all of it - অনেকে, a good many; একটি অংশ, a section; কেউ কেউ, some. Those qualifiers are the difference between a claim and a slogan.

higher level

The full A-Level expects you to distinguish what young people did, which is documented, from what young people think, which is not - unless somebody surveyed them and you can name who. It also expects you to notice that a generation is not one thing: the priorities of a rural school-leaver, an urban university student and a British-born Bengali speaker in Tower Hamlets are different, and an answer that treats them as one has flattened its own subject.

Three routes into politics

Fig. 1Engagement is not one thing, and an argument about whether young people are political depends entirely on which route is being counted. The non-party branch is set in heavier ink because it is the one that has grown most in the last decade and the one whose growth is itself the live argument between commentators and party organisers.

Key points

In Bangladesh the political importance of students is not a claim but a sequence, and the sequence is the single most useful thing a candidate can memorise for this sub-theme. Students were the actors in the Language Movement demonstrations of 21 February 1952; in the education movement of 1962; in the mass upsurge of 1969; in the events of 1971; in the movement that ended military rule in 1990; in the Shahbag protests of 2013; in the road-safety protests of 2018 that followed the deaths of two students in a traffic collision in Dhaka; and in the movement of July and August 2024 that began over public-service recruitment quotas and ended with a change of government. Every one of those has a year and a documented character. A student who writes বাংলাদেশে ছাত্ররা বরাবরই রাজনীতিতে সক্রিয় and then gives four of those dates has made a claim and supported it in two sentences.
Engagement runs through three quite different channels, and distinguishing them is the analytical move that lifts an answer. The first is the party channel: voting, party membership and the youth and student wings that every major party maintains. The second is the institutional-campus channel: student unions, hall politics and university committees. The third, and the one that has grown most in the last decade, is the non-party channel: issue movements, civil-society organisations, and online organising, which reaches people who would not join a party and which has repeatedly produced mobilisation faster than any party structure could. The 2018 and 2024 movements in Bangladesh both began outside party structures, which is itself an argument about where youth politics now lives - an argument made by many commentators and contested by party organisers.
West Bengal's picture is different and belongs to Indian institutions. The voting age in India was lowered from twenty-one to eighteen by constitutional amendment in the late 1980s, and the Election Commission of India runs registration drives aimed at first-time voters, including an annual National Voters' Day observed since 2011. Student and youth wings of the state's parties are organised and active; college and university union elections in the state, however, have been held irregularly in recent years, which is itself the subject of public argument between parties and student organisations. Alongside party politics sit the same non-party channels - environmental campaigning, campus and city issue movements, and online organising - and, distinctively for a border state, questions of citizenship and documentation that have mobilised young people in ways that cut across party lines.
The vocabulary of participation is compact and recurs constantly: সম্পৃক্ততা, involvement; অংশগ্রহণ, participation; ভোটাধিকার, the right to vote; প্রথমবারের ভোটার, first-time voter; ছাত্র সংগঠন, student organisation; ছাত্র সংসদ, students' union; আন্দোলন, movement; দাবি, demand; সংগঠিত হওয়া, to become organised; সচেতনতা, awareness; নির্বাচনে দাঁড়ানো, to stand for election. The qualifiers matter as much as the nouns, because they are what keep a claim honest: অনেকে, many; একটি বড় অংশ, a large section; কেউ কেউ, some; সবাই নয়, not everyone. A sentence beginning তরুণরা মনে করে, young people think, claims to know the minds of a whole generation; একটি বড় অংশ মনে করে claims something you can defend.
Worked example

Turning a generalisation into a claim with evidence

Rebuild it so that it would earn AO4 credit.

  1. 01Name the problem

The sentence claims something about every young person in a country of very many. It cannot be supported, cannot be checked and cannot be wrong, which is exactly why it earns nothing. The AO4 descriptors reward selecting relevant information to support arguments; there is no argument here to support.

  2. 02Replace the claim about minds with a claim about actions

What people did is documented; what they think is not, unless somebody surveyed them. বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে ছাত্ররা বারবার রাজনৈতিক পরিবর্তনের কেন্দ্রে থেকেছেন - in Bangladesh's history students have repeatedly been at the centre of political change. Note থেকেছেন, honorific, and বারবার, repeatedly, which is a pattern claim rather than a universal one.

  3. 03Support with dates, not adjectives

Four dates, four events, one clause. This is the evidence.

