Language investigation

The Language Investigation is the research half of the non-exam assessment (Language in Action): an independent, data-led study of a self-chosen language topic of around 2000 words. Students design a research question, collect and transcribe original data ethically, apply the language levels systematically as a methodology, and interpret their findings against linguistic concepts, writing up an academic report that reaches an evaluative conclusion.

Key points

The Language Investigation is a genuinely independent, data-led study, and its success is largely determined at the planning stage by the choice of a good topic and, above all, a sharply focused research question. The investigation may draw on any area of the course - language and gender, occupation, power, technology, region, change over time, representation, or child language - and the best topics are those where the student can readily collect suitable original data and apply the language levels productively. A topic that is too broad ('language and social media') cannot be investigated in around 2000 words; a topic narrowed to a specific, answerable question can.
The research question (or hypothesis) is the spine of the whole project and must be focused, answerable and linguistic. A vague aim ('to look at how men and women talk') produces an unfocused investigation; a precise question ('How do the interruption patterns of male and female speakers differ in a mixed-sex podcast discussion?') defines the data needed, the features to analyse and the concepts to apply. A good question is narrow enough to answer with a manageable data set, connected to a named linguistic concept or debate (so that findings can be interpreted against theory), and genuinely open (a question whose answer is already obvious is not worth investigating).
Framing the question well means anticipating the whole investigation. The student should be able to see, from the question, what DATA it requires (whose speech or writing, how much, from where), what FEATURES will be analysed (interruptions, modal verbs, lexical fields, phonological features), and what CONCEPTS or theories it engages (the dominance model, Fairclough on power, the theories of change). A question that cannot be tied to collectable data or to linguistic frameworks needs reframing. It is also wise to choose a topic of genuine interest and manageable scope, since the investigation is a sustained piece of independent work.
Planning the investigation therefore begins with selecting an area, narrowing it to a focused research question tied to data and theory, and checking feasibility (can the data be collected ethically and in time?). The commonest planning errors are choosing too broad a topic, framing a question that cannot be answered with available data, or picking a question with no link to linguistic concepts (so that the analysis becomes mere description). A well-chosen, well-framed question makes every later stage - data collection, methodology, analysis, evaluation - clear and achievable, which is why disciplined planning is the foundation of a strong NEA.
Worked example

Sharpening a research question

Turn the vague aim 'I want to investigate language and power' into a focused, investigable research question.

  1. 01Narrow the field

    Choose a specific context where power is enacted in language - say, a broadcast interview between a presenter and a politician.

  2. 02Specify the feature

    Pick concrete features to analyse: control of the agenda, interruptions, and interrogative versus declarative moves - observable markers of power in discourse.

Key points

The investigation is data-led, so the quality of the data determines the quality of the analysis. Data may be primary (collected by the student - recording and transcribing conversations, gathering texts, eliciting child language) or secondary (drawn from existing sources - archives, corpora, published texts, historical documents for a change study). The data set must be appropriate to the research question, large enough to yield findings but small enough to analyse in depth (a focused investigation analyses a modest amount of data thoroughly rather than a large amount superficially), and representative enough to support the claims made.
Spoken data must be transcribed, and transcription is itself a methodological choice. A basic orthographic transcript captures the words; a more detailed transcript uses conventions (from conversation analysis) to mark pauses (timed or marked), overlaps, stress, intonation, elongation and non-fluency features, because for many spoken investigations these prosodic and interactional features ARE the data. The level of transcription detail should match the research question - an investigation into interruption needs overlaps marked; one into lexical choice may not - and the transcription key should be stated so the reader can interpret the symbols.
Research ethics are compulsory and assessed, not optional. Anyone recorded must give informed consent (knowing they are being recorded and how the data will be used), participants and third parties must be anonymised (names and identifying details changed), and special care is required with vulnerable participants, especially children (consent from parents or guardians, safeguarding). Sensitive or private material must be handled responsibly. Ethical practice is both a moral requirement and a mark of methodological rigour, and the write-up should show that ethical procedures were followed.
A further methodological issue is the observer's paradox, named by William Labov: the very act of observing and recording speech can change it, because people speak differently when they know they are being recorded, so the 'natural' speech the investigator wants is distorted by the act of collecting it. Investigators mitigate this (for example by recording longer sessions so participants relax, or using naturally occurring public data) and, crucially, ACKNOWLEDGE it as a limitation. Collecting data well therefore means choosing appropriate primary or secondary data, transcribing at a level matched to the question with a stated key, following ethical procedures, and reflecting critically on the observer's paradox and representativeness - the methodological awareness that AO3 and the evaluation reward.
Worked example

Planning ethical data collection

You want to investigate a two-year-old's use of language during play. Plan the data collection and transcription.

