Methods of language analysis

This topic builds the analytical toolkit used in every other part of the course: the language levels or frameworks - phonology and prosodics, graphology, lexis and semantics, grammar (morphology and syntax), pragmatics and discourse. Mastering the precise metalanguage of each level, and above all learning to move systematically from an identified feature to its effect and its meaning in context, is what separates genuine linguistic analysis from mere feature-spotting.

Key points

The foundation of A-Level English Language is a set of analytical frameworks, conventionally called the language levels. Each level examines a different layer of how a text is built: phonetics, phonology and prosodics deal with the sounds of speech; graphology and orthography with the visual and spelling systems of writing; lexis and semantics with words and their meanings; grammar - split into morphology (word structure) and syntax (sentence structure) - with how words are formed and combined; pragmatics with meaning that depends on context; and discourse with how whole texts are organised and made to hang together. The levels are not a checklist to be worked through mechanically but a set of lenses; a strong analysis chooses the levels that reveal most about a particular text.
The purpose of naming these levels is to give you a precise metalanguage - a shared technical vocabulary for talking about language. Where an everyday reader might say a text 'sounds friendly', a linguist can specify the second-person pronouns, the contractions, the informal lexis and the interrogative sentence functions that construct that friendliness, and can therefore explain HOW the effect is achieved rather than merely asserting that it exists. Accurate terminology is assessed directly under AO1, but its deeper value is that it makes analysis testable: a claim tied to a nameable feature can be checked against the text, whereas an impressionistic claim cannot.
Ferdinand de Saussure's distinction between the linguistic sign's two faces - the signifier (the form, the sound-image or written shape) and the signified (the concept) - underpins the whole enterprise, and his insistence that the relationship between them is arbitrary (there is nothing dog-like about the word 'dog') is why meaning has to be studied as a social convention rather than a natural fact. Saussure also separated langue (the shared system of a language) from parole (individual acts of speech); the language levels are essentially a way of dissecting parole to see the langue at work in it. This is the theoretical reason the same toolkit applies equally to a nursery rhyme, a legal contract, a text message and a political speech.
The single most important skill the toolkit exists to serve is the move from feature to effect to meaning. Identifying a feature (for example, a cluster of imperatives) is only the first step and earns little credit on its own; the analysis must then explain the effect the feature has (the imperatives position the reader as someone to be directed) and finally the meaning that effect creates in this particular context (in a recipe the imperatives are cooperative instruction, but in a workplace notice from a manager they enact institutional power). Every subsequent topic - representation, gender, power, change, acquisition - is ultimately an application of this same movement, which is why methods of language analysis is taught first and revisited constantly.
Worked example

From feature to effect to meaning

A supermarket sign reads: 'Grab yourself a bargain!' Show how to analyse it rather than merely label its features.

  1. 01Identify features (AO1)

    Imperative verb 'Grab'; reflexive pronoun 'yourself'; informal, physical lexis 'grab'; positively connoted noun 'bargain'; exclamative punctuation.

  2. 02State the effect (AO3)

    The imperative directs the reader to act; 'yourself' makes the offer feel personal and individually addressed; the colloquial 'grab' creates an energetic, casual tone; the exclamation adds urgency and enthusiasm.

  3. 03Explain the meaning in context

    Together these construct a friendly but persuasive relationship in which the shopper is positioned as an active bargain-hunter being encouraged, not commanded - Fairclough's synthetic personalisation, addressing a mass audience as if each were an individual.

  4. 04Integrate the levels

    Lexis (informal), grammar (imperative mood), pragmatics (the reader-relationship) and graphology (the exclamation mark) all pull in the same direction, which is what makes the persuasion coherent.

Result: The analysis names features precisely, then explains their persuasive effect and their meaning as a constructed reader-relationship - the feature-effect-meaning movement that all A-Level analysis requires.

