This topic carries Paper 2 Section C, the written response to a prescribed film: an extended essay in Arabic worth 45 marks, chosen from two questions on the film, marked by the same three grids as the literary essay — critical and analytical response (AO4) out of 20, range of grammatical structures and vocabulary (AO3) out of 15, and accuracy of language (AO3) out of 10 — at a guide length of approximately 270 to 320 words. Section C is entered only by students who answered on one literary text in Section B; answering on two films is not permitted. The film essay has one characteristic failure that the literary essay does not share as sharply, which is retelling the story, and the remedy is a working vocabulary of film technique that lets a candidate write about how a film says something rather than about what happens in it. The notes therefore build that vocabulary in Arabic, teach evidence as the described shot, and name the three prescribed films accurately without supplying plot detail or inventing a line of dialogue.

basic level
At first-year standard the expectation is an organised response that answers the question and refers accurately to what happens in the film, with some awareness that the film is made rather than merely watched, written in correct if straightforward Arabic.
higher level
The full A-Level expects the film to be treated as a constructed object: claims about framing, editing, sound and point of view, supported by described shots, set against a counter-reading, and written in Arabic with enough structural range to satisfy a 15-mark grid alongside a 10-mark accuracy grid.

Section C offers two questions on your film. One asks ناقش أهمية المكان في الفيلم and the other asks إلى أي مدى يقدم الفيلم شخصيته الرئيسية بتعاطف؟ You know the film well. Decide which to answer, and plan it.
The first question, on the importance of place, is answerable by description: a candidate can list locations and say they matter, and such an essay will be accurate and middling. The second is a comparison of degree — إلى أي مدى — about a technique, sympathy, which a film produces by identifiable means. It is harder to start and much harder to answer badly, because you cannot answer it at all without talking about how the film is made. Choose the second.
Sympathy in film is produced by a short list of things: whose point of view the camera adopts, how close it stays, whose knowledge the audience shares, who is given silence and who is interrupted, and what the score does and does not do. Listing those in your plan gives you a checklist of evidence to search your memory of the film for, and it guarantees that the essay is about technique rather than about whether you liked the character.
يقدم الفيلم شخصيته الرئيسية بتعاطف واضح في نصفه الأول، غير أن هذا التعاطف يضعف عمدا في المشاهد الأخيرة. The claim now has a shape, a degree and a place, and غير أن sets up the second half of the essay. عمدا, deliberately, is an adverbial accusative and it makes the claim analytical: not that the sympathy fades but that the film withdraws it, which is a claim about the maker's method and can be evidenced.
For the first half, a shot in which the camera stays with the character after the other people leave the frame — the audience is left where she is, which is alignment. For the second, a shot in which the camera watches her from a distance it had not previously used, or a cut away at the moment she would have been closest. Two shots, each named by what the camera does. Neither requires a quotation and neither requires you to retell anything.
قد يرى مشاهد آخر أن التعاطف لا يضعف بل يتحول إلى احترام, another viewer might hold that the sympathy does not weaken but turns into respect. That is a genuine alternative reading of the same evidence, which is the strongest kind, and acknowledging it before your conclusion is what the AO4 grid means by evaluating. Plan a one-line answer to it rather than a paragraph; you have about 300 words in total.
Five paragraphs at about 60 words: claim, shot one, shot two, counter-reading, conclusion. Place the structures at planning time — a passive and a verbal noun in the technical paragraphs, a relative clause after an indefinite antecedent, a concessive for the counter-reading, and a comparative in the conclusion. Then, of the sixty-five minutes, six on this plan, forty-five writing, and the rest on the three accuracy sweeps.
Result: Answer the second question. يقدم الفيلم شخصيته الرئيسية بتعاطف واضح في نصفه الأول، غير أن هذا التعاطف يضعف عمدا في المشاهد الأخيرة — a claim with a degree, a location and an implied method, supported by two shots described by what the camera does, set against the alternative reading that the sympathy turns into respect, in five paragraphs of about sixty words each.