  1. 01Obtain consent

    As the participant is a child, obtain informed consent from the parent/guardian, explaining the purpose and use of the recording, and follow safeguarding - a compulsory ethical step.

  2. 02Collect appropriate data

    Record a modest, focused sample (for example 15-20 minutes of naturalistic play with a familiar caregiver) - enough to yield features, small enough to transcribe and analyse in depth.

  3. 03Choose transcription detail

    Use a transcription key marking pauses, the child's actual pronunciations (for phonological analysis), overlaps and caregiver turns - the level of detail the CLA focus requires - and anonymise the child's name.

  4. 04Address the observer's paradox

    Record during ordinary play with a familiar adult in a familiar setting so the child behaves naturally, and acknowledge in the write-up that recording may still affect behaviour.

Result: The plan obtains parental consent and follows safeguarding, collects a focused naturalistic sample, transcribes at a phonologically detailed level with anonymisation and a stated key, and mitigates and acknowledges the observer's paradox - ethically sound, methodologically matched data collection.

Key points

The heart of the investigation is the systematic application of a linguistic methodology to the data - the language levels used rigorously and selectively as analytical tools. The student decides which levels the research question makes relevant (an investigation into power might foreground pragmatics, modality and turn-taking; one into representation might foreground lexis and transitivity; one into child language might foreground phonology and morphology) and analyses the data through those frameworks. As always, analysis must drive from feature to effect to meaning, and be tied back to the research question at every stage.
Good methodology usually combines quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative analysis counts features - the number of interruptions by each speaker, the frequency of modal verbs, the proportion of standard to non-standard forms - and can reveal patterns and be presented in tables or charts, but numbers alone do not explain anything. Qualitative analysis interprets the features in context - why a particular interruption is dominant rather than supportive, what a modal verb achieves in its specific utterance - and is where meaning is made. The strongest investigations use quantitative findings to identify patterns and qualitative analysis to interpret them, integrating the two rather than relying on either alone.
Named concepts and theories provide the interpretive framework that lifts analysis above description. The investigation should engage the relevant linguistic ideas - applying the dominance model to interruption data, Fairclough to power data, the theories of acquisition to child data, semantic-change processes to historical data - using them as lenses to interpret the findings and testing the data against them. This is where AO2 (critical understanding of concepts) is demonstrated: the data is not just described but read through, and used to evaluate, established frameworks.
Applying a methodology therefore means selecting the relevant language levels, analysing the data systematically through them (feature to effect to meaning), combining quantitative pattern-finding with qualitative interpretation, and framing the analysis with named concepts and theories. The commonest weakness is description without analysis - counting or listing features without interpreting them or relating them to concepts - and the second is applying frameworks mechanically without genuinely testing the data against them. A rigorous, theory-informed, mixed-method analysis, kept always in service of the research question, is what makes an investigation genuinely linguistic rather than merely observational.
Worked example

Integrating quantitative and qualitative analysis

In an interruption study you count that Speaker A interrupts 12 times and Speaker B twice. Show how to analyse this properly.

  1. 01Present the quantitative pattern

    State the counts clearly (A: 12 interruptions; B: 2) - this establishes a pattern but does not yet explain anything.

  2. 02Interpret qualitatively

    Examine the interruptions in context: are A's interruptions dominant (seizing the floor, changing topic) or supportive (collaborative overlaps, agreement)? The meaning depends on function, not just frequency.

  3. 03Frame with theory

    Relate to the dominance model (Zimmerman & West) if the interruptions are floor-seizing, but note the critique (Beattie) that not all interruptions are dominant - testing the data against the theory rather than assuming it.

  4. 04Answer the question

    Conclude what the combined evidence shows about power in the interaction, acknowledging that the raw count alone would have been misleading without the qualitative reading.

Result: The count (12 vs 2) identifies a pattern, but the analysis is completed by qualitatively examining whether A's interruptions are dominant or supportive and testing this against the dominance model and its critique - integrated mixed-method analysis that interprets rather than merely counts.