  • Learn the metalanguage of each level so that you can name features precisely and accurately - AO1 credits correct terminology and penalises vague or misused terms.
  • Practise the feature-effect-meaning chain until it is automatic: never leave an identified feature without explaining what it does and what it means in context (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Feature-spotting: listing or labelling features ('there is a metaphor', 'this is a declarative') without analysing their effect or meaning - this is the single most common weakness and caps marks in the lower bands.
  • Treating the levels as a rigid checklist and forcing comment on every level, rather than selecting the levels that genuinely reveal most about the specific text.

Key points

Phonetics studies the physical sounds of speech and phonology studies the sound SYSTEM of a language - the phonemes, the smallest units of sound that distinguish meaning (the difference between /p/ and /b/ is what separates 'pin' from 'bin'). English has around 44 phonemes, which the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) represents with one symbol per sound, avoiding the notorious unreliability of English spelling. Consonants are classified by place and manner of articulation (plosives such as /p, b, t, d, k, g/; fricatives such as /f, v, s, z/; the sibilants /s, z, ʃ/; nasals /m, n, ŋ/; the liquids /l, r/); vowels by tongue height and position and by whether they are pure or diphthongs. You are not usually required to transcribe, but you must be able to name phonological features and analyse their effect.
In connected speech, sounds change: elision drops sounds ('going to' becomes 'gonna'), assimilation makes one sound more like a neighbour ('handbag' pronounced 'hambag'), and liaison links words. Sound patterning is a major resource for effect: alliteration and consonance repeat consonants, assonance repeats vowels, sibilance foregrounds /s/ sounds, plosives can sound abrupt or harsh, and onomatopoeia imitates a sound. In analysis the point is never simply to spot alliteration but to explain what the patterning does - binding a brand name together for memorability, mimicking an action, or creating a soft or harsh texture appropriate to the subject.
Prosodics covers the 'music' of speech - the features that operate above the level of individual sounds: stress (which syllables or words are emphasised), intonation (the rise and fall of pitch), pitch, rhythm, tempo or pace, volume and pause. Prosody carries huge amounts of meaning that the words alone do not: rising intonation can turn a statement into a question or signal uncertainty; contrastive stress changes meaning ('I didn't say she stole it'); a pause can imply hesitation, emphasis or a turn-yielding signal. In transcripts of speech, prosodic features are often the key to tone, attitude and interactional meaning, so they matter especially in the analysis of spoken data.
Graphology is the visual dimension of a written or multimodal text - typeface, font size, colour, layout, spacing, images, logos, bullet points and the relationship between verbal and visual elements - while orthography is the spelling system and its conventions, including non-standard spelling used for effect (the deliberate 'lite', 'nite' or 'thru' of advertising and text language). Because so many modern texts are multimodal, graphological analysis is central: a pull-quote, a colour scheme, the choice of a serif or sans-serif font, or the positioning of an image all make meaning alongside the words. As always, the analysis must connect the graphological choice to purpose, audience and effect, not merely describe the appearance.
Worked example

Analysing sound in a slogan

A crisp brand uses the slogan 'Crisp, crunchy, moreish'. Analyse the phonological and lexical choices.

  1. 01Identify sound features

    The plosives /k/ and the cluster in 'crisp' and 'crunchy' foreground hard, sharp consonant sounds; there is consonance on the /k/ and near-rhyme across the two adjectives.

  2. 02Explain the phonological effect

    The clustered plosives are effortful to articulate and evoke the crunching action of eating the product - the sound iconically imitates the sensation (sound symbolism).

  3. 03Add the lexical and grammatical layer

    The pre-modifying adjectives are sensory and evaluative; 'moreish' is an informal, positively connoted coinage implying you cannot stop - appealing directly to appetite.

  4. 04State the meaning in context

    The sound and lexis together sell the eating experience rather than the product's ingredients, which suits an advert whose purpose is to make the reader crave the sensation.