  4. 04Qualify honestly

But that does not mean all young people are politically active; many have never joined an organisation. The qualification strengthens the claim by showing you know its limits.

  5. 05Add the current argument

Many commentators think recent movements began outside party structures, though party organisers do not agree with that account. Two attributions, one live disagreement.

  6. 06Check the qualifiers

Read the paragraph and find every claim about a group. Each should carry a qualifier or an attribution: বারবার, বহু, অনেক ভাষ্যকার, দলীয় সংগঠকেরা. If any sentence says তরুণরা without one, rewrite it.

Three sentences, four dates, two attributions, one honest limit.

Exam focus

  • Memorise the sequence 1952, 1962, 1969, 1971, 1990, 2013, 2018, 2024. It is the evidence base for this whole sub-theme.
  • Distinguish the three channels - party, campus, non-party - before arguing about which matters most.
  • The voting age of 18 in India dates from a constitutional amendment of the late 1980s; do not attach it to Bangladesh's own arrangements.
  • Qualifiers - অনেকে, একটি অংশ, কেউ কেউ - are not hedging. They are what makes a claim about a generation defensible.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing তরুণরা চায় or তরুণরা মনে করে as though a generation had one mind.
  • Giving the Bangladeshi student sequence and then attaching it to West Bengal.
  • Confusing a student organisation, which is a party's wing, with a students' union, which is an elected campus body.
  • Treating online organising as though it had replaced party politics rather than as a channel alongside it.
  • Giving turnout or membership figures from memory.

ছাত্র সংগঠন: campus politics and the argument about it#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.2.2 Sub-theme: Politics and young people in the Bengali-speaking world - Young people and their engagement with politics

Key points

Every major party in Bangladesh maintains a student organisation, and knowing that they are party wings rather than independent societies is the first thing to get right. ছাত্রলীগ, ছাত্রদল, ইসলামী ছাত্রশিবির and ছাত্র ইউনিয়ন are among the best known, and each is affiliated to a parent party or political tradition. Separately from them stand the elected students' unions, of which the Dhaka University Central Students' Union, ডাকসু, is the most prominent; its elections in 2019 were the first held in twenty-eight years, a gap that tells you as much about the institution as any description could. The distinction between a party's student wing and an elected union is not pedantry: one exists to recruit and mobilise for a party, the other to represent students to a university, and conflating them makes the whole sub-theme unintelligible.
The argument about campus politics in Bangladesh is genuinely two-sided and is worth writing out properly. Those who defend it argue that student organisations have been the training ground of the country's political leadership, that they are the mechanism by which young people learn organisation and argument, and that the historical record of student movements is a national achievement rather than a problem. Those who criticise it argue that party control of campus life has produced violence, coercion in hall accommodation and the subordination of universities to party interests, and that the record of the last several decades is not the record of 1952. Since 2024 the future of student politics on campuses has been actively debated in Bangladesh, with proposals ranging from reform to prohibition; a candidate writing about it now should state the debate, name the positions and check the current position rather than describe a settled arrangement.
In West Bengal the affiliated student organisations of the state's parties are likewise active - a candidate should be able to name that they exist without needing to catalogue them - and the same tension between party affiliation and student representation exists in a different institutional form, since union elections in the state's colleges and universities have been held irregularly in recent years and the reasons for that are themselves argued about by parties, university authorities and student organisations. The British comparison is instructive here and is legitimate material for a candidate writing from Britain: student unions in the United Kingdom are also political, but they are not, as a rule, formal wings of national parties, and explaining that difference is a genuinely analytical paragraph rather than a descriptive one.
The register for writing about this material has to be neutral, and Bengali offers the words. ছাত্র সংগঠন, student organisation; ছাত্র সংসদ, students' union; অঙ্গসংগঠন, an affiliated wing; নির্বাচিত প্রতিনিধি, elected representative; হল, the university hall of residence; ক্যাম্পাস; সংঘর্ষ, clash; দখল, occupation or control; সংস্কার, reform; নিষেধাজ্ঞা, prohibition. The two frames that keep the paragraph balanced are সমর্থকদের যুক্তি হলো …, the supporters' argument is that, and সমালোচকদের যুক্তি হলো …, the critics' argument is that. Used as a pair, they let you set out a real disagreement in four lines without your own view appearing anywhere until you choose to put it there.
Worked example

A listening task where two speakers disagree

A Paper 3 passage sets a former student organiser against a current university teacher on campus politics. Questions ask for each speaker's main argument and for the point on which they agree. Work out the method.

