Iaith ar Waith (Use of Language)

Section A of AS Unit 3 is the qualification's grammar paper, and it is unlike anything else in it. Where every other component asks you to write about texts, this one asks you to demonstrate control of the language itself: to construct sentences that show the meaning and use of verbs, prepositions, connectives and clauses, and then to identify and describe grammatical features in a piece of accurately-written Welsh, label and build sentences to instruction, CORRECT ERRORS AND EXPLAIN THEM, combine sentences, build a paragraph and imitate a writing pattern. The specification names the ground it draws on: mutations, pronouns, adjectives, nouns, prepositions, verbs, adverbs, clauses, connectives, idioms and syntax. Y treigladau are the largest and most examinable part of that list, and they get two of this topic's five sections. Unit 3 is worth 15% of the A level, splits AO2 6.9 and AO3 8.1, and allows no dictionary.

basic level

This is the one component in the qualification that can be revised to completion, because the ground is finite and named. Work the mutations first — they carry more of the paper than anything else and they are the errors an examiner sees fastest. Then the clause types, then the connectives, then the idioms. A page a week for a year covers all of it, and unlike literary revision none of it goes stale.

higher level

The A2 statement asks for a MORE PRECISE knowledge of grammatical rules and correct language, and the payoff is not confined to Unit 3. AO3 is 38.1% of the A level, and every mark of it — the NEA, the Unit 5 essays, Unit 6 Section B — is written in the same language this section examines. A candidate whose mutations are automatic is protecting nearly two fifths of the qualification, not one section of one paper.

Key points

Unit 3 asks for two answers, one on each section, and Section A is a COMPOSITE question — not one task but a set of small linguistic exercises inside a single question. Part (a) asks candidates to construct sentences that clearly demonstrate the meaning and use of four things: verbs, prepositions, connectives and clauses. Note the verb in that instruction. You are not being asked to define a preposition; you are being asked to write a sentence in which the preposition's meaning and use are visible. A sentence that merely contains the item is not a sentence that demonstrates it, and the difference between the two is where most of the marks in part (a) sit.
Part (b) is longer and is built on a piece of accurately-written Welsh printed on the paper. Six things may be asked of it: identify and describe grammatical features; label and construct sentences in accordance with specific guidance; correct errors with accompanying explanations; combine sentences; construct a range of sentences in a paragraph; and imitate a writing pattern. Those are six different skills and only two of them are recognition. The rest are production — you are being asked to make Welsh to order, in a particular shape, and often to say why what you made is right. That last requirement, the explanation, is what separates this paper from a school grammar exercise.
The specification names the linguistic ground the section draws on and the list is worth learning as a list, because it is a revision syllabus: mutations, pronouns, adjectives, nouns, prepositions, verbs, adverbs, clauses, connectives, idioms and syntax. Eleven items, of which the first is the largest and the most examinable, and of which the last three — connectives, idioms and syntax — are the ones most often left to look after themselves. Everything on that list is finite and can be worked through. There is no equivalent in the literary components, where the reading is never quite finished, and it makes this the one part of the qualification that can genuinely be completed.
The specification also names grammar resources, which is unusual and useful: Canllawiau Iaith a Chymorth Sillafu by J. Elwyn Hughes; Y Treigladur by D. Geraint Lewis; Llyfr Idiomau Cymraeg by R. E. Jones; Cymraeg Graenus by Phyl Brake; Ymarfer Ysgrifennu by Gwyn Thomas; Gramadeg y Gymraeg by Peter Wynn Thomas; Cymraeg Da by Heini Gruffudd; the Cysgliad software from Canolfan Bedwyr; and a set of resources on Hwb and on WJEC's own resources site. Y Treigladur in particular is a reference book about one thing, and one thing is what most of the marks in this section turn on. Note the exam condition that goes with all this: NO DICTIONARY is allowed in Unit 3.
Worked example

The difference between a sentence that contains a preposition and one that demonstrates it

Part (a) asks for sentences that clearly demonstrate the meaning and use of prepositions. Take the preposition 'am' and build the answer properly.

  1. 01The sentence that does not score

    “Roedd hi'n siarad am y llyfr.” The preposition is present and the sentence is correct. But the meaning of am is not visible: it could be replaced by several other prepositions and the sentence would still work. Nothing about this sentence teaches anybody what am does, which is precisely the demonstration the question asked for.

