Prescribed film: Paper 2 Section C

This topic carries Paper 2 Section C, the written response to a film, which is worth 45 marks and is attempted only by candidates who have chosen the combination of one literary text and one film. A candidate who studies two literary texts answers both essays in Section B and does not attempt Section C at all; two films is not a permitted combination, so no candidate ever writes two film essays. There is a choice of two questions for the chosen film, all questions are set in Greek and must be answered in Greek, and the same three grids apply as in Section B: critical and analytical response out of 20, range of grammatical structures and vocabulary out of 15, and accuracy of language out of 10, with a recommended 270 to 320 words. Appendix 1 prescribes five feature-length films. This topic names them accurately, teaches the analytical vocabulary Greek uses for cinema, and shows how to build evidence out of sequences a student has actually watched. It invents no dialogue and no plot detail, because a fabricated line attributed to a real film is a false statement about a real work.

basic level

At first-year standard the expectation is an organised response that answers the question, supports each point with something that actually happens on screen, and is written in correct if simple Greek.

higher level

The full A-Level expects analysis of how the film is made as well as of what it shows — framing, editing, sound, performance — connected to what the film means rather than listed alongside it.

Fig. 1Appendix 1 of the 2018 specification; all five are feature length. Confirm the list current for the series you are sitting. Two points worth noting from the table itself: three of the five were released in 2013 and two in 2015, so the prescribed cinema is contemporary rather than classic; and two of the five are directed by women, which is a fact about the recent Greek industry rather than about the list. Studying the first of these films closes Το ρεμπέτικο as a Paper 1 research subject.

Key points

The structural rule comes first because it decides whether this section exists for you at all. Two discrete works must be studied and they must be either two literary texts or one literary text and one film. Students answering questions on two literary texts do both in Section B and do not complete Section C. Students answering on one text and one film write the text essay in Section B and the film essay in Section C. Two films is not permitted under any circumstances. There is a choice of two questions for the chosen film, and the mark scheme is identical to Section B's: 20 for critical and analytical response, 15 for range, 10 for accuracy, with a guide length of 270 to 320 words.
The five films prescribed in Appendix 1 of the 2018 specification are Ουζερί Τσιτσάνης, directed by Μανούσος Μανουσάκης, 2015; Νοτιάς, directed by Τάσος Μπουλμέτης, 2015; September, directed by Πέννυ Παναγιωτοπούλου, 2013; Η αιώνια επιστροφή του Αντώνη Παρασκευά, directed by Ελίνα Ψύκου, 2013; and Μικρά Αγγλία, directed by Παντελής Βούλγαρης, 2013. All are feature length. Two of the five are directed by women, which is worth noticing given how the Greek industry is often described. Confirm the list current for the series you are sitting, because prescribed-work lists are revised between issues of a specification.
The research-collision rule applies here with particular force and it is the single most consequential planning point in this topic. The independent research for Paper 1 Section C must not relate to, or make reference to, either work studied for Paper 2. Ουζερί Τσιτσάνης takes its title from a rebetiko composer and is built around that musical world, so a candidate who studies it cannot take Το ρεμπέτικο as a research subject. That is not a subtlety to be discovered in the second year; it is a decision to be made in the first term, alongside the choice of research subject, and it may be the deciding factor between two films you like equally.
Choosing a film should be done on the same criterion as choosing a text: which one will you be able to write four pieces of located evidence about under examination conditions. A film you have watched twice, with a notebook, is worth more than a film you admire and have seen once. Watch the chosen film at least three times over the course: once for the story, once with a notebook for structure and sequence, and once for technique with the sound off for part of it, because that is the fastest way to notice framing and editing that you otherwise absorb without registering. Everything you can say about how a film is made is AO4 material that a candidate who has only watched the story cannot produce.
Worked example

Building the twelve-sequence evidence list

Show what a single entry in a usable evidence list looks like, and why each of its four parts is there.

  1. 01Part one: the position in the film

Not a timecode, which you will not remember, but a position in the structure: στην αρχή, μετά την πρώτη σύγκρουση, λίγο πριν το τέλος, στη μέση της ταινίας. An examiner does not need a minute count; they need to know that you can place the sequence, which is what distinguishes someone who has watched the film from someone who has read about it. Two or three words.

