Worked example — assessing a claim about globalisation

Assess the claim that "globalisation has made the world both smaller and more unequal." (Operator: assess)

Step 1 — Split the claim into two testable axes
The statement contains two assertions: (a) the world is "smaller" (more connected) and (b) it is "more unequal". An "assess" answer must judge each axis on evidence and then weigh them against each other rather than treating the sentence as a single proposition.
Step 2 — Assess the "smaller" axis
Evidence for connection: container shipping and falling transport costs, the internet and instant communication, global supply chains (visible when they broke during the 2020–2021 pandemic), and cultural flows (English as a lingua franca, streaming, global brands). On this axis the claim is strongly supported.
Step 3 — Assess the "more unequal" axis
Here the evidence is mixed. Between-country inequality has in some measures narrowed as China and India grew (hundreds of millions lifted from extreme poverty since 1990). Within-country inequality has widened in many developed economies (deindustrialisation, the Rust Belt, wage stagnation). The axis is therefore true within nations but more contested between them.
Step 4 — Introduce a qualifier
Distinguish absolute from relative gains, and global from national scales. Globalisation can simultaneously reduce global poverty and increase the visibility and political salience of domestic inequality — which is why anti-globalisation politics rose precisely where average incomes are highest.
Step 5 — Reach a weighed judgement
Conclude that the slogan is half-precise: globalisation has unambiguously made the world "smaller", but "more unequal" holds chiefly within rich societies, while between-country inequality has in aggregate fallen. The tension between these scales is itself the engine of the current political backlash.

Ergebnis: The claim is partly true: globalisation has clearly made the world more connected ("smaller"), but the inequality charge is scale-dependent — it has widened within many developed nations while narrowing between countries as Asia grew, so a precise assessment must separate the global from the national scale.

Migration nach Grossbritannien ist seit 1948 (Empire Windrush) ein konstantes Merkmal britischer Gesellschaft; Quellen waren v. a. Karibik, Südasien (Indien, Pakistan, Bangladesch), Ostafrika.

Windrush scandal (2018): tausende Karibik-Briten, die seit Jahrzehnten legal lebten, wurden fälschlicherweise als illegal eingestuft und verloren Rechte, Arbeit, Sozialleistungen oder medizinische Versorgung; ein kleinerer Teil wurde inhaftiert (Innenministerium nannte 850 fälschlich Inhaftierte 2012 bis 2017), und mindestens 83 Personen wurden nachweislich zu Unrecht abgeschoben.

Worked example — analysing a postcolonial short-story passage

Analyse how a passage from a contemporary diaspora short story (in the manner of Adichie or Lahiri) constructs the experience of cultural in-betweenness. Focus on perspective, code-switching and imagery. (Operator: analyse)

Step 1 — Frame the postcolonial lens
Name the analytical concepts the passage will be read through: hybridity (Bhabha), the "third space" between cultures, double consciousness, and the migrant's split belonging. Stating the lens first disciplines the analysis and signals command of the field's vocabulary.
Step 2 — Read perspective and focalisation
Diaspora narration often uses a close first-person or internally focalised third person that occupies the migrant's consciousness, so that the reader experiences the host culture as estranged. Identify whether the "home" or the "host" culture is presented as the marked, unfamiliar term — the marking reveals the narrator's orientation.
Step 3 — Analyse code-switching as device
Untranslated words from the heritage language (food, kinship terms, greetings) embedded in English prose are not decoration: they perform belonging, withhold full access from the monolingual reader, and dramatise the character's divided linguistic identity. Treat each switch as a meaningful stylistic choice.
Step 4 — Read the imagery of in-betweenness
Look for imagery of thresholds, borders, mirrors, doubled or hyphenated names, and food that fails to taste "right" in the new country. Such imagery encodes the third space materially; connect each image back to the hybridity frame rather than listing it.
Step 5 — Synthesise the cultural argument
Combine perspective, code-switching and imagery to state the passage's claim about identity: that belonging is plural and negotiated rather than singular, and that the narrator inhabits a productive but uneasy hybridity rather than a clean assimilation or a pure origin.

Ergebnis: The passage constructs in-betweenness through an internally focalised migrant perspective, deliberate code-switching that both signals and withholds belonging, and threshold imagery — together dramatising Bhabha's "third space" in which identity is hybrid and negotiated rather than fixed to a single culture.

Standardintercultural-competence

Interkulturelle kommunikative Kompetenz ist einer der fünf KMK-Kompetenzbereiche der fortgeführten Fremdsprache; sie verbindet Sprachhandeln mit kultureller Reflexion.

Drei Teilkompetenzen nach KMK: soziokulturelles Orientierungswissen (Wissen über Zielkulturen), Umgang mit kultureller Differenz (Empathie, Perspektivwechsel), Verstehen und Handeln (mediation).

Critical incidents: kommunikative Situationen, in denen kulturelle Erwartungen sich unbewusst stören (z. B. small talk-Pflicht im UK, direkt-deutsche Kritik in US-amerikanischer Meeting-Kultur).

Stereotype und Pauschalisierungen kritisch reflektieren: Hofstede-Dimensionen (individualism vs. collectivism, power distance) nutzen, ohne sie als Naturgesetz zu lesen.

Single story Gefahr (Adichies TED-Talk 2009): jede Kultur darf nicht auf eine einzige Erzählung reduziert werden.

Perspective-taking als Kernoperation: einen Sachverhalt aus der Sicht einer Figur, einer Sprechergemeinschaft oder einer historischen Position rekonstruieren — explizit gefordert in vielen Klausuraufgaben ("from the perspective of ...").

Beispiele: Brexit aus polnischer Migrant-Sicht, BLM aus weisser US-amerikanischer Mittelklasse-Sicht, Climate Change aus pazifisch-insularer Sicht.

„Global chances and challenges" ist eines der IQB-Themenfelder des Englisch-Aufgabenpools und verbindet den Themenkorridor Globalisierung mit konkreten Weltproblemen — es eignet sich besonders für evaluative Aufgaben (assess, evaluate, discuss).

Climate change: IPCC-Berichte (AR6, 2021–2023), Pariser Abkommen (2015, 1,5-Grad-Ziel), COP-Konferenzen; sprachlich relevant sind Begriffe wie carbon footprint, net zero, climate justice, loss and damage.

Klimagerechtigkeit (climate justice): die Länder mit dem geringsten Emissionsanteil (z. B. pazifische Inselstaaten) tragen die höchsten Folgekosten — ein zentrales Argument für den globalen Süden.