  2. 02Show that the preposition has more than one use

    Am carries at least three distinct jobs. Topic: “Buom yn dadlau am oriau am yr un peth.” Duration: the same sentence's first am. Cost or exchange: “Prynais y llyfr am bumpunt.” Intention: “Rwy'n bwriadu mynd am dro.” Writing two or three sentences that put different senses side by side demonstrates the RANGE of a word's use, which is the harder half of the instruction.

  3. 03Show that it inflects

    Welsh prepositions conjugate for person, and demonstrating that is demonstrating use: amdanaf i, amdanat ti, amdano fe, amdani hi, amdanom ni, amdanoch chi, amdanynt hwy. A sentence such as “Doedd neb wedi sôn amdani hi o gwbl” shows the inflected form doing work that the uninflected form could not do. An examiner reading part (a) is looking for exactly this kind of evidence of control.

  4. 04Show what it does to the following word

    Am is one of the prepositions that takes the soft mutation: am ben, not am pen; am dro, not am tro; am geiniog, not am ceiniog. Building a sentence whose mutation is visible — “Doedd dim byd i'w ddweud am geiniog neu ddwy” — demonstrates the syntactic behaviour as well as the semantic range, and it protects you if the marker is reading for mutation.

  5. 05The shape of a full answer

    Two or three short sentences, chosen so that between them they show a different sense, an inflected form and the mutation the preposition triggers. That is more demonstration than a single long sentence can carry, and it is quicker to write. Apply the same three-part test to the other three items in part (a) — verbs, connectives and clauses — and part (a) becomes a template rather than an improvisation.

Result: A demonstrating sentence shows three things a containing sentence does not: a distinguishable sense of the word, its inflected form where it has one, and the mutation it triggers. Two or three short sentences carry more demonstration than one long one, and the same three-part test applies to verbs, connectives and clauses.

Exam focus

  • Part (a) asks for sentences that DEMONSTRATE meaning and use, not sentences that merely contain the item (AO3).
  • Part (b) has six possible demands and four of them are production, not recognition.
  • The eleven named features are a finite revision syllabus: mutations, pronouns, adjectives, nouns, prepositions, verbs, adverbs, clauses, connectives, idioms, syntax.
  • No dictionary is allowed in Unit 3, so idiom and spelling must be secure in advance (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing a sentence that contains the target item without making its meaning or use visible.
  • Preparing only the recognition half of part (b) and being unable to produce a sentence to specification.
  • Leaving connectives, idioms and syntax to look after themselves because mutations feel like the whole topic.
  • Assuming a first-language speaker does not need to revise grammar for a first-language paper.

Write the eleven named features down the side of a page and give each one a single line: your own one-sentence statement of the rule, and one example you have written yourself. Then close the page and rebuild it from memory once a week for a term. It is about two hours of work in total and it covers the whole of Section A's declared ground — which is a return no literary revision can offer.

Key points

Welsh has three mutation systems and they touch different numbers of consonants. Y treiglad meddal, the soft mutation, is much the largest: it affects nine consonants — p, t, c, b, d, g, ll, m and rh — giving b, d, g, f, dd, nothing at all, l, f and r. That sixth entry is the one that surprises people: soft-mutated g is not a different sound but the absence of one, so gardd becomes ardd and gwlad becomes wlad. Y treiglad trwynol, the nasal, affects six: p, t, c, b, d and g, giving mh, nh, ngh, m, n and ng. Y treiglad llaes, the aspirate, affects only three: p, t and c, giving ph, th and ch. Nine, six and three: learning the SHAPE of the system first makes the individual changes far easier to hold.
The consonants in those lists are Welsh letters, and Welsh letters are not always the same thing as Latin ones. Ch, dd, ff, ng, ll, ph, rh and th are each a SINGLE letter of the Welsh alphabet, which is why the alphabet runs a, b, c, ch, d, dd, e, f, ff, g, ng, h, i, j, l, ll, m, n, o, p, ph, r, rh, s, t, th, u, w, y — and why a Welsh dictionary files cadw before cegin but chwarae after cyfan, since ch is its own letter and follows c. This matters practically: a mutation that turns c into ngh has not added two letters, it has substituted one letter for another, and ngh is a single unit which is why it is written that way.
Three exceptions to the soft mutation are worth learning as a set because they all concern the same two consonants. Ll and rh do NOT soften after the definite article, so a feminine noun beginning with either keeps its radical form: y llaw, y llong, y rhaff, y rhaw — against y gath from cath and y ferch from merch. They do not soften after the predicative yn either: yn llawen, yn rhad, against yn fawr from mawr. And they do not soften after mor or cyn: mor llawen, cyn rhated. Everywhere else they behave normally, which is why dy law and ei lyfr are correct — those are triggers to which the exception does not apply.
Alongside the mutations sits a smaller change that behaves like one: h-prothesis, the h added before a word beginning with a vowel. It follows the feminine ei, and also ein, eu and the contracted 'm, 'n and 'i. So ei hafal is her apple against ei afal for his; ein hysgol is our school; eu harian is their money. The feminine ei is thus doubly marked — the aspirate mutation on p, t and c, and h before a vowel — which is exactly what makes ei ben and ei phen, ei afal and ei hafal, the most useful minimal pairs in the language for showing that a mutation carries meaning rather than decorating it.
Worked example