  2. 02Part two: what happens, in one clause, in the present

Greek narrates film in the present, as it narrates literature: ο ήρωας φεύγει από το σπίτι χωρίς να μιλήσει, η κάμερα μένει στο άδειο δωμάτιο. One clause is the discipline; the second clause, if you need one, should be the consequence rather than more description. The reason for the limit is that in a 300-word essay a two-clause description leaves no room for the claim, and the claim is what is marked.

  3. 03Part three: one technical observation

This is the part that separates a film essay from a plot summary, and it is why the third viewing exists. You do not need to be a film scholar; you need one accurate observation per sequence, expressed in Greek, and the vocabulary for it is in the next section.

  4. 04Part four: two claims the sequence could support

Two, not one, and they should be different in kind — one about theme or character, one about how the film works. The reason for two is that you do not know which question you will get, and a piece of evidence prepared for one claim is often unusable for another. Twelve sequences with two claims each is twenty-four possible arguments, which is more than any single essay needs and exactly the margin you want.

Result: Entry shape: [position in the structure] / [one clause, present tense, what happens] / [one technical observation in Greek] / [claim A about theme or character; claim B about how the film works]. Twelve of these is a complete preparation for Section C and takes about two hours to build.

Exam focus

  • Section C exists only for the text-plus-film combination. Two films is never permitted (AO4).
  • Learn the five titles and directors accurately in Greek. A misspelled director is an accuracy error as well as a knowledge one.
  • Studying Ουζερί Τσιτσάνης closes Το ρεμπέτικο as a research subject. Decide both in the first term.
  • Watch the chosen film three times: story, structure with a notebook, technique.

Typical mistakes

  • Planning to answer on two films, which the specification forbids outright.
  • Choosing the film that is easiest to enjoy rather than the one you can evidence.
  • Discovering the Ουζερί Τσιτσάνης and Το ρεμπέτικο collision after the research has begun.
  • Watching the film once and writing about its story, which caps AO4 because technique is half the material.

Active revision

Watch your chosen film for the third time with a notebook and record twelve sequences: where each falls in the running time, what happens in one clause, and one thing about how it is filmed or cut. Twelve sequences with a technical note each is enough evidence for any question the paper can set, and building the list is a two-hour job that pays for itself in the examination.

Cinematic terminology in Greek, and what it is for#

●●○StandardLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Paper 2 — terminology for literary and cinematic analysis is named in the AO3 range grid, with examples including camera technique, hand-held camera and use of black and whiteLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The specification's own guidance on the range grid names cinematic terminology explicitly and even gives examples — camera technique, hand-held camera, the use of black and white — which tells you that this vocabulary is scored rather than decorative. The camera and the shot: η κάμερα, το πλάνο the shot, το κοντινό πλάνο the close-up, το γενικό or το ευρύ πλάνο the wide shot, το μέσο πλάνο the medium shot, το μακρύ πλάνο the long take, η λήψη the take, το κάδρο the frame, η γωνία λήψης the camera angle, η κάμερα στο χέρι hand-held camera, το τράβελινγκ the tracking shot, το ζουμ, η εστίαση focus, το βάθος πεδίου depth of field.
Editing, sound and image: το μοντάζ the editing, η σεκάνς the sequence, η μετάβαση the transition, το κοψίματα or, more usually, οι τομές the cuts, η φωτογραφία the cinematography, ο φωτισμός the lighting, το ασπρόμαυρο black and white, το χρώμα, η μουσική επένδυση the score, ο ήχος, η σιωπή, η αφήγηση εκτός κάδρου voice-over. Performance and staging: ο σκηνοθέτης the director, ο ηθοποιός and η ηθοποιός, η ερμηνεία the performance, ο ρόλος, τα σκηνικά the sets, τα κοστούμια, η σκηνοθεσία the direction, το σενάριο the screenplay, ο σεναριογράφος.
Structure and reception: η πλοκή the plot, η αφήγηση narration, η δομή, η σκηνή the scene, η αρχή and το τέλος, η κορύφωση the climax, η ανατροπή the twist, το φλας μπακ, ο ρυθμός the pace, η ατμόσφαιρα, το είδος the genre, ο συμβολισμός, το θέμα. And for the reception layer that an AO4 answer sometimes needs: το φεστιβάλ, η κριτική the review or criticism, το κοινό the audience, η υποδοχή the reception, η διανομή the distribution, το box office is normally rendered as η εισπρακτική επιτυχία.
As with literary terminology, the vocabulary earns marks only inside a claim. Το μοντάζ είναι γρήγορο is an observation and earns almost nothing; το γρήγορο μοντάζ στη σκηνή της αναχώρησης λειτουργεί σε αντίθεση με τα μακριά πλάνα του πρώτου μέρους, τονίζοντας ότι ο χρόνος πλέον πιέζει τον ήρωα is an argument, uses three terms, contains a gerund and makes a claim about meaning. Three constructions do most of the work: λειτουργεί ως or λειτουργεί σε αντίθεση με, μέσω plus the genitive, and ο τρόπος με τον οποίο. Eight accurate terms inside claims, across three hundred words, secures a whole strand of the fifteen-mark grid.
Worked example