  1. 01Expect agreement, not only disagreement

A well-set two-speaker passage almost always contains a point of agreement, and the question that asks for it is the one candidates most often miss because they have been listening for the clash. Note it on the first pass.

  2. 02Pass one: fix who is who

With two speakers, the first job is to attach each voice to its role. Listen for the self-identification in the opening exchange - আমি যখন ছাত্র ছিলাম, when I was a student, against আমি এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়াই, I teach at this university. Get this wrong and every subsequent answer is wrong.

  3. 03Pass two: find each main argument

A main argument in spoken Bengali is usually signposted: আমার বক্তব্য হলো, আসল কথা হলো, সবচেয়ে বড় সমস্যা হলো. Listen for these frames rather than for content; they mark where the speaker is putting weight.

  4. 04Pass three: find the agreement

    Agreement is signposted differently: এ ব্যাপারে আমি একমত, ঠিকই বলেছেন, তবে এটা সত্যি যে. Listen for the concessive - a speaker conceding is a speaker agreeing.

  5. 05Write each answer in the right voice

Each answer names whose view it reports. An answer that says ক্যাম্পাস রাজনীতি খারাপ has stated the candidate's view, not the speaker's, and will not be credited.

  6. 06Check the register of your own answer

Both speakers are adults being reported respectfully, so বলেছেন, মনে করেন, একমত হয়েছেন - the polite third person throughout. This is a small thing that examiners notice.

Result: A four-pass method - identify, argument, agreement, attributed answers - with the agreement question flagged in advance because it is the one that is most often lost. The passage is not testing your opinion of campus politics; it is testing whether you can hold two people's positions apart in your head and report them separately.

Exam focus

  • A party's student wing and an elected students' union are different institutions. Say which you mean.
  • The 2019 DUCSU elections after a twenty-eight-year gap is a single fact that carries a whole paragraph.
  • Give both arguments about campus politics with their holders; neither is obviously right.
  • The British student-union comparison is legitimate, available to you, and rarely used by candidates.

Typical mistakes

  • Describing student organisations as independent societies.
  • Writing about campus politics as though the position had not been under active debate since 2024.
  • Naming individuals involved in campus incidents, particularly where legal proceedings exist.
  • Presenting either the defence or the criticism of campus politics as the settled view.
  • Transplanting Bangladeshi campus arrangements onto West Bengal, which sits in a different university system.

অগ্রাধিকার: priorities for youth politics#

●●○StandardLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.2.2 Sub-theme: Politics and young people in the Bengali-speaking world - Priorities for youth politics

Key points

Employment is the first priority in both societies and it takes a specific institutional form that is worth knowing. In Bangladesh, the public service is entered through a competitive examination administered by a public service commission, and preparation for it - the BCS examination culture - occupies a large part of the graduate years for very many young people, sustaining a whole industry of coaching centres and guidebooks. Recruitment quotas within that system, reserving proportions of posts for specified categories, have been repeatedly contested, and the reform of those quotas was the proximate trigger of the movement of 2024. In West Bengal the equivalent institutional gravity attaches to the Indian and state public service commission examinations. The point for an essay is not that young people want jobs, which is universal, but that in both places the route to a secure job runs through one competitive examination, and that this shapes what young people study, where they live and what they campaign about.
Education quality is the second priority and connects directly to the social-issues theme. The complaint is not about access, which has improved substantially in both places, but about what schooling delivers: the gap between enrolment and learning, the near-universality of paid private tutoring in examination years and the cost that imposes on families, the language of instruction and its consequences for opportunity, and the mismatch between what is taught and what employers say they need. Each of these is documented and argued about by educationists, and each supports a paragraph. The third priority is environmental, and Bangladesh's position gives it particular weight: the country is among the most exposed in the world to sea-level rise, cyclone damage, river erosion and salinity intrusion, and young people have been prominent in climate campaigning both domestically and internationally.
Two further priorities are more recent and both are contested. Digital rights have become a youth political issue in both countries, covering online speech, the legislation regulating it and the practice of restricting internet access during periods of unrest; the argument sets governments' accounts of security and public order against the accounts of press-freedom and digital-rights organisations, and it should be presented as that argument. Women's safety and the position of young women in public life is a priority raised repeatedly in both societies, and it interacts with the research topic on the role of women in Bengali society. Corruption, and specifically the perception that appointments and contracts run through connections, is named as a priority by young people in both places in a way that is documented by the fact that political movements have been organised around it.
The vocabulary you need is that of demand and of policy: কর্মসংস্থান, employment; বেকারত্ব, unemployment; চাকরি, a job; কোটা, quota; নিয়োগ, recruitment; প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষা, competitive examination; শিক্ষার মান, quality of education; কোচিং; জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, climate change; পরিবেশ, environment; বাকস্বাধীনতা, freedom of expression; নিরাপত্তা, safety or security; দুর্নীতি, corruption; স্বচ্ছতা, transparency; জবাবদিহি, accountability. The structure that orders a priorities paragraph is the enumerative one: প্রথমত … তৃতীয়ত …, firstly, secondly, thirdly - simple, unambiguous and immediately legible to an examiner working through a mark scheme.
Worked example

