Graphic Communication (AQA 7203) is the design discipline concerned with communicating a message to an audience for a purpose - across illustration, advertising, packaging, branding, print, web and animation. Graphic communication is the design discipline concerned with communicating a message to an audience for a purpose, using visual means - image, type, colour and layout. Unlike fine art, which pursues ideas and expression as ends in themselves, graphic communication is purposeful and audience-directed: it exists to convey something (information, persuasion, identity, instruction) to particular people, and it succeeds or fails by how effectively it communicates to them. This orientation toward message, audience and purpose is the defining character of the discipline and shapes everything about how graphic work is made and judged.
The AQA Graphic Communication title (7203) spans a wide range of graphic disciplines: illustration, advertising, packaging, design for print, branding, multimedia, animation, and web, app and game design. What unites them is the communication task - each takes a message and an audience and designs a visual solution that communicates. A poster persuades, a logo identifies, packaging informs and attracts, an information graphic explains, an animation tells or teaches. The graphic designer is, at bottom, a visual communicator and problem-solver, and the range of the title reflects how pervasively design communicates in modern life.
Three questions drive every graphic project: what is the message (what must be communicated), who is the audience (whom it must reach), and what is the purpose (what it must achieve - to inform, persuade, identify, sell, instruct, entertain). These are not preliminaries to get past but the constant reference points of the whole design process: every decision about image, type, colour and layout is judged by whether it serves the message, suits the audience and achieves the purpose. A beautiful design that fails to communicate to its audience has failed as graphic communication, however accomplished it looks.
Because it is audience-directed, graphic communication requires understanding and empathy for the audience - their needs, expectations, tastes and context. A design for children differs from one for professionals; a warning must be instantly legible; a luxury brand must feel exclusive. The designer researches and considers the audience and designs for them, not for personal taste alone. This does not eliminate the designer's creativity or voice - the best design is both effective and inventive - but it disciplines creativity toward communication, which is what makes graphic design a design discipline rather than a fine art.
Graphic communication also carries responsibilities, because design shapes how people receive information and are persuaded. Clarity and honesty in communicating information, awareness of the persuasive power of design (used in advertising and, more troublingly, in propaganda), accessibility for all users, and ethical practice are part of mature graphic design. Understanding the discipline as purposeful visual communication - serving a message, an audience and a purpose, with craft and responsibility - is the foundation for working well in it, and it distinguishes graphic communication clearly from the ideas-led practice of fine art.
Worked example

Letting audience and purpose drive the design

The same message - 'recycle your waste' - must be designed for young children and for office workers. Show how audience shapes the design.

Graphic design typically works to a brief - a defined communication problem with a message, audience, purpose and constraints - and it solves that problem through a recognisable design process. While it shares the iterative develop-make-review-refine rhythm of all creative work, the graphic design process has a characteristic shape: understanding the brief, researching, generating ideas, developing the strongest, and resolving the final artwork. Working through this process purposefully, rather than leaping to a finished design, is how graphic designers arrive at solutions that genuinely communicate.
The process begins with understanding the brief and researching. Analysing the brief clarifies the message, audience, purpose and constraints (format, budget, where it will appear); research then investigates the subject, the audience, the context and - importantly - existing design in the field (precedent), so the designer understands the problem and the visual conventions and possibilities. This research phase, informed by studying relevant designers and design (Assessment Objective 1), grounds the design in real understanding rather than guesswork, and it is often where the strongest direction is first glimpsed.
Idea generation follows, and in graphic design it characteristically uses thumbnails and roughs - quick, small, rapid sketches exploring many possible solutions before committing to any. As with all divergent thinking, the aim is to generate many ideas widely before converging, and the thumbnail is the graphic designer's tool for this: cheap, fast visual sketches that let dozens of layout, image and type ideas be tried and compared. Generating a wide range of thumbnail solutions, then selecting the strongest to develop, is the classic graphic ideation method and a rich source of Assessment Objective 2 evidence.
Development takes the chosen idea(s) and refines them toward a resolved solution - working up the layout, type, image and colour, testing variations, and refining through review and feedback. This is where the design is genuinely designed: the composition tuned, the typography set, the image made or sourced, the colour resolved, all tested and refined iteratively. Development in graphic design often produces several worked-up options that are reviewed (against the brief and with feedback) before the final direction is chosen, and it is where craft and problem-solving meet.
Resolution produces the final artwork - the finished, print- or screen-ready design that solves the brief. The resolved design must communicate effectively to its audience, be crafted to a professional standard, and be technically correct for its output (correct format, resolution, colour model, bleed for print). A well-run graphic process is visible in the portfolio as a clear journey from brief, through research and thumbnails, through developed options, to a resolved, communicating outcome - evidencing the design thinking and meeting the objectives. Understanding and working this process is central to graphic communication.
Worked example

Working a branding brief

Show the design process for a brief to design an identity for a new independent coffee shop.