Film vocabulary and the claim each term licenses
Describing what a camera does requires a specific set of verbs, prepositions and tenses that a general Arabic course never teaches. Build the sentences, and note the grammar each one needs.
Arabic describes what happens in a work in the present, exactly as English does: تتوقف الكاميرا, يقطع المخرج, تبقى الشخصية. The perfect would place the events in a past that the film does not have, and mixing the two — a habit that comes from thinking of the film as something you watched rather than as something that exists — is one of the commonest tense errors in this paper. Decide the present at the start and hold it.
تتوقف الكاميرا على وجه الشخصية, the camera rests on the character's face — توقف على. تتبع الكاميرا الشخصية, the camera follows her — تتبع takes a direct object. تبتعد الكاميرا عن, moves away from — with عن. يقطع المخرج إلى, the director cuts to — with إلى. تظل اللقطة ثابتة, the shot stays fixed — ظل is a sister of كان and takes an accusative predicate, ثابتة. Learning these five with their prepositions covers most of what you will need to say.
يظهر الأب في المقدمة بينما تبقى الابنة في الخلفية خارج البؤرة. المقدمة is the foreground, الخلفية the background, خارج البؤرة out of focus. And for exclusion: تبقى الأم خارج الكادر طوال المشهد, the mother remains outside the frame throughout the scene. خارج الكادر is the phrase that lets you make the framing claim, and it is worth having ready, because absence from a frame is exactly the kind of evidence a plot summary cannot supply.
يترك المشاهد وحده مع الشخصية, the viewer is left alone with the character. ترك is here in the internal passive, and the passive is right because the agent — the director, the editing, the film — is not the point; the effect is. Similarly تقدم الشخصية من الخارج, the character is presented from outside. The passive is both the natural register for this writing and one of the structures the range grid names.
وهو ما يجعل المشاهد يعرف أكثر مما تعرف الشخصية. وهو ما plus a verb is the same resumptive frame the literary topic used, and it does the same job: it turns a description into evidence by stating what the description shows. يعرف أكثر مما تعرف is a comparative with a clause, and it names the audience-knowledge concept precisely. Without this sentence the shot description is just a shot description.
في المشهد الذي يسبق النهاية، تتوقف الكاميرا على وجه الشخصية بعد أن يخرج الآخرون من الكادر، وتظل اللقطة ثابتة وقتا أطول مما يتوقعه المشاهد. وهو ما يترك المتفرج وحده معها ويجعل صمتها مسموعا. Around forty words, present tense throughout, three camera verbs with their prepositions, one accusative predicate after ظل, one comparative with a clause, and a claim attached. That is what a film-essay paragraph is made of.
Result: في المشهد الذي يسبق النهاية، تتوقف الكاميرا على وجه الشخصية بعد أن يخرج الآخرون من الكادر، وتظل اللقطة ثابتة وقتا أطول مما يتوقعه المشاهد. وهو ما يترك المتفرج وحده معها ويجعل صمتها مسموعا

The scene used here is invented purely to demonstrate the difference, since these notes supply no content from any prescribed film; substitute a scene from the film you have studied. Suppose a scene in which a character waits outside a building while others go in, and the camera stays with her.
تنتظر الشخصية خارج المبنى بينما يدخل الآخرون، ثم تخرج معهم بعد قليل. وهذا يبين أنها وحيدة. Every word is about the story, and the analytical sentence at the end — she is lonely — is a claim about the character that could be made from a plot summary. Nothing here shows that the candidate has watched the film rather than read about it, and the AO4 grid will read it as descriptive evidence with limited interpretation.
تبقى الكاميرا مع الشخصية خارج المبنى ولا تتبع الآخرين إلى الداخل. The events are identical and the sentence is now about a decision: the camera could have followed the others and did not. تبقى مع and لا تتبع … إلى are two camera verbs with their prepositions. This one substitution is the whole technique, and it is available for almost any scene.
فلا يرى المشاهد ما يجري في الداخل، ويسمعه فقط من خلال الباب. Exclusion is the evidence: the audience is denied the interior, and denial of information is a technique with a name and an effect. من خلال الباب, through the door, specifies how the sound reaches us, which distinguishes diegetic sound from a score and matters for the claim you are about to make.
وهو ما يجعل معرفة المشاهد مساوية لمعرفتها لا أوسع منها. This is the claim, and note how much more precise it is than she is lonely. It says the film has aligned the audience's knowledge with the character's, which is a technical claim about point of view, supported by two described decisions, and evaluable against other scenes. معرفة المشاهد مساوية لمعرفتها is a nominal sentence with an agreeing active participle.
وهذا عكس ما يحدث في المشهد السابق، حيث تعرض الكاميرا للمشاهد ما لا تراه الشخصية. Setting one scene against another is what makes a claim about method rather than about a moment, and it is the strongest single move available in a film essay. حيث, where, introduces the contrasting scene; ما لا تراه الشخصية is a relative construction with an omitted antecedent.
Ask of each element: am I certain? Certain that the camera stays outside — yes, that is the scene's structure. Certain that sound comes through the door — only if you actually noticed it; if not, cut that clause, because an invented detail is an error and the claim survives without it. Certain that the previous scene did the opposite — only if you checked. Every uncertain detail should be cut rather than hedged, because in a 300-word essay a hedged detail costs the same words as a certain one.
Result: تبقى الكاميرا مع الشخصية خارج المبنى ولا تتبع الآخرين إلى الداخل، فلا يرى المشاهد ما يجري في الداخل ويسمعه فقط من خلال الباب. وهو ما يجعل معرفة المشاهد مساوية لمعرفتها لا أوسع منها، وهذا عكس ما يحدث في المشهد السابق، حيث تعرض الكاميرا للمشاهد ما لا تراه الشخصية

