Abb. 1Je fester die Kollokation, desto wichtiger als Block zu lernen. Verb + Nomen (make / do / take / have + Nomen) sind die häufigste Fehlerquelle; Adjektiv + Nomen wie "a glaring error" oder "a profound impact" heben das Sprachgebrauchsniveau. Vokabel immer im Cluster lernen, nie als Einzelwort.

Kernpunkte

Substantive: the press, broadcasting, journalism, news outlet, breaking news, headline, editorial, op-ed, tabloid, broadsheet, prime-time, ratings, viewership, audience reach, fake news, disinformation, misinformation, filter bubble, echo chamber, citizen journalism.

Phrasal Verbs: cover up (the truth), make up (a story), come across (information), follow up on (a lead), look into (an allegation).
Idiome: read between the lines, take with a grain of salt, the truth is out there, set the record straight, news travels fast.
Musterbeispiel

Statistik glaubwürdig in einen Media-Essay einbauen

Integriere die Information "Reuters Institute 2023: trust in news in Austria = 38 %" so in einen Essay-Satz, dass sie als Beleg für ein Argument dient (nicht als blosse Zahl).

  1. 01Schritt 1 - Behauptung formulieren

Stelle zuerst die These auf, die die Statistik stützen soll: "Public confidence in traditional media is eroding."

  2. 02Schritt 2 - Quelle + Zahl anschliessen

Füge die Quelle mit korrekter Einleitungsphrase an: "According to a 2023 Reuters Institute report, ...". Die Präposition "according to" und das Jahr machen den Beleg glaubwürdig.

  3. 03Schritt 3 - Zahl interpretieren statt nur nennen

Nenne die Zahl und ziehe sofort eine Schlussfolgerung mit Cluster-Lexis: "... only 38 % of Austrians trust the news - a figure that points to a deepening crisis of credibility."

Ergebnis: Fertiger Satz: "Public confidence in traditional media is eroding: according to a 2023 Reuters Institute report, only 38 % of Austrians trust the news - a figure that points to a deepening crisis of credibility." - These + belegte Statistik + interpretierende Kollokation: maximaler Inhalts- und Sprachgebrauchswert.

Maturafokus

  • Bei Media-Essays Statistiken: "A 2023 Reuters Institute report shows that trust in news in Austria stands at 38 %."
  • Pro/Contra Social Media als Nachrichtenquelle: democratising vs. spreading misinformation.
  • Hedging für Behauptungen über Media: "is often accused of", "tends to amplify".
  • Beim Themenpool "Media": Brückenthemen Society (polarisation), Technology (algorithms), Education (media literacy).
  • Vermeide Floskeln ("Social media is bad") - differenziere ("Algorithms tend to amplify polarising content").

Typische Fehler

  • False friend "actual" / "current" / "topical": current news = aktuelle Nachrichten.
  • Singular / Plural: "news" ist uncountable (the news is, not are; a piece of news).
  • "Information" ist uncountable.
  • "Watch TV" (without article) vs. "watch the BBC" (with article).
  • Präposition "report on" (richtig) vs. "report about" (umgangssprachlich, akzeptiert).

Aktive Wiederholung

Write a 200-word paragraph on how to spot fake news online. Use 4 media collocations, 2 phrasal verbs, and 1 idiom. Add 1 modal verb of recommendation ("should", "ought to").

Kernpunkte

Substantive: curriculum, syllabus, pedagogy, assessment, exam, mock exam, GPA, tuition fees, scholarship, internship, apprenticeship, vocational training, higher education, secondary education, dropout rate, learning gap. Gerade im Bildungswortschatz lauern false friends (): "actually" = tatsächlich (nicht aktuell), "eventually" = schließlich (nicht eventuell) - solche Wörter kosten in Editing-Aufgaben Punkte.

False Friends - klassische DE-EN-Fallen

Abb. 2Wörter, die deutsch aussehen, aber etwas anderes bedeuten. In Editing- und Writing-Aufgaben sind sie eine häufige, leicht vermeidbare Fehlerquelle.
Verben: enrol in, drop out, sit / take / pass / fail an exam, get a degree, major in, specialise in, retake, sit for, hand in (an essay), revise / review (for an exam), cram, plagiarise, cheat.
Adjektive: academic, vocational, theoretical, practical, hands-on, interdisciplinary, demanding, rigorous, lenient, comprehensive, inclusive, equitable.
Kollokationen: a steep learning curve, a hands-on experience, a sound education, a rigorous curriculum, equal access to education, a comprehensive school, an academic transcript.
Phrasal Verbs: catch up on (lessons), fall behind, look up (information), brush up on (skills), drop out of (university), pick up (a language).
Idiome: to learn the ropes, to pass with flying colours, to be a slow burner, to bury one's head in books, food for thought.

