Section A of AS Unit 3 is the qualification's grammar paper, and it is unlike anything else in it. Where every other component asks you to write about texts, this one asks you to demonstrate control of the language itself: to construct sentences that show the meaning and use of verbs, prepositions, connectives and clauses, and then to identify and describe grammatical features in a piece of accurately-written Welsh, label and build sentences to instruction, CORRECT ERRORS AND EXPLAIN THEM, combine sentences, build a paragraph and imitate a writing pattern. The specification names the ground it draws on: mutations, pronouns, adjectives, nouns, prepositions, verbs, adverbs, clauses, connectives, idioms and syntax. Y treigladau are the largest and most examinable part of that list, and they get two of this topic's five sections. Unit 3 is worth 15% of the A level, splits AO2 6.9 and AO3 8.1, and allows no dictionary.

basic level
This is the one component in the qualification that can be revised to completion, because the ground is finite and named. Work the mutations first — they carry more of the paper than anything else and they are the errors an examiner sees fastest. Then the clause types, then the connectives, then the idioms. A page a week for a year covers all of it, and unlike literary revision none of it goes stale.

The A2 statement asks for a MORE PRECISE knowledge of grammatical rules and correct language, and the payoff is not confined to Unit 3. AO3 is 38.1% of the A level, and every mark of it — the NEA, the Unit 5 essays, Unit 6 Section B — is written in the same language this section examines. A candidate whose mutations are automatic is protecting nearly two fifths of the qualification, not one section of one paper.

Part (a) asks for sentences that clearly demonstrate the meaning and use of prepositions. Take the preposition 'am' and build the answer properly.
“Roedd hi'n siarad am y llyfr.” The preposition is present and the sentence is correct. But the meaning of am is not visible: it could be replaced by several other prepositions and the sentence would still work. Nothing about this sentence teaches anybody what am does, which is precisely the demonstration the question asked for.
Am carries at least three distinct jobs. Topic: “Buom yn dadlau am oriau am yr un peth.” Duration: the same sentence's first am. Cost or exchange: “Prynais y llyfr am bumpunt.” Intention: “Rwy'n bwriadu mynd am dro.” Writing two or three sentences that put different senses side by side demonstrates the RANGE of a word's use, which is the harder half of the instruction.
Welsh prepositions conjugate for person, and demonstrating that is demonstrating use: amdanaf i, amdanat ti, amdano fe, amdani hi, amdanom ni, amdanoch chi, amdanynt hwy. A sentence such as “Doedd neb wedi sôn amdani hi o gwbl” shows the inflected form doing work that the uninflected form could not do. An examiner reading part (a) is looking for exactly this kind of evidence of control.
Am is one of the prepositions that takes the soft mutation: am ben, not am pen; am dro, not am tro; am geiniog, not am ceiniog. Building a sentence whose mutation is visible — “Doedd dim byd i'w ddweud am geiniog neu ddwy” — demonstrates the syntactic behaviour as well as the semantic range, and it protects you if the marker is reading for mutation.
Two or three short sentences, chosen so that between them they show a different sense, an inflected form and the mutation the preposition triggers. That is more demonstration than a single long sentence can carry, and it is quicker to write. Apply the same three-part test to the other three items in part (a) — verbs, connectives and clauses — and part (a) becomes a template rather than an improvisation.
Result: A demonstrating sentence shows three things a containing sentence does not: a distinguishable sense of the word, its inflected form where it has one, and the mutation it triggers. Two or three short sentences carry more demonstration than one long one, and the same three-part test applies to verbs, connectives and clauses.

Write the eleven named features down the side of a page and give each one a single line: your own one-sentence statement of the rule, and one example you have written yourself. Then close the page and rebuild it from memory once a week for a term. It is about two hours of work in total and it covers the whole of Section A's declared ground — which is a return no literary revision can offer.

