Key points

Psychology aims for universality - the goal that conclusions apply to everyone regardless of gender or culture - but bias can undermine this. Gender bias occurs when psychological research or theory does not represent the experience of one gender fairly, usually because it is based on, or interpreted from, the perspective of men. It matters because biased research can create and reinforce misleading stereotypes and be used to justify discrimination.
There are two forms. Alpha bias exaggerates the differences between the genders, often presenting them as fixed and inevitable (for example, some evolutionary and psychodynamic theories that treat men and women as fundamentally different); it can devalue one gender relative to the other. Beta bias minimises or ignores the differences between the genders, often by assuming that findings from studies of one gender (usually men) apply equally to the other - for example, generalising the fight-or-flight response, based largely on male animals, to women.
Androcentrism (being centred on the male) is the underlying cause of much gender bias: because psychology has historically been dominated by men, male behaviour is taken as the norm and female behaviour is judged against it, so anything that differs is seen as a deviation or deficiency. A classic example is the critique that Kohlberg's theory of moral development, based on male samples, treated men's 'justice' reasoning as more advanced and women's 'care' reasoning as inferior - which Gilligan argued was an androcentric misjudgement, not a real deficiency.
Gender bias is evaluated for its consequences and remedies. Its effects include the creation of misleading stereotypes, the validation of discriminatory practices, and the neglect of women in research. It can be reduced by recognising that a researcher's own values shape their work (reflexivity), by studying women and men together and reporting real differences honestly, and by avoiding both the exaggeration (alpha) and the erasure (beta) of genuine differences. The key exam skill is to identify whether an example shows alpha or beta bias and to link it to androcentrism and its implications.
Worked example

Diagnosing the type of gender bias

A stress researcher tests only male rats and concludes that all humans show fight-or-flight. Identify the bias and explain the problem.

Culture bias: ethnocentrism and cultural relativism#

Key points

Culture bias occurs when research is interpreted through the assumptions of the researcher's own culture, so that the norms and values of that culture are treated as universal. Because much psychological research has been conducted in Western, individualist cultures using Western participants, its conclusions may not apply to people from collectivist or non-Western cultures - yet they are often presented as if they do.
Ethnocentrism is judging other cultures by the standards and values of one's own, usually taking one's own culture as superior or as the norm. In research this produces an imposed etic: taking a technique or theory developed in one culture and applying it to another as though it were universal, when the behaviour may mean something different there. Ainsworth's Strange Situation is the classic example: designed around American norms, it labels behaviour as 'insecure' by American standards, which may misrepresent, for instance, Japanese infants who are rarely separated from their mothers.
Cultural relativism is the opposing principle: that behaviour can only be properly understood within the cultural context in which it occurs, so norms, values and even definitions of 'abnormal' are relative to a culture. It guards against ethnocentrism but, taken to an extreme, can make it difficult to identify any universal features of human behaviour or to condemn harmful practices. The distinction between an 'etic' approach (looking for universals from outside a culture) and an 'emic' approach (studying behaviour from within a single culture) captures this tension.
Culture bias is evaluated for its effects and its remedies. Its consequences include misinterpreting the behaviour of other cultures, reinforcing stereotypes and, historically, the misuse of biased tests (such as culturally loaded IQ tests). It can be reduced by conducting cross-cultural research with local researchers, developing emic (culture-specific) measures rather than imposing etic ones, and recognising the difference between an absolute universal and a culturally specific finding. Students should be able to spot an imposed etic in an example and weigh universality against cultural relativism.
Worked example

Spotting an imposed etic

A researcher uses a Western questionnaire measuring 'independence' to assess mental health in a collectivist culture and concludes that people there are less well adjusted. Analyse this using culture bias.

Result: The finding reflects an ethnocentric imposed etic, not a real deficit; cultural relativism shows the measure is inappropriate.