Building a multi-skill answer on youth priorities

Paper 3's multi-skill task gives a recording of two students discussing what they want from politics, and a written source in which a commentator argues that youth movements name grievances but not policies. Plan the 200-word answer.

  1. 01Identify the actual disagreement

The recording is about what young people want; the text is about whether wanting is enough. They are not contradicting each other, they are operating at different levels - and saying so is the analytical move that earns the AO4-flavoured credit inside the AO1 and AO2 grids.

  2. 02Take one concrete demand from the recording

Not a summary of both speakers but one specific thing one of them said, reported accurately: প্রথম শিক্ষার্থী নিয়োগ পরীক্ষার স্বচ্ছতার কথা বলেছেন - the first student spoke about transparency in the recruitment examination. Specificity is what the AO1 grid rewards.

  3. 03Take the commentator's mechanism from the text

    লিখিত উৎসে বলা হয়েছে যে আন্দোলন দাবি তুলতে পারে, কিন্তু নীতিতে রূপান্তরের জন্য প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক প্রতিনিধিত্ব দরকার - the text says movements can raise demands but institutional representation is needed to turn them into policy.

  4. 04Set them against each other explicitly

The two sources are not contradicting each other; one says what young people want, the other how wanting reaches policy.

  5. 05Personal reaction with a reason

A reaction with a dated reason attached is an argument; a reaction without one is a preference.

  6. 06Conclude with what remains open

The question is not whether young people are interested in politics but through which institution their demands become policy.

Result: About 200 words in which both sources are used, one concrete point comes from each, the relation between them is named rather than assumed, and the personal reaction carries a dated reason. The move that lifts this answer is the refusal to treat two sources as necessarily opposed.

Exam focus

  • The public-service examination is the institutional fact that makes the employment priority specific rather than generic.
  • Quota reform in Bangladeshi public-service recruitment was the proximate trigger of 2024. Know the connection.
  • Bangladesh's climate exposure gives the environmental priority a weight it does not have everywhere.
  • প্রথমত, দ্বিতীয়ত, তৃতীয়ত is the clearest structure for a priorities answer and costs nothing.

Typical mistakes

  • Listing priorities that would be true of young people anywhere, with nothing specific to these societies.
  • Describing the quota question without saying what quotas are for or who contests them.
  • Presenting internet restrictions or speech legislation from one side only.
  • Claiming what proportion of young people hold any of these priorities.
  • Treating the priorities of rural, urban and diaspora young people as identical.

§ 04

মূল্যবোধ ও আদর্শ: values and ideals#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7637 - 3.2.2.2 Sub-theme: Politics and young people in the Bengali-speaking world - Values and ideals