False Friends im Editing entlarven und korrigieren

Finde und korrigiere die false-friend-Fehler: "I will eventually become my exam results next week, which is actually a very current topic among sensible students."

  1. 01"eventually"

"eventually" = schließlich, nicht "eventuell". Gemeint ist "vielleicht/möglicherweise" -> "possibly" oder "perhaps".

  2. 02"become"

"become" = werden, nicht "bekommen". Ergebnisse bekommt man -> "get / receive my exam results".

  3. 03"current" + "sensible"

"a very current topic" passt hier nicht (gemeint: aktuelles, viel diskutiertes Thema -> "a hotly debated topic"); "sensible" = vernünftig (nicht "sensibel"). Falls "sensibel/feinfühlig" gemeint war -> "sensitive".

  4. 04Korrigierte Fassung

"I will possibly get my exam results next week, which is actually a hotly debated topic among sensitive students."

Ergebnis: Vier false friends (eventually, become, current, sensible) korrigiert. Lehre: Wörter, die deutsch aussehen, vor dem Einsetzen auf ihre echte englische Bedeutung prüfen (Abb. 2).

Maturafokus

  • Bei Education-Essays: Statistiken ("OECD's PISA 2022 shows Austria scored 480 in reading, just above the OECD average").
  • Pro/Contra-Argumente zu Standardisierten Tests: comparability vs. teaching to the test.
  • Beim Themenpool "Education": Brückenthemen Work (skill gap), Society (inequality), Technology (digital learning).
  • Hedging: "It is often argued that ...", "may benefit from ...".
  • Vermeide simple Wortwiederholung: "school" -> "institution / educational establishment".

Typische Fehler

  • False friend: "high school" (US) ungefähr "Oberstufe" (AT) - aber nicht "Hochschule".
  • "Make a test" - falsch; korrekt "take / do a test".
  • "Learn" vs. "study": learn = aneignen, study = lernen / studieren.
  • "Lecture" (=Vorlesung) vs. "lesson" (=Schulstunde).
  • Singular / Plural: "homework" ist uncountable (kein "homeworks").

Aktive Wiederholung

Write a 250-word opinion paragraph on whether university tuition should be free. Use 4 education collocations, 1 statistic, 2 hedging phrases, and 1 idiom.

Aktiv abrufen

False Friends und uncountable nouns im Health-Cluster korrigieren

Korrigiere den fehlerhaften B2-Satz für einen Health-Essay: "The doctor gave me a recipe and many good advices, but I make no sport and I am often sick of the work stress."

  1. 01Schritt 1 - False Friends identifizieren

"recipe" (=Kochrezept) gehört hier nicht hin -> "prescription" (Arzneirezept). "make no sport" ist eine Lehnübersetzung -> "do not do any sport / do not exercise".

  2. 02Schritt 2 - uncountable nouns reparieren

"many good advices" ist falsch, weil "advice" unzählbar ist -> "a lot of good advice" oder "several useful pieces of advice".

  3. 03Schritt 3 - Kollokation und Register glätten

"sick of the work stress" mischt zwei Bedeutungen; gemeint ist krank durch Stress -> "run down because of work-related stress". Das ist eine feste Kollokation aus dem Cluster.

Ergebnis: Korrekte Version: "The doctor gave me a prescription and several useful pieces of advice, but I do not exercise and I am often run down because of work-related stress." - zwei False Friends behoben, ein uncountable noun korrekt, eine Cluster-Kollokation: Sprachrichtigkeit und Sprachgebrauch deutlich besser.

Maturafokus

  • Health-Essays: Statistiken ("the WHO reported in 2022 that around 1 in 8 people were living with a mental disorder in 2019").
  • Pro/Contra zu Plant-based Diets: health benefits, environmental impact vs. cultural traditions.
  • Beim Themenpool "Health": Brückenthemen Work (burnout), Education (PE in schools), Society (healthcare equity).
  • Hedging: "may contribute to", "tends to alleviate".
  • Vermeide unbelegte Behauptungen ("Vegan diets are healthiest") - belegen oder hedge.