Result: The clustered plosives enact the crunch they describe, and the sensory, informal lexis appeals to appetite - a coherent phonological-and-lexical strategy tied precisely to the advert's persuasive purpose.

Exam focus

  • Be able to name phonological and prosodic features accurately (plosive, fricative, sibilance, elision, intonation, stress, pause) and, crucially, analyse their effect in the given text or transcript.
  • Treat graphology and orthography as meaning-making systems: link layout, typeface, image and non-standard spelling to audience, purpose and mode, especially in multimodal texts.

Typical mistakes

  • Misusing sound terminology - calling any repeated letter 'alliteration' regardless of sound, or confusing the letter with the phoneme (the 'c' in 'city' is the phoneme /s/, not /k/).
  • Describing graphology ('the font is big and red') without analysing why the choice suits the purpose and audience - description is not analysis.

Key points

Lexis means the vocabulary of a text, and the first analytical move is usually to classify words by their word class or part of speech. The open classes - nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs - carry most of the content and readily admit new members; the closed classes - determiners, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliary verbs - are the grammatical 'glue' and rarely gain new members. Within these, useful sub-distinctions abound: concrete versus abstract nouns, proper versus common nouns, dynamic versus stative verbs, and the modal auxiliaries (can, must, should, will) that express possibility, obligation and certainty and are therefore central to analysing power, persuasion and stance.
Semantics is the study of meaning at word and sentence level. Denotation is a word's literal, dictionary meaning; connotation is the web of associations it carries ('home' and 'residence' denote the same thing but connote very differently). Words cluster into semantic fields (a text about sport draws on a recognisable lexical set), and meaning relations structure the vocabulary: synonymy (near-sameness), antonymy (oppositeness), hyponymy (a 'rose' is a hyponym of the superordinate 'flower') and polysemy (one word, several related senses). Figurative meaning - metaphor, simile, metonymy, personification, idiom - transfers meaning from one domain to another and is a primary resource for representation, since choosing to describe immigration as a 'flood' or a 'boost' frames it evaluatively.
Register-marking lexis is especially important for the context topics. Formality is signalled lexically: Latinate and polysyllabic vocabulary tends to be more formal, Anglo-Saxon and monosyllabic more informal. Jargon is the specialist lexis of a field or occupation; colloquialism and slang mark informality and group membership; taboo language breaks social norms; and euphemism softens the unpalatable ('let go' for 'sacked', 'passed away' for 'died'). Neologisms (new coinages) and archaisms (dated words) locate a text in time. Naming choices - how people, groups and things are labelled - are among the most powerful representational tools, which is why the same person can be a 'freedom fighter' or a 'terrorist'.
Morphology is the study of word structure - how words are built from morphemes, the smallest units of meaning. A free morpheme can stand alone ('cat', 'happy'); a bound morpheme cannot and must attach to a base. Bound morphemes divide into inflectional morphemes, which mark grammatical categories without changing word class (the plural '-s', past tense '-ed', comparative '-er'), and derivational morphemes, which typically create a new word, often of a different class ('happy' becomes 'unhappiness' through the prefix 'un-' and suffixes '-ness'). Morphological analysis matters because it explains word formation (crucial for language change), children's virtuous errors ('goed', 'sheeps' show the productive application of inflectional rules), and the precise construction of complex or coined vocabulary.

Analysing morphemes in a coinage

Break down the word 'unfriendliness' into morphemes and classify each, then comment on what the analysis shows.

  1. 01Find the base

    The free morpheme (base) is 'friend', a noun that can stand alone.

  2. 02Identify the derivational morphemes

    The suffix '-ly' derives the adjective 'friendly' from 'friend'; the prefix 'un-' derives the antonym 'unfriendly'; the suffix '-ness' derives the abstract noun 'unfriendliness'. Each is derivational because it changes meaning and/or word class.

  3. 03Note the class changes

    The word moves noun -> adjective -> adjective -> abstract noun, showing how derivation reshapes both meaning and grammatical function.