Turning four technical observations into four arguments

You have noted four things about your film: a long take, a cut on sound, a close-up held past the point of comfort, and the absence of a score in one sequence. Turn each into a sentence that a range grid and an AO4 grid could both reward.

  1. 01The long take: name what refusing to cut does

Two terms, το μακρύ πλάνο and το μοντάζ, a με αποτέλεσμα να construction, and a claim about the viewer's experience. The general principle behind it is worth internalising: a technical choice is interesting for what it refuses as much as for what it does.

  2. 02The sound cut: name the relation between image and sound

Γεγονός που attaches the claim; η αφήγηση is the second term; and the claim is about structure, that the technique connects what the story separates. This is a genuinely analytical observation and it costs one sentence.

  3. 03The held close-up: name the discomfort and say what it is for

Note απ' όσο, the elided comparative, and η υπέρβαση, the overrunning, as the abstract noun that lets the claim be made. The observation is about duration rather than content, which is exactly the kind of thing a candidate who has watched the film three times can say and one who has watched it once cannot.

  4. 04The absent score: name what is not there

Θα τη ζητούσε is a conditional, would have called for it, with a clitic before it; and the claim is that a technical absence transfers judgement to the audience. Absences are the most under-used evidence in film essays, and they are the hardest for an examiner to believe a candidate got from a summary.

Result: Four sentences, nine technical terms, four constructions the range grid names — με αποτέλεσμα να twice, γεγονός που, a conditional with a clitic — and four claims each of which depends on its technical observation. That is roughly a third of a 300-word essay.

Exam focus

  • The range grid names cinematic terminology and gives its own examples. It is scored (AO3).
  • Four families: camera and shot; editing, sound and image; performance and staging; structure and reception.
  • Put every term inside a claim.
  • Το πλάνο is the shot; η σκηνή is the scene; η σεκάνς is the sequence. They are not interchangeable.

Typical mistakes

  • Confusing το πλάνο, the shot, with η σκηνή, the scene, or with τα σκηνικά, the sets.
  • Listing techniques without saying what any of them does.
  • Using English terms inside a Greek essay when the Greek exists, which the grid cannot reward.
  • Describing the score as ωραία, which is an opinion about you rather than an observation about the film.

Active revision

Take three sequences from your film and write, for each, one Greek sentence that names two technical features and makes one claim about meaning that depends on them. Then remove the technical terms from each sentence and check that what remains is either false or empty. If the sentence survives their removal, the terms were decoration.