Key points

The analysis must build towards findings that answer the research question, and interpreting those findings against theory is where the investigation demonstrates real linguistic understanding. This means not just reporting what was found but explaining what it MEANS - relating the patterns to the concepts and debates the investigation engaged, and using the findings to support, qualify or challenge established frameworks. A genuine finding might confirm a theory (the data fits the dominance model), complicate it (the interruptions were mostly supportive, so the dominance reading is too simple), or add a nuance the theory did not anticipate. Treating the data as a test of ideas, not just an illustration of them, is the hallmark of a strong investigation.
Evaluation of the STUDY itself is a distinct and heavily rewarded component. A rigorous investigator reflects critically on the limitations of their own method: was the data set large and representative enough to support the claims, or are the findings suggestive rather than conclusive? Did the observer's paradox affect the data? Were there confounding variables (was an apparent gender difference actually a difference of status or role)? Was the transcription or the coding of features reliable and consistent? Acknowledging these limitations honestly does not weaken the investigation - it strengthens it, demonstrating the methodological awareness that distinguishes real research from naive assertion.
Honesty about the scope of the conclusions is essential. A small-scale student investigation cannot prove a general claim about 'men and women' or 'young people'; it can show what happened in ITS data and suggest what might be worth investigating further. The strongest conclusions are appropriately modest and precise - stating what the specific data showed, relating it to theory, acknowledging the limits, and perhaps suggesting how the investigation could be extended or improved. Overclaiming (treating a tiny sample as proof of a universal generalisation) is a serious weakness; calibrated, evidence-proportioned claims are a strength.
Analysing and evaluating therefore means interpreting findings against theory (using the data to test ideas), evaluating the method's limitations candidly (representativeness, the observer's paradox, confounds, reliability), and drawing appropriately modest, precise conclusions. The commonest weaknesses are overclaiming from limited data, failing to interpret findings against concepts (leaving analysis as description), and omitting the self-evaluation of the method. Your small study of one mixed-sex conversation found more male interruptions. Write a properly calibrated conclusion.

  1. 01State what the data showed

    Report precisely: 'In this single conversation, the male speaker interrupted more frequently, and most of these interruptions were floor-seizing rather than supportive.'

  2. 02Relate to theory

    'This is consistent with the dominance model (Zimmerman & West), in which interruption enacts conversational dominance.'

  3. 03Acknowledge limitations

    'However, the data set is a single conversation between two individuals, so it cannot support any general claim about men and women; the pattern may reflect these individuals, their roles, or the observer's paradox rather than gender.'

Result: The conclusion states the specific finding, relates it to the dominance model, candidly notes that one conversation cannot support a general claim (confounds, the observer's paradox), and calibrates the claim accordingly - the evidence-proportioned, self-aware evaluation the NEA rewards over overclaiming.

The investigation is written up as an academic report, and its structure follows the conventions of research writing. A typical report has an introduction (setting out the topic, the research question or hypothesis, and the relevant concepts and background), a methodology section (explaining how the data was selected and collected, the ethical procedures followed, and the analytical approach), an analysis section (the systematic, theory-informed analysis of the data, the core of the report), a conclusion (the findings, related to the research question and theory), an evaluation (a critical assessment of the method and its limitations), and a bibliography/references plus appendices (the data and transcripts). This structure signals rigour and guides the reader through the research.
The report is written in a formal academic register - the same controlled, precise, measured writing required in the examined essays - and uses accurate metalanguage throughout. It should be coherent and well-signposted, with each section doing its distinct job and the whole building a clear line from question to conclusion. Data should be presented clearly (tables or charts for quantitative findings, well-formatted transcript extracts for qualitative analysis), and every claim should be supported by specific evidence from the data. Referencing must be accurate: the concepts, theories and studies drawn on should be properly cited, and any secondary sources acknowledged.
The report must integrate everything the investigation has done. The introduction's concepts must be the ones the analysis applies; the methodology must match the analysis actually carried out; the conclusion must answer the question the introduction posed; and the evaluation must reflect honestly on the method the report described. This internal consistency is what makes a report read as a genuine, coherent piece of research rather than a set of disconnected parts. The word count (around 2000 words) enforces discipline: everything must earn its place, which rewards a focused question and a well-chosen data set from the outset.
Writing the report well therefore means following the academic structure, sustaining a formal register with accurate metalanguage, presenting data clearly and citing sources properly, and keeping the whole internally consistent from question to evaluation. The commonest weaknesses are a disorganised structure that omits the methodology or evaluation, an over-long descriptive analysis that crowds out interpretation and evaluation, and inconsistency between the parts. A well-structured, coherent, properly referenced report is the visible product of a disciplined investigation, and it brings together the analytical, evaluative and writing skills the whole course has developed - the culmination of independent linguistic study.

A draft report's introduction promises to apply the dominance model, but its analysis only counts interruptions and its conclusion claims to have 'proved men dominate conversation'. Identify the problems.