Key points

The single most important phrase in Bangladeshi political language is মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা, usually rendered as the spirit of the liberation war, and understanding why it is contested is the best possible demonstration of what this bullet asks for. Every significant political tradition in the country invokes it; what it obliges is argued about continuously. For some it means secular, egalitarian and democratic government; for others it means the primacy of national self-determination; others again argue that the phrase has been used to close down disagreement rather than to settle it. None of those readings is a fringe position and none should be presented as the meaning. A candidate who writes এই শব্দবন্ধের অর্থ নিয়েই রাজনৈতিক বিতর্ক - the political argument is precisely about what this phrase means - has said more than three paragraphs of description could.
The constitutional question behind it is a documented and unusual one. Bangladesh's constitution of 1972 named ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতা, secularism, among its fundamental principles; that principle was removed in the later 1970s; an amendment in 1988 made Islam the state religion; and the fifteenth amendment of 2011 restored secularism among the fundamental principles while the state-religion provision remained. Both are therefore in the same document, and the argument about how they sit together is a live one conducted in courts, in parliament and in public. State that sequence with its dates and you have given an examiner a piece of precise constitutional knowledge; adjudicate it and you have given an opinion where evidence was asked for. In India, the corresponding argument concerns the constitutional commitment to secularism, the word having been added to the Preamble by amendment in the 1970s, and it too is publicly and continuously argued.
Beyond the constitutional, the values young people are reported to argue about cluster in recognisable places. Merit against connection in appointments - the demand for স্বচ্ছতা, transparency, and for জবাবদিহি, accountability - runs through both societies and was central to 2024. Individual choice against family authority, in marriage, career and mobility, connects this bullet directly to the traditional-versus-modern-values bullet in the trends theme. Language and identity remain live: Bangladesh's founding grievance was linguistic, and the status of Bengali against English in education and employment continues to be argued about. And for the diaspora there is a distinct set: what a British-born Bengali speaker owes to a country they may not have lived in, and whether cultural maintenance is a value or an inheritance.
The structures that let you write about values without preaching are the attributive and the concessive, used together. বলে দাবি করেন, তবু …, although many claim that, nevertheless. এই ব্যাখ্যা সর্বজনস্বীকৃত নয়, this interpretation is not universally accepted - a single clause that signals you know a claim is contested. And for your own position, when you choose to give it: আমার নিজের মূল্যায়ন হলো …, my own assessment is that, which marks the judgement as judgement, exactly as an examiner reading for evidence-based conclusions wants.
Worked example

Writing a personal reaction that is still an argument

Both the multi-skill task and the research-project essay ask for a personal reaction or evaluation. Show the difference between a preference and an argument, on the question of whether youth movements change anything.

  1. 01Write the preference first, so you can see it

It seems to me youth movements are very important. This is a preference: it reports a feeling and gives no reason, and no examiner can distinguish it from any other candidate's sentence.

  2. 02Attach a mechanism

    A reaction becomes an argument when it explains itself. Because they bring forward demands that party manifestos do not usually contain.

  3. 03Attach evidence

The 2018 road-safety movement is an example: the demand did not come from any party's programme. One dated case is worth more than three adjectives.

  4. 04Attach the counter-consideration

But raising a demand and turning it into policy are not the same, and it is at the second stage that movements often stall.

  5. 05Close with a judgement that survives the counter-consideration

So my own assessment is that the main contribution of these movements is to change the agenda of political discussion, not to make policy. The judgement is now narrower than the preference and far better supported.

  6. 06Test it

Ask of the final sentence: could a well-informed person disagree with this? If not, it is a platitude. Could I say what would change my mind? If not, it is a prejudice. A good personal evaluation passes both tests.

Four moves: reaction, mechanism, evidence, counter-consideration, narrowed judgement.

Exam focus

  • মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা is contested in its meaning, and saying so is the analysis. Do not choose a reading.
  • The constitutional sequence - 1972, later 1970s, 1988, 2011 - is precise, checkable knowledge very few candidates have.
  • Link this bullet to traditional versus modern values in theme 3.1.1; the two overlap deliberately.
  • এই ব্যাখ্যা সর্বজনস্বীকৃত নয় is a six-word clause that protects a whole paragraph.

Typical mistakes

  • Giving one meaning for মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা as though it were settled.
  • Stating that Bangladesh is a secular state, or that it is an Islamic state, when its constitution contains both provisions.
  • Confusing the Indian and Bangladeshi constitutional arguments, which are separate.
  • Writing about values as though a generation shared them.
  • Presenting the diaspora's questions about identity as the same as those debated in Bangladesh.

§ 05

প্রমাণ, দাবি নয়: writing about a generation without generalising#

●●●AdvancedLPAQA 7637 - 4.7.1 Paper 1 Research project AO4: relevant evidence drawn from the student's individual research and the success with which it is usedLPAQA 7637 - 4.7.3 Paper 3 Multi-skill task: analysis, evaluation, personal reaction and drawing a conclusion