Key points

The free will versus determinism debate concerns whether our behaviour is freely chosen or caused by factors beyond our control. Free will is the idea that we are self-determining agents who make genuine choices; it is the position of the humanistic approach. Determinism is the idea that behaviour is caused by internal or external factors, so it is, in principle, predictable - the assumption underlying the scientific, causal explanations of most approaches.
Determinism comes in degrees and kinds. Hard determinism claims that all behaviour has a cause and that free will is an illusion - everything we do is the inevitable result of prior causes. Soft determinism (associated with William James and the cognitive approach) holds that behaviour is caused but that people can still exercise a degree of conscious choice within those constraints, so determinism and a limited free will are compatible. The types of determinism differ in what does the causing: biological determinism (genes, brain, neurochemistry), environmental determinism (conditioning and reinforcement, as in behaviourism) and psychic determinism (unconscious conflict, as in the psychodynamic approach).
The scientific status of Psychology is tied to determinism: because science seeks lawful, causal explanations that allow prediction and control, a deterministic stance makes Psychology more scientific and has produced valuable applications (such as drug therapies derived from biological determinism). Free will, by contrast, is difficult to study scientifically because a genuinely free choice would be, by definition, uncaused and unpredictable.
The debate is evaluated by weighing the two positions. Free will has intuitive and practical appeal - it fits our everyday experience of making choices and underpins moral and legal responsibility (we hold people accountable because we assume they could have chosen otherwise) - but it is hard to reconcile with the scientific evidence that behaviour has causes, and some research (e.g. Libet's studies of brain activity preceding conscious decisions) has been used to challenge it. Determinism is scientifically productive but, taken to a hard extreme, removes personal responsibility and can be used to excuse behaviour ('my genes made me do it'). Most psychologists favour an interactionist, soft-determinist position that acknowledges causes while leaving room for choice.
Worked example

Classifying determinist positions

For each explanation, state the type of determinism: (a) a phobia caused by conditioning; (b) OCD linked to low serotonin; (c) behaviour driven by unconscious conflict.

Key points

The nature-nurture debate asks how much of our behaviour is due to nature (inherited, biological factors - genes, maturation) and how much to nurture (the environment and experience - upbringing, learning, culture). The 'nativist' position emphasises nature, and the 'empiricist' position emphasises nurture, but the modern consensus is that the two interact so closely that trying to separate them is often meaningless.
Rather than asking whether nature or nurture is responsible, psychologists ask how they interact. The interactionist approach holds that nature and nurture are so intertwined that behaviour is always the product of both. The diathesis-stress model is a key example: a person may inherit a vulnerability (the diathesis) to a disorder, but the disorder only develops if it is triggered by an environmental stressor - so neither the gene nor the environment alone is sufficient. This model appears throughout the specification, notably in schizophrenia.
Epigenetics adds a further layer: it is the study of changes in how genes are expressed (switched on or off) as a result of environmental factors, without any change to the DNA sequence itself, and these changes can even be passed on to the next generation. Epigenetics shows that the environment does not merely add to what the genes provide - it can shape how the genes themselves operate, blurring the line between nature and nurture completely.
The debate is evaluated for its methods and implications. Twin, family and adoption studies attempt to disentangle nature and nurture (e.g. by comparing identical and non-identical twins), but they cannot fully separate the two because relatives share environments as well as genes, and concordance rates below 100% in identical twins are themselves evidence for the role of the environment. Extreme positions have troubling implications: strong nativism can lead to genetic determinism and even eugenics, while strong empiricism (behaviour shaping) has its own controls. The interactionist view is now dominant precisely because it fits the evidence and avoids these extremes.
Worked example

Applying the diathesis-stress model

One identical twin develops schizophrenia and the other does not, despite sharing all their genes. Explain this using the nature-nurture debate.

  1. 01The shared diathesis

    As identical twins they share the genetic vulnerability (diathesis), so both are predisposed to schizophrenia.

  2. 02The differing stressors

    Only one twin encountered the environmental stressor (e.g. a stressful life event) needed to trigger the disorder.

    Because the disorder requires both the diathesis and a trigger, the twin who met the stressor developed schizophrenia and the other did not - nature and nurture interacting.

Result: Shared genes provide the vulnerability; a differing environmental trigger explains why only one twin developed the disorder.