  1. 01Analyse and research

    Clarify the brief: message (artisan, local, quality), audience (local coffee-lovers), purpose (identity across signage, cups, social media). Research competitor branding and relevant designers.

  2. 02Generate thumbnails

    Produce many rough logo and identity thumbnails - marks, wordmarks, type treatments - exploring warmth, craft and locality, without committing yet.

  3. 03Develop options

    Select the two strongest directions and develop them - refining the mark, choosing type, resolving colour, testing them on a cup, a sign and a post - and review against the brief.

  4. 04Resolve

    Choose and resolve the final identity, producing print- and screen-ready artwork that communicates the artisan-local message consistently across applications.

Key points

Typography - the design and arrangement of type - is fundamental to graphic communication, because so much communication is verbal as well as visual, and how type looks and is arranged shapes both legibility and meaning. Type is broadly divided into serif faces (with small finishing strokes, traditionally seen as classic and readable in long text) and sans-serif faces (without them, seen as modern and clean), among many other categories, and each typeface has a character and tone. Choosing type is a meaningful design decision: a face carries associations (elegant, friendly, authoritative, playful) that must suit the message and audience, so typography is expressive as well as functional.
The craft of typography involves controlling the fine details that affect legibility and feel: the size and weight of type, the spacing between letters (tracking and kerning), the spacing between lines (leading), the length of lines, and the alignment (left, right, centred, justified). These details, often invisible to the untrained eye, distinguish professional typography from amateur, and getting them right - readable, well-spaced, appropriately set - is essential to type that communicates. Attention to this craft is a hallmark of good graphic design.
Typographic hierarchy is the deliberate ordering of type by importance so that the eye is guided through the information in the right order. By varying size, weight, colour, position and space, a designer signals what to read first (a headline), next (a subhead) and last (body text), organising the message so the audience can navigate it. Hierarchy is one of the most important tools of information design: a well-set hierarchy makes a complex message instantly navigable, while a flat, undifferentiated one confuses. Establishing clear hierarchy is central to layout.
Layout - the arrangement of type and image on the page or screen - is often organised by a grid, an underlying structure of columns and rows that guides placement and creates order, alignment and consistency. The grid was central to the influential Swiss (International Typographic) Style, whose designers (such as Josef Muller-Brockmann) used mathematical grids, sans-serif type and objective clarity to make design rational and legible. A grid gives a layout coherence and professionalism, aligning elements and unifying multi-page or multi-part designs, though skilled designers also know when to break the grid for emphasis.
Typography and layout together are where graphic communication does much of its work, and they reward both study and practice. Studying the great typographers and the grid tradition, learning the anatomy and categories of type, and practising the craft of setting and arranging type teaches the discipline. And because type and layout carry both information and tone, mastering them lets a designer communicate a message clearly, guide the audience through it, and give it the right character - the essence of graphic communication. Poor type and layout undermine even a strong idea; excellent ones are often what make a design work.
Worked example

Fixing a flat, gridless layout

A student's poster has all text the same size, no alignment and no order. Show how typography and the grid improve it.

    Differentiate the type: make the key message a large bold headline, the supporting information a smaller subhead, and the details small body text - so importance is signalled and the eye is guided.

  2. 02Impose a grid

    Set up columns and align all elements to the grid, so the layout gains order, alignment and a professional coherence instead of scattered placement.

  3. 03Refine the craft

    Adjust spacing (leading, tracking), line length and alignment for readability, and choose a typeface whose character suits the message and audience.

Result: Hierarchy guides the eye, the grid brings order, and typographic craft makes the type readable - transforming a flat block into a communicating design, and showing why type and layout are central to graphic communication.

