Work and Career - Vokabel, Kollokationen, Phrasal Verbs#

●●○StandardLPE-V-Work-1.1

Collocation-Strength - schwache bis starke Wortverbindungen

Kollokationen - frei bis festTabelle mit 3 Spalten und 4 Zeilen, Daten: Stärke · Kollokation · Merkmal; frei · a nice day · frei ersetzbar; mittel · make a decision · Verb + Nomen; stark · a pressing issue · Adjektiv + Nomen; fest · make ends meet · idiomatischSTÄRKEKOLLOKATIONMERKMALFREIa nice dayfrei ersetzbarMITTELmake a decisionVerb + NomenSTARKa pressing issueAdjektiv + NomenFESTmake ends meetidiomatisch
Abb. 1Je fester die Kollokation, desto wichtiger als Block zu lernen. Verb + Nomen (make / do / take / have + Nomen) sind die häufigste Fehlerquelle; Adjektiv + Nomen wie "a glaring error" oder "a profound impact" heben das Sprachgebrauchsniveau. Vokabel immer im Cluster lernen, nie als Einzelwort.

Kernpunkte

Substantive: workplace, workforce, the labour market, job satisfaction, work-life balance, burnout, glass ceiling, gig economy, freelance work, remote / hybrid work, four-day week, career path, salary cap, unemployment rate.
Verben: pursue a career, climb the career ladder, hand in your notice, get promoted, get laid off, get sacked, take maternity / paternity leave, work flexible hours, work overtime, telecommute, retrain, upskill.
Adjektive: well-paid, demanding, rewarding, fulfilling, monotonous, repetitive, lucrative, precarious, secure, freelance, blue-collar, white-collar.
Kollokationen: a steep learning curve, a glittering career, dead-end job, a fast-paced environment, a hands-on role, a stepping stone, take on responsibility, a heavy workload.
Phrasal Verbs: take on (a new role), call off (a meeting), put off (a deadline), step down (resign), step up (take responsibility), pull through (a difficult period).
Idiome: to go the extra mile, to think outside the box, to have one's plate full, to bite off more than one can chew, to break the ice, to call it a day.
Musterbeispiel

Von B2-Allerweltslexis zu C1-Kollokationen aufwerten

Werte den folgenden flachen B2-Satz für einen Work-Essay auf C1-Niveau auf: "Many people have a bad job that is not good for them and they want to change it but it is hard."

  1. 01Schritt 1 - schwache Wortverbindungen markieren

Identifiziere die freien, ungenauen Kombinationen: "a bad job", "not good for them", "want to change it", "it is hard". Jede ist ersetzbar durch eine feste Kollokation aus dem Cluster.

  2. 02Schritt 2 - Kollokationen einsetzen

"a bad job" -> "a dead-end job" oder "a precarious, low-paid position"; "not good for them" -> "takes a toll on their wellbeing"; "want to change it" -> "are keen to switch careers"; "it is hard" -> "the labour market makes a career change far from straightforward".

  3. 03Schritt 3 - Hedging und Struktur anpassen

Ersetze die kategorische Aussage "Many people" durch hedged "A growing number of employees" und verbinde mit einem Konzessiv-Connector ("yet"), damit der Satz auch im Aufbau eine Stufe steigt.

Ergebnis: C1-Version: "A growing number of employees feel trapped in dead-end, precarious positions that take a toll on their wellbeing; yet switching careers in a volatile labour market is far from straightforward." - drei feste Kollokationen, ein Konzessiv-Connector, ein Hedging-Subjekt: Sprachgebrauch von 3/5 auf 4-5/5.

Maturafokus

  • Verwende in jedem Work-Essay 1 Statistik (z.B. "Eurostat 2024 reports a 6.1 % EU unemployment rate") + 1 Idiom + 2 Kollokationen.
  • Bei Diskussionen über Remote Work: weigh up the pros (work-life balance, cuts commuting time) and cons (isolation, blurred boundaries).
  • Bei Burnout: chronic fatigue, mental exhaustion, work-related stress, mental health awareness.
  • Beim Themenpool "Work": orientiere dich an einer These (z.B. "The four-day week is an idea whose time has come").
  • Vermeide simple Wortwiederholung: "job" -> "position / role / occupation".