Why ei ben and ei phen are the most useful pair in the language

Show that a mutation carries information rather than decorating a phrase, using the possessive ei and its three behaviours.

  1. 01The consonant pair

    Ei ben means his head; ei phen means her head. The word pen is identical in both, the possessive ei is identical in both, and the entire difference in meaning is carried by the mutation: soft for the masculine, aspirate for the feminine. Drop the mutation and the phrase becomes ambiguous. This is the cleanest possible demonstration that mutation is grammar and not ornament.

  2. 02The same pair on the other two aspirate consonants

    It works identically on t and c: ei dad and ei thad, his father and her father; ei gar and ei char, his car and her car. Three consonants, three pairs, and in each case the aspirate marks the feminine. On any consonant outside p, t and c the distinction disappears in the written form — ei lyfr is his book and ei llyfr is her book, but there the marker is the presence or absence of soft mutation rather than an aspirate.

  3. 03The vowel case

    Before a vowel, neither mutation is available, so Welsh uses h-prothesis instead: ei afal is his apple, ei hafal is her apple. The same device marks ein and eu — ein hysgol, eu harian — where no gender is at stake but the h still marks the possessive. So the feminine ei is doubly equipped, aspirating three consonants and prefixing h to every vowel.

  4. 04Why the echoing pronoun does not make it optional

    Welsh often adds an echoing pronoun: ei ben ef, ei phen hi. It is tempting to conclude that the mutation is then redundant, since hi has already said which gender is meant. It is not optional, and a marker will treat its absence as an error rather than as an economy. The echoing pronoun is emphasis; the mutation is grammar; and when the pronoun is omitted, as it constantly is, the mutation is the only thing left carrying the sense.

  5. 05The exam use

    If Section A(b) asks you to describe a grammatical feature in the printed passage and an ei appears in it, this is the answer available: name the mutation, name what it marks, and give the contrasting form. “Treiglad llaes ar ôl y rhagenw ei (benywaidd) — ei phen, o'i gymharu ag ei ben ar gyfer y gwrywaidd.” Three clauses, complete, and it demonstrates that you know why the rule exists rather than only that it does.

Result: Ei ben / ei phen, ei dad / ei thad, ei gar / ei char: the possessive's gender is carried entirely by the mutation on p, t and c. Before vowels the same job is done by h-prothesis — ei afal / ei hafal — which also marks ein and eu. The echoing pronoun is emphasis and does not make the mutation optional.

  • Soft-mutated g disappears entirely: gardd becomes ardd, gwlad becomes wlad.

Typical mistakes

  • Forgetting that soft-mutated g is a deletion rather than a substitution, and writing y gardd for what should be yr ardd after a trigger.
  • Softening ll or rh after the definite article: y law for y llaw.
  • Treating ch, dd, ll, ng, ph, rh and th as two letters each, which produces wrong alphabetical order and wrong mutation forms.
  • Losing h-prothesis after ein and eu, which removes the only marker in the phrase.

