Geography

A-Level Geography studies the interaction of physical and human worlds at scales from the local to the global, set against the Department for Education GCE AS and A level subject content and delivered here through the AQA 7037 specification. It runs from the physical systems that shape water, carbon, coasts, glaciers, deserts, hazards and ecosystems, through the human geographies of global systems and governance, changing places, cities, population and resources, to a compulsory skills and independent-fieldwork strand. It is a diagram- and data-rich subject, assessed as much on the application of concepts to unfamiliar places, the interpretation of maps, graphs and statistics, and reasoned evaluation as on the recall of processes.

Paper 1 - Physical geography (AQA 7037/1)
2 hours 30 minutes, 120 marks, 40% of the A-Level. Assesses Section A Water and carbon cycles (compulsory), Section B one landscape option (Hot desert systems and landscapes, Coastal systems and landscapes or Glacial systems and landscapes) and Section C one of Hazards or Ecosystems under stress. Question styles range from short point-marked answers, through resource- and data-response items using maps, graphs and photographs, to extended 9- and 20-mark evaluative essays. A calculator and, where set, an Ordnance Survey map extract are allowed.
Paper 2 - Human geography (AQA 7037/2)
2 hours 30 minutes, 120 marks, 40% of the A-Level. Assesses Section A Global systems and global governance (compulsory), Section B Changing places (compulsory) and Section C one of Contemporary urban environments, Population and the environment or Resource security. The same mix of short-answer, resource-based and extended-essay questions applies, with a strong emphasis on applying concepts to case studies and to unfamiliar sources.
Component 3 - Geography fieldwork investigation / NEA (non-exam assessment)
An independent investigation of 3000-4000 words, 60 marks, 20% of the A-Level. It is based on the student's own fieldwork, must define a question or hypothesis, justify data-collection methods and sampling, present and analyse the data using appropriate cartographic, graphical and statistical techniques, and reach an evidenced conclusion with a critical evaluation. It is marked by the centre and moderated by AQA.
Assessment objectives, quantitative skills and grading
The three papers and the NEA are weighted broadly evenly across the three assessment objectives, with AO3 substantial. AO1 (knowledge and understanding of places, environments, processes and concepts) is roughly a third of the marks; AO2 (application to interpret, analyse and evaluate) roughly a third; and AO3 (use of quantitative, qualitative and fieldwork skills to investigate, analyse and conclude) roughly the remaining quarter to third. At least 10% of the overall marks assess quantitative (mathematical and statistical) skills. The full A-Level is linear and graded A*-E (U below E).