Typische Fehler

  • False friend: "rezept" (Rezept) vs. "recipe" (Kochrezept) vs. "prescription" (Arzneirezept).
  • "Make a sport" - falsch; korrekt "play / do / take up a sport".
  • Singular / Plural: "advice" ist uncountable; "a piece of advice".
  • Präposition: "suffer from" (richtig) vs. "suffer of".
  • "Ill" (UK = krank) vs. "sick" (US = krank); im UK heisst "to be sick" meist = sich übergeben / übel sein.

Travel-Vokabular präzise verwenden - Countability und false friends

Korrigiere die typischen Travel-Fehler: "I made a wonderful travel to Italy. We arrived to Rome, stayed in a nice hotel, and the hostel had a vacation for two more nights."

  1. 01"a travel" - uncountable

"travel" ist meist uncountable; eine konkrete Reise ist "a trip" oder "a journey": "I went on a wonderful trip to Italy."

  2. 02"made" + "arrived to"

"make a trip" ist nicht idiomatisch -> "go on / take a trip". "arrive" nimmt "in" (Stadt) oder "at" (Punkt), nie "to": "we arrived in Rome".

  3. 03"vacancy" vs. "vacation"

"vacation" (US) = Urlaub; ein freies Zimmer ist eine "vacancy": "the hostel had a vacancy for two more nights."

  4. 04Korrigierte Fassung

"I went on a wonderful trip to Italy. We arrived in Rome, stayed at a nice hotel, and the hostel had a vacancy for two more nights."

Ergebnis: Korrekturen: a trip (nicht a travel), go on/take a trip, arrive in Rome, stay at a hotel, a vacancy (nicht vacation). Lehre: travel ist uncountable, und vacancy/vacation sind false friends.

Maturafokus

  • Travel-Essays: Statistiken ("Tourism contributes about 6.2 % of Austria's GDP (direct and indirect value added), WIFO 2023").
  • Pro/Contra zu Tourism: jobs and revenue vs. environmental damage and overtourism.
  • Beim Themenpool "Travel": Brückenthemen Environment (carbon footprint of flights), Society (cultural exchange), Work (gig jobs in hospitality).
  • Hedging: "tends to bring", "may contribute to".
  • Vermeide Floskeln ("Travel broadens the mind") - belege mit Beispiel.

Typische Fehler

  • False friend: "voyage" (UK = lange Reise per Schiff) vs. "trip" / "journey".
  • "Travel" ist meist uncountable (kein "a travel"; "a trip" / "a journey" stattdessen).
  • Präposition: "go to Vienna" vs. "arrive in Vienna" vs. "stay at a hotel".
  • "Pay a visit" (korrekt formal) vs. "make a visit".
  • False friend: "vacancy" (=freie Stelle / freies Zimmer) vs. "vacation" (US = Urlaub).

Register-Skala - informal bis formal

Textsorten nach RegisterTabelle mit 2 Spalten und 9 Zeilen, Daten: Textsorte · Register; Blog Comment · sehr informal; Email (Freund) · informal; Blog Post · eher informal; Article · neutral; Review · neutral-formal; Newsletter · eher formal; Opinion Essay · formal; Letter to Editor · formal; Report · sehr formalTEXTSORTEREGISTERBLOG COMMENTsehr informalEMAIL (FREUND)informalBLOG POSTeher informalARTICLEneutralREVIEWneutral-formalNEWSLETTEReher formalOPINION ESSAYformalLETTER TO EDITORformalREPORTsehr formal
Abb. 5Textsorten auf der Skala von informal (Blog Comment, Email an Freund) bis formal (Letter to the Editor, Report). Register steuert Anrede, Kontraktionen, Wortwahl und Satzbau - das falsche Register kostet im Kriterium Aufgabenerfüllung.

Kernpunkte

Idiom = feste Wendung, deren Bedeutung nicht aus den Einzelwörtern erschliessbar ist ("to bite the bullet" = sich überwinden). Ein passendes Idiom hebt den Sprachgebrauch; ein falsch verwendetes senkt zwei Kriterien gleichzeitig.
Cluster-uebergreifende High-Yield-Idiome: a double-edged sword (Vor- und Nachteile), the tip of the iceberg (sichtbarer Teil eines größeren Problems), to level the playing field (Chancengleichheit schaffen), food for thought (zum Nachdenken anregend), a drop in the ocean (verschwindend gering).