Active revision

Write the nine radicals down a page — p, t, c, b, d, g, ll, m, rh — and fill in all three columns from memory, marking the cells where no mutation exists. Then, for each of the nine, write one short phrase in each column that actually occurs. Ninety seconds a day for a fortnight makes the grid automatic, and automatic is the only useful state for it: a mutation you have to stop and compute will be lost the moment you are writing at speed under examination conditions.

Key points

Knowing the three grids is half the job; the other half is knowing what fires them. The soft mutation has by far the most triggers and they fall into recognisable families. A feminine singular noun after the definite article: cath becomes y gath, merch becomes y ferch. An adjective after a feminine singular noun: merch dda, cath fach. After the numerals dau and dwy: dau gi, dwy gath. After a large group of simple prepositions — i, o, am, ar, at, gan, heb, hyd, dan, dros, drwy, wrth — as in i Gaerdydd and am dro. The direct object of an inflected verb: gwelais gi, prynodd hi feic. After predicative yn: yn fawr, yn dda. And after dy and the masculine ei: dy gar, ei ben.
The nasal mutation has far fewer triggers and they are easy to hold. The possessive fy: fy nhad, fy nghar, fy mrawd, fy nesg. The preposition yn meaning 'in', which also changes its own shape to match what follows — yng Nghymru, ym Mangor, yn Nolgellau, ym Mhontypridd, yng Ngwynedd — so that yn becomes yng before ng and ym before m. And certain numerals before blynedd, blwydd and diwrnod: pum mlynedd, can mlynedd. That is essentially the whole system, and the locative yn is where it is most often lost, because Cymru and Caerdydd are written so often that the radical form becomes visually familiar.
The aspirate mutation has the fewest triggers of all and they are worth memorising verbatim, because they are the mutation most often dropped in speech and therefore most often forgotten in writing. After a meaning 'and': bara a chaws, te a choffi. After â, gyda and tua: â chyllell, tua thri. After the feminine ei: ei phen, ei char. After the numerals tri and chwe: tri chi, tri phen, chwe cheiniog. After the negative particles ni and na: ni chlywais, na phoenwch. And after na meaning 'than': gwell na thywydd fel hyn. Six families, and the first of them — the a of ordinary coordination — is the one that appears in almost every paragraph anybody writes.
Two combined rules repay learning as rules rather than as lists. First, the negative particles ni and na aspirate p, t and c but SOFTEN everything else: ni chlywais with the aspirate, but ni welais from gwelais and ni ddaeth from daeth, both soft. Second, the relative particle a takes the soft mutation and the negative relative na or nad follows the same combined pattern as the negatives: y llyfr a brynais, y dyn na welodd neb. Getting these right is what makes a subordinate clause read as written by somebody in control rather than by somebody assembling it, and subordinate clauses are precisely where an examiner looks.

Settling any mutation in five steps

Worked example

A mutation decision chain over five sentences

Run the five-step procedure on five short sentences, naming the trigger, the mutation, the radical and the exception at every point. This is exactly the reasoning Section A(b) asks you to write down when it asks for corrections with explanations.

  1. 01Aeth hi i'r dref efo'i chwaer

    Trigger: i, one of the simple prepositions, which takes the soft mutation — but tref follows the article rather than the preposition here, so the relevant question is the article plus a feminine singular noun. Tref is feminine, so soft: y dref, contracted to i'r dref. Step four asks for an exception and there is none, since t is not ll or rh. Written form: i'r dref.

  2. 02Mae hi'n byw yng Nghaerdydd

    Trigger: yn meaning 'in', which takes the nasal mutation. Radical: Caerdydd, initial c. Nasal of c is ngh, giving Nghaerdydd. Step four: the exception here is not about the noun but about the preposition itself, which assimilates — yn becomes yng before ng and ym before m. So yng Nghaerdydd, and by the same rule ym Mangor and ym Mhontypridd. The commonest error in the language is to leave this as yn Caerdydd.

  3. 03Prynodd hi'r llyfr a phapur newydd

    Trigger: a meaning 'and', which takes the aspirate. Radical: papur, initial p. Aspirate of p is ph, giving phapur. No exception applies. This is the trigger candidates lose most often in writing, because ordinary speech does not always sound it — but the paper is written and the marker is reading, so it must be there.