Take a question of the form: ناقش الطريقة التي يقدم بها الفيلم الإطار الاجتماعي لشخصياته. Write the paragraph, using only what would be visible or audible, and keep every claim inside the film.
يقدم الإطار الاجتماعي في هذا الفيلم من خلال ما يظهر في الكادر لا من خلال ما يقال. يقدم is the internal passive, is presented. من خلال … لا من خلال … sets the method claim immediately: the setting is shown rather than stated, which is a claim about technique and therefore analysable. The paragraph has committed itself in one sentence and everything after it is evidence.
فالغرف مكتظة، والأصوات القادمة من الخارج لا تنقطع، ويظهر في كل مشهد داخلي أكثر من جيل واحد. Three observations, all visible or audible, none interpretive. مكتظة is crowded; القادمة من الخارج is an active participle as an adjective, agreeing with the non-human plural أصوات as feminine singular; أكثر من جيل واحد is a comparative phrase. Nothing here requires dialogue and nothing requires memory of the plot.
وهو ما يجعل الخصوصية أمرا يصعب الحصول عليه، لا أمرا مرفوضا. This is the analytical move and note how precise it is: privacy is hard to obtain, which the crowded frames establish, rather than socially disapproved, which they do not. Distinguishing what the evidence supports from a nearby claim it does not support is exactly the discipline this qualification keeps teaching, and it is what stops a setting paragraph from becoming an assertion about a society.
ولا يشرح الفيلم لماذا يعيش هؤلاء جميعا معا، لأنه لا يخاطب مشاهدا يحتاج إلى الشرح. Naming what the film does not explain, and saying why, is the sharpest observation available in this section — it identifies the film's assumed audience, which is a genuine analytical claim about the work and not about the society. يخاطب مشاهدا يحتاج is a relative clause after an indefinite antecedent, with no pronoun.
ومن الأدق أن يقال إن الفيلم يقدم صورة لهذا الإطار لا أن يقال إنه يوثقه. من الأدق أن يقال, it is more accurate to say, is an impersonal with a passive subjunctive. صورة لـ against يوثقه — an image of it against documents it — is the distinction that keeps a film essay honest, and stating it explicitly shows the examiner that you know a film is a constructed object. It costs one sentence and it protects everything else in the paragraph.
Go through the paragraph and ask of each claim where you saw or heard it. Crowded rooms — visible. Continuous outside noise — audible. More than one generation in every interior — visible. Privacy hard to obtain — inferred from the first three, legitimately. Why they live together — explicitly named as unexplained. Nothing has been imported from the thematic topics, which is what makes the paragraph evidence about the film rather than an essay about Arab family structures.

Two versions of a paragraph answering a question about how a film builds pressure. The content is the same in both. Compare them sentence by sentence and see exactly where the AO4 marks appear.
تنتظر الشخصية في الممر. ثم تدخل الغرفة وتجلس. يتحدث الرجل معها قليلا ثم يخرج. تبقى وحدها. وكان هذا مشهدا مؤثرا. Five sentences and every one of them would appear in a plot summary. The final sentence is a reaction, not a judgement. The AO4 grid reads this as description with a point of view asserted rather than justified, which places it in its lower half however accurate the Arabic.
يبني الفيلم الضغط في هذا المشهد من خلال طول اللقطات لا من خلال الحدث. The subject is now يبني الفيلم rather than تنتظر الشخصية, and the claim is about method. من خلال … لا من خلال … states what the pressure is built from and what it is not built from, which is a discrimination and therefore already analysis.
فاللقطة الأولى تظل ثابتة على الممر الفارغ بعد خروج الشخصية منه، وهو ما يجبر المشاهد على الانتظار مع المكان لا مع الشخص. Description of a camera decision, then وهو ما, then the claim. يجبر … على is to force somebody to. الانتظار مع المكان لا مع الشخص is a precise formulation that no plot summary could produce, and it earns its place because it identifies what the shot does to the viewer.
ثم يتأخر القطع إلى داخل الغرفة أكثر مما يتوقع المشاهد، فيصبح الانتظار جزءا من المشهد لا مقدمة له. تأخر القطع, the cut is delayed, is a claim about editing. أكثر مما يتوقع المشاهد is a comparative with a clause. And جزءا من المشهد لا مقدمة له, part of the scene rather than a preface to it, is the analytical formulation — accusative predicates after أصبح, with the alif visible on جزءا.
وقد يرى مشاهد آخر أن البطء هنا ضعف في الإيقاع لا وسيلة للتوتر. Acknowledging that the same evidence supports an opposite reading is the move that lifts an essay into the top band, and it takes one sentence. قد with an imperfect gives possibility. ضعف … لا وسيلة … repeats the لا contrast for the third time in the paragraph, which is deliberate: it is the paragraph's argumentative signature.
غير أن تكرار الأسلوب نفسه في مشهدين آخرين يرجح أنه اختيار مقصود. Answering the objection with evidence rather than with insistence is what makes the concession a strength. تكرار الأسلوب نفسه is the repeated-element argument from the evidence section, doing exactly the work it was learned for: repetition across the film distinguishes a choice from an accident, and that distinction settles the objection.