Typische Fehler

  • False friends: "chef" (=Koch) vs. "boss" (=Chef).
  • "Earn money" + Verb (richtig) vs. "win money" (nur Glücksspiel / Lotterie).
  • "Make a job" - falsch; korrekt "do a job".
  • "Work" als zählbar verwendet (a work) - korrekt "a job", "a piece of work".
  • Präposition "in" / "at" / "for" verwechselt: "work at Google", "work for Google", "work in the financial sector".

Aktive Wiederholung

Write 6 sentences about your future career using 3 different verbs, 2 collocations, and 1 idiom. Then write a 100-word paragraph on the trade-offs of remote work using at least 3 of the listed vocabulary items.

●●○StandardLPE-V-Env-1.1

Kernpunkte

Substantive: climate change, global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint, biodiversity loss, deforestation, plastic pollution, fossil fuels, renewable energy, single-use plastics, fast fashion, ecological / carbon offset, melting ice caps, extreme weather events, rising sea levels. Viele dieser Begriffe bilden eine Kausalkette (): fossil fuels -> emissions -> global warming -> extreme weather - sie liefert zugleich die Argumentstruktur Ursache-Folge-Lösung.

Klima-Kausalkette - vom Verursacher zur Folge

Klima-KausalketteNetzgraph, fossil fuels → GHG emissions, GHG emissions → global warming, global warming → extreme weatherfossil fuelsGHG emissionsglobal warmingextreme weatherburningtrap heatrising seas
Abb. 2Die Ursache-Wirkungs-Kette des Klimawandels liefert zugleich das thematische Vokabular und die Argumentstruktur für einen Environment-Text: fossil fuels -> emissions -> warming -> impacts.
Verben: tackle / combat climate change, cut / slash / offset emissions, raise awareness, switch to renewables, phase out (fossil fuels), invest in green technology, recycle, reduce, reuse, conserve resources, deforest, pollute, contaminate.
Adjektive: sustainable, eco-friendly, biodegradable, renewable, finite, non-renewable, carbon-neutral, environmentally conscious, single-use, fossil-fuelled.
Kollokationen: alarming rate, devastating consequences, irreversible damage, pressing issue, environmental footprint, sustainable practices, green initiatives, the climate crisis, a green transition.
Phrasal Verbs: cut down on (consumption), give up (plastic bags), bring about (change), set up (a recycling scheme), use up (resources).
Idiome: the elephant in the room, a drop in the ocean, the tip of the iceberg, food for thought, leave a mark, leave a footprint.
Musterbeispiel

Environment-Absatz entlang der Kausalkette bauen

Schreibe einen Body-Absatz (ca. 70 Wörter) zum Klimawandel, der der Kette aus Abb. 2 folgt und Cluster-Lexis, eine Statistik und Hedging einbaut.

  1. 01Ursache (cause)

Beginne bei der Quelle: "The continued burning of fossil fuels remains the single largest driver of greenhouse gas emissions."

  2. 02Wirkung (effect) + Statistik

Folge mit Beleg: "These emissions have already pushed global temperatures up by roughly 1.1 C since pre-industrial times, fuelling more frequent extreme weather events."

  3. 03Lösung (solution) + Hedging

Lösungsorientiert mit Hedging: "A rapid green transition - phasing out coal and investing in renewables - could potentially mitigate the worst impacts."

Ergebnis: Fertiger Absatz folgt cause -> effect -> solution: fossil fuels -> emissions -> warming -> extreme weather -> green transition, mit Kollokationen (greenhouse gas emissions, extreme weather, green transition), einer Statistik (1.1 C) und Hedging (could potentially) - 5/5 in Inhalt und Sprachgebrauch.

Maturafokus

  • In Climate-Essays Statistiken einbauen: "According to the IPCC AR6 (2023), the global average temperature has risen by about 1.1 C since pre-industrial times."
  • Lösungsorientierung: nicht nur Probleme aufzählen, sondern Lösungen ("a circular economy", "carbon pricing", "investing in green infrastructure").
  • Hedging: "may exacerbate", "could potentially mitigate".
  • Beim Themenpool "Environment" auch Bezug auf Wirtschaft, Politik, Sozialgerechtigkeit (just transition).
  • Vermeide Floskeln ("We should save the planet") - bevorzuge konkret ("We should restructure subsidies away from fossil fuels").