  4. 04Doedd neb wedi gweld y llong yn gadael

    Trigger: the definite article with a feminine singular noun. Radical: llong, initial ll, and llong is feminine. Step three says the soft mutation of ll is l. Step four catches it: ll and rh do NOT soften after the article, so the form stays y llong. This sentence exists to show why step four is not optional — steps one to three, run correctly, produce the wrong answer here.

  5. 05Ni chlywais i mo'i hateb hi

    Two decisions. First, ni before clywais: the negative particles aspirate p, t and c, so clywais becomes chlywais. Second, ei followed by a vowel-initial word: the feminine ei prefixes h, so ateb becomes hateb, and the echoing hi confirms the gender. Had it been masculine the form would have been ei ateb ef, with no h at all. Both decisions are visible in one short sentence, which is why sentences like this appear on papers.

Result: Five sentences, five procedures. The one that matters most is the fourth: steps one to three produce y long from llong, and only step four — the exception that ll and rh do not soften after the article — saves it. Step four is where nearly all the lost marks are, and it is the step candidates skip once the first three become automatic.

Exam focus

  • Soft triggers fall into families: article plus feminine noun, adjective after feminine noun, dau and dwy, the simple prepositions, object of an inflected verb, predicative yn, dy and masculine ei (AO3).
  • The nasal system is small: fy, locative yn (which itself becomes yng or ym), and numerals before blynedd.
  • Aspirate triggers are the fewest and the most often dropped: a, â, gyda, tua, feminine ei, tri, chwe, ni, na.
  • Ni and na aspirate p, t, c and soften everything else — one rule covering both halves.

Typical mistakes

  • Writing yn Caerdydd rather than yng Nghaerdydd, because the radical form is so familiar in print.
  • Dropping the aspirate after a meaning 'and', which is standard in speech and an error in writing.
  • Softening after the article when the noun is masculine — y ci, not y gi.

A single paragraph typically contains between fifteen and thirty. Doing this once a week for a term converts a set of rules into a habit of noticing, and noticing is what you need in an examination, because you will not have time to run a decision procedure on every word you write.

Key points

Welsh subordination runs on three clause types and the paper expects them by name. Y cymal enwol, the noun clause, is what a verb of saying or knowing takes as its object, and it is built with bod for statements of fact — dywedodd fod y tywydd yn braf — or with mai in the north and taw in the south when a particular element is emphasised: gwn mai hi a ddaeth. Y cymal perthynol, the relative clause, attaches to a noun: a with the soft mutation when the noun is subject or object, y or yr when the relation is oblique, and na or nad in the negative — y llyfr a brynais, y tŷ y bûm yn byw ynddo, y dyn na welodd neb. Y cymal adferfol, the adverbial clause, is introduced by pan, os, er, tra, nes or am.
Combining sentences, which the specification names as its own task, is really a test of whether you can choose between those three. Two short sentences can nearly always be joined more than one way, and the versions are not equivalent. Subordinating the second into a relative clause makes it a property of a thing; subordinating it into an adverbial clause makes it a circumstance; coordinating with ond or felly keeps both as assertions and states a relation between them. A candidate asked to combine two sentences should be able to produce two different combinations and say what each one foregrounds — that is what turns the exercise from a mechanical join into a demonstration of syntax.
Connectives are on the specification's list in their own right and they are undervalued. Welsh has a rich stock of them and most candidates use four: ond, felly, oherwydd and hefyd. The ones that earn marks in a Unit 5 or Unit 6 essay are the ones that show the SHAPE of an argument: serch hynny and er hynny for concession, yn ogystal â hynny for addition, o ganlyniad for consequence, hynny yw for restatement, ar y llaw arall for contrast, at hynny for accumulation, beth bynnag for dismissal, yn wir for confirmation. Twelve of these, used accurately, will do more for the readability of an essay than any amount of vocabulary.
Idiom is the last named feature and it is the one no dictionary would help with anyway, since none is allowed. Welsh idiom is dense and it is the surest sign in a script that the writer thinks in the language rather than translating into it: mynd i'r afael â, to grapple with; taro deuddeg, to be exactly right; codi bwganod, to raise false alarms; rhoi'r ffidil yn y to, to give up; dal pen rheswm, to hold a proper conversation; yn sgil, in the wake of; er gwaethaf, despite. A handful used correctly is worth far more than a list used approximately, because an idiom slightly wrong is more conspicuous than a plain word slightly wrong.
Worked example

One pair of sentences, three combinations, three different meanings

Combine 'Roedd y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe' and 'Doedd neb wedi ei agor' three ways, and say what each version does.