Key points

Every mark scheme in this specification that rewards content rewards the same thing in different words: relevant information selected to support an argument, and appropriate evidence used to justify a conclusion. The AO4 grid at its top band asks for excellent knowledge and understanding, for consistently selecting relevant information, and for consistently using appropriate evidence. Notice what is not in that list: opinions, adjectives, enthusiasm and generalisations. This matters most in this sub-theme because a generation is the easiest thing in the world to generalise about, and because a candidate who has read a little about youth politics will be tempted to write about young people as a category with a mind of its own.
There are four kinds of statement you can safely make about a generation, and it is worth knowing which one you are making at any moment. First, what people did: attendance at a protest, participation in an election, membership of an organisation - documented, dateable and safe. Second, what institutions did: a law passed, a quota changed, an election held, a union suspended - equally safe. Third, what somebody said: a demand, a slogan, a manifesto, an interview - safe if attributed. Fourth, what people think: unsafe unless somebody surveyed them and you can name who, in which case it becomes a version of the third kind. An essay built from the first three kinds and honest about the fourth will read as knowledgeable; an essay built from the fourth alone will read as invented, because it is.
The Bengali that makes this discipline visible on the page is a short list of qualifiers and attributors, and they are worth writing on the inside cover of a notebook. Qualifiers: অনেকে, many; বহু, a great many; একটি বড় অংশ, a large section; কেউ কেউ, some; সবাই নয়, not everyone; বিশেষত শহরাঞ্চলে, particularly in urban areas. Attributors: গবেষকদের মতে, according to researchers; সংবাদমাধ্যমের প্রতিবেদনে, in press reports; আন্দোলনকারীদের দাবি অনুযায়ী, according to the protesters' claim; সরকারের বক্তব্য অনুযায়ী, according to the government's statement. Limiters: এ বিষয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য উপাত্ত সীমিত, reliable data on this is limited - a sentence which, used honestly, is worth more than the invented number it replaces.
Finally, remember that the specification permits and expects the individual research to draw on visual, audio and written sources, and requires online sources. For this sub-theme that opens genuinely good material: recorded interviews, documentary film, the published statements of student organisations, the manifestos of parties, and the reporting of Bengali-language news outlets in both countries. A candidate in Britain has an additional resource that many do not - the ability to observe and to ask within a Bengali-speaking community in Britain - and observation, honestly reported and clearly labelled as observation rather than as data, is legitimate evidence. আমি নিজে যা দেখেছি, what I myself have seen, is an honest frame, and it is a great deal better than a fabricated percentage.
Worked example

Auditing a paragraph for unsupported claims

Audit this paragraph and repair it: আজকের তরুণরা রাজনীতিতে বিশ্বাস হারিয়ে ফেলেছে। তারা ভোট দিতে চায় না। তারা মনে করে সব দলই এক। তাই তারা অনলাইনে প্রতিবাদ করে।

  1. 01Classify each sentence

Sentence one: what people think - kind four, unsupported. Sentence two: a claim about behaviour, but stated universally and without evidence - kind one, badly made. Sentence three: kind four again. Sentence four: kind one, but presented as a consequence of two unsupported claims. Three of four sentences are unsupportable as written.

  2. 02Repair sentence one with attribution

Some researchers and commentators think that a section of young people have lost confidence in conventional party politics. Attributed, qualified, and now defensible.

  3. 03Repair sentence two by making it about behaviour, not desire

Replace the claim about wanting with a claim you could check: প্রথমবারের ভোটারদের নিবন্ধন ও উপস্থিতি নিয়ে বিতর্ক আছে, তবে এ বিষয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য উপাত্ত সীমিত। There is argument about first-time voter registration and turnout, but reliable data on this is limited. That is honest and it is creditable.

  4. 04Repair sentence three by locating the claim

This argument has appeared in many statements by protesters. Now it is a documented claim by an identifiable group rather than a reading of a generation's mind.

  5. 05Repair sentence four by removing the false causation

At the same time online organising has increased, although a causal relationship between the two trends is not established. Refusing an easy causal claim is itself analysis.

  6. 06Compare the two versions

The original was four confident sentences that an examiner cannot credit. The repair is four careful sentences carrying two attributions, one qualifier, one honest limit and one refused causal claim - and it is longer only by a few words.

Run this audit on one paragraph a week and the habit becomes automatic.

Exam focus

  • Know which of the four kinds of statement you are making in every sentence about a generation.
  • Write the qualifier list and the attributor list into your revision notes and use them deliberately.
  • এ বিষয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য উপাত্ত সীমিত is an honest and creditable sentence. An invented figure is neither.
  • Personal observation, labelled as observation, is legitimate research evidence under this specification.

Typical mistakes

  • Building a whole paragraph from statements about what a generation thinks.
  • Using a qualifier once at the start and then generalising freely for the rest of the answer.
  • Presenting personal observation as though it were survey data.
  • Citing a figure with no source because it sounded plausible.
  • Confusing what a movement demanded with what young people in general wanted.

Active revision