Key points

The holism-reductionism debate concerns the best level at which to explain behaviour. Holism argues that behaviour can only be understood by considering the whole system - the person and their context - because the whole is more than the sum of its parts (the humanistic approach and Gestalt psychology take this view). Reductionism argues the opposite: that behaviour is best explained by breaking it down into its smaller, simpler component parts, in line with the scientific principle of parsimony (preferring the simplest explanation).
Reductionism comes in levels. The idea of levels of explanation is that any behaviour can be described at several levels, from the highest and most holistic (social and cultural) down through the psychological to the lowest and most reductionist (physiological and, finally, neurochemical). Biological reductionism explains behaviour in terms of biological structures and processes (genes, neurotransmitters), as when OCD is explained by low serotonin. Environmental (stimulus-response) reductionism, from behaviourism, reduces behaviour to simple learned associations between stimuli and responses.
Neither pole is wholly right, and the levels are complementary. A reductionist, biological account of OCD (low serotonin) sits alongside a psychological account (obsessive thoughts) and a socio-cultural account (learned rituals), each capturing something the others miss. The debate is really about which level is most useful for a given purpose - a lower level for developing a drug, a higher level for understanding the meaning of the behaviour.
The debate is evaluated by weighing the strengths of each position. Reductionism is scientific: breaking behaviour into measurable variables allows rigorous, controlled experiments and has produced treatments (such as drugs), and it is parsimonious. However, it risks oversimplification - explaining a complex social behaviour purely in terms of neurons may lose the meaning of the behaviour and its context. Holism captures that meaning and complexity and suits behaviours that only make sense at the group level (such as conformity in the Stanford prison experiment), but it is harder to study scientifically and can become vague. An interactionist stance that combines levels is often the most complete.
Worked example

Explaining one behaviour at several levels

Describe aggression at a socio-cultural, a psychological and a biological level, and comment on which level is most useful.

Key points

The idiographic and nomothetic approaches describe two ways of investigating behaviour. The nomothetic approach seeks to establish general laws of behaviour that apply to everyone, by studying large samples and using quantitative, statistical methods (as in the behaviourist, cognitive and biological approaches); its aim is prediction and generalisation. The idiographic approach focuses on the individual, seeking a rich, in-depth understanding of a single person's unique experience, using qualitative methods such as case studies and unstructured interviews (as in the humanistic approach and some psychodynamic work).
Each approach has strengths and limitations, and they are complementary. The nomothetic approach is scientific and allows prediction, but by averaging across people it can lose sight of the individual and produce a superficial understanding of any one person. The idiographic approach gives a complete, meaningful picture of the individual and can generate hypotheses and challenge general laws (a single case such as HM can overturn a theory), but its findings are hard to generalise and its methods are less scientific and open to subjective interpretation. Many psychologists argue the two should be combined - using in-depth case studies to complement large-scale generalisations.
Ethical implications concern the wider consequences of research and theory, beyond the immediate effect on participants - the impact that findings may have on the people or groups represented by the research. Some research is socially sensitive: it deals with topics that have potential consequences or implications for the participants or for the groups they represent (for example, research on race and intelligence, on the causes of criminality, or on sexuality). Such research can affect public policy, reinforce discrimination or be misused, so its social consequences must be weighed alongside its scientific value.
Socially sensitive research is evaluated using the framework proposed by Sieber and Stanley, which highlights issues such as how the research question is framed, how confidentiality and consent are handled, and - crucially - how the findings might be used (or misused) by others. Psychologists must consider not only whether a study is methodologically sound but whether its likely social impact is justified. The argument is not that sensitive topics should be avoided - much valuable research (e.g. into the reliability of eyewitness testimony, or the effects of early institutional care) is socially sensitive - but that researchers have a responsibility to anticipate and minimise potential harm to the groups concerned.
Worked example

Weighing a socially sensitive study

A study reports a genetic marker associated with aggression. Explain why this is socially sensitive and what responsibilities the researchers have.

    Findings linking genes to aggression have implications beyond the participants - they could be used to label groups, influence sentencing or justify discrimination.

    The research may have genuine value (e.g. understanding and treating aggression), so it need not be abandoned, but the researchers are responsible for reporting it carefully to minimise harm to the groups concerned.

Result: The study is socially sensitive because of its potential misuse; the researchers must weigh its value against the risk and report responsibly.