  1. 01As a relative clause

    “Doedd neb wedi agor y llythyr a gyrhaeddodd ddoe.” The arrival becomes a property of the letter — a way of identifying which letter is meant — and the unopened state becomes the assertion. Note the soft mutation after the relative a: cyrhaeddodd becomes gyrhaeddodd. Use this version when the reader needs to know which letter.

  2. 02As an adverbial clause

    “Er bod y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe, doedd neb wedi ei agor.” The arrival becomes a circumstance, and er makes it a concessive one, so the sentence now carries a mild judgement: the letter had had time to be opened. Change er to ar ôl and the judgement disappears, leaving pure sequence. Same facts, different argument.

  3. 03As two coordinated clauses

    “Roedd y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe, ond doedd neb wedi ei agor.” Both statements stay assertions of equal weight, and ond states the relation between them. This is the flattest of the three and it is often the right one: a sentence that subordinates everything reads as fussy, and a paragraph needs some assertions left standing.

  4. 04Say what changed and why it matters

    Nothing in the facts changed across the three versions; what changed is what the sentence is FOR. Relative subordination identifies; adverbial subordination supplies circumstance and can smuggle in judgement; coordination asserts twice and names a relation. When Section A(b) asks you to combine sentences, showing that you know this is worth more than producing one correct join.

  5. 05The version to avoid

    “Roedd y llythyr wedi cyrraedd ddoe a doedd neb wedi ei agor.” Grammatically unobjectionable and rhetorically empty: a states no relation, so the reader is left to infer one. In a paper that names connectives as an examinable feature, joining with a bare a when a relation exists is a wasted opportunity, and in an essay it is the commonest reason a paragraph reads as a list.

Result: Relative subordination identifies (y llythyr a gyrhaeddodd ddoe); adverbial subordination supplies circumstance and can carry judgement (er bod…); coordination asserts twice and names the relation (…, ond…). The bare a joins without stating a relation, which is why it is the commonest reason an essay paragraph reads as a list.

Exam focus

  • Name the three clause types and build each on demand: cymal enwol with bod or mai/taw, cymal perthynol with a, y/yr, na/nad, cymal adferfol with pan, os, er, tra, nes (AO3).
  • Combining sentences is a choice between subordination types; produce two versions and say what each foregrounds.
  • A dozen accurate connectives shape an argument better than any amount of vocabulary (AO3).
  • Idiom is examined and no dictionary is allowed — a small accurate stock beats a long approximate one.

Typical mistakes

  • Using mai or taw where a plain bod clause is wanted, which over-emphasises and reads as strain.
  • Losing the soft mutation after the relative a, especially when the clause is long.
  • Rotating between four connectives for a whole essay, so that the argument's shape is never signalled.
  • Deploying an idiom in a slightly wrong form, which is more conspicuous than not using one at all.

Fifteen sentences. Then say in one line what each version foregrounds. Exam technique: correcting an error and explaining it#

Key points

The instruction is 'correcting errors with accompanying explanations', and the second half of it is where the difference between candidates shows. Producing the right form is something a fluent speaker often does by ear; saying WHY it is right requires that the rule has been learned as a rule. An answer that gives only the correction has done the easier half of the task and will be marked as having done half of it. An answer that gives the correction and then names the trigger, the mutation and the radical has demonstrated the knowledge the question was set to find.
A complete explanation has three components and they can be written in one sentence. Name the trigger — the word or the grammatical context that causes the change. Name the mutation — meddal, trwynol or llaes. Show the change — radical form, arrow, mutated form. So: “Treiglad trwynol ar ôl yr arddodiad yn: Caerdydd → Nghaerdydd, ac mae yn ei hun yn newid i yng o flaen ng.” One sentence, three components, and the fourth clause there is doing extra work by naming the assimilation that candidates most often miss. Practise writing the sentence, not just knowing the answer.
Not every error in a passage is a mutation, and reading everything as one is a trap. The errors likeliest to be planted fall into five families: mutations, which are the largest; gender agreement, where an adjective or an article does not match its noun; the wrong relative particle, a where y is needed or the reverse; register mismatch, where a colloquial form sits inside a formal sentence or a literary form inside a spoken one; and simple orthography, where a circumflex has been lost — tŷ against ty, gwên against gwen — and the word has become a different word. Scanning for all five is a different discipline from scanning for one.
There is one more thing that separates a good answer here from a competent one, and it costs a clause. Where the error is a form that is genuinely current in speech but wrong in writing — the missing aspirate after a, the missing nasal in yn Caerdydd — say so. “Mae'r ffurf hon yn gyffredin ar lafar ond yn wallus mewn ysgrifennu ffurfiol” demonstrates awareness of register, which is AO3's second bullet, on top of the grammatical knowledge the question asked for. It also happens to be true, and it stops the explanation reading as though speech were simply careless.
Worked example