    The analysis demonstrates the productivity of English morphology: a single base generates a family of words, which is the mechanism behind much lexical creativity and change.

Key points

Syntax is the study of how words combine into larger units - phrases, clauses and sentences. The key idea is constituency: words group into phrases built around a head word (a noun phrase around a noun, a verb phrase around a verb, and so on), and phrases combine into clauses. A clause minimally contains a verb and typically has a subject; the standard clause elements are Subject, Verb, Object, Complement and Adverbial (SVOCA), and analysing which elements are present, and in what order, reveals a great deal about a text's style. A noun phrase can be a single word ('children') or heavily expanded with pre-modifiers and post-modifiers ('the three small children in the corner'), and the density of modification is itself a stylistic and representational choice.
Sentences are classified in two independent ways that students frequently confuse. By FUNCTION, a sentence is declarative (making a statement), interrogative (asking a question), imperative (giving a command) or exclamative (exclaiming); function is central to analysing interaction and power, since who issues imperatives and interrogatives often maps onto who holds authority. By STRUCTURE, a sentence is simple (one main clause), compound (two or more main clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions - and, but, or), complex (a main clause plus one or more subordinate clauses) or compound-complex. Structural choice affects tone and accessibility: a run of simple sentences can be punchy or child-like, while dense subordination signals formality, qualification and an educated register.
Two further grammatical systems carry heavy analytical weight. Voice can be active (the agent is the grammatical subject: 'The company polluted the river') or passive (the affected entity is fronted and the agent can be deleted: 'The river was polluted'). The agentless passive is a powerful representational device because it conceals responsibility, which is why it recurs in official and evasive language. Mood and modality express the speaker's stance - the modal auxiliaries (must, should, might, will) grade obligation, certainty and possibility - and are therefore essential for analysing persuasion, politeness and power.
A tree diagram (a constituent-structure or phrase-structure tree) makes the hierarchy visible: the sentence node branches into its immediate constituents, each of which branches again, down to the individual words at the leaves. Being able to read and build a simple tree is genuinely useful because it forces you to see that a sentence is not a flat string of words but a nested structure - the subject noun phrase and the predicate verb phrase are the two great branches, and ambiguity (as in 'old men and women') can often be explained as two different possible trees for the same string. You are not expected to produce elaborate formal trees under exam conditions, but the constituency thinking they embody underlies all accurate syntactic analysis.
Worked example

Building a constituent tree

Analyse the constituent structure of 'The small child dropped the ball' and explain what the tree shows.

  1. 01Find the two main branches

    Every clause divides into a subject and a predicate. The subject noun phrase is 'The small child'; the predicate verb phrase is 'dropped the ball'.

  2. 02Break down the subject NP

    'The small child' is a noun phrase headed by the noun 'child', with the determiner 'The' and the pre-modifying adjective 'small'.

  3. 03Break down the VP

    'dropped the ball' is a verb phrase headed by the verb 'dropped', taking the object noun phrase 'the ball' (determiner 'the' plus noun 'ball').

  4. 04Read the hierarchy

    The tree shows that 'the ball' is a single constituent nested inside the VP, not a loose pair of words - which is why you can replace it with a pronoun ('dropped it') but cannot break it up.

Result: The sentence is S -> NP[Det+Adj+N] + VP[V + NP[Det+N]]: a nested hierarchy in which the object noun phrase is a constituent of the verb phrase, demonstrating that syntax is structured, not a flat sequence of words.

Exam focus

  • Distinguish sentence FUNCTION (declarative/interrogative/imperative/exclamative) from sentence STRUCTURE (simple/compound/complex) and use both precisely - conflating them is a frequent error.
  • Analyse voice and modality for their representational and interpersonal effects: the agentless passive hides responsibility; modal verbs grade authority and certainty (AO3).