Key points

Image-making is a major part of graphic communication, whether through illustration, photography or graphic marks, and images carry meaning powerfully and immediately. Illustration - creating images to communicate, explain or decorate - is a discipline in its own right, ranging from editorial and book illustration to information graphics and character design, and it lets a designer create bespoke imagery precisely suited to a message. Photography and found or manipulated images also serve graphic communication. In every case the image must serve the communication - chosen or made to convey the message to the audience - and combined effectively with type and layout.
Colour is one of the most powerful and immediate tools in graphic communication, carrying meaning, mood and association and strongly affecting how a design is read. The colour theory of the elements topic applies directly: colour relationships (complementary contrast for impact, analogous harmony for calm), warm and cool, saturation and value, and colour's psychological and cultural associations (red for urgency or passion, green for nature or health, blue for trust) are all deployed purposefully in design. Colour also does practical communication work - coding information, distinguishing elements, creating hierarchy - and it is central to brand recognition.
Branding and visual identity are among the most important applications of graphic communication. A brand identity is the consistent visual system - logo, colour, typography, imagery and style - by which an organisation is recognised and by which it communicates its character and values. A logo (a distinctive mark or wordmark) is its centrepiece, ideally simple, memorable, appropriate and versatile across every application and scale. Great identity designers (Paul Rand's corporate logos, Saul Bass's marks and film titles, Milton Glaser's I-heart-NY) show how a simple, well-crafted mark and a consistent identity can carry an organisation's whole character.
The power of branding lies in consistency and recognition. A brand identity works by appearing consistently across everything an organisation does - its products, packaging, advertising, signage, website and social media - so that the audience comes to recognise and associate the visual system with the organisation and its values. Designing an identity therefore means designing a coherent, flexible system, not just a single logo: a palette, typefaces, an image style and rules for their use, applied consistently. This systematic, consistent visual communication is a distinctive and demanding graphic-design skill.
For the student, image, colour and branding are rich areas to study and practise. Developing illustration and image-making skills, using colour purposefully and with knowledge of its associations, and understanding how visual identity communicates an organisation's character all extend a graphic-communication enquiry. Studying strong branding and illustration, and applying the principles in your own briefs - creating images that communicate, using colour for meaning and impact, and designing consistent identities - builds the core competencies of the discipline. As always, the test is communication: image, colour and brand must serve the message, audience and purpose.

Designing a consistent identity

Show how colour, image and consistency build a brand identity for an environmental charity.

Digital tools and outputs#

Key points

Graphic communication is now largely (though not exclusively) a digital discipline, and command of the standard software and an understanding of output are part of the craft. The core professional tools are vector software (such as Adobe Illustrator, for scalable shapes, logos, illustration and type), raster/image-editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop, for photographic and pixel-based work), and layout software (such as Adobe InDesign, for multi-page publications). Understanding which tool suits which task - vector for a logo, raster for a photograph, layout software for a magazine - is basic graphic-design literacy, though hand skills (drawing, making) remain valuable and are often combined with digital work.
The raster-versus-vector distinction is fundamental in graphic work. A vector image is defined by mathematical paths, so it scales to any size without loss and gives crisp, hard-edged shapes and type - essential for logos and illustration that must work from a business card to a billboard. A raster image is a grid of pixels, so it handles continuous-tone photographic imagery but loses quality when enlarged and is resolution-dependent. Choosing the right format, and understanding resolution (pixels per inch, with 300 ppi standard for print), is essential to producing work that outputs correctly.
Colour models must match the output, or colour shifts unexpectedly between screen and print. RGB (red, green, blue) is the additive model of screens and should be used for web and digital output; CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is the subtractive model of printing inks and should be used for print. A design made in RGB and sent to print without conversion will shift in colour, so professional practice sets the colour model to the intended output. Understanding RGB and CMYK, and designing in the correct one, is a mark of technical competence in graphic communication.
Designing for print and designing for screen differ in more than colour model. Print requires attention to resolution, bleed (extending the design past the trim edge so no white slivers appear when cut), trim and safe margins, and the physical qualities of paper and finish. Screen and interactive design requires attention to different sizes and devices (responsive design), to interaction and navigation (for web, app and game design), and to the possibilities of motion (animation). Knowing the requirements of the intended output - and designing to meet them - is part of resolving a graphic design correctly.
For the student, digital tools should be used purposefully and with real visual thinking, not as a substitute for it. The software offers powerful possibilities - non-destructive layering, precise type control, easy iteration, effects and compositing - that support experimentation and refinement, but strong graphic design still depends on understanding communication, composition, typography and colour. The tools execute design decisions; they do not make them. Combining command of the digital tools and outputs with genuine design thinking - and often with hand skills too - is what produces professional, communicating graphic work, correctly prepared for its destination.
Worked example

Preparing artwork for print and screen

A student's festival identity must appear as a printed poster and as social-media graphics. Show the technical decisions.

  1. 01Vector for the logo

    Build the logo and type in vector (Illustrator) so they scale crisply from a small post to a large poster without pixelating.

  2. 02Raster for the photo

    Edit the photographic background in raster (Photoshop) at 300 ppi for print, placing the vector logo and type over it.