Typische Fehler

  • Verwechslung weather / climate: weather = kurzfristig, climate = langfristig.
  • False friend "actual" (=tatsächlich/real) vs. dt. "aktuell" (=current); "current" = Strom / aktuell.
  • "Reduce of CO2" - falsch; korrekt "reduce CO2 emissions".
  • Singular / Plural: "research" ist uncountable (a piece of research, not researches).
  • Präposition "in" vs. "on" the environment: "have an impact on the environment".

Aktive Wiederholung

Write a 200-word paragraph on one specific environmental policy (e.g. a meat tax). Use 4 collocations, 1 statistic, 1 idiom, and 1 hedging phrase. Identify each in the margin.

Balancierten Pro-Kontra-Absatz zu KI bauen (Technology-Cluster)

Konstruiere einen ausgewogenen Body-Absatz (ca. 70 Wörter) zu "Should AI tools be allowed in schools?" mit je einem Pro- und einem Kontra-Argument, Cluster-Lexis und Hedging.

  1. 01Schritt 1 - Topic Sentence mit Cluster-Lexis

Beginne mit einer These-Andeutung: "Artificial intelligence is a genuine double-edged sword in education." Das Idiom signalisiert sofort die Pro-Kontra-Struktur.

  2. 02Schritt 2 - Pro-Argument mit Beleg

Pro-Seite mit konkretem Nutzen + Hedging: "On the one hand, intelligent tutoring systems can provide personalised feedback at scale, which may help to bridge learning gaps."

  3. 03Schritt 3 - Kontra-Argument + Konzession

Kontra-Seite mit Konzessiv-Connector: "On the other hand, an over-reliance on automation risks eroding critical-thinking skills, and the issue of data privacy remains the elephant in the room."

Ergebnis: Fertiger Absatz: "Artificial intelligence is a genuine double-edged sword in education. On the one hand, intelligent tutoring systems can provide personalised feedback at scale, which may help to bridge learning gaps. On the other hand, an over-reliance on automation risks eroding critical-thinking skills, and the issue of data privacy remains the elephant in the room." - 2 Idiome, 1 Kollokation ("learning gaps"), 1 Hedging ("may help to"), klare Pro-Kontra-Struktur: 4-5/5 in Inhalt und Sprachgebrauch.

Maturafokus

  • Pro/Contra-Argumente zu KI: productivity gains vs. job displacement; medical breakthroughs vs. surveillance risks.
  • Statistiken: "By 2030, AI could displace 14 % of jobs globally (McKinsey 2023)".
  • Hedging bei AI-Vorhersagen: "could potentially", "may well", "is likely to".
  • Bei Diskussionen über Social Media: cite Studien (e.g. Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation" - paraphrasieren).
  • Beim Themenpool "Technology": denke an die Brückenthemen Education (digital tools), Work (automation), Society (digital divide).

Typische Fehler

  • "Make a photo" - falsch; korrekt "take a photo".
  • "Hardware / Software" sind uncountable (kein "softwares").
  • False friend: "control" (=verwalten / steuern) vs. "kontrollieren" (=check, monitor).
  • "Internet" mit Artikel "the": "on the internet" (UK / US).
  • Phrasal Verbs falsch: "log on" vs. "log in" - beides möglich; "log into Facebook" / "log on to Facebook".

§ 04

Society and Citizenship - Inequality, Migration, Identity#

●●○StandardLPE-V-Soc-1.1

Kernpunkte

Substantive: social inequality, the wealth gap, the digital divide, social mobility, gender equality, racial discrimination, integration, multiculturalism, civic engagement, voter turnout, populism, polarisation, civil rights, the welfare state. Achte bei diesen Themen auf Framing (): dieselbe Sache klingt je nach Wortwahl neutral, positiv oder negativ - eine bewusste, ausgewogene Wortwahl ist hier ein Register-Marker.