Du möchtest das Idiom "the tip of the iceberg" in einen formellen Environment-Report einbauen.

  3. 03Schritt 3 - an prominenter Stelle platzieren

Setze den Satz als pointierten Absatzschluss, damit das Idiom als Zusammenfassung wirkt, nicht als Dekoration mitten im Argument.

Ergebnis: Ergebnis: "The plastic bottles washed up on our beaches are only the tip of the iceberg; far greater quantities of microplastics already circulate, undetected, throughout the food chain." - korrektes Idiom, themenbezogen, an wirkungsvoller Schlussposition, Register stimmig.

Maturafokus

  • Plane pro Text 1 starkes Idiom an einer prominenten Stelle (Hook oder Conclusion).
  • Prüfe Register: informelle Idiome nur in Blog/Comment/Email an Freund, nicht in Report/Letter to the Editor.
  • Verbinde Idiom mit dem Thema, nicht dekorativ: "The single-use plastic we see is only the tip of the iceberg."
  • Im Speaking: 1-2 Idiome pro Monolog wirken natürlich; mehr klingt einstudiert.
  • Lerne Idiome immer mit Beispielsatz und Register-Etikett, nie als blosse Liste.

Typische Fehler

  • Idiom wörtlich aus dem Deutschen übersetzt ("It rains cats and dogs" ist korrekt, "I understand only train station" ist es nicht).
  • Idiom-Stapelung in einem Absatz - wirkt unnatürlich und mechanisch.
  • Informelles Idiom im formellen Text (Register-Bruch).
  • Idiom leicht falsch ("a blessing in the sky" statt "a blessing in disguise").
  • Idiom ohne thematischen Bezug eingefügt - der Leser merkt das Auswendiggelernte.

Aktive Wiederholung

Pick six idioms from across all eight clusters. For each, write the meaning, the register (formal/neutral/informal), and one example sentence tied to a Matura topic. Then mark which two you would risk using in a formal Letter to the Editor and explain why the other four are too informal.

Kernpunkte

Paraphrasieren = denselben Inhalt mit anderen Worten / anderer Struktur ausdrücken; zentral für Summary-Writing, Reading (Synonyme erkennen) und Sprachgebrauch (Wortwiederholung vermeiden).
Drei Paraphrasen-Techniken: 1) Synonym ersetzen (important -> crucial / vital / essential), 2) Wortart wechseln (decide -> make a decision; the rise in X -> X rose), 3) Struktur drehen (Active <-> Passive, Cause <-> Effect).
Synonym-Ketten für häufige Allerweltswörter: good -> beneficial / valuable / sound; bad -> detrimental / harmful / damaging; big -> substantial / considerable / significant; show -> demonstrate / reveal / indicate; problem -> issue / challenge / drawback.
Musterbeispiel

Einen Satz mit drei Techniken paraphrasieren

Paraphrasiere für eine Summary: "The government decided to increase funding because many schools were struggling." Nutze nacheinander Synonym, Wortartwechsel und Strukturdrehung.

  1. 01Technik 1 - Synonyme ersetzen

"increase" -> "boost", "struggling" -> "underfunded": "The government decided to boost funding because many schools were underfunded."

  2. 02Technik 2 - Wortart wechseln (Nominalisierung)

"decided to increase" -> "the decision to raise": "The government's decision to raise funding responded to widespread underfunding."

  3. 03Technik 3 - Struktur drehen (Ursache <-> Folge)

Folge voranstellen: "Widespread school underfunding prompted the government to step up financial support."

  4. 04Summary-Regel beachten

  • Übe den Wortartwechsel als schnellste Paraphrase ("The government decided to ..." -> "The government's decision to ...").

Typische Fehler

  • Synonym mit falscher Konnotation gewählt ("skinny model" wo "slim" gemeint war).
  • Im Summary zu viele Originalwörter übernommen - gilt als Kopieren, kostet Inhalts-Punkte.
  • Synonym, das nicht ins Kollokationsmuster passt ("make a damage" statt "do / cause damage").
  • In Reading auf die wörtliche Wiederholung hereingefallen (lexical trap).
  • Pronomen-Bezug nach Synonymwechsel unklar geworden.

Aktive Wiederholung

Take a 120-word news paragraph and write a 40-word summary that uses no more than three consecutive words from the original. Then list three sentences from the paragraph and paraphrase each one using a different technique (synonym, word-class change, structure flip).