Y Treigladau: the three systems set against the radical consonants
Show that a mutation carries information rather than decorating a phrase, using the possessive ei and its three behaviours.
Ei ben means his head; ei phen means her head. The word pen is identical in both, the possessive ei is identical in both, and the entire difference in meaning is carried by the mutation: soft for the masculine, aspirate for the feminine. Drop the mutation and the phrase becomes ambiguous. This is the cleanest possible demonstration that mutation is grammar and not ornament.
It works identically on t and c: ei dad and ei thad, his father and her father; ei gar and ei char, his car and her car. Three consonants, three pairs, and in each case the aspirate marks the feminine. On any consonant outside p, t and c the distinction disappears in the written form — ei lyfr is his book and ei llyfr is her book, but there the marker is the presence or absence of soft mutation rather than an aspirate.
Before a vowel, neither mutation is available, so Welsh uses h-prothesis instead: ei afal is his apple, ei hafal is her apple. The same device marks ein and eu — ein hysgol, eu harian — where no gender is at stake but the h still marks the possessive. So the feminine ei is doubly equipped, aspirating three consonants and prefixing h to every vowel.
Welsh often adds an echoing pronoun: ei ben ef, ei phen hi. It is tempting to conclude that the mutation is then redundant, since hi has already said which gender is meant. It is not optional, and a marker will treat its absence as an error rather than as an economy. The echoing pronoun is emphasis; the mutation is grammar; and when the pronoun is omitted, as it constantly is, the mutation is the only thing left carrying the sense.
If Section A(b) asks you to describe a grammatical feature in the printed passage and an ei appears in it, this is the answer available: name the mutation, name what it marks, and give the contrasting form. “Treiglad llaes ar ôl y rhagenw ei (benywaidd) — ei phen, o'i gymharu ag ei ben ar gyfer y gwrywaidd.” Three clauses, complete, and it demonstrates that you know why the rule exists rather than only that it does.
Result: Ei ben / ei phen, ei dad / ei thad, ei gar / ei char: the possessive's gender is carried entirely by the mutation on p, t and c. Before vowels the same job is done by h-prothesis — ei afal / ei hafal — which also marks ein and eu. The echoing pronoun is emphasis and does not make the mutation optional.

Write the nine radicals down a page — p, t, c, b, d, g, ll, m, rh — and fill in all three columns from memory, marking the cells where no mutation exists. Then, for each of the nine, write one short phrase in each column that actually occurs. Ninety seconds a day for a fortnight makes the grid automatic, and automatic is the only useful state for it: a mutation you have to stop and compute will be lost the moment you are writing at speed under examination conditions.

Settling any mutation in five steps
Run the five-step procedure on five short sentences, naming the trigger, the mutation, the radical and the exception at every point. This is exactly the reasoning Section A(b) asks you to write down when it asks for corrections with explanations.
Trigger: i, one of the simple prepositions, which takes the soft mutation — but tref follows the article rather than the preposition here, so the relevant question is the article plus a feminine singular noun. Tref is feminine, so soft: y dref, contracted to i'r dref. Step four asks for an exception and there is none, since t is not ll or rh. Written form: i'r dref.
Trigger: yn meaning 'in', which takes the nasal mutation. Radical: Caerdydd, initial c. Nasal of c is ngh, giving Nghaerdydd. Step four: the exception here is not about the noun but about the preposition itself, which assimilates — yn becomes yng before ng and ym before m. So yng Nghaerdydd, and by the same rule ym Mangor and ym Mhontypridd. The commonest error in the language is to leave this as yn Caerdydd.
Trigger: a meaning 'and', which takes the aspirate. Radical: papur, initial p. Aspirate of p is ph, giving phapur. No exception applies. This is the trigger candidates lose most often in writing, because ordinary speech does not always sound it — but the paper is written and the marker is reading, so it must be there.
Trigger: the definite article with a feminine singular noun. Radical: llong, initial ll, and llong is feminine. Step three says the soft mutation of ll is l. Step four catches it: ll and rh do NOT soften after the article, so the form stays y llong. This sentence exists to show why step four is not optional — steps one to three, run correctly, produce the wrong answer here.
Two decisions. First, ni before clywais: the negative particles aspirate p, t and c, so clywais becomes chlywais. Second, ei followed by a vowel-initial word: the feminine ei prefixes h, so ateb becomes hateb, and the echoing hi confirms the gender. Had it been masculine the form would have been ei ateb ef, with no h at all. Both decisions are visible in one short sentence, which is why sentences like this appear on papers.
Result: Five sentences, five procedures. The one that matters most is the fourth: steps one to three produce y long from llong, and only step four — the exception that ll and rh do not soften after the article — saves it. Step four is where nearly all the lost marks are, and it is the step candidates skip once the first three become automatic.

Take any paragraph of published Welsh prose and underline every mutation in it, then write beside each one the trigger that caused it. A single paragraph typically contains between fifteen and thirty. Doing this once a week for a term converts a set of rules into a habit of noticing, and noticing is what you need in an examination, because you will not have time to run a decision procedure on every word you write.