Typical mistakes

  • Confusing structure with function - calling a complex sentence a 'declarative sentence' as if the two labels answered the same question. Every sentence has both a function and a structure.
  • Labelling a sentence 'complex' merely because it is long; length is not subordination. A complex sentence must contain a subordinate clause.

Key points

Pragmatics is the study of meaning that depends on context rather than on the words alone - what a speaker means as opposed to what the sentence literally says. When one person says 'It's cold in here' and another gets up to shut the window, no literal request was made, yet a request was understood; explaining that gap between the said and the meant is the work of pragmatics. Because so much of real communication is implied rather than stated, pragmatics is indispensable for analysing conversation, persuasion, politeness and power, and it is the level at which the context topics (mode, power, gender, occupation) most obviously bite.
H. P. Grice's cooperative principle proposes that participants in conversation generally assume each other to be cooperating, and he analysed this into four maxims: quantity (give the right amount of information), quality (be truthful), relation or relevance (be relevant) and manner (be clear and orderly). Crucially, speakers often FLOUT a maxim deliberately and obviously, and the hearer, still assuming cooperation, infers an implicature - an unstated meaning. Sarcasm flouts quality; a tactful understatement flouts quantity; a pointedly irrelevant answer flouts relation to avoid a topic. Analysing implicature explains how texts and speakers mean far more than they say, and why humour, evasion and politeness so often work indirectly.
Speech act theory, from J. L. Austin and developed by John Searle, holds that utterances do things as well as say them. Austin distinguished the locution (the words uttered), the illocution (the intended act - promising, warning, ordering, apologising) and the perlocution (the actual effect on the hearer). Performatives such as 'I apologise' or 'I now pronounce you...' perform the very act they name. Speech acts can be direct (an imperative used to command) or indirect ('Could you possibly...' as a polite request dressed as a question), and the choice between them is a central politeness and power strategy.
Politeness theory, developed by Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson, builds on Erving Goffman's notion of face - the public self-image every person claims. Positive face is the desire to be liked and approved of; negative face is the desire not to be imposed upon. Many acts are face-threatening (a request threatens negative face; a criticism threatens positive face), and speakers use politeness strategies to mitigate them - positive politeness (compliments, in-group markers, solidarity) or negative politeness (hedging, apologising, indirectness, giving the hearer an 'out'). Related concepts include deixis (words such as 'here', 'now', 'you' and 'that' whose reference depends on the context of utterance) and presupposition (meaning taken for granted, as when 'Have you stopped wasting money?' presupposes that you were). Together these tools let you analyse the interpersonal dynamics of any interaction with precision.
Worked example

Analysing an implicature

A manager asks an employee 'Is that report finished?' and the employee replies 'I've had three other deadlines today.' Analyse the pragmatics.

  1. 01Note the literal content

    Semantically, the reply states a fact about the employee's workload; it does not literally answer the yes/no question.

  2. 02Identify the flouted maxim

    The reply flouts the maxim of relation (relevance) and of quantity - it does not directly say whether the report is done.

  3. 03Derive the implicature

    Because the manager assumes cooperation, they infer the implicature: 'No, it is not finished, and here is a mitigating reason.' The indirectness protects the employee's positive face and softens the face-threatening admission of failure.

  4. 04Link to context and power

    The indirect strategy manages the power asymmetry: a bald 'No' would be more face-threatening for a subordinate, so the implicature lets the employee decline to comply while offering an account.

Result: By flouting relevance, the employee implicates a mitigated 'no' - an indirect, face-saving response that manages the power relationship, a meaning invisible at the semantic level but recoverable through pragmatics.

Exam focus

  • Use Grice's maxims to analyse implicature: identify which maxim is flouted and what the hearer is meant to infer - this is far more analytical than simply labelling a text 'informal'.