Framing - neutrale vs. gewertete Wortwahl

Verben: tackle inequality, bridge the gap, address discrimination, foster integration, raise awareness, advocate for (a cause), volunteer, donate, mobilise voters, polarise opinion, marginalise.
Adjektive: marginalised, underprivileged, diverse, inclusive, exclusive, biased, prejudiced, equitable, fair, just, polarised, divisive.
Kollokationen: a deeply divided society, the wealth gap is widening, a marginalised community, a level playing field, social cohesion, civic responsibility.
Phrasal Verbs: stand up for (your rights), bring about (change), look up to (a role model), reach out to (the community), put up with (discrimination), give back to (society).
Idiome: to level the playing field, a melting pot / a salad bowl, to break the glass ceiling, to walk a mile in someone's shoes.
Musterbeispiel

Loaded language erkennen und neutral umschreiben

Eine Schlagzeile lautet: "Mob of illegal aliens floods the city, sparking chaos." Analysiere die Wertung und formuliere eine neutrale Variante (z.B. für eine Summary).

  1. 01Loaded terms isolieren

"mob" (statt group/crowd), "illegal aliens" (statt migrants), "floods" (statt arrives in large numbers), "chaos" (statt disruption) - jedes Wort transportiert eine negative Wertung.

  2. 02Auf der Framing-Achse einordnen (Abb. 4)

Alle vier liegen in der Spalte "negativ". Neutral wären: group / migrants / arrive / disruption; positiv gerahmt wäre "newcomers".

  3. 03Neutral umschreiben

Für eine sachliche Summary: "A large group of migrants arrived in the city, leading to some disruption."

  4. 04Lehre fürs eigene Schreiben

In Summary und Report neutral bleiben; in Opinion Essay/Letter to the Editor darfst du bewusst rahmen - aber kontrolliert und belegt, nicht polemisch.

Ergebnis: Aus "Mob of illegal aliens floods the city, sparking chaos" wird neutral "A large group of migrants arrived in the city, leading to some disruption." Lehre: Wortwahl ist Bewertung - in neutralen Textsorten entschärfen, in Meinungstexten bewusst und fair einsetzen.

Maturafokus

  • In Society-Essays Statistiken / Beispiele (Zahl vor der Prüfung gegenchecken): "Austria's gender pay gap stood at around 18 % in 2023 (Eurostat)".
  • Lösungsorientierte Vokabel: equal opportunities, quotas, affirmative action, social housing, universal basic income, integration programmes.
  • Hedging für politische Themen: "It is often argued that ...", "Critics maintain that ...".
  • Beim Themenpool "Society": denke an Brückenthemen Education (equal access), Migration (integration), Work (pay gap).
  • Vermeide Pauschalisierungen ("All immigrants ...") - immer mit Hedging oder spezifischer Gruppe.

Typische Fehler

  • False friend: "actual" (=tatsächlich/real, NICHT "aktuell") vs. dt. "aktuell" (=current); Adverb "actually" = in fact.
  • "Society" als Plural - im Singular zu verwenden.
  • "Politic" - falsch; korrekt "political" (adj.) oder "politics" (n. uncountable).
  • Verwechslung "racial" / "racist": racial = bezogen auf Rasse, racist = rassistisch.
  • Präposition "discriminate against" (richtig) statt "discriminate to".

Aktive Wiederholung

Write a 200-word paragraph proposing one concrete policy to reduce social inequality in your city. Use 4 society collocations, 1 statistic, 1 idiom, and at least 1 modal verb of suggestion.

Phrasal Verbs systematisch - Partikellogik statt Auswendiglernen#

●●●VertiefungLPE-V-Work-1.1LPE-LiU-WF-1.1

Phrasal-Verb-Map - Partikel und Bedeutungsrichtung

Phrasal Verbs - PartikelrichtungTabelle mit 3 Spalten und 4 Zeilen, Daten: Partikel · Richtung · Beispiel; up · abschliessen · give up, take up; down · reduzieren · cut down, slow down; off · trennen · call off, put off; out · vollständig · carry out, point outPARTIKELRICHTUNGBEISPIELUPabschliessengive up, take upDOWNreduzierencut down, slow downOFFtrennencall off, put offOUTvollständigcarry out, point out
Abb. 5Dieselbe Basis (give, put, take, cut) plus Partikel ergibt neue Bedeutungen; die Partikel trägt oft eine konsistente Richtung. Trennbar: "carry the plan out" / "carry it out". Untrennbar: "look after the child" (nicht "look the child after").