§ 03

Evidence as the described sequence, and the honesty rule for film#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Paper 2 — students must not take any documentation relating to the works into the examination; evidence must justify points of viewLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The same rule that governs literary evidence governs film evidence, and for the same reason: nothing may be brought into the examination room, so everything is produced from memory. That makes quotation unreliable and description reliable. A remembered line of dialogue is exactly the kind of thing memory reconstructs rather than retrieves, and a line attributed to a character who did not say it is a false statement about a real film. The usable unit is the described sequence: located in the structure, described in one clause in the present tense, with one technical observation, and connected explicitly to a claim.
Film offers one advantage over literature here, which is that what is on the screen is often more memorable than what is on the page, and specifically that the visual and aural detail is more distinctive. A candidate who cannot recall a line can very often recall that the camera stayed on an empty chair, that the scene was shot from behind, that the music stopped, that the character was framed at the edge of the picture. Those are all evidence, they are all checkable, and they are all things only a viewer knows. Building the twelve-sequence list described earlier is precisely the exercise that converts this advantage into marks.
The claim-connecting verbs from the literary topic apply unchanged, with two additions particular to film. Δείχνει, υποδηλώνει, φανερώνει, επιβεβαιώνει, αντιτίθεται σε and λειτουργεί ως all work. To them add τονίζει, emphasises, which is what most technical choices do; and προετοιμάζει, prepares or sets up, which is the verb for anything that pays off later. A film essay that can say ο τρόπος με τον οποίο κινηματογραφείται η πρώτη συνάντηση προετοιμάζει την τελευταία has made a structural argument, and structural arguments are what the top AO4 band means by conclusions that link together.
One further caution belongs to this topic specifically. Several of the prescribed films are set against real historical or social circumstances in Greece, and a candidate who has studied the relevant theme will be tempted to write about the history rather than about the film. Resist it. The question is about the film, and historical context earns marks only where it is used to interpret something the film does — a choice of setting, an omission, a framing. The formula that keeps you honest is: the film shows X; the historical record contains Y; the interesting question is why the film chose to show X. That question is about the film and it is exactly the kind the AO4 grid calls perceptive.
Worked example

Using a historical setting without writing about history

Your film is set against a period you have also studied as a theme. Write the two sentences that use the history to interpret the film rather than to replace it.

  1. 01Establish what the film shows, in film terms

Επιλέγει, chooses, is the crucial verb: it treats the film as having made a decision rather than as having simply depicted something. Η οπτική γωνία, the point of view, is a term the range grid can see. Nothing in this sentence is about history; it is about a choice.

  2. 02State the historical fact plainly and briefly, with no interpretation

Ιστορικά, η περίοδος περιλαμβάνει και [name a documented element the film does not centre on]. One sentence, flat, dated if you can date it. The temptation is to write three sentences here because you know the history; resist it, because the AO4 grid for this paper is about the work, and every sentence of context is a sentence not spent on the film.

  3. 03Ask the question that makes the context do work

That sentence does three things: it refuses a question that would not be about the film, it substitutes one that is, and it uses περιορίζοντας, a gerund, and το κάδρο, a technical term, to make the substitution concrete. The δεν είναι … αλλά frame is doing the same argumentative work here that it does everywhere else in this qualification.

  4. 04Answer your own question with evidence from the film

Located evidence, a connecting verb, and a claim about theme that the historical context made available but did not supply. Four sentences, of which one is about history, and the essay has stayed about the film throughout.

Exam focus

  • Location, one-clause description, technical observation, claim. That is the unit of film evidence (AO4).
  • Visual and aural detail is more reliably remembered than dialogue. Use it, and never invent a line.
  • Add τονίζει and προετοιμάζει to the connecting verbs. Προετοιμάζει makes structural arguments possible.
  • Historical context earns marks only when used to interpret a choice the film made.

Typical mistakes

  • Quoting dialogue from memory, which is the least reliable thing a viewer retains.
  • Writing about the history the film depicts instead of about the film.
  • Describing a sequence at length and never saying what it demonstrates.
  • Using the same connecting verb for every piece of evidence, which flattens six different relations into one.

Active revision

Take your twelve-sequence list and, for each entry, write the connecting sentence in Greek using a different verb from the six-plus-two list wherever possible. Then check that none of the twelve contains a quotation. If any does, replace it with what was visible or audible instead, and notice that the replacement is usually stronger.

Form and technique of presentation: what the specification actually asks for#

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Paper 2 — responses should relate to features such as the form and the technique of presentation; key themes, concepts and issues; characterisation; structure of the plot; and the social and cultural settingLPDfE GCE AS and A level subject content for modern foreign languages