Six planted errors, corrected and explained to specification

Here is the discipline the paper wants. For each faulty sentence: the correction, then the trigger, the mutation and the radical, in one sentence of Welsh. Note that not all six are mutations.

  1. 01Es i i'r dref efo fy cariad

    Correction: fy nghariad. Explanation: “Treiglad trwynol ar ôl y rhagenw meddiannol fy: cariad → nghariad.” This is the highest-frequency nasal trigger in the language and it is lost most often before c, because ngh is three written characters and feels like a bigger change than it is.

  2. 02Mae hi'n byw yn Caerdydd ers pum mlynedd

    Correction: yng Nghaerdydd. Explanation: “Treiglad trwynol ar ôl yr arddodiad yn: Caerdydd → Nghaerdydd; ac mae yn ei hun yn troi'n yng o flaen ng.” Note that the rest of the sentence is already right — pum mlynedd carries the nasal mutation of blynedd after pum, which is a separate trigger in the same family, and a candidate who corrects it has misread the passage.

  3. 03Prynodd hi'r llyfr a papur newydd

    Correction: a phapur newydd. Explanation: “Treiglad llaes ar ôl y cysylltair a: papur → phapur. Mae'r ffurf hon yn gyffredin ar lafar ond yn wallus mewn ysgrifennu ffurfiol.” The second sentence is the register clause, and it is what lifts the answer above a bare rule statement.

  4. 04Roedd y ferch fach yn eistedd ar y cadair

    Correction: ar y gadair. Explanation: “Treiglad meddal ar enw benywaidd unigol ar ôl y fannod: cadair → gadair.” Note what is already correct: y ferch and bach agreeing as ferch fach, both feminine soft mutations, which is why the error stands out — the writer knows the rule and applied it once.

  5. 05Dyma'r dyn y welais i ddoe

    Correction: y dyn a welais i. Explanation: “Y geiryn perthynol a sy'n gywir pan fo'r enw'n oddrych neu'n wrthrych i'r cymal; y neu yr a ddefnyddir ar gyfer perthynas anuniongyrchol.” Not a mutation at all — the mutation on welais is right either way — but the wrong particle, which is one of the five families and the one most often mistaken for a mutation error.

  6. 06Roedd y ty yn wag ers misoedd

    Correction: y tŷ. Explanation: “Acen grom goll: ty a tŷ yn eiriau gwahanol.” This is orthography rather than grammar, and it matters more in Welsh than a missing accent does in most languages, because the circumflex marks a long vowel that distinguishes words. A candidate scanning only for mutations will read straight past it.

Result: Six errors, four families: two nasal mutations (fy nghariad, yng Nghaerdydd), one aspirate with a register note (a phapur), one soft on a feminine noun (y gadair), one wrong relative particle (a welais, not y welais) and one lost circumflex (tŷ). Each explanation names the trigger, the mutation and the radical in one sentence — and two of the six are not mutation errors at all.

Exam focus

  • Missing a lost circumflex, which changes the word rather than merely misspelling it.

Write a paragraph of your own Welsh, put it away for a week, then return to it as a marker and find every error — including the ones you would defend. Write the three-component explanation for each. Doing this to your own prose is far more useful than doing it to an exercise, because your own errors are the ones that will appear in the examination, and because you will discover which of them you make by ear rather than by ignorance.