Combine 'Roedd y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe' and 'Doedd neb wedi ei agor' three ways, and say what each version does.
“Doedd neb wedi agor y llythyr a gyrhaeddodd ddoe.” The arrival becomes a property of the letter — a way of identifying which letter is meant — and the unopened state becomes the assertion. Note the soft mutation after the relative a: cyrhaeddodd becomes gyrhaeddodd. Use this version when the reader needs to know which letter.
“Er bod y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe, doedd neb wedi ei agor.” The arrival becomes a circumstance, and er makes it a concessive one, so the sentence now carries a mild judgement: the letter had had time to be opened. Change er to ar ôl and the judgement disappears, leaving pure sequence. Same facts, different argument.
“Roedd y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe, ond doedd neb wedi ei agor.” Both statements stay assertions of equal weight, and ond states the relation between them. This is the flattest of the three and it is often the right one: a sentence that subordinates everything reads as fussy, and a paragraph needs some assertions left standing.
Nothing in the facts changed across the three versions; what changed is what the sentence is FOR. Relative subordination identifies; adverbial subordination supplies circumstance and can smuggle in judgement; coordination asserts twice and names a relation. When Section A(b) asks you to combine sentences, showing that you know this is worth more than producing one correct join.
“Roedd y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe a doedd neb wedi ei agor.” Grammatically unobjectionable and rhetorically empty: a states no relation, so the reader is left to infer one. In a paper that names connectives as an examinable feature, joining with a bare a when a relation exists is a wasted opportunity, and in an essay it is the commonest reason a paragraph reads as a list.
Result: Relative subordination identifies (y llythyr a gyrhaeddodd ddoe); adverbial subordination supplies circumstance and can carry judgement (er bod…); coordination asserts twice and names the relation (…, ond…). The bare a joins without stating a relation, which is why it is the commonest reason an essay paragraph reads as a list.

Take five pairs of short simple sentences and combine each pair three ways: as a relative clause, as an adverbial clause, and as two coordinated clauses with an explicit connective. Fifteen sentences. Then say in one line what each version foregrounds. This is the exact exercise Section A(b) sets under 'combining sentences', and it is also the skill that makes a Unit 6 essay read as argued rather than listed.

Here is the discipline the paper wants. For each faulty sentence: the correction, then the trigger, the mutation and the radical, in one sentence of Welsh. Note that not all six are mutations.
Correction: fy nghariad. Explanation: “Treiglad trwynol ar ôl y rhagenw meddiannol fy: cariad → nghariad.” This is the highest-frequency nasal trigger in the language and it is lost most often before c, because ngh is three written characters and feels like a bigger change than it is.
Correction: yng Nghaerdydd. Explanation: “Treiglad trwynol ar ôl yr arddodiad yn: Caerdydd → Nghaerdydd; ac mae yn ei hun yn troi'n yng o flaen ng.” Note that the rest of the sentence is already right — pum mlynedd carries the nasal mutation of blynedd after pum, which is a separate trigger in the same family, and a candidate who corrects it has misread the passage.
Correction: a phapur newydd. Explanation: “Treiglad llaes ar ôl y cysylltair a: papur → phapur. Mae'r ffurf hon yn gyffredin ar lafar ond yn wallus mewn ysgrifennu ffurfiol.” The second sentence is the register clause, and it is what lifts the answer above a bare rule statement.
Correction: ar y gadair. Explanation: “Treiglad meddal ar enw benywaidd unigol ar ôl y fannod: cadair → gadair.” Note what is already correct: y ferch and bach agreeing as ferch fach, both feminine soft mutations, which is why the error stands out — the writer knows the rule and applied it once.
Correction: y dyn a welais i. Explanation: “Y geiryn perthynol a sy'n gywir pan fo'r enw'n oddrych neu'n wrthrych i'r cymal; y neu yr a ddefnyddir ar gyfer perthynas anuniongyrchol.” Not a mutation at all — the mutation on welais is right either way — but the wrong particle, which is one of the five families and the one most often mistaken for a mutation error.
Correction: y tŷ. Explanation: “Acen grom goll: ty a tŷ yn eiriau gwahanol.” This is orthography rather than grammar, and it matters more in Welsh than a missing accent does in most languages, because the circumflex marks a long vowel that distinguishes words. A candidate scanning only for mutations will read straight past it.
Result: Six errors, four families: two nasal mutations (fy nghariad, yng Nghaerdydd), one aspirate with a register note (a phapur), one soft on a feminine noun (y gadair), one wrong relative particle (a welais, not y welais) and one lost circumflex (tŷ). Each explanation names the trigger, the mutation and the radical in one sentence — and two of the six are not mutation errors at all.

Write a paragraph of your own Welsh, put it away for a week, then return to it as a marker and find every error — including the ones you would defend. Write the three-component explanation for each. Doing this to your own prose is far more useful than doing it to an exercise, because your own errors are the ones that will appear in the examination, and because you will discover which of them you make by ear rather than by ignorance.