Key points

The specification lists five features that a Paper 2 response should relate to, and they are worth reading as five possible essay questions rather than as a description. The form and the technique of presentation; key themes, concepts and issues; characterisation; the structure of the plot; and the social and cultural setting. A candidate who has prepared material under each of the five headings has prepared for the paper rather than for a topic, and the twelve-sequence evidence list should be tagged accordingly: each sequence should be labelled with which of the five it can serve.
Form and technique of presentation is the heading that most distinguishes a film essay, and it is broader than camera work. It includes the choice of where to begin and end; whether the story is told in order; whether the film uses voice-over, titles or intertitles; what it shows and what it keeps off screen; the balance of dialogue and silence; and the relation between what is seen and what is heard. Each of those is a decision, and a decision can be argued about, which is what makes it AO4 material.
Characterisation in film works differently from characterisation in prose and saying so is itself an argument. A novel can tell you what a character thinks; a film must show it, or find a substitute — performance, framing, what the character does when unobserved, what other characters say. So a film essay about a character is necessarily an essay about how the film makes the character knowable. Η ερμηνεία, the performance, is a term worth using precisely: η ερμηνεία της πρωταγωνίστριας δίνει στον χαρακτήρα μια εσωτερικότητα που το σενάριο δεν διατυπώνει is a claim about the relation between two components of the film, which is exactly the kind of thing the top band means by perceptive.
The social and cultural setting is the fifth heading and it connects Paper 2 to the themes without collapsing into them. The right question is always what the setting does for the film: whether it explains a character's options, whether it is treated as background or as agent, whether the film assumes the audience knows it or explains it. In Greek: το κοινωνικό πλαίσιο λειτουργεί ως εξήγηση ή ως δικαιολογία; η ταινία απευθύνεται σε θεατή που γνωρίζει την εποχή ή σε έναν που πρέπει να την μάθει; Both of those are answerable from the film alone, and both require the historical knowledge without being about it.
Worked example

Answering a question about form when you prepared for theme

You prepared themes and characters thoroughly. The question you are given is: «Πώς η μορφή της ταινίας εξυπηρετεί το περιεχόμενό της;» Show how to convert prepared material rather than panic.

  1. 01Recognise that the question is a relation, not a topic

Πώς η μορφή εξυπηρετεί το περιεχόμενο asks how form serves content, which means every paragraph must contain both. That is good news for a candidate who prepared content, because half of every paragraph is already prepared; what is needed is a formal observation attached to each thematic point rather than a new essay. Open by naming the relation you will argue for: Η μορφή της ταινίας δεν συνοδεύει το περιεχόμενο· το παράγει.

  2. 02Take your strongest thematic point and find its formal correlate

If your prepared theme is isolation, ask what the film does formally that produces it: how often the character is alone in frame, whether other people are heard but not seen, whether the editing separates or joins. Then write the pairing: Η θεματική της απομόνωσης δεν δηλώνεται ποτέ ρητά· παράγεται από το ότι ο ήρωας εμφανίζεται σχεδόν πάντοτε μόνος στο κάδρο, ακόμη και όταν ακούγονται άλλες φωνές. Prepared theme, new formal observation, one sentence.

  3. 03Do the same for structure, which you prepared as plot

Plot preparation converts directly into form, because the order of telling is a formal choice. The conversion from plot to form is a matter of asking, of everything you know about the story, when the film chose to tell it.

  4. 04Use characterisation as the third pairing

Μέσω plus genitive twice, a claim about method, and a claim about what the method asks of the viewer. Prepared character material, formal question answered.

  5. 05Close on the relation you opened with

The conclusion answers the question in its own words and goes slightly beyond it, which is the shape that satisfies the top band. Notice that nothing in this essay required material you did not have; it required asking, of each thing you knew, how the film delivered it.

Three pairings — theme with framing, plot with order of telling, character with method of revelation — each converting prepared content into a formal observation.

Exam focus

  • Five features named by the specification: form and technique, themes, characterisation, plot structure, social setting. Prepare all five (AO4).
  • Form includes what is kept off screen, the order of telling, and the relation of image to sound.
  • Characterisation in film is about how the film makes a character knowable. Say so.
  • Setting: ask what it does for the film, not what it was historically.

Typical mistakes

  • Preparing only themes and characters, and being unable to write about form when the question asks for it.
  • Treating technique as a list of devices rather than as a series of decisions.
  • Writing about a character as though the film were a novel with pictures.
  • Explaining the historical setting at length instead of saying what the film does with it.

Active revision

Tag each of your twelve sequences with which of the specification's five features it can serve; most will serve two. Then check the distribution. If fewer than three sequences are tagged for form and technique of presentation, watch the film again with that heading alone in mind, because it is the heading a film question is most likely to name and the one candidates prepare least.