Key points

Discourse is the level of whole-text organisation - how a text is structured and made to hang together beyond the single sentence. Cohesion is the network of surface links that ties a text: reference (pronouns and determiners pointing back or forward - anaphora and cataphora), substitution and ellipsis (avoiding repetition by replacing or omitting), conjunction (connectives such as 'however', 'therefore', 'meanwhile' that signal logical relations) and lexical cohesion (repetition, synonymy and words from the same semantic field weaving through the text). Coherence is the deeper sense that a text makes overall sense - that its parts belong together and follow an understandable logic - and depends on the reader's knowledge and schemas as much as on the words. A text can be cohesive but incoherent, or coherent with few explicit cohesive ties, so the two must be distinguished.
Spoken discourse has its own structural conventions, studied by conversation analysis (Harvey Sacks, Emanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson). Turn-taking is orderly: speakers take turns at transition-relevance places, and adjacency pairs (question-answer, greeting-greeting, offer-acceptance) create expectations, so that a first pair-part makes a particular second pair-part 'conditionally relevant' and its absence is noticeable. Other features include openings and closings, topic management, feedback or back-channelling ('mm', 'yeah'), repairs (corrections of trouble in talk) and overlaps and interruptions. These tools are essential for analysing the child-language, occupation, gender and power topics, all of which draw on spoken data.
The point of naming all these levels is finally to INTEGRATE them. A mature analysis does not march through phonology, then lexis, then grammar as separate paragraphs; it selects the most telling features from whichever levels reveal most, and shows how they work together to construct meaning. The organising discipline is still feature to effect to meaning, but now the features are drawn from several levels at once and the analysis explains how they converge. Where the levels pull together - informal lexis, contracted grammar, second-person address and colloquial discourse structure all constructing intimacy, say - that convergence is itself the finding.
Selecting and prioritising is what distinguishes top-band analysis. Given a text, the skilled analyst asks which levels this particular text foregrounds: an advertisement may reward graphology and phonology; a legal document, syntax and modality; a transcript of children, phonology and morphology; a persuasive column, pragmatics and lexis. Trying to comment equally on every level produces thin, listing analysis; choosing the two or three levels that carry the text's meaning, and analysing them in depth with named terminology and a clear feature-effect-meaning chain, produces the integrated commentary the mark schemes reward. This selective, integrated method is the single most transferable skill in the whole A-Level.
Worked example

A worked integrated mini-analysis

Analyse this text message from a parent to a teenage child: 'dinner's ready babe come down NOW x'. Integrate the levels.

  1. 01Select the revealing levels

    Graphology/orthography, grammar (sentence function) and pragmatics/discourse carry most of this text's meaning; phonology is not relevant.

  2. 02Graphology and lexis

    The absent capitalisation and the affectionate 'babe' and kiss 'x' are informal, intimate markers typical of the text-message mode; the capitalised 'NOW' graphologically shouts the urgency.

  3. 03Grammar and pragmatics

    The elliptical opening ('dinner's ready') and the imperative 'come down' are direct; the imperative would be a strong face-threatening act, but the endearment and kiss mitigate it - positive politeness softening a command.

  4. 04Integrate to a judgement

    The features converge: intimacy (endearment, kiss, informal orthography) and authority (imperative, capitalised NOW) coexist because the parent-child relationship is both affectionate and hierarchical, and the blended mode of texting lets both be signalled at once.

Result: The text fuses intimacy and mild command: informal graphology and endearments enact closeness while the imperative and capitalised 'NOW' enact parental authority, softened by positive politeness - a meaning that only an integrated, multi-level reading reveals.

Exam focus

  • Analyse cohesion and coherence explicitly (reference, ellipsis, conjunction, lexical cohesion) and, for spoken data, the structures of conversation (turn-taking, adjacency pairs, repair).
  • Integrate the levels rather than working through them mechanically - select the two or three most revealing levels and show how their features converge to make meaning (the key to the top bands).

Typical mistakes

  • Writing a level-by-level 'checklist' commentary in which each paragraph covers one level in isolation, instead of integrating the most telling features across levels.
  • Confusing cohesion (surface links) with coherence (overall sense) and using the terms interchangeably.