Kernpunkte

Phrasal Verb = Verb + Partikel (Adverb/Präposition); die Partikel verändert oder verschiebt die Bedeutung des Grundverbs oft idiomatisch (give = geben, give up = aufgeben).
Partikelrichtung als Lernhilfe: up = abschliessen/steigern (use up, take up, step up), down = reduzieren/dokumentieren (cut down, write down), off = trennen/abbrechen (call off, put off), out = vollständig/hervortreten (carry out, point out), on = fortsetzen (carry on, go on).
Trennbar (separable) vs. untrennbar (inseparable): "carry out the plan" / "carry the plan out" / "carry it out" (separable, Pronomen MUSS dazwischen); "look after the child" (inseparable, kein "look the child after").
Register: Phrasal Verbs sind oft informeller als ihr lateinisches Äquivalent - "put off" (informell) vs. "postpone" (formell), "find out" vs. "ascertain". Im formellen Essay bewusst mischen, nicht überverbrauchen.
Hochfrequente Matura-Phrasal-Verbs nach Cluster: Work (take on, step down, lay off), Environment (cut down on, phase out, bring about), Technology (log in, back up, opt out), Society (stand up for, reach out, bring about).
Nominalisierung: viele Phrasal Verbs haben ein zugehöriges Substantiv (break down -> a breakdown, take over -> a takeover, set back -> a setback) - nützlich für Language in Use (Word Formation).
Musterbeispiel

Phrasal Verbs über Partikellogik und Nominalisierung lösen

Bestimme über die Partikellogik: 1) Open Cloze: "Rising costs forced the airline to call ___ several flights." 2) Word Formation: "The talks ended in a complete ___ (BREAK DOWN)."

  1. 01Item 1 - Partikelrichtung

"call ___ a flight" = absagen/abbrechen. Die Partikel für "abbrechen/absagen" ist "off" (call off, put off). -> "off".

  2. 02Item 1 - Probe

Separable: "call off the flight" / "call it off" - passt grammatisch und idiomatisch.

  3. 03Item 2 - Nominalisierung

Das Phrasal Verb "break down" (scheitern/zusammenbrechen) wird zum Substantiv "a breakdown" (ein Wort, kein "breaking down").

  4. 04Register beachten

"call off" ist neutral bis informell; im sehr formellen Report ginge auch "cancel". Im Writing 2-3 präzise Phrasal Verbs einsetzen, aber nicht überladen.

Ergebnis: 1) off (call off), 2) breakdown. Lehre: Die Partikel trägt eine konsistente Richtung (off = abbrechen), und viele Phrasal Verbs liefern über Nominalisierung gleich die Word-Formation-Antwort.

Maturafokus

  • Erkläre in Language in Use (Open Cloze) die fehlende Partikel über die Richtungslogik, nicht über Raten - "She refused to give ___ smoking" -> "up" (abschliessen/aufgeben).
  • Setze im Writing 2-3 präzise Phrasal Verbs statt eines überformellen Vokabulars - das wirkt idiomatisch und natürlich (Sprachgebrauch).
  • Achte bei separablen Phrasal Verbs mit Pronomen-Objekt auf die Wortstellung ("turn it down", nie "turn down it").
  • Nutze die Nominalisierung in Word-Formation-Tasks ("The negotiations led to a complete ___ (BREAK DOWN)" -> "breakdown").
  • Vermeide überregionale Verwechslung (UK "fill in a form" vs. US "fill out a form" - beide akzeptiert, aber konsistent bleiben).

Typische Fehler

  • Pronomen-Objekt falsch platziert: "switch off it" statt "switch it off".
  • Untrennbares Phrasal Verb getrennt: "look the information up" ist nur bei separablem "look up" korrekt; "look after" bleibt zusammen.
  • Partikel weggelassen, weil sie im Deutschen fehlt ("She gave smoking" statt "gave up smoking").
  • Phrasal Verb falsch nominalisiert ("a breaking down" statt "a breakdown").
  • Zu viele informelle Phrasal Verbs in einem formellen Report - der Ton kippt ins Umgangssprachliche.

Aktive Wiederholung

Choose 8 phrasal verbs from across the four clusters. For each, write the meaning, mark it separable or inseparable, give the related noun if one exists, and write one example sentence. Then rewrite three of them using a single-word synonym and note the register difference.