●●●AdvancedLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Paper 2 Section C — a choice of two questions for the chosen film; 45 marks; approximately 270–320 wordsLPPearson Edexcel 9GK0 Paper 2 — no credit for essays on literary texts based on film versions

Key points

The Section C essay is written under the same conditions and to the same grids as Section B, and the two essays share two hours and ten minutes, so each has about sixty-five minutes. The sequence within that is the same: ninety seconds choosing between the two questions on the basis of how much evidence you have for each; eight minutes writing a plan; forty minutes writing; twelve minutes checking in three separate passes. The difference is what fills the paragraphs, and it is the technical layer: a film essay in which no paragraph contains a formal observation has thrown away a strand of the range grid and most of the distinctive AO4 material.
Two structures work reliably for a film question and it is worth deciding which you will use in the plan rather than discovering it in paragraph two. The first is thematic: three claims about what the film means, each supported by a sequence with a technical observation attached. The second is structural: follow the film's own shape, taking a sequence from the opening, one from the middle and one from the end, and argue that something develops across them. The second is riskier and better, because development across a film is exactly what the AO4 grid means by arguments that link together, and because it is impossible to fake from a summary.
The opening and the closing sentences deserve disproportionate attention because they are the two the examiner reads most carefully. Open by answering the question, not by describing the film: a sentence that begins Η ταινία [τίτλος], του [σκηνοθέτη], αφηγείται … has spent twenty-five words on information the examiner already has. Close with something that follows from the essay rather than summarising it. If your conclusion could have been written before the essay, it is an introduction in the wrong place, and the AO4 grid distinguishes convincing conclusions from restatements.
Finally, the rule that catches candidates who study both a text and a film: evidence for the literary essay must come from the literary work, and no credit is given for an essay on a literary text that argues from a film version of it. The converse is not stated, but the sensible practice mirrors it: a film essay argues from the film. If your film has a literary source, read the source if you wish, but write about what is on the screen — the adaptation's departures from its source are legitimate material only when you are discussing what the film chose to do, which is again a question about the film.
Worked example

The structural essay, planned across the running time

The question is: «Πώς παρουσιάζεται η αλλαγή στην ταινία που μελετήσατε;» Plan a structural answer.

  1. 01Choose the structural shape and say so in the position line

The position commits the essay to tracking something across the film, which is what the question is really asking. Notice μέσω plus genitive doing the structural work, and that the position already contains the essay's method as well as its claim.

  2. 02Paragraph one: the opening sequence, and the baseline

Καθιερώνει, establishes, is the verb for a baseline, and θα ανατρέψει, will overturn, is a future used prospectively inside a narrative present — a construction that itself signals to the examiner that you are tracking rather than describing.

  3. 03Paragraph two: the middle, and the first departure

Στο μέσο της ταινίας, το ίδιο [technical feature] εμφανίζεται αλλαγμένο: [describe the change in one clause]. That last claim — form changes before content does — is a genuinely analytical observation and it is only available to someone tracking a feature across the running time.

  4. 04Paragraph three: the end, and the completion

Διανύθηκε is an aorist passive of διανύω, was covered, and it is a strong verb for this kind of conclusion. A returning formal feature that measures change rather than undoing it is the most satisfying shape a structural argument can have.

  5. 05The conclusion, which the plan must contain

Written at minute eight, it tells you the essay works. If it cannot be written at minute eight, the three paragraphs are not yet an argument, and the fix belongs in the plan rather than in paragraph three.

Budget 40 / 75 / 75 / 75 / 35.

Exam focus

  • Sixty-five minutes: ninety seconds choosing, eight planning, forty writing, twelve checking in three passes (AO3).
  • Every paragraph needs a formal observation. A film essay without technique is a plot summary with opinions.
  • The structural essay — opening, middle, end — beats the thematic one, because development is what links arguments.
  • Open by answering the question; close with something that could not have been written first.

Typical mistakes

  • Spending the opening sentences summarising the film for an examiner who has seen it.
  • Writing three paragraphs that are three claims about theme with no formal observation in any of them.
  • A conclusion that restates the introduction, which caps the AO4 grid below the top bands.
  • Arguing about a literary text from its film version, which earns no credit at all.

Active revision

Write one 300-word film essay using the structural shape: one sequence from the opening, one from the middle, one from the end, and an argument that something develops across them. Then count, in your own essay, the formal observations. If there are fewer than three, the essay is about the story rather than about the film, and no amount of thematic insight will recover the marks.

Active recall

Recall the key points — then reveal.