Aktiv abrufen

Abb. 6Je fester die Kollokation, desto wichtiger als Block zu lernen. Verb + Nomen (make / do / take / have + Nomen) sind die häufigste Fehlerquelle; Adjektiv + Nomen wie "a glaring error" oder "a profound impact" heben das Sprachgebrauchsniveau. Vokabel immer im Cluster lernen, nie als Einzelwort.

Kernpunkte

Hedging = vorsichtiges, abgesichertes Formulieren; signalisiert Differenzierung und gehört zum C1-Spektrum (Kriterium Sprachgebrauch). Werkzeuge: modale Hilfsverben (may, might, could), Lexical Hedges (seem, tend to, appear to), Adverbien (arguably, presumably, broadly), Mengenangaben (a number of, the majority of).
Booster-Lexis (Gegenteil von Hedging) für starke Argumente: undoubtedly, clearly, it is evident that, there is no denying that - sparsam einsetzen, sonst wirkt der Text dogmatisch.
Akademische Verben statt Allerweltslexis: "show" -> demonstrate / indicate / suggest; "talk about" -> address / examine / explore; "make better" -> enhance / improve / boost; "make worse" -> exacerbate / aggravate.
Nominalstil massvoll: "Because prices rose, demand fell" -> "The rise in prices led to a fall in demand." Nominalisierung verdichtet, darf den Text aber nicht unleserlich machen.
Stance-Marker für Meinungstexte: "It could be argued that ...", "There is a strong case for ...", "Critics maintain that ...", "Proponents contend that ..." - vermeiden monoton wiederholtes "I think".
Formelle Kollokationen für Bewertungen: of paramount importance, a matter of grave concern, a far-reaching impact, a pressing issue, a compelling argument, a glaring contradiction.
Musterbeispiel

Kategorische Aussage in akademisches Register heben

Hebe diese kategorische, umgangssprachliche Aussage auf Maturaniveau: "Social media totally destroys kids' concentration and everyone knows it."

  1. 01Booster + Umgangssprache diagnostizieren

"totally destroys" (übertrieben), "kids" (umgangssprachlich), "everyone knows it" (unbelegte Pauschalisierung) - alles zu absolut und zu informell.

  2. 02Hedging + präzises Subjekt

"totally destroys" -> "may significantly impair"; "kids" -> "adolescents"; "everyone knows" -> "research increasingly suggests".

  3. 03Akademisches Verb + Stance-Marker

Statt "everyone knows it" einen Stance-Marker mit Beleghinweis: "There is growing evidence that ...".

  4. 04Zusammensetzen

"There is growing evidence that heavy social-media use may significantly impair adolescents' concentration."

Ergebnis: Aus "Social media totally destroys kids' concentration and everyone knows it" wird "There is growing evidence that heavy social-media use may significantly impair adolescents' concentration." - Hedging (may), präzise Lexis (impair, adolescents), Stance-Marker statt Pauschalisierung. Hebt Sprachgebrauch und schützt vor Inhalts-Fehlern.

Maturafokus

  • Plane pro Opinion Essay 2-3 Hedging-Ausdrücke und 1 Booster für das Hauptargument - das zeigt Kontrolle über Register.
  • Ersetze beim Editing jedes zweite "I think" durch einen Stance-Marker ("It could be argued that ...").
  • Nutze akademische Verben in Topic Sentences ("This essay examines ...", "The evidence suggests that ...").
  • Vermeide absolute Aussagen ohne Beleg - "All / Everyone / Never" durch "the majority / many / rarely" ersetzen (Hedging schützt vor Inhalts-Fehlern).
  • Achte auf Konsistenz des Registers: kein "kids" / "stuff" / "a lot of" in einem formellen Letter to the Editor.

Typische Fehler

  • Hedging überverbraucht - der Text wird vage und verliert Überzeugungskraft.
  • Booster und Hedging im selben Satz vermischt ("It is clearly possible that ...").
  • Umgangssprachliche Füller ("kind of", "sort of", "a lot of") im formellen Text.
  • Akademische Verben falsch konstruiert ("discuss about", "emphasise on" - korrekt "discuss", "emphasise").
  • Nominalstil übertrieben - der Satz wird ein Wortungetüm ohne klares Verb.

Aktive Wiederholung

Take five categorical sentences (e.g. "Social media destroys concentration."). Rewrite each with appropriate hedging or a stance marker, and replace one weak verb with an academic verb. Then mark which one sentence deserves a booster instead, and justify why.
